This article examines documentary diary and essay films made in Israel/Palestine from 1973–2009, where windows play a central role as architectural elements, cinematic frames and embodiments of the relations between the private and public spheres. The films represent personal, artistic and political turning points: David Perlov's Diary, made in 1973–1977, began with the transformative event of the 1973 war, the film was a turning point in Israeli filmmaking which had until then consisted primarily of Zionist social realist documentaries and popular dramas; Michel Khleifi's Fertile Memory (1980), the director's feature documentary debut, it marked the beginning of a new period in Palestinian filmmaking, by its focus on personal rather than collective. The third example is Anat Even's Closure (2009), a camera positioned on a window reflects on death, loss and transformations in urban history. In all films, the window is both a physical and a symbolic space, mediating private and political, constituting a new material awareness of their interrelations, which is eliminated in contemporary technology based communication. The encounter between camera, window, and viewer reflects and facilitates the act of observing and engaging with conflicts, arguing that it is an opportunity for both self-reflection and political critique. This study reports the optimal solar thermal performance of two innovative configurations of air-vacuum layered triple glazed window or Integrated Vacuum Window (IVW). These are when the vacuum layer of IVW is facing the warm or indoor side, i.e. IVW warm , and when the vacuum layer of IVW is facing the cold or outdoor side, i.e. IVW cold , positions at dynamic solar insolation under winter and summer EN-ISO standard ambient conditions. A theoretically and experimentally validated finite element model is employed. The results show that in winter conditions, although the U-value of IVW warm of 0.33 Wm−2K−1 is lower than that of IVW cold of 0.49 Wm−2K−1, the IVW cold has a higher solar heat gain. In sunny winter conditions, IVW cold provides higher energy efficiency while in winter night, IVW warm provides higher energy efficiency than IVW cold. The results show that in summer conditions the U-value of IVW warm and IVW cold are 0.34 Wm−2K−1 and 0.51 Wm−2K−1 respectively, while IVW warm provides lower cooling-load and higher energy-efficiency compared to IVW cold. It is concluded that setting the vacuum gap at the indoor side position provides lower cooling-load and higher energy-efficiency compared to setting the vacuum cavity at the outdoor side position in summer ambient conditions. Comparing the incidence rate of in-hospital falls between patients hospitalized in window beds and nonwindow beds. Retrospective cohort study. A general hospital in Mie, Japan. A total of 2767 patients (mean age, 68.4 years) hospitalized in four-bedded rooms between January 2014 and December 2016. We identified patients' bed status (window/nonwindow) and the incidence of in-hospital falls using data on medical records and incidence reports, respectively. During an observation period of 25,450 person-days, 57 patients had in-hospital falls (incidence rate, 2.24/1000 person-days). Incidence rate for in-hospital falls was significantly lower in the window-bed group (n = 1273) than in the nonwindow-bed group (n = 1494) [incidence rate ratio (IRR) 0.49, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.29, 0.84]. In the multivariable analysis adjusted for age, gender, BMI, smoking and drinking habit, surgical operation during hospitalization, and independence in daily living, the window-bed group exhibited significantly lower incidence rate for in-hospital falls than the nonwindow-bed group (IRR 0.54, 95% CI 0.32, 0.93). Sensitivity analysis excluding patients aged <60 years suggested a consistent result: incidence rate for in-hospital falls was significantly lower in the window-bed group (n = 1123) than in the nonwindow-bed group (n = 925) (IRR 0.55, 95% CI 0.31, 0.95). The incidence rate of in-hospital falls was significantly lower among patients hospitalized in window beds than nonwindow beds. Hospitalization in window beds might be a novel, simple preventive option for in-hospital falls. Further large-scale, prospective, multicenter research is required. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research has shown that spending too much time indoors and disengagement from outdoor environmental stimuli may have detrimental health effects. These negative effects are even more serious in hospitals, where patients are highly stressed and have to spend most of their time indoors. Studies show that, in these situations, patients prefer to have a window with a desirable view. Although the desire for having a room with a view among hospital patients is well established, not all views are equally desirable. The parameters which make a view "desirable" are not well understood. This paper presents results of a large-scale human factors research study using patients' qualitative assessments on thousands of "view" photos (n = 2000), in order to provide a reliable foundation for developing a robust rating system to accurately quantify the desirability quality of views in healthcare settings. The results show that "distant" and "nature-dominant" views were, by far, the most desirable. Additionally, the results showed that while "water features" was also viewed desirable, views of moving cars and industrial settings were viewed most negatively. Moreover, the study revealed that natural views are not "always" more pleasant than urban views, and the positive reaction is mostly the result of aesthetic quality of the view content. Practical application : This study provides empirical confirmation that validates previous studies regarding the association of view content and building occupants' preference, specifically within healthcare settings. It also provides a reliable foundation for developing a robust rating system to accurately classify and quantify the quality of views in healthcare settings. Furthermore, the findings of this study can be used by designers to better incorporate the needs of healthcare design community and those who aim to consider view in the design stages of new built spaces or retrofit of existing spaces. Proof-of-principle gas-reservoir MnNiMg electrochromic mirror devices have been investigated. In contrast to conventional electrochromic approaches, hydrogen is stored (at low concentration) in the gas volume between glass panes of the insulated glass units (IGUs). The elimination of a solid state ion storage layer simplifies the layer stack, enhances overall transmission, and reduces cost. The cyclic switching properties were demonstrated and system durability improved with the incorporation a thin Zr barrier layer between the MnNiMg layer and the Pd catalyst. Addition of 9 percent silver to the palladium catalyst further improved system durability. About 100 full cycles have been demonstrated before devices slow considerably. Degradation of device performance appears to be related to Pd catalyst mobility, rather than delamination or metal layer oxidation issues originally presumed likely to present significant challenges.

Abstract The first year (December 2015 to November 2016) of IR2 after Akatsuki’s successful insertion to an elongated elliptical orbit around Venus is reported with performance evaluation and results of data acquisition. The single-stage Stirling-cycle cryo-cooler of IR2 has been operated with various driving voltages to achieve the best possible cooling under the given thermal environment. A total of 3091 images of Venus (1420 dayside images at 2.02 μm and 1671 night-side images at 1.735, 2.26, and 2.32 μm) were acquired in this period. Additionally, 159 images, including images of stars for calibration and dark images for the evaluation of noise levels, were captured. Low-frequency flat images (not available in pre-launch calibration data) have been constructed using the images of Venus acquired from near the pericenter to establish the procedure to correct for the IR2 flat-field response. It was noticed that multiple reflections of infrared light in the PtSi detector caused a weak but extended tail of the point-spread function (PSF), contaminating the night-side disk of Venus with light from the much brighter dayside crescent. This necessitated the construction of an empirical PSF to remove this contamination and also to improve the dayside data by deconvolution, and this work is also discussed. Detailed astrometry is performed on star-field images in the H-band (1.65 μm), hereby confirming that the geometrical distortion of IR2 images is negligible.

As office workers spend a lot of their working time in buildings, environment design aspects such as outward views can play a key role in their job satisfaction and work efficiency. The aim of this research is to study the effects of outward views on workers’ satisfaction with their environment. The assumption here is that people with better access to windows and outward view would express higher degrees of satisfaction with their work environment. Furthermore, the location of the worker in the building, it has been observed, plays a role in generating a sense of spatial airiness and desirability. Assessing measures of inward and outward views expressed by workers of Tehran District 1 municipality building, the research tries to clarify the role each one plays. The method used is based on quantitative studies, data collection through questionnaires, and their analysis using SPSS and Space Syntax’s Depthmap software. The findings demonstrate that in cases where workers have suitable outward but poor inward views, their satisfaction levels drop meaningfully. There are concluding design recommendations as to how to take the role of inward views into account and create outward views in office buildings.

Abstract Background Mosquitoes are vectors for many diseases such as malaria. Insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor residual spraying of insecticides are the principal malaria vector control tools used to prevent malaria in the tropics. Other interventions aim at reducing man-vector contact. For example, house screening provides additive or synergistic effects to other implemented measures. We used commercial screen materials made of polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene to design novel mosquito screens that provide remarkable additional benefits to those commonly used in house screening. The novel design is based on a double screen setup made of a screen with 3D geometric structures parallel to a commercial mosquito screen creating a trap between the two screens. Owing to the design of the 3D screen, mosquitoes can penetrate the 3D screen from one side but cannot return through the other side, making it a unidirectional mosquito screen. Therefore, the mosquitoes are trapped inside the double screen system. The permissiveness of both sides of the 3D screens for mosquitoes to pass through was tested in a wind tunnel using the insectary strain of Anopheles stephensi. Results Among twenty-five tested 3D screen designs, three designs from the cone, prism, or cylinder design groups were the most efficient in acting as unidirectional mosquito screens. The three cone-, prism-, and cylinder-based screens allowed, on average, 92, 75 and 64% of Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes released into the wind tunnel to penetrate the permissive side and 0, 0 and 6% of mosquitoes to escape through the non-permissive side, respectively. Conclusions A cone-based 3D screen fulfilled the study objective. It allowed capturing 92% of mosquitoes within the double screen setup inside the wind tunnel and blocked 100% from escaping. Thus, the cone-based screen effectively acted as a unidirectional mosquito screen. This 3D screen-based trap design could therefore be used in house screening as a means of avoiding infective bites and reducing mosquito population size.

Doing the replacement of old wooden windows in a new plastic windows, in the old buildings, we get the great reducing of the building heat loss. Simpler maintenance and attendance of window is the next advantage. New windows are characterized by better tightness. The aim of the article is determination due to the performed experimental measurements, how much more are reduce the uncontrolled ventilation that is caused of the infiltration windows. In the article there is presented the experimental measurement of indoor air quality in the room in two phases. In the first phase there is the room installed by 55 year old wood window. In the second phase there is the same room installed by new plastic window. Due to the experimental measurement of indoor air quality it is calculated intensity of ventilation - infiltration. These results of ventilation intensity are reciprocally compared.

This paper designs and realizes the control system of remote control of building windows with mobile phone APP. The system is composed of a mobile phone terminal, a master controller and an electric window opener. The mobile terminal sends a control instruction to the main controller, and the master controller controls the electric window opener to realize the opening, the suspension and the closing of the window. The design of the system realizes the real-time display of the state and position of the window on the mobile phone interface, and provides a practical technical scheme for conveniently and remotely controlling the window switch through the mobile phone.

Recently, much progress has been made in the representation of sentences for the task of natural language processing (NLP). Most of existing methods utilize deep learning methods with RNN/CNN to capture contextual information. These models typically treat each word in a sentence equally, which ignores the fact that keywords always play a leading role in expressing the sentence semantic. Especially, on the tasks of sentence classification and semantic relatedness prediction, we can judge through the information of several keywords, no need for the whole sentence. To this end, we propose a window-based intra-weighing approach to weigh words in the sentence. In calculating attentive weights, we take as input multi-window n-grams and use max-pooling for feature extraction. To evaluate our model, we conduct experiments on 6 benchmark data sets. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our model in calculating word importance. Although our model has fewer parameters and much lower computational complexity than state-of-the-art models, it achieves comparable results with them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this experimental study mainly focused the thermal property such as thermal resistance and heat transfer analysis for the air gap variations provided in between two glasses on window for the domestic purposes. Easily available surrounding air considered as the experimental mater because of its arrangements. Thermal resistance of inside, outside and glasses (both glasses have same thermal conductivity such as 0.78 W/mK) all are maintained as constant throughout the investigation. But only air gap distance increased from 2 mm to 14 mm with gradual increase focused. The thermal conductivity of air considered as 0.026 W/mK. Published in 1989, Richard McGuire's black-and-white strip has come to be regarded as a game changer that revolutionized narrative possibilities of graphic fiction. In the deceptively modest layout of the strip, McGuire created a multidimensional zone of small moments projected against the long horizon. The strip covers six pages of six panels each, but beginning with the fifth panel the reader encounters year-labeled "windows" of time that float freely into each frame of action. This frame-within-frame layout encourages rereading and flipping back and forth between the panels. Instead of linear progression, "Here" conflates time and space to generate multiple dimensionalities that become simultaneously present. With the focus centered on the dynamics of simultaneity, this paper examines the framing devices and narrative strategies which introduce multiple and overlapping temporalities by means of visual and verbal juxtapositions. Conventional window technologies tend to have poor thermal transmittance coefficients (U-values) which cause significant heat loss during the winter season and undesired heat gain in the summer. This study reports a new procedure to calculate center glass U-values of triple and quadruple windows which include low-emissive radiant energy veils – shades and blinds with spectrally selective coatings – between the outermost glass panes. A numerical zonal model is developed to simulate a net radiation system coupled with finite difference and ray tracing methods using validated derived experimental equations. A parametric investigation is carried out wherein the influence of different parameters such as optical properties, inter-pane distances and slat angles of the blinds on the thermal performance of the glazing system are analyzed. Three different gas fill types are examined under realistic boundary conditions. The human biological clock, also known as circadian rhythm, is mainly synchronized by the light perceived, specifically short-wavelength. Insufficient access to daylight or equivalent electric lighting can compromise human health and well-being. The effect of light on the circadian rhythm is greater in children and adolescents than in adults, making lighting design for classrooms important for good circadian entrainment for students. This research shows the results of circadian stimulus autonomy, that is to say, the percentage of days during the year when circadian stimulus is above a minimum threshold in typical classroom designs. Circadian stimulus, promoted by either natural or electric lighting, is quantified. The venue studied has a window of variable size, position and orientation, as well as different reflectance values of the inner surfaces for a classroom under three typical sky conditions. As deduced from the results, the reflectance of the environment has a noticeable effect on circadian entrainment, as well as on the spectral distribution of the light source. By the methods of continuum mechanics, the authors consider the problems of high-velocity (of the order of 10 km/s) interaction between aluminum and steel spherical particles of diameters no larger than 2·10–4cm and a thick fused-quartz (silica) target with account of the destruction and different states of aggregation of a substance, and also of the dependence of the strength characteristics of materials on the internal energy. Mathematical modeling is carried out within the framework of the Prandtl–Reuss elastic perfectly plastic model. The mechanism of destruction is determined by successively developing processes of growth and coalescence of micropores in the volumes under tensile stresses. To describe the behavior of a substance in wide ranges of variation in pressure and temperature, use is made of an interpolation wide-range equation of state which includes a melting curve and a two-phase region. The application-relevant region of interaction of the order of orbital (first) and escape (second) space velocities is difficult to experimentally investigate directly. Digital audio is one of the most important types of data at present. It is used in several applications, such as human knowledge and many security and banking applications. A digital voice signal is usually of a large size where the acoustic signal consists of a set of values distributed in one column (one channel) (mono signal) or distributed in two columns (two channels) (stereo signal), these values usually are the results of sampling and quantization of the original analogue voice signal. In this paper we will introduce a method which can be used to create a signature or key, which can be used later to identify or recognize the wave file. In line with the growing global trend towards energy efficiency in buildings, this paper introduces a predictive model based on an artificial neural network model to rate the performance of windows in terms of saved heating and cooling loads. A four-story building representing the conventional type of residential apartments in Iran for four climates of cold, hot and humid, hot and arid, and temperate was selected for simulation. An artificial neural network model was developed based on ten variables of U-factor, SHGC, emissivity, monthly average dry bulb temperature, monthly average percent humidity, monthly average wind speed, monthly average direct solar radiation, monthly average diffuse solar radiation, orientation, and month as the input variables. The developed ANN model computes the amount of saved heating or cooling loads as a result of using a window with defined parameters. The best architecture of 10–10-1 with MAPE, RMSE, and R2 values of 1.4%, 0.008, and 0.985, respectively showed an acceptable predictive performance of the model. The predictions of this model, in line with the four levels of window performance defined in this paper, which range from excellent performance to weak performance, constitute the final rating of a window. The rated performance of the windows used in this study showed that the performance of a window can vary in cold and hot months, and windows should be rated according to the climate in which they are being used. Data bits are switched around by using bus wires when data transmission is conducted on an on-chip bus. The data is transmitted through the capsule network, but due to the long routing path, the power is wasted and the data transmission causes a delay. The data bits are transmitted in the capsule network, using wires by switching technique. This switching causes discharging and charging of the capacitance that is associated with the wires. Thus, the delay is increased and then dynamic power dissipation takes place. Sending or receiving data is required to modify data values which are transmitted on the buses for decreasing the switching movement in that way the amount of power consumed by the bus falls and the delay of the on-chip bus. Bus encoding is most commonly used for reducing this bus transition activity. In this study, a probability adaptive bus encoding technique is applied based on a proposed fixed window. The entire window was applied to the transition probability. The average transitional probability condition is used to form a cluster with highly correlated switching patterns. The clustered information is transformed into a grey code. Temporal redundancy in time is utilized in the proposed method for prevent the information loss that occurs during data retrieval. There is an additional power cost because of the circuitry of the encoder and decoder. The cluster efficiency for the proposed encoding technique has been improved by up to 75%. The Electron Cyclotron diamond window which is located inside the port cell serves, together with an isolation valve, as primary vacuum boundary between the ITER vacuum vessel, the transmission lines and the port cell atmosphere and it functions as confinement barrier. The window consists of an ultra-low loss Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamond disk brazed into a metallic housing and it has to guarantee the compliance with very stringent nuclear safety requirements and an adequate transmission capability for high power mm-waves (1.31 MW at 170 GHz). The design of the window unit is approaching its final phase including design validation analyses, the development of a dedicated qualification program and prototyping activities. In preparation of the testing of complete window prototypes, pressure tests were performed on a mock-up formed by a diamond disk (D = 80 mm, d = 1.11 mm) brazed to two copper cuffs. The scope of the experiments was to show both the capability of the joining between the disk and the cuffs to keep the required vacuum tightness as well as the integrity of the disk when exposed to pressure loads. Based on the requirements defined for the pressure scenarios during normal operation and off-normal events, a test program was developed accounting for cyclic tests at low pressure differentials and overpressure tests up to 2 bar pressure difference over the disk to simulate severe accidental conditions. This paper gives an outline of the ongoing development of the overall qualification program of the ITER torus window and reports specifically on the experimental set-up and the successful outcome of the pressure tests of the brazed diamond disk mock-up. The test program for the complete window prototype needs discussion and approval by F4E and ITER and will directly determine the final qualification program for the series diamond windows. In 1978, Illness as Metaphor emerged from author Susan Sontag inspiring agency in challenging the existence of institutionalised metaphors present in illness discourse. From the concept that life is complex and burdensome in its dual citizenship with death, Sontag writes '[t] he metaphor implements the way particularly dreaded diseases are envisaged as an alien 'other', as enemies are in modern war'.1 Sontag's position calls for the dismissal of illness metaphors that occupy this negative connotation and propagate discouragement, silence and/or shame in the mind of the patient. This chapter is intended to challenge that systemic thinking and offer a new alternative to established metaphors pervading illness discourse. Based on my personal journey with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (aml), the intention of this discourse is to illustrate a re-contextualisation of my illness experience through a dharma art practice. Concentrated on diagnosis, treatment, and healing, a meditative practice is intricately woven with creative production to provide a documented articulation of the liminal spaces found in the memory of my illness. In this research, the process of aesthetising illness promotes healing and unearths a new metaphor to consider for illness discourse. Metaphors are similar to maps, providing an understanding of one kind of experience in terms of another.2 As a map, the metaphor charts an intellectual terrain that shifts the perspective of experience from here to there. In employing poetry, photography, and video, a visualisation of process communicates a reframed experience with illness and maps the process of healing - my transformation from here to there. In producing a body of research that blends spirituality with creativity, a sophisticated response to my illness is located. As an empowered and impassioned voice, this presentation offers a new, positive metaphor for illness discourse intended to inspire and heal - illness is a window. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Aortopulmonary window (APW) is a rare congenital cardiac defect accounting for 0.1% to 0.2% of all congenital cardiac defects. We here present the current midterm outcome of surgical repair of APW in patients more than 3 months of age.Methods: The retrospective study was conducted to identify all the patients more than 3 months of age at presentation who underwent surgical repair of APW between June 2010 and August 2018 at our tertiary care institute and their outcome was analyzed.Results: We found 14 patients of APW operated at the age of more than 3 months over a period of 8 years. Mean age of the cohort was 2.29 ± 2.96 years ranging from 3 months to 10 years with 57.14% being males. There were 11 (78.57%) patients with isolated APW and 3 (21.43%) had associated cardiac defects including tetralogy of Fallot (n = 1), ventricular septal defect (n = 1), subaortic membrane causing subaortic stenosis (n = 1), and one had extracardiac malformations. Two patients had type I, nine had type II, and three had type III APW as per Jacobs' classification. The mean size of the defect was 14.14 ± 4.33 mm. Mean duration of mechanical ventilation was 26.91 ± 16.65 hours (range, 12.25-67 hours). There was one in-hospital mortality and no late mortality over a mean follow-up of 3.06 ± 2.19 years. None of the patients required any kind of reintervention.Conclusion: Good results can be obtained even on late presentation with adequate perioperative care of the patients with the reversible pulmonary hypertensive disease. Abstract Today there is increasing interest and demand for energy savings in the building sector. Windows still represent a weak point in the building envelope with respect to thermal performance due to thermal losses from the interior to the exterior as well as overheating of the interior due to excessive solar radiation from the exterior environment into the interior. However, windows and glazing structures enable the utilisation of daylight and heat from incident solar radiation, while at the same time providing comfort and a view to the outdoor surroundings. Multipane glazing and windows may represent a possible way to lower energy consumption related to heating and cooling. In this study, a multipane glazing structure, more specifically a 6-pane glazing, has been constructed and investigated with regard to various properties and possibilities. The general configuration of the 6-pane glazing is described. Furthermore, properties such as U -value, solar energy transmittance, visible transmittance, solar heat gain coefficient, glass pane temperatures, vapour permeability, economical aspects, and comfort of living, among others, are analysed. Finally, a case study is presented that demonstrates a 50% reduction in the annual energy consumption after renovation with this 6-pane glazing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Endgame" is one of Samuel Beckett's well-known dramas in addition to "Waiting for Godot". It is described as a complex voyage that is written before we may understand the way to read or criticize such drama. Attempting to comprehend "Endgame" means comprehending its mystery. "Endgame" is an experience through which man lives an isolation while he misses the lost past to have a sense of meaning and identity. Isolation, sterility relations and death result in pain and worry in the environment the characters live in. The play opens with a silent show, no words at all. The setting is a small room with two small windows, two covered dustbins, a chair in the centre, and a door. The light in the room is grey. The chair in the middle is covered by a sheet. Clov, one of the characters, holds the ladder, moves from one window to the other to open the arras. Then, he removes the sheet from the only chair that lies in the middle of the room to wake up Hamm, the main character or one can say the master of the game. The main event in the play is the relationship between Hamm and Clov and whether Clov is going to leave Hamm or not. Hamm provides shelter and food, while Clov provides his services through his legs and eyes. The current research addresses the Sterility Relationship between the characters of "Endgame".
