In this paper, we proposed an IoT based solar-powered smart waste management system which is suitable for any kind city or town in both developed and developing countries that can ensure proper collection, transportation, and disposal of household and industrial waste with real-time remote monitoring. To maintain the green and clean environment around us, precise collection and disposal of garbage in a regular fashion are necessary. The primary goal of this research work is to provide a complete smart solution for waste collection and disposal hence ensuring a comfortable environment. The proposed system enables real-time remote monitoring of solar-powered several smart bins located in different points in the city which are connected to the control station through long-range (LoRa) communication device and also supervises the waste collector activities like collection and disposal time using Automated Vehicles Locating System (AVLS).

Plastic waste has become one of the most worrying global environmental problem. Increased population, urbanization, and consumptive lifestyles have increase the use of plastic. Poorly waste management system and unsupportive behavior are the factors of plastic waste problem. According to Giddens, it can be seen that the plastic problem is a consequence of modernity. Capitalism which emphasizes packaging is one of the consequences of modernity. Innovative and efficient production processes are believed can develop new economies that use a lot of recycled materials. With Giddens framework as well, the behavior of plastic producers and consumers should be able to move from unconscious motivation to practical consciousness, and discursive consciousness. Through this can be expected to form behavior of the use of plastics that are more environmentally friendly.

A comprehensive study of the production and consumption waste management system was carried out with an emphasis on urgent problems in this area in the transport and construction sectors. The concept of ensuring the ecological safety of the “man — natural environment” system has been formed. Sources of ecological danger in the course of the reference with a waste in transport and building sphere are defined. Ecologically safe handling of a waste and maximisations of repeated application of a resource component (secondary resources) with a view of involving in economic circulation are applied for the first time to system studying modern research methods: the SWOT-analysis and the Preliminary analysis of Hazard». Implemented the scientific substantiation of methods, criteria, levels and system of requirements of maintenance of ecological safety in studied spheres of economic activities at all stages of the reference with a waste and secondary resources with a view of minimisation of formation of a waste and the maximum involving of their resource component in economic circulation is carried out. The system analysis of an ecological admissibility, technical possibility of use of resource potential of a waste as secondary resources in considered fields of activity for their repeated application is carried out at production, works, energy. By results of research practical measures on perfection of system of requirements ecologically safe handling of a waste are offered, levels of ecological safety of settlements concerning influence of a dangerous waste are generated.

In the current European context, member states have increasingly effective and efficient concerns in the field of sustainable waste management. To this effect, the European Commission has adopted a package of measures in order to stimulate Europe's transition to a circular economy, which first involves efficient waste management and the consolidation of good practices in the field. Thus, Romania will have to comply with the new European rigors and improve its own waste management system. This paper aims to identify and analyse a set of good practices in the field of packaging waste in order to design one that is suitable for Romania. These examples are national models for organizing the management of packaging waste through deposit or storage systems. The main objective of these systems is to increase the recycling rates of packaging waste in accordance with European requirements, as well as the sustainable development of the waste sector, without causing economic losses to any of the stakeholders, namely business, population, environment and public authorities. The paper intends to conceptualize a specific model for the Romanian economy, respectively a model of organization and operation of the deposit system in the field of packaging waste that could be used by the competent authorities and the business environment.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry provides an appeal to waste banks to use online systems in managing waste bank activities. The online system referred to is the online waste management system through the banksampah.id account. However, the level of activity of garbage banks in using the online system is relatively low (36.46%). Besides, in 2019, the Bandung City DLH has used banksampah.id as an application in evaluating the performance of waste banks. Therefore, this study was conducted aiming to evaluate the level of usability of banksampah.id so that it can be known aspects of banksampah.id that need to be improved. Evaluation of usability level is carried out using the Importance Performance Analysis (IPA) method. The usability evaluation results show that there are 7 usability attributes in the "Concentrate Here" category, 10 usability attributes in the "Keep Up The Good Work" category, 8 usability attributes in the "Low Priority" category and 9 usability attributes in the "Possible Overkill" category. Improvements to usability banksampah.id focus on 7 attributes categorized as "Concentrate Here" namely (1) availability of procedures for the use of various applications, (2) procedures for using applications that have been available easily understood by users, (3) completeness of customer profile, (4) availability of up-to-date customer data, (5) speed in data processing, (6) availability of communication features between Garbage Banks, and (7) availability of communication features between Garbage Banks and collectors.

Pasar Ujungberung merupakan salahsatu pasar tradisional di Kota Bandung yang aktivitas jual-belinya masih ramai dan berdampak pada kebutuhan pengelolaan sampah yang lebih baik. Agar dapat dilakukan pengelolaan sampah yang baik maka dibutuhkan data timbulan yang lebih presisi. Paper ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui timbulan sampah tersebut melalui pelaksanaan prosedur sampling sesuai dengan SNI selama 8 hari berturut-turut. Jumlah keseluruhan kios yang aktif digunakan untuk jual-beli adalah 565 kios dengan jumlah responden untuk sampling dan kuesioner sebanyak 85 kios. Rerata timbulan sampah tertinggi dan terendah masing-masing berasal dari kios makanan jadi (3,16 kg/hari) dan kios hasil bumi (0,02 kg/hari). Berdasarkan unit yang mungkin berpengaruh pada timbulan sampahnya, maka secara rerata timbulan sampah perhari di Pasar Ujungberung adalah 0,464 kg/kios, 0,109 kg/m2 kios, 0,240 kg/karyawan, 0,047 kg/jam operasional. Walaupun komposisi jenis sampah yang dihasilkan dari setiap kios berbeda, plastik, organik dan kertas merupakan tiga jenis sampah yang diprediksi dominan dihasilkan dari Pasar Ujungberung. Berdasarkan observasi lansung dan wawancara diketahui bahwa sebagian besar pedagang membuang sampahnya dengan menggunakan kresek plastik ke lokasi penampungan sampah terdekat. Data timbulan sampah yang diperoleh dari studi ini dapat digunakan untuk memprediksi timbulan sampah di pasar tradisional lain sehingga perencanaan pengelolaan sampah dapat dilakukan dengan lebih baik.

The cluster analysis of the regions of Ukraine by economic, environmental and social indicators characterizing regional economic development and development of the waste management system is carried out in the paper. Three groups of regions characterized by similar features are identified. The average values of the studied indicators by separate clusters are determined. It was established, for example, that the regions from the first cluster are characterized by a low level of the waste management system development, in the regions from the second group modern technologies of waste management is more actively introducing in comparison with other regions. Discriminant analysis was conducted. The results of the analysis show that regions are differentiated mostly by five indicators: average tariff for waste management for the population, financing of waste management system, area of landfills and damps, amount of waste collection per capita, the rate of waste recycling sector development. The article outlines the current problems and contradictions in the waste management system in Ukraine from the standpoint of ensuring the ecological stability of the Eastern European region. The accepted paradigm of creating a recirculating economy is provided by a territorially balanced waste management system in the regions of Ukraine. The coefficient of territorial provision of utilization capacities has been proposed and tested, which allowed the evaluation of their existing potential integrally, and determined the formed regional disproportions between waste generation and utilization. In order to solve the existing imbalances in Ukraine in a comprehensive way, the stage of transition to recirculating recycling technologies of waste is proposed. The mathematical formalization of the problem of waste management in Ukraine specifies the space-time parameters of solving the problem of the system balance and provides the variability of input and output parameters for solving empirical problems.

This paper compiles results of the research project 'The Use of Life Cycle Assessment Tools for the Development of Integrated Waste Management Strategies for Cities and Regions with Rapid Growing Economies', in short: LCA-IWM (for more: www.lca-iwm,net), The project, which runs from September 2002 until August 2005, is financially supported by the European Commission, It is part of the Fifth Framework Programme.Some municipal waste management scenarios for Kaunas (Lithuania), Wroclaw (Poland), Xanthi (Greece), Nitra (Slovakia) and Reus (Spain) was created and assessed to compare impact on environmental, economical and social sustainability, The chosen waste management scenarios can be understood like stepped evolution of waste management system, i.e, the next scenarios is an extension of previous scenario, The first scenarios for every city correspond to the situation in the current waste management systems, the next scenarios include not only landfilling, but also increased rates of separate collection, mechanical-biological pre-treatment and incineration. At the Conclusion the best Scenarios regarding environmental and economical sustainability is pointed.

IT Governance has provided hope in human life, especially waste management and environmental cleanliness services. The role of IT becomes very important when people want services that are fast, accurate and relevant. Technology using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has provided opportunities and made it possible to interact easily. The purpose of this research is to provide a GIS for the city environmental and sanitation services in order to provide good services in creating a clean environment. The research method uses the system analysis method with a spiral model approach in system design. The results of the design of GIS have been able to improve the performance of waste management in the city of Makassar.

The issue of waste management in terms of environmental protection is one of the important problems facing humanity, especially in the large agglomeration areas, and in the rural area, the interests are more limited. The present paper presents theoretical aspects regarding the implementation of an integrated waste management system in the rural area.

Engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) are being increasingly produced for various applications. In order to evaluate potential environmental impacts, knowledge on their environmental releases is needed. In this study, we present a country-specific assessment of the flows to the environment from production to end-of-life of nano-Ag, -TiO2 and -ZnO within Europe. This paper includes a revision of the different applications in which the ENMs are used and their shares in Europe, as well as the distributions of ENM production, manufacturing and consumption over European countries using a surrogate-variable approach. Material flow analysis was used to quantify the probability distributions of ENM releases from each lifecycle stage to air, water and soil. Results show that the main applications of nano-TiO2 and nano-ZnO are in cosmetics and personal care products, while nano-Ag is mainly used for electronic printing. While the production of these ENMs takes place in a limited number of countries, manufacturing and consumption are more homogeneously spread over Europe. In general, sludge-treated soil is the environmental compartment receiving the highest releases, while recycling is a technical compartment in the waste management system receiving significant ENM shares, especially for nano-Ag. Due to different waste management systems and sizes of countries, releases to surface water and soils normalised by the areas of these compartments vary by several orders of magnitude between countries, showing the relevance of a country-specific model. The results of this study can be used for the country-specific assessment of environmental fate and risks of ENMs and ENM-containing products.

Bangladesh is a low-lying riverine country. Unplanned growth of urban population causes audacious generation of solid wastes and strives immense pressure on existing services and environment. At present days, urban solid waste management is considered as most immediate and demanding environmental problems vexing Municipal authorities or urban governments in developing Asian countries like Bangladesh. Cities are now clashing with the serious problems of high amount of waste. The traditional concepts and inferior technologies of collecting waste are becoming incomplete as well as incompetent resulting more than half of the engendered solid wastes remain uncollected, disposed of regionally, forging the environmental view of cities quite murky and disheartening for the future. In waste management system, Germany is a role model for the world and the New German Closed-Cycle management is aiming to curve the waste management into resource management. The main intent of this research study is to categories in the solid wastes, discussing the issues of waste generation, a popular method for solid waste management, gasification schematic and waste-management model for Bangladesh. This study also explains Germany Closed-Cycle Management Act as well as waste treatment facilities, recovery, and disposal rate in Germany. Germany keeps very high-quality to preserve soil, air and water from the emissions integrated with waste storage and treatment.

This paper presents the use of automated machine learning for solving a practical problem of a real-life Smart Waste Management system. In particular, the focus of the paper is on the problem of detection (i.e., binary classification) of emptying of a recycling container using sensor measurements. Numerous data-driven methods for solving the problem are investigated in a realistic setting where most of the events are not actual emptying. The investigated methods include the existing manually engineered model and its modification as well as conventional machines learning algorithms. The use of machine learning allows improving the classification accuracy and recall of the existing manually engineered model from $86.8\%$ and $47.9\%$ to $99.1\%$ and $98.2\%$ , respectively, when using the best performing solution. This solution uses a Random Forest classifier on a set of features based on the filling level at different given time spans. Finally, compared to the baseline existing manually engineered model, the best performing solution also improves the quality of forecasts for emptying time of recycling containers.

Traditional waste management system operates based on daily schedule which is highly inefficient and costly. The existing recycle bin has also proved its ineffectiveness in the public as people do not recycle their waste properly. With the development of Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), the traditional waste management system can be replaced with smart sensors embedded into the system to perform real time monitoring and allow for better waste management. The aim of this research is to develop a smart waste management system using LoRa communication protocol and TensorFlow based deep learning model. LoRa sends the sensor data and Tensorflow performs real time object detection and classification. The bin consists of several compartments to segregate the waste including metal, plastic, paper, and general waste compartment which are controlled by the servo motors. Object detection and waste classification is done in TensorFlow framework with pre-trained object detection model. This object detection model is trained with images of waste to generate a frozen inference graph used for object detection which is done through a camera connected to the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ as the main processing unit. Ultrasonic sensor is embedded into each waste compartment to monitor the filling level of the waste. GPS module is integrated to monitor the location and real time of the bin. LoRa communication protocol is used to transmit data about the location, real time and filling level of the bin. Despite their contributions to solving specific waste management issues by collecting recyclables, waste-pickers are maligned when waste management policies are formulated. The purpose of this study was to assess and expose the beneficial economic and environmental protection role of waste pickers and how they can be integrated into the solid waste management system. The study imposed both quantitative and qualitative data collection method (mixed method research). The primary data were sourced through face-to-face in-depth interviews with operators and managers of the dumpsites. The selected waste pickers were asked to fill a questionnaire that brought to the fore all that their work entails from the number of recyclables recovered to their occupational health and safety. Results show that the volume of waste retrieved from the waste stream at the three dumpsites in Accra metropolis is less than 1% per annum. The waste pickers, if integrated into the waste management system and motivated, could help in reviving the recycling industry which would reduce the pressure on virgin materials and the environment. It is also their source of livelihood. The benefits are mutual.

The article is devoted to the study of the existing packaging waste management system in Chernihiv region. It is revealed that the dynamics of waste generation of packaging is changeable against the background of the general tendency to growth, which creates environmental problems of their accumulation and economic problems of excessive resource consumption. The level of recycling of packaging waste does not accord the national and European requirements. It is established that the main problem in this area is the lack of legal framework that would determine the organizational and legal framework for an effective packaging waste management system, clearly classify this concept and delineate areas of responsibility between individual entities.

The colossal increase in environmental pollution and degradation, resulting in ecological imbalance, is an eye-catching concern in the contemporary era. Moreover, the proliferation in the development of smart cities across the globe necessitates the emergence of a robust smart waste management system for proper waste segregation based on its biodegradability. The present work investigates a novel approach for waste segregation for its effective recycling and disposal by utilizing a deep learning strategy. The YOLOv3 algorithm has been utilized in the Darknet neural network framework to train a self-made dataset. The network has been trained for 6 object classes (namely: cardboard, glass, metal, paper, plastic and organic waste). Moreover, for comparative assessment, the detection task has also been performed using YOLOv3-tiny to validate the competence of the YOLOv3 algorithm. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed YOLOv3 methodology yields satisfactory generalization capability for all the classes with a variety of waste items.

Waste management is a systematic, comprehensive, sustainable activity that includes waste reduction and handling. The existence of waste can have a health effect on the environment and society if it is not handled seriously. The influence of waste on the environment that can damage the aesthetics of the environment and for health can indirectly be in the form of vector-borne diseases that breed in the waste. This study was conducted to determine the description of the waste management system in Soe City. The research method used is a descriptive survey where the research is carried out with the main aim of making a picture or description of a situation objectively. The number of samples in this study were 26 TPS and 1 TPA and the managers of each TPS and TPA. The analysis used is univariate analysis. Based on the results of the study, it showed that of the total 26 TPS in Soe City, 3 (11.5%) were in the good category, while 23 (88.5%) were in the bad category. The waste management system that starts from waste sorting is 26 (100.0%) TPS is bad in sorting waste, bad waste collection is 17 (65.4%) while good is 9 TPS (34.6%). The process of transporting waste from TPS to TPA is still bad at 17 (65.4%) TPS and 9 (34.6%) TPS have good category, for waste processing from 26 TPS no one does waste processing, and final waste processing Soe City TPA is still bad at destroying waste. The Soe City Government is expected to pay attention to waste management issues as well as support and facilitate the solid waste management system in Soe City, in order to reduce the negative impact on environmental health and public health

The development of the waste management system in the European Union is studied. The waste management practices in a range of the EU countries are analyzed. The main principles of solving the problem of managing waste in the EU are revealed. A comparison of indicators for waste management in the EU and Ukraine is provided. The dominant European trends among other areas of waste—“zero waste” and “circular economy”—are identified. The regulatory framework for waste management developed in Ukraine as a step towards international environmental safety standards is discussed.

The article considers the main issues that exist in the waste management system at the regional level. Study revealed extremely unsatisfactory condition of this system, significant territorial disparities in the formation and accumulation of waste, low level of their utilization. The comparative analysis of a number of indicators showed significant differences in the structure of waste in a particular region compared to the national average – by sources of generation, by industry structure, by categories of materials. The scale of waste concentration per capita in the studied area is 30 times lower, than in Ukraine on average and the average level of waste accumulation per unit area is 67,5 times lower than in Ukraine on average. That, however, does not reduce the threat to the environmentally sustainable development of the region. Solving waste management problems at the level of a particular region is offered through the implementation of the Regional Waste Management Plan., У статті розглянуто основні питання і проблеми, що існують у системі поводження з відходами на регіональному рівні. Виявлено дуже незадовільний стан цієї системи, суттєві територіальні диспропорції в утворенні та накопиченні відходів, низький рівень їх утилізації. Порівняльний аналіз багатьох показників продемонстрував суттєві відмінності в структурі відходів окремого регіону порівняно із середньонаціональними показниками – за джерелами утворення, за галузевою структурою, за категоріями матеріалів. Масштаби концентрації відходів на душу населення в досліджуваній сфері є в 30 разів нижчим, а середній рівень накопичення відходів на одиницю території – у 67,5 раза нижчими, ніж в Україні, що, проте, не знижує рівень загрози для екологічно збалансованого розвитку регіону. Вирішення проблем у сфері поводження з відходами на рівні окремої області пропонується через реалізацію Регіонального плану управління відходами.

Razvojem društva i porastom broja stanovništva dolazi do onečišćenja okoliša. Svaka aktivnost proizvodi otpad koji često nije zbrinut na pravilan način. Takav otpad predstavlja opasnost ne samo za okoliš već i za zdravlje ljudi, ali i svih živih bića. Kako bi se otpad zbrinuo na pravilan način potrebno je poznavanje samog sustava gospodarenja otpadom. Stoga je provedeno istraživanje kojim se ispitalo znanje studentske populacije o sustavu gospodarenja otpadom u Republici Hrvatskoj. U istraživanju je sudjelovao 281 ispitanik. Većina ispitanih studenata u anketi je svoje znanje u samoprocjeni ocijenila dobrim do vrlo dobrim, dok rezultati stvarnog znanja govore da je njihovo znanje dovoljno do dobro. Social development and population growth cause environmental pollution. Every activity produces waste that isn`t often disposed of properly. Such waste poses a threat not only to the environment but also to human health and all living beings. In order to dispose of waste properly, it is necessary to know the system of waste management. Therefore, research was conducted in which we wanted to find out how much student population knew about waste management system in the Republic of Croatia. The research included 281 respondents. Most of the students that were interviewed self-assessed their knowledge and rated it as good to very good, while the results of actual knowledge showed that their knowledge was sufficient to good.

The paper discusses project of constructing a biogas plant for biological treatment of municipal biowaste in the Virovitica-Podravina and surrounding counties. In Virovitica-Podravina County the total amount of waste generated is 21,690 tons, which corresponds to 256 kg of waste per capita per year. If the neighbouring counties are included, the amount of waste generated increases to 190,172 t. In order to determine the potential of separately collected biowaste only kitchen (30.9%) and garden waste (5.7%) are included. The construction of the plant will significantly contribute to the improvement of the current waste management system and the reduction of biodegradable waste disposal. It is expected that the planned biowaste treatment plant could process about 12,948 t of biowaste per year, which corresponds to a plant capacity of 906 kWel. Total electricity production would be 7,251 MWel and 7,976 MWth based on an average of 8,000 operating hours per year.

Organic waste represents an opportunity and a challenge for policy decision makers and lately the attention has been focusing on community composting practices identifying the environmental and/or economic aspects. Evidence of citizens’ attitudes and preferences is scarce, and this paper aims to fill this gap. The results of a contingent valuation survey in three councils of the Province of Siena, Tuscany (Italy) are reported along with an extended cost-benefit analysis. Results echo previous findings that GHGs emissions and money-saving for all municipalities are positive and encouraging; moreover, our study proves that citizens are keen to switch to the community recycling composter system. Citizens present heterogeneous preferences and accordingly to the current waste management system they might need a small financial compensation to switch in favour of the local community system.
