Objective: Recently we reported that glucosamine sulphate (GS) did not have an effect on the symptoms and progression of primary care patients with hip osteoarthritis (OA). The aim of this present study was to investigate whether there are subgroups of patients with hip OA for whom GS might be an effective therapy., Method: We randomized 222 patients with hip OA that met one of the American College of Rheumatology criteria to either 1500 mg of oral GS or placebo once daily for 2 years. Subgroup analyses were predefined for radiographic severity (Kellgren & Lawrence (KL)=1 vs >or=2) and for type of OA (localised vs generalised). Additional exploratory subgroup analyses focused on groups based on pain level, pain medication use, baseline joint space width (JSW), and concomitant knee OA at baseline. Primary outcome measures were Western Ontario MacMaster Universities (WOMAC) pain and function scores over 24 months, and joint space narrowing (JSN) after 24 months., Results: In the predefined subgroups based on radiographic severity and type of OA, the outcomes WOMAC pain, function and JSN were similar for the GS and placebo group., Conclusion: GS was not significantly better than placebo in reducing symptoms and progression of hip OA in subgroups of patients.

Monodus subterraneus is a microalga, which is known for its high eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5omega3) content. To produce EPA commercially, high volumetric productivities of microalgae are required. These high productivities can be reached in flat panel photobioreactors with small optical paths that have to be operated at high cell densities (>10 g/L). However, at these cell densities a reduction of productivity is observed. This growth inhibition is probably caused by growth inhibitors released by the microalgae, which have been suggested to be fatty acids. Our aim was to investigate if free fatty acids produced by M. subterraneus inhibited growth of this species. Therefore a bioassay was developed and saturated, unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fatty acids occurring in Monodus were tested on their growth inhibiting properties. Growth of M. subterraneus was completely inhibited at a saturated concentration (96 microM) of palmitoleic acid (16:1omega7). But, the saturated fatty acid palmitic acid (16:0) and the mono-saturated oleic acid (18:1omega9) were much stronger inhibitors. Growth was inhibited for 50% already at concentrations of 0.4 microM 16:0 and 3 microM 18:1omega9, respectively. These fatty acids probably cause the growth inhibition in high cell density cultures of M. subterraneus.

Tetrahedral [Pt(PF(3))(4)] reacts with H(+) to form trigonal bipyramidal [Pt(PF(3))(4)H](+). This in turn looses PF(3) to form square-planar [Pt(PF(3))(3)H](+). The complex [Pt(PF(3))(4)] can be oxidized with AsF(5) to form the square-planar complex, [Pt(PF(3))(4)](2+), which can be more conveniently obtained from PtF(4) and PF(3) in HF/SbF(5) solution. [Pt(PF(3))(4)](2+) reacts with F(-) in HF under cluster formation to [Pt(4)(PF(3))(8)H](+).

Reactions of iridium(fluoroalkyl)hydride complexes CpIr(PMe(3))(CF(2)R(F))Y (R(F) = F, CF(3); Y = H, D) with LutHX (Lut = 2,6-dimethylpyridine; X = Cl, I) results in C-F activation coupled with hydride migration to give CpIr(PMe(3))(CYFR(F))X as variable mixtures of diastereomers. Solution conformations and relative diastereomer configurations of the products have been determined by (19)F{(1)H}HOESY NMR to be (S(C), S(Ir))(R(C), R(Ir)) for the kinetic diastereomer and (R(C), S(Ir))(S(C), R(Ir)) for its thermodynamic counterpart. Isotope labeling experiments using LutDCl/CpIr(PMe(3))(CF(2)R(F))H and CpIr(PMe(3))(CF(2)R(F))D/LutHCl) showed that, unlike a previously studied system, H/D exchange is faster than protonation of the alpha-CF bond, giving an identical mixture of product isotopologues from both reaction mixtures. The kinetic rate law shows a first-order dependence on the concentration of iridium substrate, but a half-order dependence on that of LutHCl; this is interpreted to mean that LutHCl dissociates to give HCl as the active protic source for C-F bond activation. Detailed kinetic studies are reported, which demonstrate that lack of complete diastereoselectivity is not a function of the C-F bond activation/H migration steps but that a cationic intermediate plays a double role in loss of diastereoselectivity; the intermediate can undergo epimerization at iridium before being trapped by halide and can also catalyze the epimerization of kinetic diastereomer product to thermodynamic product. A detailed mechanism is proposed and simulations performed to fit the kinetic data.

Background: The aim of this study was to examine the associations between urinary levels of the stress hormones adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol during treatment with self reported stress, in order to investigate the mechanism for the previously observed negative association of anxiety and depression with the outcome of IVF/ICSI., Methods: In a multicentre prospective cohort study, women entering their first cycle of IVF/ICSI treatment were asked to participate. From each participant nocturnal urine samples were collected; pre-treatment, before oocyte retrieval and before embryo-transfer (ET), to assess hormonal concentrations. Additionally, two questionnaires were administered before the start of the treatment to measure anxiety and depression., Results: 168 women completed the questionnaires and collected at least two urine specimens. A significant positive correlation between urinary adrenaline concentrations at baseline and ET and the scores on depression at baseline were found. In women with successful treatment, lower concentrations of adrenaline at oocyte retrieval and lower concentrations of adrenaline and noradrenaline at ET, compared with unsuccessful women, were found., Conclusions: The significant positive association of adrenaline concentration with pregnancy and with depression suggested that this adrenal hormone could be one of the links in the complex relationship between psychosocial stress and outcome after IVF/ICSI.

Reaction of 1,1-difluoroallene and tetrafluoroallene with a series of transition metal complex fragments yields the mononuclear allene complexes [CpMn(CO)(2)(allene)] (1), [(CO)(4)Fe(allene)] (2), [(Ph(3)P)(2)Pt(C(3)H(2)F(2))] (4), [Ir(PPh(3))(2)(C(3)H(2)F(2))(2)Cl] (5), and the dinuclear complexes [mu-eta(1)-eta(3)-C(3)H(2)F(2))Fe(2)(CO)(7)] (3), [Ir(PPh(3))(C(3)H(2)F(2))(2)Cl](2) (6), and [mu-eta(2)-eta(2)-C(3)H(2)F(2))(CpMo(CO)(2))(2)] (9), respectively. In attempts to synthesize cationic complexes of fluorinated allenes [CpFe(CO)(2)(C(CF(3))=CH(2))] (7a), [CpFe(CO)(2)(C(CF(3))=CF(2))] (7b) and [mu-I-(CpFe(CO)(2))(2)][B(C(6)H(3)-3,5-(CF(3))(2))(4)] were isolated. The spectroscopic and structural data of these complexes revealed that the 1,1-difluoroallene ligand is coordinated exclusively with the double bond containing the hydrogen-substituted carbon atom. 1,1-Difluoroallene and tetrafluoroallene proved to be powerful pi acceptor ligands.

The belief that supernatural forces influence man's fate appears to be increasing. Many people are convinced that unknown forces can cause injuries. From a multitude of proposed possibilities, we selected two factors that are claimed to affect the incidence of accidents. The first theory holds that more accidents occur at the time of full moon. The second theory concerns the three so-called biorhythms with their supposedly critical days (physical, emotional, intellectual). The effect of the lunar phase and the three biorhythms on accidents was determined from the dates of accident and birth of trauma patients admitted to the University Hospital in Groningen. We analysed data on all 29085 patients who were seen at the outpatient department in the years 1981-1983 and on 930 severely injury patients admitted in the years 1985-1989. At full moon even slightly fewer patients than expected (24 percent vs 25 percent) were seen at the emergency department. The number of severely injured patients was the same during the four moon phases. The 'critical' biorhythm days were not associated with increased number of accidents, neither for the patients seen at the emergency department, nor for the severely injured patients.
