Abstract

Metamaterials, an artificial periodic two- or three-dimensional configuration can change propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves (i.e., reflection, transmission, absorption). The current challenges in the field of metamaterial coatings are their manufacturing in large scale and large length scale. There is a clear need to enhance process technologies and scalability of these. Thermal spraying is a method used to deposit small to large scale coatings where the sprayed layer is typically formed by successive impact of fully or partially molten particles of a material exposed to various process conditions. This work aims to investigate the feasibility to manufacture large scale metamaterial coatings using the thermal spray technique and examine their response to solar radiation. Two types of coatings namely, Cr2O3 and TiO2 were deposited onto various substrates (e.g., steel, aluminium, glass, indium tin oxide (ITO) coated glass) with a fine wire mesh (143 µm and 1 mm aperture sizes) as the masking sheet to manipulate the surface pattern using suspension high-velocity oxy-fuel thermal spraying (S-HVOF) and atmospheric plasma-sprayed (APS) methods, respectively. Post deposition, their responses subjected to electromagnetic wave (between 250 nm to 2500 nm or Ultraviolet (UV)-Visible (Vis)-Infrared (IR) region) were characterised. The additional microstructural characterisation was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), three-dimensional profilometry and optical spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that through novel application of thermal spray techniques, large scale manufacturing of metamaterial coating is possible, and such material can affect the electromagnetic wave propagation. Abstract

A high pulse pressure (PP) predicts cardiovascular mortality in hypertension and in the elderly. We analyzed the data from the Italian Network of Congestive Heart Failure Registry to test the prognostic role of PP in patients with heart failure.A total of 8660 patients with heart failure (mean age 64 +/- 12 years, 73% male) were divided into four groups according to their PP (40, 40-49, 50-59, andor = 60 mmHg), and followed prospectively.After 1 year, 995 patients (11.5%) died. Both the mean arterial pressure and systolic blood pressure were found to be inversely associated with mortality at univariate and multivariate analyses. An inverse univariate relation was observed between PP and all-cause mortality. An excess mortality risk in the lowest PP group (odds ratio 1.40, 95% confidence interval 1.09-1.79 vs the highest PP group) was confirmed in a multivariate analysis which took into account the effect of several other variables, including mean arterial pressure. Similar findings were obtained for cardiovascular mortality. When we replaced systolic blood pressure with mean arterial pressure in the model, PP did not retain its independent prognostic role, possibly because of the high co-linearity between these two variables (r = 0.87).For any given level of mean arterial pressure, a low PP is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular death in patients with heart failure. The association may be partly related to the strong influence of low systolic blood pressure on mortality. Different pathophysiological mechanisms may underlie the opposite prognostic significance of PP in hypertension and heart failure.

Abstract

A mathematical model describing the evolution of aerobic and anaerobic respiration of Golden Delicious apples stored in refrigerated and controlled atmosphere, as a function of temperature, PO2 and PCO2 is presented and discussed. This paper reports: the hypothesis utilised to formulate the model; the kinetic equations used; the identification of the best values to be assigned to the functional parameters of the mathematical equations introduced; the model validation carried out by using an independent experimental data set. Despite the low number of functional parameters utilised, this model appears able to suitably describe the evolution of aerobic respiration and alcoholic fermentation rates of Golden Delicious apples stored at different temperatures, PO2 and PCO2. Abstract

The maceration of the solid parts (dregs) of grapes is a fundamental step of wine-making not only for the production of high quality red wines but also of structured white wines characterized by a high content of aromatic compounds. A mathematical model able to describe the time evolution of the phenolic fractions during grape maceration is reported and discussed. While the accumulation of total phenols and catechins in the must/wine during grape maceration can be described by the mass transfer equation introduced by Fick to evaluate the diffusion occurring between two heterogeneous phases, a more complex mathematical approach is introduced to determine the time evolution of anthocyanins. The extraction rate of different phenolic compounds, does not seem to vary significantly with the kind of fermentor or the wine-making technology used, but both the yield and chemical composition of the extracts appear to be significantly affected by extraction time. Abstract

The project of Sant'Anna School, in line with the Italian legislation on limiting waste and promoting the redistribution of surpluses and unused goods, aimed to study the potential healthy value of residues obtained from the transformation of fruit and vegetable products that represent a cost, as they must be handled, stored and disposed according to stringent actual regulations. Two "model" species (potato and apple) were considered to test the possibility of using industrial processing waste for food applications. The extracts, obtained with "green" methods from potato and apple peels, were evaluated as natural antioxidants in the preparation of minimally processed freshcut apple. Results suggest the possibility to use these novel byproduct extracts as valuable alternative treatments to traditional chemical additives employed for minimally processed apples. Despite recent progress and the publishing of several clinical guidelines on the management of advanced basal cell carcinoma, there is still no comprehensive set of clinical guidelines addressing the complexity inherent to the use of Hedgehog pathway inhibitors in the treatment of advanced basal cell carcinoma in real-world clinical practice. To develop practical and valuable tools that help specialists improve the clinical management of these patients, we sought the opinion of expert physicians with extensive knowledge and experience in the treatment of advanced basal cell carcinoma.

Abstract

This contribution focuses on the presence and function of prose rubrics in fifteenth and sixteenth-century lyric collections. On the one hand, this understudied paratextual component can be analysed as a specific form of self-commentary; on the other, it offers a privileged perspective on the relationship between the narrative and the lyric in early modern poetry. The chapter is arranged into three sections, each moving from a pivotal book in the Italian lyric tradition (Dante’s Vita Nova, Petrarch’s Rerum Vulgarium Fragmenta, and Pietro Bembo’s famous 1501 edition of the latter work), and combines a historical-genealogical approach with a number of theoretical questions raised by the interaction of prose captions and verse in a lyric and self-exegetical context. Throughout the chapter, the issue of lyric ‘narrativity’ is examined both at the level of individual texts and at the macrotextual level.

Abstract

Mg-Ti nanostructured samples with different Ti contents were prepared via compaction of nanoparticles grown by inert gas condensation with independent Mg and Ti vapour sources. The growth set-up offered the option to perform in situ hydrogen absorption before compaction. Structural and morphological characterisation was carried out by X-ray diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy and electron microscopy. The formation of an extended metastable solid solution of Ti in hcp Mg was detected up to 15 at% Ti in the as-grown nanoparticles, while after in situ hydrogen absorption, phase separation between MgH2 and TiH2 was observed. At a Ti content of 22 at%, a metastable Mg-Ti-H fcc phase was observed after in situ hydrogen absorption. The co-evaporation of Mg and Ti inhibited nanoparticle coalescence and crystallite growth in comparison with the evaporation of Mg only. In situ hydrogen absorption was beneficial to subsequent hydrogen behaviour, studied by high pressure differential scanning calorimetry and isothermal kinetics. A transformed fraction of 90% was reached within 100 s at 300 degrees C during both hydrogen absorption and desorption. The enthalpy of hydride formation was not observed to differ from bulk MgH2.
