157. Modulational Chaos in Periodically Amplified Fiber Links and in Fiber Lasers

Abstract

The optical Kerr effect leads to modulational instability (MI) in optical fibers, which involves the periodic exchange of energy between a continuous wave (cw) at frequency ω0 and its sidebands at the frequencies = ω1,2 = ω0 ±Ω [1]. In dissipative systems such as repeaterless fiber transmission links [2] or fiber amplifiers [3], the presence of linear loss or gain modifies the spectrum of. MI gain, and the frequency conversion process is aperiodic. We show here that spatially chaotic behavior may arise in the frequency conversion whenever a modulated light field propagates in a spatially periodic fiber systems such as a periodically amplified links [4] or a ring laser [5].

Exact solutions in terms of elliptic integrals to the problem of mixing between a wave and its second-harmonic in a medium with quadratic and/or cubic nonlinearity have been reported in the nonlinear optics literature since the early sixties [1-4]. These solutions involve rather cumbersome expressions which do not lead to an immediate insight into the physics of the conversion process.

194. Pulse switching in active semiconductor nonlinear directional couplers

Abstract

It is well known that semiconductor materials display large and fast electronic nonlinearities at optical frequencies in the vicinity of their fundamental band gap. This suggests that semiconductors should be suitable materials for fabricating fast and short nonlinear directional couplers (NLDC). For a NLDC operating in cw mode, a low-power input signal introduced into one channel will emerge from a second adjacent waveguide, whereas a high-power signal would remain in the input channel. However, for pulses, the distribution of powers in the input leads to pulse breakup and part of the input energy is always transferred to the second channel. This crosstalk places a limitation on the applications of NLDCs for all-optical switching. In this talk we will discuss methods for obtaining pulse switching in active semiconductor NLDCs. Active couplers have a distinct advantage over their passive counterparts in that they should be cascadable. We have found that single pulse switching is difficult to achieve because of pulse breakup effects for pulse lengths >1 ps. However, for short pulses (

Among several integrated all-optical devices proposed to date, the nonlinear directional coupler (NLDC) has received considerable attention.1 Experiments have demonstrated self-switching of light in semiconductor NLDCs with cw2 or picosecond excitation.3 It appears that two main drawbacks may hamper the cascadability of passive semiconductor NLDCs and thus their application to future optical circuits: pulse breakup and absorptive losses.
