151. Implications of ultra-high energy neutrino flux constraints for Lorentz-invariance violating cosmogenic neutrinos

Abstract

We consider the implications of Lorentz-invariance violation (LIV) on cosmogenic neutrino observations, with particular focus on the constraints imposed on several well-developed models for ultra-high energy cosmogenic neutrino production by recent results from the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) long-duration balloon payload, and Radio Ice Cherenkov Experiment (RICE) at the South Pole. Under a scenario proposed originally by Coleman and Glashow, each lepton family may attain maximum velocities that can exceed the speed of light, leading to energy-loss through several interaction channels during propagation. We show that future observations of cosmogenic neutrinos will provide by far the most stringent limit on LIV in the neutrino sector. We derive the implied level of LIV required to suppress observation of predicted fluxes from several mainstream cosmogenic neutrino models, and specifically those recently constrained by the ANITA and RICE experiments. We simulate via detailed Monte Carlo code the propagation of cosmogenic neutrino fluxes in the presence of LIV-induced energy losses. We show that this process produces several detectable effects in the resulting attenuated neutrino spectra, even at LIV-induced neutrino superluminality of (u_{\nu}-c)/c ~ 10^{-26}, about 13 orders of magnitude below current bounds., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; updates to introduction & references; To appear in PRD

Abstract

We set the first limits on the ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrino fluence at energies greater than 10^9 GeV from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) based on data from the second flight of the ANtarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA). During the 31 day flight of ANITA-II, 26 GRBs were recorded by Swift or Fermi. Of these, we analyzed the 12 GRBs which occurred during quiet periods when the payload was away from anthropogenic activity. In a blind analysis, we observe 0 events on a total background of 0.0044 events in the combined prompt window for all 12 low-background bursts. We also observe 0 events from the remaining 14 bursts. We place a 90% confidence level limit on the E^-4 prompt neutrino fluence of 2.5x10^17 GeV^3/cm^2 between 10^8 and 10^12 GeV from GRB090107A. This is the first reported limit on the UHE neutrino fluence from GRBs above 10^9 GeV, and the strongest limit above 10^8 GeV., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

A dramatic increase in the prevalence of major depression and diet-related disorders in adolescents has been observed over several decades, yet the mechanisms underlying this comorbidity have only recently begun to be elucidated. Exposure to western-style diet (WSD), high in both fats (45% kcal) and carbohydrates (35% kcal): e.g., high fat diet (HFD), has been linked to the development of metabolic syndrome-like symptoms and behavioral dysregulation in rodents, as similarly observed in the human condition. Because adolescence is a developmental period highlighted by vulnerability to both stress and poor diet, understanding the mechanism(s) underlying the combined negative effects of WSDs and stress on mood and reward regulation is critical. To this end, adolescent male C57 mice were exposed to vicarious social defeat stress (VSDS), a stress paradigm capable of separating physical (PS) versus psychological/emotional (ES) stress, followed by normal chow (NC), HFD, or a separate control diet high in carbohydrates (same sucrose content as HFD) and low in fat (LFD), while measuring body weight and food intake. Non-stressed control mice exposed to 5 weeks of NC or HFD showed no significant differences in body weight or social interaction. Mice exposed to VSDS (both ES and PS) gain weight rapidly 1 week after initiation of HFD, with the ES-exposed mice showing significantly higher weight gain as compared to the HFD-exposed control mice. These mice also exhibited a reduction in saccharin preference, indicative of anhedonic-like behavior. To further delineate whether high fat was the major contributing factor to these deficits, LFD was introduced. The mice in the VSDS + HFD gained weight more rapidly than the VSDS + LFD group, and though the LFD-exposed mice did not gain weight as rapidly as the HFD-exposed mice, both the VSDS + LFD- and VSDS + HFD-exposed mice exhibited attenuated response to the antidepressant fluoxetine. These data show that diets high in both fats and carbohydrates are responsible for rapid weight gain and reduced reward sensitivity; and that while consumption of diet high in carbohydrate and low in fat does not lead to rapid weight gain, both HFD and LFD exposure after stress leads to reduced responsiveness to antidepressant treatment.

Abstract

We have conducted a search for extended energy deposition trails left by ultra-relativistic magnetic monopoles interacting in Antarctic ice. The non-observation of any satisfactory candidates in the 31 days of accumulated ANITA-II flight data results in an upper limit on the diffuse flux of relativistic monopoles. We obtain a 90% C.L. limit of order 10^{-19}/(cm^2-s-sr) for values of Lorentz boost factor 10^{10}

Abstract

We report the observation of sixteen cosmic ray events of mean energy of 1.5 x 10^{19} eV, via radio pulses originating from the interaction of the cosmic ray air shower with the Antarctic geomagnetic field, a process known as geosynchrotron emission. We present the first ultra-wideband, far-field measurements of the radio spectral density of geosynchrotron emission in the range from 300-1000 MHz. The emission is 100% linearly polarized in the plane perpendicular to the projected geomagnetic field. Fourteen of our observed events are seen to have a phase-inversion due to reflection of the radio beam off the ice surface, and two additional events are seen directly from above the horizon., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, new figure added

Abstract

The Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) completed its second long-duration balloon flight in January 2009, with 31 days aloft (28.5 live days) over Antarctica. ANITA searches for impulsive coherent radio Cherenkov emission from 200 to 1200 MHz, arising from the Askaryan charge excess in ultra-high energy neutrino-induced cascades within Antarctic ice. This flight included significant improvements over the first flight in the payload sensitivity, efficiency, and a flight trajectory over deeper ice. Analysis of in-flight calibration pulses from surface and sub-surface locations verifies the expected sensitivity. In a blind analysis, we find 2 surviving events on a background, mostly anthropogenic, of 0.97+-0.42 events. Abstract

In the hopes of observing the highest-energy neutrinos (E> 1 EeV) populating the Universe, both past (RICE, AURA, ANITA) and current (RNO-G, ARIANNA, ARA and TAROGE-M) polar-sited experiments exploit the impulsive radio emission produced by neutrino interactions. In such experiments, rare single event candidates must be unambiguously identified above backgrounds. Background rejection strategies to date primarily target thermal noise fluctuations and also impulsive radio-frequency signals of anthropogenic origin. In this paper, we consider the possibility that 'fake' neutrino signals may also be generated naturally via the `triboelectric effect' This broadly describes any process in which force applied at a boundary layer results in displacement of surface charge, leading to the production of an electrostatic potential difference AV. Wind blowing over granular surfaces such as snow can induce such a potential difference, with subsequent coronal discharge. Discharges over timescales as short as nanoseconds can then lead to radio-frequency emissions at characteristic MHz-GHz frequencies. Using data from various past (RICE, AURA, SATRA, ANITA) and current (RNO G, ARIANNA and ARA) neutrino experiments, we find evidence for such backgrounds, which are generally characterized by: (a) a threshold wind velocity which likely depends on the experimental trigger criteria and layout; for the experiments considered herein, this value is typically O(10 m/s), (b) frequency spectra generally shifted to the low-end of the frequency regime to which current radio experiments are typically sensitive (100-200 MHz), (c) for the strongest background signals, an apparent preference for discharges from above-surface structures, although the presence of more isotropic, lower amplitude triboelectric discharges cannot be excluded.

Abstract

Das Spannungsfeld zwischen Personalisiertem Lernen auf der einen und Kooperativem Lernen auf der anderen Seite kann anhand theoretischer und empirischer Forschungsarbeiten sowohl für inklusive als auch für digitale Lehr-Lern-Umgebungen als konstitutiv gelten. Dieser Beitrag basiert daher auf der These, dass für die Zusammenführung inklusionsorientierter und digitaler Lehr-Lern-Umgebungen Prozesse der Personalisierung bzw. Individualisierung immer auch mit interaktionistischen bzw. kooperativen Lehr-Lern-Prozessen zu verbinden bzw. auszugleichen sind. Auf Basis einer theoretischen Herleitung dieses Spannungsfelds wird dessen notwendige Balancierung als Ausgangspunkt genutzt, um anhand der webbasierten App Getch Anforderungen an inklusive Software-Lösungen für den Schulunterricht zu illustrieren. Die App, die der – individuellen und kooperativen – Dokumentation, Strukturierung und Präsentation von Lerninhalten auf Basis multidimensionaler Darstellungsformen dient, wird im Kontext aktueller Apps anhand einzelner Funktionsweisen für Lernende und Lehrende zum Einsatz im Fachunterricht vorgestellt und mithilfe einer User-Story aus dem Mathematikunterricht exemplarisch konkretisiert. Abschliessend werden anhand eines Fazits unterschiedliche Perspektiven für die unterrichtliche Nutzung von Getch sowie für die weiterführende (fach-)unterrichtliche Forschung diskutiert., Based on theoretical and empirical research, the contradictory relationship between personalized learning on the one hand, and cooperative learning on the other hand can be considered to be constitutive for both inclusive as well as digital learning environments. Hence, this article argues that in combining inclusion-oriented and digital learning approaches, processes of personalization must be balanced with forms of cooperative learning. This necessity is being derived from the respective discourses and is used as a theoretical starting point to illustrate requirements for combining inclusion oriented and digital approaches in educational settings. By illustrating current apps and introducing the web-based app Getch, which supports – individual and interactive – documentation, structuring and presentation of learning content on the basis of multidimensional forms of representation, these requirements are being exemplified. Finally, a user-story is presented that shows possible ways of using Getch in math class. On the basis of a conclusion, different perspectives for the future use of Getch in are being discussed.

Der vorliegende Beitrag setzt sich mit der Frage auseinander, welche begrenzenden Faktoren sich in Bezug auf eine inklusiv-digital gestaltete Schule, auf Meso- und Mikroebene, identifizieren lassen und wie jene Begrenzungen aufgeweicht werden können. Hierfür werden die Ergebnisse aus vier Teilprojekten, des BMBF-geförderten Verbundprojektes Dig*In (Digitalisierung und Inklusion – Grundsatzfragen und Gelingensbedingungen einer inklusiven digitalen Schul- und Unterrichtsentwicklung) herangezogen. Innerhalb des Verbundprojektes wurden zwischen 2020 und 2021 Interviews, Gruppendiskussionen, Fokusgruppen und Workshops an deutschen Schulen durchgeführt, um den derzeitigen Zustand von Inklusion und Digitalisierung zu eruieren und analysieren. Die Teilprojekte I und II betrachten die Schulebene (Mesoebene) und geben einen Überblick über die konzeptionell übergeordnete Betrachtung der Verzahnung von Inklusion und Digitalisierung in Schule bzw. einen Einblick über bestehende Prozesse und Strukturen, welche die Verzahnung begrenzen oder begünstigen. Die Teilprojekte III und IV beleuchten die Unterrichtsebene (Mikroebene) und stellen dar, welche Potenziale der Einsatz digitaler Medien für die Ausgestaltung inklusiver Lehr-Lernszenarien und Arbeitsweisen mit sich bringt und welchen Begrenzungen sich Lehrpersonen gegenübersehen. Zusammenfassend konnte festgestellt werden, dass eine an inklusiven Werten und Prinzipien orientierte Schulkultur die Grundlage einer inklusiv-digital gestalteten Schule darstellt. Begrenzenden Faktoren – bspw. empfundener Doppelbelastung, unterschiedlichen Medienkompetenzen oder fehlendem Methodenwissen – begegnen die Lehrpersonen zumeist durch die Schaffung und Etablierung individueller Strukturen und Prozesse, wobei der Einsatz digitaler Medien als herausfordernd, aber zeitgleich auch förderlich für ein Mehr an Inklusion und Digitalisierung in Schule und Unterricht wahrgenommen wird., The focus of this article is to identify limiting factors in relation to an inclusive digitally designed school and how they can be overcome. Therefore, the results from the four subprojects of the BMBF-funded joint project Dig*In (Digitalization and Inclusion – Key questions and felicity conditions in inclusive and digital school and teaching development) are consulted. Within the joint project, interviews, group discussions, focus groups and workshops were conducted at german schools between 2020 and 2021 to investigate and analyze the current state of inclusion and digitization. Subprojects I and II focused on the school level (meso level) and provide an overview of the conceptual consideration of inclusion and digitization in school and an insight into the existing processes and structures of the implementation process. Subprojects III and IV focused on the teaching level (micro level) and illustrate the potential that the use of digital media offers for developing inclusive teaching and learning scenarios, and which limitations teachers have to overcome. It is evident, the basis of an inclusive digital school is a school culture oriented toward inclusive values and principles. Limiting factors are: different media competencies or a lack of methodological knowledge. Creating and establishing individual structures and processes teachers overcome these limitations. The use of digital media can be beneficial for the successful implementation of inclusion and digitization in schools and class yet also a challenge.

Abstract

We present estimates of line-of-sight distortion fields derived from the 95 GHz and 150 GHz data taken by BICEP2, BICEP3, and Keck Array up to the 2018 observing season, leading to cosmological constraints and a study of instrumental and astrophysical systematics. Cosmological constraints are derived from three of the distortion fields concerning gravitational lensing from large-scale structure, polarization rotation from magnetic fields or an axion-like field, and the screening effect of patchy reionization. We measure an amplitude of the lensing power spectrum $A_L^{\phi\phi}=0.95 \pm 0.20$. We constrain polarization rotation, expressed as the coupling constant of a Chern-Simons electromagnetic term $g_{a\gamma} \leq 2.6 \times 10^{-2}/H_I$, where $H_I$ is the inflationary Hubble parameter, and an amplitude of primordial magnetic fields smoothed over 1 Mpc $B_{1\text{Mpc}} \leq 6.6 \;\text{nG}$ at 95 GHz. We constrain the root mean square of optical-depth fluctuations in a simple "crinkly surface" model of patchy reionization, finding $A^\tau, Comment: 34 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5��$, or, in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL., 24 pages, 8 figures, 9 tables, submitted to ApJ. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1907.04473

Abstract

The BICEP3 Polarimeter is a small aperture, refracting telescope, dedicated to the observation of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at 95GHz. It is designed to target degree angular scale polarization patterns, in particular the very-much-sought-after primordial B-mode signal, which is a unique signature of cosmic inflation. The polarized signal from the sky is reconstructed by differencing co-localized, orthogonally polarized superconducting Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers. In this work, we present absolute measurements of the polarization response of the detectors for more than $\sim 800$ functioning detector pairs of the BICEP3 experiment, out of a total of $\sim 1000$. We use a specifically designed Rotating Polarized Source (RPS) to measure the polarization response at multiple source and telescope boresight rotation angles, to fully map the response over 360 degrees. We present here polarization properties extracted from on-site calibration data taken in January 2022. A similar calibration campaign was performed in 2018, but we found that our constraint was dominated by systematics on the level of $\sim0.5^\circ$. After a number of improvements to the calibration set-up, we are now able to report a significantly lower level of systematic contamination. Abstract

We summarize results from the third flight of the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), a NASA long-duration balloon payload that searches for radio emission from the interactions of ultra-high-energy neutrinos and cosmic rays. ANITAIII was launched in December 2014 and flew for 22 days. We report the results from multipleanalyses of the data, which search for Askaryan radio emission from neutrinos interacting in the Antarctic ice as well as geomagnetic radio emission from extensive air showers (EASs) induced by cosmic rays or a tau lepton created in an in-earth tau neutrino interaction. In the most sensitive Askaryan neutrino search, we find one eventon a pre-unblinding background of 0:7−0:3+0.5. Across all searches, including a dedicated EAS search, we find a total of 28 EAS-like events. One of these events is consistent with an upward-traveling EAS, with a post-unblinding background estimate of ⪷10−2.

Abstract

We characterize Galactic dust filaments by correlating BICEP/Keck and Planck data with polarization templates based on neutral hydrogen (H I) observations. Dust polarization is important for both our understanding of astrophysical processes in the interstellar medium (ISM) and the search for primordial gravitational waves in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In the diffuse ISM, H I is strongly correlated with the dust and partly organized into filaments that are aligned with the local magnetic field. We analyze the deep BICEP/Keck data at 95, 150, and 220 GHz, over the low-column-density region of sky where BICEP/Keck has set the best limits on primordial gravitational waves. We separate the H I emission into distinct velocity components and detect dust polarization correlated with the local Galactic H I but not with the H I associated with Magellanic Stream I. We present a robust, multifrequency detection of polarized dust emission correlated with the filamentary H I morphology template down to 95 GHz. For assessing its utility for foreground cleaning, we report that the H I morphology template correlates in B modes at a $\sim$10-65$\%$ level over the multipole range $20 < \ell < 200$ with the BICEP/Keck maps, which contain contributions from dust, CMB, and noise components. We measure the spectral index of the filamentary dust component spectral energy distribution to be $β= 1.54 \pm 0.13$. We find no evidence for decorrelation in this region between the filaments and the rest of the dust field or from the inclusion of dust associated with the intermediate velocity H I.
