Abstract

We investigate the peculiar properties of a large TeV gamma-ray flare from Mrk~501 detected during the 2009 multiwavelength campaign. We identify the counterpart of the flare in the Fermi/LAT telescope data and study its spectral and timing characteristics. A strong order-of-magnitude increase of the very-high-energy gamma-ray flux during the flare was not accompanied by an increase in the X-ray flux, so that the flare was one of the "orphan"-type TeV flares observed in BL Lacs. The flare lasted about 1 month at energies above 10 GeV. The flaring source spectrum in the 10-200 GeV range was very hard, with a photon index 1.1+/-0.2, harder than that observed in any other blazar in the gamma-ray band. No simultaneous flaring activity was detected below 10 GeV. Different variability properties of the emission below and above 10 GeV indicate the existence of two separate components in the spectrum. We investigate possible explanations of the very hard flaring component. We consider, among others, the possibility that the flare is produced by an electromagnetic cascade initiated by very-high-energy gamma-rays in the intergalactic medium. Within such an interpretation, peculiar spectral and temporal characteristics of the flare could be explained if the magnetic field in the intergalactic medium is of the order of 1e-17 - 1e-16 G., 4 pages 3 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

We consider a possibility of identification of sources of cosmic rays (CR) of the energy above 1 TeV via observation of degree-scale extended gamma-ray emission which traces the locations of recent sources in the Galaxy. Such emission in the energy band above 100 GeV is produced by CR nuclei and electrons released by the sources and spreading into the interstellar medium. We use the data from the Fermi gamma-ray telescope to locate the degree-scale 100 GeV gamma-ray sources. We find that the number of such sources and their overall power match to those expected when CRs injection events happen every ~100 yr in portions of ~1e50 erg. We find that most of the sources are associated to pulsars with spin down age less than ~30 kyr and hence to the recent supernova explosions. This supports the hypothesis of supernova origin of Galactic CRs. We notice that the degree-scale extended emission does not surround shell-like supernova remnants without pulsars. Based on this observation, we argue that the presence of the pulsar is essential for the CR acceleration process. We expect that a significant fraction of the degree-scale sources should be detectable as extended sources with km3-scale neutrino detectors., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.D

Abstract

We report the observation in the GeV band of the blazar 1ES 0229+200, which over recent years has become one the primary sources used to put constraints on the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) and Extragalactic Magnetic Field (EGMF). We derive constraints on both the EBL and EGMF from the combined Fermi-HESS data set taking into account the direct and cascade components of the source spectrum. We show that the limit on the EBL depends on the EGMF strength and vice versa. In particular, an EBL density twice as high as that derived by Franceschini et al. (2008) is allowed if the EGMF is strong enough. On the other hand, an EGMF strength as low as 6x10^-18 G is allowed if the EBL density is at the level of the lower bound from the direct source counts. Abstract

Measurements of the low energy spectrum of Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR) by detectors at or near the Earth are affected by Solar modulation. To overcome this difficulty, we consider nearby molecular clouds as GCR detectors outside the Solar system. Using gamma-ray observations of the clouds by the Fermi telescope we derive the spectrum of GCRs in the clouds from the observed gamma-ray emission spectrum. We find that the GCR spectrum has a low energy break with the spectral slope hardening by 1.1+/-0.3 at an energy of 9+/-3 GeV. Detection of a low-energy break enables a measurement of GCR energy density in the interstellar space 0.9+/-0.3 eV/cm3., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures plus Supplemental Material. Abstract

The peopling of the Americas has been the subject of extensive genetic, archaeological and linguistic research; however, central questions remain unresolved. One contentious issue is whether the settlement occurred by means of a single migration or multiple streams of migration from Siberia. The pattern of dispersals within the Americas is also poorly understood. To address these questions at a higher resolution than was previously possible, we assembled data from 52 Native American and 17 Siberian groups genotyped at 364,470 single nucleotide polymorphisms. Here we show that Native Americans descend from at least three streams of Asian gene flow. Most descend entirely from a single ancestral population that we call First American. However, speakers of Eskimog-Aleut languages from the Arctic inherit almost half their ancestry from a second stream of Asian gene flow, and the Na-Dene-speaking Chipewyan from Canada inherit roughly one-tenth of their ancestry from a third stream. We show that the initial peopling followed a southward expansion facilitated by the coast, with sequential population splits and little gene flow after divergence, especially in South America. A major exception is in Chibchan speakers on both sides of the Panama isthmus, who have ancestry from both North and South America. © 2012 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved. Abstract

This case study focuses on the feedback that is provided by tutors to learners in the course of synchronous online teaching. More specifically, we study how trainee tutors used the affordances of Visu, an experimental web videoconferencing system, to provide negative feedback. Visu features classical functionalities such as video and chat, and it also offers a unique marking tool that allows tutors to take time-coded notes during the online interactions for later pedagogical remediation. Our study shows that tutors mainly use verbal and chat feedback, with significant inter-individual variability, and that tutors who provide verbal feedback are more likely to use markers. Marking takes time because of the dual task that it entails for the tutor. Idiosyncratic strategies in the use of markers are evidenced. Abstract

International audience; This article presents a pilot study carried out to investigate the potential of a functionality marker setting, included in a synchronous collaborative videoconferencing platform (VISU). Markers, supported by a trace-based system, are designed to facilitate tutors' activity. They provide tutors with (1) the possibility of annotating their distant learners' learning activity, and (2) information pertaining to their own behavior during pedagogical interaction, which can potentially enhance their professional performance as online language tutors. This study concentrates on the marker-based traces of eight language tutors collected in the course of pedagogical interactions with their distant learners during a seven-week transnational collaborative project. It presents both quantitative and qualitative analyses of the use of markers during synchronous language teaching sessions and assesses the utility and usability of such a functionality for language tutoring in order to inform future design and training.

Abstract

International audience; Sertoli cells (SCs) are the central, essential coordinators of spermatogenesis, without which germ cell development cannot occur. We previously showed that Dicer, an RNaseIII endonuclease required for microRNA (miRNA) biogenesis, is absolutely essential for Sertoli cells to mature, survive, and ultimately sustain germ cell development. Here, using isotope-coded protein labeling, a technique for protein relative quantification by mass spectrometry, we investigated the impact of Sertoli cell-Dicer and subsequent miRNA loss on the testicular proteome. We found that, a large proportion of proteins (50 out of 130) are up-regulated by more that 1.3-fold in testes lacking Sertoli cell-Dicer, yet that this protein up-regulation is mild, never exceeding a 2-fold change, and is not preceeded by alterations of the corresponding mRNAs. Of note, the expression levels of six proteins of interest were further validated using the Absolute Quantification (AQUA) peptide technology. Furthermore, through 3'UTR luciferase assays we identified one up-regulated protein, SOD-1, a Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase whose overexpression has been linked to enhanced cell death through apoptosis, as a likely direct target of three Sertoli cell-expressed miRNAs, miR-125a-3p, miR-872 and miR-24. Altogether, our study, which is one of the few in vivo analyses of miRNA effects on protein output, suggests that, at least in our system, miRNAs play a significant role in translation control.

Abstract

We study the origin of the extragalactic diffuse gamma-ray background using the data from the Fermi telescope. To estimate the background level, we count photons at high Galactic latitudes |b|>60 degrees. Subtracting photons associated to known sources and the residual cosmic ray and Galactic diffuse backgrounds, we estimate the Extragalactic Gamma-ray Background (EGB) flux. We find that the spectrum of EGB in the very-high-energy (VHE) band above 30 GeV follows the stacked spectrum of BL Lacs. LAT data reveal the positive (1+z)^k, 130 GeV could be completely explained by emission from unresolved BL Lacs if k~3., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted to Astrophysics Journal

Abstract

We analyze the gamma-ray halo around stacked AGNs reported in Ap.J.Lett., 2010, 722, L39. First, we show that the angular distribution of gamma-rays around the stacked AGNs is consistent with the angular distribution of the gamma-rays around the Crab pulsar, which is a point source for Fermi/LAT. This makes it unlikely that the halo is caused by an electromagnetic cascade of TeV photons in the intergalactic space. We then compare the angular distribution of gamma-rays around the stacked AGNs with the point-spread function (PSF) of Fermi/LAT and confirm the existence of an excess above the PSF. However, we demonstrate that the magnitude and the angular size of this effect is different for photons converted in the front and back parts of the Fermi/LAT instrument, and thus is an instrumental effect., Comment: accepted to A&A

Abstract

Cet article s’adresse à un public de formateurs intéressés par la mise en place d’un dispositif d’accompagnement humain en ligne et partiellement automatisé dans le cadre d’une formation à distance. Son propos est de présenter une méthode de design pédagogique basée sur les scénarios, et d’en illustrer l’expression dans le cadre de la conception d’une situation d’assistance à la tâche de compréhension de synthèses de textes. Cette situation a été implantée dans une application en ligne afin de pouvoir être mise en œuvre en situation de formation universitaire. This paper is intended for trainers interested in the implementation of a partially automated online human support scheme as part of distance learning. It is aimed to present an instructional design method based on scenarios and illustrate it through providing support to better understand text summaries. This situation was tested in an online application before being implemented in an academic course. Dieser Artikel wendet sich an Ausbilder, die sich für die Einführung eines teilautomatisierten Online-Betreuungsdienstes im Rahmen einer Distanzausbildung interessieren. Wir stellen eine Methode des pädagogischen Designs vor, die auf Szenarien basiert und wir veranschaulichen sie im Rahmen der Konzipierung einer Betreuungssituation zur Verständigung von Textsynthesen. Diese Situation wurde in eine Online-Applikation eingeführt, damit sie in der Hochschulausbildung benutzt werden kann. Este artículo se dirige a un público de formadores interesados en la puesta en marcha de un dispositivo de acompañamiento humano en línea y parcialmente automatizado dentro del marco de una formación a distancia. Su propósito es presentar un método de diseño pedagógico basado en las secuencias,así como ilustrar su expresión dentro del marco de la concepción de una situación de ayuda a la tarea de comprensión de síntesis de textos. Esta situación ha sido implantada en una aplicación en línea con el fin de ser puesta en práctica en situación de formación universitaria.

Abstract

International audience; Advances in e-Infrastructure promise to revolutionize sensing systems and the way in which data are collected and assimilated, and complex water systems are simulated and visualized. According to the EU Infrastructure 2010 work-programme, data and compute infrastructures and their underlying technologies, either oriented to tackle scientific challenges or complex problem solving in engineering, are expected to converge together into the so-called knowledge infrastructures, leading to a more effective research, education and innovation in the next decade and beyond. Grid technology is recognized as a fundamental component of e-Infrastructures. Nevertheless, this emerging paradigm highlights several topics, including data management, algorithm optimization, security, performance (speed, throughput, bandwidth, etc.), and scientific cooperation and collaboration issues that require further examination to fully exploit it and to better inform future research policies. The paper illustrates the results of six different surface and subsurface hydrology applications that have been deployed on the Grid. All the applications aim to answer to strong requirements from the Civil Society at large, relatively to natural and anthropogenic risks. Grid technology has been successfully tested to improve flood prediction, groundwater resources management and Black Sea hydrological survey, by providing large computing resources. It is also shown that Grid technology facilitates e-cooperation among partners by means of services for authentication and authorization, seamless access to distributed data sources, data protection and access right, and standardization.

Abstract

International audience; Most e-learning systems engage successively students in reading, writing and assessment activities. In the third phase, the teacher gives feedback on student comprehension, which is often processed a long time after the others, letting the students alone with their difficulties. Thus, there is room to devise automated assessment systems on course comprehension, based on NLP techniques such as latent semantic analysis (LSA). The aim of this paper is to present some systems devised to complete this aim, which implement LSA to model learners' comprehension and/or to compare reading material (e.g., course text) with learners' summaries about it, select reading materials and predict student processes from their summaries.

Abstract

We investigate weakly coupled spin-1/2 ladders in a magnetic field. The work is motivated by recent experiments on the compound (C5H12N)2CuBr4 (BPCB). We use a combination of numerical and analytical methods, in particular the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique, to explore the phase diagram and the excitation spectra of such a system. We give detailed results on the temperature dependence of the magnetization and the specific heat, and the magnetic field dependence of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate of single ladders. For coupled ladders, treating the weak interladder coupling within a mean-field or quantum Monte Carlo approach, we compute the transition temperature of triplet condensation and its corresponding antiferromagnetic order parameter. Existing experimental measurements are discussed and compared to our theoretical results. Furthermore we compute, using time dependent DMRG, the dynamical correlations of a single spin ladder. Our results allow to directly describe the inelastic neutron scattering cross section up to high energies. We focus on the evolution of the spectra with the magnetic field and compare their behavior for different couplings. The characteristic features of the spectra are interpreted using different analytical approaches such as the mapping onto a spin chain, a Luttinger liquid (LL) or onto a t-J model. For values of parameters for which such measurements exist, we compare our results to inelastic neutron scattering experiments on the compound BPCB and find excellent agreement. We make additional predictions for the high energy part of the spectrum that are potentially testable in future experiments., Comment: 35 pages, 26 figures

Abstract

International audience; Emotional processing deficits are key features in major depressive disorder (MDD). Neuroimaging studies indicate that the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) plays a pivotal role in both depressive symptoms and emotional processing. Recently, transcranial Direct Current Stimulations (tDCS) applied over the DLPFCs have held the promise to alleviate the symptoms in patients with MDD, but the effect on emotional processing in the patients is unclear. Here, we investigated the effect of a single session of tDCS over the DLPFCs on the emotional processing in patients with treatment-resistant MDD. In a randomized sham-controlled study, 35 patients received a single 30 min session of either active (2 mA, n = 18) or sham tDCS (n = 17). The anode was placed over the left and the cathode over the right DLPFC. Emotional processing accuracy was measured by a facial emotion recognition (FER) task. We observed an overall improvement in FER performance after the active tDCS, but not the sham tDCS. These exploratory results suggest that a single session of tDCS over the DLPFCs may improve FER in MDD, a crucial function of social cognition. Further studies are needed to investigate whether this acute improvement of FER in response to a single tDCS session could translate into clinical benefits or predict remission following repeated sessions of stimulation.

Abstract

SPHERE+ is a proposed upgrade of the SPHERE instrument at the VLT, which is intended to boost the current performances of detection and characterization for exoplanets and disks. SPHERE+ will also serve as a demonstrator for the future planet finder (PCS) of the European ELT. The main science drivers for SPHERE+ are 1/ to access the bulk of the young giant planet population down to the snow line ($3-10$ au), to bridge the gap with complementary techniques (radial velocity, astrometry); 2/ to observe fainter and redder targets in the youngest ($1-10$\,Myr) associations compared to those observed with SPHERE to directly study the formation of giant planets in their birth environment; 3/ to improve the level of characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres by increasing the spectral resolution in order to break degeneracies in giant planet atmosphere models. Achieving these objectives requires to increase the bandwidth of the xAO system (from $\sim$1 to 3\,kHz) as well as the sensitivity in the infrared (2 to 3\,mag). These features will be brought by a second stage AO system optimized in the infrared with a pyramid wavefront sensor. As a new science instrument, a medium resolution integral field spectrograph will provide a spectral resolution from 1000 to 5000 in the J and H bands. Abstract

While the standard formulation of quantum theory assumes a fixed background causal structure, one can relax this assumption within the so-called process matrix framework. Remarkably, some processes, termed causally nonseparable, are incompatible with a definite causal order. We explore a form of certification of causal nonseparability in a semi-device-independent scenario where the involved parties receive trusted quantum inputs, but whose operations are otherwise uncharacterised. Defining the notion of causally nonseparable distributed measurements, we show that certain causally nonseparable processes which cannot violate any causal inequality, including the canonical example of the quantum switch, can generate noncausal correlations in such a scenario. Moreover, by imposing some further natural structure to the untrusted operations, we show that all bipartite causally nonseparable process matrices can be certified with trusted quantum inputs., 6 + 17 pages, 1 figure. v2: updated to published version

Abstract

International audience; In chemical synapses undergoing high frequency stimulation, vesicle components can be retrieved from the plasma membrane via a clathrin-independent process called activity-dependent bulk endocytosis (ADBE). Alix (ALG-2-interacting protein X/PDCD6IP) is an adaptor protein binding to ESCRT and endophilin-A proteins which is required for clathrin-independent endocytosis in fibroblasts. Alix is expressed in neurons and concentrates at synapses during epileptic seizures. Here, we used cultured neurons to show that Alix is recruited to presynapses where it interacts with and concentrates endophilin-A during conditions triggering ADBE. Using Alix knockout (ko) neurons, we showed that this recruitment, which requires interaction with the calcium-binding protein ALG-2, is necessary for ADBE. We also found that presynaptic compartments of Alix ko hippocampi display subtle morphological defects compatible with flawed synaptic activity and plasticity detected electrophysiologically. Furthermore, mice lacking Alix in the forebrain undergo less seizures during kainate-induced status epilepticus and reduced propagation of the epileptiform activity. These results thus show that impairment of ADBE due to the lack of neuronal Alix leads to abnormal synaptic recovery during physiological or pathological repeated stimulations.

Abstract

We study a quantum many-body variant of the parametric oscillator, by investigating the driven sine-Gordon model with a modulated tunnel coupling via a semi-classical Truncated Wigner Approximation (TWA). We first analyze the parametric resonant regime for driving protocols that retain our model gapped, and compare the TWA to a Time-Dependent Gaussian Variational Ansatz (TGVA). We then turn to a drive which closes the gap, resulting in an enhanced energy absorption. While the TGVA approach breaks down in this regime, we can apply TWA to explore the dynamics of the mode-resolved energy density, and the higher-order correlations between modes in the prethermal heating regime. For weak driving amplitude, we find an exponentially fast energy absorption in the main resonant mode, while the heating of all remaining modes is almost perfectly suppressed on short time scales. At later times, the highly excited main resonance provides effective resonant driving terms for its higher harmonics through the non-linearities in the Hamiltonian, and gives rise to an exponentially fast heating in these particular modes. We capture the strong correlations induced by these resonant processes by evaluating higher order connected correlation functions. Abstract

International audience; During development, hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are produced from the hemogenic endothelium and will expand in a transient hematopoietic niche. Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) is essential during vertebrate development and HSC specification, but its precise source in the embryo remains elusive. Here, we show that in the zebrafish embryo, PGE2 synthesis genes are expressed by distinct stromal cell populations, myeloid (neutrophils, macrophages), and endothelial cells of the caudal hematopoietic tissue. Ablation of myeloid cells, which produce the PGE2 precursor prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), results in loss of HSCs in the caudal hematopoietic tissue, which could be rescued by exogeneous PGE2 or PGH2 supplementation. Endothelial cells contribute by expressing the PGH2 import transporter slco2b1 and ptges3, the enzyme converting PGH2 into PGE2. Of note, differential niche cell expression of PGE2 biosynthesis enzymes is also observed in the mouse fetal liver. Taken altogether, our data suggest that the triad composed of neutrophils, macrophages, and endothelial cells sequentially and synergistically contributes to blood stem cell expansion during vertebrate development.

International audience; Megaliths of the World brings together the latest research on megalithic monuments throughout the world. Many of these sites are well known, others less familiar, yet equally deserving of close attention. Megalithic monuments in different regions of the world are far from being a single unified phenomenon, having varied chronologies, and diverse origins, but they all share a certain family resemblance through their common characteristic: the deployment of large stones. No fewer than 150 researchers have contributed 72 articles and inserts, providing a vital region-by region account of the megalithic monuments in their specialist areas, and the current state of knowledge.The insights offered in these volumes emphasize the particular character and significance of these apparently inanimate stones. The use of such large blocks must surely have been an expression of power or prestige, yet the size and materiality of the stones themselves opens up new perspectives into the meaning and symbolism of these monuments, the places from which the blocks were derived, and the way they were manipulated and shaped.Megaliths of the World takes the reader on a fascinating journey, offering new insights through encounters with megaliths and megalithic traditions that will often be new and unfamiliar. Abstract

We present the third data release of the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, GDR3. The GDR3 catalogue is the outcome of the processing of raw data collected with the Gaia instruments during the first 34 months of the mission by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium. The GDR3 catalogue contains the same source list, celestial positions, proper motions, parallaxes, and broad band photometry in the G, G$_{BP}$, and G$_{RP}$ pass-bands already present in the Early Third Data Release. International audience; 1. Large river floodplains are dynamic environments, where alternating low and high flows are key ecological processes shaping aquatic biota. As a result of fluctuations in flow in floodplain channels, the diversity of benthic assemblages is assumed to result from the balance between surface flow connections, which are dominant during high flows, and groundwater inputs, which are dominant during low flows. However, the relative importance of these inputs in explaining aquatic invertebrate diversity has never been tested. 2. The response of aquatic invertebrates to hydrological changes of a river flood-plain was investigated in seven braided and six braided-anastomosed flood-plain channels of the French upper Rhône River that are fed by three different processes: groundwater supply (which controls the thermal inertia of the water bodies), surface slow flow connections (i.e. diffuse overbank flows; passive overflow), and surface shear stress-related connections (i.e. condensed flows; active overflow) during high flows. 3. Generalised dissimilarity models indicated that floodplain invertebrate composition had complex relationships with the three processes considered. The relative importance of the latter appeared dependent upon the morphology of the floodplain channels. In the braided channels, the effects of shear stress-related connections were more prominent than in the anastomosed ones, for which the effects of the three processes were more similar. 4. Overall, the diversity of flow connections, that is, lateral surface water connections (both shear stress-related and slow, as defined above) and vertical connection with groundwater (inferred through thermal inertia) enhanced the species turnover at the reach scale. Thermal inertia influenced invertebrate composition when, during low flow periods, surface flow connections had limited effect. 5. Our results highlighted that the role of hydrologic connectivity upon flood-plain diversity cannot be reduced to a single process. They also indicate the importance of vertical connectivity for maintaining biodiversity in floodplain habitats where surface flow connectivity is neither frequent nor constant.

Abstract

Recent advances in molecular biomonitoring open new horizons for aquatic ecosystem assessment. Rapid and cost-effective methods based on organismal DNA or environmental DNA (eDNA) now offer the opportunity to produce inventories of indicator taxa that can subsequently be used to assess biodiversity and ecological quality. However, the integration of these new DNA-based methods into current monitoring practices is not straightforward, and will require coordinated actions in the coming years at national and international levels. To plan and stimulate such an integration, the European network DNAqua-Net (COST Action CA15219) brought together international experts from academia, as well as key environmental biomonitoring stakeholders from different European countries. Together, this transdisciplinary consortium developed a roadmap for implementing DNA-based methods with a focus on inland waters assessed by the EU Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC). This was done through a series of online workshops held in April 2020, which included fifty participants, followed by extensive synthesis work. The roadmap is organised around six objectives: 1) to highlight the effectiveness and benefits of DNA-based methods, 2) develop an adaptive approach for the implementation of new methods, 3) provide guidelines and standards for best practice, 4) engage stakeholders and ensure effective knowledge transfer, 5) support the environmental biomonitoring sector to achieve the required changes, 6) steer the process and harmonise efforts at the European level. This paper provides an overview of the forum discussions and the common European views that have emerged from them, while reflecting the diversity of situations in different countries. It highlights important actions required for a successful implementation of DNA-based biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems by 2030.

Abstract

International audience; Dinners constitute an ideal stage for participants to talk about the here and now -proximal discourse - but also to narrate the events of the day, collectively remember past events, make plans, or argue - distal discourse - (Dancygier, 2019). Participants dynamically switch to discourse that spans beyond the dinner time and more specifically the children’s day apart from parents in school (Morgenstern et al. 2021). In this study, we center on how distal events and topics revolving around school are incorporated and embodied at the dinner table through objects, discourse and gesture.Using ELAN, we coded all discourse topics in 8 hearing and speaking family dinners, the length of each sequence and whether discourse was proximal or distal. We compared linguistic features (words/signs/gestures types and tokens, length of turn, syntactic complexity, speech act variety, types of gestures, body parts involved, gaze and participation framework). We then focused on discourse about school and coded all the semiotic resources used during the sequences. As expected, we found that in our French speaking and LSF signing families, focus on school is often initiated by parents’ eager questions, as they are curious to elicit information about their children’s autonomous experiences. The distal events are then embodied through gestures, actions and postures in long and lively sequences, and even materialized when children bring their school objects to the dinner table. Deaf and hearing children often capture all family members’ attention. But school can also be materialized incidentally in the here and now through free associations with dining activities and deviant uses of forks, tooth picks, radishes, peas, croutons and cheese floating on soup. School life is thus integrated in French middle-class family life by parents who position themselves as co-educators and children who are dynamically socialized to being reflective multimodal learners and “languagers”.

Abstract

International audience; Lake Cadagno, a permanently stratified high-alpine lake with a persistent microbial bloom in its chemocline, has long been considered a model for the low-oxygen, high-sulfide Proterozoic ocean. Although the lake has been studied for over 25 years, the absence of concerted study of the bacteria, phytoplankton, and viruses, together with primary and secondary production, has hindered a comprehensive understanding of its microbial food web. Here, the identities, abundances, and productivity of microbes were evaluated in the context of Lake Cadagno biogeochemistry. Photosynthetic pigments together with 16S rRNA gene phylogenies suggest the prominence of eukaryotic phytoplankton chloroplasts, primarily chlorophytes. Chloroplasts closely related to those of high-alpine-adapted Ankyra judayi persisted with oxygen in the mixolimnion, where photosynthetic efficiency was high, while chloroplasts of Closteriopsis-related chlorophytes peaked in the chemocline and monimolimnion. The anoxygenic phototrophic sulfur bacterium Chromatium dominated the chemocline along with Lentimicrobium, a genus of known fermenters. Secondary production peaked in the chemocline, which suggested that anoxygenic primary producers depended on heterotrophic nutrient remineralization. The virus-to-microbe ratio peaked with phytoplankton abundances in the mixolimnion and were at a minimum where Chromatium abundance was highest, trends that suggest that viruses may play a role in the modulation of primary production. Through the combined analysis of bacterial, eukaryotic, viral, and biogeochemical spatial dynamics, we provide a comprehensive synthesis of the Lake Cadagno microbial loop. This study offers a new ecological perspective on how biological and geochemical connections may have occurred in the chemocline of the Proterozoic ocean, where eukaryotic microbial life is thought to have evolved. IMPORTANCE As a window into the past, this study offers insights into the potential role that microbial guilds may have played in the production and recycling of organic matter in ancient Proterozoic ocean chemoclines. The new observations described here suggest that chloroplasts of eukaryotic algae were persistent in the low-oxygen upper chemocline along with the purple and green sulfur bacteria known to dominate the lower half of the chemocline. 8 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables; International audience; Language models for historical states of language are becoming increasingly important to allow the optimal digitisation and analysis of old textual sources. Because these historical states are at the same time more complex to process and more scarce in the corpora available, specific efforts are necessary to train natural language processing (NLP) tools adapted to the data. In this paper, we present our efforts to develop NLP tools for Early Modern French (historical French from the 16th to the 18th centuries). We present the FreEMmax corpus of Early Modern French and D'AlemBERT, a RoBERTa-based language model trained on FreEMmax. We evaluate the usefulness of D'AlemBERT by fine-tuning it on a part-of-speech tagging task, outperforming previous work on the test set. Importantly, we find evidence for the transfer learning capacity of the language model, since its performance on lesser-resourced time periods appears to have been boosted by the more resourced ones. We release D'AlemBERT and the open-sourced subpart of the FreEMmax corpus.

Abstract

International audience; Spelling normalisation is a useful step in the study and analysis of historical language texts, whether it is manual analysis by experts or automatic analysis using downstream natural language processing (NLP) tools. Not only does it help to homogenise the variable spelling that often exists in historical texts, but it also facilitates the use of off-the-shelf contemporary NLP tools, if contemporary spelling conventions are used for normalisation. We present FREEMnorm, a new benchmark for the normalisation of Early Modern French (from the 17th century) into contemporary French and provide a thorough comparison of three different normalisation methods: ABA, an alignment-based approach and MT-approaches, (both statistical and neural), including extensive parameter searching, which is often missing in the normalisation literature.

International audience; Passées en quatre décennies du statut de pratiques artistiques confidentielles à celui de courant esthétique majeur, les musiques hip-hop portent des innovations fondées sur de nouvelles techniques instrumentales (Djing, sampling, etc.) et vocales (interprétations rappées, ragga, human beatboxing, etc.). En tant que musiques de producteurs, elles sont à l’avant-garde des mutations que connaissent les industries musicales sous l’effet de l’informatisation puis de la numérisation de la création. En France comme dans de nombreux autres pays, leur essor a contribué à diversifier les musiques populaires et à en renouveler les pratiques. Pourtant, la valorisation culturelle de ces œuvres, situées au carrefour de tensions sociales vives, demeure contestée.Première synthèse des connaissances sur les musiques hip-hop, cet ouvrage mêle résultats d’enquêtes inédites et état de la recherche en sciences sociales. Maisons-Alfort : Anses, 105 p.; En France, comme pour l’air extérieur, la qualité de l’air à l’intérieur des bâtiments constitue une préoccupation de santé publique, en particulier puisque chaque individu passe en moyenne, en climat tempéré, 85 % de son temps dans des environnements clos dont une majorité de ce temps dans l’habitat. L’environnement intérieur offre une grande diversité de situations de pollutions par de nombreux agents physiques et contaminants chimiques ou microbiologiques, liées notamment à la nature des matériaux de construction, aux équipements, à l’environnement extérieur immédiat etaux activités des occupants. Or, les pollutions peuvent avoir des conséquences importantes sur l’état de santé des individus, même si elles ne sont pas toutes quantifiables avec précision et s’il est souvent difficile de s’accorder sur la part des déterminants génétiques, sociaux et environnementaux dans l’apparition et le développement des pathologies observées : irritations, maladies allergiques, pathologies dermatologiques d’origine immunitaire, affections broncho-pulmonaires, intoxications aiguës, cancers, syndrome des bâtiments malsains (SBM ou sick building syndrome (SBS)), etc.Les données collectées par l’Observatoire de la Qualité de l’Air Intérieur (OQAI), mis en place par les pouvoirs publics en 2001, ont confirmé la nécessité de disposer, au niveau national et par polluant, de valeurs de référence permettant de situer les niveaux de concentrations mesurées dans les environnements clos et d’instaurer des mesures de réduction des émissions proportionnées notamment au risque potentiel encouru. Par ailleurs, le manque de niveaux de référence pour la qualité de l’air intérieur limite le développement de référentiels utiles pour la qualification, en termes sanitaires, des émissions de composés par les produits de construction, de décoration ou de consommation. Ces éléments manquent également pour la conception de protocoles en vue de la spécification de bâtiments à Haute Qualité Environnementale (HQE).À l’échelle internationale, des valeurs de recommandations sont proposées dans certains pays et par quelques organismes reconnus. Le rapport du projet européen INDEX (CE, 2005), financé par la Direction Générale de la Commission Européenne pour la santé et la protection des consommateurs (DG SANCO), a dressé en 2005 une liste de polluants chimiques prioritaires des environnements intérieurs susceptibles d’être réglementés dans le futur et a proposé des valeurs guides de qualité d’air intérieur. Par ailleurs, l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS) s’est engagée en 2006 à proposer des valeurs guides de qualité de l’air intérieur (OMS, 2006) en distinguant trois groupes : substances chimiques, agents biologiques et polluants émis par la combustion intérieure. Les travaux relatifs spécifiquement à l’humidité et aux moisissures ont été publiés en 2009 (OMS, 2009). Puis, des valeurs guides de qualité d’air intérieur ont été publiées fin2010 pour neuf substances chimiques (OMS, 2010).En France, des actions à court, moyen et long terme afin d’améliorer la qualité de l’air dans les espaces clos ont été proposées en octobre 2013 par les ministères chargés de l’écologie et de la santé lors du lancement du Plan d’actions sur la qualité de l’air intérieur aux deuxièmes assises nationales de la qualité de l’air. Celles-ci constituent le volet sur l’air intérieur du troisième Plan national santé-environnement (PNSE 3).Pour faire face à l’enjeu sanitaire que représente la qualité de l’air intérieur et apporter aux pouvoirs publics des éléments utiles à la gestion de ce risque, l’Agence nationale de sécurité sanitaire de l’alimentation de l’environnement et du travail (Anses) s’est autosaisie en 2004 afin d’élaborer des valeurs guides de qualité d’air intérieur (VGAI), fondées sur des critères sanitaires.Les VGAI proposées par l’Anses constituent le socle initial du procédé institutionnel visant à fixer des valeurs réglementaires de surveillance de la qualité de l’air intérieur.Afin d’appuyer les pouvoirs publics dans l’élaboration de valeurs opérationnelles permettant de mettre en place des actions d’amélioration de la qualité d’air intérieur, le ministère chargé de la santé a demandé au Haut conseil de la santé publique (HCSP) de proposer, à partir des VGAI de l’Anses, des valeurs repères d’aide à la gestion de la qualité d’air intérieur, ainsi qu’un calendrier pour leur déploiement. Le HCSP formule des propositions afin d’éclairer les gestionnaires du risque sur les niveaux de concentration à partir desquels des actions sont à entreprendre. Le HCSP tient comptede considérations pratiques, réglementaires, juridiques, économiques et sociologiques.Enfin, conformément à la loi du 1er août 2008 relative à la responsabilité environnementale, les VGAI réglementaires sont établies par le Ministère chargé de l’écologie inscrites dans le code de l’environnement et sont associées à des mesures de gestion.

Abstract

We perform a search for sources of gamma-rays with energies E>100 GeV at low Galactic latitudes |b|100 GeV gives Test Statistics (TS) values above 25. Only 10 out of the 19 high-significance sources can be readily identified with previously known VHE gamma-ray sources. 4 sources could be parts of extended emission from known VHE gamma-ray sources. Five sources are new detections in the VHE band. Among these new detections we tentatively identify one source as a possible extragalactic source PMN J1603-4904 (a blazar candidate), one as a pulsar wind nebula around PSR J1828-1007. High significance cluster of VHE events is also found at the position of a source coincident with the Eta Carinae nebula. In the Galactic Center region, strong VHE gamma-ray signal is detected from Sgr C molecular cloud, but not from the Galactic Center itself., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We construct a systematic survey of extragalactic \gamma-ray sky at the energies above 100 GeV using the data of Fermi telescope. Such survey has not been previously done by the ground-based Cherenkov gamma-ray telescopes which have, contrary to Fermi, narrow field of view. We study a map of arrival directions of the highest energy photons detected by Fermi at Galactic latitudes |b| > 10 degrees and search for significant point source like excesses above the diffuse Galactic and extragalactic \gamma-ray backgrounds. We identify eight significant point source like excesses in this map. Seven of the eight sources are known TeV blazars. The previously unknown source is identified with a head-tail radio galaxy IC 310, situated in Perseus cluster of galaxies. The source is detected with significance 6 sigma above 30 GeV. We identify two possible scenaria for gamma-ray emission from this source. One possibility is that emission originates from the base of relativistic outflow from the active nucleus, as in the BL Lacs and FR I type radio galaxies. Otherwise gamma-ray photons could be produced at the bow shock formed in result of fast motion of the galaxy through the intracluster medium. Le programme " Des systèmes médicaux pluriels de recours non conventionnels pour les personnes atteintes de cancer " développé par une dizaine de chercheurs répartis sur cinq sites utilise une approche socio-anthropologique comparative entre trois pays (France, Belgique, Suisse). La notion de " non conventionnel ", ou celles utilisées couramment pour désigner les mêmes recours - médecine " douces ", " alternatives ", " parallèles", " holistiques ", " traditionnelles ", " non orthodoxes ", etc. - utilisent toutes des terminologies qui soulignent des oppositions bipolaires avec une référence et des normes. Ce système de référence se définit lui-même de " conventionnel ", d' "orthodoxe ", de " scientifique ", de " légitime " ou d' " officiel ", et qui peut être identifié comme agressif (par opposition à médecine douce) ou plutôt d'invasif, de parcellaire et de sectorisé (par opposition à une approche holistique du corps et de la personne), et dont les pratiques et les paradigmes jugés non satisfaisants sont source de recherche d'autres conceptions du corps (alternatives, parallèles).

Abstract

Context: Part of the very high energy $��$-ray radiation coming from extragalactic sources is absorbed through the pair production process on the extragalactic background light photons. Extragalactic magnetic fields alter the trajectories of these cascade pairs and, in turn, convert cosmic background photons to gamma-ray energies by inverse Compton scattering. These secondary photons can form an extended halo around bright VHE sources. Aims: We searched for an extended emission around the bright blazars Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 using the MAGIC telescope data. Methods: If extended emission is present, the angular distribution of reconstructed gamma-ray arrival directions around the source is broader than for a point-like source. In the analysis of a few tens of hours of observational data taken from Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 we used a newly developed method that provides better angular resolution. This method is based on the usage of multidimensional decision trees. Comparing the measured shapes of angular distributions with those expected from a point-like source one can detect or constrain possible extended emission around the source. We also studied the influence of different types of systematic errors on the shape of the distribution of reconstructed gamma-ray arrival directions for a point source. Results: We present upper limits for an extended emission calculated for both sources for various source extensions and emission profiles. We discuss possible constraints on the extragalactic magnetic fields strength. We obtain upper limits on the extended emission around the Mrk~421 (Mrk~501) on the level of < 5% (< 4%) of the Crab Nebula flux above the energy threshold of 300 GeV. Abstract

We show that images of TeV blazars in the GeV energy band should contain, along with point-like sources, degree-scale jet-like extensions. These GeV extensions are the result of electromagnetic cascades initiated by TeV gamma-rays interacting with extragalactic background light and the deflection of the cascade electrons/positrons in extragalactic magnetic fields (EGMF). Using Monte-Carlo simulations, we study the spectral and timing properties of the degree-scale extensions in simulated GeV band images of TeV blazars. We show that the brightness profile of such degree-scale extensions can be used to infer the lightcurve of the primary TeV gamma-ray source over the past 1e7 yr, i.e. over a time scale comparable to the life-time of the parent active galactic nucleus. This implies that the degree-scale jet-like GeV emission could be detected not only near known active TeV blazars, but also from "TeV blazar remnants", whose central engines were switched off up to ten million years ago. Since the brightness profile of the GeV "jets" depends on the strength and the structure of the EGMF, their observation provides additionally information about the EGMF., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

HIP 41378 f is a temperate $9.2\pm0.1 R_{\oplus}$ planet with period of 542.08 days and an extremely low density of $0.09\pm0.02$ g cm$^{-3}$. It transits the bright star HIP 41378 (V=8.93), making it an exciting target for atmospheric characterization including transmission spectroscopy. HIP 41378 was monitored photometrically between the dates of 2019 November 19 and November 28. We detected a transit of HIP 41378 f with NGTS, just the third transit ever detected for this planet, which confirms the orbital period. This is also the first ground-based detection of a transit of HIP 41378 f. Additional ground-based photometry was also obtained and used to constrain the time of the transit. The transit was measured to occur 1.50 hours earlier than predicted. We use an analytic transit timing variation (TTV) model to show the observed TTV can be explained by interactions between HIP 41378 e and HIP 41378 f. Using our TTV model, we predict the epochs of future transits of HIP 41378 f, with derived transit centres of T$_{C,4} = 2459355.087^{+0.031}_{-0.022}$ (May 2021) and T$_{C,5} = 2459897.078^{+0.114}_{-0.060}$ (Nov 2022)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters. 6 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

International audience; Pyrite (FeS 2), arsenopyrite (FeAsS) and löllingite (FeAs 2) are exceptional gold concentrators on Earth; yet the exact redox and structural state of this "invisible" gold and the forces driving its intake and release by these minerals remain highly controversial. Here we applied high resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy to Au-bearing pyrite and iron sulfarsenides from hydrothermal deposits and their synthetic analogues. We show that Au preferentially enters octahedral Fe structural sites [Au(As,S) 6 ] enriched in As, by forming respectively [AuAs 1-3 S 5-3 ], [AuAs 3 S 3 ⋯AuAs 6 ] and [AuAs 6 ] atomic units in arsenian pyrite (>0.1-1.0 wt. % As), arsenopyrite and löllingite, implying a formal oxidation state of Au II in the minerals. In contrast, in As-poor pyrite, Au is dominantly chemisorbed as [Au I S 2 ] moieties in much lower concentrations. Combined with experimental data on Au mineral-fluid partitioning, our findings imply a universal control exerted by arsenic on gold incorporation in iron sulfides and sulfarsenides via coupled Au-As redox reactions. These reactions account for the observed variations in invisible gold contents in the minerals from different hydrothermal deposit types and enable quantitative prediction of iron sulfarsenide ability in controlling gold concentration and distribution in hydrothermal systems.

Abstract

International audience; A large number of methodological procedures and experimental conditions are reported to describe the masticatory process. However, similar terms are sometimes employed to describe different methodologies. Standardisation of terms is essential to allow comparisons among different studies. This article was aimed to provide a consensus concerning the terms, definitions and technical methods generally reported when evaluating masticatory function objectively and subjectively. The consensus is based on the results from discussions and consultations among world-leading researchers in the related research areas. Advantages, limitations and relevance of each method are also discussed. The present consensus provides a revised framework of standardised terms to improve the consistent use of masticatory terminology and facilitate further investigations on masticatory function analysis. In addition, this article also outlines various methods used to evaluate the masticatory process and their advantages and disadvantages in order to help researchers to design their experiments.

Abstract

We explore potential of current and next-generation gamma-ray telescopes for the detection of weak magnetic fields in the intergalactic medium. We demonstrate that using two complementary techniques, observation of extended emission around point sources and observation of time delays in gamma-ray flares, one would be able to probe most of the cosmologically and astrophysically interesting part of the "magnetic field strength" vs. "correlation length" parameter space. This implies that gamma-ray observations with Fermi and ground-based Cherenkov telescopes will allow to (a) strongly constrain theories of the origin of magnetic fields in galaxies and galaxy clusters and (b) discover, constrain or rule out the existence of weak primordial magnetic field generated at different stages of evolution of the Early Universe., Comment: 15 pages

Abstract

We present the results of Monte-Carlo simulations of three-dimensional electromagnetic cascade initiated by interactions of the multi-TeV gamma-rays with the cosmological infrared/optical photon background in the intergalactic medium. Secondary electrons in the cascade are deflected by the intergalactic magnetic fields before they scatter on CMB photons. This leads to extended 0.1-10 degree scale emission at multi-GeV and TeV energies around extragalactic sources of very-high-energy gamma-rays. The morphology of the extended emission depends, in general, on the properties of magnetic fields in the intergalactic medium. Using Monte-Carlo simulated data sets, we demonstrate that the decrease of the size of extended source with the increase of energy allows to measure weak magnetic fields with magnitudes in the range from < 1e-16 G to 1e-12 G if they exist in the voids of the Large Scale Structure., 11 pages, 8 figures
