Chemical investigation into the stems of the medicinal plant Schisandra sphaerandra led to the isolation and identification of a new dibenzocyclooctadiene lignan sphaerandrin A (1) and 11 known ones gomisin B (2), schirubrisin B (3), kadsuphilin B (4), schizandrin (5), benzoylgomisin Q (6), angeloylgomisin Q (7), gomisin G (8), schisanwilsonin O (9), isogomisin O (10), schisantherin D (11), and wuweizisu C (12). The structure of the new compound was elucidated by comprehensive spectroscopic methods including 1 D/2D NMR, HRESIMS, and CD spectrometry. To the best of our knowledge, compounds 2 – 11 were obtained from this species for the first time. All the compounds were evaluated for the cytotoxic activity against the triple-negative breast cancer cell lines MDA-MB-231 and HCC-1937. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanoformulations of mononuclear Pt complexes cis‐PtCl2(PPh3)2 (1), [Pt(PPh3)2(L−Cys)] ⋅ H2O (3, L−Cys=L‐cysteinate), trans‐PtCl2(PPh2PhNMe2)2 (4; PPh2PhNMe2=4‐(dimethylamine)triphenylphosphine), trans‐PtI2(PPh2PhNMe2)2 (5) and dinuclear Pt cluster Pt2(μ‐S)2(PPh3)4 (2) have comparable cytotoxicity to cisplatin against murine melanoma cell line B16F10. Masking of these discrete molecular entities within the hydrophobic core of Pluronic® F‐127 significantly boosted their solubility and stability, ensuring efficient cellular uptake, giving in vitro IC50 values in the range of 0.87–11.23 μM. These results highlight the potential therapeutic value of Pt complexes featuring stable Pt−P bonds in nanocomposite formulations with biocompatible amphiphilic polymers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: The association between maternal education and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) has been discussed in considerable studies, yet the inconsistent findings still exist. The aim of this study is to investigate whether maternal education level is associated with GDM risk.Material and methods: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to October 2018. Observational studies on the association between maternal education level and GDM risk were included. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for highest versus lowest level of maternal education were estimated using a random-effects model.Results: As compared to lowest education level, the pooled OR for women with highest education level was 0.75 (95% CI: 0.53-1.05). After adjusting for body mass index (BMI) and family history of diabetes, the estimated effect of maternal education on GDM were 0.68 (95% CI: 0.57-0.80) and 0.75 (95% CI: 0.60-0.92), respectively.Conclusions: Our results indicate that there is no significant association between maternal education level and risk of GDM. The Chishui River is the last free‐flowing tributary of the upper Yangtze River, China, which has an important role in fish conservation. This study aimed to explore the spatial organisation of fish assemblages in this river. Field sampling was conducted biannually between 2015 and 2017 at 41 sites from its headwater and downstream. One hundred and twenty‐two fish species were captured, including 34 endemic, 15 threatened and six exotic species. Fish assemblages varied significantly along the longitudinal gradient. Based on cluster and ordination analyses, 41 sampling sites could be divided into five site‐groups, corresponding to the headwater, upstream, midstream, downstream and the Xishui‐branch, respectively. The splitting of fish assemblages was consistent with the geographical divisions. However, fish species changed gradually along the longitudinal gradient rather than abruptly, which was consistent with the River Continuum Concept (RCC). In the headwaters and upstream, fish assemblages were mainly dominated by cold‐water and rheophilic species, while in the lower stretches, fish assemblages were dominated by warm‐water and limnophilic species. According to null models, fish assemblages were significantly nonrandomly structured at the basin scale, but randomly structured at the regional scale. This study is an important step in understanding the assembly rules of fish assemblages in this free‐flowing river and provides useful information for future fish conservation and ecological restoration. Aims: Several studies have been carried out to examine the association between cigarette smoking during pregnancy and risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), yet the findings are mixed. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the relationship between cigarette smoking during pregnancy and GDM risk.Material and methods: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Cochrane Library databases were searched up to December 2017. Studies on cigarette smoking during pregnancy and GDM were retrieved. The pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for highest versus lowest level of cigarette smoking were calculated using a random-effects model.Results: Compared to nonsmoking, the pooled ORs of cigarette smoking during pregnancy were 0.98 (95% CI: 0.88-1.10) for GDM. Specifically, the pooled ORs of light smoking and heavy smoking during pregnancy for GDM were 1.10 (95% CI: 0.97-1.25) and 1.02 (95% CI: 0.67-1.53), respectively.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that there is no significant association between cigarette smoking during pregnancy and risk of GDM. For more than nine decades, transurethral resection of the prostate remains the gold standard for the surgical treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic obstruction. The occurrence of urethral strictures after transurethral resection of the prostate is one of the major late complications and has been reported as the leading cause of iatrogenic urethral strictures in patients older than 45 years who underwent urethroplasty. Although several postulations have been proposed to explain the urethral stricture after transurethral resection of the prostate, the exact etiology of urethral stricture after TURP is still controversial. Suggested etiological factors of urethral stricture formation after transurethral resection of the prostate include infection, mechanical trauma, prolonged indwelling catheter time, use of local anesthesia, and electrical injury by a stray current. One single treatment option is not appropriate for all stricture types. The management of urethral stricture following transurethral resection of the prostate includes minimally invasive endoscopic methods, including urethral dilation and direct visual incision, or open surgical procedures with varying urethroplasty techniques. Although scientific studies focusing on urethral strictures after transurethral resection of the prostate are relatively limited and sparse, we can apply the principles of urethral stricture management before making decisions on individual stricture treatment.
