The article aims to reflect on topics faced by Giovanni Solimine in his book La biblioteca: scenari, culture, pratiche di servizio (Laterza, 2004) and on the author's purpose of «proposing an interpretation of the transformations that are affecting the system of production and circulation of knowledge and [...] reflecting on the position that the library assumes in this context». Solimine's volume is about libraries as center of the social system of knowledge creation, transfer and transformation, and it does not aim to 'dissect' their structure and functions. Metadati, catalogazione, biblioteche digitali - Abstract

- Abstract
In Epicureanism, "universe" is not "world". Our world "works" because it has its own rules, but within the universe as such many sets of possibly very different rules are perfectly possible. So our world has an internal meaning, but not the universe. Lucretius's text is compared with Heidegger, Montale, and Leopardi.

The extent of cultural heritage in digital format requires the creation of tools designed to improve access to and to enhance the added value deriving from the intersection of data originated in heterogeneous environments. Within an aggregational portal, cross-domain navigation is a particularly critical issue given the wide spectrum of criteria to which data and digital objects conform. Furthermore, data models supporting interoperability, such as Dublin Core, have a flat structure and a reduced granularity, thus contributing to the loss of information as well as to the decontextualization of the objects.Adopting the same format and descriptive rules for all classes of materials, a practical solution implemented by many English speaking countries in the last decade of the 20th century, is no longer an option. Much more feasible appears nowadays the creation of more complex data models, as in the case of Europeana Data Model, or the implementation of clustering strategies, such as in VIAF. In perspective, the Linked Open Data option appears quite promising. Based on the experience of BeWeb, the portal created and coordinated by the National Office for the Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage (UNBCE) of the Italian Catholic Bishops’ Conference (CEI) to provide access to its many databases, authority data can be successfully used to bring together information provided by different sources. Data clustering appears to be a viable strategy for the purpose of preserving the quality of the original description and providing the user with a more accurate context information.

SEMANTIC Web , *SOCIAL goals , *SOFTWARE development tools , *COVID-19 , *CATALOGING , *PUBLIC libraries , *ONLINE library catalogs - Abstract
Digital cataloguing practices carried out by libraries, particularly public libraries, present a number of critical issues, that the Covid-19 contingency has greatly emphasised. Criteria adopted to identify and to describe digital reproductions of analogue publications, as well as native digital editions, appear to be inconsistent and misleading. So far cataloguers have acted on the assumption that digital reproductions have the same features of xeroxes, microfilms or microfiches. New software tools, combined with the greater flexibility of digital files, imply that differences existing between the two media should require a different treatment in terms of cataloguing. Characteristics specific to digital objects deserve to be described with the same care as those of analogue publications in the first place because they have an impact on the way readers can make use of them, and secondly because they could be used as search keys, especially as query facets. Another area of concern is the development of descriptive standards aimed at bringing into the catalogue resources of a different nature from bibliographic items. The reason for doing so is the idea of turning the catalogue into part of the semantic infrastructure of the web. Having given insufficient consideration to cataloguing principles and to catalogue functions, in favour of a more pragmatic approach, is threatening to strip the catalogue of its substance, encouraging at the same time the replacement of library services with those offered by subjects not sharing the same cultural and social goals. - Abstract
Railway pantographs are used around the world for collecting electrical energy to power railway vehicles from the overhead catenary. Faults in the pantograph system degrade the quality of the contact between the pantograph and catenary and reduce the reliability of railway operations. To maintain the pantographs in a good working condition, regular inspection tasks are carried out at rolling stock depots. The current pantograph inspections, in general, are only effective for the detection of major faults, providing limited incipient fault detection or fault diagnosis capabilities. Condition monitoring of pantographs has the potential to improve pantograph performance and reduce maintenance costs. As a first step in the realisation of practical pantograph condition monitoring, a laboratory-based pantograph test rig has been developed to gain an understanding of pantograph dynamic behaviours, particularly when incipient faults are present. In the first work of this kind, dynamic response data have been acquired from a number of pantographs that have allowed fault detection and diagnosis algorithms to be developed and verified. Three tests have been developed: (i) a hysteresis test that uses different excitation speeds, (ii) a frequency response test that uses different excitation frequencies, and (iii) a novel changing gradient test. Verification tests indicate that the hysteresis test is effective in detecting and diagnosing pneumatic actuator and elbow joint faults. The frequency response test is able to monitor the overall degradation in the pantograph. The changing gradient test provides fault detection and diagnosis in the pantograph head suspension and pneumatic actuator. The test rig and fault detection and diagnosis algorithms are now being developed into a depot-based prototype together with a number of industrial partners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Defects in railway axle bearings can affect operational efficiency, or cause in-service failures, damaging the track and train. Healthy bearings produce a certain level of vibration and noise, but a bearing with a defect causes substantial changes in the vibration and noise levels. It is possible to detect the bearing defects at an early stage of their development, allowing an operator to repair the damage before it becomes serious. When a vehicle is scheduled for maintenance, or due for overhaul, knowledge of bearing damage and severity is beneficial, resulting in fewer operational problems and optimised fleet availability. This paper is a review of the state of the art in condition monitoring systems for rolling element bearings, especially the axlebox bearings. This includes exploring the sensing technologies, summarising the main signal processing methods and condition monitoring techniques, i.e. wayside and on-board. Examples of commercially available systems and outputs of current research work are presented. The effectiveness of the current monitoring technologies is assessed and the p-f curve is presented. It is concluded that the research and practical tests on axlebox bearing monitoring are limited compared to the generic bearing applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The consequence of reduced cognitive ability from inbreeding has long been investigated, mainly restricted to cousin-cousin marriages. Molecular genetic techniques now allow us to test the relationship between increased ancestral inbreeding and cognitive ability in a population of traditionally unrelated individuals. In a representative UK sample of 2329 individuals, we used genome-wide SNP data to estimate the percentage of the genome covered by runs of homozygous SNPs (ROH). This was tested for association with general cognitive ability, as well as measures of verbal and non-verbal ability. Further, association was tested between these traits and specific ROH. Burden of ROH was not associated with cognitive ability after correction for multiple testing, although burden of ROH was nominally associated with increased non-verbal cognitive ability (P=0.03). Moreover, although no individual ROH was significantly associated with cognitive ability, there was a significant bias towards increased cognitive ability in carriers of ROH (P=0.002). A potential explanation for these results is increased positive assortative mating in spouses with higher cognitive ability, although we found no evidence in support of this hypothesis in a separate sample. Reduced minor allele frequency across the genome was associated with higher cognitive ability, which could contribute to an apparent increase in ROH. This may reflect minor alleles being more likely to be deleterious.

- Abstract
Variants at microRNA-137 (MIR137), one of the most strongly associated schizophrenia risk loci identified to date, have been associated with poorer cognitive performance. As microRNA-137 is known to regulate the expression of ~1900 other genes, including several that are independently associated with schizophrenia, we tested whether this gene set was also associated with variation in cognitive performance. Our analysis was based on an empirically derived list of genes whose expression was altered by manipulation of MIR137 expression. This list was cross-referenced with genome-wide schizophrenia association data to construct individual polygenic scores. We then tested, in a sample of 808 patients and 192 controls, whether these risk scores were associated with altered performance on cognitive functions known to be affected in schizophrenia. A subgroup of healthy participants also underwent functional imaging during memory (n=108) and face processing tasks (n=83). Increased polygenic risk within the empirically derived miR-137 regulated gene score was associated with significantly lower performance on intelligence quotient, working memory and episodic memory. These effects were observed most clearly at a polygenic threshold of P=0.05, although significant results were observed at all three thresholds analyzed. This association was found independently for the gene set as a whole, excluding the schizophrenia-associated MIR137 SNP itself. Analysis of the spatial working memory fMRI task further suggested that increased risk score (thresholded at P=10−5) was significantly associated with increased activation of the right inferior occipital gyrus. In conclusion, these data are consistent with emerging evidence that MIR137 associated risk for schizophrenia may relate to its broader downstream genetic effects.

Statins effectively lower LDL cholesterol levels in large studies and the observed interindividual response variability may be partially explained by genetic variation. Here we perform a pharmacogenetic meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in studies addressing the LDL cholesterol response to statins, including up to 18,596 statin-treated subjects. We validate the most promising signals in a further 22,318 statin recipients and identify two loci, SORT1/CELSR2/PSRC1 and SLCO1B1, not previously identified in GWAS. Moreover, we confirm the previously described associations with APOE and LPA. Our findings advance the understanding of the pharmacogenetic architecture of statin response., Statins are effectively used to prevent and manage cardiovascular disease, but patient response to these drugs is highly variable. Here, the authors identify two new genes associated with the response of LDL cholesterol to statins and advance our understanding of the genetic basis of drug response.

Exfoliation syndrome (XFS) is the most common recognizable cause of open-angle glaucoma worldwide. To better understand the etiology of XFS, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 1,484 cases and 1,188 controls from Japan and followed up the most significant findings in a further 6,901 cases and 20,727 controls from 17 countries across 6 continents. We discovered a genome-wide significant association between a new locus (CACNA1A rs4926244) and increased susceptibility to XFS (odds ratio (OR) = 1.16, P = 3.36 × 10(-11)). Although we also confirmed overwhelming association at the LOXL1 locus, the key SNP marker (LOXL1 rs4886776) demonstrated allelic reversal depending on the ancestry group (Japanese: OR(A allele) = 9.87, P = 2.13 × 10(-217); non-Japanese: OR(A allele) = 0.49, P = 2.35 × 10(-31)). Our findings represent the first genetic locus outside of LOXL1 surpassing genome-wide significance for XFS and provide insight into the biology and pathogenesis of the disease.

Epidemiological and genetic data support the notion that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder share genetic risk factors. In our previous genome-wide association study, meta-analysis and follow-up (totaling as many as 18 206 cases and 42 536 controls), we identified four loci showing genome-wide significant association with schizophrenia. Here we consider a mixed schizophrenia and bipolar disorder (psychosis) phenotype (addition of 7469 bipolar disorder cases, 1535 schizophrenia cases, 333 other psychosis cases, 808 unaffected family members and 46 160 controls). Combined analysis reveals a novel variant at 16p11.2 showing genome-wide significant association (rs4583255[T]; odds ratio=1.08; P=6.6 × 10(-11)). The new variant is located within a 593-kb region that substantially increases risk of psychosis when duplicated. In line with the association of the duplication with reduced body mass index (BMI), rs4583255[T] is also associated with lower BMI (P=0.0039 in the public GIANT consortium data set; P=0.00047 in 22 651 additional Icelanders). Glaucoma is characterized by irreversible optic nerve degeneration and is the most frequent cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Here, the International Glaucoma Genetics Consortium conducts a meta-analysis of genome-wide association studies of vertical cup-disc ratio (VCDR), an important disease-related optic nerve parameter. In 21,094 individuals of European ancestry and 6,784 individuals of Asian ancestry, we identify 10 new loci associated with variation in VCDR. In a separate risk-score analysis of five case-control studies, Caucasians in the highest quintile have a 2.5-fold increased risk of primary open-angle glaucoma as compared with those in the lowest quintile. This study has more than doubled the known loci associated with optic disc cupping and will allow greater understanding of mechanisms involved in this common blinding condition., Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Here, the authors carry out a large meta-analysis of genetic data from individuals of European and Asian ancestry and identify 10 new loci associated with vertical cup-disc ratio, a key factor in the clinical assessment of patients with glaucoma.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has a number of known genetic risk factors. Clinical and epidemiological studies have suggested the existence of intermediate factors that may be associated with additional risk of PD. We construct genetic risk profiles for additional epidemiological and clinical factors using known genome-wide association studies (GWAS) loci related to these specific phenotypes to estimate genetic comorbidity in a systematic review. We identify genetic risk profiles based on GWAS variants associated with schizophrenia and Crohn's disease as significantly associated with risk of PD. Conditional analyses adjusting for SNPs near loci associated with PD and schizophrenia or PD and Crohn's disease suggest that spatially overlapping loci associated with schizophrenia and PD account for most of the shared comorbidity, while variation outside of known proximal loci shared by PD and Crohn's disease accounts for their shared genetic comorbidity. We examine brain methylation and expression signatures proximal to schizophrenia and Crohn's disease loci to infer functional changes in the brain associated with the variants contributing to genetic comorbidity. We compare our results with a systematic review of epidemiological literature, while the findings are dissimilar to a degree; marginal genetic associations corroborate the directionality of associations across genetic and epidemiological data. We show a strong genetically defined level of comorbidity between PD and Crohn's disease as well as between PD and schizophrenia, with likely functional consequences of associated variants occurring in brain.

- Abstract
Monitoring traps baited with potent attractants of animals like insects have long played a critical role in revealing what pests are present and when they are active. However, pest managers have been laboring without the tools necessary for quick and inexpensive determination of absolute pest density, which is the cornerstone of pest management decisions. This book fills that gap by demonstrating how catch numbers from monitoring traps can be translated into measures of pests per given area of crop and accurate projections of damage. An unhappy fact of life from the human perspective is that small animals such as insects, mites, mollusks, and nematodes compete severely for our food and fiber. Moreover, some of these creatures vector diseases such as malaria, which kills more than a million humans each year. An imperative of a civilized world is that pests be accurately monitored so that control measures like pesticides are used only when the benefits clearly outweigh the risks to the health of humans, non-target organisms, and the environment.
