Post‐mounting courtship behaviour of a 6–8 mm long scatophagid fly Hydromyza livens which lays its eggs in yellow water lily (Nuphar lutea) is described and analysed. Enigmatic male–male encounters are described, along with lengthy “homosexual” mounting behaviour. A possible interpretation of both types of behaviour is given, with reference to their adaptive significance and the special problems encountered by males in locating females.

A rare water lily (Nymphaceae) fossil is reported from the Late Eocene (Priabonian) deposits from Cheile Baciului limestone quarry (Cluj-Napoca, Romania). The remains consist of a piece of rhizome and a few root impressions preserved on the bearing rock. The fossil was identified as belonging to Nymphaea cf. alba Linnaeus. The rhizome of this species has never been found together with root impressions in Transylvania, being a very rare find even in Central Europe.

The teaching image depicts sections of CT chest showing water lily sign and serpent sign. In the diagnosis of pulmonary hydatid disease, these signs are pathognomonic, these must be corroborated clinically, and early interventions should be done to avoid rupture of cysts leading to complications.

Water lily, a member of the Nymphaeaceae family, can be made into tea on the basis of outstanding fragrance characteristics and health care functions. In this study, 16 flavonoids were identified and quantified in tea infusions prepared from the petals of 33 water lily cultivars using HPLC-DAD and HPLC-ESI-MS/MS. The infusions were analyzed with HS-SPME coupled with GC-MS; 29 volatile compounds were detected, of which nine were found to be scent components. The cultivars were clustered into three clusters characterized according to scent components. The 'Conqueror' and 'Virginia' cultivars had the highest antioxidant activities. The concentrations of polyphenols and flavonoids showed significant positive correlations with antioxidant activity as measured by DPPH, ABTS(+), and FRAP assays. This study is valuable for a fuller understanding of this important tea and can also be used for the development of water lily.

We demonstrate that disk-shaped steel meshes coated with a superamphiphobic layer are able to float on water and on organic liquids. A coated disk-shaped steel mesh of 1 cm radius has a loading capacity of 17 mN in water and still remarkable 9 mN in n-hexadecane. Experimentally measured supporting forces and loading capacities agree well with theoretical predictions. Inspired by the giant water lily, pan-shaped “oil lilies” with even higher loading capacity and artificial oil striders carrying more than 10 times their own weight are designed. Even after the artificial devices are fully immersed into different liquids, they show self-draining properties due to capillary forces.

In the course of a hydatid cyst vital activity, the fibrous capsule calcifies and can also peel off (inner pressure in cysts decreases). Free fragments of the capsule in a cyst form the “water lily” sign or the “snake” sign (↑) which is specific for echinococcosis. Detection of daughter cysts is also a specific sign for E. granulosus.

Five anthocyanins have been isolated from red flowers of the water lily, Nymphaea × marliacea var. Escarboucle and identified by a combination of chromatography, electrospray MS and homo- and heteronuclear two-dimensional NMR techniques to be the novel pigment cyanidin 3-O-(2″-O-galloyl-6″-O-acetyl-β-galactopyranoside), and the 3-O-(2″-O-galloyl-6″-O-acetyl-β-galactopyranoside), 3-O-(6″-O-acetyl-β-galactopyranoside), 3-O-(2″-O-galloyl-β-galactopyranoside) and 3-O-β-galactopyranoside of delphinidin. The same five anthocyanins were also found in different proportions in both flowers and leaves of two other N. × marliacea cultivars with pink and white flowers, respectively. The chemotaxonomic significance of the acylated delphinidin derivatives is discussed.

Primary multiple intracerebral echinococcosis is a very rare disorder particularly in children. In this case report we discuss the details of clinical presentation and management in a young child. We also highlight for the first time non-iatrogenic 'water lily' appearance of the lesion on computed tomography of the head.

Nymphaea vanildae (Nymphaeaceae) is described and illustrated as a new species from the Caatinga region in Brazil, and placed in Nymphaea subg. Hydrocallis. This species is characterized by having nocturnal flowers, elliptic and delicate leaves, a clear distinction between the perianth and androecium, linear carpellary appendages and four or more series of proliferate pseudanthia, which distinguishes it from all species in the genus.

SUMMARY Multivariate analyses were used to study the morphological variation in two Nymphaea species, Nymphaea alba L. and Nymphaea Candida Presl. Three datasets consisting of qualitative, multistate discrete and continuous characters of water lily plants from 49 localities were analysed throughout The Netherlands. The analyses displayed a clear division between N. alba and N. Candida. The classification of the specimens with an intermediate morphology is less stable. The important parameters that account for the differentiation of the taxa were determined, and a comparison was made with those described in the literature. Frequency analyses and multivariate techniques revealed several characters which may be used as reliable identification rules.

Today's Paleo diet cookbooks might be missing a few pages. It seems that the early ancestors were more adventurous with their plant foods than people might expect, with roasted acorns, sedges and water lily seeds all on the menu, along with fish and meats. Archaeologists tend to emphasize the role of meat in ancient human diets, largely because the butchered bones of animals are so likely to be preserved at dig sites.

The research was conducted to investigate the potential of incorporation of Olu (white water lily or hairy water lily), Nymphaea pubescens Willd seeds flour with wheat flour in cookies and evaluation of their organoleptic properties. The proximate composition of Olu seed samples was determined. The control (wheat flour) and six cookie formulations replacing wheat flour with white water lily seed flour (20, 30, 40, 60, 80 & 100%) were prepared. The organoleptic attributes; colour, odour, taste, texture, sweetness and overall acceptability were evaluated on a Hedonic scale (7 – points) using an untrained panel. Proximate composition of Olu seeds included moisture 12.04 ± 0.06%, ash 0.54 ± 0.04%, fat 0.46 ± 0.05%, crude protein 2.35 ± 0.04%, crude fibre 0.58 ± 0.05% and carbohydrates 84.03 + 06%. The results showed that except for odour and texture, all the other sensory attributes of 30% substitution were scored as like slightly (5) or sometimes more acceptable than the control. However, the cookies with 40% and higher than 40% olu seed flour formulations were less acceptable than 30% formulation in all sensory attributes. According to the Friedman test, there was a significant difference of cookies in terms of colour, taste, sweetness and overall acceptability (p = 0.05).

Twelve accessions of water lily (Nymphaea spp.) differing in flower colour and opening time were selected from diverse locations of the water lily growing tracts of Thrissur district. These accessions were evaluated based on the width as well as length of leaf lamina, length of notch on lamina, length of mature flower bud, circumference of mature flower bud, diameter of fully opened flower, number of petals and number of stigmatic appendages in the flower. The study revealed that there was significant variability among the accessions for all the characters evaluated. DMRT was carried out and the accessions were grouped taking diameter of fully opened flower as well as the size of mature flower bud as the decisive characters for grouping. Significant correlations were observed between flower size and leaf size as well as flower size and length of mature flower bud. Hence, leaf size can be taken as an indicator of the flower size of the accession. Selection programmes based on length of lamina will be effective in improving the population, since PCV, GCV, H2 and GG were the highest for this character.

Hydatid disease (HD) is a common parasitic infestation in some developing countries. Hydatid disease may affect many organs in the body, but the most affected are the liver and lungs. Hepatic and pulmonary HD is relatively easier to diagnose because of the frequency of pathognomic features and its order in the differential diagnosis list. When HD is located in uncommon sites, it is difficult to recognize even in endemic areas. The "water-lily sign" is a pathognomic sign for HD and mostly described especially after puncture or percutaneous treatment of the cyst. In this case, we observed the water-lily sign in spinal HD, which was not described before for spinal cases but for soft tissues.

Each moving objects database represents the trajectory and speed of moving objects. In all moving objects reprentations the spatial and the temporal extents of the objects depend on each other. This is in contrast to some earlier data models, such as, the rectangles and the Worboys data models, that had spatial and temporal extents that were independent of each other. Therefore, the earlier data models could only represent objects that appear and disappear suddenly. Hence they cannot represent continuously moving objects.

The purpose of this research is "realization of the user interface that is kind to person". We live together with nature. Therefore, it is effective to use natural phenomena for the user-interface. To explore the new user-interface based on natural phenomena and so on, the data of three categories ("Accustomed manners friendly", "natural phenomenon", "Movement, behavior of plants and animals") were gathered by field survey. The gathered data were classified and structured. New user-interface that combines many user-interfaces (picture scroll interface, water lily interface, fish shoal interface, and so on) was constructed. This paper presents the example of four user-interfaces that are selected from collected data.

En base a los inventarios fitosociológicos levantados en 3humedales de América del Sur (Llanos de Moxos y Pantanal, Bolivia; Llanos del Orinoco, Venezuela)damos a conocer semejanzas y diferencias en la composición de comunidades vegetales. Hardy water lilies (Nymphaea cultivar ‘Marliacea carnea’) were grown out-of-doors at Phoenix, Arizona in sunken metal stock tanks located within open-top, clear plastic-wall, CO2-enrichment chambers; two were maintained at a CO2 concentration of 650 ppm and two were maintained at the ambient CO2 concentration of ∼350 ppm. Over a 5-month period different plant properties were evaluated, each one of which showed some degree of stimulation or enhancement under CO2-enriched conditions. In particular, net photosynthesis was increased by ∼49%, leaf size by 18%, and integrated leaf numberXlife span by 116%, which resulted in a whole-plant biomass enhancement of 270%. After 21 months, differences between treatments were not quite as dramatic; but at the conclusion of the experiment, the rhizomes in the CO2-enriched treatment were still more than two-and-a-half times greater in total biomass than their ambient-grown counterparts.

Water-lily (Nymphaea marliac) plants were grown out doors in 570-1 stock tanks contained in plastic-walled, open-topped CO2-enrichment chambers continously supplied with either 640 or 340 (ambient) μl CO21−1 of air. Net photosynthesis (Pn) of water-lily leaves in each CO2 treatment was measured hourly between 0800 and 1600 h MST on 26 October and 10 and 24 November 1987. Air temperature and net solar radiation were measured at the same time. The 3 days on which Pn was measured provided an air temperature range of 10.3–33.2°C and a net solar radiation range of 30–659 W m−2. Significant linear relationships wre established between Pn and air temperature and Pn and net solar radiation for both CO2 treatments. Significant interactive effects of CO2 and air temperature and CO2 and net solar radiation were also found to affect Pn. In conditions unfavorable for Pn (low light and low temperature), there was no difference in Pn rate between the two CO2 treatments. In conditions that were favorable for Pn (high light and high temperature), however, Pn in the 640 μl CO2l−1 of air treatment was as much as 60% greater than in the ambient CO2 treatment.

The study is aimed at evaluating nutritional composition, antinutritional factors and elemental analysis of three parts (roots sample RS, seed sample SS and leave sample LS) of Nymphaea lotus (water lily) using standard methods. The plant parts were analyzed for the content of crude lipid, crude fiber, crude proteins, ash, moisture and carbohydrate was estimated by difference. Crude lipids and carbohydrate were higher in seeds, while crude protein was exceptionally higher in the leaves. There are moderate amount of both antinutritional factors and heavy metals. The vitamin E content was high in the seeds sample while other vitamins determined were present in all plant parts respectively. Considering the potential nutritive and health benefits of the underutilized water lily, it is suggested that utilization of water lily should be encouraged so as to ameliorate the problem of malnutrition, since it is rich in nutrients. There are 3 radiologic signs considered diagnostic of ruptured pulmonary hydatid cyst (PHC): perivesicular pneumocyst, double-domed arch, and water lily. Apart from these, every localized radiologic density seen in any patient more than 3 years of age in an endemic area should be looked on as a possible ruptured hydatid cyst (HC). Nevertheless, situations in which the diagnosis of ruptured PHC is difficult are far from being rare in countries of high endemicity. Thus a preliminary bronchoscopy is a perfectly justifiable step in the diagnostic work-up. Herein, we report 3 selected cases of Iraqi patients with ruptured PHC in whom definitive diagnoses were made with the use of the flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB).
