176. Accreting Transition Discs with large cavities created by X-ray photoevaporation in C and O depleted discs

Abstract

Circumstellar discs with large dust depleted cavities and vigorous accretion onto the central star are often considered signposts for (multiple) giant planet formation. In this letter we show that X-ray photoevaporation operating in discs with modest (factors 3-10) gas-phase depletion of Carbon and Oxygen at large radii (> 15 AU) yield the inner radius and accretion rates for most of the observed discs, without the need to invoke giant planet formation. We present one-dimensional viscous evolution models of discs affected by X-ray photoevaporation assuming moderate gas-phase depletion of Carbon and Oxygen, well within the range reported by recent observations. Our models use a simplified prescription for scaling the X-ray photoevaporation rates and profiles at different metallicity, and our quantitative result depends on this scaling. While more rigorous hydrodynamical modelling of mass loss profiles at low metallicities is required to constrain the observational parameter space that can be explained by our models, the general conclusion that metal sequestering at large radii may be responsible for the observed diversity of transition discs is shown to be robust. Abstract

Nearby, active stars with relatively rapid rotation and large starspot structures offer the opportunity to compare interferometric, spectroscopic, and photometric imaging techniques. In this paper, we image a spotted star with three different methods for the first time. The giant primary star of the RS Canum Venaticorum binary $\sigma$ Geminorum ($\sigma$ Gem) was imaged for two epochs of interferometric, high-resolution spectroscopic, and photometric observations. The light curves from the reconstructions show good agreement with the observed light curves, supported by the longitudinally-consistent spot features on the different maps. Abstract

Grid maps are widely used in robotics to represent obstacles in the environment and differentiating dynamic objects from static infrastructure is essential for many practical applications. In this work, we present a methods that uses a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to infer whether grid cells are covering a moving object or not. Compared to tracking approaches, that use e.g. a particle filter to estimate grid cell velocities and then make a decision for individual grid cells based on this estimate, our approach uses the entire grid map as input image for a CNN that inspects a larger area around each cell and thus takes the structural appearance in the grid map into account to make a decision. Compared to our reference method, our concept yields a performance increase from 83.9% to 97.2%. Abstract

Background and Objective Materials and Methods Results Discussion and Conclusions Clinical Trial Information Studies examining ambulatory blood pressure (BP) response to testosterone replacement therapy are needed owing to inconsistent prior findings across formulations. This study assessed testosterone gel 1.62% and 24‐h ambulatory BP.Single‐arm non‐inferiority trial (NCT04274894) conducted at 36 US sites enrolled 246 men with hypogonadism (mean age, 57.6 years; mean office systolic/diastolic BP [SBP/DBP], 129.8/79.5 mm Hg) who were treated for 16 weeks with once‐daily testosterone gel treatment (starting dose, 40.5 mg/day; min, max dose, 20.25, 81.0 mg/day) to achieve testosterone concentration of 350–750 ng/dL. Main outcome measures included mean change in 24‐h average SBP (primary endpoint) and DBP from baseline to week 16. The non‐inferiority threshold was a two‐sided 95% confidence interval (CI) upper limit <3.0 mm Hg for 24‐h average SBP.Increase in mean ± SD serum testosterone concentration to a physiologic level (baseline, 244.4 ± 93.9 ng/dL; week 16, 502.5 ± 394.4 ng/dL) was associated with a 1.9‐mm Hg mean change in 24‐h average SBP observed in the primary analysis (baseline, 123.5 mm Hg; week 16, 125.4 mm Hg; 95% CI, 0.63–3.13 mm Hg; n = 169). As the upper CI limit modestly exceeded the non‐inferiority margin (3 mm Hg), study drug effect on SBP could not be ruled out. Non‐inferiority was observed in subgroups without hypertension or diabetes (95% CI, upper limit <3.0 mm Hg) and was not observed in those with hypertension or diabetes. Daytime SBP and DBP changes were larger compared with nighttime. Abstract

"Big G " typically refers to aggregate government spending on a homogeneous good. We confront this notion with five facts for the universe of federal purchases. First, they are volatile and account for the largest part of the short-run variation in total spending. Second, the origin of their variation is granular. Third, purchases are subject to procurement and bidding. Fourth, they are concentrated in long-term contracts. Fifth, their composition is biased toward sectors in which private sector prices are sticky. Abstract

Decision-making processes are vulnerable to cognitive biases like hindsight bias, with particularly fateful consequences in forensic contexts. However, while debiasing strategies have been effective in various areas, their impact in forensics is underexplored. We investigated hindsight bias and a simple awareness-based debiasing strategy in novices (n = 52) and forensic professionals (n = 49). Participants were assigned to baseline, biased, or debiased conditions and rated an offender’s risk of re-offending using case vignettes. Significant hindsight bias was found in novices, but not experts who were also more aware of biases. Debiasing proved effective in novices, indicating that raising awareness may enhance equitable forensic decision-making. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Objective: The primary objective was to evaluate the impact of the upper instrumented level (UIV) being at C2 vs C3 in posterior cervical construct on patient reported outcomes (PROs) up to 24 months after surgery for cervical degenerative myelopathy (DCM). Secondary objectives were to compare operative time, intra-operative blood loss (IOBL), length of stay (LOS), adverse events (AEs) and re-operation. Methods: Patients who underwent a posterior cervical instrumented fusion (3 and + levels) with a C2 or C3 UIV, with 24 months follow-up were analyzed. PROs (NDI, EQ5D, SF-12 PCS/MCS, NRS arm/neck pain) were compared using ANCOVA. Operative duration, IOBL, AEs, and re-operation were compared. Subgroup analysis was performed on patient presenting with pre-operative malalignment (cervical sagittal vertical axis ≥40 mm and/or T1slope- cervical lordosis >15°). Results: 173 patients were included, of which 41 (24%) had a C2 UIV and 132 (76%) a C3 UIV. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups for the changes in PROs up to 24 months. Subgroup analysis of patients with pre-operative malalignment showed a trend towards greater improvement in the NDI at 12 months with a C2 UIV (P =.054). Operative time, IOBL and peri-operative AEs were more in C2 group (P <.05). There was no significant difference in LOS and re-operation (P >.05). Conclusion: In this observational study, up to 24 months after surgery for posterior cervical fusion in DCM greater than 3 levels, PROs appear to evolve similarly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Targeted therapies such as venetoclax (VEN) (Bcl-2 inhibitor) have revolutionized the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). We previously reported that persister CLL cells in treated patients overexpress multiple antiapoptotic proteins and display resistance to proapoptotic agents. Here, we demonstrated that multidrug-resistant CLL cells in vivo exhibited apoptosis restriction at a pre-mitochondrial level due to insufficient activation of the Bax and Bak (Bax/Bak) proteins. Co-immunoprecipitation analyses with selective BH domain antagonists revealed that the pleiotropic proapoptotic protein (Bim) was prevented from activating Bax/Bak by 'switching' interactions to other upregulated antiapoptotic proteins (Mcl-1, Bcl-xL, Bcl-2). Hence, treatments that bypass Bax/Bak restriction are required to deplete these resistant cells in patients. Protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) contributes to oncogenesis and treatment resistance. We observed that small-molecule activator of PP2A (SMAP) induced cytotoxicity in multiple cancer cell lines and CLL samples, including multidrug-resistant leukemia and lymphoma cells. The SMAP (DT-061) activated apoptosis in multidrug-resistant CLL cells through induction of mitochondrial permeability transition pores, independent of Bax/Bak. DT-061 inhibited the growth of wild-type and Bax/Bak doubleknockout, multidrug-resistant CLL cells in a xenograft mouse model. While most approaches to semantic reasoning have focused on improving performance, in this paper we argue that computational times are very important in order to enable real time applications such as autonomous driving. Our approach is very simple, can be trained end-to-end and performs extremely well in the challenging KITTI dataset, outperforming the state-of-the-art in the road segmentation task. 188. Comparing Content and Overlap in Two Large Academic eBook Collections

Abstract

This article discusses the difficulties Kutztown University's Rohrbach Library- and many libraries- face when evaluating eBook collections, and the process used to overcome some of the obstacles to making meaningful comparisons. Two multidisciplinary eBook subscription packages, EBSCO and ProQuest, are the focus of this study. Data collected from COUNTER reports and the integrated library system were input into Excel to examine the data. The authors show a comparison of the two collections while including the tremendous challenges and limitations involved in the process. This article emphasizes the need for COUNTER standardization, more consistent data reporting, and collection quality evaluation methods.

Abstract

Antihypertensive monotherapy is often insufficient to control blood pressure (BP). Several recent guidelines advocate for initial combination drug therapy in many patients. This meta-analysis of seven randomized, double-blind studies (N = 5888) evaluated 8 weeks of olmesartan medoxomil (OM)-based single-pill dual-combination therapy (OM+amlodipine/azelnidipine or hydrochlorothiazide) vs OM monotherapy in adults with hypertension. BP-lowering efficacy, goal achievement, and adverse events were assessed in the full cohort and subgroups (elderly/nonelderly and patients with and without chronic kidney disease). In the full cohort at week 8, for dual therapy vs monotherapy, seated BP was lower (137.5/86.1 mm Hg vs 144.4/89.9 mm Hg), and the mean change from baseline in BP and BP goal achievement (
