We address the long-standing problem of how to learn effective pixel-based image diffusion models at scale, introducing a remarkably simple greedy growing method for stable training of large-scale, high-resolution models. without the needs for cascaded super-resolution components. The key insight stems from careful pre-training of core components, namely, those responsible for text-to-image alignment {\it vs.} high-resolution rendering. We first demonstrate the benefits of scaling a {\it Shallow UNet}, with no down(up)-sampling enc(dec)oder. Scaling its deep core layers is shown to improve alignment, object structure, and composition. Building on this core model, we propose a greedy algorithm that grows the architecture into high-resolution end-to-end models, while preserving the integrity of the pre-trained representation, stabilizing training, and reducing the need for large high-resolution datasets. This enables a single stage model capable of generating high-resolution images without the need of a super-resolution cascade. Our key results rely on public datasets and show that we are able to train non-cascaded models up to 8B parameters with no further regularization schemes. Vermeer, our full pipeline model trained with internal datasets to produce 1024x1024 images, without cascades, is preferred by 44.0% vs. 21.4% human evaluators over SDXL.

Training diffusion models for audiovisual sequences allows for a range of generation tasks by learning conditional distributions of various input-output combinations of the two modalities. Nevertheless, this strategy often requires training a separate model for each task which is expensive. Here, we propose a novel training approach to effectively learn arbitrary conditional distributions in the audiovisual space.Our key contribution lies in how we parameterize the diffusion timestep in the forward diffusion process. Instead of the standard fixed diffusion timestep, we propose applying variable diffusion timesteps across the temporal dimension and across modalities of the inputs. This formulation offers flexibility to introduce variable noise levels for various portions of the input, hence the term mixture of noise levels. We propose a transformer-based audiovisual latent diffusion model and show that it can be trained in a task-agnostic fashion using our approach to enable a variety of audiovisual generation tasks at inference time. Experiments demonstrate the versatility of our method in tackling cross-modal and multimodal interpolation tasks in the audiovisual space. The SALTUS Probe mission will provide a powerful far-infrared (far-IR) pointed space observatory to explore our cosmic origins and the possibility of life elsewhere. The observatory employs an innovative deployable 14-m aperture, with a sunshield that will radiatively cool the off-axis primary to <45K. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into military capabilities has become a norm for major military power across the globe. Understanding how these AI models operate is essential for maintaining strategic advantages and ensuring security. This paper demonstrates an open-source methodology for analyzing military AI models through a detailed examination of the Zhousidun dataset, a Chinese-originated dataset that exhaustively labels critical components on American and Allied destroyers. By demonstrating the replication of a state-of-the-art computer vision model on this dataset, we illustrate how open-source tools can be leveraged to assess and understand key military AI capabilities. This methodology offers a robust framework for evaluating the performance and potential of AI-enabled military capabilities, thus enhancing the accuracy and reliability of strategic assessments.

Self-assembly of matter in solution generally relies on attractive interactions that overcome entropy and drive the formation of higher-order molecular and particulate structures. Such interactions play key roles in a variety of contexts, e.g., crystallisation, biomolecular folding and condensation, pathological protein aggregation, pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. The electrosolvation force entails a new conceptual paradigm in the known palette of interactions that drive the spontaneous accretion and organisation of matter. However, an understanding of the underlying physical chemistry, and therefore the ability to exert control over and tune the interaction, remains incomplete. Here we demonstrate that this force arises from the structure of the interfacial electrolyte. Neutral molecules such as a different solvent, osmolytes or surfactants, can - even at very low concentrations in the medium - disrupt or reinforce pre-existing interfacial solvent structure, thereby furnishing unanticipated chemical tuning of the ability of matter to self-assemble. The observations further present unexpected mechanistic elements that may explain the impact of co-solvents and osmolytes on protein structure, stability and pathological protein condensation. Our findings shed new light on microscopic mechanisms that drive the emergence of order and structure from molecular to macroscopic scales in the solution phase.

The energy coupling efficiency of active galactic nucleus (AGN) outbursts is known to differ significantly with factors including the jet kinetic power, duration of the outburst, and properties of the host galaxy cluster. As such, constraints on their jet power and lifetime functions are crucial to quantify the role of kinetic-mode AGN feedback on the evolution of galaxies since $z \sim 1$. In this work, we address this issue by measuring the energetics of a sample of 79 low-redshift (0.02 $< z <$ 0.2) remnant radio galaxies compiled from large-sky radio surveys - these objects uniquely probe the full duration of an AGN outburst. The jet kinetic power and outburst duration of each remnant are determined using the RAiSE dynamical model based on the surface brightness distribution observed in multi-frequency radio images. We compare the energetics constrained for this sample to those predicted for mock radio source populations - with various intrinsic functions for jet power and lifetime distributions - to correct for sample selection biases imposed on our sample. The intrinsic jet power and lifetime functions that yield a selection-biased mock population most similar to our observed sample are found using Bayesian inference. Our analysis places robust constraints on assumed power-law indices for the intrinsic jet power and lifetime functions: $p(Q)\propto Q^{-1.49\pm0.07}$ and $p(t_{\mathrm{on}})\propto t_{\mathrm{on}}^{-0.97\pm0.12}$ respectively. We discuss the implication of these findings for feedback-regulated accretion and the self-regulating nature of jet activity. We describe the space observatory architecture and mission design of the SALTUS mission, a NASA Astrophysics Probe Explorer concept. SALTUS will address key far-infrared science using a 14-m diameter <45 K primary reflector (M1) and will provide unprecedented levels of spectral sensitivity for planet, solar system, and galactic evolution studies, and cosmic origins. Drawing from Northrop Grumman's extensive NASA mission heritage, the observatory flight system is based on the LEOStar-3 spacecraft platform to carry the SALTUS Payload. The Payload is comprised of the inflation control system (ICS), Sunshield Module (SM), Cold Corrector Module (CCM), Warm Instrument Electronics Module, and Primary Reflector Module (PRM). The 14-m M1 is an off-axis inflatable membrane radiatively cooled by a two-layer sunshield (~1,000 m2 per layer). The CCM corrects for residual aberration from M1 and delivers a focused beam to two instruments - High Resolution Receiver (HiRX) and SAFARI-Lite. The CCM and PRM reside atop a truss-based composite deck which also provides a platform for the attitude control system. The 5-year mission lifetime is driven by a two-consumable architecture: the propellant system and the ICS. The Core Interface Module (CIM), a multi-faceted composite truss structure, provides a load path with high stiffness, mechanical attachment, and thermal separation between the Payload and spacecraft. The SM attaches outside the CIM with its aft end integrating directly to the bus. The spacecraft maintains an attitude off M1's boresight with respect to the Sun line to facilitate the <45 K thermal environment. SALTUS will reside in a Sun-Earth halo L2 orbit with a maximum Earth slant range of 1.8 million km thereby reducing orbit transfer delta-v. The generation of shaped laser beams, or structured light, is of interest in a wide range of fields, from microscopy to fundamental physics. There are several ways to make shaped beams, most commonly using spatial light modulators comprised of pixels of liquid crystals. These methods have limitations on the wavelength, pulse duration, and average power that can be used. Here we present a method to generate shaped light that can be used at any wavelength from the UV to IR, on ultrafast pulses, and a large range of optical powers. By exploiting the frequency difference between higher order modes, a result of the Gouy phase, and cavity mode matching, we can selectively couple into a variety of pure and composite higher order modes. Optical cavities are used as a spatial filter and then combined with sum frequency generation in a nonlinear crystal as the output coupler to the cavity to create ultrafast, frequency comb structured light., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The Galactic center lobe (GCL) is a $\sim 1^\circ$ object located north of the Galactic center. In the mid-infrared (MIR), the GCL appears as two 8.0-micron filaments that roughly define an ellipse. There is strong 24-micron and radio continuum emission in the interior of the ellipse. Due to its morphology and location in the sky, previous authors have argued that the GCL is created by outflows from star formation in the central molecular zone or by activity of the central black hole Sgr~A$^*$. We present images of the GCL from the GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky Murchison Widefield Array survey in radio continuum that show thermal absorption against the Galactic center, incompatible with an interpretation of synchrotron self-absorption. Estimates of the cosmic ray emissivity in this direction allow us to place a distance constraint on the GCL. To be consistent with standard emissivity assumptions, the GCL would be located 2kpc away. At a distance of 8kpc, the synchrotron background emissivity is enhanced by $\sim75$% in the direction of the GCL. We also present radio recombination line data from the Green Bank Telescope that constrains the electron temperature and line widths in this region, which are also more explicable if the GCL lies relatively close., Comment: 6 figures, accepted to ApJ

One of the keys to the success of collaborative learning is balanced participation by all learners, but this does not always happen naturally. Pedagogical robots have the potential to facilitate balance. However, it remains unclear what participation balance robots should aim at; various metrics have been proposed, but it is still an open question whether we should balance human participation in human-human interactions (HHI) or human-robot interactions (HRI) and whether we should consider robots' participation in collaborative learning involving multiple humans and a robot. This paper examines collaborative learning between a pair of students and a teachable robot that acts as a peer tutee to answer the aforementioned question. Through an exploratory study, we hypothesize which balance metrics in the literature and which portions of dialogues (including vs. excluding robots' participation and human participation in HHI vs. HRI) will better predict learning as a group. We test the hypotheses with another study and replicate them with automatically obtained units of participation to simulate the information available to robots when they adaptively fix imbalances in real-time. The Galactic center lobe (GCL) is an object ~1{\deg} across that is located north of the Galactic center. In the mid-infrared (MIR) the GCL appears as two 8.0${\mu}$m filaments between which is strong 24${\mu}$m and radio continuum emission. Due to its morphology and location in the sky, previous authors have argued that the GCL is located in the Galactic center region, created by outflows from star formation or by activity of the central black hole Sagittarius A*. In an associated paper (Hurley-Walker et al., 2024, in press), low-frequency radio emission indicates that the GCL must instead lie foreground to the Galactic center. If the GCL is foreground to the Galactic center, it is likely to be a type of object common throughout the Galactic disk; we here investigate whether its properties are similar to those of Galactic HII regions. We find that the GCL's MIR morphology, MIR flux densities, dust temperatures, and radio recombination line (RRL) properties as traced by the GBT Diffuse Ionized Gas Survey (GDIGS) are consistent with those of known Galactic HII regions, although the derived electron temperature is low. We search for the ionizing source(s) of the possible HII region and identify a stellar cluster candidate (Camargo #1092/Ryu & Lee #532) and a cluster of young stellar objects (SPICY G359.3+0.3) whose members have Gaia parallaxes distances of 1.7${\pm}$0.4kpc. Taken together, the results of our companion paper and those shown here suggest that the GCL has properties consistent with those of an HII region located ~2kpc from the Sun., Comment: Accepted to ApJ

Animated logos are a compelling and ubiquitous way individuals and brands represent themselves online. Manually authoring these logos can require significant artistic skill and effort. To help novice designers animate logos, design tools currently offer templates and animation presets. However, these solutions can be limited in their expressive range. Large language models have the potential to help novice designers create animated logos by generating animation code that is tailored to their content. In this paper, we introduce LogoMotion, an LLM-based system that takes in a layered document and generates animated logos through visually-grounded program synthesis. We introduce techniques to create an HTML representation of a canvas, identify primary and secondary elements, synthesize animation code, and visually debug animation errors. When compared with an industry standard tool, we find that LogoMotion produces animations that are more content-aware and are on par in terms of quality. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of LLM-generated animation for motion design.

In stars that lie on the main sequence in the Hertzsprung Russel diagram, like our sun, hydrogen is fused to helium in a number of nuclear reaction chains and series, such as the proton-proton chain and the carbon-nitrogen-oxygen cycles. Precisely determined thermonuclear rates of these reactions lie at the foundation of the standard solar model. This review, the third decadal evaluation of the nuclear physics of hydrogen-burning stars, is motivated by the great advances made in recent years by solar neutrino observatories, putting experimental knowledge of the proton-proton chain neutrino fluxes in the few-percent precision range. The basis of the review is a one-week community meeting held in July 2022 in Berkeley, California, and many subsequent digital meetings and exchanges. Each of the relevant reactions of solar and quiescent stellar hydrogen burning is reviewed here, from both theoretical and experimental perspectives. Recommendations for the state of the art of the astrophysical S-factor and its uncertainty are formulated for each of them. Several other topics of paramount importance for the solar model are reviewed, as well: recent and future neutrino experiments, electron screening, radiative opacities, and current and upcoming experimental facilities. Objective: To detect and classify features of stigmatizing and biased language in intensive care electronic health records (EHRs) using natural language processing techniques. Materials and Methods: We first created a lexicon and regular expression lists from literature-driven stem words for linguistic features of stigmatizing patient labels, doubt markers, and scare quotes within EHRs. The lexicon was further extended using Word2Vec and GPT 3.5, and refined through human evaluation. These lexicons were used to search for matches across 18 million sentences from the de-identified Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-III (MIMIC-III) dataset. For each linguistic bias feature, 1000 sentence matches were sampled, labeled by expert clinical and public health annotators, and used to supervised learning classifiers. Results: Lexicon development from expanded literature stem-word lists resulted in a doubt marker lexicon containing 58 expressions, and a stigmatizing labels lexicon containing 127 expressions. Classifiers for doubt markers and stigmatizing labels had the highest performance, with macro F1-scores of .84 and .79, positive-label recall and precision values ranging from .71 to .86, and accuracies aligning closely with human annotator agreement (.87). Discussion: This study demonstrated the feasibility of supervised classifiers in automatically identifying stigmatizing labels and doubt markers in medical text, and identified trends in stigmatizing language use in an EHR setting. Additional labeled data may help improve lower scare quote model performance. We present a multi-wavelength analysis, from the radio to the X-ray band, of the redshift $z=6.44$ VIK J2318$-$31 radio-loud (RL) quasi stellar object (QSO), one of the most distant currently known in this class. The work is based on newly obtained (uGMRT, ATCA, Chandra) as well as archival (GNIRS and X-Shooter) dedicated observations that have not been published yet. Based on the observed X-ray and radio emission, its relativistic jets are likely young and misaligned from our line of sight. Moreover, we can confirm, with simultaneous observations, the presence of a turnover in the radio spectrum at $\nu_{\rm peak} \sim 650$ MHz which is unlikely to be associated with self-synchrotron absorption. From the NIR spectrum we derived the mass of the central black hole, M$_{\rm BH}=8.1^{+6.8}_{-5.6} \times 10^8 {\rm M_{\odot}}$, and the Eddington ratio, $\lambda_{\rm EDD} = 0.8^{+0.8}_{-0.6}$, using broad emission lines as well as an accretion disc model fit to the continuum emission. Given the high accretion rate, the presence of a $\sim$8$\times$10$^8$ M$_\odot$ black hole at $z=6.44$ can be explained by a seed black hole ($\sim$10$^{4}$ M$_\odot$) that formed at $z\sim25$, assuming a radiative efficiency $\eta_{\rm d}\sim0.1$. However, by assuming $\eta_{\rm d}\sim0.3$, as expected for jetted systems, the mass observed would challenge current theoretical models of black hole formation., Comment: Accepted for publication on A&A the 22nd April 2024

Stability and reliable operation under a spectrum of environmental conditions is still an open challenge for soft and continuum style manipulators. The inability to carry sufficient load and effectively reject external disturbances are two drawbacks which limit the scale of continuum designs, preventing widespread adoption of this technology. To tackle these problems, this work details the design and experimental testing of a modular, tendon driven bead-style continuum manipulator with tunable stiffness. By embedding the ability to independently control the stiffness of distinct sections of the structure, the manipulator can regulate it's posture under greater loads of up to 1kg at the end-effector, with reference to the flexible state. Likewise, an internal routing scheme vastly improves the stability of the proximal segment when operating the distal segment, reducing deviations by at least 70.11%. Operation is validated when gravity is both tangential and perpendicular to the manipulator backbone, a feature uncommon in previous designs. This study delves into the bulge-disc components and stellar mass distribution in the fast-rotating, highly massive spiral galaxy 2MASX~J23453268-0449256, distinguished by extraordinary radio jets extending to Mpc scales. Using high-resolution multi-wavelength Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations and multi-parameter panchromatic spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting, we derive estimates for the star formation rate, total baryonic mass in stars, and warm dust properties. Our findings, validated at a spatial resolution of approximately 100 pc, reveal a pseudo-bulge rather than a classical bulge and a small nuclear bar and resonant ring, challenging conventional models of galaxy formation. Additionally, the lack of tidal debris and the highly symmetric spiral arms within a rotationally supported stellar disc indicate a tranquil coevolution of the galactic disc and its supermassive black hole (SMBH). Significantly, the galaxy exhibits suppressed star formation in its center, potentially influenced by feedback from the central accreting SMBH with powerful radio jets. Detailed multi-wavelength studies of potential star-forming gas disclose that, while hot X-ray gas cools down in the galaxy's halo, new stars do not form in the center, likely due to feedback effects. This study raises questions about the efficient fueling and sustained collimated jet ejection activity in J2345-0449, underscoring the imperative need for a comprehensive understanding of its central black hole engine properties, which are presently lacking. High resolution X-ray spectra reveal hidden cooling flows depositing cold gas at the centres of massive nearby early-type galaxies with little sign of normal star formation. Optical observations are revealing that a bottom-heavy Initial Mass Function is common within the inner kpc of similar galaxies. We revive the possibility that a low-mass star formation mode is operating due to the high thermal pressure in the cooling flow, thus explaining the accumulation of low-mass stars. We further explore whether such a mode operated in early, high-redshift galaxies and has sporadically continued to the present day. The idea links observed distant galaxies with black holes which are ultramassive for their stellar mass, nearby red nuggets and massive early-type galaxies. Anti-seizure medications (ASMs) are the primary treatment for epilepsy, yet medication tapering effects have not been investigated in a dose, region, and time-dependent manner, despite their potential impact on research and clinical practice. We examined over 3000 hours of intracranial EEG recordings in 32 subjects during long-term monitoring, of which 22 underwent concurrent ASM tapering. We estimated ASM plasma levels based on known pharmaco-kinetics of all the major ASM types. We found an overall decrease in the power of delta band activity around the period of maximum medication withdrawal in most (80%) subjects, independent of their epilepsy type or medication combination. The degree of withdrawal correlated positively with the magnitude of delta power decrease. This dose-dependent effect was strongly seen across all recorded cortical regions during daytime; but not in sub-cortical regions, or during night time. We found no evidence of differential effect in seizure onset, spiking, or pathological brain regions. The finding of decreased delta band power during ASM tapering agrees with previous literature. Our observed dose-dependent effect indicates that monitoring ASM levels in cortical regions may be feasible for applications such as medication reminder systems, or closed-loop ASM delivery systems. ASMs are also used in other neurological and psychiatric conditions, making our findings relevant to a general neuroscience and neurology audience.

Shock-driven multiphase mixing occurs in many physical systems such as explosive dispersal of chemical or biological agents, in the evolution of supernova remnants, and in supersonic and detonative combustion engines. This mixing process is driven by the Shock Driven Multiphase Instability (SDMI), a derivative of the canonical Richtmyer-Meshkov Instability (RMI). The SDMI deviates from the RMI as particle lag effects become significant, where a higher momentum deficit leads to longer equilibration times and a reduction in hydrodynamic mixing. In this work, the effect of particle lag (rate of momentum transfer) on the SDMI evolution was isolated and investigated utilizing solid nondeforming and nonevaporating particles of differing sizes while holding the effective density ratio (mass of particles in the interface) constant. Three particle sizes were selected with increasing velocity relaxation times. Experiments were conducted by accelerating a cylindrical interface comprised of air and seeded particles surrounded by clean (particle-free) air with a Mach 1.35 shock wave. The development of the multiphase interface was measured using particle imaging velocimetry (PIV). Circulation measurements showed a decrease in mixing with increasing particle size. Finally, a new model, derived from theory, is proposed to predict circulation deposition, mixing energy, in the SDMI based on shock strength, effective density ratio, and particle response times., Comment: 36 pages, 16 figures

SatHub is one of the four hubs of the IAU Centre for the Protection of the Dark and Quiet Sky from Satellite Constellation Interference (CPS). It focuses on observations, data analysis, software, and training materials to improve our understanding of the impact of satellite constellations on astronomy and observers worldwide. As a preface to more in-depth IAUS385 sessions, we gave a summary of some recent work by SatHub members and the current status of satellite constellations, including optical and radio observations. We shared how the audience can join or get more involved, e.g., via the CPS Slack for asynchronous collaboration. We use analytical and $N$-body methods to study the capture of field stars by gravitating substructures moving across a galactic environment. The majority of stars captured by a substructure move on temporarily-bound orbits that are lost to galactic tides after a few orbital revolutions. In numerical experiments where a substructure model is immersed into a sea of field particles on a circular orbit, we find a population of particles that remain bound to the substructure potential for indefinitely-long times. This population is absent from substructure models initially placed outside the galaxy on an eccentric orbit. We show that gravitational capture is most efficient in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) on account of their low velocity dispersions and high stellar phase-space densities. In these galaxies `dark' sub-subhaloes which do not experience in-situ star formation may capture field stars and become visible as stellar overdensities with unusual properties: (i) they would have a large size for their luminosity, (ii) contain stellar populations indistinguishable from the host galaxy, and (iii) exhibit dark matter (DM)-dominated mass-to-light ratios. We discuss the nature of several `anomalous' stellar systems reported as star clusters in the Fornax and Eridanus II dSphs which exhibit some of these characteristics. DM sub-subhaloes with a mass function $d N/d M_\bullet\sim M_\bullet^{-\alpha}$ are expected to generate stellar systems with a luminosity function, $d N/d M_\star\sim M_\star^{-\beta}$, where $\beta=(2\alpha+1)/3=1.6$ for $\alpha=1.9$. Detecting and characterizing these objects in dSphs would provide unprecedented constraints on the particle mass and cross section of a large range of DM particle candidates., Comment: 21 pages. This paper presents an overview of the Milky Way and nearby galaxies science case for the \textit{Single Aperture Large Telescope for Universe Studies} (SALTUS) far-infrared NASA probe-class mission concept. SALTUS offers enormous gains in spatial resolution and spectral sensitivity over previous far-IR missions, thanks to its cold ($<$40~K) 14-m primary mirror. Key Milky Way and nearby galaxies science goals for SALTUS focus on understanding the role of star formation in feedback in the Local Universe. In addition to this science case, SALTUS would open a new window to to of Galactic and extragalactic communities in the 2030s, enable fundamentally new questions to be answered, and be a far-IR analog to the near- and mid-IR capabilities of JWST. This paper presents an overview of the high-redshift extragalactic science case for the Single Aperture Large Telescope for Universe Studies (SALTUS) far-infrared NASA probe-class mission concept. Enabled by its 14m primary reflector, SALTUS offers enormous gains in spatial resolution and spectral sensitivity over previous far-IR missions. SALTUS would be a versatile observatory capable of responding to the scientific needs of the extragalactic community in the 2030s, and a natural follow-on to the near- and mid-IR capabilities of JWST. Key early-universe science goals for SALTUS focus on understanding the role of galactic feedback processes in regulating galaxy growth across cosmic time, and charting the rise of metals and dust from the early universe to the present. Quantum state teleportation is commonly used in designs for large-scale fault-tolerant quantum computers. Using Quantinuum's H2 trapped-ion quantum processor, we implement the first demonstration of a fault-tolerant state teleportation circuit for a quantum error correction code - in particular, the planar topological [[7,1,3]] color code, or Steane code. The circuits use up to 30 trapped ions at the physical layer qubits and employ real-time quantum error correction - decoding mid-circuit measurement of syndromes and implementing corrections during the protocol. We conduct experiments on several variations of logical teleportation circuits using both transversal gates and lattice surgery protocols. Among the many measurements we report on, we measure the logical process fidelity of the transversal teleportation circuit to be 0.975(2) and the logical process fidelity of the lattice surgery teleportation circuit to be 0.851(9). Additionally, we run a teleportation circuit that is equivalent to Knill-style quantum error correction and measure the process fidelity to be 0.989(2).

We present results from simultaneous modeling of 2D (projected along the line of sight) position, proper motion and line-of-sight velocity for \textit{Gaia}- and APOGEE-observed stars near the centre of the Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf spheroidal galaxy. We use a mixture model that allows for independent sub-populations contributed by the Sgr galaxy, its nuclear star cluster M54, and the Milky Way foreground. We find an offset of $0.295\pm 0.029$ degrees between the inferred centroids of Sgr and M54, corresponding to a (projected) physical separation of $0.135\pm 0.013$ kpc. The detected offset might plausibly be driven by unmodelled asymmetry in Sgr's stellar configuration; however, standard criteria for model selection favour our symmetric model over an alternative that allows for bilateral asymmetry. We infer an offset between the proper motion centres of Sgr and M54 of $[\Delta\mu_{\alpha}\cos\delta,\Delta\mu_{\delta}]=[4.9, -19.7] \pm [6.8, 6.2]$ $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ ($[0.61, -2.46] \pm [0.85, 0.77] $ km s$^{-1}$), with magnitude similar to the covariance expected due to spatially-correlated systematic error. We infer an offset of $4.1\pm 1.2$ km s$^{-1}$ in line-of-sight velocity. Using inferred values for the systemic positions and motions of Sgr and M54 as initial conditions, we calculate the recent orbital history of a simplified Sgr/M54 system, which we demonstrate to be sensitive to any line-of-sight distance offset between M54 and Sgr, and to the distribution of dark matter within Sgr.

We present a novel proof of the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture in metric Diophantine approximation. Our proof is heavily motivated by the ideas of Koukoulopoulos-Maynard's breakthrough first argument, but simplifies and strengthens several technical aspects. In particular, we avoid any direct handling of GCD graphs and their `quality'. We also consider the metric quantitative theory of Diophantine approximations, improving the $(\log \Psi(N))^{-C}$ error-term of Aistleitner-Borda and the first named author to $\exp(-(\log \Psi(N))^{\frac{1}{2} - \varepsilon})$.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) frequently present behaviorally irregular patterns, significantly limiting their practical potentials and theoretical validity in travel behavior modeling. This study proposes strong and weak behavioral regularities as novel metrics to evaluate the monotonicity of individual demand functions (known as the "law of demand"), and further designs a constrained optimization framework with six gradient regularizers to enhance DNNs' behavioral regularity. The proposed framework is applied to travel survey data from Chicago and London to examine the trade-off between predictive power and behavioral regularity for large vs. small sample scenarios and in-domain vs. out-of-domain generalizations. The results demonstrate that, unlike models with strong behavioral foundations such as the multinomial logit, the benchmark DNNs cannot guarantee behavioral regularity. However, gradient regularization (GR) increases DNNs' behavioral regularity by around 6 percentage points (pp) while retaining their relatively high predictive power. In the small sample scenario, GR is more effective than in the large sample scenario, simultaneously improving behavioral regularity by about 20 pp and log-likelihood by around 1.7%. Comparing with the in-domain generalization of DNNs, GR works more effectively in out-of-domain generalization: it drastically improves the behavioral regularity of poorly performing benchmark DNNs by around 65 pp, indicating the criticality of behavioral regularization for enhancing model transferability and application in forecasting. Moreover, the proposed framework is applicable to other NN-based choice models such as TasteNets. Future studies could use behavioral regularity as a metric along with log-likelihood in evaluating travel demand models, and investigate other methods to further enhance behavioral regularity when adopting complex machine learning models.

It is shown that semilinear parabolic evolution equations $u'=A+f(t,u)$ featuring H\"older continuous nonlinearities $ f=f(t,u)$ with at most linear growth possess global strong solutions for a general class of initial data. A compact source, G0.02467-0.0727, was detected in ALMA \threemm observations in continuum and very broad line emission. The continuum emission has a spectral index $\alpha\approx3.3$, suggesting that the emission is from dust. The line emission is detected in several transitions of CS, SO, and SO$_2$ and exhibits a line width FWHM $\approx160$ \kms. The line profile appears Gaussian. The emission is weakly spatially resolved, coming from an area on the sky $\lesssim1"$ in diameter ($\lesssim10^4$ AU at the distance of the Galactic Center; GC). The centroid velocity is $v_{LSR}\approx40$-$50$ \kms, which is consistent with a location in the Galactic Center. With multiple SO lines detected, and assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions, $T_\mathrm{LTE} = 13$ K, which is colder than seen in typical GC clouds, though we cannot rule out low-density, subthermally excited, warmer gas. Despite the high velocity dispersion, no emission is observed from SiO, suggesting that there are no strong ($\gtrsim10~\mathrm{km~s}^{-1}$) shocks in the molecular gas. There are no detections at other wavelengths, including X-ray, infrared, and radio. We consider several explanations for the Millimeter Ultra-Broad Line Object (MUBLO), including protostellar outflow, explosive outflow, collapsing cloud, evolved star, stellar merger, high-velocity compact cloud, intermediate mass black hole, and background galaxy. Most of these conceptual models are either inconsistent with the data or do not fully explain it. The MUBLO is, at present, an observationally unique object., Comment: Accepted to ApJL

In August 2023, IT experts and scientists came together for a workshop to discuss the possibilities of building a computer cluster fully on renewable energies, as a test-case at Havana University in Cuba. The discussion covered the scientific needs for a computer cluster for particle physics at the InSTEC institute at Havana University, the possibilities to use solar energy, new developments in computing technologies, and computer cluster operation as well as operational needs for computing in particle physics. This computer cluster on renewable energies at the InSTEC institute is seen as a prototype for a large-scale computer cluster on renewable energies for scientific computing in the Caribbean, hosted in Cuba. The project is called "Humboldt Highway", to remember Alexander von Humboldt's achievements in bringing cultures of the American and European continents closer together by exchange and travel. In this spirit, we propose a project that enables and intensifies the scientific exchange between research laboratories and universities in Europe and the Caribbean, in particular Cuba.

Superconducting Nb thin films have recently attracted significant attention due to their utility for quantum information technologies. In the processing of Nb thin films, fluoride-based chemical etchants are commonly used to remove surface oxides that are known to affect superconducting quantum devices adversely. However, these same etchants can also introduce hydrogen to form Nb hydrides, potentially negatively impacting microwave loss performance. Here, we present comprehensive materials characterization of Nb hydrides formed in Nb thin films as a function of fluoride chemical treatments. In particular, secondary-ion mass spectrometry, X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy reveal the spatial distribution and phase transformation of Nb hydrides. The rate of hydride formation is determined by the fluoride solution acidity and the etch rate of Nb2O5, which acts as a diffusion barrier for hydrogen into Nb. The resulting Nb hydrides are detrimental to Nb superconducting properties and lead to increased power-independent microwave loss in coplanar waveguide resonators. However, Nb hydrides do not correlate with two-level system loss or device aging mechanisms. Overall, this work provides insight into the formation of Nb hydrides and their role in microwave loss, thus guiding ongoing efforts to maximize coherence time in superconducting quantum devices.

We report the observation of a coalescing compact binary with component masses $2.5\text{-}4.5~M_\odot$ and $1.2\text{-}2.0~M_\odot$ (all measurements quoted at the 90% credible level). The gravitational-wave signal GW230529_181500 was observed during the fourth observing run of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA detector network on 2023 May 29 by the LIGO Livingston Observatory. The primary component of the source has a mass less than $5~M_\odot$ at 99% credibility. We cannot definitively determine from gravitational-wave data alone whether either component of the source is a neutron star or a black hole. However, given existing estimates of the maximum neutron star mass, we find the most probable interpretation of the source to be the coalescence of a neutron star with a black hole that has a mass between the most massive neutron stars and the least massive black holes observed in the Galaxy. We provisionally estimate a merger rate density of $55^{+127}_{-47}~\text{Gpc}^{-3}\,\text{yr}^{-1}$ for compact binary coalescences with properties similar to the source of GW230529_181500; assuming that the source is a neutron star-black hole merger, GW230529_181500-like sources constitute about 60% of the total merger rate inferred for neutron star-black hole coalescences. Neutral atom arrays have emerged as a versatile platform towards scalable quantum computation and optimization. In this paper we present first demonstrations of weighted graph optimization on a Rydberg atom array using annealing with local light-shifts. We verify the ability to prepare weighted graphs in 1D and 2D arrays, including embedding a five vertex non-unit disk graph using nine physical qubits and demonstration of a simple crossing gadget. We find common annealing ramps leading to preparation of the target ground state robustly over a substantial range of different graph weightings. This work provides a route to exploring large-scale optimization of non-planar weighted graphs relevant for solving relevant real-world problems., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures. Given an operad $\mathcal{O}$, we define a notion of weak $\mathcal{O}$-monoids -- which we term $\mathcal{O}$-pseudomonoids -- in a 2-category. In the special case with the 2-category in question is the 2-category $\mathsf{Cat}$ of categories, this yields a notion of $\mathcal{O}$-monoidal category, which in the case of the associative and commutative operads retrieves unbiased notions of monoidal and symmetric monoidal categories, respectively. We carefully unpack the definition of $\mathcal{O}$-monoids in the 2-categories of discrete fibrations and of category-indexed sets. We introduce a theory of twisted simplicial distributions on simplicial principal bundles, which allow us to capture Bell's non-locality, and the more general notion of quantum contextuality. We leverage the classical theory of simplicial principal bundles, as well as structures on categories of such bundles, to provide powerful computational tools for analyzing twisted distributions in terms of both direct constructions in simplicial sets and techniques from homological algebra. It is shown that a 2D CFT consisting of a central charge $c$ Liouville theory, a chiral level one, rank $N$ Kac-Moody algebra and a weight $-3/2$ free fermion holographically generate 4D MHV tree-level scattering amplitudes. The correlators of this 2D CFT give directly the 4D leaf amplitudes associated to a single hyperbolic slice of flat space. The 4D celestial amplitudes arise in a large-$N$ and semiclassical large-$c$ limit, according to the holographic dictionary, as a translationally-invariant combination of leaf amplitudes. In this article, we characterize convexity in terms of algebras over a PROP, and establish a tensor-product-like symmetric monoidal structure on the category of convex sets. Using these two structures, and the theory of $\scr{O}$-monoidal categories, we state and prove a Grothendieck construction for lax $\scr{O}$-monoidal functors into convex sets. Diffusion of native defects such as vacancies and their interactions with impurities are fundamental in semiconductor crystal growth, device processing, and long-term aging of equilibration and transient diffusion of vacancies are rarely investigated. We used aluminum-gallium oxide/gallium oxide superlattices (SLs) to detect and analyze transient diffusion of cation vacancies during annealing in O2 at 1000-1100 C. Using a novel finite difference scheme for the diffusion equation with time- and space-varying diffusion constant, we extract diffusion constants for Al, Fe, and cation vacancies under the given conditions, including the vacancy concentration dependence for Al. indicate that vacancies present in the substrate transiently diffuse through the SLs, interacting with Sn as it also diffuses. In the case of SLs grown on Sn-doped beta-gallium oxide substrates, gradients observed in the extent of Al diffusion indicate that vacancies present in the substrate transiently diffuse through the SLs, interacting with Sn as it also diffuses. In the case of SLs grown on (010) Fe-doped substrates, the Al diffusion is uniform through the SLs, indicating a depth-uniform concentration of vacancies. We find no evidence in either case for the introduction of gallium vacancies from the free surface at rates sufficient to affect Al diffusion down to ppm concentrations, which has important bearing on the validity of typically-made assumptions of vacancy equilibration. Additionally, we show that unintentional impurities in Sn-doped gallium oxide such as Fe, Ni, Mn, Cu, and Li also diffuse towards the surface and accumulate. Relational network verification is a new approach to validating network changes. In contrast to traditional network verification, which analyzes specifications for a single network snapshot, relational network verification analyzes specifications concerning two network snapshots (e.g., pre- and post-change snapshots) and captures their similarities and differences. Relational change specifications are compact and precise because they specify the flows or paths that change between snapshots and then simply mandate that other behaviors of the network "stay the same", without enumerating them. To achieve similar guarantees, single-snapshot specifications need to enumerate all flow and path behaviors that are not expected to change, so we can check that nothing has accidentally changed. Thus, precise single-snapshot specifications are proportional to network size, which makes them impractical to generate for many real-world networks. To demonstrate the value of relational reasoning, we develop a high-level relational specification language and a tool called Rela to validate network changes. Rela first compiles input specifications and network snapshot representations to finite state transducers. It then checks compliance using decision procedures for automaton equivalence. Our experiments using data on complex changes to a global backbone (with over 10^3 routers) find that Rela specifications need fewer than 10 terms for 93% of them and it validates 80% of them within 20 minutes.

Next-generation low-cost semiconductors such as halide perovskites exhibit optoelectronic properties dominated by nanoscale variations in their structure, composition and photophysics. While microscopy provides a proxy for ultimate device function, past works have focused on neat thin-films on insulating substrates, missing crucial information about charge extraction losses and recombination losses introduced by transport layers. Here we use a multimodal operando microscopy toolkit to measure nanoscale current-voltage curves, recombination losses and chemical composition in an array of state-of-the-art perovskite solar cells before and after extended operational stress. We apply this toolkit to the same scan areas before and after extended operation to reveal that devices with the highest performance have the lowest initial performance spatial heterogeneity - a crucial link that is missed in conventional microscopy. We find that subtle compositional engineering of the perovskite has surprising effects on local disorder and resilience to operational stress. Minimising variations in local efficiency, rather than compositional disorder, is predictive of improved performance and stability. Modulating the interfaces with different contact layers or passivation treatments can increase initial performance but can also lead to dramatic nanoscale, interface-dominated degradation even in the presence of local performance homogeneity, inducing spatially varying transport, recombination, and electrical losses. These operando measurements of full devices act as screenable diagnostic tools, uniquely unveiling the microscopic mechanistic origins of device performance losses and degradation in an array of halide perovskite devices and treatments. Over a Cohen-Macaulay local ring, the minimal number of generators of a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module is bounded above by its multiplicity. In 1984 Ulrich asked whether there always exist modules for which equality holds; such modules are known nowadays as Ulrich modules. We answer this question in the negative by constructing families of two dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings that have no Ulrich modules. We show that a Bose--Einstein Condensate illuminated by a far off-resonant optical pump field and its retroreflection from a feedback mirror can produce stable, localised structures known as optomechanical droplets. This paper develops a systematic framework for the evidence neuroscientists use to establish whether a neural response represents a feature. Researchers try to establish that the neural response is (1) sensitive and (2) specific to the feature, (3) invariant to other features, and (4) functional, which means that it is used downstream in the brain. We formalize these desiderata in information-theoretic terms. This formalism allows us to precisely state the desiderata while unifying the different analysis methods used in neuroscience under one framework. We discuss how common methods such as correlational analyses, decoding and encoding models, representational similarity analysis, and tests of statistical dependence are used to evaluate the desiderata. In doing so, we provide a common terminology to researchers that helps to clarify disagreements, to compare and integrate results across studies and research groups, and to identify when evidence might be missing and when evidence for some representational conclusion is strong. We illustrate the framework with several canonical examples, including the representation of orientation, numerosity, faces, and spatial location. We end by discussing how the framework can be extended to cover models of the neural code, multi-stage models, and other domains., Comment: 50 pages, 11 figures

In Coevolving Latent Space Networks with Attractors (CLSNA) models, nodes in a latent space represent social actors, and edges indicate their dynamic interactions. Attractors are added at the latent level to capture the notion of attractive and repulsive forces between nodes, borrowing from dynamical systems theory. However, CLSNA reliance on MCMC estimation makes scaling difficult, and the requirement for nodes to be present throughout the study period limit practical applications. We address these issues by (i) introducing a Stochastic gradient descent (SGD) parameter estimation method, (ii) developing a novel approach for uncertainty quantification using SGD, and (iii) extending the model to allow nodes to join and leave over time. Simulation results show that our extensions result in little loss of accuracy compared to MCMC, but can scale to much larger networks. We apply our approach to the longitudinal social networks of members of US Congress on the social media platform X. Accounting for node dynamics overcomes selection bias in the network and uncovers uniquely and increasingly repulsive forces within the Republican Party.

This work showcases our team's (The BEEGees) contributions to the 2023 George B. Moody PhysioNet Challenge. The aim was to predict neurological recovery from coma following cardiac arrest using clinical data and time-series such as multi-channel EEG and ECG signals. Our modelling approach is multimodal, based on two-dimensional spectrogram representations derived from numerous EEG channels, alongside the integration of clinical data and features extracted directly from EEG recordings. Our submitted model achieved a Challenge score of $0.53$ on the hidden test set for predictions made $72$ hours after return of spontaneous circulation. Our study shows the efficacy and limitations of employing transfer learning in medical classification. With regard to prospective implementation, our analysis reveals that the performance of the model is strongly linked to the selection of a decision threshold and exhibits strong variability across data splits., Comment: 5 figures, 2 tables

Among the various candidates for dark matter (DM), ultralight vector DM can be probed by laser interferometric gravitational wave detectors through the measurement of oscillating length changes in the arm cavities. In this context, KAGRA has a unique feature due to differing compositions of its mirrors, enhancing the signal of vector DM in the length change in the auxiliary channels. Here we present the result of a search for $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson DM using the KAGRA data from auxiliary length channels during the first joint observation run together with GEO600. By applying our search pipeline, which takes into account the stochastic nature of ultralight DM, upper bounds on the coupling strength between the $U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson and ordinary matter are obtained for a range of DM masses. While our constraints are less stringent than those derived from previous experiments, this study demonstrates the applicability of our method to the lower-mass vector DM search, which is made difficult in this measurement by the short observation time compared to the auto-correlation time scale of DM., Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures

Doped semiconductors are a central and crucial component of all integrated circuits. By using a combination of white light and a focused laser beam, and exploiting hBN defect states, heterostructures of hBN/Graphene/hBN are photodoped in-operando, reproducibly and reversibly. We demonstrate device geometries with spatially-defined doping type and magnitude. After each optical doping procedure, magnetotransport measurements including quantum Hall measurements are performed to characterize the device performance. In the unipolar (p+-p-p+ and n-n+-n) configurations, we observe quantization of the longitudinal resistance, proving well-defined doped regions and interfaces that are further analyzed by Landauer-Buttiker modeling. Our unique measurements and modeling of these optically doped devices reveal a complete separation of the p- and n-Landau level edge states. The non-interaction of the edge states results in an observed "insulating" state in devices with a bi-polar p-n-p configuration that is uncommon and has not been measured previously in graphene devices. This insulating state could be utilized in high-performance graphene electrical switches. These quantitative magnetotransport measurements confirm that these doping techniques can be applied to any 2D materials encapsulated within hBN layers, enabling versatile, rewritable circuit elements for future computing and memory applications.
