Abstract

Infrastructure built on perennially frozen ice-rich ground relies heavily on thermally stable subsurface conditions. Climate warming-induced deepening of ground thaw puts such infrastructure at risk of failure. For better assessing the risk of large-scale future damage to Arctic infrastructure, improved strategies for model-based approaches are urgently needed. We used the laterally-coupled one-dimensional heat conduction model CryoGrid3 to simulate permafrost degradation affected by linear infrastructure. We present a case study of a gravel road built on continuous permafrost (Dalton highway, Alaska) and forced our model under historical and strong future warming conditions (following the RCP8.5 scenario). As expected, the presence of a gravel road in the model leads to higher net heat flux entering the ground compared to a reference run without infrastructure, and thus a higher rate of thaw. Further, our results suggest that road failure is likely a consequence of lateral destabilization due to talik formation in the ground beside the road, rather than a direct consequence of a top-down thawing and deepening of the active layer below the road centre. In line with previous studies, we identify enhanced snow accumulation and ponding (both a consequence of infrastructure presence) as key factors for increased soil temperatures and road degradation. Using differing horizontal model resolutions we show that it is possible to capture these key factors and their impact on thawing dynamics with a low number of lateral model units, underlining the potential of our model approach for use in pan-arctic risk assessments. Our results suggest a general two-phase behaviour of permafrost degradation: an initial phase of slow and gradual thaw, followed by a strong increase in thawing rates after exceedance of a critical ground warming. Abstract

Vegetation properties of arctic tundra vary dramatically across its full latitudinal extent, yet few studies have quantified tundra ecosystem properties across latitudinal gradients with field-based observations that can be related to remotely sensed proxies. Here we present data from field sampling of six locations along the Eurasia Arctic Transect in northwestern Siberia. We collected data on the aboveground vegetation biomass, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and the leaf area index (LAI) for both sandy and loamy soil types, and analyzed their spatial patterns. Aboveground biomass, NDVI, and LAI all increased with increasing summer warmth index (SWI—sum of monthly mean temperatures > 0 °C), although functions differed, as did sandy vs. loamy sites. Shrub biomass increased non-linearly with SWI, although shrub type biomass diverged with soil texture in the southernmost locations, with greater evergreen shrub biomass on sandy sites, and greater deciduous shrub biomass on loamy sites. Moss biomass peaked in the center of the gradient, whereas lichen biomass generally increased with SWI. Total aboveground biomass varied by two orders of magnitude, and shrubs increased from 0 g m−2 at the northernmost sites to >500 g m−2 at the forest-tundra ecotone. Current observations and estimates of increases in total aboveground and shrub biomass with climate warming in the Arctic fall short of what would represent a 'subzonal shift' based on our spatial data. Non-vascular (moss and lichen) biomass is a dominant component (>90% of the photosynthetic biomass) of the vegetation across the full extent of arctic tundra, and should continue to be recognized as crucial for Earth system modeling. Abstract

Psychologists have become increasingly concerned with the role of religion and spirituality in resolving childhood physical and sexual abuse, particularly religion-related abuse. In treating victims of child abuse, trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy has emerged as a leading treatment for recovery. In this article, we discuss the relevance of religious and spiritual issues in trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy for children and teens. Using three case studies, we then present a model for assessing and treating religion and spirituality in trauma-focused cognitive behavior therapy. This model focuses on the client's pre-existing religious and spiritual functioning as well as changes in religion/spirituality after abuse. We suggest that this approach will assist clients from various religious and spiritual affiliations to process childhood abuse. Abstract

Lakes and drained lake basins (DLBs) are dominant landforms across Arctic lowland regions. The long-term dynamics of lake formation and drainage is evident in the abundance of lakes and DLBs covering as much as 80% of the landscape in various regions of Arctic Alaska, Russia, and Canada. Lake drainage can be triggered through different mechanisms such as lake tapping by an adjacent stream, bank overflow or ice wedge degradation. Following drainage, DLBs can become valuable grazing land for caribou and reindeer as well as usable land for infrastructure development due to low ground ice content in recent DLBs. In addition, DLBs can be sites for soil organic carbon accumulation in the form of peat which also play a role for carbon cycling. Comprehensive and accurate mapping of DLB distribution, age and drainage mechanism, will further inform our understanding of their role in permafrost landscape evolution across varying timescales. DLBs differ from the surrounding terrain in vegetation structure and composition, soil moisture, elevation, size and types of ice-wedge polygons and other parameters that make them an identifiable target based on remote sensing data. Here, we present a novel approach to map DLBs in permafrost landscapes with a specific focus on the North Slope of Alaska as well as select areas in Siberia and northwestern Canada. To map DLBs, we combined multispectral satellite imagery (Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2), Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) acquisitions (Sentinel-1), and DEM data (ArcticDEM). To cover the entire study area in each region, we included Landsat-8 acquisitions from all available years and Sentinel-2 for 2016 and 2018 to create cloud-free mosaics. The classification combines methodologies from pixel-based and object-based image analysis. Numerous studies have evaluated the dynamics of Arctic tundra vegetation throughout the past few decades, using remotely sensed proxies of vegetation, such as the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). While extremely useful, these coarse-scale satellite-derived measurements give us minimal information with regard to how these changes are being expressed on the ground, in terms of tundra structure and function. In this analysis, we used a strong regression model between NDVI and aboveground tundra phytomass, developed from extensive field-harvested measurements of vegetation biomass, to estimate the biomass dynamics of the circumpolar Arctic tundra over the period of continuous satellite records (1982-2010). We found that the southernmost tundra subzones (C-E) dominate the increases in biomass, ranging from 20 to 26%, although there was a high degree of heterogeneity across regions, floristic provinces, and vegetation types. The estimated increase in carbon of the aboveground live vegetation of 0.40 Pg C over the past three decades is substantial, although quite small relative to anthropogenic C emissions. However, a 19.8% average increase in aboveground biomass has major implications for nearly all aspects of tundra ecosystems including hydrology, active layer depths, permafrost regimes, wildlife and human use of Arctic landscapes. While spatially extensive on-the-ground measurements of tundra biomass were conducted in the development of this analysis, validation is still impossible without more repeated, long-term monitoring of Arctic tundra biomass in the field.

Abstract

We used the globally widespread genus Ophiognomonia as a model system to investigate climatic niche patterns in fungi, characterizing the climatic profiles of 28 species with seven temperature and seven precipitation variables. Using a novel version of Spatial Evolutionary and Ecological Vicariance Analysis (SEEVA), designed to deal with continuous and correlated variables, we examined well-sampled phyletic splits of a multi-gene phylogeny. We evaluated the degree to which phyletic divergence has been associated with climatic niche divergence between sister lineages, permitting elucidation of climatic associations in evolutionary context. From the 14 inter-correlated climatic variables, we extracted four principal axes, accounting for 93.2% of the climatic variation, with axes broadly labeled as: polarity, tropicality, winter mildness, and aridity. We also analyzed the two single variables maximum monthly temperature and precipitation. We detected climatic associations that were compatible with both niche-conservatism and niche-divergence within the phylogeny, and different cladistic bifurcations associated with different climatic splits. As might have been anticipated, geographic separation (or lack thereof) of phylogenetic splits was correlated with climate niche divergence (or conservation). This elaborated SEEVA method provides a visual and statistically solid basis for characterizing climatic niche divergence that should prove useful for elucidation of many other taxonomic groups.
