Background: Botulinum neurotoxin injections are the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures, but conventional blind injection for glabellar wrinkles remains to have some limitations. Aims: We intend to directly inject botulinum neurotoxin into the glabella complex guided by real time ultrasound. We aim to propose a more efficient and safer botulinum neurotoxin injection strategy for glabellar wrinkles. Methods: A total of 40 subjects with moderate to severe glabellar lines were enrolled in this study to receive botulinum neurotoxin injection, either through ultrasound‐guided real time injection or conventional blind injection. Facial Wrinkle Scale (ranging from 0 = none to 3 = severe) and inter‐brow distance (from 3D scanned face images) were used to evaluate the glabellar wrinkles improvement. Paired t test and two‐sample t test were performed to analyze the within‐group and between‐group differences. Results: The wrinkle score reduction was significant (p < 0.0001) immediately after the injection in ultrasound‐guided injection group, but not in blind injection group (p = 0.163). Ultrasound‐guided injection also showed a higher performance of wrinkle score reduction and more effective inter‐brow distance increase over blind injection at Day 0 (p < 0.0001), Day 1 (p < 0.0001), Day 21 (p < 0.01) and Day 35 (p < 0.01) after initial treatment. Conclusions: The results of the study confirmed that botulinum neurotoxin injection for glabellar wrinkles under ultrasound guidance achieves quicker onset of action and better final outcomes compared to conventional blind injection. Introduction: The nasal region plays a pivotal role in both facial esthetics and functionality. The use of volumizing fillers has emerged as a potential means to enhance nasal appearance. Preliminary findings from cadaveric studies have highlighted potential risks associated with deeper needle injection, leading to cartilage damage and lateral migration of filler material. Understanding the subcutaneous tissue depth is crucial to prevent such complications and ensure safe filler placement guided by anatomical knowledge. Methods: This study aimed to employ ultrasonographic assessment to precisely measure the depth of soft tissue in the nasal area. Fifty‐two participants without prior nasal surgery or filler injections underwent detailed ultrasonographic evaluation, focusing on seven key anatomical points: Glabellar, Sellion, Rhinion, between Rhinion and Pronasal, Pronasal, between Pronasal and Subnasal, and Subnasal. Results: The ultrasonographic observation revealed varying depths of subcutaneous tissue across these points: Glabellar (4.11 ± 0.79), Sellion (5.21 ± 0.97), Rhinion (2.02 ± 0.74), Rhinion to Pronasal midpoint (6.45 ± 3.1), Pronasal (9.5 ± 2.2), between Pronasal and Subnasal (8.8 ± 0.8), and Subnasal (8.5 ± 0.5). Discussion: The discussion underscores the significance of understanding subcutaneous tissue depth in guiding needle length and approach angles during filler injections. Purpose: To investigate the relationship between prostatic urethral angle (PUA) and the development of surgical capsule calculi (SCC) within the prostate, and to examine the presence and impact of intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP). Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 90 patients who underwent radical prostatectomy, with preoperative assessments using both transrectal ultrasound of the prostate (TRUS) and magnetic resonance imaging. Patients were divided into groups with and without SCC and further categorized into type 1 and type 2 stones based on the location and severity of the calculi. Statistical analysis included chi-square and independent sample t-tests, with p<0.05 considered significant. Results: Of the patients, 82.2% were diagnosed with SCC. No significant difference in PUA was found between patients with and without SCC. However, a notable disparity in IPP presence was observed, suggesting an inverse correlation with SCC development. Additionally, no significant differences were identified when comparing the two types of SCC based on PUA and IPP measurements. Conclusions: The presence of IPP exhibited an inverse relationship with SCC, suggesting diminished urine flow pressure over the prostatic urethra may reduce the likelihood of SCC formation. However, no direct association between PUA and the presence or severity of SCC was identified. The purpose of this research was to characterise the echogenicity of the different structures within the scrotal bag in rams. Three studies that included 43 rams were conducted. Ultrasound sections (US) were made with the Mindray® equipment. It was found that pubertal males showed greater echogenicity (P<0.05) in testes and the pampiniform plexus, whereas prepubertal males (P<0.05) - in the epididymis and in the right pampiniform plexus. Rams in mating showed the highest echogenicity values (P<0.05). In non-mating animals, the highest values were found in the epididymis (P<0.05). Rams with injuries presented higher echogenicity in testes (P<0.05). In pampiniform plexuses, males without injuries demonstrated the highest values (P<0.05). A high and positive correlation (P<0.0001) was found between the evaluated variables, specifically the right cranial longitudinal (RCL), right proximal transverse (RPT), right medial transverse (RMT), right distal transverse (RDT) measures. Echotexture in rams was affected by age, presence of injuries and sexual activity. Ultrasound is used for peripheral intravenous (PIV) cannulation in patients with difficult landmark-guided IV access in the Emergency Department. Distal-to-proximal application of an Esmarch bandage on the target limb has been suggested as a method for increasing vein size and ease of cannulation. This study was a single-blinded crossover randomized controlled trial comparing basilic vein size under ultrasound with use of an Esmarch bandage in addition to standard IV tourniquet ("tourniquet + Esmarch") compared to use of a standard IV tourniquet alone. Participant discomfort with the tourniquet + Esmarch was also compared to that with standard IV tourniquet alone. Twenty-two healthy volunteers were used to measure basilic vein size with and without the Esmarch bandage. There was no difference in basilic vein size between the two groups, with a mean diameter of 6.0 ± 1.5 mm in the tourniquet + Esmarch group and 6.0 ± 1.4 mm in the control group, p = 0.89. Discomfort score (from 0 to 10) was different between the groups, with a mean discomfort score of 2.1 in the tourniquet + Esmarch group and 1.1 in the standard IV tourniquet alone group (p < 0.001). Purpose: The cross-sectional area (CSA) of the cervical vagus nerve (VN), as assessed through ultrasonography, might be linked to autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Hypertension is the primary factor associated with cerebral white matter lesions (WMLs), but there is also evidence of a connection with autonomic nervous system dysfunction. However, the associations between WMLs and VN size are unclear. Our objective was to investigate the associations between WMLs and VN size in patients with vascular risk factors. Methods: The CSA of the VN was evaluated using carotid ultrasonography in patients with a history of stroke (acute or chronic) and comorbidities (n = 196, 70.2 ± 12.7 years). Common carotid artery (CCA) intima-media thickness and interadventitial diameter (IAD) were also measured. The severity of the WMLs was assessed by the Fazekas classification and Scheltens' scale. Results: The CSA of the right VN (2.08 ± 0.65 mm2) was significantly greater than that of the CSA of the left VN (1.56 ± 0.44 mm2) (P < 0.001). Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that older age, hypertension, increased right CCA IAD, and decreased CSA of the right VN (standardized partial regression coefficient [β] − 0.226; P < 0.001) were independently associated with the severity of WMLs (Scheltens' scale). A decreased CSA of the left VN was also associated with the severity of WMLs (β = − 0.239; P < 0.001). Conclusion: VN size determined via ultrasonography was associated with the severity of WMLs. Purpose: Repetitive Peripheral Magnetic Stimulation [rPMS] is a non-invasive tool that has a potential therapeutic role in many musculoskeletal disorders. We aimed to demonstrate the therapeutic efficacy of high frequency [rPMS] in acute Idiopathic Facial Nerve Palsy [IFP]. And to study the role of neuromuscular ultrasonography in acute idiopathic facial palsy. Methods: Forty patients, aged above 18 years, diagnosed with unilateral acute [within 7 days of onset] idiopathic facial palsy were enrolled and randomly divided into intervention group [20 patients] and control group. Both groups underwent clinical examination, assessment of facial nerve disability by House-Brackmann grading [HBG] score and Facial Disability Index [FDI] score, ultrasonography of facial nerve of both normal and affected sides at baseline and after 6 weeks, medical treatment and routine rehabilitation therapy. The intervention group were subjected to 10 sessions of high frequency r PMS [5/week for 2 successive weeks] on the affected side. Results: Both [HBG] and [FDI] showed more significant improvement in the intervention group in comparison to the control group after 6 weeks follow up. Ultrasonographic measures of facial nerve in the affected side were significantly larger than non-affected side at baseline. However, those measures significantly decreased after 6 weeks follow up. Surprisingly, the intervention group showed more significant decrease in facial nerve dimeter at proximal portion [without sheath] in comparison to control group. Conclusion: high frequency r PMS have an adjuvant role in treatment of acute idiopathic facial palsy. Also, ultrasonography has beneficial role in evaluation and prognosis of [IFP]. Purpose: In correlation with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), this study attempts to assess the effectiveness of the diagnostic of ultrasonography (US) features and shear wave elastography (SWE) in determining the different causes of heel pain. Materials and Methods: 55 heels with a mean age of 38.33 ± 10.8 were included in the study (10 control cases and 41 cases, 4 of which had bilateral heel pain). There were 23 female cases (56.1%) and 18 male cases (43.95%). Examinations using shear wave elastography (SWE) and ultrasound (US) were done in different positions. MRI and the obtained data were correlated. Results: When used to diagnose different heel pain causes, ultrasound demonstrated great sensitivity and specificity. SWE demonstrated a good correlation with MRI findings and enhanced the ultrasound's diagnostic precision in identifying plantar fasciitis early on (increased accuracy from 88.9 to 93.33% with 100% sensitivity and 83.3% specificity) and Achilles tendinopathy (increased accuracy from 88.9 to 97.8 with 94.7% sensitivity and 100% specificity). Conclusion: In summary, we concluded that heel pain can be efficiently examined by both ultrasound (US) and shear wave elastography (SWE) with the former being used as the primary effective tool and the latter being done to increase diagnostic accuracy. We also concluded that SWE improved the ultrasound's diagnostic precision in identifying patients with early plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinopathy and showed a robust relationship with clinical outcomes, enhancing patient evaluation and follow-up. Background: Rugby is a sport involving a great number of shoulder collisions. Traumatic stress of the shoulder can weaken the static stabilizers and promote major injuries as dislocation or full-thickness tears of the rotator cuff. The goal of this study is to evaluate the clinical and ultrasonographic dominant shoulder factures in a group of amateur rugby players, with no history of shoulder injuries, and to compare them with those of a control group. Methods: 52 male subjects join in the study: 26 amateur rugby players and 26 subjects, which did not practice rugby or competitive sport. Clinical history was obtained from all subjects, followed by dominant shoulder physical and ultrasonographic exams. Results: Rugby players showed a higher prevalence of positive clinical test, suggesting subacromial impingement than control group (p = 0.01). Among rugby group, five players (19,2%) showed positive test for radiculopathy (p = 0,02), and ten players (73,1%) reported shoulder pain needing pain-reliever drugs at list one time in the last six months (p = 0.001). In rugby group, ultrasound exams showed 23,1% degenerative changes and 30,8% tendon calcifications in supraspinatus tendons (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Uninjured dominant shoulder of rugby players shows higher prevalence of clinical and ultrasound changes compare to control. Some rugby players without history of cervical symptoms show positive clinical test of cervical radiculopathy. Clinical and ultrasonographic monitoring of the shoulder can play a role in prevention and knowledge of silent shoulder damage in these athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ultrasound specialists face a substantial issue with work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), characterized by occupation-related pain, reaching an estimated frequency of up to 90.5%. The type and location of pain vary depending on the sonographers specialty and the specific anatomical areas being examined. Our study aimed to assess the prevalence and intensity of pain among Polish doctors from various specialties conducting ultrasound examinations. The study has been performed between July and December 2023, involving 90 participants (51.9% women) actively practicing ultrasound diagnostics. The data collection process utilized a structured questionnaire developed by the researchers for this study. The questionnaire covered personal factors, including gender and age, and work-related aspects like workplace, specialty, sonography experience, and the types of examinations conducted. Statistical analysis involved both descriptive statistics and correlation analysis. The age distribution ranged from 26 to 74 years, with mean (SD) of 43.1 (12.2) years. The leading specialties among physicians were radiology (22.2%) and internal medicine (22.2%). Among all physicians, 65.6% reported pain during or after ultrasound scans, with a mean (SD) pain intensity of 6.17 (2) in a 1–10 scale. The analysis indicated no correlation between age and gender and the occurrence of discomfort. WMSDs pose a significant risk to Polish sonographers, especially those specializing in vascular surgery, general surgery and obstetrics and gynecology specialties. Skeletal muscle dysfunction is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Of interest is the concept of "muscle quality," of which measures include ultrasound-derived echo intensity (EI). Alternative parameters of muscle texture, for example, gray level of co-occurrence matrix (GCLM), are available and may circumvent limitations in EI. The validity of EI is limited in humans, particularly in chronic diseases. This study aimed to investigate the associations between ultrasound-derived parameters of muscle texture with MRI. Images of the thigh were acquired using a 3 Tesla MRI scanner. Quantification of muscle (contractile), fat (non-contractile), and miscellaneous (connective tissue, fascia) components were estimated. Anatomical rectus femoris cross-sectional area was measured using B-mode 2D ultrasonography. To assess muscle texture, first (i.e., EI)- and second (i.e., GLCM)-order statistical analyses were performed. Fourteen participants with CKD were included (age: 58.0 ± 11.9 years, 50% male, eGFR: 27.0 ± 7.4 ml/min/1.73m2, 55% Stage 4). Higher EI was associated with lower muscle % (quadriceps: β = −.568, p =.034; hamstrings: β = −.644, p =.010). Higher EI was associated with a higher fat % in the hamstrings (β = −.626, p =.017). A higher angular second moment from GLCM analysis was associated with greater muscle % (β =.570, p =.033) and lower fat % (β = −.534, p =.049). A higher inverse difference moment was associated with greater muscle % (β =.610, p =.021 and lower fat % (β = −.599, p =.024). This is the first study to investigate the associations between ultrasound-derived parameters of muscle texture with MRI. Introduction. According to the current Parkinson's Disease (PD) pathogenesis hypotheses, the vagus nerve (VN) is essential for disease development. It has been identified as a main entry point for misfolded a-synuclein to the central nervous system, and surgical vagotomy appears to limit disease progress both in animal models and in humans. A recent approach tried to assess VN size in PD patients via neck ultrasonography, but the clinical value of this method is yet to be established. State of the art. A systematic search of the MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was conducted, and 12 case--control studies were included. Meta-analysis revealed a modest reduction in VN size in PD [effect size -- 0.79 SD (95% CI [-1.34, -0.25] p = 0.004)]. The atrophy was more pronounced on the right side, and the nerve was smaller in females. In PD patients, VN reduction correlated with cardiac parasympathetic function decline and with advances in motor ratings. The discrimination potential for PD diagnosis, and any association with other non-motor domains, remains unclear. Clinical implications. VN atrophy in PD could be detected by ultrasound imaging. However, the clinical significance of this phenomenon has yet to be clarified. Size reduction is not readily apparent and is individually variable. However, it may be considered a promising means to improve early PD diagnosis and the recognition of autonomic dysfunction. Future directions. With more extensive research, VN sonography could provide useful evidence regarding disease origins. Objectives: Urinary incontinence is pelvic floor muscles dysfunction, most often caused by a weakening of their strength. There are no guidelines on how to evaluate pelvic floor muscle function. Palpation is the most popular method of assessing pelvic floor muscle function, but it is subjective. The aim of the study was to review the objective methods used in the assessment of pelvic floor muscle function in women with urinary incontinence. Material and methods: A systematic literature review of the PubMed database was performed using the following keywords: "Pelvic Floor"[mh] AND ("Pelvic Floor Disorders"[mh] OR "Urinary Incontinence"[mh]). The search was limited to English-language articles published from 2011 to 2021. Eligible were interventional studies in which the pelvic floor muscle function of women with urinary incontinence was assessed using quantitative tools. Methods that cannot be used in the clinic were excluded from the analysis. Results: Fifty-two articles were included in the analysis and five unique methods assessing the function of pelvic floor muscle were distinguished: manometry, electromyography (EMG), ultrasonography (USG), dynamometry, accelerometry. Conclusions: Manometry, EMG and USG are the most common objective methods of assessing pelvic floor muscle function. When taking measurements, it is important to choose the right position of the patient. The use of objective tools to assess the function of the pelvic floor muscle and obtaining quantitative and/or qualitative data allows us to precisely diagnose and monitor the treatment and rehabilitation progress. Background: Low back pain is a globally prevalent musculoskeletal issue. Repetitive peripheral magnetic stimulation (rPMS) is emerging as a promising modality for managing musculoskeletal pain, while ultrasound-guided lumbar facet/multifidus injections are a potential therapeutic option for low back pain. This study explores the feasibility of combining these two treatments for managing low back pain. Materials and Methods: Ultrasound-guided injections were administered using 5 mL of 50% dextrose and 5 mL of 1% lidocaine. Bilateral injections targeted the L4/L5 and L5/S1 facet joints with 1 mL at each site, and the remaining 8 mL was distributed over the multifidus muscles using peppering techniques. Following injections, rPMS therapy was conducted with the TESLA Stym® device, targeting the bilateral lumbosacral region over 12 sessions. Pain intensity was measured using the visual analog scale (VAS), and disability was assessed with the Oswestry disability index (ODI) at baseline, after six sessions, and after 12 sessions of rPMS. Results: Three participants were enrolled. Baseline VAS and ODI scores were 8.33 ± 0.29 cm and 49.63 ± 1.28%, respectively. After six rPMS sessions, VAS and ODI scores changed to 4.33 ± 3.75 cm and 21.48 ± 19.42%, respectively. After 12 sessions, VAS decreased to 0.83 ± 1.44 cm and ODI to 5.19 ± 8.98%. Significant differences were observed between baseline and final assessments. Conclusion: Combining ultrasound-guided lumbar facet/multifidus injections with rPMS shows promise for treating low back pain. Introduction: The primary clinical manifestation of venous thrombosis is discomfort in the lower extremities. Some early Parkinson's disease (PD) patients feel discomfort in the lower limbs. Venous thrombosis can risk lives by causing pulmonary embolism. This study examines the incidence of DVT in early PD patients and its correlation with different clinical and lab features. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 117 patients with early-stage PD. Ultrasonography was employed to detect the presence of DVT. Factors such as age, gender, body mass index, lifestyle habits (smoking and drinking), medical history (hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, and tumor), and other lab tests linked to thrombosis were analyzed. Results: In 117 patients, 11 (9.4%) had DVT, while 106 (90.6%) did not. There were no significant differences in gender, BMI, habits, medical history, or other thrombosis-related tests between both groups. However, DVT patients were older with higher d-dimer levels. They also showed an increased right substantia nigra ultrasound echo area, higher HY grades, higher UPDRS 3 scores, less improvement in UPDRS 3 scores and levodopa response. Discussion: The primary risk factors for lower extremity venous thrombosis were found to be age, d-dimer levels, and low-dose levodopa. Therefore, for elderly patients with early-stage PD, it is crucial to conduct d-dimer and lower extremity vascular ultrasound tests. Difficult airway is a major life-threatening complication during induction of general anesthesia. In thyroid surgery, intubation could be complicated by airway distortion because of the enlarged thyroid gland. Recently, ultrasonography has been proposed as a potential modality for airway assessment and management. The aim of the study is to evaluate ultrasound-based measurement of airway parameters in 13 selected patients with compressive goiter and tracheal deviation scheduled for thyroidectomy before induction of general anesthesia. Specifically, we detected the distance between the skin and retro-isthmic trachea (DSRIT) and the distance between the sub isthmic trachea and the carotid artery (DCSIT) at the side of the dominant lobe. Primary breast Burkitt lymphoma (PB-BL) is an exceedingly rare form of primary breast lymphoma. Ultrasonography is the preferred modality for diagnosing breast diseases; however, the ultrasonic features of Burkitt lymphoma have rarely been reported. Herein, we report a case of ultrasonically diagnosed bilateral PB-BL in a lactating patient and present a literature review. A 28-year-old female patient experienced bilateral breast engorgement starting more than a month after childbirth. At three months postpartum, the patient experienced extreme bilateral breast engorgement, with the skin appearing dark purple and jaundiced. Based on the imaging diagnosis, pathological, immunohistochemical, and molecular biological findings, she was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma involves bilateral breasts, right adrenal glands, uterus, and multiple bones. After 4 cycles of combination chemotherapy, the tumor basically disappeared, and then after autologous stem cell transplantation and one cycle of combination chemotherapy, the patient is generally in good condition and is under follow-up. We found that the ultrasonic characteristics of PB-BL are different from those of common breast cancer or lactation mastitis. PB-BL lesions are often multiple, large masses, and even involve the whole breast. The characteristic reticular structures are common in lesions, and irregular hyperechoic masses can be seen around it. The mass has abundant peripheral and internal blood flow signals, but internal calcification and attenuated posterior echoes of masses are rarely observed. Thus, the ultrasonic features of breast Burkitt lymphoma are somewhat specific and understanding these features is conducive to its early identification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Veins of the lower extremity can be categorized into three hierarchically ordered groups: the epifascial, the interfascial, and the deep ones. In the past, the interfascial veins, e.g., the great saphenous vein, were categorized as superficial veins. But nowadays, experts recommend regarding these veins as a separate group because of their unique topography and clinical relevance. In order to better understand the venous anatomy of the lower limbs, which is highly variable, one should also comprehend their embryological development. Venous embryogenesis in the lower limb consists of three stages. During the first stage the primitive fibular vein is the main vein of the extremity. During the second stage it is replaced by the axial vein and finally by the femoral vein. In some adult individuals this embryonic or fetal venous anatomy is still present. Unfortunately, current anatomical textbooks and atlases, as well as traditional cadaver dissections, are not very useful regarding these issues. Therefore, undergraduate teaching of anatomy can be challenging. New educational tools, such as ultrasonography, seem indispensable to teach the anatomy of these veins properly. Background: Lower extremity bone stress injuries (BSIs) are common among athletes who participate in high-impact activities. Conventional imaging is limited in assessing healing of BSIs. Hypothesis: Serial ultrasonography (US) can identify changes in appearance of lower extremity BSIs over time that can be correlated with symptoms and return to exercise/sport. Study Design: Cohort observational study. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Methods: Adults 18 to 50 years old with a recent exercise-associated BSI of distal tibia/fibula or metatarsals diagnosed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were enrolled. US was performed every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. The sonographic appearance (soft tissue edema, periosteal reaction, hyperemia on power Doppler, callus) was correlated with the numerical rating scale (NRS) for pain and ability to return to sport/exercise. Results: A total of 30 patients were enrolled (mean age, 35.3 ± 7.7 years; 21 [70.0%] female). The tibia was most frequently affected (n = 15, 50.0%), followed by metatarsals (n = 14, 46.7%) and fibula (n = 1, 3.3%). At week 4, 25 of 30 (83.3%) had at least 1 US finding associated with the BSI. The degree of hyperemia was correlated with NRS at weeks 4 and 6 (Spearman correlations [ρ] 0.45 [0.09, 0.69] and 0.42 [0.07, 0.67], respectively), as well as return to sport/exercise at week 6 (ρ -0.45 [-0.68, -0.09]). US soft tissue edema was also correlated with NRS at week 6 (ρ 0.38 [0.02, 0.65]). Conclusion: Serial US of lower extremity BSIs can provide objective measures of healing. US findings were correlated with clinical outcomes at multiple timepoints. Clinical Relevance: US may have advantages over conventional imaging for monitoring healing of lower extremity BSIs. Further research is needed to better understand the prognostic value of these sonographic indicators of BSI healing and role in assessing readiness for return to sport/exercise. Objectives: To detect ultrasonographic anatomical alterations in all the skin layers in patients with vitiligo. Methods: A prospective observational color Doppler ultrasound study was performed in nonsegmental face and/or neck vitiligo patients without a history of previous treatments. Two sites, a lesional area and a contralateral clinically healthy region, were ultrasonographically studied and compared in the same patient. All cases were studied in high‐frequency (24 MHz) and ultra‐high‐frequency (70 MHz) ultrasound devices with the highest axial spatial resolution available in the market. Demographic data of the sample, ultrasound grayscale, and color Doppler features were recorded and analyzed. Results: Ten patients met the study criteria (60% females; mean age 49 years). All cases presented ultrasonographic undulation of the epidermis in the affected zones vs 50% in the healthy control regions, being more prominent in the vitiligo areas. Eighty percent demonstrated intense hypoechoic thin plaques in the upper dermis (subepidermal). All vitiligo areas presented thickening and hypoechogenicity of the regional hair follicles and/or pilosebaceous units. Ninety percent showed prominent sebaceous glands, and 20% demonstrated a hypoechoic cap surrounding the sebaceous glands in the lesional areas. Dermal hypervascularity was detected in 100% of the affected regions and 40% of the clinically healthy areas. Conclusion: Ultrasound can identify subclinical inflammatory cutaneous patterns in the epidermis, dermis, hair follicles, pilosebaceous units, and sebaceous glands in vitiligo. Introduction: Patients with intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMNs) exhibit a high incidence of pancreatic cancer. An IPMN presents as a pancreatic cystic lesion (PCL). Artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to enhance ultrasonographic images. We retrospectively evaluated the utility of AI‐assisted ultrasonography in terms of PCL detection. Methods: In total, 969 patients who underwent artificial narrow intelligence‐assisted transabdominal ultrasound examinations (AI group) were compared with 943 patients who underwent non‐AI‐assisted examinations (control group). The morphological changes and the frequencies of newly detected PCLs were compared between the groups. Results: The PCL detection rate was significantly higher in the AI group than in the control group (1.25 ± 0.36 and 0.21 ± 0.15%, respectively; p =.008). AI‐assisted ultrasound evaluation was independently associated with enhanced PCL detection (odds ratio: 5.83, 95% confidence interval: 1.29–26.29, p =.02). PCLs smaller than 8 mm and all PCLs in the pancreatic tail were detected in the AI group. PCL morphological changes were more common in the AI group than in the control group (63.6 ± 14.5 and 16.7 ± 15.2%, respectively; p =.04). Conclusion: AI‐assisted transabdominal ultrasonography enhances the PCL detection rate. The use of AI is likely to increase the IPMN detection rate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives PsA and gout are two prevalent rheumatic diseases, that can be associated as part of a rheumatism known as 'Psout'. Both conditions are associated with cardiovascular (CV) risk, thus their co-occurrence could have significant implications for the management of CV risks and patient care. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of gout within a PsA patient cohort and, consequently, to identify factors associated with this pathological association. Methods This is an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional, single-center study, including patients diagnosed with PsA. Demographic, clinical, biological and imaging data were collected. We identified the proportion of patients simultaneously affected by PsA and gout and compared characteristics between those with and without gout. Results The prevalence of gout among PSA patients was 9.8% (12/122), with a prevalence of 23% for asymptomatic hyperuricemia and 7.4% presenting with specific US signs of gout. Significant associated factors in the univariate analysis included weight, hypertension, diabetes, certain medications (diuretics, aspirin, lipid-lowering agents), impaired renal function, elevated fasting blood glucose, lipid abnormalities and specific US signs of gout. Conclusion Our study has described the existence of patients simultaneously affected by PsA and gout ('Psout'). Background and Objectives: Fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) is an effective and relatively safe technique in perioperative pain management for hip surgery. However, blockade of the obturator nerve (ON) using this technique remains controversial. This study aimed to compare dye spread patterns and nerve involvement in the suprainguinal FICB (S-FICB) and infrainguinal FICB (I-FICB) approaches using different volumes of dye. Materials and Methods: Following randomization, 6 S-FICBs and 6 I-FICBs were performed on the left or right sides of 6 unembalmed cadavers. For each block, 30 mL or 60 mL of dye solution was injected. The extent of dye spreading and the staining pattern in the lumbar plexus branches were investigated using anatomical dissection. Results: Twelve injections were successfully completed. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (LFCN) and femoral nerve (FN) were consistently stained in all injections. Extended dye spread toward lumbar plexus branches was observed volume-dependently in S-FICBs. However, I-FICBs with an increased volume only showed dye spreading in the caudad direction limited to within the fascia iliaca. When 30 mL of dye was used, the ON was not stained with either approach. A stained ON was only observed in S-FICBs when 60 mL of dye was used. Conclusions: In this cadaveric evaluation, the ON was not stained in either FICB approach with the volume of injectate commonly used in clinical practice. The S-FICBs but not I-FICBs using a high volume of injectate resulted in extended spreading to the lumbar plexus branches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study aimed to investigate pathological epidemiology and molecular confirmation of Ehrlichia canis among pet dogs in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, a state in eastern India. A total of 178 dogs were screened for Ehrlichiosis based on history, clinical signs, blood, and buffy coat smear examination, resulting in only 56 dogs (31.46%) screening positive. The epidemiological study recorded a non-significant (p ≥ 0.05) increase in incidences among male dogs (68%), German Shepherds (25%), dogs more than 20 kg body weight (75%), in the summer months (55%), and dogs housed in pukka houses with exposure to the outside (59%). The majority of the infected dogs had a history of tick infestation (79%) at some point in their lives. Clinical signs showed non-typical manifestations like fever, lethargy, diarrhoea, epistaxis, hind limb edema, and corneal opacity. Haematological studies revealed anaemia and thrombocytopenia along with neutrophilia with relative lymphopenia and monocytosis. A decreasing trend was observed in the levels of total protein and albumin, with an increase in the levels of globulin, alanine aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine. The ultrasonography studies revealed hepatosplenomegaly along with hyper-echogenicity in various organs. Proteinuria and haematuria were consistent, along with the presence of bile salts in the urine of affected dogs. Molecular confirmation from n-type PCR data using Ehrlichia-specific primers targeting the p28 gene (843 bp) was done, and the identified gene sequences submitted to NCBI databases have accession numbers OQ383671-OQ383674 and OP886674-OP886677. The present study is aimed at assessing the presence and prevalence of subclinical entheseal changes in Psoriasis (PsO) patients using musculoskeletal ultrasonography (US), conjoined with the analysis of possible differences in terms of demographic, clinical, or biological features. We carried out an observational study on 54 patients with PsO and 40 controls. Subclinical enthesopathy, according to OMERACT definitions, was identified in 20 of the psoriasis patients (37.03%), a significantly difference compared to the controls (5 patients; 10.20%). A comparison between US examinations for psoriasis patients and controls indicates that all the examined areas manifested changes in a significantly higher percentage of patients than the controls. The most common structural changes were represented by thickened tendon (85%), calcification (65%), erosions (35%), power Doppler (PD) signal (20%), and bursitis (5%). The difference in mean MASEI (Madrid Sonographic Enthesitis Index) score between the psoriasis and control groups was statistically significant (10.56 + 2.96 vs. 2.9 + 2.20; p < 0.0001). In conclusion, ultrasound is an easily accessible and vital follow-up method for psoriasis patients to enable an early, subclinical detection of entheseal involvement, i.e., the first red-flag sign for a future transition to psoriatic arthritis (PsA). The use of immersive methodologies is a trend in the educational environment, but their outcomes in the teaching–learning process need to be better understood. This study aimed to assess the impact of the educational environment on learning equine distal limb ultrasonography, comparing immersive classroom, traditional classroom, and virtual classroom. A total of 153 veterinary medicine students from the first to the third semester participated in this study. The students were divided into four groups: traditional (n = 22), immersive (n = 100), online (n = 31), and traditional‐immersive (n = 15). The students completed a questionnaire before and immediately after the class. The online group had a lower average gain in correct answers compared to the others (p < 0.01). Regarding student perception, it was observed that the virtual group had the lowest satisfaction score (p < 0.001), and students in the immersive and online environments were more satisfied with the resources used compared to the traditional classroom (p = 0.01). Concluding, in the present study students showed a greater interest in environments associated with technology, and that in‐person modalities resulted in significantly superior learning outcomes compared to online ones. Extranodal intraductal papilloma of the unilateral axillary supernumerary breast is a rare and unusual medical condition. This condition involves the development of a benign tumor, known as a papilloma, in the ducts of supernumerary breast tissue found in the axilla. We report a rare case of extranodal papilloma of an extranodal intraductal papilloma of a unilateral axillary supernumerary breast in a 70-year-old woman, who presented with a right axillary mass. The diagnosis was suspected on imaging and confirmed on anatomical examination. Surgical treatment with good post-treatment outcome.

Teratomas are the most prevalent type of germ cell tumors and usually display benign characteristics. Mature cystic teratomas consist of a varied mixture of mature tissue types that originate from squamous epithelium and skin adnexal structures. It is most commonly found in female gonads. A mature teratoma located in the abdomen of an adult male patient is exceptionally uncommon. In this case, we report a rare case of intra-abdominal mature cystic teratoma in an adult male.

Abstract Background To prospectively evaluate ultrasound backscatter coefficients (BSCs) of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles and compare with Goutallier classification on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods Fifty-six participants had shoulder MRI exams and ultrasound exams of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles. Goutallier MRI grades were determined and BSCs were measured. Group means were compared and the strength of relationships between the measures were determined. Abstract Introduction Musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) is integral to routine clinical diagnostics for musculoskeletal and joint disorders. This study aims to establish and validate a sonography course tailored to undergraduate medical students acquiring MSUS-specific skills at a German university. Methods A blended learning training concept, comprising 24 instruction sessions of 45 min each, was designed based on the current national guidelines of the German Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM). This program was integrated into the clinical phase of the undergraduate students’ medical education. The self-perceived improvement in competency and the effectiveness of the course design were evaluated using a a 7-point Likert scale questionnaire. Objective learning success was evaluated via a written test and a “Direct Observation of Practical Skills” practical exam. Control groups included medical students without MSUS training (control group 1) and doctors who had completed DEGUM-certified basic MSUS courses (control group 2). Both control groups completed the written test, while control group 2 also took the practical final exam. Abstract Background Postoperative pain management remains a significant challenge for patients undergoing posterior urethroplasty (PU). In a previous study, we proposed a novel technique of combined pudendal nerve (PN) and spermatic cord (SC) block to manage pain after PU. The present trial was conducted to test the hypothesis that this technique is effective for pain control after PU and provides longer-lasting analgesia than caudal epidural block (CB). Methods Sixty patients undergoing PU were randomized into two groups: Group NB received combined PN and SC block, and Group CB received CB. General anesthesia with a laryngeal mask was performed. The primary outcome was the postoperative analgesic duration, and the secondary outcomes included the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) scores for pain and the number of patients with different motor scores of the lower limb at 3, 6, 12, and 24 h postoperatively. Results Two patients in Group CB were withdrawn due to block failure. The postoperative analgesic duration was statistically longer in Group NB compared with Group CB (mean difference [95% confidence interval], 115.78 min [17.80, 213.75]; P = 0.021). The NRS scores for pain at 12 and 24 h after surgery were statistically lower in Group NB compared with Group CB. Group NB had statistically more patients with motor score 0 at 3 h postoperatively than Group CB. Conclusions PN combined with SC block is an effective technique for postoperative analgesia in PU. This technique can achieve a longer duration of analgesia and lower pain scores, especially 12 h after surgery, than a CB. Abstract Background Symptomatic heart failure (HF) negatively affects the quantity and quality of skeletal muscles. However, the association between asymptomatic HF and skeletal muscle function remains unclear. We aimed to use ultrasonography to elucidate the association between asymptomatic HF and skeletal muscle function in community-dwelling older adults. Methods This cross-sectional study comprised community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 60 years who could perform activities of daily living independently and had never had symptomatic HF (n = 52, 76.3 ± 6.1 years). The participants were classified into three groups namely, non-HF (n = 26), stage A (n = 19), and stage B (n = 7) according to the HF stage criteria of the American Heart Association /American College of Cardiology /Heart Failure Society of America guideline. Skeletal muscle quantity and quality were assessed using ultrasonography (thickness and echo intensity) of the rectus femoris (RF) and vastus intermedius (VI) muscles. The group effects on muscle thickness and echo intensity in each group were assessed using a multivariate analysis. Results Both muscles consistently demonstrated significant group effects on the thickness and echo intensity. Thicknesses of the RF (p = 0.020) and VI (p = 0.035) were lower in the stage B group than that in the non-HF group. The echo intensities in the RF (p = 0.006) and VI (p = 0.009) were higher in the stage B group than that in the non-HF group. Conclusion Asymptomatic HF negatively associated with the characteristics of skeletal muscle function, as assessed by ultrasonography in community-dwelling older adults. The stage B HF contributes to reduced skeletal muscle function as well as symptomatic HF.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate technical implant errors with CBCT and ultrasonography and to evaluate the success of USG in demonstrating these errors.Method: Two freshly cut sheep heads were obtained. A radiological examination was performed with both CBCT and USG before and after the dental implant placement. 10 implants (2 right, 3 left) were placed to represent a represent normal placement implant and 4 different complications: crestal bone defect, cortical bone perforation, mental foramen perforation, mandibular canal perforation.Results: The implants placed in the normal position without complications could not be visualized by USG in both sheep heads. Perforation areas of implants in the cortical bone were visualized by USG in both samples. The mental foramen could be visualized preoperatively with USG, and the perforations caused by the implants in the mental foramen could also be visualized with USG. In addition, positive findings were obtained by USG in a crestal bone defect. Mandibular canal perforation could not be visualized by USG in both heads.Conclusion: USG is a useful imaging method that can be used to quickly detect technical errors such as cortical perforation, mental foramen perforation, crestal bone loss, and placement outside the bone that occur during implant surgery.Keywords: Cone-beam computed tomography, ultrasonography, dental implant

Importance: The rapidly growing use of ultrasound in South Korea has revolutionized the real-world application of acupuncture, making it a safer, more accurate treatment. However, little is known about the challenges Korean medicine doctors (KMDs) encounter, as well as the procedures and resources necessary for hygienic, safe ultrasound-guided acupuncture. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the purpose, indications, and procedure for ultrasound-guided acupuncture in Korean medicine (KM) practice and the challenges KMDs encounter in using ultrasonography. Methods: Eleven KMDs with expertise in practicing or teaching ultrasonography were consulted in detail. The purpose of ultrasonography in real-world practice, the overall process, resources utilized in ultrasound-guided procedures, and the unaddressed needs of KMDs were investigated. Results: Ultrasound guidance, employed for various diseases in KM practice, is crucial for pharmacopuncture and acupotomy to increase accuracy and safety. Ultrasoundguided acupuncture involves covering the probe, putting on sterile gloves, and scanning with disinfectants, though the exact steps vary among experts. They also suggested that a lack of insurance coverage was a common obstacle for KMDs utilizing ultrasonography. Conclusions and Relevance: Acupuncture with ultrasound guidance has become a prevalent procedure in South Korea. Standard procedure guidelines and insurance coverage for ultrasonography used for acupuncture procedures are essential to ensure safe, accurate procedures.

Abstract Background Post-streptococcal myalgia and myositis are very rare complications of streptococcal infections with group A β-haemolytic streptococci. Data on this condition are scarce and even less is known about findings in clinical imaging. Until today, there are no descriptions of ultrasonographic changes in this condition. Case presentation We present a case of a 31-year-old female patient with immobilizing myalgia of the left outer thigh following a streptococcal upper respiratory tract infection, accompanied with erythemata nodosa on both shins. Laboratory results indicated post-streptococcal myositis since Creatine kinase, Lactate dehydrogenase and Antistreptolysin antibodies were significantly elevated. An ultrasound of the affected vastus medialis of the left quadriceps femoris muscle was performed, which showed a focal increase in muscle echogenicity with loss of architecture and hypervascularisation in Power Doppler Mode. The diagnosis of focal myositis was confirmed with magnetic resonance imaging. The patient’s symptoms as well as the ultrasonographic changes fully resolved under therapy with Ibuprofen and intravenous Ampicillin/Sulbactam. Conclusions This is the first description of ultrasound findings in this rare condition. We conclude that muscular ultrasound is helpful to identify myositis in post-streptococcal myalgia and myositis.

Abstract Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) have recently been applied in various veterinary and medical fields, however, the toxicological evaluations of these NPs in dogs are lacking. Therefore, the current study is designed to assess the impact of exposure to daily subcutaneous (SC) injections of ZnO NPs at different concentrations on various organs of mongrel dogs. Nine dogs were randomly divided into three groups (n = 3 for each) as follows: group (1) served as the control group, whereas groups (2&3) received SC injections of 50 and 100 ppm ZnO NPs (8 and 16 μg/kg bwt), respectively, once/day for 7 days. Our results revealed that ZnO NPs disrupted the oxidant/antioxidant balance in the lungs, liver, and kidneys of dogs in a dose-dependent manner. ZnO NPs induced dose-dependent radiological, ultrasonographical, and histopathological alterations in various organs especially lungs, spleen, liver, and kidneys along with disturbance in both liver and kidney biomarkers levels. Most organs of both ZnO NPs receiving groups displayed strong caspase-3 protein expression. Additionally, it upregulates the transcriptase levels of TNF-α and VEGF, as well as downregulates the antiapoptotic gene IL-10 in lung, kidney, and liver tissue homogenates. It was concluded that the daily SC injections of dogs with ZnO NPs at concentrations of 50 and 100 ppm caused extensive oxidative stress damage in various organs which provoked serious pathological processes such as apoptosis and inflammation.

Abstract Objective To assess the predictive abilities of Doppler‐based resistive index and plasma biomarkers of endothelial cell activation in identifying persistent acute kidney injury (pAKI) among patients with septic shock. Method Patients diagnosed with septic shock were categorized into none AKI (n = 25), transient AKI (tAKI, n = 47), and pAKI (n = 48) groups. Kidney function parameters (urine output, serum creatinine, and serum urea) were measured within the initial 24 h upon intensive care unit (ICU) admission. The Doppler‐based resistive index, and the plasma biomarkers [fractalkine, soluble E‐Selectin (sE‐Selectin), and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule‐1 (sICAM‐1)] were evaluated upon admission to the ICU. Results The predictive capacity of Doppler‐based resistive index for distinguishing pAKI at day 3 from none AKI/tAKI in septic shock patients was moderate, with sensitivity of 47.92% and specificity of 76.39%. Fractalkine levels displayed significant differences across groups and exhibited a favorable predictive ability for pAKI at day 3 (AUC = 0.800), while sE‐Selectin and sICAM‐1 showed moderate predictive abilities (AUC = 0.636 and 0.634, respectively). Comparative analysis of predictive models demonstrated that incorporating kidney function parameters, Doppler‐based resistive index, and plasma biomarkers yielded the highest AUC of 0.903, followed closely by the model utilizing serum creatinine, urine output, and plasma fractalkine, with an AUC of 0.896. Conclusion Integrating kidney function parameters, along with Doppler‐based resistive index and plasma biomarkers of endothelial cell activation, yielded the strongest predictive model for pAKI. Additionally, the combination of serum creatinine, urine output, and plasma fractalkine shows promise in risk assessment and management strategies for pAKI.

Background: The long-term effects of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) on rotator cuff repair are unknown. Objectives: To investigate the functional outcomes and structural changes of ESWT at 3-year follow-up after rotator cuff repair. Methods: A randomized clinical trial was conducted, including patients who underwent rotator cuff repair. The patients were assigned to two groups based on whether they underwent radial ESWT 3 months postoperatively. The ESWT Group received 5 weeks of rehabilitation and ESWT weekly, whereas the CONTROL Group received only rehabilitation. Visual analog scale (VAS) pain score and functional scores were analyzed at 3 months (baseline), 6 months, and 3 years follow-up. In addition, MRI and ultrasonography were used to assess tendon maturation, integrity, tendon quality, acromiohumeral distance (AHD), and muscle fatty infiltration. Results: Finally, 32 participants completed all the assessments. At the final follow-up, 2 patients in the ESWT Group (16.5 %) versus one patient in the CONTROL Group (6.25 %) had rotator cuff failure (P = 0.176). The ESWT treatment showed similar clinical outcomes in VAS-pain score, functional scores, tendon quality, AHD, and muscle fatty infiltration versus the CONTROL Group (Ps > 0.05). MRI analysis indicated improved tendon healing after ESWT treatment at both 6-month (P = 0.036) and 3-year follow-up (P = 0.028). Conclusion: Early intervention with radial ESWT sustained long-term effects on the healing of the repaired rotator cuff and similar functional outcomes at long-term follow-up compared with standard rehabilitation.

Abstract Background Percutaneous vertebroplasty or kyphoplasty is the preferred procedure for stage I and II Kümmell’s diseases (KDs), but there exist controversies on the operative option of stage III KD. This study aimed at exploring the safety and efficacy of ultrasonography-guided canal decompression (UG-CD) combined with vertebroplasty and cement-augmented pedicle screw fixation (CA-PSF) for treating stage III KD with neurological deficit (ND). Methods Between September 2017 and December 2023, all patients who received the UG-CD combined with vertebroplasty and CA-PSF for managing stage III KD with NDs were reviewed retrospectively with their demographic and operation data, and complications recorded. Besides, the scores of Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), together with imaging data including the kyphotic Cobb angle (KCA), wedge angle (WA), spinal canal area (SCA) at the narrowest level as well as anterior (AHR) and middle (MHR) height ratios were measured and compared between pre- and post-operation. Results A total of eleven patients with a mean age of 70.09 ± 2.98 years old were included in our study with their surgical time, hospitalization length, blood loss, and follow-up time being 150.91 ± 17.94 min, 202.09 ± 39.95 ml, 8.18 ± 1.17 days, and 16.91 ± 4.09 months, respectively. Abstract Background Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a common and serious risk in elderly patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA), making preoperative detection crucial. Despite this, identifying OA patients at high risk for preoperative DVT and appropriately targeting them for venous ultrasound screening remains a challenge. There is limited research-based evidence on the risk factors for preoperative DVT in elderly patients with end-stage OA. We examined the incidence of and risk factors for preoperative DVT in elderly patients with end-stage OA scheduled for total knee arthroplasty. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the demographic data (age, sex, body mass index, current smoking, alcohol consumption, walking status, and Barthel index score), medical history, and laboratory test indices of 1411 patients with end-stage OA aged ≥ 60 years scheduled for total knee arthroplasty from January 2015 to December 2018. Risk factors for preoperative DVT were evaluated by univariate and multivariate logistic analyses. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine optimal cut-off values. Results The incidence of preoperative DVT was 4.5% (63 of 1411 patients). Seven independent risk factors were correlated with preoperative DVT in the multivariate logistic regression: age (odds ratio [OR], 1.073; P = 0.002), D-dimer concentration (OR, 1.173; P = 0.003), hyperlipidemia (OR, 2.038; P = 0.045), atrial fibrillation (OR, 4.004; P = 0.033), chronic renal failure (OR, 6.732; P = 0.008), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (OR, 8.721; P = 0.001), and walking status (wheelchair) (OR, 2.697; P = 0.002). Abstract Background The evaluation of lateral ankle laxity remains challenging when diagnosing chronic lateral ankle instability (CLAI). Several studies have reported that internal rotation of the talus as an indicator of rotational lateral ankle laxity (RLAL) increases in patients with CLAI. However, there is no established method for detecting and evaluating the RLAL. This study aimed to report a novel method for evaluating the RLAL in the gravity stress position by measuring the talofibular distance (TFD) using ultrasonography (US) and show the normative value of the TFD. Methods The TFDs in the subjects with healthy ankles were prospectively measured 10 mm distal to the ankle joint in the neutral ankle position and gravity stress position using US. The differences in the TFD between the two ankle positions were evaluated. The differences in the TFD by gender and ankle laterality were also evaluated. Results A total of 52 healthy ankles of 28 subjects (mean age, 24.0 ± 1.6; male/female, 12/16) were finally included. Abstract This research aimed to assess the validity of ultrasound scans with new features in detecting fetal anal atresia and verify the effectiveness of these new features. Additionally, we aimed at investigating the perinatal incidence of anal atresia. This multicenter prospective study recruited 94,617 normal gravidas and 84 gravidas with anal atresia fetuses. The gold standard for diagnosing perinatal anal atresia is routine neonatal anus examinations. The incidence calculation was based on the results of the gold standard. The validity of our new approach was evaluated via a diagnostic test involving all 94,701 subjects. The effectiveness of our new features was assessed through an ablation study in a randomly established new dataset, with the ratio of anal atresia to non-anal atresia cases of 1:4. The annual perinatal incidence of anal atresia between 2019 and 2023 ranges from 0.57‰ to 1.29‰. Our new method performed great regarding the Youden index, diagnostic odds ratio (DOR), area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROCC), AUC of the precision-recall curve (PRC), F1-score, and Cramer’s V. In the ablation study, our new approach surpassed its competitors concerning Youden index, DOR, AUC of the ROCC, and AUC of the PRC. Ultrasound scans show high validity and clinical value in detecting fetal anal atresia. Our new ultrasound features significantly promote the detection of fetal anal atresia.

Abstract Background Amniotic Band Syndrome (ABS) is a rare congenital condition characterized by the formation of fibrous bands within the amniotic sac that can entangle and restrict fetal development, leading to various deformities. In this report, we present an unprecedented case of fetal amniotic band ingestion in a monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twin pregnancy. Reporting this case is essential for expanding the understanding of the diverse presentations of amniotic bands, considering this rare entity in the differential diagnosis of prenatal ultrasound findings, and emphasizing the importance of vigilant prenatal monitoring and individualized management strategies. Case Presentation A 35-year-old gravida 2, para 1 woman with an MCDA twin pregnancy experienced an uneventful pregnancy until the 33rd week, when routine ultrasonography revealed mild intrauterine growth restriction in both twins. At 35 weeks and 5 days gestation, the patient presented with mild abdominal pain. An emergency ultrasound revealed that Twin A ingested an amniotic band. Despite the absence of overt fetal distress, a comprehensive risk assessment was conducted, taking into account potential complications, such as airway obstruction and gastrointestinal issues due to prolonged amniotic band ingestion. Considering the risks versus the benefits of continued gestation and the near-term status, an emergency cesarean section was performed. The procedure resulted in the successful delivery of both twins with satisfactory Apgar scores. A 9-cm fibrous strand was promptly extracted from Twin A’s oral cavity after delivery, confirming prenatal diagnosis. Both neonates underwent thorough examinations, revealing no additional anomalies, and demonstrated normal development during the nine-month follow-up. Conclusion This case highlights the inherent challenges in diagnosing and managing the rare presentations of amniotic band-related complications, particularly in MCDA twin pregnancies. The instance of fetal amniotic band ingestion underscores the vital role of comprehensive prenatal imaging in ensuring accurate diagnosis and tailoring individualized risk assessments throughout the pregnancy in such rare and complex situations.

Joubert syndrome (JS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with brain stem and cerebellar malformations. Early diagnosis through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography (US) is crucial for managing this condition. This report presents a JS case diagnosed at 24 weeks of pregnancy. A 25-year-old gravida 2, para 1 woman was referred at 24 weeks’ gestation for suspected posterior fossa abnormalities. Ultrasound revealed normal cerebellar hemispheres but significant abnormalities in the cerebellar vermis, including the molar tooth sign and polydactyly, suggesting JS. The fetal MRI confirmed these findings. Following specialist consultations, the patient opted to terminate the pregnancy. A stillborn female infant was delivered, and genomic DNA sequencing identified a frameshift deletion in the AHI1 gene. Early prenatal diagnosis of JS is crucial for informed pregnancy management. The combination of ultrasonography, MRI, and genomic DNA sequencing proved effective for diagnosis.

Introduction: Ultrasonography (USG) serves as a crucial diagnostic tool in emergency settings, extending beyond the assessment of the acute abdomen to encompass a wide range of acute conditions involving both superficial and deep soft tissue components of the body. Aim: To analyse the demographic profile and diagnostic findings associated with emergency USG requisitions at a tertiary care centre. Materials and Methods: A retrospective observational descriptive study was conducted in the Department of Radiodiagnosis at Tomo Riba Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (TRIHMS), Naharlagun, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Data from all emergency on-call ultrasound cases performed at TRIHMS from June 18, 2022, to June 17, 2023, were collected from the ultrasound room. A total of 258 cases of emergency ultrasounds were conducted. The age, sex and findings of emergency USG were analysed. Results were expressed in terms of frequency and percentages. Results: Among a total of 258 cases, 175 (67.8%) were females and 83 (32.2%) were males. The mean age of the participants was 29.02±11.03 years. The distribution pattern by age revealed that the most common age group was 21 to 30 years, encompassing a total of 106 patients (41.1%), with 84 females and 22 males. A total of 71 cases were registered for obstetrics and gynaecology conditions, constituting 27.5% of the total. Conclusion: Although USG is requested for many emergency conditions in the hospital, the acute abdomen remains the foremost indication for an emergency USG call.

A heterozygous microdeletion of chromosome 7q11.23 causes the rare neuropsychiatric developmental disorder Williams-Beuren Syndrome. The syndrome is more difficult to diagnose before birth than after, even though the syndrome often manifests prenatally as intrauterine growth restriction and cardiovascular defects on prenatal ultrasonography. The potentially poor prognosis of affected individuals highlights the need to improve prenatal diagnosis of the syndrome. This review summarizes recent advances in our understanding of the genetics of Williams-Beuren Syndrome and its manifestations on prenatal ultrasonography, which may facilitate its early detection and inform prenatal genetic counseling.

ObjectiveTo research on area ossification ratio (AOR), a novel parameter for quantitatively assessing adolescent bone age by conventional ultrasonography, and evaluate the correlation between AOR and radiographic bone age.MethodsThe study selected healthy adolescents from a middle school in Shandong Province in June 2023. Ultrasonic images were collected from five anatomical sites (the styloid process of the ulna, the styloid process of the radius, the lateral epicondyle of the femur, the medial condyle of the tibia, and the posterior median sagittal plane of the tibia). The second ossification center and epiphyseal area on these 2D ultrasound images were delineated to calculate AOR. This ratio was then compared with radiographic bone age measured by Greulich-Pyle (GP) atlas. Inter- and intra-observer consistency was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and the Bland-Altman method.ResultsA total of 179 healthy adolescents (109 males and 70 females) were included. For both genders, AOR of each site exhibited a significant to high correlation with radiological bone age (r=0.60~0.91). The sum of the AORs of the five sites showed a high correlation with radiological bone age (males: r=0.95, females: r=0.87). Measurements of AOR by different doctors and the same doctor at different times demonstrated high repeatability (inter-observer: ICC=0.926, P < 0.001, intra-observer: ICC=0.954, P < 0.001).ConclusionsThe sum of AORs in adolescents is highly correlated with radiographic bone age, and the measurement method shows high repeatability. The AOR is a reliable parameter for the ultrasonic quantitative assessment of bone age in adolescents.
