With the strong demand for computing capacity in industrial applications and the rapid development of the hardware industry in recent years, multiprocessor platforms have been widely used in real-time embedded systems. The quest for performance has led to existing multiprocessor platforms often featuring complex interconnected hardware components and multiple levels of cache. This brings negative interference to the execution of tasks and challenges the predictability of real-time systems. However, existing non-preemptive execution models are an effective solution to eliminate these negative effects. In addition to this, the tasks that modern real-time systems process are becoming increasingly complex. Traditional sequential task models cannot cope with this situation and a stronger expressive model is required. A directed acyclic graph (DAG) that can express the complexity and parallelism of these tasks is a suitable model. In this thesis, we focus on priority-based scheduling algorithms for multiple parallel DAG tasks on non-preemptive multiprocessor platforms, investigating, analysing, and improving existing global and partitioned scheduling algorithms. We propose the concept of stacks to simulate a multi-processor platform and apply release-time tuning techniques based on its simulation of a task set in a hyperperiod. This allows us to impose tighter constraints on the execution of each job released from a task set in a fine-grained manner. We improved the existing priority-based global scheduling algorithm through the release-time tuning technique mentioned above. We also tried to construct a partitioned scheduling algorithm using the simulation results of stacks, i.e. so that all jobs are restricted to run on only one processor, consistent with the simulation results. Currently, organic micropollutants (OMPs) are continuously and uncontrollably released into the water environment worldwide, as the reason for their special properties, OMPs removal has been a global challenge. This study focuses on acetaminophen degradation by photo-electrolysis (PEC) activities, which is one of the promising advanced oxidation processes (AOP) technologies. First, we report the fabrication methods of the BiVO4/BiOI heterojunction on FTO glass, then characterised the prepared photoanodes with XPS, XRD, SEM, EDS, UV-vis and IPCE. The results demonstrated the BiVO4/BiOI p-n heterojunction had been successfully electrodeposited on the FTO glass. Further, the LSV and EIS analysis in this study showed the BiVO4/BiOI photoanode had less photocurrent density than BiVO4 when carried out in the solution of acetaminophen. Even if the heterojunction did not improve the photocurrent, it significantly enhance the acetaminophen removal efficiency in the PEC degradation process. BiVO4/BiOI photoanode achieved 99% degradation efficiency in 3 hours and obtained 0.019 mi n−1 of the reaction rate constant. Building height information has been more used in a variety of industries in recent years. This information can be used in sustainable urban planning, urban climate research, population estimation, and three-dimensional (3D) building reconstruction, etc. Nowadays, building height information is obtained mostly by photogrammetry, high-resolution photos, and aerial Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data. However, the existing technique is constrained by issues of scale, cost, and quality. The Ice, Cloud and land Elevation Satellite-2 (ICESat-2) was launched in 2018, using photoncounting LiDAR technology to gather Earth’s surface elevation data globally. It represents the highest level in space-borne laser altimeters and has been proved can estimate building height. In this thesis, a method is proposed to estimate the height of all buildings in the Netherlands. To estimate the building height, elevation data from ICESat-2 and footprints from Basisregistratie Adressen en Gebouwen (BAG) are two used datasets. Spatial interpolation methods and percentile methods are used to get ground and roof elevation for each footprint, respectively. Random Forest Regression (RFR) method is used to deal with the low coverage of ICESat-2. The result shows that less 3% of buildings could obtain their height from ICESat-2 data. Among these buildings, 90% of them are lower than 10 meters and half of them are between 5 - 10 meters. This caused a low performance of the prediction model with Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 2.1m. The building between 5 - 10 meters has the smallest MAE of 1.1267m. Small amount of available of ICESat-2 data is the key reason, which leads to the training data of building over 10 meters is not enough. The results reveal it is impossible to get the height of all buildings in the Netherlands with ICESat-2 data. In the recent decade, a wide range of emerging contaminants (ECs) has been regularly detected in the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) effluent, surface water and even groundwater. Among all these ECs, organic micropollutants (OMPs) are receiving increasing attention due to their characteristics of low concentration, difficulty in degradation and their harmful effects on humans and the environment. Nineteen OMPs have been included on the contaminant watch list of the European Union Water Framework Directive since 2015 and efficient and reliable methods to eliminate them are researched worldwide. Therefore, in this study, five of these 19 OMPs (benzotriazole (BTA), carbamazepine (CBZ), diclofenac (DIC), ketoprofen (KET) and caffeine (CAF)) were selected as target OMPs. And the research objective is to fabricate a ternary composite photoanode and to investigate its photoelectrocatalytic degradation performance for all five target OMPs. BiVO4/(TiO2/graphene oxide (GO))mix ternary composite thin films were successfully deposited on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates using ultrasonic spray paralysis (USP) method to form a ternary heterojunction structure and to improve the photoelectrocatalytic performance for degradation of the five target OMPs. The morphology, crystal phase, surface chemical composition, optical and electrochemical properties of this ternary composite photoanode were analyzed by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-vis spectroscopy, incident photon-to-electron conversion efficiency (IPCE), linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), respectively. Personalized designs bring added value to the products and the users. Meanwhile, they also pose challenges to the product design process as each product differs. In this paper, with the focus on personalized fit, we present an overview as well as details of the personalized design process based on design practice. The general workflow of personalized product design is introduced first. Then different steps in the workflow such as human data/parameters acquisition, computational design, design for digital fabrication, and product evaluation are presented. Tools and methods that are often used in different steps in the process are also outlined where in human data acquisition, 3D scanning, and digital human models are addressed. For computational design, the use of computational thinking tools such as abstraction, decomposition, pattern recognition and algorithms are discussed. In design for digital fabrication, additive manufacturing methods (e.g. FDM), and their requirements on the design are highlighted. For product evaluation, both functional evaluation and usability evaluation are considered and the evaluation results can be the starting point of the next design iteration. Finally, several case studies are presented for a better understanding of the workflow, the importance of different steps in the workflow and the deviations in the approach regarding different contexts. In recent years, frequent large-scale power grid accidents have caused serious economic losses and bad social impact, which has drawn great attention from power grid enterprises. As one of the key elements of production, safety investment plays an important role in improving the safety level and reducing accident loss. In this paper, System dynamics (SD) and Bayesian network (BN) are integrated to develop a novel safety investment optimization model for power grid enterprises, which takes into account the impact of safety investment factors on accidents and the interactions between them. Based on sensitivity analysis, critical safety investment factors are determined to form the subsystem of the SD model. Subsequently, the optimal safety investment strategy is determined by a three-step simulation. The simulation results show that there are barrel effects and a diminishing marginal utility in safety investment. 5G promises to shift Industry 4.0 to the next level by allowing flexible production. However, many communication standards are used throughout a production site, which will stay so in the foreseeable future. Furthermore, localization of assets will be equally valuable in order to get to a higher level of automation. This paper proposes a reference architecture for a convergent localization and communication network for smart manufacturing that combines 5G with other existing technologies and focuses on high-mix, low-volume applications, particularly at small and medium-sized enterprises. Combining the first principles calculations and the non-equilibrium Green’s function formalisms, we decipher the structural, electronic, and transport properties of boron phosphide (BP) with hydrogenation. Hydrogenated BP monolayer is an indirect semiconductor with a wide-bandgap of 3.76 eV that is favorable in power devices. We find that the electronic properties are dependent of the stacking orders and the binding strength of the AA-, AB-, and AE-stacked patterns are strongest in the investigated configurations. Under the external E-field, the bandgaps of hydrogenated BP bilayer show a quasi-parabolic function and a feature of the semiconductor-metallic transition. Besides, when we apply a tensile strain on hydrogenated BP bilayer, its bandgap linearly decreases with the increasing of the strain strength along the zigzag and armchair directions. The strain energies further confirm that hydrogenated BP has an excellent characteristic of elastic deformation, being independent of the stacking orders and strain orientation. The transport calculations exhibit various responses to the different two-probe configurations, which indicates that hydrogenated BP possesses the feature of transmission anisotropy. The sustainable development of groundwater resources in arid and semi-arid regions is a challenging task hindered by climate change and human activities. The rational utilization and management of groundwater resources is, therefore, dependent on an understanding of the influences of human and climatic factors on the spatial distribution of groundwater resources and their change over time. The thick Quaternary aquifers in the Yinchuan Basin, China were used herein as an example of how to quantitatively assess spatial and temporal trends in groundwater resources in response to human activities and climate change. A 3D transient groundwater flow model was constructed and used to simulate the evolution and spatial variability of hydrogeological processes from 1990 to 2020. By subsequently applying regime shift detection and correlation analysis to the simulation results, we found that: 1) groundwater storage was continuously depleted over the 30-year period, reaching a cumulative depletion of 1.89×109 m3; 2) human activities were mainly responsible for variations in regional hydrogeological processes for a period of up to 30 years. Climate only affected short-term interannual fluctuations in groundwater storage; 3) human activities (e.g., river water diversion and groundwater abstractions) were the decisive factors causing a continuous reduction of groundwater resources. This paper proposes a solution to the circuit topology of heavy-duty electric vehicle (HDEV) chargers. In light of the original hybrid rectifier, a new unidirectional Input-Parallel-Output-Series (IPOS) three-phase hybrid rectifier is proposed and analyzed. The IPOS topology is advantageous at ultra-high power rating to interface the next-generation HDEV batteries which require a high and wide output voltage range of 800~1500 V with available 600/1200V commercial semiconductors. Moreover, the proposed topology is efficient, cost-effective, and scalable with the grid input current harmonic components in compliance with the IEEE-519 standard. An efficient, compact and lightweight three-phase AC-DC power factor correction (PFC) converter becomes a necessity for electric vehicles (EVs) On-board chargers (OBCs) in conventional grid-to-vehicle (G2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) charging methods. The commercially available OBCs have very limited power density despite the moderate efficiency under specific power levels. In this paper, the integrated triangular current mode (iTCM) control is implemented to improve the power density (kW/L) and specific power (kW/kg) of the three-phase PFC converter stage while maintaining high efficiency. Zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on is realized in the iTCM control with a higher switching frequency to reduce the LCL filter size without sacrificing efficiency. By adding an LC branch between the bridge leg and mid-point of the DC link, the high-frequency and low-frequency currents are split to minimize the inductor loss and to derive a better inductor design. Analytical modeling and simulation in PLECS are conducted to verify the idea of iTCM. The capacitor-current feedback active damping method is implemented to prevent instability from the LC and LCL filters. The design of an 11kW three-phase AC-DC PFC converter, including the input LCL filter, achieves an efficiency of 98.81%, a power density of 12.46 kW/L and a specific power per weight of 1.87 kW/kg. This paper presents the study of a 100kW electric vehicle (EV) fast charger based on a 12-pulse rectifier cascaded with two buck-type DC-DC converters. The proposed circuit operates with a triangular current shaping method which considerably improves the current harmonics performance of the system. The studied circuit is particularly suited for high power battery charging, being relatively simple to operate, requiring a low active semiconductor count (only two active switches), and because it employs circuit technologies well-established in the high power market. Above all, this EV fast charger meets the requirements of isolation, high efficiency, high output voltage and good power quality (low THD and unity power factor). This paper describes in detail the analytical modeling of the studied circuit, including the current harmonic input filter design which meets the grid standard requirement, and the loss modeling of the semiconductors and passive elements. Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a potentially powerful privacy-preserving machine learning method-ology, since it avoids exchanging data between participants, but instead exchanges model parameters. FL has traditionally been applied to image, voice and similar data, but recently it has started to draw attention from domains including financial services where the data is predominantly tabular. However, the work on tabular data has not yet considered potential attacks, in particular attacks using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which have been successfully applied to FL for non-tabular data. This paper is the first to explore leakage of private data in Federated Learning systems that process tabular data. We design a Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs)-based attack model which can be deployed on a malicious client to reconstruct data and its properties from other participants. As a side-effect of considering tabular data, we are able to statistically assess the efficacy of the attack (without relying on human observation such as done for FL for images). We implement our attack model in a recently developed generic FL software framework for tabular data processing. Natural gas compartment accommodated in utility tunnels is beneficial in meeting the pressing demand of energy supply and sustainable urban environment. However, the leaking gas characterized by flammable and explosive can pose a huge threat to the safe operation of the utility tunnel. When an unexpected gas leakage accident happens in the actual situation, the prior information associated with the leakage source is commonly unclear or unknown. Therefore, the absence of an available tool for reasonable leakage and dispersion prediction in the above scenario precludes the timely and appropriate emergency response treatment. In this study, a three-dimensional source term estimation (3D-STE) model with the combination of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) algorithm is proposed to achieve spatiotemporal gas concentration prediction and gas emission source estimation. In the proposed approach, the observation data can be incorporated into the gas dispersion simulations continuously, thus the simulation results can be revised by the observation data and the source term estimation of gas leakage can be achieved by employing the EnKF algorithm. A twin experiment is employed to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed model. The results show that the proposed model can revise the prior errors in the gas leakage rate significantly and obtain an accurate prediction of gas concentration distribution as well as gas leakage rate. A feasible framework is also proposed serving as a good paradigm for the 3D-STE model application. Dam breaches often have catastrophic consequences in downstream areas. Hydrodynamic factors and the evacuation potential of the population at risk (PAR) have significant impacts on the loss of life (LOL) caused by dam breaches. However, the existing comprehensive evaluation models have not conducted in-depth research on the evacuation potential of populations. Thus, limited guidance is available for relevant departments to formulate emergency plans to reduce the potential LOL. Therefore, a new comprehensive evaluation model was proposed in this study. According to the relevant references and disaster theory, the main influencing factors and the process through which the LOL is caused by dam breaches were determined. The specific occurrence process was divided into six stages: a dam breach causes flood, the flood puts the PAR, the PAR complete the preparation work, the PAR evacuate, the un-evacuated population shelter themselves inside buildings, and flood causes the death of the exposed population. To calculate the LOL, the parameters relevant at each stage were defined. Furthermore, the Hydrologic Engineering Center's River Analysis System, Geographic Information System, and related materials were used to simulate the flood routing and evacuation potential of the PAR, quantifying the parameters in the model. The model was applied to 14 towns in the downstream areas of the Luhun Reservoir in Henan Province, China, and its accuracy was verified by comparing the results obtained from the two existing models. A reliable multi-agent decision-making system is highly demanded for safe and efficient operations of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). In order to represent the mutual effects between vehicles and model the dynamic traffic environments, this research proposes an integrated and open-source framework to realize different Graph Reinforcement Learning (GRL) methods for better decision-making in interactive driving scenarios. Firstly, an interactive driving scenario on the highway with two ramps is constructed. The vehicles in this scenario are modeled by graph representation, and features are extracted via Graph Neural Network (GNN). Secondly, several GRL approaches are implemented and compared in detail. Finally, The simulation in the SUMO platform is carried out to evaluate the performance of different G RL approaches. Results are analyzed from multiple perspectives to compare the performance of different G RL methods in intelligent transportation scenarios. Experiments show that the implementation of GNN can well model the interactions between vehicles, and the proposed framework can improve the overall performance of multi-agent decision-making. STT-MRAM has long been a promising non-volatile memory solution for the embedded application space owing to its attractive characteristics such as non-volatility, low leakage, high endurance, and scalability. However, the operating requirements for high-performance computing (HPC) and low power (LP) applications involve different challenges. This paper addresses different aspects of STT-MRAM; it will cover state-of-the-art, some new results and future challenges related to technology, design and test. While STT-MRAM devices have shown encouraging performance metrics at device-level, a key challenge has been achieving backend-of-line (BEOL) CMOS compatibility, while retaining the benefits of low power operation. Scaling demands to improve data densities have placed additional challenges in terms of addressing the impact of process-induced damage on device performance at CD < 100 nm. In this paper, we consider optimal pairs trading strategies in terms of static optimality and dynamic optimality under mean–variance criterion. The spread of the entity pairs is assumed to be mean-reverting and follows an Ornstein–Uhlenbeck process. A constrained optimal control problem is considered, and the Lagrange multiplier technique is adopted to transform the primal problem into a family of linear-quadratic optimal control problems that can be solved by the classical dynamic programming principle. Both solutions for static and dynamic optimal pairs trading problems are derived and discussed. We show that the “static and dynamic optimality” is a viable approach to the time-inconsistent control problem. Short-term traffic flow prediction is a core branch of intelligent traffic systems (ITS) and plays an important role in traffic management. The graph convolution network (GCN) is widely used in traffic prediction models to efficiently handle the graphical structural data of road networks. However, the influence weights among different road sections are usually distinct in real life and are difficult to analyze manually. The traditional GCN mechanism, which relies on a manually set adjacency matrix, is unable to dynamically learn such spatial patterns during training. To address this drawback, this study proposes a novel location graph convolutional network (location-GCN). The location-GCN solves this problem by adding a new learnable matrix to the GCN mechanism, using the absolute value of this matrix to represent the distinct influence levels among different nodes. Subsequently, long short-term memory (LSTM) is employed in the proposed traffic prediction model. Moreover, trigonometric function encoding was used in this study to enable the short-term input sequence to convey long-term periodic information. Finally, the proposed model was compared with the baseline models and evaluated on two real-world traffic flow datasets. Bisphenols are important industrial materials for example for the production of plastics, but are also well known for their adverse health effects, in particular bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine disruptor. The widespread use of plastics has raised concerns. Therefore, the removal of bisphenols from wastewater has sparked the interest of the scientific community. This work introduces a novel hybrid technique of micro-nano bubbles assisted laccase (MNB-Lac) to degrade bisphenols in water. The feasibility of MNB-Lac using BPA as a model contaminant was evaluated by comparing with MNB, Lac, ultrasound (UL), UL-Lac, and UL-MNB-Lac. Comprehensive investigations were carried out to understand the specific influences of key process parameters including the initial pollutant concentration, temperature, air intake, pH, outlet pipe length, and Lac concentration on BPA degradation. The alkaline environment and extended length of outlet pipe could improve the degradation efficiency further. MNB-Lac exhibited 2.3–6.2 folds higher BPA degradation and less time than the other above process under the optimal parameters. The mechanism of MNB-Lac revealed that the generation of hydroxyl radical, high O2 solubility, and high mass transfer efficiency induced by MNB play important roles on enhancing the degradation catalyzed by Lac. MNB-Lac was successfully used for treating bisphenol B, bisphenol C, and the mixture of three bisphenols with high removal efficiency. Subsequently, these degradation products were analyzed by GC–MS. Flash Flood Guidance (FFG) is a rainfall threshold which initiates flooding in streams. It merely provides a binary output (yes or no) which has large uncertainties in forecasting. In this paper, we propose a new method by combining FFG with the Frequentist method to present the probability of flash flood occurrence based on historical rainfall events. We first calculated deviation from the log transform rainfall data leading to flash floods. Kernel Density Estimation (KDE) was used to describe the deviation. Normal Distribution Function (NDF) was chosen to fit the KDE output and to calculate probabilities of flooding as per the Frequentist FFG. In order to aid decision making, three probability thresholds (10, 20 and 60%) were used for defining four flood risk classes, namely very low, low, significant and high, and were colour coded respectively as green, yellow, orange and red. The proposed Frequentist FFG method was then applied to the Posina River basin in Italy. Comparison of forecasts from the conventional FFG (with probability 0 or 1) and Frequentist FFG for 94 6-hourly rainfall events, including 23 flood events, shows that the Frequentist FFG presented a probability of flooding varying from 0 to 100% and the corresponding risk class can be used to reduce false alarms while still reducing the disaster risk. Achieving operational stability at high current densities remains a challenge in CO2 electrolyzers due to flooding of the gas diffusion layer (GDL) that supports the electrocatalyst. We mitigated electrode flooding at high current densities using a vacuum-assisted infiltration method to embed 200-400 nm-sized polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) particles at the interface of the microporous layer (MPL) and carbon cloth in a commercial GDL. In CO2 electrolysis to CO over a silver nanoparticle catalyst on the GDL, the PTFE-embedded GDL not only just exhibited less than 10% of the electrolyte seepage rates observed in untreated GDLs at a current density of 300 mA·cm-2 but also expanded the electrochemical active area across the testing conditions. Carsharing has become a popular travel mode owing to its convenience of use, easy parking, and low cost of using a car by those who only need it occasionally. However, because of the inadequate location of carsharing stations (station-based systems) or vehicles (free-floating systems), effectively requiring expensive and complex relocation strategies, a number of customers are lost, and some carsharing companies are facing bankruptcy. This study proposes a data-driven, dynamic, multi-company relocation method, which aims to reduce relocation costs and increase profit in one-way carsharing station-based systems through cooperative strategies. The method starts from the prediction of carsharing inflows and outflows at each station throughout the day using a new deep learning algorithm designated as “the attention-enhanced temporal graph convolutional network”. It adopts an encoder-decoder structure to simultaneously capture the temporal and spatial carsharing usage patterns. A two-phase integer programming model is proposed to optimize the process of vehicle relocation and staff rebalancing with cooperative relocation strategies: the sharing of relocation staff, the sharing of vehicles and stations among the different companies. An adaptive large neighborhood search based heuristic approach is implemented to solve the two-phase model. Based on the 6-month travel records from four carsharing companies operating simultaneously in Fuzhou, China, the proposed model and cooperative strategies are assessed. The results show that the total profit of the four carsharing companies can be increased by 25.49% with the cooperation of staff and vehicles. We report a new strategy to improve the reactivity and durability of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA)-type electrolyzer for CO2 electrolysis to CO by modifying the silver catalyst layer with urea. Our experimental and theoretical results show that mixing urea with the silver catalyst can promote electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2R), relieve limitations of alkali cation transport from the anolyte, and mitigate salt precipitation in the gas diffusion electrode in long-term stability tests. In a 10 mM KHCO3 anolyte, the urea-modified Ag catalyst achieved CO selectivity 1.3 times better with energy efficiency 2.8-fold better than an untreated Ag catalyst, and operated stably at 100 mA cm-2 with a faradaic efficiency for CO above 85% for 200 h. Conventional asphalt mixture has poor microwave absorbing performance and microwave heating efficiency. Based on the characteristics of dielectric loss of scrap tire pyrolysis carbon black (PCB), it is proposed to improve the microwave absorbing performance and self-healing rate of bitumen. The phase composition and electromagnetic parameters of PCB were tested to reveal its microwave heating mechanism. The preparation parameters, heating characteristics and self-healing properties of PCB modified bitumen were studied through the dispersion uniformity test, microwave heating test and SCB test. The main phases of PCB are microwave absorbing carbon and silicon, indicating that PCB is a good electric loss microwave absorbing material. 40 min is the recommended mixing time of 15% PCB modified bitumen. PCB's dosage, microwave frequency and microwave heating time have significant effects on the microwave heating characteristics of PCB modified bitumen. The extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from activated sludge played significant roles in the removal of nanoparticles from wastewater. A series of batch experiments were carried out to determine the adsorption mechanism of three nano-Ag by activated sludge, as well as the contributions of EPS fractions including dissolved EPS (DEPS), loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS). The results demonstrated that the adsorption of nano-Ag by sludge biomass agreed with pseudo-second-order kinetic reaction model and Freundlich isotherm model. About 26.0-41.2% of nano-Ag was trapped by the bound EPS (BEPS) matrix of activated sludge (especially LB-EPS) and 42.5-52.6% of them was adsorbed onto the inner cells after the adsorption. Moreover, the interaction energy contributions of EPS fractions followed the order of EDE > 0 > ETB > ELB, suggesting DEPS in wastewater went against the removal of nano-Ag due to steric repulsion while LB-EPS and TB-EPS were positive to nano-Ag adsorption by modifying biomass surface and providing extensive binding sites. Besides, EPS fractions played significant roles in the adsorption of nano-Ag with low initial concentrations but had limited effect at high concentrations. X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) plays an important role for elemental analysis in a wide range of scientific fields, especially in cultural heritage. XRF imaging, which uses a raster scan to acquire spectra pixel-wise across artworks, provides the opportunity for spatial analysis of pigment distributions based on their elemental composition. However, conventional XRF-based pigment identification relies on time-consuming elemental mapping facilitated by the interpretation of measured spectra by experts. To reduce the reliance on manual work, recent studies have applied machine learning techniques to cluster similar XRF spectra in data analysis and to identify the most likely pigments. Nevertheless, it is still challenging to implement automatic pigment identification strategies to directly tackle the complex structure of real paintings, e.g. pigment mixtures and layered pigments. In addition, pigment identification based on XRF on a pixel-by-pixel basis remains an obstacle due to the high noise level. Therefore, we developed a deep-learning based pigment identification framework to fully automate the process. In particular, this method offers high sensitivity to the underlying pigments and to the pigments present in low concentrations, therefore enabling robust mapping of pigments based on single-pixel XRF spectra. As case studies, we applied our framework to lab-prepared mock-up paintings and two 19th-century paintings: Paul Gauguin's Poèmes Barbares (1896) that contains layered pigments with an underlying painting, and Paul Cezanne's The Bathers (1899-1904). This letter investigates the direct trajectory optimization of the free-floating space manipulator (FFSM). The main purpose is to plan the joint space trajectories to reduce the spacecraft motion due to the joint rotation during the FFSM performing tasks. To improve the calculation efficiency, the adaptive Radau pseudospectral method (A-RPM) is applied to discretize the system dynamics and transform the formulated optimal problem into a nonlinear programming problem (NLP). By adaptively subdividing the current segment and assigning collocation points according to the solution error, high-degree interpolation polynomials are avoided. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, a ground micro-gravity platform of the FFSM system is designed by using the air-bearing technique, on which experiments are carried out. As a product of phosphorous recovery from anaerobic digestion (AD) of waste activated sludge (WAS), vivianite has received increasing attention. However, key factors controlling vivianite formation have not yet been fully addressed. Thus, this study was initiated to ascertain key factors controlling vivianite formation. A simulation of chemical equilibriums indicates that interfering ions such as metallic ions and inorganic compounds may affect vivianite formation, especially at a PO43-concentration lower than 3 mM. The experiments demonstrated that the rate of ferric bio-reduction conducted by dissimilatory metal-reducing bacteria (DMRB) and the competition of methane-producing bacteria (MPB) with DMRB for VFAs (acetate) were not the key factors controlling vivianite formation, and that ferric bio-reduction of DMRB can proceed when a sufficient amount of Fe3+ exists in WAS. The determined affinity constants (Ks) of both DMRB and MPB on acetate revealed that the KHAc constant (4.2 mmol/g VSS) of DMRB was almost 4 times lower than that of MPB (15.67 mmol/g VSS) and thus MPB could not seriously compete for VFAs (acetate) with DMRB. As a result, vivianite formation was controlled mainly by the amount of Fe3+ in WAS. In practice, a Fe/P molar ratio of 2:1 should be enough for vivianite formation in AD of WAS. Alginate like extracellular polymers (ALE) recovered from flocculent sludge has been identified as a kind of highly valuable biomaterials. However, the extraction protocols limit the production of biopolymers as ALE extracted from flocculent sludge is at a lower level, around 90–190 mg/g VSS. Under this circumstance, the eco-friendly and effective optimizations for the ALE extraction protocols are expected, and thus surfactants have gained an attention to enhancing the ALE extraction. With this study, different surfactants with different structures and chemical characteristics, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and octyl phenyl polyoxyethylene ether (Triton X-100), were experimented to improve the ALE extraction, and in turn the optimal conditions and the associated mechanisms were evaluated and figured out. The experimental results indicated that surfactants could enhance the ALE extraction but also improve the alginate purification of ALE. With the optimal dosage of surfactants, the ALE extraction increased from 124.1 mg/g VSS to about 222.8–281.9 mg/g VSS, and the alginate purify was at around 54%–70%, in which the efficiency of the ALE extraction was improved by 79.5%–127.2%. Among others, Triton X-100 had the best performance on improving the ALE extraction, followed by CTAB and SDS. The mechanisms of surfactants on enhancing the ALE extraction and improving the alginate purify can be attributed to: i) surfactants micelles, which can solubilize flocs and extracellular biopolymers; ii) similar structures of surfactants and ALE, which follows the rule of “like dissolves like”; iii) functional groups adsorption, which facilitates the ALE release from matrixes. Autonomous docking and undocking control is an important part of intelligent ship motion control. In this study, the adaptive-mutation beetle swarm prediction (AMBS-P) algorithm is used to propose a control approach for autonomous docking and undocking. Firstly, this paper introduces the principle of the AMBS-P algorithm, then the convergence is proved. Secondly, the “Tito-Neri” model ship is introduced as a case study, and the thrust allocation process is described. Finally, the effect of docking and undocking is verified in multiple scenarios starting from different angles. In the verification, first of all, when designing the docking and undocking controllers, the correctness of the algorithm and the practicality of the control are verified by whether there is ship drag or not. Secondly, by analyzing the parameters of the algorithm, the optimal parameters of it are determined and verified in the real environment. Thirdly, compared with typical proportion–integral–derivative (PID) algorithm and nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) algorithm, the AMBS-P algorithm has better results for autonomous docking and undocking control, no matter in long-distance or short-distance. Satellite observation scheduling plays a significant role in improving the efficiency of Earth observation systems. To solve the large-scale multisatellite observation scheduling problem, this article proposes an ensemble of metaheuristic and exact algorithms based on a divide-And-conquer framework (EHE-DCF), including a task allocation phase and a task scheduling phase. In the task allocation phase, each task is allocated to a proper orbit based on a metaheuristic incorporated with a probabilistic selection and a tabu mechanism derived from ant colony optimization and tabu search, respectively. In the task scheduling phase, we construct a task scheduling model for every single orbit and solve the model by using an exact method (i.e., branch and bound, B&B). The task allocation and task scheduling phases are performed iteratively to obtain a promising solution. To validate the performance of the EHE-DCF, we compare it with B&B, three divide-And-conquer-based metaheuristics, and a state-of-The-Art metaheuristic. Experimental results show that the EHE-DCF can obtain higher scheduling profits and complete more tasks compared with existing algorithms. Alginate like extracellular polymers (ALE) recovered from excess sludge have been evaluated as an eco-friendly, cost effective and sustainable alternative to highly valued materials. However, the ALE extraction from flocculent sludge ranges normally from 90 to 190 mg/g VSS, which is only equivalent to the lowest edge of the ALE production from aerobic granular sludge (AGS). But flocculent sludge is much higher in production than AGS and thus a further investigation was expected on key factors and associated mechanisms controlling ALE formation of flocculent sludge. The investigation was conducted by lab-scale sequencing batch bioreactors. The experiments revealed that flocculent sludge with starch used as an influent substrate contained the highest ALE production (220.3 ± 8.0 mg/g VSS). Low temperature was favorable to enriching ALE, up to 303.3 ± 21.5 mg/g VSS at 12 °C. Moreover, ALE reached up to 137.8 ± 13.2 mg/g VSS at C:N = 5:1 and slightly declined with increased or decreased the C/N ratio. The specific ALE yield was 63.7 mg ALE/(g BOD5) at a low organic load, which was twice as high as that with high organic loads. However, SRT had a minor effect on ALE formation. Obviously, such scenarios as starch-rich and low temperature could promote the ALE production. Furthermore, the characteristic analysis including alginate equivalent, different fractions and hydrogel forming property among different ALE, confirmed that the ALE extracted from flocculent sludge had a potential in substituting for commercial alginates. Reliable characterization of the pore structure is essentially important for transport-related durability studies of cementitious materials. Mercury intrusion porosimetry has been commonly used for pore structure measurement while the ink-bottle effect significantly affects the trustworthiness of pore size features of cementitious materials. Pressurization-depressurization cycling mercury intrusion porosimetry (PDC-MIP) is an alternative approach previously reported with the purpose to provide better estimates of pore size results. It is found however that the PDC-MIP greatly overestimates the ink-bottle pore volume owing to the incomplete extrusion of mercury in throat pores after the pressurization-depressurization cycle. Intrusion-extrusion cyclic mercury porosimetry (IEC-MIP), as a further improvement, is then described, which can reliably capture the ink-bottle effect and obtain a clear picture of the distribution of the ink-bottle pores in cementitious materials. The ink-bottle effect of cement pastes is observed being pore size-dependent and the role of critical pores is emphasized. Water-cement ratio primarily changes the effective porosity while plays a minor role in the ink-bottle porosity. The addition of reactive blends substantially enhances the ink-bottle effect during mercury penetration into small pores. Vegetation is important for urban heat mitigation. The cooling intensity of vegetation is affected by background climate and urban design. How to evaluate vegetation cooling efficiency under different climate conditions is still an issue open to discussion. In this study, a normalized indicator of urban vegetation cooling efficiency (NVCE) is proposed as a metric of urban vegetation cooling efficiency applicable and comparable under different climate and urban conditions. When surfaces are only covered by vegetation, the cooling effects should be highest than other pixels at the local climate scale. The difference of surface temperature between the pure vegetation surfaces and surfaces without vegetations (Tr, b − Tr, v) is the range of the vegetation cooling intensity at the same local climate conditions. Difference between radiometric surface temperature of a mixed pixel and the vegetation temperature within the mixed pixel (Ti, r − Ti, v) is excess temperature of pixel i. The ratio of (Ti, r − Ti, v) to (Tr, b − Tr, v) can indicate how much percent of existed excess temperature after vegetation cooling effects for pixel i under such local climate condition. Thus, the NVCE is defined as (Ti, r − Ti, v)/(Tr, b − Tr, v). Based on the high spatial resolution data, the Ti, v and Ti, rwithin each 30 m × 30 m grid are derived to calculate the NVCE and the relationships between NVCE and fractional vegetation cover were studied under different conditions. Results showed that NVCE can reduce the differences caused by background climate in the assessment of vegetation cooling efficiency, i.e. making vegetation cooling efficiency under different climate conditions comparable. The NVCE is also sensitive to the vegetation fraction. Successful spoken-word recognition relies on interplay between lexical and sublexical processing. Previous research demonstrated that listeners readily shift between more lexically-biased and more sublexically-biased modes of processing in response to the situational context in which language comprehension takes place. Recognizing words in the presence of background noise reduces the perceptual evidence for the speech signal and – compared to the clear – results in greater uncertainty. It has been proposed that, when dealing with greater uncertainty, listeners rely more strongly on sublexical processing. The present study tested this proposal using behavioral and electroencephalography (EEG) measures. We reasoned that such an adjustment would be reflected in changes in the effects of variables predicting recognition performance with loci at lexical and sublexical levels, respectively. We presented native speakers of Dutch with words featuring substantial variability in (1) word frequency (locus at lexical level), (2) phonological neighborhood density (loci at lexical and sublexical levels) and (3) phonotactic probability (locus at sublexical level). Each participant heard each word in noise (presented at one of three signal-to-noise ratios) and in the clear and performed a two-stage lexical decision and transcription task while EEG was recorded. Using linear mixed-effects analyses, we observed behavioral evidence that listeners relied more strongly on sublexical processing when speech quality decreased. Mixed-effects modelling of the EEG signal in the clear condition showed that sublexical effects were reflected in early modulations of ERP components (e.g., within the first 300 msec post word onset). In noise, EEG effects occurred later and involved multiple regions activated in parallel. The popularity of perpendicular magnetic tunnel junction (pMTJ)-based spin-transfer torque magnetic random access memories (STT-MRAMs) is growing very fast. The performance of such memories is very sensitive to magnetic fields, including both internal and external ones. This article presents a magnetic-field-aware compact model of pMTJ, named the MFA-magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) model, for magnetic/electrical co-simulation of MTJ/CMOS circuits. Magnetic measurement data of MTJ devices, with diameters ranging from 35 to 175 nm, are used to calibrate an in-house magnetic coupling model. This model is subsequently integrated into our developed compact pMTJ model, which is implemented in Verilog-A. The superiority of the proposed MFA-MTJ model for device/circuit co-design of STT-MRAM is demonstrated by simulating a single pMTJ as well as STT-MRAM full circuits. Very few developed economies have a full free trade agreement (FTA) with China. This study employs one GTAP model and builds an extended environmental multi-region input–output model to investigate a hypothetical China-UK FTA, concerning embodied industrial emissions of SO2, PM2.5, NOX, and NH3. The economic sectors are also classified based on their embodied pollution intensity and trade advantage index under various FTA scenarios. Results show that the UK’s GDP and welfare and China’s welfare will increase, along with changes in their trade structures. Overall, this FTA brings about larger net impacts on embodied emissions of SO2 than on PM2.5, NOX and NH3, and both countries are net importers of the latter three pollutants. Key sectors such as non-metallic mineral products, chemical products, and agriculture are inclined to become less competitive and less polluting under the FTA. The inclusion of agri-food sectors exhibits slight counteracting effects in general. As a key heat-dissipating and electrical interconnecting component in high-temperature power modules, die-attach and substrate-attach layers play an important role in effectively reducing the thermal resistance and improving the long-term reliability. Traditional substrate-attach materials limit the high-temperature applications of packaging modules due to their high thermal resistance and high-temperature reliability. To solve the above deficiency, a copper foam-silver composite was proposed in this paper, which was prepared by mixing copper foam solid skeleton with micron silver paste. According to the results of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) of silver paste, the preheating process was determined and sintered at 270°C and 10MPa. The influence of different preparation technology on the quality of sintered joint was investigated. The morphology characteristics and distribution of sintered silver in the copper foam were observed by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show that the sintered silver of group C samples can be uniformly filled into the solid skeleton of copper foam, and the densification degree is high, without cracks, delamination, and holes. For the complex multi-ship encounter scenarios, this article proposes a dynamic collision avoidance path planning algorithm based on the A-star algorithm and ship navigation rules, namely Dynamic Anti-collision A-star (DAA-star) algorithm. A dynamic search mechanism of the DAA-star algorithm considering time factors is designed to enable the collision avoidance for situations with known moving obstacles. A quaternion ship domain is generated based on Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, and the navigation risk cost is calculated with the combination of the quaternion ship domain and potential field. The searching constraints conforming with the Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea (COLREGS) rules are set for the DAA-star algorithm to guarantee the safety of collision avoidance. Meanwhile, the individual ship maneuverability constraints and maneuverability differences from ship to ship are both considered in the proposed DAA-star algorithm, which can solve the path planning problem with dynamic obstacles in multi-ship encounter scenarios. Dynamic searchable symmetric encryption (DSSE) has been widely recognized as a promising technique to delegate update and search queries over an outsourced database to an untrusted server while guaranteeing the privacy of data. Many efforts on DSSE have been devoted to obtaining a good tradeoff between security and performance. However, it appears that all existing DSSE works miss studying on what will happen if the DSSE client issues irrational update queries carelessly, such as duplicate update queries and delete queries to remove non-existent entries (that have been considered by many popular database system in the setting of plaintext). In this scenario, we find that (1) most prior works lose their claimed correctness or security, and (2) no single approach can achieve correctness, forward and backward security, and practical performance at the same time. To address this problem, we study for the first time the notion of robustness of DSSE. Generally, we say that a DSSE scheme is robust if it can keep the same correctness and security even in the case of misoperations. Then, we introduce a new cryptographic primitive named key-updatable pseudo-random function and apply this primitive to constructing ROSE, a robust DSSE scheme with forward and backward security. Continuum robots such as robotic catheters are increasingly being used in minimally invasive surgery. Compliance contributes to enhanced safety during e.g. catheter insertion, however, estimation of contact force and location may help clinicians avoiding exerting excessive force. Ultimately this could lead to faster and safer interventions. Researchers proposed force sensors integrated in the catheter tip in the past. However, such sensors add extra complexity to the catheter design. Also, tip force sensors do not provide insights on forces that act along the catheter length. This paper proposes a data-driven approach for localizing contact forces that appear over the length of the catheter. The proposed approach consists of a collision detection method and a contact localization method. The framework only requires the measurement of the catheter's shape which can be done by an embedded multi-core Fiber Bragg Grating fiber. The method was validated experimentally with a 3D-printed continuum robot with an integrated multi-core fiber. A second contact localization method which is based on identifying the discontinuity in the measured curvature, is also implemented and compared with the proposed method. The static and dynamic experiments show a mean average localization error of 2.3 mm and 4.3 mm which correspond to respectively 3.3% and 6.1% of a 70 mm long flexible robot. These findings demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms the previous methods and yield promising results. Entropy is a concept defined by the second law of thermodynamics. Applying this concept to the world we live in, entropy production must be minimized and negentropy (negative entropy production) should be accelerated, in order to produce a healthy and stable ecological system. The present wastewater treatment, however, contributes to entropy production. This means that conventional wastewater treatment, without recovery of resource and energy, will gradually but inevitably contribute to a deteriorating ecological balance. When the self-cleaning ability of the natural ecological system is limited, the need to develop sustainable wastewater treatment in order to delay entropy production and accelerate negentropy becomes urgent. Resource and energy recovery from wastewater should be the first priority, as they can contribute significantly towards minimizing entropy production and accelerating negentropy. Sustainable wastewater treatment must focus on recovering recyclable high value-added organic chemicals from wastewater and/or excess sludge to minimize entropy production caused by methane (CH4, once combusted, is converted into CO2 - an even higher substance in entropy) via anaerobic digestion. Instead of CH4, thermal energy present in the effluent can be utilized for heating/cooling buildings and also for drying excess sludge towards incineration to recover more energy. Sludge incineration and seawater desalination are two approaches that can be used in the disposal of waste activated sludge (WAS) and for obtaining fresh water. As resource recovery from wastewater treatment and water purification is a topic of particular interest in these times, “water mining” has become a focus of research, with phosphate/P-recovery from WAS incineration ash, and extraction of useful elements from the brine of desalination being important steps in the pursuit of a circular/blue economy. However, P-recovery from ash involves removing metals, which need to be disposed of carefully, as does the brine collected. If cations in the ash and anions in the brine could be combined in order to produce coagulants/flocculants, a new circular model would be established. A preliminary experiment for this purpose has demonstrated that a liquid poly‑aluminum chloride (PAC) could be synthesized from the aluminum ion/Al3+ removed from the ash and the original brine. With this work, we synthesized the liquid PAC by a hydrothermal method, and the results from infrared spectrometer demonstrated that the synthesized PAC was similar to a commercial PAC. Moreover, the synthesized PAC was able to efficiently reduce the effluent turbidity of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), especially when compared with the commercial PAC. Exploring more efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts to replace platinum (Pt) is highly desired to promote the practical hydrogen production through water splitting. Herein, a facile and effective strategy is proposed to fabricate self-standing Al3Ni2/Ni electrode with controlled phase composition and surface morphology, which is obtained by one-step electrochemical reduction of Al3+ on commercially available nickel in eutectic NaCl-KCl melt. Different from previously reported approaches, uniform Al3Ni2 monolith catalyst can directly grow onto Ni substrate. The deposit possesses unique three-dimensional (3D) cauliflower-like morphology comprising of nano- and microparticles due to the rapid nucleation rate during molten salt electrolysis. The as-fabricated Al3Ni2/Ni electrode can be directly used as the cathode to catalyze Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Impressively, it exhibits remarkable HER activity comparable to commercial Pt, including a low overpotential of 83.4 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 40.7 mV dec-1, and excellent long-term stability over 36 h of continuous HER operation in 0.5 M H2SO4 solution. The intrinsic catalytic ability of Al3Ni2 with the unique hierarchical structure of nano/microsized grains can offer multiple effects, including massive exposed active sites, enhanced charge transfer and mass transport, and fast gas releasing that synergistically contribute to improving the electrocatalytic performance of HER. A self-compacting steel slag epoxy resin concrete (SERC) was designed with steel slag as aggregate and epoxy resin as binder for rapid repair of road expansion joints and pavement. At the same time, a group of self-compacting basalt epoxy resin concrete (BERC) with basalt as coarse aggregate and limestone as fine aggregate was set up as the control group. The element analysis and micro morphology of SERC and BERC were studied by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) to reveal the strength-forming mechanism of the two epoxy resin concretes. The cube compression test and Marshall stability test were used to study the effect of the strength formation rate and temperature of SERC and BERC on the strength. In addition, the high-temperature stability, low-temperature crack resistance, water damage resistance, fatigue resistance and interlayer bonding properties of SERC and BERC were also studied. The results showed that both SERC and BERC have good mechanical properties, high temperature properties and good bonding properties, and the low-temperature crack resistance and fatigue properties of SERC are better than that of BERC. Interface engineering is a simple and effective strategy for improving the photovoltaic performance and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, an interface co-modification strategy is proposed, using [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and 2-fluoro-1,4-phenylenediammonium iodide (2FPPD) to modify the electron transport layer (ETL)/perovskite (PVK) and the PVK/hole transport layer (HTL) interfaces, respectively. A series of characterizations demonstrate that the PCBM&2FPPD interface co-modification strategy effectively enhances the extraction and transport efficiency of carriers at the interface, passivates surface defects, inhibits the nonradiative recombination of carriers, and simultaneously inhibits ion migration. Moreover, this strategy improves the crystallinity and surface hydrophobicity of PVK and optimizes the energy level alignment of PSCs. As a result, all photovoltaic parameters are improved after optimization, where the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs has increased from 17.01% to 18.36%. Ship energy consumption and emission prediction are critical for ship energy efficiency management and pollution gas emission control, both of which are major concerns for the shipping industry and hence continue to attract global attention and research interest. This article examined the energy efficiency data sources, big data analysis for energy efficiency, and analyzed the ship energy consumption and emission prediction models. The ship energy consumption and pollution gas emission prediction models are comprehensively summarized based on the modeling method and principles. The theoretical analysis and artificial intelligence-based ship energy consumption model, as well as the top-down and bottom-up ship emission prediction models, are thoroughly examined in terms of influencing factors, model accuracy, data sources, and practical applications. On this basis, the challenges of ship energy consumption and emission prediction are discussed, and future research suggestions are proposed, providing a foundation for the development of ship energy consumption and emission prediction technologies. The analysis results show that the principles, parameters of concern, and data quality all have a significant impact on the performance of the prediction models. Consequently, the prediction model's accuracy can be improved by combining intelligent algorithms and machine learning.
