152. Convergence analysis of C2 Hermite interpolatory subdivision schemes by explicit joint spectral radius formulas

Abstract

Subdivision schemes are popular iterative processes to build graphs of functions, curves and surfaces. We analyze the 2-point Hermite C2 subdivision scheme introduced by Merrien in [26]. For the analysis of its convergence and its smoothness properties we are concerned with the computation of the joint spectral radius of a family of 2 matrices associated with the scheme. In this paper, by an explicit computation of the joint spectral radius of such pairs of matrices, we determine necessary and sufficient conditions for the scheme to be C2 convergent, whenever it reproduces cubic polynomials. In addition, we present two one-parameter families of convergent subdivision schemes belonging to the class in [26] possessing interesting properties from the shape control point of view.

Abstract

We evaluated the protective effect of Diltiazem from pacing-induced myocardial ischemia in 9 patients (pts) with coronary heart disease (CAD) and stable effort angina by studying the changes in systemic and coronary hemodynamics during pacing. Hemodynamic parameters were evaluated at baseline and at peak pacing before and after Diltiazem, 25 mg i.v. Diltiazem prevented angina in 6 of 7 pts who presented angina in the control pacing. This beneficial effect was accompanied at peak pacing rate by a significant fall in ST depression, arterial pressure, rate-pressure product and left ventricular (LV) end-diastolic pressure, while no significant changes were observed in LV dp/dt max, coronary blood flow and coronary vascular resistance. Therefore, Diltiazem exerts a protective effect from pacing-induced myocardial ischemia in pts with CAD and stable effort angina, without impairing LV function. This beneficial effect is due to a reduction in myocardial metabolic requirements, rather than to an improvement of blood supply to the ischemic myocardium.

Abstract

The correlation between R wave voltage variations (delta R) and the angiographic severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) at progressively increasing heart rate (HR) steps was evaluated in 51 patients (pts) without CAD (OV), in 42 pts with single (SVD), in 43 with double (DVD) and in 59 pts with triple vessel disease (TVD). At the end of stress the sensitivity of delta R was higher in DVD and TVD pts than in SVD pts. There was no clear correlation between exercise-induced R wave changes and the angiographic severity of CAD, since the qualitative and quantitative delta R evaluation during effort showed similar changes in delta R for a wide range of HR's in the entire study population. Since different degrees of exercise tolerance were found in pts with SVD, DVD and TVD, we hypothesize that the correlation between delta R and the severity of CAD at the end of stress testing may be artifactual.

Abstract

The aim of this work is to assess the level of the human alkaline phosphatase enzyme (ALP) during palatal expansion with Quad-Helix (QH) appliance. A total of twenty-two orthodontic patients characterized by contraction of the upper jaw, that needed application of a QH in order to treat their condition, were included in this study. Gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) was collected at four different times: before cementation (T0), after two weeks (T1), after four weeks (T2) and after one year (T3) from application of QH. In each patient maxillary first molars, right (UM-right) and left (UM-left), which were connected with bands to QH, were used for testing; first lower molars were used as Controls (LM-right, LM-left). Data show that ALP level in tension sites was proportional to the average increase of the inter-molar distance; on the contrary, the enzymatic level in compression sites was characterized by an inverse trend. The only exception to this phenomenon was recorded after one year (T3), when the increase of ALP level in both sites of tension and compression was ascribed to a mild inflammation due to bacterial plaque accumulation. The level of ALP in control sites was constant for the whole period of observation. The described ALP fluctuations in accordance with the inter-molar distance increment, shows that the main action of QH on bone remodelling was exerted during the fourth week (T2); for this reason, the monitoring of this enzyme could be used as a marker of effective function of the QH appliance.

Abstract

In this study multivariate analysis was adopted to establish how simultaneous changes in heart rate (HR), blood pressure (BP) and work load (W) can affect systolic time intervals (STI). Thus, 13 normal volunteers underwent two consecutive exercise stress tests in the supine and upright position on a bicycle ergometer. By multivariate analysis it was shown that, while in the supine position left ventricular ejection time (LVET) is influenced by HR and W (LVET) = 330.6 - 0.76 HR - 0.41 W, F = 224, P is less than 0.001), in the upright position LVET changes are due only to HR variations (LVET = 309 - 0.88 HR, P is less than 0.001). Pre-ejection period (PEP) in both positions is related to HR and W, but this latter has a non-linear influence (supine: PEP = 110.9 - 0.15 HR -0.34 W + 0.0012 W(2), F = 56.4, P is less than 0.001; upright: PEP = 119 - 0.16 HR - 0.5 W + 0.0025 W(2), F = 86.7, P is less than 0.001). Finally, PEP/LVET ratio is correlated both in the supine and upright position with maximal BP, HR and W; however, the influence of HR and BP is different in the two positions (supine: PEP/LVET = 0.259 + 0.00047 BP + 0.00068 HR - 0.00167 W + 0.000013 W(2), F = 5.68, P is less than 0.01; upright: PEP/LVET = 0.201 + 0.0011 HR - 0.00371 W + 0.00016 W(2), F = 4.79, P is less than 0.01).
