Forty-four children with advanced acute leukemia were treated with cyclophosphamide (Cytoxan ). Complete remissions were observed in 8 and partial remissions in 5. The complete remissions were independent of antecedent or concomitant steroid therapy and persisted from 3 to 15 months. Three of these patients developed leukemic involvement of the central nervous system, though otherwise in complete remission, indicating that cyclophosphamide did not inhibit this complication. The previous favorable response of the patients achieving complete remission to the steroids 6-mercaptopurine and methotrexate ( Amethopterin) eliminated the possibility of any cross-resistance between these agents and cyclophosphamide. The most common side effect was leukopenia which was readily reversible by interruption of therapy. Hemorrhagic cystitis, alopecia, hepatitis, anorexia, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness were other reported side reactions. Cyclophosphamide appears to be an important addition to the chemotherapy of children with acute leukemia.

36 rats were used to determine the effects of: (a) footshock before specific training, (b) CS duration (6 vs 60 sec.), and (c) form of aversive conditioning (CER vs CAR) on heart rate both during the presentation of the CS and between presentations. All three tested variables were effective in modifying the heart-rate response to the CS while only CS duration altered heart rates between CS presentations.

A conference paper regarding the propagation of rootstock taxa by Duarte Nursery Inc. (DNI) in Central Valley, California is presented. It states that rootsrock was selected for the propagation because of its characteristics and similarity with scion. It says that micropropagation for the rootstock can be done with thermotherapy and meristem/shoot tip culture to have virus-free lines. It adds that micropropagation has the benefit of producing large production of plants in a sterile environment.

The therapeutic effectiveness of uracil mustard, 5 [bis (2 chloroethyl) amino] uracil, was evaluated by the Southwest Cancer Chemotherapy Study Group in children with metastatic Wilms's tumor. This clinical trial was conducted in accordance with the Group's "sensitivity spectrum" protocol for the systematic investigation of new agents against solid tumors of childhood.1Uracil mustard, an oral alkylating agent, is a substituted mechlorethamine hydrochloride (nitrogen mustard). In comparative experiments on animal tumors, uracil mustard was more effective than either chlorambucil or nitrogen mustard.2,3 This enhanced activity is thought to be due to an increased uptake of the uracil mustard into the desoxyribonucleic acid molecule because of the carrier action of uracil. There is no evidence that it acts as a uracil antagonist. In human malignancies it has been shown to be effective against chronic leukemias, lymphomas, and, occasionally, carcinoma of the lung and ovary and other neoplastic diseases.4-8

The prophylactic use of vitamin K in the newborn has been abandoned by some physicians because of conflicting reports as to its efficacy and safety. In the present study vitamin K1 was given either in doses of 5 mg. by mouth daily to the mother in the last month of pregnancy or in doses of 5 mg. intramuscularly to the infant at birth. A test series of 133 infants was treated prophylactically in this way. The contratest series consisted of 50 untreated infants. Among the 50, postcircumcision bleeding occurred 4 times and abnormal prothrombin values were observed 14 times. In the test group there was no postcircumcision bleeding, and the postnatal increase in prothrombin time was controlled without evidence of increased bilirubinemia or hemolysis.

The psychological impact of breast reconstruction has widely been described, and multiple studies show that reconstruction improves the well-being and quality of life of patients. In breast reconstruction, the goal is not only the morphological result, but mainly the patient’s perception of it. The objective of our study is to compare the physical and psychosocial well-being and satisfaction concerning the body image of patients who had reconstruction with breast implants to those of patients who had reconstruction with deep inferior epigastric artery perforator flaps. Our results demonstrated a similar quality of life between the two groups, but the satisfaction level was significantly higher in patients who had reconstruction with autologous tissue. Feedback from patients who have already received breast reconstruction may be useful in the decision-making process for future patients and plastic surgeons, enabling both to choose the reconstructive technique with the best long-term satisfaction.

The records of 52 children who died with histiocytosis X were reviewed to determine the cause of death and temporal relationship to diagnosis. 15% died less than 4 wks. from dlagnosis; 52% were dead within 8 wks. The highest early mortality rates were seen in children less than 1 yr. of age at diagnosis and those receiving combination chemotherapy as the first therapy. 442 of early death in children less than 1 yr. were attributed to infection compared to 17% in children over 1 yr. 8 of 10 early deaths in children receiving combination chemotherapy were attributed to complicating infection but no infectious cause was incriminated in 12 children receiving single agent therapy who died before 8 wks.Primary and secondary immunodeficiency disorders have been reported in association with histiocytosis × in young infants. In contrast to Hodgkin's disease and acute leukemia, combination chemotherapy has not been demonstrated to improve response rates above those achieved by component single agents in patients with poor prognostic indicators such as age or organ dysfunction. The present study would again suggest caution with the use of highly immunosuppressive regimens in young infants with hiatiocytosis X.
