Abstract

Hydrogen production by water splitting with Mn(II) ferrite and CaO (or [Na.sub.2]C[O.sub.3]) at 1273 K (or 873 K) was studied. The mixed powder of Mn[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.4] and CaO (CaO/Mn[Fe.sub.2][O.sub.4] [greater than] 3) (or [Na.sub.2]C[O.sub.3]) generates [H.sub.2] by reaction with [H.sub.2]O at 1273 K (or 873 K). This [H.sub.2] evolution is caused by the oxidation of Mn(II) ion in the ferrite to the Mn(III) ion. The temperature of 873 K is considerably lower for the solar furnace reaction ([O.sub.2] releasing step) in the two-step water splitting (1500-2300 K) process. This lower temperature and economical availability of required elements would permit further progress in the direct solar energy absorption/conversion into [H.sub.2].

Abstract

Waste tyre and plastic such as polyethylene terephthalate can be utilized as a useful material for conversion of solar energy into chemical energy by solar thermochemical gasification into synthesis gas (CO + [H.sub.2]) using concentrated solar energy. In the present paper, the gasification of waste tyre (C: 86 wt.%, H: 8.4 wt.%) and of PET [([C.sub.10][H.sub.8][O.sub.4]).sub.n], were studied using ZnO as a donor of oxygen in the infra-red furnace at 1373 K. For the gasification of tyre, most of the chemically bound hydrogen was converted into [H.sub.2] (62%) and [CH.sub.4] (29%) gases, while 71 mole% of the inherent carbon was gasified to CO (36%), [CH.sub.4] (29%), [C.sub.2][H.sub.4] (2%), and C[O.sub.2] (4%) in 200 s of the decomposition reaction. The C[O.sub.2]:CO ratio was about 1/10, indicating that the carbon in the waste tyre can be converted effectively to gaseous fuels. In the experiment without ZnO, the conversion efficiency of C and H were decreased to 17% and 77%, respectively. However an appreciable effect of ZnO on the enhancement of the gasification of PET was not observed.

Abstract

Segmental mandibulectomy is a treatment option for benign and malignant neoplasms of the mandible. Although reconstructing the mandible of a patient with a missing segment is difficult, it is essential to improve the postoperative course of the patient. Mandibular reconstruction using titanium mesh is a useful technique for dental implant placement because the morphology of the mandible can be easily reproduced. However, fitting titanium mesh to the remaining mandible is not an easy task during surgery. The present report introduces a method in which a 3-dimensional skull model fabricated by means of stereolithography is prepared, based on computerized tomography (eT) scans, to construct a titanium mesh cage matching the shape of the mandible, preoperatively. Furthermore, the load-bearing area of the titanium mesh cage is reinforced by laser welding another layer of titanium mesh to reduce the incidence of metal fatigue during jaw movement. Abstract

We succeeded in dissociating MgO using laser pulses without a reducing agent. The energy efficiency from laser to magnesium reaction energy exceeded 42.5%. Although 1 kW CO2 cw laser and Nd-YAG pulse laser are used in this experiment, the laser can be pumped by natural resources such as solar light or wind power. Thus natural resources are stored in the form of magnesium, which can be used through the reaction with water whenever we need the energy, and thus a renewable energy system will be established. This paper reports the preliminary experiments of MgO reduction toward a sustainable energy cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: Image-based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is widely used to predict intracranial aneurysm wall shear stress (WSS), particularly with the goal of improving rupture risk assessment. Nevertheless, concern has been expressed over the variability of predicted WSS and inconsistent associations with rupture. Previous challenges, and studies from individual groups, have focused on individual aspects of the image-based CFD pipeline. The aim of this Challenge was to quantify the total variability of the whole pipeline. Methods: 3D rotational angiography image volumes of five middle cerebral artery aneurysms were provided to participants, who were free to choose their segmentation methods, boundary conditions, and CFD solver and settings. Participants were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their solution strategies and experience with aneurysm CFD, and provide surface distributions of WSS magnitude, from which we objectively derived a variety of hemodynamic parameters. Results: A total of 28 datasets were submitted, from 26 teams with varying levels of self-assessed experience. Wide variability of segmentations, CFD model extents, and inflow rates resulted in interquartile ranges of sac average WSS up to 56%, which reduced to < 30% after normalizing by parent artery WSS. Sac-maximum WSS and low shear area were more variable, while rank-ordering of cases by low or high shear showed only modest consensus among teams. Experience was not a significant predictor of variability. Conclusions: Wide variability exists in the prediction of intracranial aneurysm WSS. Abstract

Neonatal hypoxic-ischemic (HI) encephalopathy (HIE) remains a major cause of mortality and persistent neurological disabilities in affected individuals. At present, hypothermia is considered to be the only applicable treatment option, although growing evidence suggests that cell-based therapy might achieve better outcomes. Dedifferentiated fat (DFAT) cells are derived from mature adipocytes via a dedifferentiation strategy called ceiling culture. Their abundance and ready availability might make them an ideal therapeutic tool for the treatment of HIE. In the present study, we aimed to determine whether the outcome of HIE can be improved by DFAT cell treatment. HI injury was achieved by ligating the left common carotid artery in 7-day-old rat pups, followed by 1-h exposure to 8% O2. Subsequently, the severity of damage was assessed by diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging to assign animals to equivalent groups. 24 h after hypoxia, DFAT cells were injected at 105 cells/pup into the right external jugular vein. To evaluate brain damage in the acute phase, a group of animals was sacrificed 48 h after the insult, and paraffin sections of the brain were stained to assess several acute injury markers. In the chronic phase, the behavioral outcome was measured by performing a series of behavioral tests. From the 24th day of age, the sensorimotor function was examined by evaluating the initial forepaw placement on a cylinder wall and the latency to falling from a rotarod treadmill. The cognitive function was tested with the novel object recognition (NOR) test. In vitro conditioned medium (CM) prepared from cultured DFAT cells was added at various concentrations to neuronal cell cultures, which were then exposed to oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD). The number of cells that stained positive for the apoptosis marker active caspase-3 decreased by 73 and 52% in the hippocampus and temporal cortex areas of the brain, respectively, in the DFAT-treated pups. Similarly, the numbers of ED-1-positive cells (activated microglia) decreased by 66 and 44%, respectively, in the same areas in the DFAT-treated group. The number of cells positive for the oxidative stress marker 4-hydroxyl-2-nonenal decreased by 68 and 50% in the hippocampus and the parietal cortex areas, respectively, in the DFAT-treated group. The HI insult led to a motor deficit according to the rotarod treadmill and cylinder test, where it significantly affected the vehicle group, whereas no difference was confirmed between the DFAT and sham groups. However, the NOR test indicated no significant differences between any of the groups. DFAT treatment did not reduce the infarct volume, which was confirmed immunohistochemically. According to in vitro experiments, the cell death rates in the DFAT-CM-treated cells were significantly lower than those in the controls when DFAT-CM was added 48 h prior to OGD. The treatment effect of adding DFAT-CM 24 h prior to OGD was also significant. Our results indicate that intravenous injection with DFAT cells is effective for ameliorating HI brain injury, possibly via paracrine effects.

Abstract

The rise of medical expenditures of the elderly due to chronic diseases such as heart failure, high blood pressure, diabetics, and stroke becomes an important social and economic issue. One measure to cope with this is telemonitoring or telemedicine, which monitors biodata of the elderly staying at home including blood pressure, ECG, and blood sugar from remote medical institutions. Nurses monitor data and provide health advice. This study analyzes whether or how much telemonitoring can reduce users’ medical expenditures and days of treatment in the long run. Using nine years data from 2002 to 2010 of Nishi-aizu Town, Fukushima Prefecture, Japan, the method of research is to compare the outcomes mentioned above between users of telemonitaring (treatment group) and non-users (control group) based on receipt of payment obtained from the National Health Insurance. The numbers of samples are 90 users and 118 non-users, respectively. Employing rigorous statistical methods, including the Instrumental Variable method, which deals with the endogeneity problem, this paper demonstrated that the treatment group has smaller medical expenditures by USD650 and fewer treatment days by 4.2 than non-users with respect to chronic diseases in the long run. In comparison with author’s previous results based on five years data, this paper showed the longer they use, the larger the outcomes. To date, there is no study on examining the long-term economic effects of telemedicine, and thus the economic foundation for the sustainability of the telemedicine project is supported by this study.

189. Photochemical removal of NO2 in air at atmospheric pressure using side-on type 172-nm Xe2 excimer lamp.

Abstract

The photochemical removal of NO2 in air (1–20% O2) was studied using a side-on type 172-nm Xe2 excimer lamp. The removal rate of NO2 using the side-on lamp (SL), 37.5 min−1, was faster than that using a head-on lamp (HL), 5.4 min−1, with the same input power of 20 W by a factor of 6.9. The energy efficiency for removal of NO2 using the SL was 3.2 g/kWh, which was 12 times higher than that using the HL. Significant enhancement of the removal rate and the energy efficiency using the SL was attributed to a significant increase in the irradiation volume because of a wider irradiation window. Under the SL irradiation, HNO3 was a major final product that differed from N2O5 obtained under the HL irradiation. To obtain the information related to the conversion mechanism of NO2 to HNO3 under 172-nm photolysis in air, computer simulation of the reaction processes was conducted. Results show that the OH + NO2 reaction is a major pathway for the formation of HNO3 in the SL, where OH radicals are formed by 172-nm photolysis of H2O. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ultraviolet and visible chemiluminescence have been observed from the reactions of C+ with CO2, NO2, and N2O in a flowing afterglow. The CO+(A–X) chemiluminescence from v′=0–2 was identified in the C++CO2 reaction, while chemiluminescence from levels up to v′=11 was found in the C++NO2 and N2O reactions. The relative vibrational populations of CO+(A) have been determined and are compared with statistical prior distributions. The experimental data show that only about 10% of the total available energy is deposited in the CO+(A) vibration for all cases. The relative rate constants for formation of CO+(A) in the C++CO2, O2, NO2, and N2O reactions are estimated to be 1.0:9.8:18:60, respectively. In the C++N2O reaction, CN(A–X,B–X) chemiluminescence was also observed: the CN(B–X) system is produced exclusively as a result of rotational perturbations between the B and A states.
