Livestock grazing has shaped grassland ecosystems around the world. Previous studies indicated grazing showed various impacts on small rodents; however, most studies were conducted over 1-2 years without controlling for confounding factors such as immigration/emigration and predation in rodents. Brandt's voles ( Lasiopodomys brandtii) are generally recognized as pests because of food overlap with domestic herbivores, but are also important for biodiversity conservation because they provide nests or food to many birds. Fully understanding the ecological relationship between domestic herbivores and small mammals is essential to making ecosystem management decisions. To address these needs, we carried out a field experiment during the period 2010-2013 to assess the effects of sheep grazing on vegetation and the population density of Brandt's voles along a gradient of three grazing intensities by using 12 large-scale enclosures. Responses of Brandt's voles to livestock grazing varied with grazing intensity and year. As compared to the control group, sheep grazing had no effect on vole abundance in the first year but an overall negative effect on vole abundance in the following 3 years. Successive grazing caused decreases in survival and male body mass of voles, but had no significant effect on fecundity. Negative effects of grazing were associated with a grazing-induced deterioration in both food quantity (reflected by biomass and cover of less-preferred plants), and food quality (measured by tannin and total phenol content). Our findings highlight the urgent need for more flexible management of yearly rotational grazing to optimize livestock production while maintaining species diversity and ecosystem health. The high-temperature behavior and rehydration characteristics of the hardened cement paste and their mechanisms have been studied in this paper. X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetry are used to establish the effect of elevated temperatures on the mineralogical changes that occurred in the hardened cement paste. The change of microstructure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that with the temperature increased, the compressive strength of hardened cement paste first increased and then decreased. According to micromeasurements, at 400°C, the porosity and average pore diameter of hardened cement paste increased slightly, while at 800°C, the porosity and average pore diameter of hardened cement paste increased sharply. When hardened cement paste was cured after exposing to 400°C, its pore structure and phase composition had no change, while when hardened cement paste was cured after exposing to 800°C, there are new hydration products, and its pore structure may be finer, but it cannot fully recover to the original state. ABSTRACT Since the early 20th century, wildlife managers have deployed artificial nesting structures for wood ducks ( Aix sponsa) to increase availability of nest sites and local reproduction of the species. However, knowledge is lacking of the effects of nest structure size (i.e., large vs. small; Stephens et al. 1998) and reproductive data (e.g., clutch size, hatch date, duckling survival) on recruitment of wood ducks. We used stochastic simulation analyses to predict recruitment of wood ducks into late summer by analyzing data from a 6-year study of box-nesting wood ducks, and 4-year (Mississippi) and 2-year (Alabama) studies of radio-marked female wood ducks and their ducklings. Our index of recruitment was the number of radio-marked ducklings per nest box that survived until 1 September. Ducklings hatched after 1 June exhibited a 30-day survival probability of 0.29, which was nearly 3 times greater than those hatched before 1 June. In east-central Mississippi, 68% and 65% of total wood duck recruits from large and small boxes, respectively, were hatched and reared from June to August. In western Mississippi, 91% of recruits from each box size also were hatched and reared from June to August. Mean number of wood duck recruits produced from large boxes was greater than small boxes at each study site; each large box in western Mississippi produced approximately 4 recruits on average, whereas small boxes in east-central Mississippi produced approximately 1 recruit. Wood duck recruits in our study resulted primarily from late spring and summer hatched birds in contrast to most Nearctic ducks with adaptive, early nesting to promote recruitment. In Mississippi and similar southern environments, we recommend use of large boxes and cleaning boxes around 1 May after completion of initial nests, and emphasize the importance of late spring and summer duckling production to wood duck recruitment. © 2015 The Wildlife Society. Endogenous carbohydrates in biosamples are frequently highlighted as the most differential metabolites in many metabolomics studies. A simple, fast, simultaneous quantitative method for 16 endogenous carbohydrates in plasma has been developed using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. In order to quantify 16 endogenous carbohydrates in plasma, various conditions, including columns, chromatographic conditions, mass spectrometry conditions, and plasma preparation methods, were investigated. Different conditions in this quantified analysis were performed and optimized. The reproducibility, precision, recovery, matrix effect, and stability of the method were verified. The results indicated that a methanol/acetonitrile (50:50, v/v) mixture could effectively and reproducibly precipitate rat plasma proteins. Cold organic solvents coupled with vortex for 1 min and incubated at -20°C for 20 min were the most optimal conditions for protein precipitation and extraction. The results, according to the linearity, recovery, precision, matrix effect, and stability, showed that the method was satisfactory in the quantification of endogenous carbohydrates in rat plasma. The quantified analysis of endogenous carbohydrates in rat plasma performed excellently in terms of sensitivity, high throughput, and simple sample preparation, which met the requirement of quantification in specific expanded metabolomic studies after the global metabolic profiling research. 1. Camera trapping plays an important role in wildlife surveys, and provides valuable information for estimation of population density. While mark-recapture techniques can estimate population density for species that can be individually recognized or marked, there are no robust methods to estimate density of species that cannot be individually identified. 2. We developed a new approach to estimate population density based on the simulation of individual movement within the camera grid. Simulated animals followed a correlated random walk with the movement parameters of segment length, angular deflection, movement distance and home-range size derived from empirical movement paths. Movement was simulated under a series of population densities. We used the Random Forest algorithm to determine the population density with the highest likelihood of matching the camera trap data. We developed an R package, cameratrapR, to conduct simulations and estimate population density. 3. Compared with line transect surveys and the random encounter model, cameratrapR provides more reliable estimates of wildlife density with narrower confidence intervals. Functions are provided to visualize movement paths, derive movement parameters, and plot camera trapping results. 4. The package allows researchers to estimate population sizes/densities of animals that cannot be individually identified and cameras are deployed in a grid pattern. • We developed an R package to estimate wildlife density within the camera trap grid. • The package, cameratrapR, is based on simulations of species-specific animal movement. • The movement parameters were derived from footprint chains. • cameratrapR is more reliable than line transect surveys and the random encounter model. • A database of footprint chains is under construction to support cameratrapR. Physiological states and foraging behaviors may shape movement patterns of animals. Optimal foraging theory and what we term the deliberate movement hypothesis predict that, to reduce predation risk, central place foragers should move faster with smaller turning angles the further they are from their central place. The complementary bimodal foraging trip hypothesis predicts that the distribution of foraging distances exhibited by central place foragers should be bimodal due to a trade-off between provisioning offspring and self-feeding. We used radio-telemetry to test these hypotheses for American beavers (Castor canadensis) in northern Alabama, United States. American beavers moved faster with increasing distance from lodges in wetland land cover but not in terrestrial land covers, partially supporting the deliberate movement hypothesis. Hourly distances moved from lodges were distributed bimodally during the breeding season, which supports the bimodal foraging trip hypothesis. Wildlife species have been subject to control efforts throughout human history due to real or alleged human-wildlife conflicts. The Double-crested Cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus in the interior of North America is no exception, with recent population growth leading to increased conflicts and consequently the development of many control programmes. These control programmes are usually conducted at local scales, often with little or no effort to assess their cumulative effects at the population level. We attempted the first comprehensive assessment of the cumulative effects of control at various spatio-temporal scales, focusing on 199 colonies of Double-crested Cormorant monitored during a 29-year period. Linear models were used to assess the relationship between colony-specific growth rates and a set of candidate factors using an information-theoretic approach. Colony-level density-dependent effects and local control efforts had the greatest influences on population growth. We detected a cumulative effect of management, whereby (i) the reduction in population growth rate was generally stronger when different control activities such as culling or egg oiling were combined, and (ii) past control operations tended to have a pervasive impact on growth rates, especially egg oiling and nest destruction, which negatively affected local recruitment. However, our results also suggest that catastrophic events and the culling of breeding adults that occurred at least 2 years previously could fuel subsequent recruitment or natural immigration from nearby colonies, for instance if the breeding success of remaining pairs was increased through a diminution of density-dependent regulatory processes. Density-dependence at the metapopulation level constituted a third source of regulation, as local growth rates were reduced with increasing number or proximity of active neighbouring colonies. We also found evidence that the culling of Double-crested Cormorants wintering in the southeastern USA could negatively impact the population growth of individual breeding colonies in the Great Lakes, although further research integrating models of migratory connectivity is needed to reach more definitive conclusions. Finally, despite previous studies emphasizing its importance, the net effect of management-induced dispersal appeared small at large spatial scales. We show that this can be explained in part by control strategies (e.g. spatially clustered operations). The continuation of Cormorant management efforts will provide an opportunity to refine the present assessment of the relative importance of density-dependence, breeding vs. non-breeding season management and dispersal, particularly if population models are coupled with monitoring programmes within an adaptive management framework.
