During some JET vertical displacement events (VDEs) plasma current and position are found to be toroidally asymmetric. When asymmetries lock, the vessel has been observed to move horizontally, consequently strong horizontal forces are expected following plasma asymmetries, whether locked or rotating. The cause of horizontal forces is, as already identified in previous works, the asymmetric circulation of current in the structures. The physics mechanism responsible for these asymmetric currents is instead an open issue and it is the object of the present analysis. In particular it will be shown that the asymmetry is not due to a direct exchange of current between plasma and structure (as in the case of halo currents) but to asymmetric conductive paths which arise, in the structures, when the plasma column asymmetrically wets the wall. Simulations of this phenomenon using finite element (FE) models have been conducted to reproduce the JET observation during locked and rotating asymmetric VDEs. Estimated sideways force, asymmetry ( I p asym ) and normalized asymmetry ( A p asym ) of plasma current, vertical position at different toroidal locations during the disruption and halo current asymmetry have been compared with measurements done at JET during upward AVDEs. The substantial match between experiments and simulations confirms the soundness of the assumptions. Furthermore, the same physical model applied to downward VDEs shows that divertor support and coils, together with the geometry of the limiting surfaces, considerably lessen asymmetric loads as experienced at JET after installing those components.

In Hybrid plasma operation in JET with its ITER-like wall (JET-ILW) it is found that n>1 tearing activity can significantly enhance the rate of on-axis peaking of tungsten impurities, which in turn significantly degrades discharge performance. Core n=1 instabilities can be beneficial in removing tungsten impurities from the plasma core (e.g. sawteeth or fishbones), but can conversely also degrade core confinement (particularly in combination with simultaneous n=3 activity). The nature of MHD instabilities in JET Hybrid discharges, with both its previous Carbon wall and subsequent JET-ILW, is surveyed statistically and the character of the instabilities is examined. Possible qualitative models for how the n>1 islands can enhance on-axis tungsten transport accumulation processes are presented., 19 pages, 17 figures. - Abstract
We present initial analyses and conclusions from plasma observations made during the reported “Mars plume event” of March–April 2012. During this period, multiple independent amateur observers detected a localized, high-altitude “plume” over the Martian dawn terminator, the cause of which remains to be explained. The estimated brightness of the plume exceeds that expected for auroral emissions, and its projected altitude greatly exceeds that at which clouds are expected to form. We report on in situ measurements of ionospheric plasma density and solar wind parameters throughout this interval made by Mars Express, obtained over the same surface region but at the opposing terminator. Measurements in the ionosphere at the corresponding location frequently show a disturbed structure, though this is not atypical for such regions with intense crustal magnetic fields. We tentatively conclude that the formation and/or transport of this plume to the altitudes where it was observed could be due in part to the result of a large interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) encountering the Martian system. Interestingly, we note that the only similar plume detection in May 1997 may also have been associated with a large ICME impact at Mars.

- Abstract
Cartagena is a city located at the Caribbean coast of Colombia, founded in 1533 by the Spanish. Its population consists over one million inhabitants, making it the fifth largest city in Colombia. Due to its strategic location, the port of Cartagena has grown into the largest port of the Caribbean coast, making it very important for the Colombian economy. The city is famous for its colonial centre ’Centro Historico’, that is a UNESCO world heritage site since 1984. Together with Centro, the peninsula of Bocagrande, Castillogrande and El Laguito, attract a lot of tourists thanks to its wide stretching beaches. The areas are however prone to flooding. The focus of this project is to provide a well-structured analysis of the flood problems in the neighbourhoods Centro, Bocagrande, Castillogrande and El Laguito, because of their major importance to the touristic, economic and cultural values of Cartagena. From this analysis an integrated conceptual solution is performed to improve the drainage and coastal protection system to ensure the future development of the city in a political and social desirable way. In the current situation the studied areas suffer from frequent flooding. The coastal protection and drainage system are insufficient. The surface level gradient is too small and the outlet drains are constructed as holes through the coastal protection, allowing the seawater to intrude during high water levels at sea. Flooding already occurs at mild conditions, such as spring tide or a single heavy rainfall event. These floods cause a lot of damage to properties and the infrastructure. The salt water intrusion causes damage to cars and buildings. Also hinder to all kind of commercial activities due to significant congestion, or even inaccessibility, results in a huge loss of revenue. Prognosis is that the frequency and intensity of these problems will increase in the future, due to the expected sea level rise and land subsidence. - Abstract
Since the installation of an ITER-like wall, the JET programme has focused on the consolidation of ITER design choices and the preparation for ITER operation, with a specific emphasis given to the bulk tungsten melt experiment, which has been crucial for the final decision on the material choice for the day-one tungsten divertor in ITER. Integrated scenarios have been progressed with the re-establishment of long-pulse, high-confinement H-modes by optimizing the magnetic configuration and the use of ICRH to avoid tungsten impurity accumulation. Stationary discharges with detached divertor conditions and small edge localized modes have been demonstrated by nitrogen seeding. The differences in confinement and pedestal behaviour before and after the ITER-like wall installation have been better characterized towards the development of high fusion yield scenarios in DT. Post-mortem analyses of the plasma-facing components have confirmed the previously reported low fuel retention obtained by gas balance and shown that the pattern of deposition within the divertor has changed significantly with respect to the JET carbon wall campaigns due to the absence of thermally activated chemical erosion of beryllium in contrast to carbon. Transport to remote areas is almost absent and two orders of magnitude less material is found in the divertor.

177. Galaxy Zoo Morphology and Photometric Redshifts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

- Abstract
It has recently been demonstrated that one can accurately derive galaxy morphology from particular primary and secondary isophotal shape estimates in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging catalog. This was accomplished by applying Machine Learning techniques to the Galaxy Zoo morphology catalog. Using the broad bandpass photometry of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in combination with with precise knowledge of galaxy morphology should help in estimating more accurate photometric redshifts for galaxies. Using the Galaxy Zoo separation for spirals and ellipticals in combination with Sloan Digital Sky Survey photometry we attempt to calculate photometric redshifts. In the best case we find that the root mean square error for Luminous Red Galaxies classified as ellipticals is as low as 0.0118. Given these promising results we believe better photometric redshift estimates for all galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey ($\sim$350 million) will be feasible if researchers can also leverage their derived morphologies via Machine Learning. - Abstract
Many of the skills and resources associated with botanic gardens and arboreta, including plant taxonomy, horticulture, and seed bank management, are fundamental to ecological restoration efforts, yet few of the world's botanic gardens are involved in the science or practice of restoration. Thus, we examined the potential role of botanic gardens in these emerging fields. We believe a reorientation of certain existing institutional strengths, such as plant-based research and knowledge transfer, would enable many more botanic gardens worldwide to provide effective science-based support to restoration efforts. We recommend botanic gardens widen research to include ecosystems as well as species, increase involvement in practical restoration projects and training practitioners, and serve as information hubs for data archiving and exchange.

Many viruses deliver their genomes into the host cell nucleus for replication. However, the size restrictions of the nuclear pore complex (NPC), which regulates the passage of proteins, nucleic acids, and solutes through the nuclear envelope, require virus capsid uncoating before viral DNA can access the nucleus. We report a microtubule motor kinesin-1-mediated and NPC-supported mechanism of adenovirus uncoating. The capsid binds to the NPC filament protein Nup214 and kinesin-1 light-chain Klc1/2. The nucleoporin Nup358, which is bound to Nup214/Nup88, interacts with the kinesin-1 heavy-chain Kif5c to indirectly link the capsid to the kinesin motor. Kinesin-1 disrupts capsids docked at Nup214, which compromises the NPC and dislocates nucleoporins and capsid fragments into the cytoplasm. NPC disruption increases nuclear envelope permeability as indicated by the nuclear influx of large cytoplasmic dextran polymers. Thus, kinesin-1 uncoats viral DNA and compromises NPC integrity, allowing viral genomes nuclear access to promote infection.

- Abstract
Three methods for detecting and characterizing structure in point data, such as that generated by redshift surveys, are described: classification using self-organizing maps, segmentation using Bayesian blocks, and density estimation using adaptive kernels. The first two methods are new, and allow detection and characterization of structures of arbitrary shape and at a wide range of spatial scales. These methods should elucidate not only clusters, but also the more distributed, wide-ranging filaments and sheets, and further allow the possibility of detecting and characterizing an even broader class of shapes. The methods are demonstrated and compared in application to three data sets: a carefully selected volume-limited sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey redshift data, a similarly selected sample from the Millennium Simulation, and a set of points independently drawn from a uniform probability distribution -- a so-called Poisson distribution. Scientific data sets continue to increase in both size and complexity. In the past, dedicated graphics systems at supercomputing centers were required to visualize large data sets, but as the price of commodity graphics hardware has dropped and its capability has increased, it is now possible, in principle, to view large complex data sets on a single workstation. To do this in practice, an investigator will need software that is written to take advantage of the relevant graphics hardware. The Viewpoints visualization package described herein is an example of such software. Viewpoints is an interactive tool for exploratory visual analysis of large, high-dimensional (multivariate) data. It leverages the capabilities of modern graphics boards (GPUs) to run on a single workstation or laptop. Viewpoints is minimalist: it attempts to do a small set of useful things very well (or at least very quickly) in comparison with similar packages today. Its basic feature set includes linked scatter plots with brushing, dynamic histograms, normalization and outlier detection/removal. Viewpoints was originally designed for astrophysicists, but it has since been used in a variety of fields that range from astronomy, quantum chemistry, fluid dynamics, machine learning, bioinformatics, and finance to information technology server log mining. Expanding upon the work of Way and Srivastava 2006 we demonstrate how the use of training sets of comparable size continue to make Gaussian process regression (GPR) a competitive approach to that of neural networks and other least-squares fitting methods. This is possible via new large size matrix inversion techniques developed for Gaussian processes (GPs) that do not require that the kernel matrix be sparse. This development, combined with a neural-network kernel function appears to give superior results for this problem. Our best fit results for the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Main Galaxy Sample using u,g,r,i,z filters gives an rms error of 0.0201 while our results for the same filters in the luminous red galaxy sample yield 0.0220. We also demonstrate that there appears to be a minimum number of training-set galaxies needed to obtain the optimal fit when using our GPR rank-reduction methods. We find that morphological information included with many photometric surveys appears, for the most part, to make the photometric redshift evaluation slightly worse rather than better. This would indicate that most morphological information simply adds noise from the GP point of view in the data used herein. In addition, we show that cross-match catalog results involving combinations of the Two Micron All Sky Survey, SDSS, and Galaxy Evolution Explorer have to be evaluated in the context of the resulting cross-match magnitude and redshift distribution. Commercial rice, Oryza sativa L., fields in southeastern Texas were sampled during 2003 and 2004, and visual samples were compared with sweep net samples. Fields were sampled at different stages of panicle development, times of day, and by different operators. Significant differences were found between perimeter and within field sweep net samples, indicating that samples taken 9 m from the field margin overestimate within field Oebalus pugnax (F.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) populations. Time of day did not significantly affect the number of O. pugnax caught with the sweep net; however, there was a trend to capture more insects during morning than afternoon. For all sampling methods evaluated during this study, O. pugnax was found to have an aggregated spatial pattern at most densities. When comparing sweep net with visual sampling methods, one sweep of the "long stick" and two sweeps of the "sweep stick" correlated well with the sweep net (r(2) = 0.639 and r(2) = 0.815, respectively). This relationship was not affected by time of day of sampling, stage of panicle development, type of planting or operator. Relative cost-reliability, which incorporates probability of adoption, indicates the visual methods are more cost-reliable than the sweep net for sampling O. pugnax.

- Abstract
Work is in progress to completely replace, in 2008/9, the existing JET CFC tiles with a configuration of plasma facing materials consistent with the ITER design. The ITER-like wall (ILW) will be created with a combination of beryllium ( Be), tungsten ( W), W-coated CFC and Be-coated inconel tiles, with the material depending on the local anticipated heat flux and geometry. It is part of an integrated package of JET enhancements whose aim is to develop an understanding of the ITER materials issues and develop the techniques required to operate with inductive and advanced scenarios as close as possible to ITER parameters. Over 4000 tiles will be replaced and the ILW will accommodate additional heating up to at least 50 MW for 10 s. This paper describes the scientific background to the project, the technical objectives, the material configuration selected, the R&D behind the practical realization of the objectives and the generic problems associated with the Be tiles ( power handling capacity and disruption induced eddy currents). One of the objectives is to maintain or improve the existing CFC tile power handling performance which has been achieved in most cases by hiding bolt holes, optimizing tile size and profile and introducing castellations on plasma facing surfaces., Conference: 11th International Workshop on Plasma-Facing Materials and Components for Fusion Applications. 189. Intentions and barriers to research activities among Australian and New Zealand anaesthetists: a Survey.

A voluntary, anonymous, cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 997 Fellows of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, using an electronic questionnaire. Details about their demographics, employment, research experience and barriers they had encountered, their perception about research and their future intentions to participate in research, were collected. The survey response rate was 24.6%. At the time of the survey, 29% of the survey respondents were involved in research. Respondents currently involved in research were more likely to be practising at a tertiary hospital, to have previously presented at conferences, to believe in the importance of research and to intend to undertake further research training (P <0.05). Time constraints were the most commonly cited reason for not currently performing research. Those who were involved in research spent about 6.3 more hours per week in public practice than those who were not (P=0.012) and had about 4.4 more hours per week of non-clinical time (P <0.001). In terms of barriers encountered during previous projects, 91% of the respondents cited methodological issues, which included complicated ethics approval processes, difficulty in coordinating teams or recruiting participants, non-compliant patients and difficulty in publishing. Sixty-three percent of those surveyed believed more exposure to research activities during training would increase the number of anaesthetists involved in research and scholarly activities. Through this survey, we have identified several areas that, if satisfactorily addressed, could enhance interest and participation in research amongst anaesthetists in Australia and New Zealand. 190. The Dynamics of the cD Clusters Abell 119 and Abell 133

A dynamical analysis of the structure of the clusters of galaxies Abell 119 and Abell 133 is presented, using new redshift data combined with existing data from the literature. We compare our results with those from the X-ray data for these clusters, and with those from radio data for the central cD galaxy in each cluster. A comparison of the mass estimate based on X-ray data and that obtained here after subgroups are eliminated shows them to be comparable. After the elimination of subgroups, 125 galaxy members in Abell 119 and 120 in Abell 133 give dispersions of 472 km/s and 735 km/s respectively. However, our dynamical analysis of the optical data shows little substructure in the velocity field of Abell 133, conflicting with what is seen in the Rosat X-ray map. Abell 119 seems to have multiple structures along the line of sight. We derive virial mass estimates of 3.05 X 10E14 Solar Masses for Abell 119 and 7.79 X 10E14 Solar Masses for Abell 133 within 1.5 Mpc, which agree well with the X-ray-derived masses within errors., 28 pages, 24 figures, 5 tables. 191. Statistics of AGN in Rich Clusters Revisited

Using spectrophotometry of a large sample of galaxies in 19 Abell Clusters, we have selected 42 candidate AGN by the criteria used by Dressler et.al. 1985 (DTS) in their analysis of the statistics of 22 AGN in 14 rich cluster fields, which are based on the equivalent width of [OII]3727, Hbeta, and [OIII]5007 emission. We have then discriminated AGN from HII region-like galaxies (hereafter HII galaxies) in the manner developed by Veilleux & Osterbrok 1987 using the additional information provided by Halpha and [NII]6583 or Halpha and [SII]6716+6731 emission, in order to test the reliability of the selection criteria used by DTS. We find that our sample is very similar to that of DTS before we discriminate AGN from HII galaxies, and would lead to similar conclusions. However, we find that their method inevitably mixes HII galaxies with AGN, even for the most luminous objects in our sample. Other authors have attempted to quantify the relative fraction of cluster to field AGN since the study of DTS (Hill & Oegerle 1993, Biviano et al. 1997) reaching similar conclusions, but using similar criteria to theirs to select AGN (or using the [OIII]5007/Hbeta flux ratio test that also mixes HII galaxies with AGN). Our sample of true AGN is left too small to reach statistically meaningful conclusions, therefore a new study with the more time-consuming method that includes the other lines will be required to quantify the true relative fraction of cluster to field AGN., 19 pages and 7 figures

192. Novel Methods for Predicting Photometric Redshifts from Broad Band Photometry using Virtual Sensors

- Abstract
We calculate photometric redshifts from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Main Galaxy Sample, The Galaxy Evolution Explorer All Sky Survey, and The Two Micron All Sky Survey using two new training-set methods. We utilize the broad-band photometry from the three surveys alongside Sloan Digital Sky Survey measures of photometric quality and galaxy morphology. Our first training-set method draws from the theory of ensemble learning while the second employs Gaussian process regression both of which allow for the estimation of redshift along with a measure of uncertainty in the estimation. The Gaussian process models the data very effectively with small training samples of approximately 1000 points or less. These two methods are compared to a well known Artificial Neural Network training-set method and to simple linear and quadratic regression. Our results show that robust photometric redshift errors as low as 0.02 RMS can regularly be obtained. We also demonstrate the need to provide confidence bands on the error estimation made by both classes of models. Our results indicate that variations due to the optimization procedure used for almost all neural networks, combined with the variations due to the data sample, can produce models with variations in accuracy that span an order of magnitude. A key contribution of this paper is to quantify the variability in the quality of results as a function of model and training sample. 193. Medical Emergency Team syndromes and an approach to their management

INTRODUCTION: Most literature on the medical emergency team (MET) relates to its effects on patient outcome. Less information exists on the most common causes of MET calls or on possible approaches to their management. METHODS: We reviewed the calling criteria and clinical causes of 400 MET calls in a teaching hospital. We propose a set of minimum standards for managing a MET review and developed an approach for managing common problems encountered during MET calls. RESULTS: The underlying reasons for initiating MET calls were hypoxia (41%), hypotension (28%), altered conscious state (23%), tachycardia (19%), increased respiratory rate (14%) and oliguria (8%). Infection, pulmonary oedema, and arrhythmias featured as prominent causes of all triggers for MET calls. The proposed minimum requirements for managing a MET review included determining the cause of the deterioration, documenting the events surrounding the MET, establishing a medical plan and ongoing medical follow-up, and discussing the case with the intensivist if certain criteria were fulfilled. A systematic approach to managing episodes of MET review was developed based on the acronym 'A to G': ask and assess; begin basic investigations and resuscitation, call for help if needed, discuss, decide, and document, explain aetiology and management, follow-up, and graciously thank staff. This approach was then adapted to provide a management plan for episodes of tachycardia, hypotension, hypoxia and dyspnoea, reduced urinary output, and altered conscious state. CONCLUSION: A suggested approach permits audit and standardization of the management of MET calls and provides an educational framework for the management of acutely unwell ward patients. Further evaluation and validation of the approach are required.

- Abstract
The Southern Abell Redshift Survey contains 39 clusters of galaxies with redshifts in the range 0.0 < z < 0.31 and a median redshift depth of z = 0.0845. SARS covers the region 0 < decl < -65 deg, R.A. < 5h, R.A. > 21h (while avoiding the LMC and SMC) with b > 40. Cluster locations were chosen from the Abell and Abell-Corwin-Olowin catalogs while galaxy positions were selected from the Automatic Plate Measuring Facility galaxy catalog with extinction-corrected magnitudes in the range 15 <= b_j < 19. SARS utilized the Las Campanas 2.5 m duPont telescope, observing either 65 or 128 objects concurrently over a 1.5 sq deg field.
