- Abstract
We present an extragalactic survey using observations from the Atacama Large Millime- ter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to characterize galaxy populations up to z = 0.35: the Valpara´ıso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). We use ALMA Band-3 CO(1–0) obser- vations to study the molecular gas content in a sample of 67 dusty normal star-forming galaxies selected from the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS). We have spectrally detected 49 galaxies at >5σ significance and 12 others are seen at low significance in stacked spectra. CO luminosities are in the range of (0.03–1.31) × 1010 K km s−1 pc2, equivalent to log(Mgas/M) = 8.9–10.9 assuming an αCO= 4.6 (K km s−1 pc2)−1, which perfectly complements the parameter space previously explored with local and high-z normal galaxies. We compute the optical to CO size ratio for 21 galaxies resolved by ALMA at ∼3.5 arcsec resolution (6.5 kpc), finding that the molecular gas is on average ∼ 0.6 times more compact than the stellar component. We obtain a global Schmidt–Kennicutt relation, given by log[:ESFR/(Myr−1 kpc−2)] = (1.26 ± 0.02) × log[:EMH2/(Mpc−2)] − (3.6 ± 0.2). We find a significant fraction of galaxies lying at ‘intermediate efficiencies’ between a long-standing mode of star formation activity and a starburst, specially at LIR = 1011–12 L. Combining our observations with data taken from the literature, we propose that star formation efficiencies can be parametrized by log [SFR/MH2 ] = 0.19 × (log LIR − 11.45) − 8.26 −0.41 × arctan[−4.84 (log LIR − 11.45)]. Within the redshift range we explore (z < 0.35), we identify a rapid increase of the gas content as a function of redshift.

ObjectiveThe noncompetitive -amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptor antagonist perampanel was shown in phase III trials to be an effective and well-tolerated adjunctive treatment for partial-onset seizures. In adolescents, it is necessary to characterize cognitive, neuropsychological, and behavioral side effects of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). The current analysis focuses on behavioral outcomes, efficacy, and safety of perampanel in adolescents. MethodsAdolescents (12-17 years) on a stable regimen of 1-3 AEDs for partial-onset seizures were randomized (2:1 ratio) to receive up to 12 mg/day perampanel or placebo. Alongside efficacy, cognitive, and neuropsychological assessments, behavioral outcomes were measured with the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) before and after a 19-week titration and maintenance phase. ResultsOf the randomized patients, 85 received perampanel and 48 received placebo. Median reduction in seizure frequency from baseline was 58.0% for perampanel and 24.0% for placebo (p = 0.079). More patients had seizure frequency reduced by 50% after perampanel (n = 49 [59.0%]) than placebo (n = 17 [37.0%]; p = 0.0144). Changes in behavior were minimal, and there were no differences between groups on competency (p = 0.619) or problems (p = 0.174). A greater proportion of placebo patients were classified in the CBCL clinical range for competency at end of treatment, whereas the number in the perampanel group remained unchanged. The overall safety profile was similar to that reported previously for perampanel; most frequently reported adverse events (AEs) were dizziness (26 patients [30.6% vs. 14.6% placebo]), somnolence (13 patients [15.3% vs. 4.2%]), and headache (nine patients [10.6% vs. 14.6%]). Aggression was reported in seven patients receiving perampanel (8.2% vs. 2.1% placebo); two of these were serious AEs, with neither requiring treatment discontinuation. SignificanceAdjunctive perampanel is efficacious and well tolerated in adolescents with partial-onset seizures, and appears to have no clinically important impact on behavior measured using the CBCL.

Behavior ,Disability ,Comorbidities - Abstract
The management and needs of people with intellectual disability (ID) and epilepsy are well evidenced; less so, the comorbidity of behavioral disorder in this population. "Behavioral disorder" is defined as behaviors that are difficult or disruptive, including stereotypes, difficult or disruptive behavior, aggressive behavior toward other people, behaviors that lead to injury to self or others, and destruction of property. These have an important link to emotional disturbance. This report, produced by the Intellectual Disability Task Force of the Neuropsychiatric Commission of the ILAE, aims to provide a brief review of some key areas of concern regarding behavioral disorder among this population and proposes a range of research and clinical practice recommendations generated by task force members. The areas covered in this report were identified by experts in the field as being of specific relevance to the broad epilepsy community when considering behavioral disorder in persons with epilepsy and ID; they are not intended to be exhaustive. The practice recommendations are based on the authors' review of the limited research in this field combined with their experience supporting this population. These points are not graded but can be seen as expert opinion guiding future research and clinical practice.

Objective: To characterize, in adolescents aged 12-17, the pharmacokinetic (PK) profile of perampanel, the impact of intrinsic and extrinsic factors on PK, and the relationships between perampanel exposure and cognitive function, seizure frequency, and responder status. Methods: Population PK analysis used plasma concentration data from Phase II study 235 (NCT01161524), in which adolescents with inadequately controlled POS despite treatment with 1-3 antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) were randomized to receive once daily oral placebo or perampanel (8-12 mg/day) for 19 weeks, pooled with data from adolescent patients in perampanel Phase III studies 304, 305, 306. Exposure-cognition and exposure-efficacy relationships were modelled using data from study 235. Results: Population PK results from 152 adolescent patients revealed a perampanel apparent clearance of 0.729 L/h, consistent with previous analyses in adolescents and adults. Clearance was increased with coadministration of inducing AEDs (carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine and phenytoin), and was slightly higher in females. The PK/pharmacodynamics (PD) analysis for cognition (n = 110) showed that increasing perampanel exposure had no significant effect on overall cognition, measured by the Cognitive Drug Research global cognition score. The PK/PD analysis for efficacy (n = 123) showed a significant decrease in seizure frequency and significant increased probability of being a responder, as perampanel concentration increased both in the presence and absence of inducing AEDs. Carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine and phenytoin reduced perampanel exposure in adolescents, but reduced the magnitude of seizure frequency reduction and responder probability to a lesser extent. Significance: Pharmacokinetics of perampanel are similar in adolescents to adults. Increasing perampanel exposure reduces seizure frequency and increases probability of being a responder regardless of concomitant inducers. The lack of relationship between perampanel exposure and cognitive function suggests a benign cognitive profile for this AED in adolescents. We await results from long-term exposure. Environmental economics can be applied to enhance areas and contribute to the conservation and protection of the environmental richness of ecosystems. It is a powerful tool that contributes in a general way to preserve nature, as well as planning and landing management. This research was developed on the Fundo El Carmen property, located in the city of Quilpué in Chile, with a main objective to value environmental goods and services. According to land planning instruments, in the results we present considerations oriented to environmental conservation at local and regional level. It is worth to note that for the Fundo El Carmen property the existing instruments did not deliver environmental conservation uses based on the proper identification of the highest value areas, consequently dismissing the biggest part of this environmental wealth.

We report the discovery of an L dwarf companion to the A3V star Circini. VVV J151721.49-585131.5, or Cir B, was identified in a proper motion and parallax catalogue of the Vista Variables in the Va Lctea survey as having near infrared luminosity and colour indicative of an early L dwarf, and a proper motion and parallax consistent with that of Cir. The projected separation of $\sim$3.6' corresponds to $6656$ au, which is unusually wide. The most recent published estimate of the age of the primary combined with our own estimate based on newer isochrones yields an age of $370-500$ Myr. The system therefore serves as a useful benchmark at an age greater than that of the Pleiades brown dwarfs and most other young L dwarf benchmarks. We have obtained a medium resolution echelle spectrum of the companion which indicates a spectral type of L1.0$\pm$0.5 and lacks the typical signatures of low surface gravity seen in younger brown dwarfs. This suggests that signs of low surface gravity disappear from the spectra of early L dwarfs by an age of $\sim370-500$ Myr, as expected from theoretical isochrones. The mass of Cir B is estimated from the BHAC15 isochrones as $0.056\pm0.007$ M$_{\odot}$., Accepted for publication in the MNRAS main journal

sediment monitoring ,debris flow ,bed load ,sediment transport - Abstract
The SedAlp project contributes to an integrated management of sediment transport in Alpine basins. It is directed to an effective reduction of sediment-related risk while promoting the enhancement of riverine ecosystems and reducing the impacts of hydropower plants (balancing the implementation of EU Directives and national law e.g. RES, WFD, NGP etc.). SedAlp includes pilot actions in various representative Alpine river basins of five countries and contributes in particular to monitor sediment and wood transfer in a large set of Alpine catchments. A major goal of the project was to understand spatial and temporal variability of processes and to provide planning, warning and predictive tools but also sediment and wood management recommendations for protecting people. Furthermore the project includes strategy policy development and implementation actions for the improvement of sediment continuity in Alpine river basins. SedAlp regards the geological and climatic variability across the Alps that generate complex patterns of sediment transfer, whereas management conflicts are similar. To reach the ambitious goals of the project, it is essential to understand the key processes of sediment and wood transport. Workpackage 5 with the title "sediment transport monitoring" was focused to enhance the knowledge about these transport processes by conducting the first standardized transnational monitoring of sediment and wood transport in Alpine basins. WP5 concentrated on monitoring and assessing fluxes of sediment and wood at the local scale. Measured fluxes are strongly depending on the supply from the catchment and on the connectivity to source areas, analysed in WP4. The output of WP5 feeds WP6 which studied the interferences between structures and sediment/wood fluxes and forms the basis for WP7 which linked the catchment with channel processes. Finally, the results of WP5 contribute to policy recommendations in WP8. Within WP5, monitoring activities on 28 different pilot sites in Austria, Germany, France, Italy and Slovenia have been conducted between 2012 and 2015. The monitored transport processes covered woody debris, debris flow, bedload and suspended load. The different pilot sites showed a great diversity in catchment size, channel slope and hydraulic parameters and covered the whole bandwidth from small, high alpine catchments (e.g. Strimm: 5 km² catchment size, 2427 m elevation a.s.l) to large catchments in the alpine valleys (e.g. Drau/Dellach: 2131 km² catchment size, 600 m elevation a.s.l). With the results of the monitoring activities, a database using different parameters regarding the transport process has been established and reflects the big diversity of the different pilot sites. The coordinated sediment transport monitoring outlined the links between the various processes responsible for sediment delivery at catchment scale and stresses out the need for a closer integration between the monitoring of various sediment transport processes in Alpine headwaters. Due to the wide range of different measurement methods used within the project, one focus of this work package was to standardize the measurement procedures and harmonize data analysis. This led to the 1st milestone "Protocol on standardized data collection methods in sediment transport monitoring for transboundary exchange". These protocols were intended to describe the used monitoring techniques and data processing methods for debris flows, wood transport and bedload transport. Furthermore, the protocols work also as guidelines to assist in choosing the appropriate monitoring method for supporting prospective monitoring efforts. 4 An important aspect of the project was to understand spatial and temporal variability of the monitored processes. The observed appearance of clockwise and counter clockwise hysteresis effects between sediment and discharge, showed the significant role of the location of the active sediment source in the temporal variability of sediment transport. Analysis of the spatial distribution showed an evolvement of the bedload transport width with increasing discharge which provides vital information for an improved planning of river related measures. To determine these process related variability, the use of appropriate monitoring methods as well as their right application is of great importance. Indirect monitoring methods (e.g. geophone devices) pointed out their potential in the automatic and continuous detection of these transport processes. The presented data reflect a high spatial and temporal variability in the occurrence of bedload, suspended load debris flow and wood transport and reveal significant consequences for the practical usage of monitoring methods, data and application. Many river engineering tasks require detailed information about the extent of sediment transport and wood mobility, which are provided by sediment and wood transport relations and equations. The 3rd milestone "First set of practically applicable bedload/wood transport relations and models" gives an overview about the most common transport relations and formulas. Furthermore it presents the difficulties and challenges in the application of these relations and shows the last developments in improving transport equations. The comparison between measured and calculated specific bedload transport rates showed substantial differences in the derived results. For the practical use of these relations it is strongly recommended to select, calibrate and validate the sediment and wood transport equations using monitored field data. The evaluation of river restoration projects showed the need of an improved process understanding between sediment transport an engineering measures. The functionality and sustainability of river restoration measures are, beside the hydrologic and hydraulic conditions, mainly depending on the superior sediment regime and thus the sediment input into the reach. By increase or decrease of the mean sediment input, the hydraulic and thus morphological conditions of the reach need to rearrange to the given input by e.g. lateral and vertical adjustments of the river bed or by changing the river type.

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) resolved observations of molecular gas in galaxies up to |$z$| = 0.35 to characterize the role of global galactic dynamics on the global interstellar medium properties. These observations consist of a sub-sample of 39 galaxies taken from the Valparaíso ALMA Line Emission Survey (VALES). From the CO(J = 1–0) emission line, we quantify the kinematic parameters by modelling the velocity fields. We find that the infrared (IR) luminosity increases with the rotational to dispersion velocity ratio (V
rot /σ|$v$| , corrected for inclination). We find a dependence between Vrot /σ|$v$| and the [C ii ]/IR ratio, suggesting that the so-called [C ii ] deficit is related to the dynamical state of the galaxies. We find that global pressure support is needed to reconcile the dynamical mass estimates with the stellar masses in our systems with low Vrot /σ|$v$| values. The star formation rate (SFR) is weakly correlated with the molecular gas fraction (|$f_{\rm H_2}$|) in our sample, suggesting that the release of gravitational energy from cold gas may not be the main energy source of the turbulent motions seen in the VALES galaxies. By defining a proxy of the 'star formation efficiency' (SFE) parameter as the SFR divided by the CO luminosity (SFE′ ≡ SFR/ L |$^{\prime }_{\rm CO}$|), we find a constant SFE′ per crossing time (tcross ). We suggest that tcross may be the controlling time-scale in which the star formation occurs in dusty |$z$| ∼ 0.03–0.35 galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract

- Abstract
Dynamic vision sensors (DVS) are frame-free sensors with an asynchronous variable-rate output that is ideal for hard real-time dynamic vision applications under power and latency constraints. Post-processing of the digital sensor output can reduce sensor noise, extract low level features, and track objects using simple algorithms that have previously been implemented in software. In this paper we present an FPGA-based framework for event-based processing that allows uncorrelated-event noise removal and real-time tracking of multiple objects, with dynamic capabilities to adapt itself to fast or slow and large or small objects. This framework uses a new hardware platform based on a Lattice FPGA which filters the sensor output and which then transmits the results through a super-speed Cypress FX3 USB microcontroller interface to a host computer. The packets of events and timestamps are transmitted to the host computer at rates of 10 Mega events per second. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate a low latency of 10us for tracking and computing the center of mass of a detected object.
