The finite temperature phase transition of strongly interacting matter is studied within a nonlocal chiral quark model of the NJL type coupled to a Polyakov loop. In contrast to previous investigations which were restricted to the mean-field approximation, mesonic correlations are included by evaluating the quark-antiquark ring sum. For physical pion masses, we find that the pions dominate the pressure below the phase transition, whereas above T_c the pressure is well described by the mean-field approximation result. The branching ratios and photon spectra of the rare processes rho(omega)-> pi^0 pi^0 gamma, rho(omega) -> eta pi^0 gamma are calculated in the framework of the standard local quark Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Three types of diagrams are considered: the quark box and the pole diagrams with scalar (sigma,a_0(980)) and vector (rho,omega) mesons. The obtained estimations for the widths of the processes rho(omega)-> pi^0 pi^0 gamma are in satisfactory agreement with existing experimental data. Multistate generalizations of Landau-Zener model are studied by summing entire series of perturbation theory. A new technique for analysis of the series is developed. Analytical expressions for probabilities of survival at the diabatic potential curves with extreme slope are proved. Degenerate situations are considered when there are several potential curves with extreme slope. The decay width of the process eta -> pi^0 gamma gamma is calculated in the framework of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The momentum dependence of quark loops is taken into account. Three types of diagrams are considered: quark box, scalar(a0) and vector(rho, omega) pole diagrams. We consider a nonlocal version of the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model. The nonlocality is contained in the quark-antiquark bilinears of the four-quark vertices as a form factor of the Gaussian type. The model has three parameters which can be fixed in favour of the values of the pion mass, the pion decay constant f_pi, and the current quark mass. The pi pi scattering amplitude is obtained by calculating the quark box and the sigma-pole diagrams, where sigma is the scalar isoscalar meson. It is shown that this amplitude satisfies the well-known Weinberg relation. We obtain the s, p, d wave scattering lengths in all isotopic channels and the s wave slope parameters. The results are in satisfactory agreement with both phenomenological data and the basic requirements of low-energy theorems, thus supporting to the form factor used., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

Two-photon decays of vector mesons and dilepton decays of scalar mesons which are forbidden in vacuum and can occur in dense baryonic matter due to the explicit violation of Lorentz symmetry are described within a quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type. The temperature and chemical potential dependence of these processes is investigated. It is found that their contribution to the production of photons and leptons in heavy-ion collisions is enhanced near the conditions corresponding to the restoration of chiral symmetry. Moreover, in the case of the a_0 meson and especially the \rho-meson, a resonant behaviour (an additional amplification) is observed due to the degeneration of \rho and a_0 masses when a hot hadron matter is approaching a chirally symmetric phase., Comment: 20 figures, IOP style

Two-photon decays of rho and omega mesons and strong decays rho -> eta pi and omega -> pi pi are described in the quark Nambu-Jona-Lasinio(NJL) model in dense medium. Decays of rho-meson are especially interesting because they contain intermediate a_0-meson which became a sharp resonance in the vicinity of phase transition of hadron matter into quark-gluon plasma. This leads to increasing rho decay width and, as a result, two-photon decay of rho-meson in medium became comparable with two-photon decays of scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in vacuum. A short review of the development of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model is given. The SU(2)x SU(2) and U(3)x U(3) local quark NJL models are considered. The mechanisms of spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and vector dominance are shown. The local NJL model allows us to describe the mass spectrum and main strong and electroweak decays of the four ground-state nonets of pseudoscalar, scalar, vector and axial-vector mesons. Applications of this model to the description of mesons in hot and dense medium are discussed. It is shown that for solving problems connected with the description of the meson radial excitations and quark confinement it is necessary to consider a nonlocal extension of the NJL model. The main attention is attracted to the description of the methods used in different versions of the NJL model. The invariant differential cross section for inclusive electron production in $p + p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$~GeV has been measured by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider over the transverse momentum range $0.4 \le p_T \le 5.0$~GeV/$c$ in the central rapidity region ($|\eta| \le 0.35$). The contribution to the inclusive electron spectrum from semileptonic decays of hadrons carrying heavy flavor, {\it i.e.} charm quarks or, at high $p_T$, bottom quarks, is determined via three independent methods. The resulting electron spectrum from heavy flavor decays is compared to recent leading and next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations. We consider an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model including both (q \bar q)- and (qq)-interactions with two light-quark flavors in the presence of a single (quark density) chemical potential. In the color superconducting phase of the quark matter the color SU(3) symmetry is spontaneously broken down to SU(2). If the usual counting of Goldstone bosons would apply, five Nambu-Goldstone (NG) bosons corresponding to the five broken color generators should appear in the mass spectrum. Unlike that expectation, we find only three gapless diquark excitations of quark matter. One of them is an SU(2)-singlet, the remaining two form an SU(2)-(anti)doublet and have a quadratic dispersion law in the small momentum limit. These results are in agreement with the Nielsen-Chadha theorem, according to which NG-bosons in Lorentz-noninvariant systems, having a quadratic dispersion law, must be counted differently. The origin of the abnormal number of NG-bosons is shown to be related to a nonvanishing expectation value of the color charge operator Q_8 reflecting the lack of color neutrality of the ground state. Finally, by requiring color neutrality, two massive diquarks are argued to become massless, resulting in a normal number of five NG-bosons with usual linear dispersion laws., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, revtex4

The polarizability of a charged pion is estimated in the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type. Nonlocality is described by quark form factors of the Gaussian type. It is shown that the polarizability in this model is very sensitive to the form of nonlocality and choice of the model parameters., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Introducing such a notion as a "excitation of physical vacuum" we do an attempt to explain some strange experimental facts such as large value of $\sigma$-term measured in pion-nucleon low energy scattering, $\Delta T=1/2$ rule in kaon two pion decay modes, the ratio of strange to nonstrange yield in low energy proton-antiproton annihilation, excess of soft photons in hadron's collisions. The electromagnetic radius of the charged pion and the transition radius of the neutral pion are calculated in the framework of the nonlocal chiral quark model. It is shown in this model that the contributions of vector mesons to the pion radii are noticeably suppressed in comparison with a similar contribution in the local Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The form-factor for the process gamma*pi+pi- is calculated for the -1 GeV^2

The nonlocal version of the SU(2)xSU(2) symmetric four-quark interaction of the NJL type is considered. Each of the quark lines contains the form factors. These form factors remove the ultraviolet divergences in quark loops. The additional condition on quark mass function m(p) ensures the absence of the poles in the quark propagator(quark confinement). The constituent quark mass m(0) is expressed thought the cut-off parameter Lambda, m(0)=Lambda=340 MeV in the chiral limit. These parameters are fixed by the experimental value of the weak pion decay and allow us to describe the mass of the light scalar meson, strong decay rho -> pi pi and D/S ratio in the decay a_1 -> rho pi in satisfactory agreement with experimental data., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figures

Let V be a p-adic representation of the absolute Galois group G of Q_p that becomes crystalline over a finite tame extension, and assume p odd. We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for V to be isomorphic to the Tate module V_p(A) of an abelian variety A defined over Q_p. Within the framework of the NJL model, we investigate the modification of the pion damping width in a hot pion gas for temperatures ranging from 0 to 180 MeV. The pion is found to broaden noticeably at T > 60 MeV. Near the chiral phase transition T ~ 180 MeV, the pion width is saturated and amounts to 70 MeV. The phase diagram for quark matter is investigated within a simple Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model without vector correlations. It is found that the phase structure in the temperature-density plane depends sensitively on the parametrization of the model. We present two schemes of parametrization of the model where within the first one a first order phase transition from a phase with broken chiral symmetry to a color superconducting phase for temperatures below the triple point at T_t= 55 MeV occurs whereas for the second one a second order phase transition for temperatures below T_t = 7 MeV is found. In the latter case, there is also a coexistence phase of broken chiral symmetry with color superconductivity, which is a new finding within this class of models. The process gamma* gamma -> sigma is investigated in the framework of the SU(2)xSU(2) chiral NJL model. The form factor of the process is derived for arbitrary virtuality of gamma* in the Euclidean kinematic domain. The asymptotic behaviour of this form factor resembles the asymptotic behaviour of the gamma* gamma -> pi form factor., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures; added references

An important role of the scalar isoscalar sigma-meson in the low-energy physics is discussed. The behavior of the sigma-meson in the hot and dense medium is studied. It is shown that in the vicinity of critical values of temperature(T) and chemical potential(m) the sigma-meson can become a sharp resonance. This effect can lead to a strong enhancement of the processes pi pi -> gamma gamma and pi pi-> pi pi near the two-pion threshold. Experimental observation of this phenomenon can be interpreted as a signal of approaching the domain where the chiral symmetry restoration and phase transition of the hadron matter into quark-gluon plasma take place., Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures; figures 6,7 replaced

It is shown that a chiral quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type can be used to describe "soft"-momenta parts of the amplitudes with large momentum transfer. As a sample, the processes \gamma^* --> \gamma (\pi,\eta,\eta') where one of the photons, \gamma^*, has large space-like virtuality is investigated. The \gamma^* --> \gamma (\pi,\eta,\eta')$ transition form factors are calculated for a wide region of transferred momenta. The results are consistent with the calculations performed in the instanton-induced chiral quark model and agree with experimental data. A simple chiral quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type with a quark confinement mechanism is constructed for the description of the light meson sector of QCD at finite temperature. Unphysical quark production thresholds in the NJL model are excluded by an infrared cut-off in the momentum integration within quark loop diagrams. This chiral quark model satisfies the low energy theorems. Using the vacuum masses and decay widths of \pi- and \rho-mesons for fixing the model parameters, the properties of the \sigma- meson are derived. Within the Matsubara formalism, the model is systematically extended to finite temperatures where chiral symmetry restoration due to a dropping constituent quark mass entails a vanishing of the infrared cut-off (deconfinement) at the pion Mott temperature T_c=186 MeV. Besides of the pion mass and weak decay constant, the masses, coupling constants and decay widths of \sigma- and \rho-mesons in hot matter are investigated. The quark-antiquark decay channel of the light mesons is opened for T>T_c only and becomes particularly strong for the \rho- meson. The two-pion decay channel below T_c has almost constant width for the \rho- meson up to T_c, but for the \sigma-meson it closes below T_c such that a scalar meson state with vanishing width is obtained as a precursor of the chiral/deconfinement transition., Comment: Latex file, 23 pages, 7 figures

Ground and first radially excited scalar isoscalar meson states and a scalar glueball are described in a nonlocal U(3)xU(3) quark model. The glueball is introduced into the effective meson Lagrangian by means of the dilaton model on the base of the scale invariance of the meson Lagrangian. The scale invariance breaking by current quark masses and gluon anomalies is taken into account. The glueball anomalies turn out to be important for the description of the glueball-quarkonia mixing. The masses of five scalar isoscalar meson states and their strong decay widths are calculated. An effective meson Lagrangian including a scalar glueball is constructed on the base of $U(3)\times U(3)$ chiral symmetry. The glueball is introduced into the meson Lagrangian by using the principle of scale invariance of an effective Lagrangian and the dilaton model. The singlet-octet mixing of scalar meson states is described by means of 't Hooft interaction. The contribution of the scalar and pseudoscalar anomalies into the breaking of scale invariance is taken into account. The mixing of quarkonia with the glueball is described. The mass spectrum of scalar mesons together with the glueball and also their strong decay widths are calculated. From comparing the obtained results with experimental data, it follows that $f_0(1500)$ is rather a glueball, whereas $f_0(1710)$ is a quarkonium. This accords with the results obtained in our previous works where radially-excited scalar meson states were described. A chiral Lagrangian containing, besides the usual meson fields, their first radial excitations is constructed. The Lagrangian is derived by bosonization of a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type quark model with separable nonlocal interactions. The nonlocality is described by form factors corresponding to 3-dimensional excited state wave functions. The spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is governed by the standard NJL gap equations. A simple SU(2)xSU(2) version of the model is used to demonstrate all low-energy theorems to hold valid in the chiral limit. A more realistic U(3)xU(3) model with 't Hooft interaction is constructed to describe the mass spectrum of excited scalar, pseudoscalar, and vector mesons. On the basis of global chiral symmetry, we use the same form factors for the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons. Having fixed the form factor parameters by masses of pseudoscalar mesons, we predict the mass spectrum of scalar mesons. This allows us to interpret experimentally observed scalar, pseudoscalar, and vector meson states as members of quark-antiquark nonets. It is shown that the a_0(1450), K^*_0(1430), f_0(1370), f_J(1710) scalar meson states are the first radial excitations of the ground states: a_0(980), K^*_0(960), f_0(400-1200), f_0(980). First radial excitations of the scalar meson nonet and pseudoscalar mesons \eta, \eta' are described in a nonlocal chiral quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type with 't Hooft interaction. In this model simple form factors are used, which allows us to describe first radial excitations of the mesons and to conserve the gap equations describing spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in the standard form. The external parameters of form factors are fixed by masses of excited pseudoscalar mesons and the same form factors are used for predicting the masses of excited scalar mesons. First radial excitations of the isoscalar and isovector scalar mesons f_0(400-1200), f_0(980) and a_0(980) are investigated in the framework of a nonlocal version of a chiral quark model of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio type. It is shown that f_0(1370), f_J(1710) and a_0(1450) are the first radially excited states of f_0(400-1200), f_0(980) and a_0(980) which are ground states of the scalar meson nonet. The mesons' masses and strong decay widths are calculated. The scalar resonance f_0(1500) is supposed to be a glueball. We consider an extended Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model for the light meson sector of QCD where unphysical quark production thresholds are excluded by an infrared cut-off on the momentum integration within quark loop diagrams. This chiral quark model conserves the low energy theorems. The infrared cut-off is fixed selfconsistently by the dynamically generated quark mass (quark condensate). A chiral U(3)xU(3) Lagrangian, containing besides the usual meson fields their first radial excitations, is considered. The Lagrangian is derived by bosonization of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio quark model with separable non-local interactions. The spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is governed by the NJL gap equation. The first radial excitations of the kaon, K^* and \phi are described with the help of two form factors. It is shown that Julia-Zee dyons do not admit slowly rotating excitations. This is achieved by investigating the complete set of stationary excitations which can give rise to non-vanishing angular momentum. The relevant zero modes are parametrized in a gauge invariant way and analyzed by means of a harmonic decomposition. Since general arguments show that the solutions to the linearized Bogomol'nyi equations cannot contribute to the angular momentum, the relevant modes are governed by a set of electric and a set of non self-dual magnetic perturbation equations. We calculate the mass spectra of the pseudoscalar and scalar meson nonets in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with the 't Hooft interaction. We obtain satisfactory result for the pseudoscalar mesons. For the scalar mesons, the 't Hooft interaction somewhat increases the values of the masses. However, it is not sufficient to explain the whole scalar mass spectrum. The situation could be improved for the $\sigma$ and $f_0$ mesons through mixing with the glueball state. For the description of the masses of $a_0$ and $\kstar$ mesons, it is necessary to involve the other models. The strong decay widths of the scalar mesons are described., Comment: LaTeX text, 8 pages

We study the interior structure of the Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton black holes as a function of the dilaton coupling constant $\gamma\in [0,1]$. For $\gamma\neq 0$ the solutions have no internal Cauchy horizons and the field amplitudes follow a power law behavior near the singularity. It is shown that the non-Abelian black hole solutions have stationary generalizations which are parameterized by their angular momentum and electric Yang-Mills charge. In particular, there exists a non-static class of stationary black holes with vanishing angular momentum. It is also argued that the particle-like Bartnik-McKinnon solutions admit slowly rotating, globally regular excitations. In agreement with the non-Abelian version of the staticity theorem, these non-static soliton excitations carry electric charge, although their non-rotating limit is neutral., Comment: 5 pages, REVTeX

The relation between the large mass of the $\eta'$ and the structure of the gluon vacuum via the $U_A(1)$ anomaly is discussed. A squeezed gluon vacuum is considered as an alternative to existing models. Considering Witten's formula for the $\eta_0$ mass we show that the contact term can give a sizable contribution and relate it to the physical gluon condensate. The photon pair production by pion annihilation in a hot and dense medium at the chiral phase transition is investigated within a chiral quark model. As a direct consequence of this transition the $\sigma$ meson appears as a bound state in the domain of temperatures and chemical potentials where the condition $M_\sigma(T,\mu) \approx 2 M_\pi(T,\mu)$ is fulfilled. This effect results in a strong enhancement of the cross section for the pion annihilation process $2 \pi \to 2 \gamma$ compared with the vacuum case. The calculation of the photon pair production rate as function of the invariant mass shows a strong enhancement and narrowing of the $\sigma$ meson resonance at threshold due to chiral symmetry restoration., Comment: 15 pages, LaTeX, 6 figures, Phys.
