Search

About one out of 200 Sun-like stars has a planet with an orbital period shorter than one day: an ultra-short-period planet (Sanchis-ojeda et al. 2014; Winn et al. 2018). All of the previously known ultra-short-period planets are either hot Jupiters, with sizes above 10 Earth radii (Re), or apparently rocky planets smaller than 2 Re. Such lack of planets of intermediate size (the "hot Neptune desert") has been interpreted as the inability of low-mass planets to retain any hydrogen/helium (H/He) envelope in the face of strong stellar irradiation. Here, we report the discovery of an ultra-short-period planet with a radius of 4.6 Re and a mass of 29 Me, firmly in the hot Neptune desert. Data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (Ricker et al. 2015) revealed transits of the bright Sun-like star \starname\, every 0.79 days. The planet's mean density is similar to that of Neptune, and according to thermal evolution models, it has a H/He-rich envelope constituting 9.0^(+2.7)_(-2.9)% of the total mass. With an equilibrium temperature around 2000 K, it is unclear how this "ultra-hot Neptune" managed to retain such an envelope. We report the discovery of the transiting exoplanet NGTS-12b by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). The host star, NGTS-12, is a V=12.38 mag star with an effective temperature of T$_{\rm eff}$=$5690\pm130$ K. NGTS-12b orbits with a period of $P=7.53$d, making it the longest period planet discovered to date by the main NGTS survey. We verify the NGTS transit signal with data extracted from the TESS full-frame images, and combining the photometry with radial velocity measurements from HARPS and FEROS we determine NGTS-12b to have a mass of $0.208\pm0.022$ M$_{J}$ and a radius of $1.048\pm0.032$ R$_{J}$. NGTS-12b sits on the edge of the Neptunian desert when we take the stellar properties into account, highlighting the importance of considering both the planet and star when studying the desert. The long period of NGTS-12b combined with its low density of just $0.223\pm0.029$ g cm$^{-3}$ make it an attractive target for atmospheric characterization through transmission spectroscopy with a Transmission Spectroscopy Metric of 89.4., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 11 pages

Extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray emissions from stellar coronae drive mass loss from exoplanet atmospheres, and ultraviolet emission from stellar chromospheres drives photo-chemistry in exoplanet atmospheres. Comparisons of the spectral energy distributions of host stars are, therefore, essential for understanding the evolution and habitability of exoplanets. The large number of stars observed with the MUSCLES, Mega-MUSCLES, and other recent HST observing programs has provided for the first time a large sample (79 stars) of reconstructed Lyman-alpha fluxes that we compare with X-ray fluxes to identify significant patterns in the relative emission from these two atmospheric regions as a function of stellar age and effective temperature. We find that as stars age on the main sequence, the emissions from their chromospheres and coronae follow a pattern in response to the amount of magnetic heating in these atmospheric layers. A single trendline slope describes the pattern of X-ray vs. Lyman-alpha emission for G and K dwarfs, but the different trendlines for M dwarf stars show that the Lyman-alpha fluxes of M stars are significantly smaller than warmer stars with the same X-ray flux. The X-ray and Lyman-alpha luminosities divided by the stellar bolometric luminosities show different patterns depending on stellar age. The L(Lyman-alpha)/L(bol) ratios increase smoothly to cooler stars of all ages, but the L(X)/L(bol) ratios show different trends. For older stars, the increase in coronal emission with decreasing T(eff) is much steeper than chromospheric emission. We present the discovery of NGTS J0930-18, an extreme mass ratio eclipsing M-dwarf binary system with an early M-dwarf primary and a late M-dwarf secondary close to the hydrogen burning limit. Global modelling of photometry and radial velocities reveals that the secondary component (NGTS J0930-18 B) has a mass of M=$0.0818 ^{+0.0040}_{-0.0015}$ $M_*$ and radius of R=$0.1059 ^{+0.0023}_{-0.0021}$ $R_*$, making it one of the lowest mass stars with direct mass and radius measurements. With a mass ratio of q =$0.1407 ^{+0.0065}_{-0.017}$, NGTS J0930-18 has the lowest mass ratio of any known eclipsing M-dwarf binary system, posing interesting questions for binary star formation and evolution models. The mass and radius of NGTS J0930-18 B is broadly consistent with stellar evolutionary models. NGTS J0930-18 B lies in the sparsely populated mass radius parameter space close to the substellar boundary. We present the optical transmission spectrum of the highly inflated Saturn-mass exoplanet WASP-21b, using three transits obtained with the ACAM instrument on the William Herschel Telescope through the LRG-BEASTS survey (Low Resolution Ground-Based Exoplanet Atmosphere Survey using Transmission Spectroscopy). Our transmission spectrum covers a wavelength range of 4635-9000 Angstrom, achieving an average transit depth precision of 197ppm compared to one atmospheric scale height at 246ppm. We detect Na I absorption in a bin width of 30 Angstrom, at >4$\sigma$ confidence, which extends over 100 Angstrom. We see no evidence of absorption from K I. Atmospheric retrieval analysis of the scattering slope indicates it is too steep for Rayleigh scattering from H$_2$, but is very similar to that of HD 189733b. The features observed in our transmission spectrum cannot be caused by stellar activity alone, with photometric monitoring of WASP-21 showing it to be an inactive star. We therefore conclude that aerosols in the atmosphere of WASP-21b are giving rise to the steep slope that we observe, and that WASP-21b is an excellent target for infra-red observations to constrain its atmospheric metallicity., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 21 pages, 10 tables, 16 figures

Exoplanet atmospheres are known to be vulnerable to mass loss through irradiation by stellar X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet emission. We investigate how this high-energy irradiation varies with time by combining an empirical relation describing stellar X-ray emission with a second relation describing the ratio of Solar X-ray to extreme-ultraviolet emission. In contrast to assumptions commonly made when modelling atmospheric escape, we find that the decline in stellar extreme-ultraviolet emission is much slower than in X-rays, and that the total extreme-ultraviolet irradiation of planetary atmospheres is dominated by emission after the saturated phase of high energy emission (which lasts around 100 Myr after the formation of the star). The extreme-ultraviolet spectrum also becomes much softer during this slow decline. Furthermore, we find that the total combined X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet emission of stars also occurs mostly after this saturated phase. Our results suggest that models of atmospheric escape that focus on the saturated phase of high-energy emission are over-simplified, and when considering the evolution of planetary atmospheres it is necessary to follow EUV-driven escape on Gyr timescales. We present the detection of high energy white-light flares from pre-main sequence stars associated with the Orion complex, observed as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). With energies up to $5.2\times10^{35}$ erg these flares are some of the most energetic white-light flare events seen to date. We have used the NGTS observations of flaring and non-flaring stars to measure the average flare occurrence rate for 4 Myr M0-M3 stars. We have also combined our results with those from previous studies to predict average rates for flares above $1\times10^{35}$ ergs for early M stars in nearby young associations., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. We present the discovery and characterization of WASP-148, a new extrasolar system that includes at least two giant planets. The host star is a slowly rotating inactive late-G dwarf with a V=12 magnitude. The planet WASP-148b is a hot Jupiter of 0.72 R_Jup and 0.29 M_Jup that transits its host with an orbital period of 8.80 days. We found the planetary candidate with the SuperWASP photometric survey, then characterized it with the SOPHIE spectrograph. Our radial velocity measurements subsequently revealed a second planet in the system, WASP-148c, with an orbital period of 34.5 days and a minimum mass of 0.40 M_Jup. No transits of this outer planet were detected. The orbits of both planets are eccentric and fall near the 4:1 mean-motion resonances. This configuration is stable on long timescales, but induces dynamical interactions so that the orbits differ slightly from purely Keplerian orbits. In particular, WASP-148b shows transit-timing variations of typically 15 minutes, making it the first interacting system with transit-timing variations that is detected on ground-based light curves. We establish that the mutual inclination of the orbital plane of the two planets cannot be higher than 35 degrees, and the true mass of WASP-148c is below 0.60 M_Jup. We present photometric and spectroscopic observations of this system that cover a time span of ten years. We report the discovery of NGTS-11 b (=TOI-1847 b), a transiting Saturn in a 35.46-day orbit around a mid K-type star (Teff=5050 K). We initially identified the system from a single-transit event in a TESS full-frame image light-curve. Following seventy-nine nights of photometric monitoring with an NGTS telescope, we observed a second full transit of NGTS-11 b approximately one year after the TESS single-transit event. The NGTS transit confirmed the parameters of the transit signal and restricted the orbital period to a set of 13 discrete periods. We combined our transit detections with precise radial velocity measurements to determine the true orbital period and measure the mass of the planet. We find NGTS-11 b has a radius of 0.817+0.028-0.032 $R_J$, a mass of 0.344+0.092-0.073 $M_J$, and an equilibrium temperature of just 435+34-32 K, making it one of the coolest known transiting gas giants. NGTS-11 b is the first exoplanet to be discovered after being initially identified as a TESS single-transit event, and its discovery highlights the power of intense photometric monitoring in recovering longer-period transiting exoplanets from single-transit events., Comment: 8 pages, 3 Figures, 1 table. We observed a transit of WASP-166 b using nine NGTS telescopes simultaneously with TESS observations of the same transit. We achieved a photometric precision of 152 ppm per 30 minutes with the nine NGTS telescopes combined, matching the precision reached by TESS for the transit event around this bright (T=8.87) star. The individual NGTS light curve noise is found to be dominated by scintillation noise and appears free from any time-correlated noise or any correlation between telescope systems. We fit the NGTS data for $T_C$ and $R_p/R_*$. We find $T_C$ to be consistent to within 0.25$\sigma$ of the result from the TESS data, and the difference between the TESS and NGTS measured $R_p/R_*$ values is 0.9$\sigma$. This experiment shows that multi-telescope NGTS photometry can match the precision of TESS for bright stars, and will be a valuable tool in refining the radii and ephemerides for bright TESS candidates and planets. We report the discovery of two transiting exoplanets from the WASP survey, WASP-150b and WASP-176b. WASP-150b is an eccentric ($e$ = 0.38) hot Jupiter on a 5.6 day orbit around a $V$ = 12.03, F8 main-sequence host. The host star has a mass and radius of 1.4 $\rm M_{\odot}$ and 1.7 $\rm R_{\odot}$ respectively. WASP-150b has a mass and radius of 8.5 $\rm M_J$ and 1.1 $\rm R_J$, leading to a large planetary bulk density of 6.4 $\rm \rho_J$. WASP-150b is found to be $\sim3$ Gyr old, well below its circularisation timescale, supporting the eccentric nature of the planet. WASP-176b is a hot Jupiter planet on a 3.9 day orbit around a $V$ = 12.01, F9 sub-giant host. The host star has a mass and radius of 1.3 $\rm M_{\odot}$ and 1.9 $\rm R_{\odot}$. WASP-176b has a mass and radius of 0.86 $\rm M_J$ and 1.5 $\rm R_J$ respectively, leading to a planetary bulk density of 0.23 $\rm \rho_J$., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. We present the discovery of NGTS J214358.5-380102, an eccentric M-dwarf binary discovered by the Next Generation Transit Survey. The system period of 7.618 days is greater than many known eclipsing M-dwarf binary systems. Its orbital eccentricity of $0.323^{+0.0014}_{-0.0037}$, is large relative to the period and semi-major axis of the binary. Global modelling of photometry and radial velocities indicate stellar masses of $M_A$=$0.426 ^{+0.0056}_{-0.0049}$, $M_B$=$0.455 ^{+0.0058}_{-0.0052}$ and stellar radii $R_A$=$0.461 ^{+0.038}_{-0.025}$ $R_B$=$0.411 ^{+0.027}_{-0.039}$, respectively. Comparisons with stellar models for low mass stars show that one star is consistent with model predictions whereas the other is substantially oversized. Spectral analysis of the system suggests a primary of spectral type M3V, consistent with both modelled masses and radii, and with SED fitting of NGTS photometry. As the most eccentric eclipsing M-dwarf binary known, NGTS J214358.5-380102 provides an interesting insight into the strength of tidal effects in the circularisation of stellar orbits., Comment: Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

The interiors of giant planets remain poorly understood. Even for the planets in the Solar System, difficulties in observation lead to large uncertainties in the properties of planetary cores. Exoplanets that have undergone rare evolutionary processes provide a route to understanding planetary interiors. Planets found in and near the typically barren hot-Neptune 'desert' (a region in mass-radius space that contains few planets) have proved to be particularly valuable in this regard. These planets include HD149026b, which is thought to have an unusually massive core, and recent discoveries such as LTT9779b and NGTS-4b, on which photoevaporation has removed a substantial part of their outer atmospheres. Here we report observations of the planet TOI-849b, which has a radius smaller than Neptune's but an anomalously large mass of $39.1^{+2.7}_{-2.6}$ Earth masses and a density of $5.2^{+0.7}_{-0.8}$ grams per cubic centimetre, similar to Earth's. Interior structure models suggest that any gaseous envelope of pure hydrogen and helium consists of no more than $3.9^{+0.8}_{-0.9}$ per cent of the total planetary mass. The planet could have been a gas giant before undergoing extreme mass loss via thermal self-disruption or giant planet collisions, or it could have avoided substantial gas accretion, perhaps through gap opening or late formation. Although photoevaporation rates cannot account for the mass loss required to reduce a Jupiter-like gas giant, they can remove a small (a few Earth masses) hydrogen and helium envelope on timescales of several billion years, implying that any remaining atmosphere on TOI-849b is likely to be enriched by water or other volatiles from the planetary interior. We report the confirmation and mass determination of three hot Jupiters discovered by the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission: HIP 65Ab (TOI-129, TIC-201248411) is an ultra-short-period Jupiter orbiting a bright (V=11.1 mag) K4-dwarf every 0.98 days. It is a massive 3.213 +/- 0.078 Mjup planet in a grazing transit configuration with an impact parameter of b = 1.17 +0.10/-0.08. As a result the radius is poorly constrained, 2.03 +0.61/-0.49 Rjup. The planet's distance to its host star is less than twice the separation at which it would be destroyed by Roche lobe overflow. It is expected to spiral into HIP 65A on a timescale ranging from 80 Myr to a few gigayears, assuming a reduced tidal dissipation quality factor of Qs' = 10^7 - 10^9. We performed a full phase-curve analysis of the TESS data and detected both illumination- and ellipsoidal variations as well as Doppler boosting. HIP 65A is part of a binary stellar system, with HIP 65B separated by 269 AU (3.95 arcsec on sky). TOI-157b (TIC 140691463) is a typical hot Jupiter with a mass of 1.18 +/- 0.13 Mjup and a radius of 1.29 +/- 0.02 Rjup. It has a period of 2.08 days, which corresponds to a separation of just 0.03 AU. This makes TOI-157 an interesting system, as the host star is an evolved G9 sub-giant star (V=12.7). TOI-169b (TIC 183120439) is a bloated Jupiter orbiting a V=12.4 G-type star. It has a mass of 0.79 +/- 0.06 Mjup and a radius of 1.09 +0.08/-0.05 Rjup. Despite having the longest orbital period (P = 2.26 days) of the three planets, TOI-169b receives the most irradiation and is situated on the edge of the Neptune desert. The two-fluid (ions and electrons) plasma Richtmyer-Meshkov instability of a cylindrical light/heavy density interface is numerically investigated without an initial magnetic field. Varying the Debye length scale, we examine the effects of the coupling between the electron and ion fluids. When the coupling becomes strong, the electrons are restricted to co-move with the ions and the resulting evolution is similar to the hydrodynamic neutral fluid case. The charge separation that occurs between the electrons and ions results in self-generated electromagnetic fields. We show that the Biermann battery effect dominates the generation of magnetic field when the coupling between the electrons and ions is weak. In addition to the Rayleigh-Tayler stabilization effect during flow deceleration, the interfaces are accelerated by the induced spatio-temporally varying Lorentz force. As a consequence, the perturbations develop into the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, leading to an enhancement of the perturbation amplitude compared with the hydrodynamic case., Comment: 32 pages, 15 figures

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has produced a large number of single transit event candidates which are being monitored by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). We observed a second epoch for the TIC-231005575 system (Tmag = 12.06, Teff = 5500 +- 85 K) with NGTS and a third epoch with Las Cumbres Observatory's (LCO) telescope in South Africa to constrain the orbital period (P = 61.777 d). Subsequent radial velocity measurements with CORALIE revealed the transiting object has a mass of M2 = 0.128 +- 0.003 M$_\odot$, indicating the system is a G-M binary. The radius of the secondary is R2 = 0.154 +- 0.008 R$_\odot$ and is consistent with models of stellar evolution to better than 1-$\sigma$., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. The Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS) is a photometric survey for transiting exoplanets, consisting of twelve identical 0.2-m telescopes. We report a measurement of the transit of HD106315c using a novel observing mode in which multiple NGTS telescopes observed the same target with the aim of increasing the signal-to-noise. Combining the data allows the robust detection of the transit, which has a depth less than 0.1 per cent, rivalling the performance of much larger telescopes. We demonstrate the capability of NGTS to contribute to the follow-up of K2 and TESS discoveries using this observing mode. In particular, NGTS is well-suited to the measurement of shallow transits of bright targets. We analyse the compiled set of precursory data that were reported to be available in real time before the Ms 7.5 Haicheng earthquake in Feb. 1975 and the Ms 7.6-7.8 Tangshan earthquake in July 1976. We propose a robust and simple coarse-graining method consisting in aggregating and counting how all the anomalies together (geodesy, levelling, geomagnetism, soil resistivity, Earth currents, gravity, Earth stress, well water radon, well water level) develop as a function of time. We demonstrate a strong evidence for the existence of an acceleration of the number of anomalies leading up to the major Haicheng and Tangshan earthquakes. In particular for the Tangshan earthquake, the frequency of occurrence of anomalies is found to be well described by the log-periodic power law singularity (LPPLS) model, previously proposed for the prediction of engineering failures and later adapted to the prediction of financial crashes. Based on a mock real-time prediction experiment, and simulation study, we show the potential for an early warning system with lead-time of a few days, based on this methodology of monitoring accelerated rates of anomalies., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables

In this third paper of the MOVES (Multiwavelength Observations of an eVaporating Exoplanet and its Star) programme, we combine Hubble Space Telescope far-ultraviolet observations with XMM-Newton/Swift X-ray observations to measure the emission of HD 189733 in various FUV lines, and its soft X-ray spectrum. Based on these measurements we characterise the interstellar medium toward HD 189733 and derive semi-synthetic XUV spectra of the star, which are used to study the evolution of its high-energy emission at five different epochs. Two flares from HD 189733 are observed, but we propose that the long-term variations in its spectral energy distribution have the most important consequences for the environment of HD 189733b. Reduced coronal and wind activity could favour the formation of a dense population of Si$^{2+}$ atoms in a bow-shock ahead of the planet, responsible for pre- and in-transit absorption measured in the first two epochs. In-transit absorption signatures are detected in the Lyman-$\alpha$ line in the second, third and fifth epochs, which could arise from the extended planetary thermosphere and a tail of stellar wind protons neutralised via charge-exchange with the planetary exosphere. We propose that increases in the X-ray irradiation of the planet, and decreases in its EUV irradiation causing lower photoionisation rates of neutral hydrogen, favour the detection of these signatures by sustaining larger densities of H$^{0}$ atoms in the upper atmosphere and boosting charge-exchanges with the stellar wind. Deeper and broader absorption signatures in the last epoch suggest that the planet entered a different evaporation regime, providing clues as to the link between stellar activity and the structure of the planetary environment., Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS on 23 January 2020

The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, TESS, is currently carrying out an all-sky search for small planets transiting bright stars. In the first year of the TESS survey, steady progress was made in achieving the mission's primary science goal of establishing bulk densities for 50 planets smaller than Neptune. During that year, TESS's observations were focused on the southern ecliptic hemisphere, resulting in the discovery of three mini-Neptunes orbiting the star TOI-125, a V=11.0 K0 dwarf. We present intensive HARPS radial velocity observations, yielding precise mass measurements for TOI-125b, TOI-125c and TOI-125d. TOI-125b has an orbital period of 4.65 days, a radius of $2.726 \pm 0.075 ~\mathrm{R_{\rm E}}$, a mass of $ 9.50 \pm 0.88 ~\mathrm{M_{\rm E}}$ and is near the 2:1 mean motion resonance with TOI-125c at 9.15 days. TOI-125c has a similar radius of $2.759 \pm 0.10 ~\mathrm{R_{\rm E}}$ and a mass of $ 6.63 \pm 0.99 ~\mathrm{M_{\rm E}}$, being the puffiest of the three planets. TOI-125d, has an orbital period of 19.98 days and a radius of $2.93 \pm 0.17~\mathrm{R_{\rm E}}$ and mass $13.6 \pm 1.2 ~\mathrm{M_{\rm E}}$. For TOI-125b and TOI-125d we find unusual high eccentricities of $0.19\pm 0.04$ and $0.17^{+0.08}_{-0.06}$, respectively. Our analysis also provides upper mass limits for the two low-SNR planet candidates in the system; for TOI-125.04 ($R_P=1.36 ~\mathrm{R_{\rm E}}$, $P=$0.53 days) we find a $2\sigma$ upper mass limit of $1.6~\mathrm{M_{\rm E}}$, whereas TOI-125.05 ( $R_P=4.2^{+2.4}_{-1.4} ~\mathrm{R_{\rm E}}$, $P=$ 13.28 days) is unlikely a viable planet candidate with upper mass limit $2.7~\mathrm{M_{\rm E}}$. We determine rotation periods for 127 stars in the ~115 Myr old Blanco 1 open cluster using ~200 days of photometric monitoring with the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). These stars span F5-M3 spectral types (1.2 $\gtrsim M \gtrsim$ 0.3 M$_{\odot}$) and increase the number of known rotation periods in Blanco 1 by a factor of four. We determine rotation periods using three methods: Gaussian process (GP) regression, generalised autocorrelation (G-ACF) and Lomb-Scargle (LS) periodograms, and find that GPs and G-ACF are more applicable to evolving spot modulation patterns. Between mid-F and mid-K spectral types, single stars follow a well-defined rotation sequence from ~2 to 10 days, whereas stars in photometric multiple systems typically rotate faster. This may suggest that the presence of a moderate-to-high mass ratio companion inhibits angular momentum loss mechanisms during the early pre-main sequence, and this signature has not been erased at ~100 Myr. The majority of mid-F to mid-K stars display evolving modulation patterns, whereas most M stars show stable modulation signals. This morphological change coincides with the shift from a well-defined rotation sequence (mid-F to mid-K stars) to a broad rotation period distribution (late-K and M stars). Finally, we compare our rotation results for Blanco 1 to the similarly-aged Pleiades: the single star populations in both clusters possess consistent rotation period distributions, which suggests that the angular momentum evolution of stars follows a well-defined pathway that is, at least for mid-F to mid-K stars, strongly imprinted by ~100 Myr., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The chemical abundances of exoplanet atmospheres may provide valuable information about the bulk compositions, formation pathways, and evolutionary histories of planets. Exoplanets with large, relatively cloud-free atmospheres, and which orbit bright stars provide the best opportunities for accurate abundance measurements. For this reason, we measured the transmission spectrum of the bright (V~10.2), large (1.37 R$_{J}$), sub-Saturn mass (0.19 M$_{J}$) exoplanet WASP-127b across the near-UV to near-infrared wavelength range (0.3 - 5 $\mu$m), using the Hubble and Spitzer Space Telescopes. Our results show a feature-rich transmission spectrum, with absorption from Na, H$_{2}$O, and CO$_{2}$, and wavelength-dependent scattering from small-particle condensates. We ran two types of atmospheric retrieval models: one enforcing chemical equilibrium, and the other which fit the abundances freely. Our retrieved abundances at chemical equilibrium for Na, O and C are all super-solar, with abundances relative to solar values of 9$^{+15}_{-6}$, 16$^{+7}_{-5}$, and 26$^{+12}_{-9}$ respectively. Despite giving conflicting C/O ratios, both retrievals gave super-solar CO$_{2}$ volume mixing ratios, which adds to the likelihood that WASP-127b's bulk metallicity is super-solar, since CO$_{2}$ abundance is highly sensitive to atmospheric metallicity. We detect water at a significance of 13.7 $\sigma$. Our detection of Na is in agreement with previous ground-based detections, though we find a much lower abundance, and we also do not find evidence for Li or K despite increased sensitivity. In the future, spectroscopy with JWST will be able to constrain WASP-127b's C/O ratio, and may reveal the formation history of this metal-enriched, highly observable exoplanet., Comment: Accepted to MNRAS

Transiting extrasolar planets are key objects in the study of the formation, migration, and evolution of planetary systems. In particular, the exploration of the atmospheres of giant planets, through transmission spectroscopy or direct imaging, has revealed a large diversity in their chemical composition and physical properties. Studying these giant planets allows one to test the global climate models that are used for the Earth and other solar system planets. However, these studies are mostly limited either to highly-irradiated transiting giant planets or directly-imaged giant planets at large separations. Here we report the physical characterisation of the planets in a bright multi-planetary system (HIP41378) in which the outer planet, HIP41378 f is a Saturn-sized planet (9.2 $\pm$ 0.1 R$_\oplus$) with an anomalously low density of 0.09 $\pm$ 0.02 g cm$^{-3}$ that is not yet understood. Its equilibrium temperature is about 300 K. Therefore, it represents a planet with a mild temperature, in between the hot Jupiters and the colder giant planets of the Solar System. It opens a new window for atmospheric characterisation of giant exoplanets with a moderate irradiation, with the next-generation space telescopes such as JWST and ARIEL as well as the extremely-large ground-based telescopes. We report the discovery, by the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS), of two hot-Jupiters NGTS-8b and NGTS-9b. These orbit a V = 13.68 K0V star (Teff = 5241 +/- 50 K) with a period of 2.49970 days, and a V = 12.80 F8V star (Teff = 6330 +/- 130 K) in 4.43527 days, respectively. The transits were independently verified by follow-up photometric observations with the SAAO 1.0-m and Euler telescopes, and we report on the planetary parameters using HARPS, FEROS and CORALIE radial velocities. NGTS-8b has a mass, 0.93 +0.04 -0.03 MJ and a radius, 1.09 +/- 0.03 RJ similar to Jupiter, resulting in a density of 0.89 +0.08 -0.07 g cm-3. This is in contrast to NGTS-9b, which has a mass of 2.90 +/- 0.17 MJ and a radius of 1.07 +/- 0.06 RJ , resulting in a much greater density of 2.93 +0.53 -0.49 g cm-3. Statistically, the planetary parameters put both objects in the regime where they would be expected to exhibit larger than predicted radii. The hot Jupiter HD189733b is expected to be a source of strong radio emission, due to its close proximity to its magnetically active host star. Here, we model the stellar wind of its host star, based on reconstructed surface stellar magnetic field maps. We use the local stellar wind properties at the planetary orbit obtained from our models to compute the expected radio emission from the planet. Our findings show that the planet emits with a peak flux density within the detection capabilities of LOFAR. However, due to absorption by the stellar wind itself, this emission may be attenuated significantly. We show that the best time to observe the system is when the planet is near primary transit of the host star, as the attenuation from the stellar wind is lowest in this region., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (\tess) produces a large number of single-transit event candidates, since the mission monitors most stars for only $\sim$27\,days. Such candidates correspond to long-period planets or eclipsing binaries. Using the \tess\ Sector 1 full-frame images, we identified a 7750\,ppm single-transit event with a duration of 7\,hours around the moderately evolved F-dwarf star \tic\ (Tmag=10.23, \teff=6280$\pm{85}$\,K). Using archival WASP photometry we constrained the true orbital period to one of three possible values. We detected a subsequent transit-event with NGTS, which revealed the orbital period to be 38.20\,d. Radial velocity measurements from the CORALIE Spectrograph show the secondary object has a mass of $M_2$= $0.148\pm{0.003}$\,M$_{\odot}$, indicating this system is an F-M eclipsing binary. The radius of the M-dwarf companion is $R_2$ = $0.171\pm{0.003}$\,R$_{\odot}$, making this one of the most well characterised stars in this mass regime. We report the period, eccentricity, and mass determination for the TESS single-transit event candidate TOI-222, which displayed a single 3000 ppm transit in the TESS two-minute cadence data from Sector 2. We determine the orbital period via radial velocity measurements (P=33.9,days), which allowed for ground-based photometric detection of two subsequent transits. Our data show that the companion to TOI-222 is a low mass star, with a radius of $0.18_{-0.10}^{+0.39}$ Rsun and a mass of $0.23\pm0.01$ Msun. This discovery showcases the ability to efficiently discover long-period systems from TESS single transit events using a combination of radial velocity monitoring coupled with high precision ground-based photometry., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The detection of low-mass transiting exoplanets in multiple systems brings new constraints to planetary formation and evolution processes and challenges the current planet formation theories. Nevertheless, only a mere fraction of the small planets detected by Kepler and K2 have precise mass measurements, which are mandatory to constrain their composition. We aim to characterise the planets that orbit the relatively bright star K2-138. This system is dynamically particular as it presents the longest chain known to date of planets close to the 3:2 resonance. We obtained 215 HARPS spectra from which we derived the radial-velocity variations of K2-138. Via a joint Bayesian analysis of both the K2 photometry and HARPS radial-velocities (RVs), we constrained the parameters of the six planets in orbit. The masses of the four inner planets, from b to e, are 3.1, 6.3, 7.9, and 13.0 $\mathrm{M}_{\oplus}$ with a precision of 34%, 20%, 18%, and 15%, respectively. The bulk densities are 4.9, 2.8, 3.2, and 1.8 g cm$^{-3}$, ranging from Earth to Neptune-like values. For planets f and g, we report upper limits. Finally, we predict transit timing variations of the order two to six minutes from the masses derived. Given its peculiar dynamics, K2-138 is an ideal target for transit timing variation (TTV) measurements from space with the upcoming CHaracterizing ExOPlanet Satellite (CHEOPS) to study this highly-packed system and compare TTV and RV masses.

We report the discovery of a new ultra-short period transiting hot Jupiter from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). NGTS-10b has a mass and radius of $2.162\,^{+0.092}_{-0.107}$ M$_{\rm J}$ and $1.205\,^{+0.117}_{-0.083}$ R$_{\rm J}$ and orbits its host star with a period of $0.7668944\pm0.0000003$ days, making it the shortest period hot Jupiter yet discovered. The host is a $10.4\pm2.5$ Gyr old K5V star ($T_\mathrm{eff}$=$4400\pm100$\,K) of Solar metallicity ([Fe/H] = $-0.02\pm0.12$\,dex) showing moderate signs of stellar activity. NGTS-10b joins a short list of ultra-short period Jupiters that are prime candidates for the study of star-planet tidal interactions. NGTS-10b orbits its host at just $1.46\pm0.18$ Roche radii, and we calculate a median remaining inspiral time of $38$\,Myr and a potentially measurable transit time shift of $7$\,seconds over the coming decade, assuming a stellar tidal quality factor $Q'_{\rm s}=2\times10^{7}$., Comment: 16 pages, 19 figures and 5 tables. We present a ground-based transmission spectrum and comprehensive retrieval analysis of the highly inflated Saturn-mass planet WASP-39b. We obtained low-resolution spectra ($R \approx 400$) of a transit of WASP-39b using the ACAM instrument on the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope as part of the LRG-BEASTS survey. Our transmission spectrum is in good agreement with previous ground- and space-based observations of WASP-39b, and covers a wavelength range of 4000-9000A. Previous analyses of this exoplanet have retrieved water abundances that span more than four orders of magnitude, which in turn lead to conclusions of a subsolar or highly supersolar atmospheric metallicity. In order to determine the cause of the large discrepancies in the literature regarding WASP-39b's atmospheric metallicity, we performed retrieval analyses of all literature data sets. Our retrievals, which assume equilibrium chemistry, recovered highly supersolar metallicities for all data sets. When running our retrievals on a combined spectrum, spanning 0.3-5$\mu$m, we recovered an atmospheric metallicity of $282^{+65}_{-58} \times$ solar. We find that stellar activity has a negligible effect on the derived abundances and instead conclude that different assumptions made during retrieval analyses lead to the reported water abundances that differ by orders of magnitude. This in turn has significant consequences for the conclusions we draw. Vetting of exoplanet candidates in transit surveys is a manual process, which suffers from a large number of false positives and a lack of consistency. Previous work has shown that Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) provide an efficient solution to these problems. Here, we apply a CNN to classify planet candidates from the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). For training datasets we compare both real data with injected planetary transits and fully-simulated data, as well as how their different compositions affect network performance. We show that fewer hand labelled lightcurves can be utilised, while still achieving competitive results. With our best model, we achieve an AUC (area under the curve) score of $(95.6\pm{0.2})\%$ and an accuracy of $(88.5\pm{0.3})\%$ on our unseen test data, as well as $(76.5\pm{0.4})\%$ and $(74.6\pm{1.1})\%$ in comparison to our existing manual classifications. The neural network recovers 13 out of 14 confirmed planets observed by NGTS, with high probability. We use simulated data to show that the overall network performance is resilient to mislabelling of the training dataset, a problem that might arise due to unidentified, low signal-to-noise transits. Using a CNN, the time required for vetting can be reduced by half, while still recovering the vast majority of manually flagged candidates. The number of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) known to have occurred in the distant Universe (z greater than 5) is small (approx 15), however these events provide a powerful way of probing star formation at the onset of galaxy evolution. In this paper, we present the case for GRB100205A being a largely overlooked high-redshift event. While initially noted as a high-z candidate, this event and its host galaxy have not been explored in detail. By combining optical and near-infrared Gemini afterglow imaging (at t less than 1.3 days since burst) with deep late-time limits on host emission from the Hubble Space Telescope, we show that the most likely scenario is that GRB100205A arose in the redshift range 4-8. GRB100205A is an example of a burst whose afterglow, even at 1 hour post-burst, could only be identified by 8m class IR observations, and suggests that such observations of all optically dark bursts may be necessary to significantly enhance the number of high-redshift GRBs known., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the discovery of NGTS-7Ab, a high mass brown dwarf transiting an M dwarf with a period of 16.2 hours, discovered as part of the Next Generation Transit Survey (NGTS). This is the shortest period transiting brown dwarf around a main or pre-main sequence star to date. The M star host (NGTS-7A) has an age of roughly 55 Myr and is in a state of spin-orbit synchronisation, which we attribute to tidal interaction with the brown dwarf acting to spin up the star. The host star is magnetically active and shows multiple flares across the NGTS and follow up lightcurves, which we use to probe the flare-starspot phase relation. The host star also has an M star companion at a separation of 1.13 arcseconds with very similar proper motion and systemic velocity, suggesting the NGTS-7 system is a hierarchical triple. The combination of tidal synchronisation and magnetic braking is expected to drive ongoing decay of the brown dwarf orbit, with a remaining lifetime of only 5-10 Myr., Comment: 21 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society
