Abstract Describing intracortical laminar organization of interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) and high frequency oscillations (HFOs), also known as ripples. Defining the frequency limits of slow and fast ripples. We recorded potential gradients with laminar multielectrode arrays (LME) for current source density (CSD) and multi-unit activity (MUA) analysis of interictal epileptiform discharges IEDs and HFOs in the neocortex and mesial temporal lobe of focal epilepsy patients. IEDs were observed in 20/29, while ripples only in 9/29 patients. Ripples were all detected within the seizure onset zone (SOZ). Compared to hippocampal HFOs, neocortical ripples proved to be longer, lower in frequency and amplitude, and presented non-uniform cycles. A subset of ripples (≈ 50%) co-occurred with IEDs, while IEDs were shown to contain variable high-frequency activity, even below HFO detection threshold. The limit between slow and fast ripples was defined at 150 Hz, while IEDs’ high frequency components form clusters separated at 185 Hz. CSD analysis of IEDs and ripples revealed an alternating sink-source pair in the supragranular cortical layers, although fast ripple CSD appeared lower and engaged a wider cortical domain than slow ripples MUA analysis suggested a possible role of infragranularly located neural populations in ripple and IED generation. ObjectiveThis study aims to test the association of rest-activity rhythm (intradaily variability and interdaily stability) with all-cause mortality in an older adult cohort in Brazil. It also assesses whether the amount of time spent at each intensity level (i.e., physical activity and nocturnal sleep) interferes with this association.MethodsThis cohort study started in 2014 with older adults (≥60 years). We investigated deaths from all causes that occurred until April 2017. Rest-activity rhythm variables were obtained using accelerometry at baseline. Intradaily variability indicates higher rhythm fragmentation, while interdaily stability indicates higher rhythm stability. Cox proportional-hazard models were used to test the associations controlling for confounders.ResultsAmong the 1451 older adults interviewed in 2014, 965 presented valid accelerometry data. During the follow-up period, 80 individuals died. After adjusting the analysis for sociodemographic, smoking, morbidity score, and number of medicines, an increase of one standard deviation in interdaily stability decreased 26% the risk of death. The adjustment for total sleep time and inactivity did not change this association. On the other hand, the association was no longer significant after adjusting for overall physical activity and moderate to vigorous physical activity.ConclusionRest-activity rhythm pattern was not associated with mortality when physical activity was considered, possibly because this pattern could be driven by regular exercise. Promoting physical activity remains a relevant strategy to improve population health.

Abstract Symbiotic species, living within or on the surface of host organisms, may evolve a wide range of adaptations as a result of various selection pressures, host specificity of the symbiont and the nature of the symbiosis. In tropical marine coral reef ecosystems, palaemonid shrimps (Crustacea: Decapoda: Caridea) live in association with at least five different invertebrate phyla. Host switches between (distantly) related host groups, and the thereby associated selection pressures were found to play a major role in the diversification of these shrimp lineages, giving rise to various host‐specific adaptations. Two lineages of palaemonid shrimp, which have switched from an ectosymbiotic association towards endosymbiosis, are studied for their morphological diversification and possible convergence. Special attention is given to the between‐phyla host switches involving ascidian and bivalve hosts, which are characteristic for these lineages. Using landmark‐based (phylo)morphospace analyses and Scanning Electron Microscopy, the walking leg dactylus shape and the microstructures on these dactyli are studied. No specific bivalve‐ or ascidian‐associated morphotypes were found, but morphological convergence in dactylus morphology was found in various species within the two studied clades with similar host groups. In addition, multiple lineages of bivalve‐associated species appear to be morphologically diverging more than their ascidian‐associated relatives, with ‘intermediate’ morphotypes found near host‐switching events.

During citizen-science expeditions to the Ulu Temburong National Park, Brunei, several individuals were collected of a semi-slug species of the genus Microparmarion that, based on morphology and in-the-field DNA-barcoding, was found to be an undescribed species.In this paper, we describe Microparmarion sallehi Wu, Ezzwan & Hamdani, n. sp., after field centre supervisor Md Salleh Abdullah Bat. We provide details on the external and internal reproductive morphology, the shell and the ecology of the type locality, as well as a diagnosis comparing it with related species. DNA barcodes were generated for five individuals and used for a phylogenetic reconstruction. Microparmarion sallehi sp. n. and M. exquadratus Schilthuizen et al., 2019 so far are the only Bornean species of the genus that live in lowland forest; other species are found in montane forests.
