This exploratory study investigated the nature of sexual orientation (categorical or spectrum) by assessing the relative ability of sexual and romantic indicators to be predicted by sexual orientation labels. Young adults from a variety of community and college venues (N =292) reported their sexual orientation label on a 9-point scale; from a 10-item list, their sexual identity; and the percentage of their sexual attraction, fantasy, genital contact, infatuation, and romantic relationship directed to males and females. Although the five indicators were significantly intercorrelated and sexual orientation labels predicted each indicator, discrepancies existed across indicators in relationship to sexual orientation (highest for attraction, lowest for romantic relationship). Sexual identity and sexual orientation label were strongly related at the ends of the sexual spectrum, less so in the middle. Men were nearly as nonexclusive as women. Study results supported the perspective that sexual orientation is a continuously distributed individual characteristic.

We reviewed whether mostly heterosexuals, a sexual orientation group characterized by a small amount of same-sex sexuality, differ from heterosexuals and bisexuals on a variety of mental and physical health outcomes (e.g., internalizing problems, body dissatisfaction and disordered eating, obesity, sexual/reproductive health, physical health), health risk behaviors (e.g., substance use, sexual risk taking), and risk and protective factors (e.g., victimization, stressful/risky environment, socioeconomic status, personal and social relationships, gender nonconformity). A narrative and quantitative literature review was conducted of 60 papers covering 22 samples from five Western countries. Individual, mean, and median effect sizes (Cohen ds) were calculated whenever possible. Mostly heterosexuals reported higher levels of risk in most reviewed outcomes compared to heterosexuals (unweighted mean effect sizes ranged from 0.20 to 0.50) but typically somewhat lower than bisexuals (unweighted mean effect sizes ranged from -0.10 to -0.30). Various risk factors frequently reduced, but rarely eliminated, health disparities between mostly heterosexuals and heterosexuals. Findings are discussed through the lens of three potential explanations of elevated health risks among nonheterosexuals: minority stress, nonheterosexual lifestyles, and common causes. Because data on many outcomes were scarce or missing, particularly for men and in comparison with bisexuals, further research is needed.

Conflicting evidence exists regarding whether bisexual-identified men are sexually aroused to both men and women. We hypothesized that a distinct characteristic, level of curiosity about sexually diverse acts, distinguishes bisexual-identified men with and without bisexual arousal. Study 1 assessed men's (n=277) sexual arousal via pupil dilation to male and female sexual stimuli. Bisexual men were, on average, higher in their sexual curiosity than other men. Despite this general difference, only bisexual-identified men with elevated sexual curiosity showed bisexual arousal. Those lower in curiosity had responses resembling those of homosexual men. Study 2 assessed men's (n=72) sexual arousal via genital responses and replicated findings of Study 1. Study 3 provided information on the validity on our measure of sexual curiosity by relating it to general curiosity and sexual sensation seeking (n=83). Objective: To determine the patient- and device-specific risk factors for hospital-acquired peripherally inserted central venous catheter-related bloodstream infections (PICC BSIs) in adult patients., Design: Nested case-control study., Setting: Barnes-Jewish Hospital, a 1,252-bed tertiary care teaching hospital., Patients: Adult patients with PICCs placed from January 1, 2006, through July 31, 2008., Methods: PICC BSI cases were identified using the National Healthcare Safety Network definition. Uninfected control patients with PICCs in place were randomly selected at a 3∶1 ratio. Patient- and device-related variables were examined using multivariate analysis., Results: The overall PICC BSI rate was 3.13 per 1,000 catheter-days. Independent risk factors for PICC BSIs included congestive heart failure (odds ratio [OR], 2.0 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.26-3.17]; P = .003), intra-abdominal perforation (OR, 5.66 [95% CI, 1.76-18.19]; P = .004), Clostidium difficile infection (OR, 2.25 [95% CI, 1.17-4.33]; P = .02), recent chemotherapy (OR, 3.36 [95% CI, 1.15-9.78]; P = .03), presence of tracheostomy (OR, 5.88 [95% CI, 2.99-11.55]; P < .001), and type of catheter (OR for double lumen, 1.89 [95% CI, 1.15-3.10]; P = .01 ; OR for triple lumen, 2.87 [95% CI, 1.39-5.92]; P = .004). Underlying chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR, 0.48 [95% CI, 0.29-0.78]; P = .03) and admission to surgical (OR, 0.43 [95% CI, 0.24-0.79]; P = .006) or oncology and orthopedic (OR, 0.35 [95% CI, 0.13-0.99]; P = .05) services were less likely to be associated with having a PICC BSI., Conclusions: We identified several novel factors related to PICC BSIs. These factors may inform preventive measures.

Studies have reported that the oral health status is jeopardized in patients with eating disorders. The aim was to review the oro-facial manifestations in patients with eating disorders. The address the focused question was "What is the oro-dental health status in patients with eating disorders?" MEDLINE/PubMed and Google Scholar databases were searched from 1948 to March 2012 using the following terms in various combinations: "Anorexia nervosa", "bulimia nervosa", "eating disorders", "dental", "oral health status". Letters to the editor, unpublished data and articles published in languages other than English were excluded. Dry lips, burning tongue and parotid gland swelling are common manifestations in patients with eating disorders as compared to medically healthy controls. The association of dental caries and periodontal disease in patients with eating disorders remains debatable. Temporomandibular disorders have also been reported to be more prevalent in patients with eating disorders as compared to healthy controls. A critical oral-dental examination during routine dental check-ups may reveal valuable information regarding the presence or absence of eating disorders in routine dental patients. Recent research suggests profound sex and sexual orientation differences in sexual response. These results, however, are based on measures of genital arousal, which have potential limitations such as volunteer bias and differential measures for the sexes. The present study introduces a measure less affected by these limitations. We assessed the pupil dilation of 325 men and women of various sexual orientations to male and female erotic stimuli. Results supported hypotheses. In general, self-reported sexual orientation corresponded with pupil dilation to men and women. Among men, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in bisexual-identified men. In contrast, among women, substantial dilation to both sexes was most common in heterosexual-identified women. Possible reasons for these differences are discussed. Because the measure of pupil dilation is less invasive than previous measures of sexual response, it allows for studying diverse age and cultural populations, usually not included in sexuality research.

Fresh and fresh-cut tomatoes have been associated with numerous outbreaks of salmonellosis in recent years. One effective post harvest treatment to reduce Salmonella enterica in tomatoes may be high pressure processing (HPP). The objectives of the study were to determine the potential for HPP to reduce S. enterica serovars Newport, Javiana, Braenderup and Anatum in tryptic soy broth (TSB) and to determine the effect of HPP to reduce the most pressure resistant of the four serovars from fresh diced and whole tomatoes. To evaluate pressure resistance, TSB containing 8 log CFU/ml of one of the four serovars was packaged in sterile stomacher bags and subjected to one of three different pressures (350, 450 or 550MPa) for 120s. The most pressure resistant S. enterica serovar evaluated was Braenderup. Subjecting the broth culture to 350, 450 and 550MPa resulted in a 4.53, 5.74 and 7.09 log reduction in S. Braenderup, respectively. Diced tomatoes (150g) and whole red round tomatoes (approximately 150g) were inoculated with 0.1ml of 9.1 log CFU/ml S. Braenderup, and subjected to the same pressure treatments (350, 450 or 550MPa). Significant reductions of S. Braenderup concentrations in diced tomatoes (P<0.05) were seen after processing at 350 (0.46CFU/g), 450 (1.44 log CFU/g), and 550MPa (3.67 log CFU/g). In whole tomatoes, significant reductions (P<0.05) were also seen at 350 (1.41 log CFU/g), 450 (2.25 log CFU/g) and 550MPa (3.35 log CFU/g). HPP may be an effective post harvest strategy to reduce low levels of S. enterica contamination in whole and diced tomatoes., (Published by Elsevier B.V.)

Scientific information regarding normative patterns of young men's sexual behavior is insufficient, especially regarding the impact of sex of partner. We explored the age at which 255 young adult men achieved several milestones (e.g., first kiss, manual-genital contact, intercourse) as well as the sequence of milestone achievement and stability in sex-of-partner preferences as a function of sex-of-partner experiences. Mean ages of milestone achievement were consistent with the extant empirical literature. Men with only female partners were younger at first kiss and first relationship, and older at first intercourse than men with only male partners; they also reported an almost universal sequence of milestone achievement and little change in sex-of-partner preferences. Most men with male partners reported increased preference for male partners over time. Men with partners of both sexes tended to demonstrate patterns consistent with the relevant sex-of-partner group. The link between adolescent sexual activity and psychological well-being is a controversial issue in developmental psychology. This cross-sectional study investigated the association between three aspects of teenage sexuality (genital sexual experience, age of sexual onset, and number of sex partners) and positive well-being (hedonic, eudaimonic, and overall) in a sample of 475 high school seniors (48% female; 89% White) from a single school district in a rural upstate New York community. Based on a group-norms perspective, we expected higher well-being in adolescents whose sexual behaviors followed group-normative patterns. As expected, sexually experienced and on-time (at age 16) students reported higher well-being than sexually inexperienced or late-onset (17 or older) students. Contrary to expectations, a high number of sex partners and an early sexual onset (15 or younger) were not related to lower well-being. Early-onset girls reported higher levels of well-being than normative-onset peers. Findings are discussed in relationship to theoretical perspectives and past empirical findings of teenage sexuality as a developmental asset versus risk.

Aims/hypothesis: We sought to identify the physiological implications of genetic variation at the HLA-DRB1 region in full-heritage Pima Indians in Arizona., Methods: Single-nucleotide polymorphisms from the HLA region on chromosome 6p were tested for association with skeletal muscle mRNA expression of HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DRA, and with type 2 diabetes mellitus and prediabetic traits., Results: The A allele at rs9268852, which tags HLA-DRB1 02(1602), was associated both with higher HLA-DRB1 mRNA expression (n = 133, p = 4.27 × 10(-14)) and decreased risk of type 2 diabetes (n = 3,265, OR 0.723, p = 0.002). Among persons with normal glucose tolerance (n = 266) this allele was associated with a higher mean acute insulin response during an intravenous glucose tolerance test (p = 0.005), higher mean 30 min insulin concentration during an oral glucose tolerance test (p = 0.017) and higher body fat percentage (p = 0.010). The polymorphism was not associated with HLA-DRA mRNA expression or insulin sensitivity., Conclusions/interpretation: HLA-DRB1*02 is protective for type 2 diabetes, probably by enhancing self tolerance, thereby protecting against the autoimmune-mediated reduction of insulin secretion.

Environmental factors encountered during growing and harvesting may contribute to Escherichia coli O157:H7 contamination of lettuce. Limited nutrients and extended exposure to water may cause E. coli O157:H7 to shed its O antigen. Absence of the O157-polysaccharide antigen could affect the cell's physicochemical properties (hydrophobicity and cell charge) and ultimately influence its attachment to surfaces. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the effect of the E. coli O157:H7 O-antigen on the cell's overall hydrophobicity, charge and ability to attach to cut edge and whole leaf iceberg lettuce surfaces. Three strains of E. coli O157:H7 (86-24 wild type; F-12, mutant lacking the O-antigen and pRFBE, plasmid for O157 gene reintroduced) were examined for their hydrophobicity, overall charge and ability to attach to lettuce. Overall, E. coli O157:H7 attached at higher levels to cut surfaces over whole leaf surfaces (P=0.008) for all strains and treatments. Additionally, the strain lacking the O-antigen (F12)-attached significantly less to lettuce (P=0.015) than the strains expressing the antigen (WT and pRFBE). Cells lacking the O antigen (strain F-12) were also significantly more hydrophobic than strains 86-24 or pRFBE (P≤0.05). Surface charge differed among the strains tested (P≤0.05); however, it did not appear to influence bacterial attachment to lettuce surfaces. The charge was not fully restored in the pRFBE strain (expression of O-antigen reintroduced), therefore, no conclusions can be made pertaining to the effect of charge on attachment in this study. Results indicate that E. coli O157:H7 cells which lack the O-antigen have greater hydrophobicity and attach at lower concentrations than cells expressing the O-antigen, to iceberg lettuce surfaces., (Published by Elsevier B.V.)

Child food insecurity is measured using parental reports of children's experiences based on an adult-generated conceptualization. Research on other child experiences (e.g. pain, exposure to domestic violence) cautions that children generally best report their own experiences, and parents' reports of children's experiences may lack adequate validity and impede effective intervention. Because this may be true of child food insecurity, we conducted semistructured interviews with mothers, children (age 9-16 y), and other household adults in 26 South Carolina families at risk for food insecurity. Interview transcripts were analyzed using a constant comparative process combining a priori with inductive coding. Child interviews revealed experiences of food insecurity distinct from parent experiences and from parent reports of children's experiences. Children experienced cognitive, emotional, and physical awareness of food insecurity. Children took responsibility for managing food resources through participation in parental strategies, initiation of their own strategies, and generation of resources to provide food for the family. Adults were not always aware of children's experiences. Where adult experiences of food insecurity are conditioned on inadequate money for food, child experiences were grounded in the immediate household social and food environment: quality of child/parent interactions, parent affect and behavior, and types and quantities of foods made available for children to eat. The new, child-derived understanding of what children experience that results from this study provides a critical basis from which to build effective approaches to identify, assess, and respond to children suffering from food insecurity.

Periodontal diseases constitute one of the major global oral health burdens, and periodontitis remains a major cause of tooth loss in adults worldwide. The World Health Organization recently reported that severe periodontitis exists in 5-20% of adult populations, and most children and adolescents exhibit signs of gingivitis. Likely reasons to account for these prevalent diseases include genetic, epigenetic, and environmental risk factors, as well as individual and socio-economic determinants. Currently, there are fundamental gaps in knowledge of such fundamental issues as the mechanisms of initiation and progression of periodontal diseases, which are undefined; inability to identify high-risk forms of gingivitis that progress to periodontitis; lack of evidence on how to prevent the diseases effectively; inability to detect disease activity and predict treatment efficacy; and limited information on the effects of integration of periodontal health as a part of the health care program designed to promote general health and prevent chronic diseases. In the present report, 12 basic, translational, and applied research areas have been proposed to address the issue of global periodontal health inequality. We believe that the oral health burden caused by periodontal diseases could be relieved significantly in the near future through an effective global collaboration.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to clarify the nature and extent of impairment in time- versus event-based prospective memory in Parkinson's disease (PD). Prospective memory is thought to involve cognitive processes that are mediated by prefrontal systems and are executive in nature. Given that individuals with PD frequently show executive dysfunction, it is important to determine whether these individuals may have deficits in prospective memory that could impact daily functions, such as taking medications. Although it has been reported that individuals with PD evidence impairment in prospective memory, it is still unclear whether they show a greater deficit for time- versus event-based cues., Method: Fifty-four individuals with PD and 34 demographically similar healthy adults were administered a standardized measure of prospective memory that allows for a direct comparison of time-based and event-based cues. In addition, participants were administered a series of standardized measures of retrospective memory and executive functions., Results: Individuals with PD demonstrated impaired prospective memory performance compared to the healthy adults, with a greater impairment demonstrated for the time-based tasks. Time-based prospective memory performance was moderately correlated with measures of executive functioning, but only the Stroop Neuropsychological Screening Test emerged as a unique predictor in a linear regression., Conclusions: Findings are interpreted within the context of McDaniel and Einstein's (2000) multiprocess theory to suggest that individuals with PD experience particular difficulty executing a future intention when the cue to execute the prescribed intention requires higher levels of executive control., ((c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)

Background: Limited data on the risk of peripherally inserted central venous catheter-associated bloodstream infections (PICC BSIs) in hospitalized patients are available. In 2007, dedicated intravenous therapy nurses were no longer available to place difficult peripheral intravenous catheters or provide PICC care Barnes-Jewish Hospital., Objectives: To determine the hospital-wide incidence of PICC BSIs and to assess the effect of discontinuing intravenous therapy service on PICC use and PICC BSI rates., Setting: A 1,252-bed tertiary care teaching hospital., Methods: A 31-month retrospective cohort study was performed. PICC BSIs were defined using National Healthcare Safety Network criteria., Results: In total, 163 PICC BSIs were identified (3.13 BSIs per 1,000 catheter-days). PICC use was higher in intensive care units (ICUs) than non-ICU areas (PICC utilization ratio, 0.109 vs 0.059 catheter-days per patient-day for ICU vs non-ICU; rate ratio [RR], 1.84 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.78-1.91]). PICC BSI rates were higher in ICUs (4.79 vs 2.79 episodes per 1,000 catheter-days; RR, 1.7 [95% CI, 1.10-2.61]). PICC use increased hospital-wide after the intravenous therapy service was discontinued (0.049 vs 0.097 catheter-days per patient-day; P =.01), but PICC BSI rates did not change (2.68 vs 3.63 episodes per 1,000 catheter-days; P =.06). Of PICC BSIs, 73% occurred in non-ICU patients., Conclusions: PICC use and PICC BSI rates were higher in ICUs; however, most of the PICC BSIs occurred in non-ICU areas. Reduction in intravenous therapy services was associated with increased PICC use across the hospital, but PICC BSI rates did not increase.

This study investigated the effects of packaging and storage temperature on the spinach phylloepiphytic bacterial community and fate of Escherichia coli O157:H7. Freshly harvested spinach was rinsed and/or disinfected, packaged and stored under typical retail conditions (4 degrees C) or under temperature abuse conditions (10 degrees C) for a period of 15 days. The final population size of culturable epiphytic bacteria after 15 days of storage was not affected by the temperature of storage or the presence of E. coli O157:H7. However, analysis of the bacterial community using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis of 16s rDNA revealed changes with time of storage and the presence of E. coli O157:H7. Excision and sequencing of prominent DGGE bands identified that the majority of sequences belonged to the phyla Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Alphaprotebacteria. After 10 days of storage at 4 degrees C or 10 degrees C the population became more dominated by psychrotrophic bacteria. Removal of the epiphytic bacteria resulted in significant increases in numbers of E coli O157:H7 at 10 degrees C and was associated with decreased expression of E. coli O157:H7 virulence (stxA, curli, eaeA) and stress response (rpoS, sodB) genes. In conclusion, storage temperature and time of storage of packaged spinach affected the diversity of the epiphytic spinach microbiota which influenced the growth, establishment, physiology and potentially virulence of E. coli O157:H7., (2010 Elsevier Ltd. Previous research has suggested that chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) display higher levels of aggression in captivity than in the wild. One of the challenges of captive management, therefore, is to balance the chimpanzees' need for social interaction with managements' desire to minimize wounding and aggression. Various captive studies have examined the effects of individual and social variables on the frequency of wounding aggression, but none have examined these variables simultaneously. We collected retrospective wounding data for severe wounds from 83 captive chimpanzees (36 males, 47 females) from January 1993 to December 2003. The context of the wounding event, including individual age and sex, group age and sex composition, group duration, and portion of the week (weekday vs. weekend) were collected. Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine which variables had a significant effect on the probability of a severe wounding event. The sex and age composition of the group, group duration, and portion of the week had a statistically significant association with wounding. All-male groups (Odds Ratio (OR)=6.738) had the highest risk of wounding aggression, with uni-male groups (OR=3.311) having the next largest. Compared to individuals in all sub-adult groups, individuals in either all-adult (OR=4.516) or mixed-age (OR=3.587) groups had a higher risk of wounding. There was an inverse association between group duration and wounding (OR=0.821). Finally, there was an increased risk of wounding during the work week (OR=1.653). These results suggest that captive management should pay close attention to group composition, as well as levels of human activity, when devising strategies to reduce captive chimpanzee aggression., ((c) 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Cinnamic acid (CA), a naturally occurring organic acid found in fruits and spices, has antimicrobial activity against spoilage and pathogenic bacteria, but low aqueous solubility limits its use. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of solubility-enhancing alpha-cyclodextrin-CA inclusion complexes against Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella enterica serovars suspended in apple cider or orange juice at two different incubation temperatures (4 and 26 degrees Celsius). Two concentrations (400 and 1,000 mg/liter) of alpha-cyclodextrin-CA inclusion complex were aseptically added to apple cider inoculated with E. coli O157:H7 (7 log CFU/ml) and orange juice inoculated with a cocktail of six Salmonella enterica serovars (7 log CFU/ml). Samples were extracted at 0 min, at 2 min, and at 24-h intervals for 7 days, serially diluted in 0.1 % peptone, spread plated in duplicate onto tryptic soy agar, and incubated at 35 degrees Celsius for 24 h. Populations of E. coli O157:H7 in apple cider were significantly reduced (P < or = 0.05) during the 7-day sampling period in all solutions regardless of temperature. Compared with the controls, populations were significantly reduced by the addition of 400 and 1,000 mg/liter inclusion complex, but reductions were not significantly different (P > or = 0.05) between the two treatment groups (400 and 1,000 mg/liter). Salmonella was significantly reduced in all solutions regardless of temperature. There were significant differences between the control and each inclusion complex concentration at 4 and 26 degrees Celsius. Coupled with additional processing steps, alpha-cyclodextrin-CA inclusion complexes may provide an alternative to traditional heat processes.

Currently, little is known about heterosexually identified individuals who nonetheless acknowledge same-sex interests. To address this shortcoming, the prevalence of same-sex attractions, fantasies, and experiences among heterosexually identified college students was examined, as well as differences between those who are exclusively heterosexual in their interests and those who are nonexclusive because they report some same-sex attractions or fantasies. Students (N = 243) at a large, Northeastern university completed an online survey providing information about their sexual orientation identity; same- and other-sex attractions, fantasies, and behaviors; and demographic, sexual history, and sexual attitudes variables. Compared to exclusive heterosexual women, nonexclusive women were more liberal in their political and sexual attitudes and had greater sexual experience. Nonexclusive men were virtually indistinguishable from exclusive heterosexual peers on assessed variables. Results are discussed in terms of implications for the nature and meaning of non-heterosexuality in contemporary Western society.

The purpose of this research was to establish the dose of UV light (253.7 nm) needed to inactivate Listeria monocytogenes in distilled water, fresh brine (9% NaCl), spent brine, and diluted (5, 35, and 55%) spent brine, using uridine as a chemical actinometer. Strains N1-227 (isolated from hot dog batter), N3-031 (isolated from turkey franks), and R2-499 (isolated from meat) were mixed in equal proportions and suspended in each solution prepared so as to contain 10(-4) M uridine. Samples were irradiated in sterile quartz cells for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 min. Inactivation was evaluated by serially diluting samples in 0.1% peptone, by surface plating in duplicate onto modified Oxford agar and Trypticase soy agar with yeast extract, and by enrichment in brain heart infusion broth, followed by incubation at 37 degrees C for 24 to 48 h. For dose measurements, the absorbance (262 nm) was measured before and after irradiation. Differences were observed in population estimates depending on the solution (P < or = 0.05). Reductions were as follows from greatest to least: water > fresh brine > 5% spent brine > 35% spent brine > 55% spent brine > undiluted spent brine. UV light did not significantly reduce populations suspended in spent brine solutions. L. monocytogenes decreased to below the detection limit (1 log CFU/ml) at doses greater than 33.2 mJ/cm(2) in water and at doses greater than 10.3 mJ/cm(2) in fresh brine. Knowledge of UV dosing required to control L. monocytogenes in brines similar to those used for ready-to-eat meat processing will aid manufacturers in establishing appropriate food safety interventions for these products.

Background: New strategies for periodontal disease management have been emerging as more is learned about the role of the host response. Our increasing understanding of inflammation and its resolution has opened the door to the study of new periodontal treatment strategies. This review examines periodontal disease in the light of a new understanding of the role of inflammation in disease expression thus setting the stage for the development of new prevention and treatment strategies of a widespread disease., Methods: We examined current publications and focused on articles relating to anti-inflammatory and pro-resolution mechanisms in periodontal disease., Results: Recent research has examined the inflammatory and resolution cascade in greater detail while looking at endogenous and exogenous mediators that can be utilised to achieve therapeutic end-points. The possible introduction of 'resolution indices' for drug testing warrants a new look at pharmacologic agents that might have been overlooked for their beneficial effects in periodontal disease treatment., Conclusion: The emerging awareness of inflammation and its control in periodontal disease management underscores the importance of exploring inflammatory pathways and mediators, thus exploring new ways to control inflammation. This direction of research promises a new era in drug discovery and therapeutics for periodontal disease treatment.

Exposure to sublethal processing treatments can stimulate bacterial stress responses. The purpose of this research was to determine whether adaptation to common food processing stresses encountered during the preparation of ready-to-eat foods affects the dose of UV light required to significantly reduce Listeria monocytogenes populations in sterile distilled water and a 9% NaCl solution, using uridine as a chemical actinometer. L. monocytogenes strains N1-227 (from hot dog batter), N3-031 (from turkey franks), and R2-499 (from ready-to-eat meat) were acid stressed for 3 h at 35 degrees C in Trypticase soy broth with yeast extract acidified to pH 5.0, heat shocked for 1 h at 48 degrees C in brain heart infusion broth (BHIB), and selected for sulfanilamide resistance (512 microg/ml). These strains were then mixed in equal proportions and suspended in water and 9% NaCl solution, each containing 10(-4) M uridine. Samples were exposed to UV light (253.7 nm) for 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, or 30 min. Inactivation was evaluated by surface plating onto modified Oxford agar and Trypticase soy agar with yeast extract and by enrichment in BHIB followed by incubation at 37 degrees C for 24 h. The absorbance of each sample was measured before and after irradiation to calculate the dose of UV light. There were no significant differences between population estimates based on medium or suspension solution. There were no population differences between acid-stressed and antibiotic-resistant or unstressed and heat-shocked L. monocytogenes strains. However, acid-stressed and antibiotic-resistant strains were significantly more resistant to UV light than were unstressed and heat-shocked strains (P < or = 0.05).

Listeria monocytogenes is the pathogen of concern in ready-to-eat (RTE) meat products. Salt brines are used to chill processed meats. L. monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can grow under saline conditions, and may compete with each other for nutrients. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of lactic acid bacteria (Enterococcus faecalis, Carnobacterium gallinarum, and Lactobacillus plantarum) on the survival of L. monocytogenes and Listeria innocua in brines stored under low temperatures for 10 d. Sterile tap water (STW) and 2 brine solutions (7.9% and 13.2% NaCl) were inoculated with 1 of 5 cocktails (L. monocytogenes, L. innocua, LAB, L. monocytogenes+ LAB, or L. innocua+ LAB) at initial concentrations of 7 log CFU/mL. Brines were stored for 10 d at 4 or 12 degrees C. Three replications of each brine concentration/cocktail/temperature combination were completed. No significant reductions of L. monocytogenes occurred in 7.9%[w/v] or 13.2%[w/v] brines when LAB were present; however, there were significant reductions after 10 d of L. monocytogenes in the STW solution when LAB were present (1.43 log CFU/mL at 4 degrees C and 3.02 log CFU/mL at 12 degrees C). L. innocua was significantly less resilient to environmental stresses of the brines than L. monocytogenes, both with and without LAB present (P< or = 0.05). These strains of lactic acid bacteria are not effective at reducing L. monocytogenes in brines at low temperatures. Furthermore, use of L. innocua as a model for L. monocytogenes is not appropriate under these environmental conditions.

Background: In 2007, clients served by Blood Systems Laboratories used variable approaches for triggering West Nile virus (WNV) RNA individual-donation (ID) nucleic acid testing (NAT). These included two minipool (MP) NAT-reactive donations and a greater than 1:1000 rate in a 7-day interval (primary trigger), criteria based on one MP-NAT-reactive donation when there was WNV activity in overlapping and/or adjacent geographic areas (neighbor trigger), or zero MP-NAT-reactive donation (self-trigger)., Study Design and Methods: The Procleix WNV assay was used in either a 16-sample MP or an ID format. NAT-repeat reactivity or anti-immunoglobulin M (IgM) positivity defined true positives (TPs). TPs that were negative on 1:16 dilution testing were considered ID-NAT yield cases., Results: WNV NAT performed on 1,217,929 donations identified 162 TPs; 87 were detected by MP (rate of 0.008%) and 75 by ID (rate of 0.10%; p < 0.0001). There were 34 ID-NAT yield cases, including 4 IgM/immunoglobulin G (IgG)-negative and 9 IgM-positive/IgG-negative donations. Rates of yield cases by primary, neighbor, and self-triggering were 0.077, 0.052, and 0.004% (p = 0.0003). None of 11 ID-NAT yield cases detected by the neighbor trigger would have been detected if the primary trigger had been used., Conclusions: Primary triggering criteria identified 21 viremic donations that would have been missed by MP testing; however, 11 other low-level viremic donations required more stringent criteria (e.g., neighbor trigger) for detection. It is reasonable to adopt more stringent ID-NAT triggers, including elimination of the rate criterion and triggering on one NAT-reactive donation for regions adjacent to centers which have already triggered.

Tomatoes have been linked to outbreaks of salmonellosis, demonstrating the need to identify sources of contamination. Objectives of this study included determining the ability for Salmonella enterica serovar Montevideo to be internalized into tomatoes from contaminated irrigation water and seed stock, and establishing whether Salmonella Montevideo can survive in fertilizer solutions. Six treatment groups (five plants per group) were irrigated with 350 ml of 7 log CFU/ml of Salmonella Montevideo every 14 days for 70 days, each group receiving an increased number of contaminated water events progressively: group 1 received one contaminated watering at day 0, and group 6 received a total of six contaminated waterings. Group 7 was a control, and group 8 was grown from seeds soaked in 8 log CFU/ml of Salmonella Montevideo for 24 h. All plants were watered daily with uncontaminated water. Three replications were completed. Fruit from every plant, and roots, stems, and leaves of one plant per treatment were sampled. All tomatoes were negative for Salmonella Montevideo; five root samples tested positive. For fertilizer studies, a commercially available fertilizer, two custom mixed and 1.0% dilutions of each (total of six solutions), and sterile water were inoculated with 8 log CFU/ml of Salmonella Montevideo and stored at 25 degrees C. Solutions were sampled at 24, 48, and 72 h. There were no differences (P > or = 0.05) between survival of Salmonella Montevideo in diluted fertilizers and the control. Results indicate Salmonella Montevideo is unable to contaminate tomato fruit via irrigation water and seed stock but can survive in fertilizer solutions.

A randomized complete block design with three replications was utilized to determine the effects of ionizing irradiation and hydrostatic pressure on the inactivation of Escherichia coli O157:H7, volatile composition, and consumer acceptability (n=155) of frozen ground beef patties. E-beam and X-ray irradiation (2kGy) inactivated E. coli O157:H7 below the limit of detection, while hydrostatic pressure treatment (300mPa for 5min at 4°C) did not inactivate this pathogen. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used to extract volatile compounds from treated ground beef patties. Irradiation and hydrostatic pressure altered the volatile composition (P<0.05) of the ground beef patties in respect to radiolytic products. However, results were inconclusive on whether these differences were great enough to use this method to differentiate between irradiated and non-irradiated samples in a commercial setting. Irradiation did not affect (P>0.05) consumer acceptability of ground beef patties when compared to untreated samples, but hydrostatic pressure caused decreased acceptability (P<0.05) when compared to other treatments.

Female genital cutting (FGC) is widespread in Africa. Its short and long term medical consequences are widely reported. Here we report that FGC is associated with and may contribute to increases in the sex ratio at birth (Odds Ratio = 1.019; 95% C.I. = 1.007, 1.032) while mother's age at birth is inversely associated with probability of male birth (Odds Ratio = 0.998; 95% C.I. = 0.997, 0.999) in a generalized linear, logistic model with the probability of a male birth the dependent variable and eight potential explanatory variables applied to 413,384 births in 22 African countries. While these two associations are statistically significant, their odds ratios are close to 1.0 and they only slightly decrease the null deviance of the model. Therefore sex determination in these data is still a mostly stochastic process determined by the random variation in X or Y sperm production, transport, and conception.

Study Objective: Many emergency departments and trauma centers utilize extensive radiologic studies during the assessment of trauma patients. A point of concern arises about the possible biological effects of these cumulative radiation doses. The objective of this study is to determine the amount of ionizing radiation received by adult blunt trauma patients at a Level I trauma center during the first 24 hours of their care., Methods: This nonconcurrent case series reviewed the first 100 consecutive adult blunt trauma patients who presented to a Level I trauma center in 2006. All patients met hospital standards for the less acute major triage criteria. Individual radiation dose reports calculated by the computed tomography (CT) scanner were used to determine the radiation doses from each CT procedure. Standardized tables were used to determine radiation dose for plain radiographs. The median effective dose of radiation (millisieverts) was calculated for the first 24 hours of hospitalization., Results: A total of 100 eligible patients presented between January 1, 2006, and March 20, 2006. Eighty-six patients had complete radiologic records available. The median age was 32 years, with an intraquartile range of 23 to 46 years; the median Injury Severity Score was 14, with an intraquartile range of 9 to 29; and the median number of CT scans was 3, with an intraquartile range of 3 to 4. The median effective total dose of ionized radiation was 40.2 mSv, with an intraquartile range of 30.5 to 47.2 mSv. A dose of 40.2 mSv is the equivalent of approximately 1,005 chest radiographs., Conclusion: Trauma patients meeting the less acute major triage criteria are exposed to clinically important radiation doses from diagnostic radiographic imaging during the first 24 hours of their care.

Throughout the 20th century, an understanding of the role of causative bacteria and the susceptible host in the initiation and progression of periodontal disease(s) has emerged from the research efforts of scientists and clinicians worldwide. Over time, specific bacterial types, such as Porphyromonas gingivalis, were discovered and shown to be important in the cause of periodontal disease. At the same time, inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and interleukins, and enzymes, such as matrix metalloproteinases, were discovered and found to be important participants in the destruction of periodontal tissues. Acquired and inherited environmental risk factors began to emerge that could explain, in part, the susceptibility of individuals to periodontal disease. The discovery of antibiotics, beginning with sulfanilamide, penicillin, and streptomycin, led to additional strategies for managing periodontal disease. With the discovery of the mechanism of action of aspirin, scientists began to develop new strategies for treating diseases that focused on controlling inflammation. Thus, host-modulating therapies emerged for the management of periodontal disease through the control of inflammation. At the end of the 20th century, an old concept in medicine and dentistry reappeared: that the infection and inflammation of periodontal disease in the mouth could reach distant sites via the bloodstream. Apparently oral disease could, in fact, contribute to systemic diseases, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and adverse outcomes in pregnancy. This concept of the oral health-general health connection is now supported by sound and rational evidence-based observations. Clearly, the 21st century has arrived with a new understanding of the nature of periodontal diseases based on a notable era of discovery. There is a promising future for preventing and treating this common and troubling condition that affects not just the mouth but also the whole body.

Until the 1970s, treatment strategies for periodontal diseases were primarily based on the understanding that plaque bacteria and their products mediated the tissue destruction in periodontal patients. This concept began to change, however, when investigators reported that host responses to the causative bacteria were a major contributor to disease pathogenesis. With a new understanding of host response and periodontal disease pathogenesis, it became apparent that inhibition of certain host response pathways might be an additional strategy, in addition to suppressing the causative bacteria, for treating periodontal diseases. The current understanding of periodontal disease etiology and pathogenesis emphasizes the role of the host in tissue destruction (Figure1).

The effect of high pressure processing in conjunction with the chemical antimicrobials, dimethyl dicarbonate (DMDC), hydrogen peroxide, cinnamic acid, potassium sorbate, and sodium benzoate (NaB) on E. coli O157:H7 strain E009 and Salmonella enterica serovar Agona was investigated in apple juice and orange juice, respectively. Juices were inoculated with approximately 10(6) CFU/ml and subjected to pressures of 550 MPa (E. coli O157:H7 samples) and 400 MPa (Salmonella Agona samples) for 2 min at 6 degrees C (initial temperature). Populations of each pathogen were determined before pressurization, immediately after pressurization, and after samples had been held after treatment for 24 h at 4 degrees C. The most effective treatment for E. coli O157:H7, as determined by plating immediately after pressurization, was 125 ppm of DMDC, which caused a >4.98-log reduction. Other treatments that were significantly different from the sample with no added antimicrobial were 62.5 ppm of DMDC, 300 ppm of hydrogen peroxide, and 500 ppm of NaB, which produced 4.97-, 5.79-, and 3.91-log total reductions, respectively. After 24 h at 4 degrees C, E. coli O157:H7 was undetectable in all treatment groups (and controls). In samples inoculated with Salmonella, the most effective treatment was 62.5 ppm of DMDC, which produced a 5.96-log decrease immediately after pressure treatment. The results for 1,000 ppm of NaB, which produced a 3.26-log decrease, also were significantly different from those for the sample containing no antimicrobials. After 24 h at 4 degrees C, all samples with added antimicrobials had near or more than a 5-log total reduction of Salmonella Agona.

Ready-to-eat meat products have been implicated in several foodborne listeriosis outbreaks. Microbial contamination of these products can occur after thermal processing when products are chilled in salt brines. The objective of this study was to evaluate UV radiation on the inactivation of Listeria monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria in a model brine chiller system. Two concentrations of brine (7.9% [wt/wt] or 13.2% [wt/wt]) were inoculated with a approximately 6.0 log CFU/ml cocktail of L. monocytogenes or lactic acid bacteria and passed through a UV treatment system for 60 min. Three replications of each bacteria-and-brine combination were performed and resulted in at least a 4.5-log reduction in microbial numbers in all treated brines after exposure to UV light. Bacterial populations were significantly reduced after 5 min of exposure to UV light in the model brine chiller compared with the control, which received no UV light exposure (P < 0.05). The maximum rate of inactivation for both microorganisms in treated brines occurred between minutes 1 and 15 of UV exposure. Results indicate that in-line treatment of chill brines with UV light reduces the number of L. monocytogenes and lactic acid bacteria.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia is a rare acquired metabolic disorder characterized by hypophosphatemia and inappropriately low serum levels of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. Symptoms include chronic muscle and bone pain, weakness, and fatigue in association with a high risk of fragility fractures due to osteomalacia. The diagnosis is commonly delayed for years due to the nonspecific nature of the presenting symptoms, failure to include determination of serum phosphorus levels in blood chemistry testing, and difficulty in identifying the responsible tumor. The pathogenesis of tumor-induced osteomalacia involves tumor expression of fibroblast growth factor 23, a hormone that inhibits proximal renal tubular reabsorption of phosphate and down-regulates renal conversion of 25-hydroxyvitamin D to its active form, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D. The metabolic abnormalities may be partially or completely corrected with phosphate supplementation and calcitriol. A definitive diagnosis and treatment require excision of the responsible tumor.

Synovial tissues from 5 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were examined immunofluorescence microscopy for the presence of lymphocytes with either bone marrow-derived (B) or thymus-derived (T) surface markers. Five synovial tissues with severe to mild lymphocytic infiltrations by bright field microscopy were examined in parallel with immunofluorescence. B cells were identified with a pepsin-digested fluoresceinated anti-F (ab')2 antiserum and T cells were detected with a specific rabbit and anti-T lymphocyte antiserum. By these techniques 75-90% of the lymphocytes in these frozen sections were identified as T cells. Cell suspensions were also prepared by collagenase digestion of two of the five synovial tissues. The lymphocytes in these cell suspensions were predominantly T lymphocytes (78-85%) as shown by their ability to form spontaneous rosettes with sheep erythrocytes (E rosettes).

It is not my intent to critique individual contributions in this special issue but to assess scholarly progress since the last special issue devoted to sexual orientation in Developmental Psychology (Patterson, 1995). Because not all steps forward can be catalogued in this limited forum, I focus on several long-standing challenges faced by developmental scientists as they investigate same-sex sexuality: recruitment and definition of same-sex populations, developmental diversity of same-sex oriented individuals, and "clinical traps" created by early research on same-sex populations., (Copyright (c) 2008 APA.)

Background: A molecular epidemiologic study provided the opportunity to characterize the biology of the biofilm-gingival interface (BGI) in 6,768 community-dwelling subjects., Methods: Disease classifications and multivariable models were developed using clinical, microbial, inflammatory, and host-response data. The purpose was to identify new clinical categories that represented distinct biologic phenotypes based upon DNA checkerboard analyses of eight plaque bacteria, serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers to 17 bacteria, and the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) levels of 16 inflammatory mediators. Five BGI clinical conditions were defined using probing depths (PDs) and bleeding on probing (BOP) scores. Subjects with all PDs < or = 3 mm were grouped as BGI-healthy (14.3% of sample) or BGI-gingivitis (BGI-G, 15.1%). Subjects with one or more PDs > or = 4 mm [deep lesion (DL)] were divided into low BOP (18.0%), moderate BOP (BGI-DL/MB, 39.7%), and severe BOP (BGI-DL/SB, 12.9%)., Results: Subjects with BGI-G had increased levels of Campylobacter rectus-specific serum IgG levels (P = 0.01), and those with BGI-DL/SB had increased IgG levels to Porphyromonas gingivalis (P < 0.0003) and C. rectus (P < 0.01). BGI-DL/SB subjects had an excessive GCF interleukin (IL)-1beta and prostaglandin E2 response and an enhanced chronic inflammatory response with significant increases in GCF IL-6 and monocyte chemotactic peptide-1. Within BGI-DL/SB subjects, more severe pocketing and BOP were associated with higher levels of GCF IL-1beta, not higher microbial counts or plaque scores., Conclusions: New BGI classifications create categories with distinct biologic phenotypes. The increased titers of C. rectus IgG among 68.5% of the BGI-G subjects and elevated P. gingivalis titers among BGI-DL/MB and BGI-DL/SB subjects (63.8% and 75.7%, respectively) are strongly supportive of the microbial specificity of pathogenesis for BGI categories.

The effect of high pressure on the log reduction of six strains of Escherichia coli O157:H7 and five serovars of Salmonella enterica was investigated in tryptic soy broth, sterile distilled water, and commercially sterile orange juice (for Salmonella) and apple cider (for E. coli). Samples were subjected to high-pressure processing treatment at 300 and 550 MPa for 2 min at 6 degrees C. Samples were plated onto tryptic soy agar directly after pressurization and after being held for 24 h at 4 degrees C. At 300 MPa, little effect was seen on E. coli O157:H7 strains, while Salmonella serovars varied in resistance, showing reductions between 0.26 and 3.95 log CFU/ml. At 550 MPa, E. coli O157:H7 strains exhibited a range of reductions (0.28 to 4.39 log CFU/ml), while most Salmonella populations decreased beyond the detection limit (> 5-log CFU/ml reduction). The most resistant strains tested were E. coli E009 and Salmonella Agona. Generally, bacterial populations in fruit juices showed larger decreases than did populations in tryptic soy broth and distilled water. E. coli O157:H7 cultures held for 24 h at 4 degrees C after treatment at 550 MPa showed a significant log decrease as compared with cultures directly after treatment (P < or = 0.05), while Salmonella serovars did not show this significant decrease (P > 0.05). All Salmonella serovars tested in orange juice treated at 550 MPa for 2 min at 6 degrees C and held for 24 h showed a > 5-log decrease, while E. coli O157:H7 strains require a higher pressure, higher temperature, longer pressurization, or a chemical additive to achieve a 5-log decrease.

Curli fibers are produced by some Escherichia coli cells in response to environmental stimuli. These extracellular proteins enhance the cell's ability to form biofilms on various abiotic surfaces. E. coli 0157:H7 cells readily attach to a variety of fruit and vegetable surfaces. It is not known whether the expression of curli influences the cell's ability to attach to produce surfaces. In this study, the effect of curli expression on the cell's overall hydrophobicity, charge, and ability to attach to cut and whole iceberg lettuce surfaces was examined. All strains, regardless of curli expression, attached preferentially to the cut edges of lettuce (P < 0.05). The curli-producing cells of E. coli 0157:H7 strain E0018 attached in significantly greater numbers to both cut and whole lettuce pieces than did the non-curli-producing E0018 cells (P < 0.05); however, no significant attachment differences were observed between the curli-producing and non-curli-producing cells of E. coli 0157:H7 strains 43894 and 43895. All curli-producing E. coli 0157:H7 strains were significantly more hydrophobic (P < 0.01); however, no association between the cells' hydrophobic characteristics and lettuce attachment was observed. Overall surface charge of the cells did not differ among strains or curli phenotypes. Results indicate that overall hydrophobicity and cell charge in E. coli 0157:H7 strains do not influence attachment to iceberg lettuce surfaces. The presence of curli may not have any influence on attachment of E. coli 0157:H7 cells to produce items. Additional factorsmay influence the attachment of E. coli 0157:H7 to plant surfaces and should be further examined.

Analyses of three waves (6 years) of the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health data explored the prevalence and stability of sexual orientation and whether these two parameters varied by biologic sex, sexual orientation component (romantic attraction, sexual behavior, sexual identity), and degree of component. Prevalence rates for nonheterosexuality varied between 1 and 15% and depended on biologic sex (higher among females), sexual orientation component (highest for romantic attraction), degree of component (highest if "mostly heterosexual" was included with identity), and the interaction of these (highest for nonheterosexual identity among females). Although kappa statistics testing for temporal stability across waves were significant, they failed to reach acceptable levels of agreement and could be largely attributable to the stability of opposite-sex rather than same-sex attraction and behavior. Migration over time among sexual orientation components was in both directions, from opposite-sex attraction and behavior to same-sex attraction and behavior and vice versa. To assess sexual orientation, investigators should measure multiple components over time or abandon the general notion of sexual orientation and measure only those components relevant for the research question.
