Methane is an important greenhouse gas, responsible for about 20 of the warming induced by long-lived greenhouse gases since pre-industrial times. By reacting with hydroxyl radicals, methane reduces the oxidizing capacity of the atmosphere and generates ozone in the troposphere. Although most sources and sinks of methane have been identified, their relative contributions to atmospheric methane levels are highly uncertain. As such, the factors responsible for the observed stabilization of atmospheric methane levels in the early 2000s, and the renewed rise after 2006, remain unclear. Here, we construct decadal budgets for methane sources and sinks between 1980 and 2010, using a combination of atmospheric measurements and results from chemical transport models, ecosystem models, climate chemistry models and inventories of anthropogenic emissions. The resultant budgets suggest that data-driven approaches and ecosystem models overestimate total natural emissions. We build three contrasting emission scenarios � which differ in fossil fuel and microbial emissions � to explain the decadal variability in atmospheric methane levels detected, here and in previous studies, since 1985. Although uncertainties in emission trends do not allow definitive conclusions to be drawn, we show that the observed stabilization of methane levels between 1999 and 2006 can potentially be explained by decreasing-to-stable fossil fuel emissions, combined with stable-to-increasing microbial emissions. We show that a rise in natural wetland emissions and fossil fuel emissions probably accounts for the renewed increase in global methane levels after 2006, although the relative contribution of these two sources remains uncertain.

The global methane (CH₄) budget is becoming an increasingly important component for managing realistic pathways to mitigate climate change. This relevance, due to a shorter atmospheric lifetime and a stronger warming potential than carbon dioxide, is challenged by the still unexplained changes of atmospheric CH₄ over the past decade. Emissions and concentrations of CH₄ are continuing to increase, making CH₄ the second most important human-induced greenhouse gas after carbon dioxide. Two major difficulties in reducing uncertainties come from the large variety of diffusive CH₄ sources that overlap geographically, and from the destruction of CH₄ by the very short-lived hydroxyl radical (OH). To address these difficulties, we have established a consortium of multi-disciplinary scientists under the umbrella of the Global Carbon Project to synthesize and stimulate research on the methane cycle, and producing regular (~biennial) updates of the global methane budget. This consortium includes atmospheric physicists and chemists, biogeochemists of surface and marine emissions, and socio- conomists who study anthropogenic emissions. Following Kirschke et al. (2013), we propose here the first version of a living review paper that integrates results of top-down studies (exploiting atmospheric observa- tions within an atmospheric inverse-modelling framework) and bottom-up models, inventories and data-driven approaches (including process-based models for estimating land surface emissions and atmospheric chemistry, and inventories for anthropogenic emissions, data-driven extrapolations). For the 2003–2012 decade, global methane emissions are estimated by top-down inversions at 558 Tg CH₄ yr⁻¹, range 540–568. About 60 % of global emissions are anthropogenic (range 50–65 %). Since 2010, the bottom-up global emission inventories have been closer to methane emissions in the most carbon-intensive Representative Concentrations Pathway (RCP8.5) and higher than all other RCP scenarios. Bottom-up approaches suggest larger global emissions (736 Tg CH₄ yr⁻¹range 596–884) mostly because of larger natural emissions from individual sources such as inland waters, natural wetlands and geological sources. Considering the atmospheric constraints on the top-down budget, it is likely that some of the individual emissions reported by the bottom-up approaches are overestimated, leading to too large global emissions. Latitudinal data from top-down emissions indicate a predominance of tropical emissions (~64 % of the global budget, < 30°N) as compared to mid (~32 %, 30–60°N) and high northern latitudes (~4 %, 60–90°N). Top-down inversions consistently infer lower emissions in China (~58 Tg CH₄ yr⁻¹, range 51–72, - 14 %) and higher emissions in Africa (86 Tg CH₄ yr⁻¹, range 73–108, +19 %) than bottom-up values used as prior estimates. Overall, uncertainties for anthropogenic emissions appear smaller than those from natural sources, and the uncertainties on source categories appear larger for top-down inversions than for bottom-up inventories and models. The most important source of uncertainty on the methane budget is attributable to emissions from wetland and other inland waters. We show that the wetland extent could contribute 30–40 % on the estimated range for wetland emissions. Other priorities for improving the methane budget include the following: (i) the development of process-based models for inland-water emissions, (ii) the intensification of methane observations at local scale (flux measurements) to constrain bottom-up land surface models, and at regional scale (surface networks and satellites) to constrain top-down inversions, (iii) improvements in the estimation of atmospheric loss by OH, and (iv) improvements of the transport models integrated in top-down inversions. Biomass burning impacts vegetation dynamics, biogeochemical cycling, atmospheric chemistry, and climate, with sometimes deleterious socio-economic impacts. Under future climate projections it is often expected that the risk of wildfires will increase. Our ability to predict the magnitude and geographic pattern of future fire impacts rests on our ability to model fire regimes, using either well-founded empirical relationships or process-based models with good predictive skill. While a large variety of models exist today, it is still unclear which type of model or degree of complexity is required to model fire adequately at regional to global scales. This is the central question underpinning the creation of the Fire Model Intercomparison Project (FireMIP), an international initiative to compare and evaluate existing global fire models against benchmark data sets for present-day and historical conditions. In this paper we review how fires have been represented in fire-enabled dynamic global vegetation models (DGVMs) and give an overview of the current state of the art in fire-regime modelling. We indicate which challenges still remain in global fire modelling and stress the need for a comprehensive model evaluation and outline what lessons may be learned from FireMIP.

Following the recent Global Carbon Project (GCP) synthesis of the decadal methane (CH₄) budget over 2000–2012 (Saunois et al., 2016), we analyse here the same dataset with a focus on quasi-decadal and inter-annual variability in CH₄ emissions. The GCP dataset integrates results from topdown studies (exploiting atmospheric observations within an atmospheric inverse-modelling framework) and bottom-up models (including process-based models for estimating land surface emissions and atmospheric chemistry), inventories of anthropogenic emissions, and data-driven approaches. The annual global methane emissions from top-down studies, which by construction match the observed methane growth rate within their uncertainties, all show an increase in total methane emissions over the period 2000–2012, but this increase is not linear over the 13 years. Despite differences between individual studies, the mean emission anomaly of the top-down ensemble shows no significant trend in total methane emissions over the period 2000–2006, during the plateau of atmospheric methane mole fractions, and also over the period 2008–2012, during the renewed atmospheric methane increase. However, the top-down ensemble mean produces an emission shift between 2006 and 2008, leading to 22 [16–32] Tg CH₄ yr⁻¹ higher methane emissions over the period 2008–2012 compared to 2002–2006. This emission increase mostly originated from the tropics, with a smaller contribution from mid-latitudes and no significant change from boreal regions. The regional contributions remain uncertain in top-down studies. Tropical South America and South and East Asia seem to contribute the most to the emission increase in the tropics. However, these two regions have only limited atmospheric measurements and remain therefore poorly constrained. The sectorial partitioning of this emission increase between the periods 2002–2006 and 2008–2012 differs from one atmospheric inversion study to another. However, all topdown studies suggest smaller changes in fossil fuel emissions (from oil, gas, and coal industries) compared to the mean of the bottom-up inventories included in this study. This difference is partly driven by a smaller emission change in China from the top-down studies compared to the estimate in the Emission Database for Global Atmospheric Research (EDGARv4.2) inventory, which should be revised to smaller values in a near future. We apply isotopic signatures to the emission changes estimated for individual studies based on five emission sectors and find that for six individual top-down studies (out of eight) the average isotopic signature of the emission changes is not consistent with the observed change in atmospheric ¹³CH₄. However, the partitioning in emission change derived from the ensemble mean is consistent with this isotopic constraint. At the global scale, the top-down ensemble mean suggests that the dominant contribution to the resumed atmospheric CH₄ growth after 2006 comes from microbial sources (more from agriculture and waste sectors than from natural wetlands), with an uncertain but smaller contribution from fossil CH₄ emissions. In addition, a decrease in biomass burning emissions (in agreement with the biomass burning emission databases) makes the balance of sources consistent with atmospheric ¹³CH₄ observations. In most of the top-down studies included here, OH concentrations are considered constant over the years (seasonal variations but without any inter-annual variability). As a result, the methane loss (in particular through OH oxidation) varies mainly through the change in methane concentrations and not its oxidants. For these reasons, changes in the methane loss could not be properly investigated in this study, although it may play a significant role in the recent atmospheric methane changes as briefly discussed at the end of the paper.

Globally, latent heating associated with a change in precipitation is balanced by changes to atmospheric radiative cooling and sensible heat fluxes. Both components can be altered by climate forcing mechanisms and through climate feedbacks, but the impacts of climate forcing and feedbacks on sensible heat fluxes have received much less attention. Here we show, using a range of climate modelling results, that changes in sensible heat are the dominant contributor to the present global-mean precipitation change since preindustrial time, because the radiative impact of forcings and feedbacks approximately compensate. The model results show a dissimilar influence on sensible heat and precipitation from various drivers of climate change. Due to its strong atmospheric absorption, black carbon is found to influence the sensible heat very differently compared to other aerosols and greenhouse gases. Our results indicate that this is likely caused by differences in the impact on the lower tropospheric stability.

Η κλιματική αλλαγή, η ρύπανση του αέρα και γενικότερα η υποβάθμιση του φυσικού περιβάλλοντος αποτελεί ένα από τα πιο επίκαιρα ζητήματα της ανθρωπότητας. Για τον λόγο αυτό η αντικατάσταση των παραδοσιακών ορυκτών καυσίμων με βιώσιμες και καθαρότερες πηγές ενέργειας τα τελευταία χρόνια είναι μονόδρομος. Κατά την παγκόσμια μεταστροφή σε ανανεώσιμες πηγές ενέργειας, παρατηρείται μια συνεχώς αυξανόμενη εξάρτηση από το φυσικό αέριο (με το μεθάνιο να εμπεριέχεται σε ποσοστά τυπικά >90%) καθώς θεωρείται μια αξιόπιστη και προσιτή πηγή ενέργειας που ταυτόχρονα προωθεί και την ανάπτυξη άλλων «πράσινων» πηγών ενέργειας. Το βασικότερο μειονέκτημα της χρήσης του CH4 αφορά τις όλο και αυξανόμενες εκπομπές άκαυστου μεθανίου (της τάξης του 0.1- 1.0%). Είναι γνωστό ότι τόσο το CO2 όσο και το CH4 είναι τα κυριότερα αέρια που σχετίζονται με το φαινόμενο του θερμοκηπίου, ωστόσο το CH4 έχει 25 φορές μεγαλύτερο δυναμικό συμβολής στο φαινόμενο σε σύγκριση με το CO2. Επιπλέον, στην παγκόσμια αέρια ρύπανση ως πολύ σημαντικοί ρύποι θεωρούνται οι πτητικές οργανικές ενώσεις (Volatile Organic Compounds, VOCs), οι οποίες είναι υψηλού κινδύνου ουσίες με σοβαρές επιπτώσεις στην ατμόσφαιρα και στην υγεία του ανθρώπου. Ως εκ τούτου η ανάπτυξη καταλυτών υψηλής δραστικότητας και θερμικής σταθερότητας για την πλήρη οξείδωσή τους και κατ’ επέκταση τον έλεγχο των εκπομπών τους, είναι υψηλής περιβαλλοντικής σημασίας. Στην παρούσα εργασία μελετήθηκε η απόδοση περοβσκιτών La1-xSrxMnO3 και των καταλυτών Ir/La1-xSrxMnO3 ως προς τη βαθιά οξείδωση μεθανίου. Οι φορείς LSxM παρασκευάστηκαν με την μέθοδο της συγκαταβύθισης και η εναπόθεση νανοσωματιδίων Ir στους LSxM πραγματοποιήθηκε με την μέθοδο του υγρού́ εμποτισμού. Η καταλυτική τους δραστικότητα μελετήθηκε σε θερμοκρασιακό εύρος 400-900οC και σε συνθήκες περίσσειας οξυγόνου (1% CH4 + 5 %Ο2 σε ισορροπία με He σε 1 bar) με wGHSV=90 000 mL/g*h (FΤ=75 mL/min). Επιπλέον, μελετήθηκε η απόδοση των περοβσκιτών La1-xSrxMnO3 για την πλήρη οξείδωση C3Η8 και C3H6. Το θερμοκρασιακό εύρος μελέτης τους ήταν 200οC-800oC και 100oC-700οC αντίστοιχα και οι αντιδράσεις πραγματοποιήθηκαν σε συνθήκες περίσσειας οξυγόνου (0.33% C3H8 +5% Ο2 σε ισορροπία με He σε 1 bar) και (0.5% C3H6 + 5% Ο2 σε ισορροπία με He σε 1 bar) με wGHSV=90000 mL/g*h (FΤ=75 mL/min). Η καταλυτική ενεργότητα και η θερμική σταθερότητα των καταλυτών μελετήθηκε βάσει διαφόρων πρωτοκόλλων επεξεργασίας των καταλυτών (δηλ., αναγωγής, οξείδωσης και γήρανσης). Στόχος ήταν η μελέτη της επίδρασης που έχει η σταδιακή αντικατάσταση της Α-θέσης του περοβσκίτη (La) από́ Sr στις ιδιότητες του και στην καταλυτική́ του συμπεριφορά́ στις υπό́ μελέτη αντιδράσεις. Επιπλέον, για να πραγματοποιηθεί μία συσχέτιση της δομής των περοβσκιτών και της ενεργότητας τους αξιολογήθηκαν οι φυσικοχημικές και δομικές ιδιότητες των υλικών μέσω διαφόρων τεχνικών χαρακτηρισμού ( XRD, BET-BJH, H2-TPR, H2- Chem). Από τα αποτελέσματα των πειραμάτων της καταλυτικής οξείδωσης του μεθανίου, διαπιστώθηκε ότι η βασική παράμετρος που επηρεάζει τη δραστικότητα των καταλυτικών υλικών που μελετήθηκαν, ήταν ο βαθμός (Χ) αντικατάστασης της θέσης Α=La από το Sr και όχι τόσο η προσθήκη του Ir, το οποίο προκάλεσε μικρή αναστολή της δραστικότητας, αντί για ενίσχυση, όταν βρισκόταν σε οξειδωμένη κατάσταση (IrO2) ενώ αξιοσημείωτη αλλά όχι μεγάλη ενίσχυση όταν βρισκόταν στη μεταλλική του κατάσταση (Ir0). Οι κύριοι παράγοντες μέσω των οποίων η παράμετρος Χ επηρέασε τη δραστικότητα των υλικών, ήταν οι αλλαγές που προκλήθηκαν στην ειδική επιφάνεια των υλικών και την αναγωγιμότητα, παράμετροι που δρουν συνεργατικά. Η ενεργότητα των υλικών ακολούθησε μια ανεστραμμένη ηφαιστειακή συμπεριφορά ως συνάρτηση του Χ με τους πιο ενεργούς καταλύτες να είναι το ζεύγος LS00M-Ir/LS00M και τους λιγότερο ενεργούς το ζεύγος LS50M-Ir/LS50M. Καταγράφηκαν μεγάλες διαφορές στην T50 (περίπου 300oC) μεταξύ των καταλυτών με τη μεγαλύτερη και μικρότερη δραστικότητα. Η ανασταλτική επίδραση που προκάλεσε η προσθήκη Ir στην ενεργότητα του περοβσκίτη LSxM αποδόθηκε σε μερικό φράξιμο των πόρων και κατά συνέπεια σε μείωση του αριθμού των ενεργών θέσεων, σε συνδυασμό με τη χαμηλή ενεργότητα των σωματιδίων IrO2. Για τους προ-ανηγμένους καταλύτες, η μεταλλική κατάσταση του ιριδίου (Ir0) ενίσχυσε τη δραστικότητα, ιδίως σε χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες. Στην περίπτωση της καταλυτικής οξείδωσης των VOCs, C3H8 και C3H6 σε περοβσκίτες LSxM, διαπιστώθηκε ότι τόσο η σύνθεση του περοβσκίτη LSXM (δηλ., το ποσοστό αντικατάστασης του La από Sr, x) όσο και η οξειδωμένη ή ανηγμένη κατάσταση αποτελούν παραμέτρους που προκαλούν διαφοροποιήσεις στην καταλυτική ενεργότητα των υλικών, προκαλώντας μετατοπίσεις στην T50 έως και ~100oC. Η επίδραση της παραμέτρου x στη δραστικότητα είχε μια ανεστραμμένη ηφαιστειακή συμπεριφορά, με πιο δραστικό σε όλες τις περιπτώσεις τον περοβσκίτη με Χ = 0% (δηλ. LS00M = LaMnO3) και λιγότερο δραστικό τον περοβσκίτη με Χ = 50% (δηλ. LS50M). Φαινόμενα υστέρησης κατά τη διάρκεια των κύκλων heating/cooling – όπως και στην περίπτωση της καταλυτικής οξείδωσης του CH4- εμφανίστηκαν μόνο στην περίπτωση των προ-ανηγμένων καταλυτών, ενώ στα προ-οξειδωμένα υλικά οι καμπύλες light-off και light-out συνέπιπταν πιστά μεταξύ τους. Τέλος, και για τους τρεις αέριους ρύπους, διαπιστώθηκε ότι η σταθερότητα των υλικών μετά από 12ωρη συνεχή λειτουργία ήταν γενικά καλή καθώς παρατηρήθηκε έως 10% μείωση της δραστικότητας τους., Climate change, air pollution and the degradation of the natural environment in general is one of humanity's most pressing issues. For this reason, the replacement of traditional fossil fuels with sustainable and cleaner energy sources in recent years is a one-way street. During the global transition to renewable energy sources, there is an ever-increasing reliance on natural gas (with methane typically >90%) as it is considered a reliable and affordable alternative source that simultaneously promotes the development of "green" energy sources. The main disadvantage of using CH4 concerns the ever-increasing emissions of unburned methane (of the order of 0.1-1.0%). It is known that both CO2 and CH4 are the main gases associated with the greenhouse effect, however CH4 has a 25 times greater potential contribution to the phenomenon compared to CO2. Moreover, in the global air pollution, volatile organic compounds are considered to be very important pollutants, which are high-risk substances with serious impact on the atmosphere and human health. Therefore, the development of highly active and thermally stable catalysts for their complete oxidation and therefore the control of their emissions, is of high environmental importance. On this thesis, the performance of perovskites La1-xSrxMnO3 and the Ir/La1-xSrxMnO3 catalysts was studied towards deep methane oxidation. LSxM supports were synthesized by co-precipitation method and the addition of 2 wt% Ir to LSxM supports was incorporated by the wet impregnation method. This study was carried out in a temperature range between 400-900οC and under conditions of oxygen excess (1% CH4 + 5% O2 in balance with He, 1 bar) with wGHSV=90000 mL/g*h (FΤ=75 mL/min). Additionally, the performance of La1-xSrxMnO3 perovskites was studied for the complete oxidation of C3H8 and C3H6. The temperature range was between 200oC-800oC and 100 oC-700oC respectively and the reactions were carried out under conditions of oxygen excess (0.33% C3H8 + 5% O2 in equilibrium with He, 1 bar) and (0.5% C3H6 + 5% O2 in balance with He, at 1 bar) with wGHSV=90000 mL/g*h (FΤ=75 mL/min). The catalytic activity and thermal stability of the catalysts were studied based on different catalyst processing protocols (i.e., reduction, oxidation, and aging). The thesis aims to investigate the effect of gradual replacement of the A-site of perovskite (La) from Sr, on its properties and on its catalytic behavior in the reactions in question. In addition, to establish a correlation between the structure of perovskites and their activity, the physicochemical and structural properties of the materials were evaluated by various catalyst characterization techniques (XRD, BET-BJH, H2-TPR, H2- Chem). According to the results of the experiments on the catalytic oxidation of methane, it was found that the main parameter affecting the activity of the studied catalytic materials was the degree (X) of substitution of the A=La position by Sr and not so much the addition of Ir, the latter caused a small inhibition of activity, rather than an enhancement, when in the oxidized state (IrO2 ) while a noticeable but not large enhancement was observed when it was in its metallic state (Ir0). The main factors, through which the parameter X affected the reactivity of the materials, were the changes induced in the specific surface area of the materials and the reducibility, parameters that act cooperatively. The activity of the materials followed an inverse volcanic behavior as a function of X with the most active catalysts being the pair LS00M-Ir/LS00M and the least active being the pair LS50M-Ir/LS50M. Large differences in T50 (about 300oC) were recorded between the highest and lowest activity catalysts. The inhibitory effect caused by the addition of Ir on the activity of LSxM perovskite was attributed to a partial blocking of the pores and consequently a reduction in the number of active sites, combined with the low activity of the IrO2 particles. For the pre-reduced catalysts, the reactive metallic state of iridium (Ir0) enhanced the activity, especially at low temperatures. In the case of the catalytic oxidation of VOCs, C3H8 and C3H6 in LSxM perovskites, it was found that both the composition of the LSXM perovskite (i.e., the rate of substitution of La by Sr, x) and the oxidized or reduced state are parameters that cause variations in catalytic activity of the materials, causing shifts in T50 up to ~100oC. The effect of the x parameter on reactivity had an inverted volcanic behavior, with the most active in all cases being the perovskite with X = 0% (i.e. LS00M = LaMnO3) and the least active being the perovskite with X = 50% (i.e. LS50M. Phenomena hysteresis during the heating/cooling cycles - as in the case of the catalytic oxidation of CH4 - appeared only in the case of the pre-reduced catalysts, while in the pre-oxidized materials the light-off and light-out curves closely coincided with each other. Finally, for all three gaseous pollutants, it was found that the stability of the materials after 12 hours of continuous operation was generally good as up to 10% reduction in their activity was observed.

Τα παγκόσμια μοντέλα χερσαίων διεργασιών (Land Surface Models), προσομοιώνουν διάφορες διεργασίες που λαμβάνουν χώρα στην επιφάνεια του εδάφους, σχετικές με το ισοζύγιο ενέργειας, τον υδρολογικό κύκλο, τον κύκλο του άνθρακα κ.ά. Έχουν αναπτυχθεί για μία πληθώρα εφαρμογών, μεταξύ αυτών η αξιολόγηση του αντίκτυπου της αλλαγής μιας συγκεκριμένης διαδικασίας στο συνολικό οικοσύστημα, π.χ. του αντίκτυπου της κλιματικής αλλαγής στην υδρολογία και της μελέτης πιθανών αλληλεπιδράσεων. Λόγω της μεγάλης πολυπλοκότητάς τους, η εξέλιξη αυτών των μοντέλων είναι μια διαρκής και εργώδης διαδικασία, όπως για παράδειγμα η περίπτωση του μοντέλου JULES (Joint UK Land Environment Simulator), που αναπτύχθηκε και εξελίσσεται από μια ευρεία κοινότητα ερευνητών. Είναι γεγονός, ότι παρόλο το υψηλό επίπεδο εξέλιξης του μοντέλου, ορισμένες διεργασίες αντιμετωπίζουν φειδωλή παραμετροποίηση. Μία από αυτές τις διεργασίες είναι η διόδευση της επιφανειακής απορροής, όπως αυτή προσομοιώνεται από το υπό-σύστημα TRIP (Total Runoff Integrating Pathways). Στην παγκόσμιας κλίμακας παραμετροποίησή του το TRIP χρησιμοποιεί ενιαία χαρακτηριστικά ταχύτητας απορροής και μαιανδρισμού για όλη τη χερσαία επιφάνεια της γης, ανεξαρτήτως των πραγματικών φυσιογραφικών ιδιαιτεροτήτων κάθε περιοχής. Σκοπός της παρούσας εργασίας είναι η βελτίωση της διόδευσης της επιφανειακής απορροής, μέσω της βελτιστοποίησης των παραμέτρων ταχύτητας ροής και συντελεστή μαιανδρισμού, σε ένα δείγμα 360 λεκανών απορροής, και η έπειτα συσχέτιση αυτών με φυσιογραφικά χαρακτηριστικά της εκάστοτε λεκάνης, με στόχο τη δυνατότητα γενίκευσης σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα. Τα δεδομένα που υποστήριξαν την ανάπτυξη της μεθοδολογίας βελτιστοποίησης ήταν καταγεγραμμένες παροχές από την παγκόσμια βάση GRDC και φυσιογραφικά χαρακτηριστικά του HydroATLAS. Ένα παραγοντικό πείραμα εκτελέστηκε, μελετώντας συνδυαστικά είκοσι τιμές ταχύτητας ροής και δώδεκα συντελεστές μαιανδρισμού, καταλήγοντας σε 198 προσομοιώσεις. Ο δείκτης Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) χρησιμοποιήθηκε για την αξιολόγηση των παροχών του μοντέλου για κάθε σετ παραμέτρων διόδευσης. Αναπτύχθηκαν δύο μέθοδοι βελτιστοποίησης, με την πρώτη να επιλέγει το σετ με την καλύτερη βελτίωση του NSE σε σχέση με την απόκλιση των παραμέτρων από τις προκαθορισμένες, και τη δεύτερη να αναθέτει ενιαία τιμή παραμέτρων βάσει κατηγοριοποίησης των λεκανών. Στη συνέχεια, με τη χρήση ενός νευρωνικού δικτύου προσαρμογής και ενός κατηγοριοποίησης, για κάθε μέθοδο αντίστοιχα, συσχετίστηκαν οι βέλτιστες παράμετροι διόδευσης με φυσιογραφικά χαρακτηριστικά κάθε λεκάνης. Τα εκπαιδευμένα νευρωνικά δίκτυα, εφαρμόσθηκαν στις λεκάνες απορροής του HydroATLAS για την παρέκταση της εκάστοτε μεθόδου σε παγκόσμια κλίμακα. Τα χωρικά κατανεμημένα βέλτιστα σετ παραμέτρων διόδευσης, από κάθε μέθοδο, είναι διαθέσιμα για εισαγωγή στο υπό-σύστημα TRIP, προσφέροντας τη δυνατότητα βελτιωμένης διόδευσης της παγκόσμιας απορροής, καθώς και της συνολικής αναπαράστασης του υδρολογικού κύκλου του JULES., Land Surface Models (LSMs) simulate various processes of the terrestrial land surface related to the energy balance, the hydrological cycle, the carbon cycle, etc. LSMs have been developed for a variety of applications, including assessing the impact of modifying a particular process on the ecosystem as a whole, e.g., the impact of climate change on hydrology, and studying potential feedback. Due to their great complexity, the development of these models is a continuous and laborious process. For example, the JULES (Joint UK Land Environment Simulator) model is developed by a broad community of inter-disciplinary researchers. It is a fact that despite the high level of model development, some processes face parsimonious parameterization. One of these processes is the routing of surface runoff as simulated by the TRIP (Total Runoff Integrating Pathways) scheme. In its current global parameterization, TRIP uses uniform velocity and meandering characteristics for the entire land surface regardless of the actual physiographic characteristics of each river basin. This work aims to improve the routing of the surface runoff through the optimization of the effective velocity and meandering ratio parameters. In a sample of 360 global river basins, these parameters are correlated with physiographic characteristics to derive a method of extrapolation at the global scale. The development and application of the method were based on observed river discharge from the global GRDC database and basin-scale physiographic attributes from the HydroATLAS database. A factorial experiment was performed from a combination of 20 setups of effective velocity values and 12 meandering ratios, resulting in a total of 198 simulations. The Nash-Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) was employed to assess the model performance for each set of routing parameters. Two optimization methods were developed; in the first method, the optimum routing parameters are defined for the best NSE improvement with the least deviation from the default routing parameters, whereas in the second method a uniform parameter set was assigned based on a categorization of the basins. Neural Networks were used for regression and classification, respectively for each method, correlating the optimal routing parameters with physiographic attributes at the river basin scale. The trained neural networks were applied to the HydroATLAS attributes to extrapolate the routing parameters at the global scale. The spatially distributed optimal routing parameters from each method are available as input into the TRIP scheme, enabling the improved routing of the global runoff and the overall representation of the hydrological cycle in the JULES model.

Μια από τις σημαντικότερες αντιδράσεις στην ετερογενή κατάλυση είναι η οξείδωση του CO, δηλαδή η διαδικασία μετατροπής του σε CO2. Ο κατάλληλος συνδυασμός μετάλλου/φορέα είναι πολύ σημαντικός ώστε να υπάρξει μέγιστη απόδοση μετατροπής CO σε χαμηλές θερμοκρασίες. Το Ir (Ιρίδιο) είναι ένα σχετικά φθηνό ευγενές μέταλλο και ένα πολλά υποσχόμενο υλικό στον τομέα της περιβαλλοντικής κατάλυσης, καθώς και για την αντίδραση της οξείδωσης του CO. Μετά από πρόσφατες μελέτες τα σωματίδια Ir ΄΄σταθεροποιούνται΄΄ σε υψηλές θερμοκρασίες σε οξειδωτικές συνθήκες. Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία μελετήθηκαν πειραματικά οι καταλυτικές ιδιότητες των περοβσκιτικών οξειδίων με χημικό τύπο La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0, 0,3, 0,5 και 0,7) (ή LSMxx) σε ρόλο φορέα σε συνδυασμό με την ενεργή φάση του ευγενούς μετάλλου Ir. Οι καταλύτες Ir/La1-xSrxMnO3 μελετήθηκαν σε εύρος θερμοκρασιών 100-450oC σε συνθήκες περίσσειας οξυγόνου. Οι φορείς LSM παρασκευάστηκαν με την μέθοδο της συν-καταβύθισης ενώ η προσθήκη 2%wt Ir στους φορείς LSM έγινε με την μέθοδο του υγρού εμποτισμού. Η καταλυτική ενεργότητα τους μελετήθηκε σε διαφορετικές συνθήκες προ-επεξεργασίας (σε αναγωγικές και οξειδωτικές συνθήκες). Επιπλέον μελετήθηκε η θερμική σταθερότητα τους μετά από την εφαρμογή συγκεκριμένων πρωτοκόλλων γήρανσης. Παράλληλα μέσω διαφόρων τεχνικών χαρακτηρισμού (μέθοδος Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), προσδιορισμός κρυσταλλικής δομής με τη μέθοδο σκέδασης ακτινών Χ σε σκόνη (XRD) και θερμοπρογραμματιζόμενη αναγωγή με υδρογόνο (H2-TPR) ) έγινε προσπάθεια να κατανοηθεί ο τρόπος που σχετίζεται η δομή, η δραστικότητα και η σταθερότητα των Ir/LSMxx. Σύμφωνα με τα αποτελέσματα των πειραμάτων, διαπιστώθηκε ότι, οι καταλύτες Ir/LSMxx είναι ιδιαίτερα αποτελεσματικοί στην οξείδωση του CO στο θερμοκρασιακό εύρος 100-450oC. Οι καταλύτες Ir/LSMxx ήταν σημαντικά πιο αποτελεσματικοί από τους LSMxx και ιδιαίτερα στην προ-ανηγμένη τους κατάσταση. Τα αποτελέσματα αυτά είναι ιδιαίτερα υποσχόμενα για μελλοντική εφαρμογή των υλικών αυτών σε άλλες αντιδράσεις., One of the most important reactions in the catalytic converter and in the heterogeneous is the oxidation of CO, i.e. the process of its conversion to CO2. The right metal/support combination is very important for maximum CO conversion efficiency at low temperatures. Ir (Iridium) is a relatively inexpensive noble metal and a very promising material in the field of environmental catalysis, as well as for the oxidation reaction of CO. According to recent studies, Ir particles are "stabilized" at high temperatures in excess oxygen. In the present thesis the catalytic properties of the perovskite oxides with chemical formula La1-xSrxMnO3 (x=0, 0,3, 0,5 and 0,7) (or LSMxx) in a support role in combination with the active phase of the noble metal Ir. The Ir/La1-xSrxMnO3 catalysts were studied in the temperature range of 100-450oC under conditions of excess oxygen. LSM supports were synthesized by co-precipitation, Iridium loading of 2wt% was incorporated on the LSM supports using the conventional wet impregnation method. Their catalytic activity was studied under different pretreatment conditions (in reducing and oxidizing conditions). At the same time, catalyst characterization techniques (by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) method and hydrogen temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR) ), an attempt was made to understand how it is related the structure, activity and stability of Ir/LSMxx. Catalytic activity and stability experiments were performed on pre-oxidized, pre-reducing and aging catalysts. According to the results of the experiments, Ir/LSMxx catalysts were found to be particularly effective in CO oxidation in the temperature range 100-450oC. The Ir/LSMxx catalyst was significantly more active than the LSMxx and particularly in their pre-reduced situation. The increase in Sr content in LSM supports does not further enhance the catalytic oxidation of CO, however it reduces the hysteresis phenomena observed in CO oxidation. In addition, it was found that, despite the aging of the catalysts at high temperatures (600 & 750oC) in conditions of excess O2, Ir/LSMxx almost show excellent thermal stability. These results are very promising for future application of these materials in other reactions.

Η ερυθρά ιλύς (ΕΙ) αποτελεί το κύριο στερεό παραπροϊόν της βιομηχανίας παραγωγής αλουμινίου και ειδικότερα προκύπτει από την επεξεργασία του βωξίτη με τη μέθοδο Bayer για την εξαγωγή της αλουμίνας, πρόδρομης χημικής ένωσης του αλουμίνιου. Εξαιτίας της ετερογένειας και της πληθώρας ορυκτών και χημικών στοιχείων που εμπεριέχει το πέτρωμα, η ΕΙ καταλήγει να διαθέτει, λόγω και των αντιδράσεων που λαμβάνουν χώρα κατά τη διύλιση του βωξίτη, πολύπλοκη ορυκτολογική και χημική σύσταση, σε συνδυασμό με υψηλό pH και λεπτόκοκκα σωματίδια. Κατά κανόνα, στα κύρια συστατικά της ΕΙ επικρατούν μεταλλικά οξείδια του σιδήρου, αλουμινίου, νατρίου, ασβεστίου και πυριτίου, ενώ εμπεριέχονται μέταλλα ιδιαίτερα υψηλής τεχνολογικής και οικονομικής σημασίας, που ανήκουν στις σπάνιες γαίες. Αντικείμενο της παρούσας εργασίας είναι η αξιολόγηση της υδροθερμικής έκπλυσης της ερυθράς ιλύος, ως αποτελεσματική μέθοδο για την ανάκτηση των περιεχόμενων μετάλλων, σκάνδιο (Sc) και ύττριο (Y). Ερευνήθηκαν οι βέλτιστες συνθήκες θερμοκρασίας και χρόνου επεξεργασίας, αλλά και συγκέντρωσης ανόργανου οξέος και EDTA, στην επιλεκτική ανάκτηση Sc και Y. Διεξήχθησαν πειράματα υδροθερμικής έκπλυσης του σκανδίου και υττρίου, που διήρκησαν 0.5, 1, 2 και 24 h υπό υποκρίσιμες συνθήκες (120, 140 και 160 °C), σε αντιδραστήρες διαλείποντος έργου χωρητικότητας 100 ml. Σε κάθε δοκιμή ο λόγος στερεού/υγρού διατηρήθηκε σταθερός και ίσος με 1 g ΕΙ ανά 20 ml υδατικού διαλύματος HCl, H2SO4 και HNO3, μοριακότητας 0.05, 0.1 και 0.2 Μ. Η επίδραση του EDTA στην απόδοση και επιλεκτικότητα έκπλυσης, διερευνήθηκε σε συγκεντρώσεις 0.002, 0.009, 0.017 και 0.034 Μ EDTA. Οι παραπάνω δοκιμές κατέδειξαν ότι η έκπλυση ΕΙ διάρκειας 1 ώρας σε θερμοκρασία 140 °C και με χρήση H2SO4 0.2 Μ, οδήγησε σε σημαντικά αποτελέσματα ανάκτησης Sc (79%) και Y (100%). Η καλύτερη επιλεκτικότητα προς σπάνιες γαίες ελήφθη για έκπλυση με HNO3 συγκέντρωσης 0.2 Μ στους 140 °C, παρ’ ότι οι αποδόσεις του Sc και Y ήταν μόνο 28% και 34%, αντίστοιχα. Αναφορικά με τα πειράματα της κινητικής, χρόνος επαφής 1 h επαρκεί για ικανοποιητικά ποσοστά ανάκτησης Sc και Y, καθώς περαιτέρω αύξηση του χρόνου επαφής, προκαλεί σημαντική ελάττωση του βαθμού έκπλυσης του Sc, που πιθανολογείται στο σχηματισμό αδιάλυτου οξειδίου. Eπιχειρώντας την ενίσχυση της επιλεκτικότητας και απόδοσης έκπλυσης των σπάνιων γαιών στα ανωτέρω διαλύματα με προσθήκη EDTA, δεν διαπιστώθηκε ουσιαστική βελτίωση της ανάκτησης. Τέλος, με στόχο την διερεύνηση του μηχανισμού έκπλυσης που οδηγεί σε επιλεκτική ανάκτηση των σπάνιων μετάλλων έναντι του Fe και Ti, έλαβε χώρα χαρακτηρισμός του υλικού, πραγματοποιώντας τις τεχνικές της χημικής ανάλυσης (ICP-MS), της περίθλασης ακτίνων X (XRD), της θερμοβαρυμετρικής ανάλυσης (TGA) και της ηλεκτρονικής μικροσκοπίας σάρωσης (SEM-EDS)., Red mud (RM) is the main solid by-product of the aluminum industry and in particular results from the treatment of bauxite by the Bayer method for the extraction of alumina, a precursor of aluminum. Due to the heterogeneity and the abundance of minerals and chemical elements that the rock carries, RM ends up having, also due to the reactions that take place during the refining of bauxite, a complex mineralogical and chemical composition, combined with high pH and fine-grained particles. Mainly in the main components of RM, metal oxides of iron, aluminum, sodium, calcium and silicon predominate, while there are also metals of very high technological and economic importance, which belong to the rare earths. The object of the present work is the evaluation of hydrothermal leaching of red mud, as an effective method for the recovery of metal contents, scandium (Sc) and yttrium (Y). The optimal conditions of temperature and processing time as well as concentration of inorganic acid and EDTA in the selective recovery of Sc and Y, were investigated. Hydrothermal tests of scandium and yttrium leaching, lasting 0.5, 1, 2 and 24 h under subcritical conditions (120,140 and 160 °C), were performed in 100 ml batch reactors. In each test, the solid / liquid ratio was kept constant and equal to 1 g RM per 20 ml of aqueous solution of HCl, H2SO4 and HNO3 of molar concentration equal to 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2 M. The effect of EDTA on leaching performance and selectivity was investigated at concentrations 0.002, 0.009, 0.017 and 0.034 M EDTA. The above tests showed that using 0.2 M H2SO4 for leaching RM for 1 hour at 140 °C, led to significant results of Sc (79%) and Y (100%) recovery rates. The best selectivity for rare earths was obtained for leaching with 0.2 M HNO3 at 140 °C, although the yields of Sc and Y were only 28% and 34%, respectively. Regarding kinetic experiments, a contact time of 1 h is sufficient for satisfactory recovery rates of Sc and Y, as a further increase in contact time causes a significant decrease in the degree of leaching of Sc, which is likely to form insoluble oxide. Attempting to enhance the selectivity and leaching efficiency of the rare earths in the above solution by adding EDTA, no significant improvement in recovery was found. Finally, in order to investigate the leaching mechanism that leads to selective recovery of rare metals against Fe and Ti, characterization of the material took place, performing the techniques of chemical analysis (ICP-MS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS).

Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζονται οι μέθοδοι επεξεργασίας και αξιοποίησης των παραγόμενων βιοαποβλήτων του Δήμου Αγίου Δημητρίου (Αττικής). Ο Δήμος Αγίου Δημητρίου αποτελεί έναν πολυπληθή Δήμο και η έρευνα για τη διαχείριση των βιοαποβλήτων θεωρείται επιβεβλημένη. Στο ερευνητικό μέρος της εργασίας συντάχθηκε ένα ερωτηματολόγιο 32 ερωτήσεων, το οποίο απευθυνόταν σε δημότες του Δήμου Αγίου Δημητρίου. Το περιεχόμενο των ερωτήσεων ήταν βασισμένο στην αξιολόγηση της υφιστάμενης κατάστασης αποκομιδής των απορριμμάτων και καθαριότητας του Δήμου καθώς και για τις γνωστές μεθόδους επεξεργασίας των αποβλήτων. Στη συνέχεια εισήχθη ο όρος των βιοαποβλήτων στο ερωτηματολόγιο με στόχο την ενημέρωση των πολιτών για τα περιεχόμενα είδη των αποβλήτων καθώς και τους τρόπους επεξεργασίας τους. Τέλος, στόχος του ερωτηματολογίου ήταν να ερευνηθεί η γνώμη των κατοίκων για την ανέγερση μίας εγκατάστασης επεξεργασίας των βιοαποβλήτων στον Δήμο Αγίου Δημητρίου. Στη συνέχεια, αναλύθηκαν οι δύο προτεινόμενες μέθοδοι επεξεργασίας των βιοαποβλήτων «Κομποστοποίηση» και «Αναερόβια Χώνευση», αναφέρθηκαν τα βήματα επεξεργασίας των βιοαποβλήτων, καθώς και τα παραγόμενα προϊόντα, compost και βιοαέριο. Με βάση τις διεργασίες που είχαν ήδη περιγραφεί έγινε μία προσέγγιση υπολογισμού των προϊόντων σύμφωνα με τα δεδομένα – βιοαπόβλητα του Αγίου Δημητρίου. Ενδεικτικά, αναφέρεται ότι από τις παραγόμενες ποσότητες βιοαποβλήτων του Δήμου Αγίου Δημητρίου υπολογίστηκε ότι παράγονται 2646.54 tn/ έτος compost και αντίστοιχα 106 m3/ έτος μεθανίου. Τέλος, τα οφέλη που προκύπτουν από την επεξεργασία των βιοαποβλήτων είναι πολυάριθμα για το περιβάλλον και την οικονομία. Η επιλογής της βέλτιστης διεργασίας για τα βιοαπόβλητα του Δήμου Αγίου Δημητρίου αποτελεί σημαντικό μέρος της παρούσας εργασίας. Επιπλέον, εξετάζονται οι τρόποι βελτίωσης των διεργασιών με στόχο την αύξηση των παραγόμενων ποσοτήτων – προϊόντων, ενώ παράλληλα τονίζεται η σημαντικότητα της ενημέρωσης των πολιτών για την επίτευξη της Διαλογής στην Πηγή μέσω διαφόρων εργαλείων., In the present study, it was examined the management methods of biowaste produced in the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios (Attica). The Municipality of Agios Dimitrios is a large municipality and therefore the research on biowaste management is considered imperative. Initially, a questionnaire of 32 questions was prepared, which was addressed to citizens of the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios. The content of the questions assessed the current situation of waste collection and the level of cleanliness of the Municipality as well as the known methods of waste treatment. Then, the definition of biowaste was introduced in the questionnaire to inform the citizens about the contents of the wastes as well their treatment. Another goal of the questionnaire was to seek their opinion for the construction of a biowaste treatment plant in the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios. Also, the two proposed methods of treatment of biowaste "Composting" and "Anaerobic Digestion" were analyzed, whereas the steps of biowaste treatment as well as the produced products, compost and biogas were analyzed. In addition, based on the processes that had described, a product calculation approach was made according to the data - bio-waste of Agios Dimitrios. From the produced quantities of biowaste of the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios it was estimated that 2646.54 tn / year of compost is produced and approximately 106 m3/ year of methane. Finally, the benefits of biowaste treatment are numerous for the environment and the economy. The selection of the optimal process for biowaste management for the Municipality of Agios Dimitrios is an important part of this work. In addition, the ways of improving the processes with the aim of increasing the produced quantities - products are examined, while at the same time the importance of informing the citizens for the achievement of the Sorting at the Source through various tools is emphasized.

The effects of aerosols on local and remote climates are myriad and complex. They are incompletely understood, particularly those due to aerosols from tropical regions. The health impacts are poorly constrained, with the future effects uncertain. Prior studies neglected the impacts of African and tropical aerosol perturbations, and the impacts of single continents following different transient emissions scenarios have not been explored. The new generation of climate models simulate the processes which mediate aerosol-driven changes in atmospheric composition and the climate in unprecedented detail. The Shared Socioeconomic Pathway emissions scenarios provide coherent narratives for future anthropogenic emissions and demographics, with much broader projected ranges in aerosol emissions than prior scenarios. To address some of these gaps, this PhD uses the recent UKESM1 model to investigate the climate and health impacts of idealised perturbations to tropical and African aerosol emissions, and scenarios of 21st century African aerosol and CO2 emissions. Tropical carbonaceous aerosol is found to cause overall warming in UKESM1 due to Black Carbon absorption, with surface cooling locally. This cooling persists when including additional CO2 emissions from Africa. The aerosols drive complex responses in precipitation, including significant Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone shifts and rainfall decreases due to atmospheric energy budget changes. Differing African emissions scenarios affect temperature and precipitation extremes, with variations from the mean responses. PM2.5 and O3 decrease globally into the future, remaining more constant in Africa. The human health impacts of air pollution therefore decrease when using present-day populations, but increase when using future projections. O3's impact is currently lower than PM2.5’s, but this switches under strong mitigation. This project contributes to the understanding of the effect of tropical aerosols on the climate, both from idealised experiments and realistic scenarios, and shows the substantial impact of high air pollutant emissions in Africa in the 21st century. Smouldering peat-wildfires are the largest fires on earth and are responsible for vast economic damage, negative health effects, and significant quantities of greenhouse gas emissions. Despite their importance, limited research has focused on understanding their dynamics. Here I systematically study the influence of the three most important soil conditions: moisture content, inorganic content, and density, as well as three prevalent natural environmental conditions: wind, slope and temperature. Two novel experimental rigs were developed to study these conditions: the shallow reactor, which facilitating the simultaneous measurement of both horizontal and in-depth spread, and the Experimental Low-temperature Smouldering Apparatus (ELSA) which enables, for the first time, the experimental study of arctic wildfires by studying smouldering in low temperature conditions. The data generated is such that I put forward a new unifying theory of the governing parameters of smouldering spread which explains the influence of all three major soil properties. Horizontal spread was found to be controlled by heat sink density (the energy required to heat the soil to burning temperatures), while in-depth spread was governed by the organic density. The study of wind and slope revealed that forward and uphill spread significantly influenced horizontal spread rates due to improved heat transfer and oxygen supply, while downhill slopes and wind opposite to the spread direction had no significant effect. Evidence was found to suggest that spread on a slope can be explained as a function of the angle of spread direction relative to a horizontal plane. For the first time, I revealed that decreased soil temperatures resulted in deeper depth of burning, and heat losses reduced the critical moisture content from 160% (with an insulated reactor base) to 120% (with a cold reactor base). Spread rate and peak temperature where negligibly affected by soil temperature, even sustaining in frozen soil conditions. This thesis provides a comprehensive study of factors influencing smouldering wildfires, providing insight and data which support a new theory of smouldering spread, improving our understanding of smouldering dynamics. Ο σκοπός της παρούσας διπλωματικής εργασίας είναι ο υπολογισμός των καταναλώσεων καυσίμου των απορριμματοφόρων αλλά και τις εκπομπές αυτών, κατά την συλλογή και μεταφορά των αποβλήτων για έναν από τους μεγαλύτερους δήμους της Αττικής, τον Δήμο Περιστερίου. Αρχικά, συλλέχτηκαν τα δεδομένα από τον Δήμο Περιστερίου σχετικά με τις καταναλώσεις των απορριμματοφόρων, αλλά και τις διαδρομές που ακολουθούν αυτά για την συλλογή και μεταφορά των αποβλήτων. Η συλλογή των δεδομένων έγινε στο πεδίο, ενώ ακολούθησε ξενάγηση στον Σταθμό Μεταφόρτωσης Απορριμμάτων (ΣΜΑ), στον χώρο υγειονομικής ταφής απορριμμάτων (ΧΥΤΑ), στο κέντρο διαλογής ανακυκλώσιμων υλικών αλλά και στο χώρο επεξεργασίας (κομποστοποίησης) των βιοαποβλήτων. Στην συνέχεια, ο Δήμος διαχωρίστηκε σε τέσσερις διαφορετικές ζώνες (αστική, εμπορική, λόφος, βιοτεχνική), με απώτερο σκοπό την σύγκριση αυτών ως προς τις καταναλώσεις καυσίμου των απορριμματοφόρων. Έπειτα, υπολογίστηκε ο συντελεστής αποτελεσματικότητας μιας διαδρομής απορριμματοφόρου (λίτρα (L) καυσίμου ανά μάζα (t) αποβλήτων). Ακολούθησε, η σύγκριση των καταναλώσεων, όχι μόνο ως προς τις ζώνες χρήσεις γης του Δήμου αλλά και ως προς τα τρία βασικά ρεύματα αποβλήτων (σύμμεικτα, ανακυκλώσιμα, βιοαπόβλητα) και τους τέσσερις βασικούς τύπους απορριμματοφόρων (EURO II, EURO IV, EURO V, EURO VI). Ακόμη, μελετήθηκαν οι εκπομπές του κάθε απορριμματοφόρου (διοξείδιο του άνθρακα (CO2), οξείδια του αζώτου (NOX), υδρογονάνθρακες (HC) και σωματιδιακή ύλη (PM)) συγκριτικά με τα τρία ρεύματα αποβλήτων και τους τέσσερις τύπους απορριμματοφόρων. Προέκυψαν σημαντικά αποτελέσματα σχετικά με την επίδραση των ζωνών διαχωρισμού του Δήμου Περιστερίου στην κατανάλωση καυσίμου αλλά και με το περιβαλλοντικό αποτύπωμα της ξεχωριστής συλλογής των βιοαποβλήτων. Τέλος, εξάχθηκαν βασικά συμπεράσματα για την αποτελεσματικότητα αλλά και τον αντίκτυπο που έχει η συλλογή και μεταφορά αποβλήτων για κάθε ζώνη διαχωρισμού, κινητήρα EURO και τύπο αποβλήτων και προτάθηκαν τρόποι μείωσης των καταναλώσεων και των εκπομπών των απορριμματοφόρων., The purpose of this thesis is the estimation of diesel consumption of the garbage trucks and their emissions, during collection and transport of waste for one of the largest municipalities of Attica, the Municipality of Peristeri. Initially, the data were obtained from the Municipality of Peristeri about the diesel consumption of garbage trucks and the collection and transport routes. The data were collected on-site followed by field trip in the waste transfer station, the landfill, the mechanical sorting center of recyclables and the composting facility for biowaste treatment. The Municipality was divided in four different zones (urban, commercial, hill, business) to compare the fuel consumption of the garbage trucks. Consequently, the fuel consumption efficiency was estimated for each route of a garbage truck (liters (L) of fuel per mass (t) of waste). Furthermore, the fuel consumption efficiency was estimated for the three main waste categories (commingled, recyclable, bio-waste) and the four main garbage truck engines (EURO II, EURO IV, EURO V, EURO VI). Last, the air emissions of each garbage truck were studied for the pollutants: carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter (PM) in comparison with the three waste categories and the four garbage truck engines. Important results were emerged regarding the effect of the zones of the Municipality of Peristeri on fuel consumption and on the environmental impact of the separate collection of bio-waste. It is concluded the effectiveness and impact of waste collection and transport for each zone, EURO engine and type of waste, while it is proposed various methods for reducing garbage truck fuel consumption and air emissions.

Σκοπός της μελέτης αυτής είναι να εξεταστούν οι βροχοπτώσεις που επικρατούν στις πόλεις των Χανίων, του Ηρακλείου και της Σητείας και στη συνέχεια να εξαχθούν συμπεράσματα σχετικά με το αν υπάρχουν εμφανή δείγματα σύνδεσης με την κλιματική αλλαγή. Αρχικά, πραγματοποιείται μια εκτενής περιγραφή της περιοχής μελέτης, όπου αναλύονται τα γεωγραφικά, μορφολογικά, κλιματικά και υδρολογικά χαρακτηριστικά (προσδιορισμός υδρολογικού ισοζυγίου), καθώς και οι χρήσης γης και νερού της Κρήτης. Στη συνέχεια γίνεται προσπάθεια προσδιορισμού και προσέγγισης του προβλήματος της κλιματικής αλλαγής, καθώς επίσης αναφέρονται και πιθανές συνέπειες αναφορικά με τις βροχοπτώσεις αλλά και άλλες παραμέτρους για την περίπτωση της Κρήτης. Η ανάλυση των χρονοσειρών βροχόπτωσης, γίνεται για την περίοδο ετών 1958-2018, για τις τρεις πόλεις. Η συλλογή των δεδομένων βροχόπτωσης έγινε από διάφορους φορείς, όπως το Εθνικό Αστεροσκοπείο Αθηνών, την Εθνική Μετεωρολογική Υπηρεσία και την Αποκεντρωμένη διοίκηση Κρήτης, ενώ στη συνέχεια η επεξεργασία τους έγινε μέσω του προγράμματος Minitab. Αρχικά μελετάται (στατιστικά) ξεχωριστά η κάθε πόλη και στη συνέχεια γίνεται σύγκριση τους ανά ζεύγη, δείχνοντας μία ισχυρότερη συσχέτιση ανάμεσα σε Ηράκλειο-Σητεία καθώς και ότι τα Χανιά διαθέτουν τις μεγαλύτερες ποσότητες βροχόπτωσης. Ακολούθως, επιλέχθηκαν τα Χανιά, ως το μέρος με τις περισσότερες βροχοπτώσεις, για να γίνει σύγκριση και συσχέτιση των παραμέτρων της θερμοκρασίας και της ηλιοφάνειας με τη βροχόπτωση, όπου προέκυψε πως υπάρχει μέτρια προς ισχυρή αρνητική συσχέτιση και στους δυο συνδυασμούς. Ακόμη έγινε σύγκριση των ποσοτήτων βροχόπτωσης ανάμεσα σε Χανιά και Τυμπάκι, δείχνοντας πως όταν αυξάνονται τα ποσά βροχόπτωσης στα Χανιά αυξάνονται και στο Τυμπάκι. Τέλος, έγινε προσπάθεια πρόβλεψης ποσοτήτων βροχόπτωσης στα Χανιά, για τα επόμενα τρία έτη με τη μέθοδο της διάσπασης χρονοσειρών. Στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο της εργασίας περιλαμβάνονται σχόλια και συμπεράσματα που προέκυψαν κατά την ανάλυση των δεδομένων. Από τη μελέτη προέκυψε πως παρατηρούνται κάποια φαινόμενα κλιματικής αλλαγής και στις τρεις πόλεις που εξετάζονται., This study aims to examine the rainfall occurring in Chania, Heraklion, and Sitia, and to extract conclusions on whether there is evidence suggesting a connection to climate change. At first the study provides an extensive profile of the study area, analysing the geographical, morphological, and climatic characteristics of Crete, while also referring to land and water use on the island. The area’s hydrological characteristics, such as the drainage basins and water supply systems it consists of, as well as information that comprises its water balance, are also described. Afterward an attempt is made to designate and touch on the issue of climate change, and mentions possible consequences related to rainfall and other parameters in the case of Crete. The analysis of rainfall time series spans the period between 1958 and 2018 for the three cities mentioned above. Rainfall data collection involved several organisations, including the National Observatory of Athens, the Hellenic National Meteorological Service, and the Decentralised Administration of Crete, while data analysis was done using the Minitab software. Each city is statistically analysed, and they are then compared in pairs, showing a stronger correlation between Heraklion and Sitia (with a coefficient of determination of 8.67%), and indicating that Chania experiences the largest amounts of rainfall. Given that it experiences the largest rainfall amounts, Chania was chosen as the case study for the comparison and correlation of the factors of temperature and sunshine in relation to rainfall. Here, it emerged that a moderate to strong negative correlation exists in both combinations. Rainfall amounts were also compared between Chania and Tympaki, a city of southern Crete in Heraklion city, showing that as rainfall amounts increase in Chania, they also increase in Tympaki (strong correlation with a coefficient of determination of 75.84%). An effort has also been made to forecast rainfall amounts in Chania for the next three years, using the time series decomposition method. Finaly at the study contained commentary and conclusions that emerged from the data analysis process. Here, it became apparent that certain climate change phenomena can be observed in all three cities included in this study.

Το φαινόμενο της κλιματικής αλλαγής, το οποίο κλιμακώνεται δραστικά με το πέρασμα του χρόνου, ώθησε την κοινωνία στην αναζήτηση μεθόδων παραγωγής ενέργειας πιο φιλικές προς το περιβάλλον. Στον όρο Πράσινη Ενέργεια (ΠΕ), συγκαταλέγεται η εκμεταλλεύσιμη ενέργεια που προέρχεται από φυσικές διαδικασίες, δηλαδή από Ανανεώσιμες Πηγές Ενέργειας (ΑΠΕ) και δεν τροφοδοτείται από τη χρήση πηγών ορυκτών καυσίμων. Αυτή η μετάβαση στην παραγωγή ενέργειας, είχε ως αποτέλεσμα, μετά το 2000, να υπάρξει μια ραγδαία αύξηση στην εγκατάσταση φωτοβολταϊκών πάνελς πρώτης γενιάς. Δεδομένου ότι η διάρκεια ζωής του φωτοβολταϊκού πάνελ υπολογίζεται κατά μέσο όρο στα 20 με 25 χρόνια, αναμένεται στα επόμενα χρόνια η δημιουργία μεγάλου όγκου φωτοβολταϊκών πλαισίων, ο οποίος χρήζει επεξεργασία. Ακολουθώντας τα πρότυπα της κυκλικής οικονομίας, η ανακύκλωση υλικών από τα φωτοβολταϊκά απόβλητα, τα οποία περιέχουν μεγάλο αριθμό μεταλλικών στοιχείων συμπεριλαμβανομένων και των μεταλλικών στοιχείων που εντάσσονται στην κατηγορία των σπάνιων γαιών, κρίνεται απαραίτητη. Η ανακύκλωση υλικών από φωτοβολταϊκά πάνελς, αποτελεί μια ιδιαίτερα περίπλοκη διαδικασία, δεδομένου του μεγάλου αριθμού των επί μέρους συστατικών. Ιδιαίτερη προσοχή πρέπει να δοθεί στην ποιοτική και όχι ποσοτική ανακύκλωση, αναφορικά με την σπανιότητα ορισμένων μετάλλων, αλλά και στην οικονομική τους σημασία προκειμένου η ανακύκλωση φωτοβολταϊκών πάνελ να θεωρηθεί μια βιώσιμη διαδικασία. Ένα από τα κύρια μέταλλα που εμπεριέχονται σε ένα φωτοβολταϊκό είναι ο άργυρος (Ag), ο οποίος βρίσκει ευρεία χρήση σε διάφορες πτυχές της καθημερινότητας. Στην συγκεκριμένη εργασία βελτιστοποιήθηκαν οι πειραματικές συνθήκες για την εκχύλιση όσο το δυνατόν μεγαλύτερων ποσοτήτων αργύρου με υδροθερμική επεξεργασία. Εφαρμόστηκαν 6 παράγοντες για την εύρεση των βέλτιστων συνθηκών: 1) Συγκέντρωση νιτρικού οξέος (ΗΝΟ3), 2) Θερμοκρασία, 3) Αναλογία υγρού – στερεού, 4) Χρόνος παραμονής, 5) Αλεσμένο / μη αλεσμένο υλικό, και 6) Ανάδευση. Η πειραματική διαδικασία που ακολουθήθηκε έχει ως εξής : 1) Χαρακτηρισμός φωτοβολταϊκού απόβλητου, 2) Προεπεξεργασία φωτοβολταϊκού πάνελ, 3) Θερμική επεξεργασία, 4) Διαχωρισμός των στοιχείων του φωτοβολταϊκά πλαισίου, 5) Κονιορτοποίηση δειγμάτων, 6) Υδροθερμική επεξεργασία, 7) Φυγοκέντριση δειγμάτων και 8) Ανάλυση στοιχείων σε ICP-MS. Οι βέλτιστες συνθήκες με χρήση των 5 πρώτων παραγόντων είναι οι εξής : 1.5 Ν, 120 οC, 120 min, 10/1 αναλογία υγρού – στερεού (L/S) , αλεσμένο δείγμα, με ποσοστό ανάκτησης 81.94%. Με την χρήση και των 6 παραγόντων οι βέλτιστες συνθήκες είναι οι εξής: 2 Ν, 45 οC, 1440 min, 10/1 αναλογία υγρού-στερεού (L/S) , αλεσμένο δείγμα και ανάδευση με ταχύτητα 200 rpm κατέδειξαν ποσοστό ανάκτησης αργύρου 100%., This study explores the need for more environmentally friendly energy production methods due to the ever-increasing effects of climate change. Green energy (GE), which encompasses all energy produced from renewable sources (RES), has led to a surge in photovoltaic (PV) panel installations, especially after the 2000s. However, this transition to green energy will result in significant volumes of PV waste, due to the estimated lifespan of PV at around 20-25 years, requiring appropriate treatment and processing of spent materials. Recycling PV unit is particularly challenging due to the numerous components of the panel, including several metallic elements, including rare earth elements. This thesis focuses on the optimal experimental parameters for extracting silver (Ag) from PV waste using the hydrothermal method. The six parameters analyzed are : 1) Concentration of nitric acid (HNO3), 2) Temperature, 3) Liquid/Solid ratio, 4) Stirring, 5) Residence time and 6) milled/not milled waste. The experimental procedure involves : 1) PV waste classification, 2) Pre-treatment, 3) Individual component separation, 4) Hydrothermal treatment, 5) Pulverization of samples, 6) Centrifugation and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) analysis. Overall, this report emphasizes the importance of designing a qualitative process for PV waste recycling that considers the rarity of some metals and the economic potential to ensure the sustainability of the process. Considering the five parameters mentioned above, was found that 1.5 Ν, 120 °C, 120 minutes, a L/S ratio of 10/1, and a pulverized sample resulting in an extraction efficiency of 81.94%. On the other hand, the utilization of all six parameters, the optimized conditions were 2 Ν, 45 °C, 1440 minutes, a L/S ratio of 10/1, pulverized sample, and stirring at a speed of 200 rpm, resulted in extraction efficiency of Ag at 100%.
