Abstract: International audience; The Paleogene records the most prominent global climate change of the Cenozoic Era with a shift from a greenhouse to an icehouse world. Several transient hyperthermal events punctuated this long-term evolution. The most pronounced and the best known of these is the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM-56 Ma). This event is associated with global warming, a worldwide perturbation of the carbon cycle, and significant biotic changes. The PETM is primarily recorded by a sharp negative carbon isotope excursion (NCIE) in both carbonates and organic matter of sedimentary successions. The source of the 13C-depleted carbon for the NCIE and whether it was released in one or numerous events is still debated. Several carbon sources have been proposed to explain the PETM-NCIE and the mechanisms that triggered this abrupt climate upheaval. These include, among others, the magmatic and thermogenic release of carbon associated with the emplacement of Large Igneous Provinces (LIP). One proxy for tracking past volcanic emissions in the geological record and testing hypothetical links between volcanism and hyperthermals is the use of mercury (Hg) anomalies found in marine and continental sedimentary successions. Here, we present new high-resolution mercury and stable isotopic records from a continental-marine transect in Pyrenean peripheral basins during the PETM. Compared to deeper marine settings, the significant sedimentation rate that characterizes these high-accommodation and high sediment-supply environments allows the preservation of expanded successions, providing reliable information about the fluctuations of Hg concentration in deposits across the PETM. Our data reveal two large negative carbon excursions across the studied successions. Based on biostratigraphy and the similarity of shape and amplitude of the isotopic excursions with global records, we interpret the largest NCIE as the PETM. This main excursion is preceded by another that we interpret as the Pre-Onset Excursion (POE), found in other profiles worldwide. We find that the POE and the PETM are, in our studied sections, systematically associated with significant Hg anomalies regardless of the depositional environment. These results suggest that large pulses of volcanism, possibly related to the North Atlantic Igneous Province's emplacement, contributed to the onset and possibly also to the long duration of the PETM. Furthermore, the record of higher Hg anomalies in nearshore than offshore settings suggests a massive collapse of terrestrial ecosystems linked to volcanism-driven environmental change triggered significant Hg loading in shallow marine ecosystems. If this is correct, these findings confirm the primary role of the solid Earth in determining past terrestrial climates.

Abstract: International audience; When indexing large collections of short-read sequencing data, a common operation that has now been implemented in several tools (Sequence Bloom Trees and variants, BIGSI,.) is to construct a collection of Bloom filters, one per sample. Each Bloom filter is used to represent a set of k-mers which approximates the desired set of all the non-erroneous k-mers present in the sample. However, this approximation is imperfect, especially in the case of metagenomics data. Erroneous but abundant k-mers are wrongly included, and non-erroneous but low-abundant ones are wrongly discarded. We propose kmtricks, a novel approach for generating Bloom filters from terabase-sized collections of sequencing data. Our main contributions are 1/ an efficient method for jointly counting k-mers across multiple samples, including a streamlined Bloom filter construction by directly counting, partitioning and sorting hashes instead of k-mers, which is approximately four times faster than state-of-the-art tools; 2/ a novel technique that takes advantage of joint counting to preserve low-abundant k-mers present in several samples, improving the recovery of non-erroneous k-mers. Our experiments highlight that this technique preserves around 8x more k-mers than the usual yet crude filtering of low-abundance k-mers in a large metagenomics dataset.

Abstract: This article is on reliable broadcast in asynchronous signature-free $n$-process message-passing systems in which up to $t_b$ processes are Byzantine and where, at the network level, for each message broadcast by a correct process, an adversary can prevent up to $t_m$ processes from receiving it (the integer $t_m$ defines the power of the message adversary). So, differently from previous works, this article considers that not only computing entities can be faulty (Byzantine processes), but also that the network can lose messages. To this end, the article first introduces a new basic communication abstraction denoted $k\ell$-cast and studies its properties in the previous bi-dimensional adversary context. Then, the article deconstructs existing Byzantine-tolerant asynchronous broadcast algorithms and, with the help of the $k\ell$-cast communication abstraction, reconstructs versions of them that tolerate both Byzantine processes and message adversaries. Interestingly, some of these reconstructed algorithms are also more efficient than the Byzantine-tolerant-only algorithms from which they originate. The article also shows that the condition $n>3t_b+2t_m$ is necessary and sufficient (with signatures) to design such reliable broadcast algorithms.

Abstract: In current sensor-based monitoring solutions, each application involves a customized deployment and requires significant configuration efforts to adapt to changes in the sensor field. This becomes particularly problematic for massive deployments of battery-powered monitoring sensors.In this paper, we propose a generic solution for sensor emission scheduling to ensure overall regular sensor data emissions over time (at a rate chosen by the user), with limited management costs incurred by sensors' arrivals and departure. Our objectives include monitoring quality--which we quantify through a ``diversity'' metric encompassing that information value depletes with time--and some management cost--quantified by the number of orders sent to sensors.Modeling arrivals and departures as random processes, we compute those performance metrics as functions of the overall data reception period selected, and evaluate them against an alternative scheduling method existing in the literature. We show that our solution provides similar monitoring quality (diversity), but with significantly reduced management costs, making it better suited for Massive IoT contexts.

Abstract: International audience; Channel charting is an unsupervised learning method that aims at mapping wireless channels to a so-called chart, preserving as much as possible spatial neighborhoods. In this paper, a model-based deep learning approach to this problem is proposed. It builds on a physically motivated distance measure to structure and initialize a neural network that is subsequently trained using a triplet loss function. The proposed structure exhibits a low number of parameters and clever initialization leads to fast training. These two features make the proposed approach amenable to on-the-fly channel charting. The method is empirically assessed on realistic synthetic channels, yielding encouraging results.

Abstract: In current monitoring solutions, each application involves a customed deployment and requires significant configuration efforts to adapt to changes in the sensor field. In contrast, here we consider a massive deployment of batterypowered sensors temporarily intervening in the monitoring. In this paper, we propose a generic general-purpose monitoring solution that is not tied to the deployment of physical devices. We develop a method that allows to receive a homogeneous amount of information per unit of time, since it is a simple and very efficient way to monitor a physical quantity that varies in time. The proposed solution limits the management costs when the sensor field is changing. Considering that the sensors enter and exit following random processes, we develop analytical results linking the function parameters-the average amount of information per unit of time-and the monitoring quality metrics-diversity, management cost. Moreover, by comparing this solution to the existing literature, we show that this solution is the most suitable for the objectives that can be considered in the context of Massive IoT.

Abstract: International audience; A large software system exists in different forms, as different variants targeting different business needs and users. This kind of systems is provided as a set of "independent" products and not as a "single-whole". Developers use ad-hoc mechanisms to manage variability. We defend a vision of software development where we consider an SPL architecture starting from which the architecture of each variant can be derived before its implementation. Indeed, each derived variant can have its own life. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for Software Architecture Product Line (SAPL) Engineering. It consists of, i) a generic process for recovering an SAPL model which is a product line of "software architectures" from large-sized variants. ii) a forward-engineering process that uses the recovered SAPL to derive new customized software architecture variants. The approach is firstly experimented on thirteen Eclipse variants to create a new SAPL. Then, an intensive evaluation is conducted using an existing benchmark which is also based on Eclipse IDE. Our results showed that we can accurately reconstruct such an SAPL and derive effectively pertinent variants. Our study provides insights that recovering SAPL and then deriving software architectures offers good documentation to understand the software before changing it.

Abstract: International audience; Visual servoing (VS) is a common way in robotics to control a robot motion using information acquired by a camera. This approach requires to extract visual information from the image to design the control law. The resulting servo loop is built in order to minimize an error expressed in the image space. We consider a direct visual servoing (DVS) from whole images. We propose a new framework to perform VS in the latent space learned by a convolutional autoencoder. We show that this latent space avoids explicit feature extraction and tracking issues and provides a good representation, smoothing the cost function of the VS process. Besides, our experiments show that this unsupervised learning approach allows us to obtain, without labelling cost, an accurate end-positioning, often on par with the best DVS methods in terms of accuracy but with a larger convergence area.

Abstract: International audience; In order to improve locality aspects, new Cloud-related architectures such as Edge Computing have been proposed. Despite the growing popularity of these new architectures, their energy consumption has not been well investigated yet. To move forward on such a critical question, we first introduce a taxonomy of different Cloud-related architectures. From this taxonomy, we then present an energy model to evaluate their consumption. Unlike previous proposals, our model comprises the full energy consumption of the computing facilities, including cooling systems, and the energy consumption of network devices linking end users to Cloud resources. Finally, we instantiate our model on different Cloud-related architectures, ranging from fully centralized to completely distributed ones, and compare their energy consumption. The results show that a completely distributed architecture, because of not using intra-data center network and large-size cooling systems, consumes between 14% and 25% less energy than fully centralized and partly distributed architectures respectively. To the best of our knowledge, our work is the first one to propose a model that enables researchers to analyze and compare energy consumption of different Cloud-related architectures.

Abstract: International audience; Bright NIR phosphorescence from octahedral molybdenum clusters has been known since the 1980s. However, their behavior toward NIR excitation has never been investigated. Here we report their abilities to emit NIR light and produce singlet oxygen upon two-photon absorption. This behavior is observed in solution, in the solid state, and when clusters are embedded homogeneously in a poly(dimethylsiloxane) matrix. Such discoveries open new perspectives in several fields like optoelectronics, photodynamic therapy, or bioimaging.

Abstract: Recent research has focused on assessing either event- or time-based prospective memory (PM) using laboratory tasks. Yet, the findings pertaining to PM performance on laboratory tasks are often inconsistent with the findings on corresponding naturalistic experiments. Ecologically valid neuropsychological tasks resemble the complexity and cognitive demands of everyday tasks, offer an adequate level of experimental control, and allow a generalisation of the findings to everyday performance. The Virtual Reality Everyday Assessment Lab (VR-EAL), an immersive virtual reality neuropsychological battery with enhanced ecological validity, was implemented to comprehensively assess everyday PM (i.e., focal and non-focal event-based, and time-based). The effects of the length of delay between encoding and initiating the PM intention and the type of PM task on everyday PM performance were examined. The results revealed that everyday PM performance was affected by the length of delay rather than the type of PM task. The effect of the length of delay differentially affected performance on the focal, non-focal, and time-based tasks and was proportional to the PM cue focality (i.e., semantic relationship with the intended action). Abstract: International audience; In deep-sea slope areas, canyons provide an ideal space to preserve sediments and provide a window to explore the deepwater deposition process, such as turbidity flow and contourite currents. We have evaluated results of the study of the northern continental slope of the South China Sea characterized by the presence of mostly straight canyons. After evaluating core samples and interpreting the corresponding seismic data, we static the sedimentary parameter and identified two types of canyons with different migrating trajectories: "convex downward curve-shaped" trajectories and "convex upward curve-shaped" trajectories. The convex downward curve-shaped canyon trajectory is distinguished by a lower layer of coarse-grained sediment and an upper layer of fine-grained sediment, whereas the convex upward curve-shaped canyon trajectory features a lower layer of fine-grained sediment and an upper layer of coarse-grained sediment. Combining the grain size of the core sample and the scale of the sedimentary structure, we restore the turbidity flow rates and the corresponding turbidity flow behaviors. Coarse-grained turbidity flows are characterized by lower vertical erosion rates and higher lateral abrasion rates, whereas fine-grained turbidity flows exhibit the opposite characteristics. Thus, the convex downward curve-shaped migration trajectory is mainly formed by coarse-grained turbidity flow erosion in the first stage (the late migration stage) and fine-grained turbidity flow deposition in the second stage (the vertical aggradation stage). In contrast, the convex upward curve-shaped trajectory forms through the opposite pattern of sedimentary evolution.

Abstract: International audience; Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) usually afflicts individuals in their maturity after a protracted liver disease. Contrasting with this pattern, the age structure of HCC in Andean people displays a bimodal distribution with half of the patients developing HCC in adolescence and early adulthood. To deepen our understanding of the molecular determinants of the disease in this population, we conducted an integrative analysis of gene expression and DNA methylation in HCC developed by 74 Peruvian patients, including 39 adolescents and young adults. While genome-wide hypomethylation is considered as a paradigm in human HCCs, our analysis revealed that Peruvian tumors are associated with a global DNA hypermethylation. Moreover, pathway enrichment analysis of transcriptome data characterized an original combination of signatures. Peruvian HCC forgoes canonical activations of IGF2, Notch, Ras/MAPK, and TGF-β signals to depend instead on Hippo/YAP1, MYC, and Wnt/β-catenin pathways. These signatures delineate a homogeneous subtype of liver tumors at the interface of the proliferative and non-proliferative classes of HCCs. Remarkably, the development of this HCC subtype occurs in patients with one of the four Native American mitochondrial haplogroups A-D. Finally, integrative characterization revealed that Peruvian HCC is apparently controlled by the PRC2 complex that mediates cell reprogramming with massive DNA methylation modulating gene expression and pinpointed retinoid signaling as a potential target for epigenetic therapy.

Abstract: International audience; With the development of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) and ultra HVDC, a growing number of high voltage film filter capacitors have been installed for harmonic suppression. But the capacitors generate severe audible noise in the converters, which has become more and more serious. Then it is important to imitate the practical working situation of capacitors for the research of noise characteristics to improve the capacitive performance in lab. In this paper, a FFT-based harmonic current control method is proposed for audible noise analysis of AC filter capacitor. Firstly, mathematical model of the Harmonic Current Injection System (HCIS) is built based on MATLAB. Then a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) harmonics detection method is analyzed and used to detect the amplitude and phase of each harmonic considering a number of harmonic currents flowing through AC filter capacitors. Since the amplitude and phase spectrum of capacitor current are obtained, the Proportional Integral (PI) regulator is applied to adjust the specified harmonic amplitude to achieve zero-error control. Then accurate harmonic current can be injected to the tested capacitor and it will help to acquire the noise characteristics of the tested plant. At last, the simulation and experimental results validate the proposed strategy. © The Author(s) 2021.

Abstract: Resume Introduction L’endocardite de Libman-Sacks est une complication rare du syndrome des antiphospholipides. L’anticoagulation par anti-vitamine K est le traitement de reference, parfois associee a une chirurgie. Dans les dernieres recommandations EULAR, l’utilisation des anticoagulants oraux directs est deconseillee pour la prise en charge du syndrome des antiphospholipides, en particulier en cas de profil a haut risque. Observation Nous rapportons le cas d’une patiente de 63 ans atteinte de sclerose en plaque et d’un syndrome des antiphospholipides ayant presente une endocardite mitrale de Libman-Sacks compliquee d’accidents vasculaires ischemiques apres deux annees d’apixaban. La reintroduction de tinzaparine puis de warfarine au long cours et deux mois d’hydroxychloroquine ont permis une amelioration des lesions valvulaires. Conclusion A notre connaissance, il s’agit du premier cas d’endocardite de Libman-Sacks survenue sous apixaban pour le traitement d’un syndrome des antiphospholipides. Cette atteinte grave conforte l’idee que les anticoagulants oraux directs ne sont pas a utiliser dans la prevention des evenements thrombotiques au cours du syndrome des antiphospholipides.

Abstract: People’s beliefs about uncertain events play a pivotal role in real-world decisions. Examples include entrepreneurs who have to assess the chance that their business activities will be successful, patients who have to decide on a risky treatment, and policy makers who have to assess the risks of climate change. Existing methods to measure beliefs are complex and make restrictive assumptions that limit their use in assisting and understanding everyday decision-making. In “Measuring Beliefs under Ambiguity,” Mohammed Abdelloui, Han Bleichrodt, Emmanuel Kemel, and Olivier l’Haridon propose a simple method to measure beliefs that is valid under general assumptions and that requires only three measurements. The ease of the method makes it straightforward to use in practice. An experiment of expected temperatures shows that the beliefs elicited by the method are well calibrated and similar to those elicited by more complex and time-consuming methods. This study provides an easy tool to help both individuals and policy makers make better decisions.

Abstract: International audience; Objective: To characterize the current profile of gonococcal infections in France, and to describe their management. Patients and method: A population-based retrospective study of all gonococcal infections documented by PCR in two French departments (Île-et-Vilaine, Morbihan), in 2014–2016. Cases were identified through hospital databases and the Rénago sentinel network. Results: We enrolled 245 patients (96 females, 149 males), with a median age of 25 years [interquartile range, 21–33]. The incidence rate was estimated at 4.54 per 100,000 inhabitants-year. Cases were diagnosed mostly by a general practitioner (n = 122, 49.8%) or a gynecologist (n = 45, 18.4%). The main clinical presentations included urethritis (n = 59), pelvic inflammatory disease (n = 40), cervicitis (n = 12), and anorectitis (n = 11). The main coinfections were Chlamydia trachomatis (n = 40) and HIV (n = 8). Ceftriaxone MIC was ≤ 0.12 mg/L in 146/147 patients with positive culture. Treatment was appropriate in 52/74 (70.2%) patients with available data. Conclusions: In France, general practitioners are at the front line in management of gonococcal infections. © 2020 Elsevier Masson SAS

Abstract: International audience; Objective - The potentialities of improving the penetration of millimeter waves for breast cancer imaging are here explored. Methods - A field focusing technique based on a convex optimization method is proposed, capable of increasing the field level inside a breast-emulating stratification. Results - The theoretical results are numerically validated via the design and simulation of two circularly polarized antennas. The experimental validation of the designed antennas, using tissue-mimicking phantoms, is provided, being in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Conclusion - The possibility of focusing, within a lossy medium, the electromagnetic power at millimeter-wave frequencies is demonstrated. Significance - Field focusing can be a key for using millimeter waves for breast cancer detection.

Abstract: International audience; This article looks at the collaboration relations of CEOs during different phases of the integration process into a network by using various proximity dimensions. Based on the life narratives of 21 CEO members belonging to a regional network, our study underlines that three integration phases exist, within which different proximity forms are mobilised. Whereas, institutional, personal and social proximities are significant during the entry phase, temporary geographical and cognitive proximities appear to be essential for building collaboration. Moreover, if social and personal dimensions play essential roles in starting collaborations, we note that social proximity remains less decisive for joint collaborative projects. These results enrich recent debates about the dimensions of proximity. They open lines of thinking about ways to encourage the integration of new members.

Abstract: International audience; Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is the second primary hepatic malignancy after hepatocellular carcinoma. CCA is characterized by its aggressiveness and poor prognosis associated with limited therapeutic options. Thus, a better understanding of molecular pathogenesis of CCA together with the identification of robust biomarkers and therapeutic targets is still necessary to improve the management of patients with CCA. In this review, we discuss the role of long non coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in CCA onset and progression. LncRNAs represent a heterogeneous class of RNA molecules with various genomic location and organization acting at both transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Notably, we provide an overview of the functions of lncRNAs in epigenetic modulation and regulation of signaling pathways and cell behaviors leading to tumor progression (e.g. apoptosis, survival, epithelial to mesenchymal transition, migration, invasion, angiogenesis). Moreover, we depict the clinical relevance of lncRNAs as biomarkers and emerging therapeutic targets in CCA.

Abstract: International audience; L’examen parasitologique des selles consiste, le plus souvent, à examiner celles-ci macro- et microscopiquement à la recherche de parasites intestinaux : formes végétatives et kystiques des protozoaires ; œufs, larves et adultes d’helminthes. Le principe du diagnostic fait appel à des techniques analytiques à la portée de tous les laboratoires de biologie médicale. Les renseignements épidémiologiques, cliniques et biologiques doivent être correctement documentés pour une démarche diagnostique optimale. L’examen parasitologique des selles doit être réalisé par un personnel averti, formé à la diagnose des différentes espèces de parasites pouvant infecter l’homme mais il doit également savoir reconnaître les éléments non pathogènes et les faux-parasites.

Abstract: International audience; We develop a method to assess population knowledge about any given topic. We de- fine, and rationalize, types of beliefs that form the ‘knowledge spectrum’. Using a sample of over 7,000 UK residents, we estimate these beliefs with respect to three topics: an animal-based diet, alcohol consumption and immigration. We construct an information- campaign effectiveness index (ICEI) that predicts the success of an information campaign. Information resistance is greatest for animal-based diets, and the ICEI is highest for immigration. We test the predictive power of our ICEI by simulating information campaigns, which produces supportive evidence. Our method can be used by any government or company that wants to explore the success of an information campaign.

Abstract: International audience; Recently, we disclosed the uncatalyzed formation of polyaminoboranes (PABs) from monomeric diisopropylaminoborane ((Pr2N)-Pr-i-BH2) and primary amines (RNH2). Their structure is studied through a detailed multinuclear NMR study and their full spectroscopic characterization is presented revealing that N-alkyl substituted PABs exhibit magnetically non-equivalent methylenic protons in the close vicinity of the BN-backbone. We also performed an in-depth theoretical study of this global chemical process. The mechanism is fully apprehended and the strong influence of the temperature on the outcome of the reaction is unveiled. DFT-calculations clearly show that the formation of the polyaminoboranes (RNH-BH2)(n) results from a kinetically controlled step-growth polymerization reaction that can be globally viewed as a head-to-tail association process of the in situ generated transient monomeric monoalkylamino-borane [RNH-BH2].

Abstract: International audience; The purpose of this article is to examine the impact of the working capital in the borrowing decision of a retailer. The proposed analysis is based on a model with a retailer, a supplier and a bank in a non-cooperative game with price-sensitive demand. The retailer, the supplier and the bank (if concerned) determine, respectively, the ordering quantity, the wholesale price and the interest rate. A Stackelberg game-theoretic approach is employed where the retailer is a follower and either the supplier or the bank is the leader. Some structural properties are first derived from the mathematical models. Then, some numerical simulations show that: (i) a trade credit guarantees the same profits for the retailer and the supplier as in the case where the retailer has sufficient cash holdings, (ii) there exist some situations where the retailer has a better profit with a borrow than with sufficient cash holdings, and (iii) borrowing decision depends on both retailer's and supplier's discount rate and the retailer's cash holdings.

Abstract: While the development of chiral molecules displaying circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has received considerable attention, the corresponding CPL intensity, glum, hardly exceeds 10−2 at the molecular level owing to the difficulty in optimizing the key parameters governing such a luminescence process. To address this challenge, we report here the synthesis and chiroptical properties of a new family of π-helical push–pull systems based on carbo[6]helicene, where the latter acts as either a chiral electron acceptor or a donor unit. This comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation shows that the magnitude and relative orientation of the electric (μe) and magnetic (μm) dipole transition moments can be tuned efficiently with regard to the molecular chiroptical properties, which results in high glum values, i.e. up to 3–4 × 10−2. Our investigations revealed that the optimized mutual orientation of the electric and magnetic dipoles in the excited state is a crucial parameter to achieve intense helicene-mediated exciton coupling, which is a major contributor to the obtained strong CPL. Finally, top-emission CP-OLEDs were fabricated through vapor deposition, which afforded a promising gEl of around 8 × 10−3. These results bring about further molecular design guidelines to reach high CPL intensity and offer new insights into the development of innovative CP-OLED architectures., A CPL intensity of up to 3 × 10−2 is achieved in π-extended 6-helicene derivatives, owing to an intense helicene-mediated exciton coupling. Corresponding top-emission CP-OLEDs afforded a promising gEl of around 8 × 10−3.

Abstract: In this paper, we propose DiFF-RF, an ensemble approach composed of random partitioning binary trees to detect point-wise and collective (as well as contextual) anomalies. Thanks to a distance-based paradigm used at the leaves of the trees, this semi-supervised approach solves a drawback that has been identified in the isolation forest (IF) algorithm. Moreover, taking into account the frequencies of visits in the leaves of the random trees allows to significantly improve the performance of DiFF-RF when considering the presence of collective anomalies. DiFF-RF is fairly easy to train, and excellent performance can be obtained by using a simple semi-supervised procedure to setup the extra hyper-parameter that is introduced. We first evaluate DiFF-RF on a synthetic data set to i) verify that the limitation of the IF algorithm is overcome, ii) demonstrate how collective anomalies are actually detected and iii) to analyze the effect of the meta-parameters it involves. We assess the DiFF-RF algorithm on a large set of datasets from the UCI repository, as well as two benchmarks related to intrusion detection applications. Our experiments show that DiFF-RF almost systematically outperforms the IF algorithm, but also challenges the one-class SVM baseline and a deep learning variational auto-encoder architecture. Furthermore, our experience shows that DiFF-RF can work well in the presence of small-scale learning data, which is conversely difficult for deep neural architectures. Abstract: International audience; BACKGROUND: All randomised phase 3 studies of selective internal radiation therapy for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma published to date have reported negative results. However, these studies did not use personalised dosimetry. We aimed to compare the efficacy of a personalised versus standard dosimetry approach of selective internal radiation therapy with yttrium-90-loaded glass microspheres in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma.METHODS: DOSISPHERE-01 was a randomised, multicentre, open-label phase 2 trial done at four health-care centres in France. Patients were eligible if they were aged 18 years or older and had unresectable locally advanced hepatocellular carcinoma, at least one measurable lesion 7 cm or more in size, a hepatic reserve of at least 30% after selective internal radiation therapy, no extrahepatic spread (other than to the lymph nodes of the hilum, with a lesion 5% of patients) grade 3 or higher adverse events were ascites (one [3%] patient who received personalised dosimetry vs two [10%] patients who received standard dosimetry), hepatic failure (two [6%] vs none), lymphopenia (12 [34%] vs nine [43%]), increased aspartate aminotransferase concentrations (three [9%] vs two [10%]), increased alanine aminotransferase concentrations (three [9%] vs none), anaemia (two [6%] vs one [5%]), gastrointestinal haemorrhage (none vs two [10%]), and icterus (none vs two [10%]). One treatment-related death occurred in each group.INTERPRETATION: Compared with standard dosimetry, personalised dosimetry significantly improved the objective response rate in patients with locally advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. The results of this study suggest that personalised dosimetry is likely to improve outcomes in clinical practice and should be used in future trials of selective internal radiation therapy. Abstract: Introduction: Kidney biopsies (KBs) are performed in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) to diagnose non-diabetic or hypertensive kidney disease (NDHKD) potentially requiring specific management compared to diabetic and or hypertensive nephropathy (absence of NDHKD). Indications for KB are based on the presence of atypical features compared to the typical course of diabetic nephropathy. In this study, we assessed the association of different patterns of atypical features, or KB indications, with NDHKD. Methods: Native KBs performed in patients with T2D were analyzed. Data were collected from the patients’ records. KB indications were determined according to the presence of different atypical features considered sequentially: (1) presence of any feature suggesting NDHKD which is not among the following ones, (2) recent onset of nephrotic syndrome, (3) low or rapidly declining estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), (4) rapid increase in proteinuria, (5) short duration of diabetes, (6) presence of hematuria, or (7) normal retinal examination. Results: Among the 463 KBs analyzed, NDHKD was diagnosed in 40% of the total population and 54, 40, 24, and 7% of the KBs performed for indications 1–4 respectively. Conversely, no patient who underwent KB for indications 5–7 displayed NDHKD. Logistic regression analyses identified eGFRCKD-EPI >15 mL/min/1.73 m2, urinary protein-to-Cr ratio

Abstract: International audience; A compact 3-D, circular line matched dipole (CLMD) antenna is presented in this paper. The realization of the antenna is based on Laser Direct Structuring (LDS) plastronic technology, enabling metallization on plastic parts. Cylindrical holder is chosen to carry the dipole, which implies high bending constraints on the antenna. Miniaturization of the radiating element is obtained by an effective use of 3-D space, resulting in a very low profile length dimensions of 0.14 lambda x0.14 lambda x0.05 lambda operating at 868MHz. Specific attention is paid to the input impedance change due to conformation. An equivalent circuit model is proposed to take into account the conformation and design the matching line. Both simulated and measured results demonstrate good performances, with a 30 MHz bandwidth (i.e., a relative bandwidth of 3.5% with S-11 < -10 dB) around the working frequency. The LDS prototype achieves a maximum gain of 1.2 dBi with a quasi-omnidirectional radiation pattern. This compact and conformal design presents a real interest for pervasive highly integrated ISM band IoT sensors.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a method for synthesizing metallic horns capable of radiating highly localized electromagnetic pulses, known as X-waves. The proposed method is based on a mode-matching framework for shaped horns. The aperture field distribution required to generate X-waves is synthesized by mode conversion. The near-field horns generated by this method are full-metal structures radiating X-waves in a wide range of frequencies with low dispersion. The obtained structures may be scaled to any frequency range, and they are particularly suited to millimeter and sub-millimeter wave applications. We validate the concept by presenting a horn capable of radiating X-waves over a 44% fractional bandwidth (FBW) with a 5 degrees dispersion of the axicon angle. Capabilities and limitations of this design procedure and the synthesized launchers are demonstrated, discussed, and compared with other state-of-the-art solutions.

Abstract: International audience; Existing traditional and ConvNet-based methods for light field depth estimation mainly work on the narrow-baseline scenario. This paper explores the feasibility and capability of ConvNets to estimate depth in another promising scenario: wide-baseline light fields. Due to the deficiency of training samples, a large-scale and diverse synthetic wide-baseline dataset with labelled data is introduced for depth prediction tasks. Considering the practical goal for real-world applications, we design an end-to-end trained lightweight convolutional network to infer depths from light fields, called LLF-Net. The proposed LLF-Net is built by incorporating a cost volume which allows variable angular light field inputs and an attention module that enables to recover details at occlusion areas. Evaluations are made on the synthetic and real-world wide-baseline light fields, and experimental results show that the proposed network achieves the best performance when compared to recent state-of-the-art methods. We also evaluate our LLF-Net on narrow-baseline datasets, and it consequently improves the performance of previous methods.

Abstract: International audience; The Depth-Image-Based-Rendering (DIBR) is one of the main fundamental technique to generate new views in 3D video applications, such as Multi-View Videos (MVV), Free-Viewpoint Videos (FVV) and Virtual Reality (VR). However, the quality assessment of DIBR-synthesized views is quite different from the traditional 2D images/videos. In recent years, several efforts have been made towards this topic, but there is a lack of detailed survey in the literature. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on various current approaches for DIBR-synthesized views. The current accessible datasets of DIBR-synthesized views are firstly reviewed, followed by a summary analysis of the representative state-of-the-art objective metrics. Then, the performances of different objective metrics are evaluated and discussed on all available datasets. Finally, we discuss the potential challenges and suggest possible directions for future research.

Abstract: International audience; Although the use of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) has high potential in remediation and agriculture, a major hindrance to their use includes the risk of contamination of soil and water resources with underexplored effects of IONPs on biota. The fate, phytotoxicity and remediation potential of IONPs are investigated with soil column experiments using 7 nm-sized magnetite (Fe 3 O 4) nanoparticles (magnNPs) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus). Control soil, magnNP-containing soil (10 g magnNPs per kg soil), copper-polluted soil (500 mg Cu per kg soil) and copper-polluted soil containing magnNPs (10 g magnNPs per kg soil and 500 mg Cu per kg soil) support sunflower growth for 57 and 95 days. In magnNP-exposed plants, the occurrence of magnNPs does not affect the growth of the vegetative aerial parts and photosynthetic efficiency. Decreased lipid peroxidation indicates an enhanced antioxidant enzymatic response of magnNP-exposed plants. In plants grown in Cu-and magnNP-Cu-soils, the physiological and biochemical impacts of excess copper are clearly identified, resulting in growth retardation, decreased pigment contents and photosynthetic efficiency, and increased lipid peroxidation and peroxidase (POD) activities. Based on magnetic susceptibility, a higher amount of magnNPs is detected after 57 days in the roots of magnNP-exposed plants (1400 mg kg À1) than in the roots of magnNP-Cu-exposed plants (920 mg kg À1). In the latter, magnNP internalization is likely hampered because of the plants' physiological responses to Cu toxicity. At the working Cu and magnNP concentrations, magnNPs neither decrease Cu accumulation in the plant tissues nor alleviate the overall growth retardation of sunflowers and certain phytotoxic effects induced by excess Cu. However, this study highlights several positive environmental aspects relative to magnNP use, including the harmless effects of magnNPs on sunflowers (1% magnNPs in soil) and the ability of magnNPs to influence Cu mobility in the soil (which could be even more pronounced at lower Cu concentration).

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we study the use of Bessel-Gauss beam launchers for wireless power transfer (WPT) applications. The power transfer efficiency between two radiating apertures is investigated in the radiative near field. A spectral Green's function approach is used to derive the power efficiency under a simultaneous conjugate impedance match. The transverse electromagnetic (TEM) mode of a coaxial cable, as well as Bessel beam (BB) and Bessel-Gauss beam (BGB) field distributions, are considered as aperture distributions. Numerical results demonstrate that a BGB field distribution is the optimal choice for WPT due to its limited spectrum and reduced diffraction of the radiated beam. We synthesized a Bessel-Gauss launcher that exhibits power efficiency exceeding 50% for distances larger than 30 lambda. These results show that non-diffracting beams can pave the way toward efficient near-field WPT systems with extended operating ranges.

Abstract: International audience; We hereby present a new equivalent circuit model including both lumped and distributed elements for GCPW-MS transitions (GCPW for Grounded CoplanarWaveguide and MS for Microstrip). In order to validate the modelling results, such transitions have been fabricated on a 20 μm-thick BCB (Benzocyclobutene resin) substrate using grounding pads including via-holes of different diameters. The study focused on the impact of the via-hole diameter on the performance of the transition and more specifically on its bandwidth. The transitions were made using a simple technological process based on photosensitive polymer. ADS simulation data of the new equivalent circuit model were in very good agreement with measured S-parameters. Both theoretical and experimental results have shown that the bandwidth of such a transition can reach up to 100 GHz using via-holes of 900 μm diameter.

Abstract: International audience; Probabilistic record linkage is a process of combining data from different sources, when such data refer to common entities and identifying information is not available. Fellegi and Sunter proposed a probabilistic record linkage framework that takes into account multiple non-identifying information, but is limited to simple binary comparison between matching variables. In our work, we propose an extension of this model for mixed-type comparison vectors. We develop a mixture model for handling comparison values of low prevalence categorical matching variables, and a mixture of hurdle gamma distribution for handling comparison values of continuous matching variables. The parameters are estimated by means of the Expectation Conditional Maximization (ECM) algorithm. Through a Monte Carlo simulation study, we evaluate both the posterior probability estimation for a record pair to be a match, and the prediction of matched record pairs. The simulation results indicate that the proposed methods outperform existing ones in most considered cases. The proposed methods are applied on a real dataset, to perform linkage between a registry of patients suffering from venous thromboembolism in the Brest district area (GETBO) and the French national health information system (SNDS).

Abstract: For both chaos-based stream ciphers and chaos-based block ciphers, key streams have a crucial inﬂuence on their security. A well designed pseudo-chaotic number generator (PCNG) that exhibits both chaotic properties and pseudo-randomness is a good candidate for creating the cryptographic key stream for encryption purposes. PCNGs are based on multiple chaotic maps. Since the majority of the chaotic maps are defined using real numbers, most of the proposed PCNGs use floating-point notations. However, this data type, especially the double-precision notation, has disadvantages of high computation cost and inefficient resource utilization. Also, the quantification errors may undermine the reliability of the produced key stream. To overcome these drawbacks, a key stream generation algorithm using a PCNG scheme is proposed in this paper. The PCNG is based on reformulated skew tent maps over a 32-bit integer field. It not only reduces the resource utilization from the hardware perspective, but also ensures the key stream performance over various operation platforms. Furthermore, the proposed PCNG uses a parameter changeable strategy, which can help to expand the key space, and thus increases the immunity against the brute-force attack. The quality of the key stream produced by the PCNG has been tested in a stream cipher. The analysis and the obtained test results have demonstrated that the proposed PCNG is secure and reliable to generate cryptographic key streams for encryption purposes.

Abstract: International audience; Metalcyclopentadienyl complexes (MCp) (M = Fe, Ru, Os) bound to the large polyaromatic hydrogenated hydrocarbon (PAH) CH used as a model for pristine graphene have been studied using a density functional theory (DFT) generalized gradient approximation (PBE functional) to reveal their structural features and dynamic behavior. The inter-ring haptotropic rearrangements (IRHRs) for these complexes were shown to occur via two transition states and one intermediate. The energy barriers of the η ⇌ η IRHRs of the (MCp) unit were found to be 30, 27, and 29 kcal/mol for M = Fe, Ru, and Os, respectively. These values are significantly lower than the values found previously for smaller PAHs. Both polar and nonpolar solvents were found not to affect significantly the energy barrier heights. Investigated transition metal complexes could be used in general as catalysts in the design of novel derivatives or materials with promising properties. Metalcyclopentadienyl complexes (MCp) of PAHs show catalytic properties mainly due to their structural details as well as their important characteristic of inter-ring haptotropic rearrangement. IRHRs take place usually by intramolecular mechanisms. During IRHRs, the ML organometallic groups (OMGs) undergo shifting along the PAH plane and could coordinate additional reagents, which is important for catalysis. Large PAHs such as graphene, fullerenes, and nanotubes possess intrinsic anticancer activity, and numerous arene complexes of Ru and Os have been proven to have anticancer properties as well. We suppose that coordinating Ru or Os to very large PAHs could synergistically increase the anticancer activity of resulting complexes.

Abstract: Cet article propose un panorama historiographique de la structuration de l’archéologie dans l’ouest de la France. Il vise à retracer l’histoire, toujours complexe et particulière, de la formation d’un laboratoire de recherche, et d’en analyser les étapes fondatrices jusqu’aux années 1980. Au-delà de l’évolution de la discipline dans le contexte national, ce sont des personnages et des événements qui influent toujours sur le cours de cette formation. Pour les phases les plus anciennes (fin xixe et première moitié du xxe s.), le fonds d’archives du Laboratoire Archéosciences-CReAAH de l’université de Rennes 1 se révèle une source d’une valeur primordiale, dont l’exploitation est en cours depuis plusieurs années. Pour les périodes suivantes, marquées par la professionnalisation de la discipline, la conjugaison des témoignages et des souvenirs de certains acteurs avec la documentation disponible illustrera les différentes étapes de cette évolution. Cette contribution se veut également un témoignage offrant aux jeunes générations une mise en perspective sur la longue durée de la discipline archéologique et de ses institutions. This paper provides a historiographical overview of the structuring of archaeology in Western France. It aims to retrace the complex and distinctive history a research laboratory from its beginnings until the 1980’s which was influenced by scholars and events within the framework of its development on a national level. The archives of the Archéosciences-CReAAH laboratory at University of Rennes 1 have been the subject of research and conservation for several years and has proved to be a source of paramount importance for the study of the earliest moments (end of the 19th and first half of the 20th century) of the discipline in the region. The following periods are marked by its professionalisation, with the testimonies of the people involved and the written and iconographical sources documenting its evolution. This paper also offers the wider perspective of a long-term approach to archaeology and its institutions for future generations.

Abstract: International audience; Thermoelectric higher manganese silicides, MnSix, were synthesized by magnesioreduction followed by spark plasma sintering with different nominal compositions (x = 1.65, 1.74, and 1.80) and various postsynthesis annealing durations (0, 48, 96, and 336 h). The composite Nowotny chimney-ladder crystal structures of the resulting samples were investigated by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. The modulation vector component gamma, generally considered corresponding to the stoichiometry (x) of the material, was accurately determined by Rietveld refinement using a (3 + 1)D superspace approach. Regardless of the initial nominal composition, all the samples have a similar gamma similar to 1.736 after 48 h of annealing at 900 K. This result suggests that MnSix, at a temperature of 900 K, is better described as a defined compound with x close to 1.736, rather than intermediate solid-solution phases with 1.725 < x < 1.75 as predicted by the commonly accepted phase diagram. At the fixed nominal composition MnSi1.74, gamma increases significantly from 1.7313(2) to 1.7411(1) after 336 h of annealing, indicating that the thermal history influences the Si stoichiometry. The evolution of gamma with time is concomitant with a power factor drop (-19%), attributed to a decrease in charge carrier concentration. The drop of the power factor, partially compensated by a decrease in thermal conductivity, results in a -12% reduction of the maximum figure-of-merit ZT, after prolonged annealing under realistic application conditions.

Abstract: Public key encryption with equality test (PKEET) can check whether two ciphertexts are encrypted from the same message or not without decryption. This attribute enables PKEET to be increasingly utilized in cloud storage, where users store their encrypted data on the cloud. In traditional PKEET, the tester is authorized by the data receiver to perform equality test on its ciphertexts. However, the tester can only test one ciphertext or all ciphertexts of one receiver with one authorization. It means that the receiver cannot adaptively authorize the test right of any number of ciphertexts to the tester. A trivial solution is authorizing one ciphertext each time and repeating multiple times. The corresponding size of trapdoor in this method is linear with the number of authorized ciphertexts. This will incur storage burden for the tester. To solve the aforementioned problem, we propose the concept of PKEET supporting partial authentication (PKEET-PA). We then instantiate the concept to a lightweight PKEET-PA, which achieves constant-size trapdoor. Besides, we prove the security of our PKEET-PA scheme against two types of adversaries. Compared with other PKEET schemes that can be used in trivial solution, our PKEET-PA is more efficient in receivers’ computation and has lower trapdoor size.

Abstract: International audience; In this study, the influence of the degree of crystallization and thickness of films was correlated with the photoelectrochemical performance of SrTaO2N semiconductor films for O2 evolution reaction under visible light irradiation. Oxynitride films were deposited on various substrates using the sputtering in Ar + N2 reactive atmosphere from a home-made SrTaO2N target. Films with stoichiometric composition were obtained at a high temperature (TS =800 °C) with reduced bandgap. The different substrates led to diverse degrees of film crystallization, from weakly crystallized to fully c-axis oriented. The photoelectrochemical performance was improved by improving the film crystallinity and the thickness. For further improvement of the photoelectrochemical performance, the following three limiting factors are identified 1) low absorption coefficient, especially in the visible domain from 500 to 600 nm; 2) short lifetimes of excited charge carriers; and 3) permittivity with only moderate values lower than 10 in the visible-light domain.

Abstract: International audience; This study concerns STLTO compounds of the ferroelectric (Sr 2 Ta 2 O 7) 100-x (La 2 Ti 2 O 7) x solid solution. The purpose is to produce the STLTO composition x = 1.65 as thin films by thermal oxidation of the corresponding oxynitride composition. Indeed, the combination of an STLTO oxide target with a dioxygen-rich reactive atmosphere during the sputtering deposition leads to Sr-deficient oxide thin films, shifting composition and structure from the perovskite to the tetragonal tungsten bronze type. An alternative synthesis pathway is to first deposit, under nitrogen-rich atmosphere, stoichiometric oxynitride films and produce, by thermal annealing under air, the stoichiometric oxide. For low oxidation temperatures ([550-600°C]), samples remain intact and display an oxide character but still contain a significant amount of nitrogen; they could be described as intermediate phases containing nitrogen-nitrogen pairs as demonstrated by Raman. Dielectric characteristics of these original film materials are of interest with a tunability value of 26 % at 30 kV/cm (10 kHz).

Abstract: International audience; IRE1α (inositol requiring enzyme 1 alpha) is one of the main transducers of the unfolded protein response (UPR). IRE1α plays instrumental protumoral roles in several cancers, and high IRE1α activity has been associated with poorer prognoses. In this context, IRE1α has been identified as a potentially relevant therapeutic target. Pharmacological inhibition of IRE1α activity can be achieved by targeting either the kinase domain or the RNase domain. Herein, the recent advances in IRE1α pharmacological targeting is summarized. We describe the identification and optimization of IRE1α inhibitors as well as their mode of action and limitations as anticancer drugs. The potential pitfalls and challenges that could be faced in the clinic, and the opportunities that IRE1α modulating strategies may present are discussed.

Abstract: National audience; Recently, the International Association of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (IATDMCT), that is the learning society for biological pharmacology and toxicology, issued recommendations on the therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of tacrolimus. This is the second consensus after the one issued in 2009. In this document, the role of tacrolimus TDM for the four principal transplanted organs is discussed. The analytical aspects, pharmacogenetics, TDM alternative approaches and the positioning of biomarkers are also presented. Stronger recommendations are about trough concentration targets in kidney and liver transplantation and for other indication of tacrolimus use. For the first time, an area under the curve of tacrolimus concentrations target is recommended for recipients management. Eventually, another set of recommendations are proposed for pharmacodynamic biomarkers used in patients’ follow-up.

Abstract: International audience; Ovarian deficiency, including premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and diminished ovarian reserve (DOR), represents one of the main causes of female infertility. POI is a genetically heterogeneous condition but current understanding of its genetic basis is far from complete, with the cause remaining unknown in the majority of patients. The genes that regulate DOR have been reported but the genetic basis of DOR has not been explored in depth. Both conditions are likely to lie along a continuum of degrees of decrease in ovarian reserve. We performed genomic analysis via whole exome sequencing (WES) followed by in silico analyses and functional experiments to investigate the genetic cause of ovarian deficiency in ten affected women. We achieved diagnoses for three of them, including the identification of novel variants in STAG3, GDF9, and FANCM. We identified potentially causative FSHR variants in another patient. This is the second report of biallelic GDF9 and FANCM variants, and, combined with functional support, validates these genes as bone fide autosomal recessive “POI genes”. We also identified new candidate genes, NRIP1, XPO1, and MACF1. These genes have been linked to ovarian function in mouse, pig, and zebrafish respectively, but never in humans. In the case of NRIP1, we provide functional support for the deleterious nature of the variant via SUMOylation and luciferase/β-galactosidase reporter assays. Our study provides multiple insights into the genetic basis of POI/DOR. We have further elucidated the involvement of GDF9, FANCM, STAG3 and FSHR in POI pathogenesis, and propose new candidate genes, NRIP1, XPO1, and MACF1, which should be the focus of future studies.

Abstract: Surface currents are poorly known over most of the world's oceans. Satellite-borne Doppler wave and current scatterometers (DWaCSs) are among the proposed techniques to fill this observation gap. The Sea surface KInematics Multiscale (SKIM) proposal is the first satellite concept built on a DWaCS design at near-nadir angles and was demonstrated to be technically feasible as part of the European Space Agency Earth Explorer program. This article describes preliminary results from a field experiment performed in November 2018 off the French Atlantic coast, with sea states representative of the open ocean and a well-known tide-dominated current regime, as part of the detailed design and feasibility studies for SKIM. This experiment comprised airborne measurements performed using Ku-band and Ka-band Doppler radars looking at the sea surface at near-nadir incidence in a real-aperture mode, i.e., in a geometry and mode similar to that of SKIM, as well as an extensive set of in situ instruments. The Ku-band Radar for Observation of Surfaces (KuROS) airborne radar provided simultaneous measurements of the radar backscatter and Doppler velocity in a side-looking configuration, with a horizontal resolution of about 5 to 10 m along the line of sight and integrated in the perpendicular direction over the real-aperture 3 dB footprint diameter (about 580 m). The Ka-band RADar for Ocean Current (KaRADOC) system, also operating in the side-looking configuration, had a much narrower beam, with a circular footprint only 45 m in diameter. Results are reported for two days with contrasting conditions, a strong breeze on 22 November 2018 (wind speed 11.5 m s−1, Hs 2.6 m) and gentle breeze on 24 November 2018 (wind speed 5.5 m s−1, Hs 1.7 m). The measured line-of-sight velocity signal is analyzed to separate a non-geophysical contribution linked to the aircraft velocity, a geophysical contribution due to the intrinsic motion of surface waves and the desired surface current contribution. The surface wave contribution is found to be well predicted by Kirchhoff scattering theory using as input parameters in situ measurements of the directional spectrum of long waves, complemented by the short wave spectrum of Elfouhaily et al. (1997). It is found to be closely aligned with the wind direction, with small corrections due to the presence of swell. Its norm is found to be weakly variable with wind speed and sea state, quite stable and close to C0=2.0ms-1 at the Ka band, and more variable and close to C0=2.4ms-1 at the Ku band. These values are 10 %–20 % smaller than previous theoretical estimates. The directional spread of the short gravity waves is found to have a marked influence on this surface wave contribution. Overall, the results of this study support the feasibility of near-nadir radar Doppler remote sensing of the ocean total surface current velocity (TSCV).
