Vitamin B12 is a complex compound synthesized by microorganisms. The industrial production of vitamin B12 relies on specific microbial fermentation processes. E. coli has been utilized as a host for the de novo biosynthesis of vitamin B12, incorporating approximately 30 heterologous genes. However, a metabolic imbalance in the intricate pathway significantly limits vitamin B12 production. In this study, we employed multivariate modular metabolic engineering to enhance vitamin B12 production in E. coli by manipulating two modules comprising a total of 10 genes within the vitamin B12 biosynthetic pathway. These two modules were integrated into the chromosome of a chassis cell, regulated by T7, J23119, and J23106 promoters to achieve combinatorial pathway optimization. The highest vitamin B12 titer was attained by engineering the two modules controlled by J23119 and T7 promoters. The inclusion of yeast powder to the fermentation medium increased the vitamin B12 titer to 1.52 mg/L. This enhancement was attributed to the effect of yeast powder on elevating the oxygen transfer rate and augmenting the strain’s isopropyl-β-D-1-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) tolerance. Ultimately, vitamin B12 titer of 2.89 mg/L was achieved through scaled-up fermentation in a 5-liter fermenter. Objectives: There is a large treatment gap for mental health conditions in sub‐Saharan Africa where most patients who receive any care do so from lay primary health care workers (PHCW). We sought to examine the experiences of PHCW who provide care for older people with depression in Nigerian primary health care (PHC) settings. Methods: Qualitative study design. A total of 24 PHCW participated. Using in‐depth key informant interviews (KIIs), we explored the views of 15 PHCW selected from 10 rural and urban PHCs in South‐Western Nigeria. An additional focus group discussion comprising nine participants was also conducted to discuss emerging themes from KIIs. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Three overall themes were identified: views about depression, treatment options, and community outreach implications. Participants perceived depression in older people as being characterised by a range of mood, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms which made clinical assessments particularly challenging. Common treatment options used by PHCW included general advice and counselling, as well as frequent need to prescribe mild analgesics, vitamins and occasional sedatives in line with patients' expectations. Antidepressants were rarely used even though PHCW are authorised. While home visits are part of their expected work schedule, PHCW rarely implemented these due to non‐availability of transport facilities. Mobile technology was identified as a possible way of overcoming this constraint to providing community based mental healthcare for older people. Conclusion: PHCWs perceived that patients' poor cognitive performance, expectations to prescribe sedatives, analgesics and vitamins, as well as non‐existence of community‐based services were existing barriers to providing evidenced based continued care for older people with depression in the study settings. This study aims to explore the effects of different types of trace element raw materials and their addition levels on the storage quality of 5‰ premixed feed for piglets. There are a total of 5 groups in the experiment, namely group 1: inorganic trace element group; groups 2: trace element coating group; groups 3: glycine trace element group (trace element addition level is 70% of unorganized); groups 4 and groups 5: complex amino acid chelated trace element group (trace element addition level is 70% and 50% of unorganized), with 3 replicates for each group. The premix is stored in a normal warehouse for 90 days, and the loss rates of several vitamins and enzyme activity are measured and calculated on the 1st, 21st, 42nd, 63rd and 90th days. The results showed that from day 1 to 63, the activity of yeast xylanase and β-glucanase has increased to varying degrees. At 90 days, the activity of yeast xylanase in each group began to decrease, with group 5 having the highest loss rate. Compared with groups 1, 2, and 3, the loss rate of warm amylase activity and acidic protease activity in groups 4 and 5 were significantly reduced (P<0.05). The loss rate of vitamins in different groups increases with the prolongation of storage time. At 90 days, compared with other groups, the loss rate of vitamin B2 in groups 4 and 5 were significantly reduced (P<0.05). At day 42, the loss rate of vitamin B6 in group 5 was significantly lower than that in other groups (P<0.01). Throughout the entire experiment, the phytase activity and vitamin E loss rate in group 1 were significantly higher than those in other groups (P<0.05), with group 5 having the lowest phytase activity and vitamin E loss rate. In summary, replacing inorganic trace elements with organic trace elements has less impact on enzyme preparations and vitamins in the premix, and low concentrations of organic trace elements are more conducive to the preservation of the premix. Citrus fruits are widely consumed for their nutritional and health benefits. They belong to the Rutaceae and have many varieties, such as sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), which is the most popular. Citrus fruits are rich in water (>80%), dietary fiber, and vitamins. They also contain bioactive components, which may modulate energy metabolism and lipid oxidation through various mechanisms. These mechanisms include stimulating β3-adrenergic receptors, increasing mitochondrial biogenesis and thermogenesis, activating AMP kinase and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1α pathways, inhibiting lipogenesis and lipid accumulation, and inducing browning of white adipose tissue. This review summarizes the mechanisms and outcomes of citrus fruits and their metabolites on energy metabolism and body weight in different experimental models. The literature was searched for in vitro and in vivo animal and human studies that investigated the effects of citrus consumption on energy expenditure, thermogenesis, adipogenesis, and lipid accumulation. Citrus fruits and their metabolites have shown promising effects on energy metabolism and lipid oxidation in in vitro and in vivo animal studies. However, the evidence from human studies is limited and inconsistent. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are briefly discussed, and knowledge gaps and research needs are identified for future studies. Citrus fruits may have beneficial effects on energy metabolism and body weight, but more rigorous and well-designed human trials are needed to confirm their efficacy and safety. Millets are a group of small, drought-resistant grains that have been grown for more than thousands of years. They are highly nutritious, rich in essential vitamins and minerals, and have gained attention in recent years due to their potential to address global food security and environmental challenges. This review article provides an overview of millets, their nutritional benefits, environmental advantages, and their role in promoting sustainable agriculture and processing of millets. Supplementation with antioxidant vitamins is common among amateur and elite athletes. It is thought to cause a reduction in the muscle damage that results from exercised-induced oxidative stress, increasing the ability to improve performance markers. A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out to evaluate the effects of supplementation with antioxidant vitamins (A, C, and E), alone and/or combination of sports performance (maximum oxygen consumption, maximum strength) in athletic populations. Eligibility criteria included only randomized clinical trial studies written in English, Spanish and Portuguese with no restriction on the year of publication. Case studies, observational studies, quasi-experimental trials, literature reviews, and animal studies were excluded from this systematic review. Eligible studies were searched on PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, SciElo, and Google Scholar. To minimize the risk of publication bias, searches were also conducted in the grey literature. Database searches occurred from June to September of 2022. Thirteen randomized controlled trials with a total of 398 participants. The risk of bias was assessed and presented low overall quality. In general, markers of sports performance and overall performance were not affected by antioxidant vitamin supplementation (SMD = 0.00, 95%CI − 0.43, 0.20, P = 0.98). Similarly, evaluations of aerobic resistance (SMD = − 0.06, 95%CI − 0.31, 0.19, P = 0.66) as well as muscle strength (SMD = 0.04, 95% CI − 0.31, 0.39, P = 0.81) were not influenced by supplementation. Thus, the results of this meta-analysis of clinical trials demonstrate that supplementation with isolated and/or combined antioxidant vitamins is not associated with improved sports performance. SUMMARY: Enhancing maize kernel oil is vital for improving the bioavailability of fat‐soluble vitamins. Here, we combined favourable alleles of dgat1‐2 and fatb into parental lines of four multi‐nutrient‐rich maize hybrids (APTQH1, APTQH4, APTQH5 and APTQH7) using marker‐assisted selection (MAS). Parental lines possessed favourable alleles of crtRB1, lcyE, vte4 and opaque2 genes. Gene‐specific markers enabled successful foreground selection in BC1F1, BC2F1 and BC2F2, while background selection using genome‐wide microsatellite markers (127–132) achieved 93% recurrent parent genome recovery. Resulting inbreds exhibited significantly higher oil (6.93%) and oleic acid (OA, 40.49%) and lower palmitic acid (PA, 14.23%) compared to original inbreds with elevated provitamin A (11.77 ppm), vitamin E (16.01 ppm), lysine (0.331%) and tryptophan (0.085%). Oil content significantly increased from 4.80% in original hybrids to 6.73% in reconstituted hybrids, making them high‐oil maize hybrids. These hybrids displayed 35.70% increment in oil content and 51.56% increase in OA with 36.32% reduction in PA compared to original hybrids, while maintaining higher provitamin A (two‐fold), vitamin E (nine‐fold), lysine (two‐fold) and tryptophan (two‐fold) compared to normal hybrids. Lipid health indices showed improved atherogenicity, thrombogenicity, cholesterolaemic, oxidability, peroxidizability and nutritive values in MAS‐derived genotypes over original versions. Besides, the MAS‐derived inbreds and hybrids exhibited comparable grain yield and phenotypic characteristics to the original versions. The maize hybrids developed in the study possessed high‐yielding ability with high kernel oil and OA, low PA, better fatty acid health and nutritional properties, higher multi‐vitamins and balanced amino acids, which hold immense significance to address malnutrition and rising demand for oil sustainably in a fast‐track manner. Protein deficiency is a major difficulty for human needs in the past few decades, while different types of aquatic species are rich in high quality protein. Therefore, aquaculture is considered as the main developing food production sector globally. Bacterial infections are the main problem for aquaculture, and their outbreaks have a great impact on productivity, and previously indiscriminate use of antibiotics to control them. However, the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens might lead to sudden infectious disease outbreaks resulting in serious economic loss. Immunostimulants application is an effective technique to protect and enhance the immune system of aquatic animals and therefore improve aquaculture production. Nutrient immunostimulants such as essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals are the most important responsibility to improve aquaculture production, as well as the cost of this method, which is effective, non-toxic, and environment friendly. These nutrient immunostimulants are supportive to increase the immune system, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, and infection resistance of aquatic animals. In addition, nutritional feed additives improved feed palatability and the excellence of aquatic products and also enhance gut functions. Some information is available on nutrient immunostimulants in aquaculture applications, and this review provides information on different kinds of nutritional administration used in aquaculture to enhance positive impacts on aquatic animals' health as well as feed quality development. Vitamins are a broad group of molecules with unique chemical, biological, and structural characteristics that are necessary for a normal metabolic process. This research evaluated the fat and water-soluble vitamin composition of mature (yellow) Carica papaya leaf using standard analytical techniques. The results obtained from the analyses revealed that mature (yellow) Carica papaya leaf contained the following fat-soluble vitamins: vitamins A (5.08 mg/100g), Vitamin D (3.14 mg/100g), Vitamin E (15.47 mg/100g), and Vitamin K (8.03 mg/100g), while the water-soluble vitamins include Vitamin B1 (0.019 mg/100g), Vitamin B2 (0.018 mg/100g), Vitamin B3 (0.610 mg/100g), Vitamin B6 (0.0231 mg/100g), Vitamin 12 (4.415 mg/100g), and Vitamin C (60.41 mg/100g). The study has shown that the mature (yellow) leaf of Carica papaya is a rich source of both fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins, which may be used in the formulation of multivitamin food supplements. Purpose: The relationship between vitamin intake and cancer risk in the chronic kidney disease (CKD) population is unknown. For this reason, we investigated the relationship between dietary vitamin intake and cancer risk in CKD patients and looked for effective vitamin dietary patterns. Methods: This study included 3518 CKD patients from 2007 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. All participants were categorized into four groups based on vitamin intake by K-mean clustering. The data were collected and analyzed from June 2023 to December 2023. Results: A total of 3518 CKD patients with a mean age of (61.8 ± 16.3) years were included in the study. During a median follow-up of 7.3 years, 137 participants died of cancer. In the multivariate adjusted cox proportional hazards model for single vitamin intake, vitamin E Q4 intake (reference Q1) reduced cancer mortality (HR (95% CI) = 0.45 (0.24–0.87), P = 0.018). Further plotting of the restricted cubic spline curve revealed a linearly decreasing relationship between vitamin E intake and cancer mortality (Poverall = 0.010 Pnon-linear = 0.163). In the multivariate adjusted cox proportional hazards model for multivitamin co-intake, the vitamin C/K intake group reduced cancer mortality compared to the low vitamin intake group (HR (95% CI) = 0.42 (0.20–0.88), P = 0.022). Conclusion: Increased vitamin C intake was independently associated with reduced cancer risk in CKD patients, and a vitamin dietary pattern with high vitamin C/K intake was also effective in reducing cancer risk. Background: This research aimed to explore the association between changes in the intake of common individual vitamins and combinations of vitamins and the prevalence of kidney calculi. Methods: We used data from NHANES to investigate the association between nine common vitamins and kidney stone prevalence. Participants were clustered into several vitamin exposure patterns using an unsupervised K-means clustering method. We used logistic regression models and restrictive cubic spline curves to explore the influence of vitamins. Results: The regression model exposed that compared to lower intake, high intake of vitamin B6 [Q4: OR (95% CI) = 0.76 (0.62, 0.93)], vitamin C [Q4: OR (95% CI) = 0.73 (0.59, 0.90)] and vitamin D [Q4: OR (95% CI) = 0.77 (0.64, 0.94)] individually exerted protective effects against the prevalence of kidney stones. Furthermore, the restrictive cubic spline analysis showed that the protective effect against the prevalence of kidney stones is enhanced as the take of vitamin B6 and vitamin D increased. Moreover, with the increase in vitamin C intake, its protective effect may turn into a risk factor. Regarding mixed exposure, Cluster 4 exhibited a significant protective effect against kidney stones compared with Cluster 1 [Model 3: OR (95% CI) = 0.79 (0.64, 0.98)]. Conclusions: Our research revealed that high levels of vitamin B6 and vitamin D intake were linked to a lower prevalence of kidney stone. With the gradual increase intake of vitamin C, the prevalence of kidney calculi decreased first and then increased. Abstract: The functional state of enrichment cultures of the Chlorophycean strain Chlorococcum oleofaciens CAMU MZ–Ch4 under various cultivation conditions was studied. Experiments with different aeration conditions, cultivation durations, and nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the medium were carried out to evaluate the growth dynamics of the strain and its biochemical characteristics. The contents of chlorophylls, carotenoids, proteins, lipids, retinol, α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, lipid peroxidation products, antioxidant enzymes (glutathione peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase), and succinate dehydrogenase activity were measured. The lipid content on the fully supplemented Bold's basal medium increased to 381.03 mg g−1 dry weight at the late stationary growth phase. This value is 1.3–2.8 times higher than in other experiments. The use of aeration was associated with an increased content of proteins at 283.56 mg g−1 and of carotenoids at 2.12 mg g−1. Also, cultures at the early stationary growth phase with aeration showed the ability to accumulate phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid in amounts up to 0.32 mg g−1 and 0.19 mg g−1. The 74-day-old cultures had the highest contents of retinol (0.16 mg g−1) and α-tocopherol (0.68 mg g−1). Growth in nitrogen- and phosphorus-depleted media increased catalase and superoxide dismutase activity. A comprehensive analysis of all data showed that the antioxidant defence system is stress-resistant and flexible under varying aeration conditions and nitrogen and phosphorus availabilities. Background: Although observational studies have reported a correlation between vitamin D deficiency and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), epidemiological evidence on the risk of obese subjects suffering T2DM due to a vitamin D deficiency is limited. Therefore, we investigated the correlation between T2DM and serum vitamin D, lipids, blood pressure, insulin indexes in an obese population. Methods: A total of 1440 participants including 450 healthy controls and 990 obese subjects, 470 without T2DM and 520 with T2DM. Serum vitamin D levels were measured, and the association between low levels and T2DM in obese subjects was examined using multinomial and linear regression analyses. Results: Of the participants, 35% had deficient or insufficient vitamin D levels (ie, < 20 ng/mL). Compared with healthy controls, obese subjects, particularly those with T2DM had lower vitamin D levels. Multinomial logistic regression analysis showed that obese subjects with T2DM had a gradually increasing risk for desirable (RO = 1.41, 95% CI 1.06– 1.93, P = 0.027), insufficient (RO = 1.83, 95% CI 1.27– 2.84, P < 0.001), or deficient ((RO = 2.14, 95% CI 1.15– 3.75, P = 0.014) vitamin D levels. In obese subjects with T2DM, vitamin D levels correlated inversely with the risk indicators for diabetes, such as the levels of HbA1c (β = − 0.16, P = 0.002), fasting insulin (Fins; β = − 0.31, P = 0.008), and HOMA-IR (β = − 0.19, P < 0.001). In obese subjects without T2DM, vitamin D was associated negatively with the risk of having T2DM at five-year follow-up (relative risk = 0.93, 95% CI 0.79– 0.97, P = 0.037). Conclusion: This study demonstrates that low vitamin D levels correlate with the presence of T2DM in the obese population. This finding indicates that hypovitaminosis D may be a potential biological vulnerability factor for the development of T2DM in obese subjects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SUMMARY: Functional foods are foods that offer health benefits over and above their nutritional value. As eggs are a food of global importance, many authors believe that they are an ideal candidate for functional foods of the future, as it is possible to influence their chemical composition through production technology. Vitamins are one of the most important groups of micronutrients essential for human health, and eggs are recognised as an important source of vitamins in the diet, especially fat-soluble vitamins. The egg yolk contains large amounts of vitamins A, D, E and K. Eating two eggs a day covers 10% to 30% of a person's vitamin requirements. This paper reviews the results of a large number of researchers on the influence of various aspects of production technology on the content of fat-soluble vitamins in eggs. Most attention has been paid to the influence of vitamin supplements in feed for laying hens, but also to the influence of the rearing system and the genotype as well as the interaction between the vitamins. Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been historically managed with lifestyle modifications, monitoring for conversion to wet AMD, and vitamins. Recently there has been a flurry of research focused on discovering new targets to prevent worsening of dry AMD. In 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration approved the first two intravitreal complement inhibitors to slow the rate of geographic atrophy progression. However, serial intravitreal injections for a chronic progressive disease are burdensome for patients and have procedural risks. Therefore, there is significant research to discover novel oral medications to manage dry AMD. Several oral medications are currently in phase 2 and 3 clinical trials for dry AMD, whereas others have had recent readouts on their clinical trials and efficacy. The purpose of this review is to describe the therapeutic pathways currently being investigated and to provide an update on the clinical status of novel oral medications for the management of dry AMD. Vitamin A supplements are used by many people, and the number of newly registered dietary supplements is continuously increasing. The preparations fall under food law and are not subject to the strict controls of pharmaceuticals. Risk indications and maximum quantity recommendations, e.g., from the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are not binding, which means that overdoses and potentially serious health problems can easily occur. The hepatotoxicity and teratogenicity of vitamin A are well documented, and other negative effects of high doses of vitamin A are also being discussed. Nevertheless, preparations with exorbitantly high doses are freely available for sale and unrestricted. In this study, 75 supplements containing vitamin A available in Germany and 26 available in the USA were critically examined on the basis of various parameters such as the recommended daily dose according to the manufacturer, daily therapy costs (DTC), the presence of warnings about overdose, use during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and information on adverse effects/interactions. The aim was to gain insights into their risk potential and to examine the need for closer monitoring and stricter guidelines for these preparations. The results show some considerable country-specific differences. Overall, there are serious deficiencies in compliance with the labeling requirements for both the German and the US preparations, and the dosages are often far too high in view of the applicable expert recommendations. Overall, these deficits can pose a risk for consumers that is difficult to assess in its entirety, especially for vulnerable consumer groups. It should be noted that the US preparations perform better overall than the German preparations. This suggests better regulation of dietary supplements in the US market. Based on the available data and literature research, it is doubtful whether the intake of vitamin A-containing preparations, without a diagnosed vitamin A deficiency, has a positive health benefit. The American College of Lifestyle Medicine recommends eating a predominantly plant-based diet with a variety of minimally processed vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds. At any level, adoption of a plant-based diet can improve one's health through a variety of mechanisms. Increasing intake of plant-based foods often results in increases in fiber intake, decreases in saturated fat intake, and increased intake of essential vitamins and minerals, among other healthful benefits. Despite such potential benefits, many individuals are reluctant or resistant to change their usual dietary behaviors or unable to sustain diet changes over time. This is largely because an individual's decision to adopt a plant-based diet is influenced by a diverse array of motivating factors, priorities, and/or misconceptions about nutrient adequacy of plant-based diets. Here, we discuss key points from a session at the American College of Lifestyle Medicine's annual conference LM2023. Specifically, we review common preconceptions about plant-based diets, provide guidance on removing the barriers to adopting and adhering to plant-based diets, and highlight key literature findings supporting the health benefits of plant-based diets. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of children and adolescents with celiac disease (CD) in Kuwait and investigate the nutritional deficiencies and sociodemographic factors associated with growth stunting in this population. Methods: This case–control study included 77 CD patients aged 3–18 years diagnosed with CD using IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase and duodenal biopsy and 33 healthy controls. Nutritional status was evaluated based on demographic and clinical characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical parameters. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine the association between CD and growth stunting. Results: Approximately one-third (31%) of children with CD had stunted growth, 20.8% had a low body mass index for their age, and 5.2% had both growth stunting and wasting. Children with CD had higher odds of iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin D deficiency, anemia, and lower socioeconomic status. They were also younger and had decreased serum levels of vitamin D compared to the controls. These factors were all significantly associated with an increased risk of CD, collectively explaining over 50% of the risk. For growth stunting, lower education status among mothers, family income, and serum ferritin were identified as risk factors. Conclusions: A significant proportion of children and adolescents with CD had malnutrition, overt deficiencies, and impaired growth despite coherence with a gluten-free diet. Recommendation: Routine monitoring and targeted nutritional interventions are recommended for children and adolescents with CD to address malnutrition and growth stunting. The free-floating, filamentous cyanobacteria Spirulina platensis is highly valued and in great demand worldwide for its high-value colors and phytonutrients. These compounds find use in health foods, feed, medicines, and diagnostics. The primary objective of this work was to enhance the growth of Spirulina under both oxidative and physiological stress conditions in order to maximize the synthesis of phycocyanin and carotenoid pigments. Cultures were subjected to different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and sodium chloride for varying temperatures and pH levels. Under lower concentrations of H2O2 (4mM), the maximum carotenoid content was increased, but the phycocyanin content was found to be stimulated at 10mM. Moreover, the synthesis of both pigments was shown to be highest under physiological stress circumstances (40mM and 60mM NaCl concentration) and at an optimal pH of 8-9, helped by a temperature range of 25-30°C. The experimental results demonstrate that both carotenoid and phycocyanin exhibit antioxidant properties even in the presence of oxidative stress. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) represents one of the most prevalent foregut illnesses, affecting a large portion of individuals worldwide. Recent research has shown that inflammatory mediators such as cytokines, chemokines, and enzymes are crucial for causing esophageal mucosa alterations in GERD patients. It seems likely that the expression of various cytokines in the esophageal mucosa also induces oxidative stress by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). As humoral agents and peptidergic neurotransmitters that may support the enterogastric axis, bombesin and its related bombesin-like peptide, GRP (gastrin releasing peptide), have not been fully investigated. Therefore, considering all these assumptions, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of bombesin in reestablishing biochemical markers linked with inflammation and oxidative/nitrosative stress in GERD pathological settings. C57BL/6 mice were alternatively overfed and fasted for 56 days to induce GERD and then treated with bombesin (0.1, 0.5, and 1 mg/kg intraperitoneally) once daily for 7 days, and omeprazole was used as the positive control. After 7 days of treatment, gastric pain and inflammatory markers were evaluated. Abdominal pain was significantly reduced following bombesin administration, which was also successful in diminishing inflammatory and oxidative/nitrosative stress markers in a manner overlapping with omeprazole. Moreover, bombesin was also able to appreciably modulate gastric pH as a result of the restoration of gastric homeostasis. Overall, these observations indicated that the upregulation of bombesin and interconnected peptides is a promising alternative approach to treat GERD patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early life adversity is a potent risk factor for poor mental health outcomes across the lifespan, including offspring vulnerability to psychopathology. Developmentally, the prenatal period is a sensitive window in which maternal early life experiences may influence offspring outcomes and demarcates a time when expectant mothers and offspring are more susceptible to stressful and salutary influences. This prenatal plasticity constituted the focus of the current study where we tested the association of maternal early life adversity with infant stress regulation through maternal prenatal internalizing symptoms and moderation by prenatal social support. Mother-infant dyads (n = 162) were followed prospectively and mothers completed assessments of social support and depressive and anxiety symptoms across pregnancy. Infants completed standardized stress paradigms at one month and six months. There were several key findings. First, maternal prenatal depressive symptoms significantly mediated predictions of infant cortisol reactivity to the heel stick at one month from maternal early life adversity: specifically, maternal early life adversity positively predicted depressive symptoms in pregnancy, which in turn predicted dampened infant cortisol reactivity. Second, prenatal social support did not significantly moderate predictions of depressive or anxiety symptoms in pregnancy from maternal early life adversity nor did it alter the associations of maternal depressive or anxiety symptoms with infant stress regulation. These results suggest that maternal prenatal mental health is a key mechanism by which maternal early life adverse experiences affect offspring risk for psychopathology. We discuss potential clinical and health implications of dysregulated infant cortisol reactivity with respect to lifespan development.

Abstract Background Tuberculosis (TB) is a leading cause of infection related mortality. Isoniazid is one of the frontline drugs for anti-TB therapy. Hepatotoxicity induced by isoniazid is a major cause of drug-discontinuation which may lead to development of resistant TB or increased mortality. Purpose To characterize pharmacological properties of plant-based prescription medicine, Livogrit Vital (LVV) against isoniazid-induced liver injury (IILI) using HepG2 cells. Method Phytometabolite characterization of LVV was performed by High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The effects of LVV on cytosafety, IC50 shift, oxidative stress, ER stress, apoptosis, liver injury markers, and accumulation of isoniazid and hydrazine was performed on HepG2 cells induced with isoniazid. Silymarin was used as the positive control. Results HPLC based phytometabolite characterization of LVV revealed the presence of several anti-oxidant, anti-apoptotic, and hepatoprotective compounds. In isoniazid-induced HepG2 cells, LVV reduced cytotoxicity of isoniazid and shifted its IC50 value. Treatment with LVV reduced ROS generation and lipid peroxidation; enhanced GSH enzyme levels in isoniazid-induced HepG2 cells. As per the mechanistic evaluation, LVV modulated gene expression level of Caspase-3, FGF21, and IRE-1α. LVV treatment also normalized isoniazid-induced elevated Caspase-3 activity and cPARP1 protein levels, indicating its potentials to regulate liver cell apoptosis. Concomitantly, biomarkers of hepatotoxicity, ALT and GGT, also decreased by LVV treatment. Interestingly, LVV treatment reduced intracellular accumulation of isoniazid and its toxic metabolite hydrazine, in isoniazid-stimulated HepG2 cells. Conclusion Treatment of hepatic cells with the herbo-vitamin medicine, Livogrit Vital, regulates IILI by modulation of oxidative and ER stress, apoptosis, and bioaccumulation of isoniazid and hydrazine. Collectively, Livogrit Vital could well be explored as an adjuvant hepatoprotective agent alongwith anti-TB medicines.

Abstract Background Rhodotorula glutinis, a specific type of yeast, has been recognised as a superior resource for generating selenium-enriched biomass that possesses exceptional nutritional and functional attributes. The purpose of this investigation was to assess the effect of sodium selenite at different concentrations on lipid and carotenoid synthesis, as well as the growth of R. glutinis. Methods The lipid’s fatty acid composition was determined using gas chromatography (GC). The vitamins were detected by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Transmission electron microscopy was used to detect the structural modification of yeast cells caused by the addition of sodium selenite to the growth medium, as well as the accumulation of elemental selenium in the yeast cells. Results The yeast cells demonstrated the ability to endure high concentrations of sodium selenite under lipid accumulation (LAM) and growth-promoting (YPD) conditions. 25.0 mM and 30.0 mM, respectively, were published as the IC50 values for the LAM and YPD conditions. This approach leads to heightened lipid levels with higher accumulation of oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids, carotenoids, and vitamins. Hence, this biomass has the potential to be a valuable additive for animal, fish, and poultry feed. The movement of nutrients and metabolites changes constantly in various plant organs and tissues during growth and development. Celosia argentea, a common vegetable in West and Central Africa is commonly cultivated for decorative use in regions like Malaysia in the tropics and subtropics. The objective of this research is to analyze the FTIR profile spectrophotometry, phytochemicals, mineral composition, vitamins, Proximate, and in vitro antioxidant activities of Celosia argentea leaves aqueous extract. Standard procedures were used to conduct Qualitative and Quantitative phytochemical screening and spectra infrared profile analysis. Minerals were determined with an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer, while proximate and vitamins were analyzed using AOAC methods. The antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH method. The antioxidant activity is directly linked to the presence of hydroxyl groups in phenolic compounds. The phytochemical analysis showed that the aqueous leaf extract of Celosia argentea has a significant level of alkaloids, saponins, tannins, flavonoids, and glycosides. Mineral analysis indicated a higher amount of calcium (375.14 mg/100 g) and a lower amount of Lead (0.08 mg/100 g). The scavenging activity of Celosia argentea against DPPH increased as the concentrations increased. The maximum scavenging activity of Celosia argentea was observed to be 93. 83% at a concentration of 0.5 mg/ml. Vitamins A, C, and E are found in substantial amounts, with vitamin E having the highest concentration at 201.54 mg/100 g DW. In summary, this study shows that Celosia argentea leaves have therapeutic benefits because of their bioactive compounds, proximate, Vitamins, and minerals. Celosia argentea has strong antioxidant properties & effective against oxidative harm.

Purpose/Background: Hair loss is a common presentation in primary care. This condition is caused by telogen effluvium and alopecia, among others. Several factors such as drugs, trauma, and emotional and physiological stress can lead to the development of hair loss in addition to vitamin and mineral deficiency. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of primary health physicians in Saudi Arabia on the use of vitamins and minerals for the treatment of hair loss with the research question of what is the knowledge and practice level among primary physicians in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia regarding hair loss. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out in primary health care centers in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected by a self-administered online questionnaire. The questionnaire included two parts; the first one is the personal information such as age, sex, year of experience, and current medical ranking. The second part included questions assessing the knowledge and practice of using vitamins and minerals for treatment of hair loss. Data were analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: A total of 146 physicians were included in the final analysis with a mean age of 41.65 (SD = 12.71). Slightly over half (54.1%) were juniors being general practitioners or residents. The mean knowledge score was 12.6 (SD = 2.83), and the mean practice score was 8 (SD = 3.43), with no difference between the total score between the senior and junior physicians, while some significant differences were noted in some items of both scores. No significant association was noted between knowledge and practice scores. Conclusion: The findings show the low scores of knowledge and practice among doctors about the causes and treatment of hair loss. Guidelines should guide practice regardless of seniority. Future studies should address each group separately.

Abstract Scope The underlying medical conditions and gut dysbiosis is known to influence COVID-19 severity in high-risk patients. The current review proposed the optimal usage of nutraceuticals & pharmacological interventions can help regulate the protective immune response and balance the regulatory functionality of gut microbiota. Summary Many studies have revealed that the probiotic interventions viz., Lactobacillus rhamnosus, L. plantarum & other bacterial spp. reduce IFNγ & TNF-α and increase IL-4 & IL-10 secretions to control the immunostimulatory effects in upper respiratory tract infection. Dietary fibres utilized by beneficial microbiota and microbial metabolites can control the NF-kB regulation. Vitamin C halts the propagation of pathogens and vitamin D and A modulate the GM. Selenium and Flavonoids also control the redox regulations. Interferon therapy can antagonize the viral replications, while corticosteroids may reduce the death rates. BCG vaccine reprograms the monocytes to build trained immunity. Bifidobacterium and related microbes were found to increase the vaccine efficacy. Vaccines against COVID-19 and season flu also boost the immunity profile for robust protection. Over all, the collective effects of these therapeutics could help increase the opportunities for faster recovery from infectious diseases. Conclusion The nutraceutical supplements and pharmacological medicines mediate the modulatory functionalities among beneficial microbes of gut, which in turn eliminate pathogens, harmonize the activity of immune cells to secrete essential regulatory molecular receptors and adaptor proteins establishing the homeostasis in the body organs through essential microbiome. Therefore, the implementation of this methodology could control the severity events during clinical sickness and reduce the mortalities.

The majority of the population living in large cities and some regions of the Russian Federation show signs of decreased immunity, most often manifested in colds. One of the ways to strengthen the human body’s immune system is to eliminate the deficiency of vitamins that have immunomodulatory properties. While developing the technology for the pita bakery product, dough has been prepared from a mixture of high-grade rye and wheat flour in equal quantities. As a source of vitamins that have a beneficial effect on the human immune system, a solution of pine needles has been added instead of half the amount of water. As a source of vitamin C, black currant and cranberry puree are used in the ratio of 1 : 1. An additional source of nutrients with immunomodulatory properties is dry ginger root powder added to the stuffing in an amount of 2 % by weight of the stuffing. Apple pectin has been used to stabilize the stuffing. A solution of pine needles is prepared by mixing an alcoholic infusion of pine needles and an aqueous decoction of pine needles in a ratio of 1 : 4. The pine needle solution has been used to replace half the amount of water used to prepare the dough. The developed bakery product "Pita with berry stuffing" is prepared with a ratio of pita to stuffing of 1 : 2 by weight. The developed bakery product can be recommended for stimulating and strengthening the immune system due to the additional inclusion of vitamins (C, K, A, B2, B6, B12) in the diet with beneficial effect on the human immune system, including for residents of the northern regions of Russia.

Abstract Microalgae and seaweed have been consumed as food for several decades to combat starvation and food shortages worldwide. The most famous edible microalgae species are Nostoc, Spirulina, and Aphanizomenon, in addition to seaweeds, which are used in traditional medicine and food, such as Nori, which is one of the most popular foods containing Pyropia alga as a major ingredient. Recently, many applications use algae-derived polysaccharides such as agar, alginate, carrageenan, cellulose, fucoidan, mannan, laminarin, ulvan, and xylan as gelling agents in food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics industries. Moreover, pigments (carotenoids particularly astaxanthins, chlorophylls, and phycobilins), minerals, vitamins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, peptides, proteins, polyphenols, and diterpenes compounds are accumulated under specific cultivation and stress conditions in the algal cells to be harvested and their biomass used as a feedstock for the relevant industries and applications. No less critical is the use of algae in bioremediation, thus contributing significantly to environmental sustainability. This review will explore and discuss the various applications of microalgae and seaweeds, emphasising their role in bioremediation, recent products with algal added-value compounds that are now on the market, and novel under-developing applications such as bioplastics and nanoparticle production. Nonetheless, special attention is also drawn towards the limitations of these applications and the technologies applied, and how they may be overcome.

Abstract Enhancement of plant growth at early growth stages is usually associated with the stimulation of various metabolic activities, which is reflected on morphological features and yield quantity and quality. Vitamins is considered as anatural plant metabolites which makes it a safe and ecofriendly treatment when used in appropriate doses, for that this research aimed to study the effect of two different vitamin B forms (thiamine and pyridoxine) on Vicia faba plants as agrowth stimutator in addition to study it’s effect on plant as astrong antioxidant under salinity stress.Our findings demonstrated that both vitamin forms significantly increased seedling growth at germination and early growth stages, especially at 50 ppm for pyridoxine and 100 ppm for thiamine. Pyridoxine at 50 ppm increased seedling length by approximately 35% compared to control, while thiamine at 100 ppm significantly promoted seedling fresh and dry wt by 4.36 and 1.36 g, respectively, compared to control seedling fresh wt 2.17 g and dry weight 1.07 g. Irrigation with 100 mM NaCl had a negative impact on plant growth and processes as well as the uptake of several critical ions, such as K+ and Mg+2, increasing Na uptake in comparison to that in control plants. Compared to control plants irrigated with NaCl solution, the photosynthetic pigments, soluble sugars, soluble proteins, and total antioxidant capacity increased in the presence of pyridoxine and thiamine, both at 50 and 100 ppm salinity. The proline content increased in both treated and untreated plants subjected to salt stress compared to that in control plants. Thiamine, especially at 50 ppm, was more effective than pyridoxine at improving plant health under saline conditions. An increase in Vicia faba plant tolerance to salinity was established by enhancing antioxidant capacity via foliar application of vitamin B through direct and indirect scavenging methods, which protect cell macromolecules from damage by oxidative stress, the highest antioxidant capacity value 28.14% was recorded at 50 ppm thiamine under salinity stress.The provided results is aguide for more researches in plant physiology and molecular biology to explain plant response to vitamins application and the suggest the sequence by which vitamins work inside plant cell.

Dry eye disease (DED) is an ocular condition characterized by altered tear film homeostasis, resulting in symptoms like tear film instability, hyperosmolarity, inflammation, and neurosensory abnormalities. It affects visual acuity and quality of life and is influenced by age, gender, and environmental factors. The first line of treatment consists of dynamically developing artificial tears, gels, and eyelid sprays, which can be supplemented with natural ingredients for enhanced efficacy. Other therapeutic steps include auto-logous serum tears, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive eyedrops, or oral tablets. Management also targets Meibomian gland dysfunction and the ocular surface micro-biome. This article explores various therapeutic approaches, including natural compounds and complementary strategies. Natural compounds, such as vitamins, and herbal substances (e.g., trehalose), offer promising benefits in enhancing tear film stability and ocular surface protection. Apitherapeutic products like manuka honey and propolis exhibit antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, human tissue-derived solutions, such as auto-logous serum tears and amniotic membrane extracts, hold the potential for ocular surface regeneration. Other strategies, including polyherbal eye drops, liposomal eyelid sprays, and microbiome-supporting solutions offer alternative therapeutic avenues. Moreover, patient education, lifestyle modifications, and interdisciplinary collaboration play crucial roles in DED management, emphasizing the importance of holistic care approaches.

Protein deficiency is a major difficulty for human needs in the past few decades, while different types of aquatic species are rich in high quality protein. Therefore, aquaculture is considered as the main developing food production sector globally. Bacterial infections are the main problem for aquaculture, and their outbreaks have a great impact on productivity, and previously indiscriminate use of antibiotics to control them. However, the emergence of multidrug-resistant pathogens might lead to sudden infectious disease outbreaks resulting in serious economic loss. Immunostimulants application is an effective technique to protect and enhance the immune system of aquatic animals and therefore improve aquaculture production. Nutrient immunostimulants such as essential fatty acids, amino acids, vitamins, and minerals are the most important responsibility to improve aquaculture production, as well as the cost of this method, which is effective, non-toxic, and environment friendly. These nutrient immunostimulants are supportive to increase the immune system, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and infection resistance of aquatic animals. In addition, nutritional feed additives improved feed palatability and the excellence of aquatic products and also enhance gut functions. Some information is available on nutrient immunostimulants in aquaculture applications, and this review provides information on different kinds of nutritional administration used in aquaculture to enhance positive impacts on aquatic animals’ health as well as feed quality development. This review will provide theoretical references for the application of nutrient immunostimulants in aquatic feeds.

BACKGROUND: Season of birth has been associated with age at menarche. Maternal vitamin D levels in pregnancy may explain this effect. We investigated whether the season of first trimester or maternal 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 [25(OH)D3] levels were associated with pubertal timing in children. METHODS: We conducted a follow-up study of 15 819 children born in 2000-03 from the Puberty Cohort, nested in the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC). Mean differences in attaining numerous pubertal markers, including a combined estimate for the average age at attaining all pubertal markers, were estimated for low (November-April) relative to high (May-October) sunshine exposure season in the first trimester using multivariable interval-censored regression models. Moreover, we conducted a two-sample instrumental variable analysis using season as an instrument for maternal first-trimester 25(OH)D3 plasma levels obtained from a non-overlapping subset (n = 827) in the DNBC. RESULTS: For the combined estimate, girls and boys of mothers who had their first trimester during November-April had earlier pubertal timing than girls and boys of mothers whose first trimester occurred during May-October: -1.0 months (95% CI: -1.7 to -0.3) and -0.7 months (95% CI: -1.4 to -0.1), respectively. In the instrumental variable analysis, girls and boys also had earlier pubertal timing: respectively, -1.3 months (95% CI: -2.1 to -0.4) and -1.0 months (95% CI: -1.8 to -0.2) per SD (22 nmol/L) decrease in 25(OH)D3. CONCLUSIONS: Both first pregnancy trimester during November-April and lower 25(OH)D3 were associated with earlier pubertal timing in girls and boys.

Vitamin B6 is a vital micronutrient across cell types and tissues, and dysregulated B6 levels contribute to human disease. Despite its importance, how B6 vitamer levels are regulated is not well understood. Here, we provide evidence that B6 dynamics are rapidly tuned by precise compartmentation of pyridoxal kinase (PDXK), the rate-limiting B6 enzyme. We show that canonical Wnt rapidly led to the accumulation of inactive B6 by shunting cytosolic PDXK into lysosomes. PDXK was modified with methyl-arginine Degron (MrDegron), a protein tag for lysosomes, which enabled delivery via microautophagy. Hyperactive lysosomes resulted in the continuous degradation of PDXK and B6 deficiency that promoted proliferation in Wnt-driven colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. Pharmacological or genetic disruption of the coordinated MrDegron proteolytic pathway was sufficient to reduce CRC survival in cells and organoid models. In sum, this work contributes to the repertoire of micronutrient-regulated processes that enable cancer cell growth and provides insight into the functional impact of B6 deficiencies for survival.

Four of these foals were produced by equine neuroaxonal dystrophy-affected dams, developed clinical signs consistent with equine neuroaxonal dystrophy and had a diagnosis confirmed by histopathology. The remaining nine foals, produced by healthy mares, were vitamin E depleted and remained clinically healthy. An additional cohort of foals, produced by healthy mares, were supplemented with vitamin E (α-tocopherol; α-TOH) from birth and sampled similarly.ResultsSerum α-TOH concentrations were significantly higher in vitamin E supplemented healthy foals.
