Byline: Carel Roessingh, Linda Mol This article addresses the role of women in the labour system of the Mennonite entrepreneurs in a community in Belize, Central America. The labour system of the Mennonite enterprises is mainly organised independently of the general Belizean labour system. Mennonite women have gained a pivotal position in this independent system over the past years. Traditionally, Mennonite women stay at home to work in the domestic sphere. In recent years, however, their role has changed and they have increasingly started to work outside of the home. This has had major implications for the position of women in the community. In this article a description of the position of women in the Mennonite labour system will be provided using literature on the Mennonite women, combined with empirical data from the Mennonite community of Spanish Lookout, Belize.

Byline: Mary Kathleen Feeney Though many government agencies use mentoring programmes to advance women, there is a little research investigating whether mentoring produces significantly different results for women than men in the public sector. This paper investigates the role of mentoring in advancing the careers of women in the public sector by testing a series of hypotheses about the relationships between gender, mentor type (formal/informal and internal/external), and the outcomes of mentoring. The findings indicate that participating in mentorships increases public managers' career outcomes, measured as protege promotion and the number of employees supervised by the protege. Furthermore, though women are more likely to have female mentors, mentoring outcomes do not significantly vary by mentor gender. These findings point to the importance of mentoring in the public sector and call into question the focus on mentoring as a tool for advancing women in particular.

Byline: Greet Overbeek In the Netherlands, the task of earning an income and amassing property has shifted from the level of the household to that of its individual members. This also applies to agriculture and tourism-based family businesses in rural areas. The consequences of individualisation may be different for women who own a business or who are married to the owner of a business. Legal arrangements to divide and share property play an important role in this process. Relevant decisions are recorded in business and marriage agreements. In this article, the process of individualisation and its consequences for female spouses and business partners are analysed on the basis of the results of a survey among 331 farm women and 180 women in tourism. The results show that in agriculture few women own real estate and earn a taxable income of more than 10,000 euros. Half of the women in tourism own real estate and earn this amount of income. The differences between the women in the two sectors are the result of their labour position and the way they enter into marriage agreements concerning the division of property.

A follow-up to a study on women in the UK accounting profession conducted 10 years ago was made at the end of 1989. The study entailed a survey of women and male members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). Women now account for 10% of ICAEW membership, as opposed to 2.8% 10 years ago, and also account for one-third of trainees. In the future, women will be an important resource for the accounting profession as labor shortages come to the fore. The survey reveals that women in accounting are younger, more likely to specialize in taxation, and are more likely to work for a professional practice. Women accountants have similar careers to those of men until they have a child, after which their career is typified by a break in employment and part-time work. Work options women cite as being helpful for their careers include career-break schemes, parental leave, and childcare.
