QUBIC (Q \& U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is an international ground-based experiment dedicated in the measurement of the polarized fluctuations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). It is based on bolometric interferometry, an original detection technique which combine the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer with the sensitivity of low temperature incoherent detectors. QUBIC will be deployed in Argentina, at the Alto Chorrillos mountain site near San Antonio de los Cobres, in the Salta province. The QUBIC detection chain consists in 2048 NbSi Transition Edge Sensors (TESs) cooled to 350mK.The voltage-biased TESs are read out with Time Domain Multiplexing based on Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) at 1 K and a novel SiGe Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) at 60 K allowing to reach an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128. The QUBIC experiment is currently being characterized in the lab with a reduced number of detectors before upgrading to the full instrument. I will present the last results of this characterization phase with a focus on the detectors and readout system., Comment: Conference proceedings submitted to the Journal of Low Temperature Physics for LTD18

The strong magnetic field of neutron stars is intimately coupled to the observed temperature and spectral properties, as well as to the observed timing properties (distribution of spin periods and period derivatives). Thus, a proper theoretical and numerical study of the magnetic field evolution equations, supplemented with detailed calculations of microphysical properties (heat and electrical conductivity, neutrino emission rates) is crucial to understand how the strength and topology of the magnetic field vary as a function of age, which in turn is the key to decipher the physical processes behind the varied neutron star phenomenology. In this review, we go through the basic theory describing the magneto-thermal evolution models of neutron stars, focusing on numerical techniques, and providing a battery of benchmark tests to be used as a reference for present and future code developments. We summarize well-known results from axisymmetric cases, give a new look at the latest 3D advances, and present an overview of the expectations for the field in the coming years., Comment: Accepted for Living Reviews in Computational Astrophysics. 64 pages, 20 figures

174. A novel approach for the analysis of the geometry involved in determining light curves of pulsars

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
In this work, we introduce the use of the differential geometry Frenet-Serret equations to describe a magnetic line in a pulsar magnetosphere. These equations, which need to be solved numerically, fix the magnetic line in terms of their tangent, normal, and binormal vectors at each position, given assumptions on the radius of curvature and torsion. Once the representation of the magnetic line is defined, we provide the relevant set of transformations between reference frames; the ultimate aim is to express the map of the emission directions in the star co-rotating frame. In this frame, an emission map can be directly read as a light curve seen by observers located at a certain fixed angle with respect to the rotational axis. We provide a detailed step-by-step numerical recipe to obtain the emission map for a given emission process, and give a set of simplified benchmark tests. Key to our approach is that it offers a setting to achieve an effective description of the system's geometry {\it together} with the radiation spectrum. This allows to compute multi-frequency light curves produced by a specific radiation process (and not just geometry) in the pulsar magnetosphere, and intimately relates with averaged observables such as the spectral energy distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We apply a synchro-curvature spectral emission model based on characterizing the dynamics of magnetospheric particles to fit the phase-average spectra of the most extended database for the non-thermal spectra of pulsars. We consider 36 pulsars with well-determined non-thermal spectra from X-rays to gamma-rays. The sample includes Crab and Crab twin, for which the spectra extends even to the optical/ultraviolet and infrared energies. We find that the model --with just three physical parameters and a global scaling-- can fit the observations well across eight orders of magnitude for 18 of the 36 pulsars studied. Additionally, we find a set of 8 pulsars for which the model still provides arguably good fits and another set of 10 pulsars for which the model fails in reproducing the spectra. We discuss why, propose and provide physical interpretations for a simple model extension (related to the geometry of the accelerating system with regards to the observer) that allows dealing with all such cases, ultimately providing very good fits for all pulsars. The extended model is still austere, adding only two additional parameters to the former set, of the same kind of the ones previously used. We use these fits to discuss issues going from the observed spectral origin, to the extent of the dominance of synchrotron or curvature regimes, the use of a model as predictor for searching new non-thermal pulsars starting from gamma-ray surveys, and how the model offers a setting where phase shifts between X-ray and gamma-ray light curves would naturally arise., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables. 176. Gradient sub-grid-scale model for relativistic MHD Large Eddy Simulations

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
MHD turbulence is likely to play an important role in several astrophysical scenarios where the magnetic Reynolds is very large. Numerically, these cases can be studied efficiently by means of Large Eddy Simulations, in which the computational resources are used to evolve the system only up to a finite grid size. The resolution is not fine enough to capture all the relevant small-scale physics at play, which is instead effectively modeled by a set of additional terms in the evolution equations, dubbed as sub-grid-scale model. Here we extend such approach, commonly used in non-relativistic/non-magnetic/incompressible fluid dynamics, applying the so-called gradient model to a general set of balance-law equations, that includes the relevant case in which a non-trivial inversion of conserved to primitive fields is needed. In particular, we focus on the relativistic compressible ideal MHD scenario, providing for the first time (and for any equation of state) all the additional sub-grid-scale terms. As an application, we consider box simulations of the relativistic Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, which is also the first mechanism responsible for the magnetic field amplification in binary neutron star mergers and cannot yet be fully captured by the finest-grid and longest simulations available. The performance of our model is numerically assessed by comparing it to the residuals arising from the filtering of high-resolution simulations. We find that the model can fit very well those residuals from resolutions a few times higher. Although the application shown here explicitly considers the Minkowski metric, it can be directly extended to general relativity, thus settling the basis to implement the gradient sub-grid model in a GRMHD binary merger. Our results suggest that this approach will be potentially able to unveil much better the small-scale dynamics achievable in full GRMHD simulations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures. Computer Science - Logic in Computer Science ,Computer Science - Cryptography and Security ,Mathematics - Logic - Abstract
The main objective of this paper is to define a logic for reasoning about distributed time-stamped claims. Such a logic is interesting for theoretical reasons, i.e., as a logic per se, but also because it has a number of practical applications, in particular when one needs to reason about a huge amount of pieces of evidence collected from different sources, where some of the pieces of evidence may be contradictory and some sources are considered to be more trustworthy than others. We introduce the Time-Stamped Claim Logic including a sound and complete sequent calculus that allows one to reduce the size of the collected set of evidence and removes inconsistencies, i.e., the logic ensures that the result is consistent with respect to the trust relations considered. In order to show how Time-Stamped Claim Logic can be used in practice, we consider a concrete cyber-attribution case study.

The secure operation of future power systems will rely on better coordination between transmission system and distribution system operators. Increasing integration of renewables throughout the whole system is challenging the traditional operation. To tackle this problem, the SmartNet project proposes and evaluates five different coordination schemes between system operators using three benchmark scenarios from Denmark, Italy, and Spain. In the project, field tests in each of the benchmark countries are complemented with a number of laboratory validation tests, to cover scenarios that cannot be tested in field trials. This paper presents the outcome of these laboratory tests. Three tests are shown, focusing on controller validation, analysis of communication impacts, and how well price-based controls can integrate with the SmartNet coordination schemes. The results demonstrate important indications for the field tests and also show some of the limitations with the current implementations of the coordinations schemes., Comment: 2019 IEEE PowerTech Milan

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
Recent detections by the gravitational wave facilities LIGO/Virgo have opened a window to study the internal structure of neutron stars through the gravitational waves emitted during their coalescence. In this work we explore, through numerical simulations, the gravitational radiation produced by the merger of binary neutron stars with dark matter particles trapped on their interior, focusing on distinguishable imprints produced by these dark matter cores. Our results reveal the presence of a strong m = 1 mode in the waveforms during the post-merger stage, together with other relevant features. Comparison of our results with observations might allow us to constraint the amount of dark matter in the interior of neutron star., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

Performing accurate large eddy simulations in compressible, turbulent magnetohydrodynamics is more challenging than in non-magnetized fluids due to the complex interplay between kinetic, magnetic and internal energy at different scales. Here we extend the sub-grid-scale gradient model, so far used in the momentum and induction equations, to account also for the unresolved scales in the energy evolution equation of a compressible ideal MHD fluid with a generic equation of state. We assess the model by considering box simulations of the turbulence triggered across a shear layer by the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, testing cases where the small-scale dynamics cannot be fully captured by the resolution considered, such that the efficiency of the simulated dynamo effect depends on the resolution employed. This lack of numerical convergence is actually a currently common issue in several astrophysical problems, where the integral and fastest-growing-instability scales are too far apart to be fully covered numerically. We perform a-priori and a-posteriori tests of the extended gradient model. In the former, we find that, for many different initial conditions and resolutions, the gradient model outperforms other commonly used models in terms of correlation with the residuals coming from the filtering of a high-resolution run. In the second test, we show how a low-resolution run with the gradient model is able to quantitatively reproduce the evolution of the magnetic energy (the integrated value and the spectral distribution) coming from higher-resolution runs. This extension is the first step towards the implementation in relativistic magnetohydrodynamics., Comment: 25 pages, 23 figures, 2 tables. Submitted as a first revision

We apply formal methods to lay and streamline theoretical foundations to reason about Cyber-Physical Systems (CPSs) and physics-based attacks, i.e., attacks targeting physical devices. We focus on a formal treatment of both integrity and denial of service attacks to sensors and actuators of CPSs, and on the timing aspects of these attacks. Our contributions are fourfold. (1)~We define a hybrid process calculus to model both CPSs and physics-based attacks. (2)~We formalise a threat model that specifies MITM attacks that can manipulate sensor readings or control commands in order to drive a CPS into an undesired state, and we provide the means to assess attack tolerance/vulnerability with respect to a given attack. (3)~We formalise how to estimate the impact of a successful attack on a CPS and investigate possible quantifications of the success chances of an attack. (4)~We illustrate our definitions and results by formalising a non-trivial running example in Uppaal SMC, the statistical extension of the Uppaal model checker; we use Uppaal SMC as an automatic tool for carrying out a static security analysis of our running example in isolation and when exposed to three different physics-based attacks with different impacts., Comment: This document extends the paper "A Formal Approach to Physics-Based Attacks in Cyber-Physical Systems" that will appear in ACM Transactions on Privacy and Security by providing proofs that are worked out in full details. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1611.01377

Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence - Abstract
Meteorological forecasting provides reliable prediction about the future weather within a given interval of time. Meteorological forecasting can be viewed as a form of hybrid diagnostic reasoning and can be mapped onto an integrated conceptual framework. The automation of the forecasting process would be helpful in a number of contexts, in particular: when the amount of data is too wide to be dealt with manually; to support forecasters education; when forecasting about underpopulated geographic areas is not interesting for everyday life (and then is out from human forecasters' tasks) but is central for tourism sponsorship. We present logic MeteoLOG, a framework that models the main steps of the reasoner the forecaster adopts to provide a bulletin. MeteoLOG rests on several traditions, mainly on fuzzy, temporal and probabilistic logics. On this basis, we also introduce the algorithm Tournament, that transforms a set of MeteoLOG rules into a defeasible theory, that can be implemented into an automatic reasoner. We finally propose an example that models a real world forecasting scenario.

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
In this letter, we present the first 3D force-free general relativity simulations of the magnetosphere dynamics related to the magnetar outburst/flare phenomenology. Starting from an initial dipole configuration, we adiabatically increase the helicity by twisting the footprints of a spot on the stellar surface and follow the succession of quasi-equilibrium states until a critical twist is reached. Twisting beyond that point triggers instabilities that results in the rapid expansion of magnetic field lines, followed by reconnection, as observed in previous axi-symmetric simulations. If the injection of magnetic helicity goes on, the process is recurrent, periodically releasing a similar amount of energy, of the order of a few % of the total magnetic energy. From our current distribution, we estimate the local temperature assuming that dissipation occurs mainly in the highly resistive outermost layer of the neutron star. We find that the temperature smoothly increases with injected twist, being larger for spots located in the tropical regions than in polar regions, and rather independent of their sizes. After the injection of helicity ceases, the magnetosphere relaxes to a new stable state, in which the persistent currents maintain the footprints area slightly hotter than before the onset of the instability., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Computer Science - Other Computer Science - Abstract
What if someone built a "box" that applies quantum superposition not just to quantum bits in the microscopic but also to macroscopic everyday "objects", such as Schr\"odinger's cat or a human being? If that were possible, and if the different "copies" of a man could exploit quantum interference to synchronize and collapse into their preferred state, then one (or they?) could in a sense choose their future, win the lottery, break codes and other security devices, and become king of the world, or actually of the many-worlds. We set up the plot-line of a new episode of Black Mirror to reflect on what might await us if one were able to build such a technology., Comment: 4 pages, 0 figures, Accepted at the "Re-Coding Black Mirror" workshop of the International Conference Data Protection and Democracy (CPDP)

It won't be long until our prostheses, ECG personal monitors, subcutaneous insulin infusors, glasses, etc. become devices of the Internet of Things (IoT), always connected for monitoring, maintenance, charging and tracking. This will be the dawn of the Smart Human, not just a user of the IoT but a Thing in the Internet. How long would it then take for hackers to attack us like they have been attacking IoT devices? What would happen if hackers were able to blackmail us threatening our IoT body parts? Smart Humans may become victims of the devastating attack of WannaDie, a new ransomware that could provide the plot-line for a possible future episode of the Black Mirror TV series., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, Accepted at the "Re-Coding Black Mirror" workshop of the International Conference Data Protection and Democracy (CPDP)

Consider the following set-up for the plot of a possible future episode of the TV series Black Mirror: human brains can be connected directly to the net and MiningMind Inc. has developed a technology that merges a reward system with a cryptojacking engine that uses the human brain to mine cryptocurrency (or to carry out some other mining activity). Part of our brain will be committed to cryptographic calculations (mining), leaving the remaining part untouched for everyday operations, i.e., for our brain's normal daily activity. In this short paper, we briefly argue why this set-up might not be so far fetched after all, and explore the impact that such a technology could have on our lives and our society., Comment: 4 pages, 0 figure, Accepted at the "Re-Coding Black Mirror" workshop of the International World Wide Web Conferences (WWW)

Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics - Abstract
In this paper we discuss the latest developments of the STRIP instrument of the "Large Scale Polarization Explorer" (LSPE) experiment. LSPE is a novel project that combines ground-based (STRIP) and balloon-borne (SWIPE) polarization measurements of the microwave sky on large angular scales to attempt a detection of the "B-modes" of the Cosmic Microwave Background polarization. STRIP will observe approximately 25% of the Northern sky from the "Observatorio del Teide" in Tenerife, using an array of forty-nine coherent polarimeters at 43 GHz, coupled to a 1.5 m fully rotating crossed-Dragone telescope. A second frequency channel with six-elements at 95 GHz will be exploited as an atmospheric monitor. At present, most of the hardware of the STRIP instrument has been developed and tested at sub-system level. System-level characterization, starting in July 2018, will lead STRIP to be shipped and installed at the observation site within the end of the year. The on-site verification and calibration of the whole instrument will prepare STRIP for a 2-years campaign for the observation of the CMB polarization., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, proceedings of the SPIE Astronomical Telescopes + Instrumentation conference "Millimeter, Submillimeter, and Far-Infrared Detectors and Instrumentation for Astronomy IX", on June 15th, 2018, Austin (TX)

Abstract Background Physical performance tests are a reflection of health in older adults. The Timed Up and Go test is an easy-to-administer tool measuring physical performance. In older adults undergoing oncologic surgery, an impaired TUG has been associated with higher rates of postoperative complications and increased short term mortality. The objective of this study is to investigate the association between physical performance and long term outcomes. Methods Patients aged ≥65 years undergoing surgery for solid tumors in three prospective cohort studies, ‘PICNIC’, ‘PICNIC B-HAPPY’ and ‘PREOP’, were included. The TUG was administered 2 weeks before surgery, a score of ≥12 seconds was considered to be impaired. Primary endpoint was 5-year survival, secondary endpoint was 30-day major complications. Survival proportions were estimated using Kaplan-Meier curves. Cox- and logistic regression analysis were used for survival and complications respectively. Hazard ratios (aHRs) and Odds ratios (aOR) were adjusted for literature-based and clinically relevant variables, and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were estimated using multivariable models. Results In total, 528 patients were included into analysis. Mean age was 75 years (SD 5.98), in 123 (23.3%) patients, the TUG was impaired. Five-year survival proportions were 0.56 and 0.49 for patients with normal TUG and impaired TUG respectively. An impaired TUG was an independent predictor of increased 5-year mortality (aHR 1.43, 95% CI 1.02-2.02). The TUG was not a significant predictor of 30-day major complications (aOR 1.46, 95% CI 0.70-3.06). Conclusions An impaired TUG is associated with increased 5-year mortality in older adults undergoing surgery for solid tumors. It requires further investigation whether an impaired TUG can be reversed and thus improve long-term outcomes. Trial registration The PICNIC studies are registered in the Dutch Clinical Trial database at www.trialregister.nl: NL4219 (2010-07-22) and NL4441 (2014-06-01). The PREOP study was registered with the Dutch trial registry at www.trialregister.nl: NL1497 (2008-11-28) and in the United Kingdom register (Research Ethics Committee reference 10/H1008/59). https://www.hra.nhs.uk/planning-and-improving-research/application-summaries/research-summaries/?page=15&query=preop&date_from=&date_to=&research_type=&rec_opinion=&relevance=true .
