Abstract

Most host organisms undergo metabolic changes in response to pathogens, environmental cues or simply to boost their immunity. Metabolic modulation has therefore been exploited by both host and pathogens to outwit the other during host–pathogen interactions. Recent studies have revealed that a growing number of metabolites and metabolic processes in crustaceans are crucial in host–pathogen interactions. Here, we reviewed recent work on metabolic changes during immune response of crustaceans and the metabolic reprogramming that takes place in the host induced by pathogens, environmental cues or as a host strategy to withstand these changes or clear the pathogen. In aquaculture crustaceans, limited studies exist on this subject; hence, we will also highlight themes for possible future research on metabolite reprogramming and how this strategy can be leveraged to improve sustainable aquaculture and enhance crustaceans' response to pathogens and environmental changes. 184. Boosted H+Intercalation Enables Ultrahigh Rate Performance of the δ-MnO2Cathode for Aqueous Zinc Batteries

Abstract

H+intercalation, as a critical battery chemistry, enables electrodes’ high rate performance due to the fast diffusion kinetics of H+. In this work, more water molecules are introduced into δ-MnO2by the protonation of δ-MnO2with abundant oxygen vacancies. Benefiting from the structure with a close arrangement of water molecules in interlayers, the Grotthuss transport of proton is achieved in the energy storage of the δ-MnO2cathode. As a result, the δ-MnO2cathode exhibits an ultrahigh rate performance with a capacity of 368.1 mAh g–1at 0.5 A g–1and 83.4 mAh g–1at 50 A g–1, which has a capacity retention of 73% after 1100 cycles at 10 A g–1. The study of the storage mechanism reveals that the Grotthuss intercalation of proton predominates the storage process, which empowers the cathode with high rate performance.

Abstract

Abstract Background Hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α (HNF4α), a liver-specific transcription factor, plays a significant role in liver-specific functions. However, its functions are poorly understood in the regulation of the inflammatory response. In order to obtain a genomic view of HNF4α in this context, microarray analysis was used to probe the expression profile of an inflammatory response induced by cytokine stimulation in a model of HNF4α knock-down in HepG2 cells. Results The expression of over five thousand genes in HepG2 cells is significantly changed with the dramatic reduction of HNF4α concentration compared to the cells with native levels of HNF4α. Over two thirds (71%) of genes that exhibit differential expression in response to cytokine treatment also reveal differential expression in response to HNF4α knock-down. In addition, we found that a number of HNF4α target genes may be indirectly mediated by an ETS-domain transcription factor ELK1, a nuclear target of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). Conclusion The results indicate that HNF4α has an extensive impact on the regulation of a large number of the liver-specific genes. HNF4α may play a role in regulating the cytokine-induced inflammatory response. This study presents a novel function for HNF4α, acting not only as a global player in many cellular processes, but also as one of the components of inflammatory response in the liver.

195. Short-term effects of outdoor air pollution on acute ischaemic stroke occurrence: a case-crossover study in Tianjin, China.

Abstract

Objective: Ambient air pollution is associated with ischaemic stroke incidence. However, most of the previous studies used stroke-related hospital admission rather than stroke onset itself. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between ambient air pollutant exposures and acute ischaemic stroke based on the timing of symptom onset.Methods: A time-stratified, case-crossover analysis was performed among 520 patients who had ischaemic stroke admitted to the Second Hospital of Tianjin Medical University (Tianjin, China) between 1 April 2018 and 31 March 2019 (365 days). Daily air pollutant concentrations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter 2.5 µm, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter 10 µm (PM10), sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone were obtained from fixed-site monitoring stations. We used conditional logistic regression to estimate OR and 95% CI corresponding to an increase in IQR of each air pollutant after adjusting for the effects of temperature and relative humidity.Results: Overall, a higher risk of ischaemic stroke was found between April and September. During this period PM10 was associated with an increased risk of ischaemic stroke (1-day lag: OR=1.49, 95% CI 1.09 to 2.02; 3-day mean: OR=1.58, 95% CI 1.09 to 2.29) among patients between 34 and 70 years old. Positive associations were also observed between PM10 (1-day lag: OR=1.51, 95% CI 1.10 to 2.07; 3-day mean: OR=1.57, 95% CI 1.08 to 2.29), ozone (1-day lag: OR=1.83, 95% CI 1.16 to 2.87; 3-day mean: OR=1.90, 95% CI 1.06 to 3.42) and ischaemic stroke occurrence among those with hyperlipidaemia.Conclusion: Our results suggest that air pollution is associated with a higher risk of ischaemic stroke in younger people or people with hyperlipidemia. Abstract

The Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a critical role in influencing regional and global climate, via both thermal and dynamical mechanisms. Meanwhile, as the largest high-elevation part of the cryosphere outside the polar regions, with vast areas of mountain glaciers, permafrost and seasonally frozen ground, the TP is characterized as an area sensitive to global climate change. However, meteorological stations are sparely and biased distributed over the TP, owing to the harsh environmental conditions, high elevations, complex topography, and heterogeneous surfaces. Moreover, due to the weak representative of the stations, atmospheric conditions and the local land-atmosphere coupled system over the TP as well as its effects on surrounding regions are poorly quantified. This paper presents a long-term (2005-2016) dataset of hourly land-atmosphere interaction observations from an integrated high-elevation, cold region observation network, which is composed of six field observation and research platforms on the TP. In-situ observations, at the hourly resolution, consisting of measurements of micrometeorology, surface radiation, eddy covariance (EC), and soil temperature and soil water content profiles. Meteorological data were monitored by automatic weather station (AWS) or a planetary boundary layer (PBL) observation system composed of multiple meteorological element instruments. Multilayer soil hydrothermal data were recorded to capture vertical variations in soil temperature and water content and to study the freeze-thaw processes. In addition, to capture the high-frequency vertical exchanges of energy, momentum, water vapor and carbon dioxide within the atmospheric boundary layer, an EC system consisting of an ultrasonic anemometer and an infrared gas analyzer was installed at each station. The release of these continuous and long-term datasets with hourly time resolution represents a leap forward in scientific data sharing over the TP, and it has been partially used in the past to assist in understanding key land surface processes. This dataset is described here comprehensively for facilitating a broader multidisciplinary community by enabling the evaluation and development of existing or new remote sensing algorithms as well as geophysical models for climate research and forecasting.
