The polarization switching pathway plays a key role in deciding the magnitudes of the spontaneous polarization and the coercive electric field, which can be used to realize controllable ferroelectric properties. In this paper, by first-principles calculations, we reveal how the spontaneous polarization (Ps) and the switching barrier (Eb) of orthorhombic HfO2 (o-HfO2) respond to various lattice strains depending on two kinds of switching pathways, i.e., the shift-across (SA) pathway and the shift-inside pathway. It is revealed that the existence of the two pathways is most likely dependent on the interface termination of o-HfO2, and the SA pathway exhibits higher critical values of both Ps and Eb. By applying lattice strains on o-HfO2 (001) and (010) planes, a ferroelectric–paraelectric phase transition from the polar Pca21 to the nonpolar Pbcn can be observed. Importantly, the variation trends of Ps and Eb under the same lattice strains are found to be highly different depending on the switching pathways. However, by carefully designing the interfacial tail atoms, strain engineering can efficiently improve Eb and Ps for both pathways in o-HfO2 films. Molecules interacting with CasL (MICALs) are critical mediators of cell motility that act by cytoskeleton rearrangement. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the regulation of cancer cell invasion remain elusive. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of one member of MICALs, i.e., MICALL2, in the invasion and function of ovarian cancer cells. We showed by bioinformatics analysis that MICALL2 expression was significantly higher in tissues of advanced-stage ovarian cancer and associated with poor overall survival of patients. MICALL2 was strongly correlated with the infiltration of multiple types of immune cells and T-cell exhaustion markers. Moreover, enrichment analyses showed that MICALL2 was involved in the tumor-related matrix degradation pathway. Mechanistically, MMP9 was identified as the target gene of MICALL2 for the regulation of invadopodium formation and SKOV3, HO-8910PM cell invasion. In addition, EGFR–AKT–mTOR signaling was identified as the downstream pathway of MICALL2 in the regulation of MMP9 expression. Furthermore, MICALL2 silencing promoted EGFR degradation; however, this effect was abrogated by treatment with the autophagy inhibitors acadesine and chloroquine diphosphate. Silencing of MICALL2 resulted in a suppressive activity of Rac1 while suppressing Rac1 activation attenuated the pro-EGFR, pro-MMP9, and proinvasive effects induced by the overexpression of MICALL2. Collectively, our results indicated that MICALL2 participated in the process of immune infiltration and invasion by ovarian cancer cells. Moreover, MICALL2 prevented EGFR degradation in a Rac1-dependent manner, consequently leading to EGFR–AKT–mTOR–MMP9 signaling activation and invadopodia-mediated matrix degradation. The incidence of diabetes mellitus is dramatically increasing every year, causing a huge global burden. Moreover, existing anti-diabetic drugs inevitably bring adverse reactions, and the application of islet transplantation is often limited by the damage caused by oxidative stress after transplantation. Thus, new approaches are needed to combat the growing burden of diabetes mellitus. Anthocyanins are of great nutritional interest and have been documented that have beneficial effects on chronic diseases, including diabetes mellitus. Here, we describe the health effects of anthocyanins on diabetes mellitus and islet transplantation. Epidemiological studies demonstrated that moderate intake of anthocyanins leading to a reduction in risk of diabetes mellitus. Numerous experiments both animal and clinical studies also showed positive effects of anthocyanins on prevention and treatment of diabetes and diabetic complications. These effects of anthocyanins may be related to mechanisms of improving glucose and lipid metabolism and insulin resistance, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. In addition, damage and function of pancreatic islets after transplantation are also improved by anthocyanins. These findings suggest that daily intake of anthocyanins may not only improve nutritional metabolism in healthy individuals to prevent from diabetes, but also as a supplementary treatment of diabetes mellitus and islet transplantation. To address the concerns with power consumption and processing efficiency in big-size data processing, sparse coding in computing-in-memory (CIM) architectures is gaining much more attention. Here, a novel Flash-based CIM architecture is proposed to implement large-scale sparse coding, wherein various matrix weight training algorithms are verified. Then, with further optimizations of mapping methods and initialization conditions, the variation-sensitive training (VST) algorithm is designed to enhance the processing efficiency and accuracy of the applications of image reconstructions. Based on the comprehensive characterizations observed when considering the impacts of array variations, the experiment demonstrated that the trained dictionary could successfully reconstruct the images in a 55 nm flash memory array based on the proposed architecture, irrespective of current variations. The results indicate the feasibility of using Flash-based CIM architectures to implement high-precision sparse coding in a wide range of applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
