Solid poly(4,4′-oxydiphenylenepyromellitamic acid) was treated in benzene by a mixture of pyridine and acetic and/or trifluoroacetic anhydride. The kinetics of transformation of polyamic acid into a copolymer containing imide and isoimide rings was studied by IR spectroscopy. Imide groups are predominantly formed in the presence of acetic anhydride whereas isoimide structures are favoured in the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride. The effects of a different content of pyridine and of mixtures consisting of acetic and trifluoroacetic anhydride in the reaction medium on the composition of the resulting copolymers was investigated. The experimental results have been explained using quantum chemical calculations of reaction pathways in the cyclization of amic acids. The preferred formation of either imide or isoimide rings has been explained by the ability of different reaction media to favour deprotonation of the amide group or protonation of carboxyls in polyamic acids.

Methods were developed for determining molecular weight distribution (MWD) of polyamic acids obtained from p-phenylenediamine and 3,3′,4,4′-diphenyloxide tetracarboxylic dianhydride by exclusion liquid chromatography. The methods involve chromatographic analysis using a system of columns with a linear range of separation for polystyrenes of 103–106 MW in a N,N-dimethylformamide/THF eluent and LiBr and H3PO4 additives, 0·03 m each, which suppress distortion of resulting MWDs, and determination of the calibration dependence of V = f(logM) for polydispersed samples according to intrinsic viscosities, average molecular weights using universal calibration. Liquid chromatography enables MWD of polyamic acids synthesized in solvents different from the eluent to be analysed.

The method of liquid chromatography has given the mean molecular characteristics of solutions of poly-(4,4′-oxydiphenylene pyromellitamic acid in the MM interval 2×104−2·25 × 105. An analytical expression has been obtained relating the constants of the Mark-Kuhn-Houwinck equation to such macromolecular parameters as the length of the Kuhn statistical segment, the mass of the monomer unit and the length of its projection on the direction of the extended trans-chain.

Measurements have been made of the intrinsic viscosity and weight average molecular weight (light scattering) of unprecipitated specimens of poly-(4,4′-oxydiphenylene) pyromellitimido-acid in amide-type solvents. On the basis of these data, the parameters in the Mark-Kuhn-Houwink equation have been calculated. A comparative assessment has been made of the thermodynamic quality of the solvents used and an interconnection between thermodynamic quality and the molecular mass of the specimens synthetized has been noted. In all the solvents, the unperturbed dimensions of the macromolecular coil is 1·1±0·1 A and the size of the Kuhn segment is 30±5 A.

A study was made of the thermal cyclization (imidization) of functional derivatives of poly-(4-4′-hydroxyphenylene)pyromellitamic acid, namely substituted ammonium salts of the latter, the ethyl and phenyl esters, N-methyl- and N-phenylamides, and also polyisoimide. The functional derivatives were prepared by reactions in the poly(amido acid) chains. The rate constants and activation energies were calculated for imidization. Changes occurring in the deformation-strength properties of the polymers during heat treatment were determined. A relationship between reaction rates and the chemical structure of the derivatives was found as well as evidence to show that the level of the properties of the obtained polyimides is dependent on the nature of the low molecular products formed in the cyclization processes.

Light scattering and viscometry were used to examine properties of solutions of poly-(4,4′-hydroxydiphenylene)pyromellitic amido-acid (PAA PM) and methyl and ethyl esters in DMAA and DMF. Esters were obtained by reactions in PAA PM chains. It was shown that storing PAA PM solutions and esters obtained by reactions in PAA chains, the weight average molecular weight of polymers is reduced, which is evidence of the validity of the degradation mechanism of ageing PAA in solutions. For PAA PM in DMAA and mixture of DMAA: dioxane (1:2·5) equations were derived which relate intrinsic viscosity with molecularly weight. Using the Stockmayer-Fixman extrapolation method for PAA PM unperturbed dimensions of molecular spheres were determined in solution. From the value of (h02/M)13 and the steric factor σ it was concluded that there is practically no rotation around ester oxygen bridges.

The thermal imidization of complexes of benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid diester with diamines is greatly different from the thermal imidization of the corresponding mechanical mixtures. Preliminary complexation gives a considerably greater degree of completion of the imidization. It is concluded that diffusion processes play a decisive role in the solid-phase thermal imidization of the complexes. On the basis of similar values of the free energy of activation at identical temperatures for complexes with different diamines, it is concluded that the reactivity of the functional groups has little influence on the kinetics of solid-phase imidization of the complex. Alternative schemes are proposed for the formation of polyimides from the complexes, leading to an intermediate mixed-unit prepolymer with amido acid, amido ester, and imide units in the chain.

The main features of the synthesis and properties of polyimides (PI) based on diamines which are the analogues of 4,4-bis-(aminophenoxy)diphenylsulphone have been studied. A feature of the chemical structure is a 4,4-diphenyl sulphone fragment linked to the aminophenoxy groups which contain an amino-radical group in 3- or 4-position relative to the oxygen atom. The efficiency of the phenoxy-radical insertion and the resulting reactivity increase of the amino groups has been assessed from the rate constants of the acylation with the 4,4,3,3-benzophenonetetracarboxylic acid dianhydride. The softening temperature and the deformation-strength characteristics have been used to discover what masking effect the diphenylsulphone (DPS) fragment has on the properties of polymers produced by using various tetracarboxylic acids. The relevant properties of the mono- and poly-compounds containing a 4,4-diphenyl oxide fragment linked with phenoxy groups have been examined for the purpose of comparisons.

The method of turbidity spectra has been used to determine the micron-size heterogeneities present in the prepolymer solutions used to synthesize polyimides (poly-(4,4-hydroxydiphenylene) pyromellitamides) produced by polycondensing the respective monomers in dimethyl fornamide. The proportion by volume of the heterogeneities present in the reaction solutions has been established to consist of admixtures entering with the monomers, and of polymer particles forming by secondary reactions during the polycondensation. The numbers of the heterogeneities per unit of volume and their average radius depend on the varying polycondensation conditions. The most significant and potential source of the heterogeneities is assumed to be the heterogenous distribution of the solid monomer in the space (bulk) of the reaction mixture.

The equilibrium flexibility of polyamic acids has been investigated by means of light scattering and viscometry methods. The number, position and chemical structure of “hinge” groups in the studied polymers were varied, as well as the number of phenylene rings in the anhydride and amine parts of the chains. Experiments were conducted in thermodynamically good solvents, and in ideal ones. The relative unperturbed dimensions of the coils hθ2/M)12 were determined for all the studied polyamic acids (seven structures). It was found that the steric factor σ = (hθ2/hf2) approximates to unity for all these structures. Calculation of hf2 was carried out with an assumption that there is free rotation about ether bonds, and meta-addition of amide groups in the chain. Mark-Kuhn-Houwink equations were derived, relating the intrinsic viscosity [η] to the molecular weight Mw of the polyamic acids.

A method of IR analysis was used in a kinetic study of reactions of dianhydrides of 1,3-bis-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene and 3,3′,4,4′-tetracarboxybenzophenone with aniline and its p-methyl-, p-phenoxy-, p-bromo-, p-nitro derivatives and tetranuclear bridge-containing diamines in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMAA) at 298 K. A PMR study was made of the kinetics of cyclization of o-carboxyamides prepared from the dianhydride of 1,3-bis(3,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene and the above-mentioned diamines in DMAA solution at 433 K. The effect of a substituent in the nucleophile (amine) on rates of acylation with tetracarboxylic dianhydrides is described by a Hammett equation with p=−3·6 and −3·4 respectively. The rate of cyclization is only slightly depend on the initial amine structure. The p value for cyclization of the model o-carboxyanilides is equal to −0·2. In the case of the studied flexible-chain polymers the rates of formation and cyclization of polyamic acids depend on factors relating to the electronic structure of the reacting functional groups.

Molecular characteristics and rheological behaviour of solutions of poly(4,4′-oxydiphenyl)pyromellitamic acid in a mixture of DMFA (thermodynamically good solvent) with toluene (precipitant) were studied, at various solvent compositions up to that corresponding to a θ-solvent. It was shown that when the initial solutions are diluted by the precipitant, the viscosity of the solutions is independent of the thermodynamic quality of the solvent, and their intrinsic viscosity consequently decreases. A comparison of the rheological behaviour of polyamic acids synthesized in solvents of various thermodynamic quality has shown that the molecular mass of the formed polymer is the higher, the poorer the quality of the solvent.

The complete decoding of the 13C-NMR spectra of poly-(acid)amides (PAA) produced by polycondensing some tetracarboxylic acid dianhydrides, i.e. those of pyromellitic, 3,4,3′,4′-diphenyloxy, 3, 4,3′, 4′-benzophenone, and 3,4,3′,4′-diphenyl, with p-phenylenediamine or benzidine, gave the proportions of the m- and p-isomeric chain units present in the PAA. The composition was found to be independent of the diamine present, but dependent on the dianhydride component. A correlation exists between the experimentally determined isomer proportions and the calculated quantum chemical reactivity indices.

The mechanism of cyclization has been studied by the MINDO quantum-chemical method in neutral and ionic forms of model compounds: maleamic and phthalamic acids as well as para-substituted N-phenylmaleamic acids. The activation energy of cyclization is shown to be higher in the neutral than in the ionic forms of all amic acids investigated. Cyclization of amic acids deprotonated in the amide group leads primarily to imides, while those protonated in the carboxyl group yield mostly isoimides. Formation of a mixed anhydride, which precedes the cyclization in the case of amic acids in their ionic form, facilitates not only the cyclization itself, but also the decomposition of cyclic tetrahedral intermediates to the final cyclization product. The results show that thermal imidization involves the neutral while chemical imidization the ionic form of the amic acid.

The kinetics of the interaction of dianhydrides of tetracarboxylic acids with aromatic diamines were investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy. It is shown that the process is described by an equation for second order reactions, and that the logarithm of the rate constant is a linear function of the pKa value of the diamine. A relationship was found between the chemical structure of the dianhydrides and their acylating capacity.

The subsonic flow of an ideal compressible gas around the rear end of a semiinfinite flat plate in a pipe is considered. The flow pattern is similar to that assumed by Efros [1, 2] with a return stream for the cavitational flows. Fal'kovich's method [3] is used to solve the problem and this makes it possible to obtain the solution to the problems of the gas streams at several typical velocities. The method is a generalization of that of Chaplygin [4] for flow problems at one typical velocity.

1. In manufacturing cold-rolled electrical sheet with heat resistant coatings it is advisable to improve the surface finish before application of the coating, since it has a considerable effect on the microrelief after high-temperature annealing. 2. With magnesia coatings applied before high-temperature annealing the microrelief depends on the original finish, although the grade of the finish remains unchanged. A phosphate coating has no substantial effect on the microrelief. 3. The unevenness of the microrelief on commercial cold-rolled electrical sheet with magnesia and phosphate coatings is somewhat higher than that for “Karlit” coatings.

1. The addition of methylamine to N,2-dimethylmaleimide can take two courses: a) with opening of the imide ring and preservation of the double bond, and b) with opening of the double bond with preservation of the imide ring. The course taken is determined by the moistness of the medium: for reaction to take the second course it is necessary for the reaction medium to be completely dry. 2. N,2-Dimethyl-2-(methylamino)succinimide and its hydrcchloride, and also N,N′,2-trimethyl-2-(methylamino)succinamide, were prepared and characterized.

The surface structure of thin films based on poly[4,4′-bis(4″-N-phenoxy)diphenyl]amic acid of 1,3-bis(3′,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene and the product of its thermal imidization—a semicrystalline polyimide—poly[4,4′-bis(4″-N-phenoxy)diphenyl]imide of 1,3-bis(3′,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene—at various stges of thermal imidization and after melting and subsequent annealing has been studied by methods of transmission, scanning electron, and atomic force microscopies. The topological structure of the film surface has been described in terms of the discrete cluster model. Under heating to 200 and 280°C, a continuous network of the infinite cluster appears; subsequent annealing leads to disintegration of the network to discrete fragments that practically correspond to clusters in the starting poly(amic acid) film. The polyimide film heated to 280°C crystallizes in the form of needle crystals stable to the argon plasma. The surface morphology of polyimide films recrystallized from melt is of the spherulite character.

By combining the results obtained from an electron diffraction tilting series with solid state NMR and powder X-ray diffraction, it was possible to determine the unit cell parameters and space group of BPABC crystals grown from DMAA solution both before and after irradiation. Subsequently semi-empirical quantum mechanical and packing energy calculations led to a model structure which agreed well with all the electron diffraction data and thus provided insight into the cross-linking mechanism. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

A study is made of unidirectional carbon-fiber-reinforced composites with both thermosetting and thermoplastic matrices. Experimental data on acoustic emission for unidirectional fiber composites with a crack is presented in the form of an exponential dependence of the number of AE signals on the stress-intensity factor. The increase in the size of the damage zone across the layers of the composite turns out to be linearly dependent on loading time (and, thus, on Klc), in contrast to the usual quadratic dependence along the layers.

- Abstract
A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ_{c}^{+}h^{-}(h=π,K), followed by Λ_{c}^{+}→Λh^{+} with Λ→pπ^{-} or Λ_{c}^{+}→pK_{S}^{0} decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1} collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity (CP) asymmetries are measured, with no significant CP violation observed. For the first time, the Λ_{b}^{0}→Λ_{c}^{+}h^{-} decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters α, β, and γ are obtained for Λ_{c}^{+} decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon Λ decay is provided. The results deepen our understanding of weak decay dynamics in baryon decays.

- Abstract
A search for violation of the charge-parity (CP) symmetry in the D^{+}→K^{-}K^{+}π^{+} decay is presented, with proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb^{-1}, collected at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the LHCb detector. A novel model-independent technique is used to compare the D^{+} and D^{-} phase-space distributions, with instrumental asymmetries subtracted using the D_{s}^{+}→K^{-}K^{+}π^{+} decay as a control channel. The p value for the hypothesis of CP conservation is 8.1%. The CP asymmetry observables A_{CP|S}^{ϕπ^{+}}=(0.95±0.43_{stat}±0.26_{syst})×10^{-3} and A_{CP|S}^{K[over ¯]^{*0}K^{+}}=(-0.26±0.56_{stat}±0.18_{syst})×10^{-3} are also measured. These results show no evidence of CP violation and represent the most sensitive search performed through the phase space of a multibody decay.

- Abstract
A study of resonant structures in B^{+}→D^{*+}D^{-}K^{+} and B^{+}→D^{*-}D^{+}K^{+} decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of sqrt[s]=7, 8, and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb^{-1}. A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to D^{*-}D^{+} and D^{*+}D^{-} states linked by C parity. This procedure allows the C parities of resonances in the D^{*±}D^{∓} mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium or charmoniumlike states are observed decaying into D^{*±}D^{∓}: η_{c}(3945), h_{c}(4000), χ_{c1}(4010), and h_{c}(4300), with quantum numbers J^{PC} equal to 0^{-+}, 1^{+-}, 1^{++}, and 1^{+-}, respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the T_{c[over ¯]s[over ¯]0}^{*}(2870)^{0} and T_{c[over ¯]s[over ¯]1}^{*}(2900)^{0} resonances in the D^{-}K^{+} mass spectrum, already observed in the B^{+}→D^{+}D^{-}K^{+} decay, is confirmed in a different production channel.
