151. A 1.4 GHz radio continuum and polarization survey at medium Galactic latitudes

Abstract

We present the first section of a radio continuum and polarization survey at medium Galactic latitudes carried out with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope at 1.4 GHz. Four large fields have been observed, which all together cover an area of about 1100 square degree. The rms-sensitivity is about 15 mK TB (about 7 mJy/beam area) in total intensity and is limited by confusion. A sensitivity of 8 mK TB is obtained in linear polarization. The angular resolution of the observations is 9.35 arcminute. The maps in total intensity and linear polarization have been absolutely calibrated by low resolution data where available. Significant linear polarization is seen in all the maps. In general, the intensity fluctuations measured in linear polarization are not correlated with total intensity structures. Areas of high polarization of some degrees extent are seen, again with no apparent corresponding total intensity feature. Modulation of polarized background emission by spatially varying Faraday rotation seems the most likely explanation. Quite unexpected is the detection of filamentary and ring-like depolarization structures in the direction of the anticentre region, whose extents are up to about 3 degree., Latex2 document, 17 pages, 14 figures. Abstract

The present paper offers structural damage detection methods based on the relative changes in localized flexibility properties. The localized flexibility matrices are obtained either by applying a decomposition procedure to an experimentally determined global flexibility matrix or by processing the output signals of a vibration test in a substructure-by-substructure manner. Three methods are evaluated in the present paper: a free-free substructural flexibility method, a deformation-based flexibility method, and a strain-basis flexibility method. These methods are applied to a model ten-story building problem, an experimental bridge damage data, and a hybrid experimental-simulated engine structure. The present methods are found to correctly identify damage locations.

Abstract

We present the results of a flux density monitoring program of extragalactic radio sources with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Data for 53 sources are listed from observations between 1991 and 1995/1996 in the frequency range from 1.4 GHz to 32 GHz. The sources have either been identified by EGRET on board CGRO at a different level of confidence or at least are candidates for showing up in the γ -ray range. The data will be useful for studies of the relationship of γ -ray activity to radio activity.

Abstract

Concerning safety and efficiency in surgery of isolated orbital floor fractures, several treatment modalities are being discussed. It is a matter of recent interest that prefabricated titanium meshes provide significant advantages. The purpose of this study was to review the usability of the MatrixORBITAL® plate.In a prospective study we evaluated 10 patients (June 2011 to November 2013) with an isolated orbital floor fracture. All patients in the study group had undergone reconstruction with the MatrixORBITAL® plate. For purposes of analysis were recorded: age, gender, fracture category according to Jaquiéry et al. (2007), duration of surgery, complications, globe motility (Harms wall), exophthalmometry, function of the infraorbital nerve, evaluation of facial symmetry and aesthetic as well as personal contentment of the patient. A reference group received a PDS® sheet, an antral balloon or other materials.In the study group (2 women and 8 men aged between 26 and 83 years) all cases presented a large disruption of the orbital floor ( 2 cm2 bony defect; category II-III). Volume changes were universally associated with diplopia, but only in two cases with an entrapment of the inferior rectus muscle. The mean duration of the operation was 110 minutes (minimum 50, maximum 135 minutes). Postoperatively diplopia was decreasing in all cases. None of the patients had a significant impairment of visus and no reoperation was necessary. The analysis of functional outcomes between the groups mesh, PDS sheet and antral balloon revealed no significant differences.Based on this experience and due to good intraoperative handling, the authors recommend the prefabricated titanium plate in the treatment of isolated orbital wall fractures or in combination with the medial wall despite the material costs.

Abstract

A retrospective analysis in the period 2007 to 2011 included 71 surgically treated patients for carcinoma of the head and neck region and subsequent reconstruction with 36 pedicled distant flaps and 47 free flaps. Patient specific parameters of data collection with SPSS 17.0 were age and sex distribution, TNM stage and treatment. The specific type of flap reconstruction, duration of surgery, complications, intensive care and inpatient treatment were recorded. The results showed that the healing process was uneventful in 26 (72.2 %) pedicled flaps, 14 (38.9 %) pedicled flaps were transplanted in a preoperatively irradiated area of the head and neck region and in 86.0 % with a positive healing process. Tumor stage, general physical condition of the patient and type of therapy are the key parameters for the choice of reconstruction.

Abstract

This study aims to characterise the polarized foreground emission in the ELAIS-N1 field and to address its possible implications for the extraction of the cosmological 21-cm signal from the Low-Frequency Array - Epoch of Reionization (LOFAR-EoR) data. We use the high band antennas of LOFAR to image this region and RM-synthesis to unravel structures of polarized emission at high Galactic latitudes. The brightness temperature of the detected Galactic emission is on average 4 K in polarized intensity and covers the range from -10 to +13rad m^-2 in Faraday depth. The total polarized intensity and polarization angle show a wide range of morphological features. We have also used the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) at 350 MHz to image the same region. The LOFAR and WSRT images show a similar complex morphology, at comparable brightness levels, but their spatial correlation is very low. The fractional polarization at 150 MHz, expressed as a percentage of the total intensity, amounts to 1.5%. There is no indication of diffuse emission in total intensity in the interferometric data, in line with results at higher frequencies. The wide frequency range, good angular resolution and good sensitivity make LOFAR an exquisite instrument for studying Galactic polarized emission at a resolution of 1-2 rad m^-2 in Faraday depth. The different polarised patterns observed at 150 MHz and 350 MHz are consistent with different source distributions along the line of sight wring in a variety of Faraday thin regions of emission. The presence of polarised foregrounds is a serious complication for Epoch of Reionization experiments. To avoid the leakage of polarized emission into total intensity, which can depend on frequency, we need to calibrate the instrumental polarization across the field of view to a small fraction of 1%., 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

We present the first detection of carbon radio recombination line absorption along the line of sight to Cygnus A. The observations were carried out with the LOw Frequency ARray in the 33 to 57 MHz range. These low frequency radio observations provide us with a new line of sight to study the diffuse, neutral gas in our Galaxy. To our knowledge this is the first time that foreground Milky Way recombination line absorption has been observed against a bright extragalactic background source. By stacking 48 carbon $\alpha$ lines in the observed frequency range we detect carbon absorption with a signal-to-noise ratio of about 5. The average carbon absorption has a peak optical depth of 2$\times$10$^{-4}$, a line width of 10 km s$^{-1}$ and a velocity of +4 km s$^{-1}$ with respect to the local standard of rest. The associated gas is found to have an electron temperature $T_{e}\sim$ 110 K and density $n_{e}\sim$ 0.06 cm$^{-3}$. These properties imply that the observed carbon $\alpha$ absorption likely arises in the cold neutral medium of the Orion arm of the Milky Way. Hydrogen and helium lines were not detected to a 3$\sigma$ peak optical depth limit of 1.5$\times$10$^{-4}$ for a 4 km s$^{-1}$ channel width. Radio recombination lines associated with Cygnus A itself were also searched for, but are not detected. We set a 3$\sigma$ upper limit of 1.5$\times$10$^{-4}$ for the peak optical depth of these lines for a 4 km s$^{-1}$ channel width., Comment: In press

Abstract

The standard resins of radiation-curable coatings provide either hard or flexible coatings dependent on the type of chemistry used. Whereas aromatic epoxide acrylates usually give hard and brittle coatings, urethane acrylates are known for their flexibility. Since the radiation curable systems should not contain solvents, the desired low viscosity for the specific application is adjusted with reactive monomers. This normally prevents the use of flexible high-molecular-weight polymers. On the other hand, the viscosity of dispersions is determined by the solid content only and not by the molecular weight of the polymers used. Thus, waterbased UV-curable coatings are one strategy out of this dilemma in order to combine the flexibility of higher-molecular-weight polymers with the hardness of highly crosslinked acrylates. The mechanical data of conventional and waterbased UV coatings are discussed in dependency on glass transition temperature and elastically effective chain length between crosslinks.

Abstract

We present the results of a radio continuum survey at 21 cm wavelength of the Galactic plane between 955 240° and -4° ≤ b ≤ +5° with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. The data have been absolutely calibrated by using the Stockert northern sky survey at the same wavelength. This survey complements the Effelsberg 21 cm Galactic plane survey for l ≤ 955 by Reich et al. (1990a). The results are presented as contour maps with a sensitivity of 100 mK T B at an angular resolution (HPBW) of 94. In addition we extend the list of compact sources given by Reich et al. (1990a) by 1830 new entries. These sources have peak flux densities exceeding 160 mK T B (or 79 mJy/beam area) and apparent sizes of less than 16.

Abstract

Research on diathesis-stress models of depression has focused on the sociotropy–dependency and autonomy–self-criticism dimensions of personality as major diathesis factors. Locus of control (LOC) may also act as such a diathesis factor. Since it focuses on control-relevant dimensions of both the environment and the person, it may also relate to congruence or person/situation fit. In a sample of 62 female rheumatoid arthritis patients, depression affect was predicted by the interactions of spousal criticism and spousal support and LOC. Poor health, in the form of activity limitation, predicted depressive affect generally, but for internals greater levels of support were related to greater depression. A person/situation perspective can employ both diathesis-stress and congruence models in investigating mental health.

Abstract

A radio continuum survey at medium Galactic latitudes with the 100−m telescope of the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie is being carried out at a center frequency of 1.4 GHz in total power and linear polarization. We present polarization and depolarization structures detected at medium latititudes with no corresponding observable structure in total power emission. Existence of such kind of polarization structures imply that the emission, due to the Faraday modulation of the Galactic synchrotron foreground, occurs in thin sheetlike regions. This phenomenon is a sign for fluctuating local magnetic field.

Abstract

The characteristic outer scale of turbulence and the ratio of the random to ordered components of the magnetic field are key parameters to characterise magnetic turbulence in the interstellar gas, which affects the propagation of cosmic rays within the Galaxy. We provide new constraints to those two parameters. We use the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) to image the diffuse continuum emission in the Fan region at (l,b) (137.0,+7.0) at 80"x70" resolution in the range [146,174] MHz. We detect multi-scale fluctuations in the Galactic synchrotron emission and compute their power spectrum. Applying theoretical estimates and derivations from the literature for the first time, we derive the outer scale of turbulence and the ratio of random to ordered magnetic field from the characteristics of these fluctuations . We obtain the deepest image of the Fan region to date and find diffuse continuum emission within the primary beam. The power spectrum of the foreground synchrotron fluctuations displays a power law behaviour for scales between 100 and 8 arcmin with a slope of (-1.84+/-0.19). We find an upper limit of about 20 pc for the outer scale of the magnetic interstellar turbulence toward the Fan region. We also find a variation of the ratio of random to ordered field as a function of Galactic coordinates, supporting different turbulent regimes. We use power spectra fluctuations from LOFAR as well as earlier GMRT and WSRT observations to constrain the outer scale of turbulence of the Galactic synchrotron foreground, finding a range of plausible values of 10-20 pc. Then, we use this information to deduce lower limits of the ratio of ordered to random magnetic field strength. These are found to be 0.3, 0.3, and 0.5 for the LOFAR, WSRT and GMRT fields considered respectively. The location and orientation of the aircraft and its control surfaces were measured in-flight using a 60 camera motion capture system while performing pitch up maneuvers related to perching. The result is a simple model of the vehicle lift, drag, and pitching moment coefficients based on traditional component buildup methods.

Abstract

This paper describes the design of bio-mimetic remote controlled airplanes and experiments in perching them. The goal of this research is the development of a biomimetic robotic bird that can alight and rest on a perch. Design starts with the overall architecture including airfoil selection and mass determination given performance requirements. Particular attention is given to the stability analysis since with a bird-like planform with the tail so close to the body and without a vertical tail surface many designs are unstable. The stability matrices are also the basis of the PID controller design. Several foamie planes were built to test different designs and control strategies. Most of the perching experiments used the Dreamflight® Alula glider because it was one of the most bird-like planforms that is available commercially. A catapult launcher and a perch were set up in the AFRL Aviari indoor flight facility which uses motion capture cameras to determine to vehicle state. This allows control algorithms to be developed off-board the plane saving on weight of sensors and on-board computers. Various control strategies were tested from mostly open loop flights, relatively simple PID controllers, to fuzzy logic and dynamic inversion. This paper is limited to the development and testing of the PID controllers.

This paper describes the development and use of a 3-D vortex particle method to rapidly model the time-dependent aerodynamics of wings performing perching manoeuvres where the angle of attack ranges from zero to well above stall. The focus is on bird size Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) where highly three-dimensional flow can occur due to low aspect ratios, post-stall flight, wing flexibility, and planform changes, and strongly time dependent flows can occur due to rapid pitch manoeuvres and even flapping of the wing. To be used as a design tool to optimize trajectories, and the design of the vehicle itself, the aerodynamic model must be fast enough that many trajectories can be simulated in a few hours or days. Once developed the optimal perching trajectories using the 3-d vortex particle method were compared to optimal trajectories calculated using 2-d particle methods, timedelay calculations, and analytical models.

Abstract

A biomimetic composite reconfigurable wing for small unmanned air systems has been designed and tested experimentally in a wind tunnel. Actuation of the wing results in a 30% reduction of wing planform area and 34% decrease in span mimicking wing sweeping motion used by birds for flight control. The wing uses a thin cambered airfoil along the span. Wing sweep motion of 56° was demonstrated under static aerodynamic loads at angles of attack between -5 and +15° at 10 m/s. The wing was fabricated using a variety of materials including carbon fiber and fiberglass composite morphing skins and direct manufactured plastic frame structures. The large shear displacement required by the skin to achieve large wing sweep angles was managed by folding large sections of the skin, similar to folding of bird feathers.

Abstract

International audience; Faraday rotation measurements using the current and next generation of low-frequency radio telescopes will provide a powerful probe of astronomical magnetic fields. However, achieving the full potential of these measurements requires accurate removal of the time-variable ionospheric Faraday rotation contribution. We present ionFR, a code that calculates the amount of ionospheric Faraday rotation for a specific epoch, geographic location, and line-of-sight. ionFR uses a number of publicly available, GPS-derived total electron content maps and the most recent release of the International Geomagnetic Reference Field. We describe applications of this code for the calibration of radio polarimetric observations, and demonstrate the high accuracy of its modeled ionospheric Faraday rotations using LOFAR pulsar observations. These show that we can accurately determine some of the highest-precision pulsar rotation measures ever achieved. Precision rotation measures can be used to monitor rotation measure variations - either intrinsic or due to the changing line-of-sight through the interstellar medium. This calibration is particularly important for nearby sources, where the ionosphere can contribute a significant fraction of the observed rotation measure. We also discuss planned improvements to ionFR, as well as the importance of ionospheric Faraday rotation calibration for the emerging generation of low-frequency radio telescopes, such as the SKA and its pathfinders.

Abstract

Ultrasonic standing-wave atomization using two sonotrodes (20 kHz), both oscillating against each other, allows the disintegration of extremely viscous fluids (synthetic resins, highly concentrated suspensions) or fluids with high surface tension (metal melts) into narrow-sized, extremely small droplets and therefrom the production of fine spherical powders. The fundamentals of this new technique as well as its application in viscous fluid and melt atomization are described. Rapid solidification rates of metal powders (tin particles with mean diameters of less than 10 μm) up to 2 × 10 −6 K/s for achieving ultra-fine cellular microstructures within the powder particles and, thus, for instance, supersaturation effects are further important advantages of this technique.

Abstract

Complex midfacial trauma requires interdisciplinary management. A wide range of reconstructive procedures are needed and if necessary secondary and even tertiary interventions should be performed at the appropriate time. We present the case of a 45-year-old man who was involved in a car accident and presented with severe injuries to the periorbital soft tissue. The focus was on the reconstruction of this sensitive region with regard to functional and aesthetic aspects. In view of the severity of the injuries the final clinical status is considered to be very important. Special issues and pitfalls in the reconstruction of trauma cases and potential management are discussed.

Abstract

LOFAR, the LOw-Frequency ARray, is a new-generation radio interferometer constructed in the north of the Netherlands and across europe. Utilizing a novel phased-array design, LOFAR covers the largely unexplored low-frequency range from 10-240 MHz and provides a number of unique observing capabilities. Spreading out from a core located near the village of Exloo in the northeast of the Netherlands, a total of 40 LOFAR stations are nearing completion. A further five stations have been deployed throughout Germany, and one station has been built in each of France, Sweden, and the UK. Digital beam-forming techniques make the LOFAR system agile and allow for rapid repointing of the telescope as well as the potential for multiple simultaneous observations. With its dense core array and long interferometric baselines, LOFAR achieves unparalleled sensitivity and angular resolution in the low-frequency radio regime. The LOFAR facilities are jointly operated by the International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) foundation, as an observatory open to the global astronomical community. LOFAR is one of the first radio observatories to feature automated processing pipelines to deliver fully calibrated science products to its user community. LOFAR's new capabilities, techniques and modus operandi make it an important pathfinder for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We give an overview of the LOFAR instrument, its major hardware and software components, and the core science objectives that have driven its design. Abstract

Faint undetected sources of radio-frequency interference (RFI) might become visible in long radio observations when they are consistently present over time. Thereby, they might obstruct the detection of the weak astronomical signals of interest. This issue is especially important for Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) projects that try to detect the faint redshifted HI signals from the time of the earliest structures in the Universe. We explore the RFI situation at 30-163 MHz by studying brightness histograms of visibility data observed with LOFAR, similar to radio-source-count analyses that are used in cosmology. An empirical RFI distribution model is derived that allows the simulation of RFI in radio observations. The brightness histograms show an RFI distribution that follows a power-law distribution with an estimated exponent around -1.5. With several assumptions, this can be explained with a uniform distribution of terrestrial radio sources whose radiation follows existing propagation models. Extrapolation of the power law implies that the current LOFAR EoR observations should be severely RFI limited if the strength of RFI sources remains strong after time integration. This is in contrast with actual observations, which almost reach the thermal noise and are thought not to be limited by RFI. Therefore, we conclude that it is unlikely that there are undetected RFI sources that will become visible in long observations. Consequently, there is no indication that RFI will prevent an EoR detection with LOFAR., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Abstract

The Sino-German 6cm polarization survey has mapped in total intensity and polarization intensity over an area of approximately 2200 square degrees in the Galactic disk. This survey provides an opportunity to search for Galactic supernova remnants (SNRs) that were previously unknown. We discovered the new SNRs G178.2-4.2 and G25.1-2.3 which have non-thermal spectra, using the 6cm data together with the observations with the Effelsberg telescope at 11 cm and 21 cm. Both G178.2-4.2 and G25.1-2.3 are faint and have an apparent diameter greater than 1deg. G178.2-4.2 shows a polarized shell. HI data suggest that G25.1-2.3 might have a distance of about 3 kpc. Abstract

Distributed arrays of artificial hair sensors have bio-like sensing capabilities to obtain spatial and temporal surface flow information which is an important aspect of an effective fly-by-feel system. The spatiotemporal surface flow measurement enables further exploration of additional flow features such as flow stagnation, separation, and reattachment points. Due to their inherent robustness and fault tolerant capability, distributed arrays of hair sensors are well equipped to assess the aerodynamic and flow states in adverse conditions. In this paper, a local flow measurement from an array of artificial hair sensors in a wind tunnel experiment is used with a feedforward artificial neural network to predict aerodynamic parameters such as lift coefficient, moment coefficient, free-stream velocity, and angle of attack on an airfoil. We find the prediction error within 6% and 10% for lift and moment coefficients. The error for free-stream velocity and angle of attack were within 0.12 mph and 0.37 degrees. Knowledge of these parameters are key to finding the real time forces and moments which paves the way for effective control design to increase flight agility, stability, and maneuverability.

Abstract

Physical illness and aging processes are two of the major stressors of older adults. Both are life processes that often threaten mental health since the individual is faced with limitations imposed on personal control and autonomy. Such effects might be expected to relate to the individual's own personal beliefs in control. Social support processes play a significant role in adjusting to these stresses, but those processes often are themselves threats to control. Caregivers are motivated to be helpful, but that desire may lead to attempts to take over personal control and autonomy and these may themselves lead to decreases in mental health. Encouragement of reliance on other people is one such behavior common among caregivers. This study employed a Person/Environment Fit model, assessing caregivers' (husbands') reports of other-reliance encouragement toward their ill wives (N = 62). Three subject variables postulated to be important person variables were the subject's internal-external control beliefs, her age, and her health status (illness recency and severity). The results showed that other-reliance encouragement was related to increased age and poorer health, suggesting that caregivers engage in such behaviors for older and more ill spouses. Two multiple regression tests showed that it led to increased distress for younger externals and older internals in relatively good health. However, it led to less distress for subjects who were in poor health if their disease occurrence was more recent. Caregiver behavior effects depend on the context of control dispositions and health status variables; there was evidence that encouraging patients to rely on other people sometimes has helpful mental health benefits.

Abstract

For morphing wing skin applications, low in-plane stiffness is advantageous to reduce the cost of actuation and high out-of-plane stiffness is required to withstand the aerodynamic loads. A proposed solution is to engineer a composite material made of a honeycomb support combined with a multi-state infill that can reduce the Young’s modulus for a low in-plane stiffness. Assuming thin beam theory and using the potential energy formulation, equivalent in-plane Young’s moduli can be calculated for a range of honeycomb cell geometries. The out-of-plane deflection of a representative plate fixed on all edges is calculated using flat plate theory and used to assess the performance of the skin system. To optimize the cell geometry for a given application, the out-of-plane deflection is constrained and the honeycomb cell geometry varied to investigate the design space. Results show that a skin can be designed to have in-plane Young’s moduli similar to the polymer infill and still have a low out-of-plane deflection. However, these results come at the expense of increased skin weight. Further analysis to obtain a more realistic design is done by imposing weight and geometric constraints.Copyright © 2012 by ASME

Abstract

Dispersion in the interstellar medium is a well known phenomenon that follows a simple relationship, which has been used to predict the time delay of dispersed radio pulses since the late 1960s. We performed wide-band simultaneous observations of four pulsars with LOFAR (at 40-190 MHz), the 76-m Lovell Telescope (at 1400 MHz) and the Effelsberg 100-m Telescope (at 8000 MHz) to test the accuracy of the dispersion law over a broad frequency range. In this paper we present the results of these observations which show that the dispersion law is accurate to better than 1 part in 100000 across our observing band. We use this fact to constrain some of the properties of the ISM along the line-of-sight and use the lack of any aberration or retardation effects to determine upper limits on emission heights in the pulsar magnetosphere. Abstract

(Abridged) We study the polarisation properties, magnetic field strength, and synchrotron emission scale-height of Milky-Way-like galaxies in comparison with other spiral galaxies. We use our 3D-emission model of the Milky Way Galaxy for viewing the Milky Way from outside at various inclinations as spiral galaxies are observed. When seen edge-on the synchrotron emission from the Milky Way has an exponential scale-height of about 0.74 kpc, which is much smaller than the values obtained from previous models. We find that current analysis methods overestimate the scale-height of synchrotron emission of galaxies by about 10% at an inclination of 80 degree and about 40% at an inclination of 70 degree because of contamination from the disk. The observed RMs for face-on galaxies derived from high-frequency polarisation measurements approximate to the Faraday depths (FDs) when scaled by a factor of two. For edge-on galaxies, the observed RMs are indicative of the orientation of the large-scale magnetic field, but are not well related with the FDs. Assuming energy equipartition between the magnetic field and particles for the Milky Way results in an average magnetic-field strength, which is about two times larger than the intrinsic value for a K factor of 100. The number distribution of the integrated polarisation percentages of a large sample of unresolved Milky-Way-like galaxies peaks at about 4.2% at 4.8 GHz and at about 0.8% at 1.4GHz. Integrated polarisation angles rotated by 90 degree align very well with the position angles of the major axes, implying that unresolved galaxies do not have intrinsic RMs., 10 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

Abell 2256 is one of the best known examples of a galaxy cluster hosting large-scale diffuse radio emission that is unrelated to individual galaxies. It contains both a giant radio halo and a relic, as well as a number of head-tail sources and smaller diffuse steep-spectrum radio sources. The origin of radio halos and relics is still being debated, but over the last years it has become clear that the presence of these radio sources is closely related to galaxy cluster merger events. Here we present the results from the first LOFAR Low band antenna (LBA) observations of Abell 2256 between 18 and 67 MHz. To our knowledge, the image presented in this paper at 63 MHz is the deepest ever obtained at frequencies below 100 MHz in general. Both the radio halo and the giant relic are detected in the image at 63 MHz, and the diffuse radio emission remains visible at frequencies as low as 20 MHz. The observations confirm the presence of a previously claimed ultra-steep spectrum source to the west of the cluster center with a spectral index of -2.3 \pm 0.4 between 63 and 153 MHz. The steep spectrum suggests that this source is an old part of a head-tail radio source in the cluster. For the radio relic we find an integrated spectral index of -0.81 \pm 0.03, after removing the flux contribution from the other sources. This is relatively flat which could indicate that the efficiency of particle acceleration at the shock substantially changed in the last \sim 0.1 Gyr due to an increase of the shock Mach number. In an alternative scenario, particles are re-accelerated by some mechanism in the downstream region of the shock, resulting in the relatively flat integrated radio spectrum. In the radio halo region we find indications of low-frequency spectral steepening which may suggest that relativistic particles are accelerated in a rather inhomogeneous turbulent region., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in A\&A on April 12, 2012

Abstract

The modeling of uplift pressures within a dam, on the foundation on which it was constructed, and on the interface between the dam and foundation is a critical aspect in the analysis of concrete gravity dams. The procedures for modeling uplift pressures are well established for the traditional hand-calculation methods, but this is not the case for finite element (FE) analysis. In this paper, the procedures for including uplift pressures in the hand-calculation methods, as prescribed by various government agencies, are reviewed and compared. Three separate models for including uplift pressures in a FE analysis are proposed. The use of these models is demonstrated in cracked-base analyses of two different dam geometries with identical material properties. A linear elastic fracture mechanics criterion is used to determine the final crack length rather than the strength criterion used in the hand-calculation methods. The results of these analyses are compared with one another and with results published elsewhere for one of the two geometries but with different material properties.

Abstract

It has been known for many years that the first excited state of $^{229}\mathrm{Th}$ lies close to the ground state. Originally this energy was given as 0.1 keV; later, the authors reported a value of -1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4 eV. In an attempt to improve the value for this level energy, we have remeasured the energies of a number of \ensuremath{\gamma} rays from $^{223}\mathrm{U}$ whose positions in the $^{229}\mathrm{Th}$ level scheme can be used to establish it. Compared with our earlier study, we have considered more \ensuremath{\gamma} rays in $^{229}\mathrm{Th}$, used more well-measured energy calibration and reference lines, used more detectors, used detectors with better low-energy resolution, more closely matched the counting rates in the \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray peaks whose relative energy is measured, and specifically considered certain systematic errors. More than 111 \ensuremath{\gamma}-ray spectra have been measured. From this large set of measurements we have deduced a value of 3.5\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}1.0 eV for the energy of this level.

Abstract

The Curie temperature and layer magnetization of ferromagnetic superlattices with random irregularities in modulation amplitude, thickness of layers and width of interdiffusion zones are studied in an extended version of the Kirkwood approximation. It is found that the increase of the deviation in the modulation amplitude gives rise to localized magnetism and the significant increase in the Curie temperature.

Abstract

Among individuals with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), stress-associated disease flare can severely impact well-being. Psychological factors such as personal mastery may buffer an individual from the negative effects of those flares. We tested the hypothesis that a high sense of personal mastery would prospectively predict stress reactivity. Measures of pain,perceived stress, fatigue, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were collected before, during, and after two interpersonal stressors conducted on 73 individuals with RA. Factor analysis of the personal mastery scale yielded two independent factors: a 5-item "fatalism" component and a 2-item "control" component. Individuals with high fatalism scores reported overall greater joint pain at baseline and those scoring high on control exhibited lower MAP, and reported less stress and fatigue at baseline. After controlling for baseline differences, those high in control exhibited greater MAP increase during stress, and less drop in pain when compared to those low in control. These results suggest that individuals high in control may be more susceptible to the effects of acute stress; however, the overall beneficial aspects of high control outweigh the acute negative effects. Personal mastery may play a role in the experience of pain, stress, and fatigue for people with RA.

Abstract

(Abridged) We conducted new 6cm and 11cm observations of CTA 1 using the Urumqi 25-m and Effelsberg 100-m telescopes. Data at other wavelengths were included to investigate the spectrum and polarisation properties. We obtained new total intensity and polarisation maps at 6cm and 11cm with angular resolutions of 9.5 arcmin and 4.4 arcmin, respectively. We derived a spectral index of alpha=-0.63+/-0.05 based on the integrated flux densities at 408 MHz, 1420 MHz, 2639 MHz, and 4800 MHz. The spectral index map calculated from data at the four frequencies shows a clear steepening of the spectrum from the strong shell emission towards the north-western breakout region with weak diffuse emission. The decrease of the spectral index is up to about 0.3. The RM map derived from polarisation data at 6cm and 11cm shows a sharp transition between positive RMs in the north-eastern and negative RMs in the south-western part of the SNR. We note a corresponding RM pattern of extragalactic sources and propose the existence of a large-diameter Faraday screen in front of CTA 1, which covers the north-eastern part of the SNR. The RM of the Faraday screen is estimated to be about +45 rad/m2. A RM structure function of CTA 1 indicates a very regular magnetic field within the Faraday screen, which is larger than about 2.7 microG in case of 500 pc distance., 9 pages, 12 figures, minor changes, accepted for publication in A&A
