We study the effects of imprinting a single-quantized vortex on the steady state of a microcavity exciton-polariton condensate generated via parametric scattering. Interestingly we observe two distinct regimes: In the first case, at low polariton densities, the effect of the pulsed probe, containing the vortex state, is to generate a gain response in the condensate lasting for tens of picoseconds during which no dissipation of the circulating currents is detected. In the second regime, at higher densities, the gain lasts much less and the circulation is imprinted directly into the steady state, which acquires permanent rotation for as long as the vortex remains within the condensate. We use two different ways of measuring the circulation of the condensate and demonstrate that in both cases, polariton condensation in the parametric scattering regime can sustain permanent supercurrents. - Abstract

To verify whether it is possible, in people with diabetes mellitus (DM) considered at very high cardiovascular (CV) risk, stratify this risk better and identify significant modifiable risk factor (including lifestyle habits) to help patients and clinicians improve CV prevention. People with DM and microvascular diseases or one or more CV risk factors (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, poor dietary habits, overweight, physical inactivity) included in the Risk and Prevention study were selected. We considered the combined endpoint of non-fatal acute myocardial infarction and stroke and CV death. A multivariate Cox proportional analysis was carried out to identify relevant predictors. We also used the RECPAM method to identify subgroups of patients at higher risk. In our study, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected (5 % in 5 years). Predictors of CV events were age, male, sex, heart failure, previous atherosclerotic disease, atrial fibrillation, insulin treatment, high HbA1c, heart rate and other CV diseases while being physically active was protective. RECPAM analysis indicated that history of atherosclerotic diseases and a low BMI defined worse prognosis (HR 4.51 95 % CI 3.04–6.69). Among subjects with no previous atherosclerotic disease, men with HbA1c more than 8 % were at higher CV risk (HR 2.77; 95 % CI 1.86–4.14) with respect to women. In this population, the rate of major CV events was lower than expected. This prediction model could help clinicians identify people with DM at higher CV risk and support them in achieving goals of physical activity and HbA1c.

Hygiene and biosecurity deficiencies in breeding farms are amplified exponentially in the hatchery. The microbial population present in the hatchery has a significant impact on the quality of the chicks, on their chances of survival and their productive performances. The purpose of the present study was to assess the degree of bacterial contamination of chicken eggs in an industrial poultry hatchery. Samples of twenty batches of eggs, collected at different stages of the incubation, from the arrival to the hatcher, were subjected to bacteriological tests. The bacterial contamination of the eggs at the arrival, both of the shells than of the yolks, was found to be rather low. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other bacteria of minor importance such as Citrobacter freundii, Providencia alcalifaciens, Enterobacter spp., Enterobacter agglomerans, Pseudomonas cepacia, Sphingomonas paucimobilis were isolated. At the hatching, the bacterial contamination was significantly larger. Escherichia coli was present in the 88,25% of eggs pipped but chicks dead-in-shell, and in most of the chicks dead-in-shell without pipping (22%). Various other bacteria species were also isolated (in association or not with Escherichia coli or Salmonella Livingstone), in particular: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus mirabilis, Enterobacter spp., Escherichia fergusonii, Citrobacter koseri, Citrobacter amalonaticus, Citrobacter freundii, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Acinetobacter lwoffii, Serratia liquefaciens. Salmonella Livingstone was isolated from dead-in-shell chicks of two batches of eggs. The results of the present survey confirm the role of Escherichia coli as one of the major bacterial contaminant of poultry hatcheries. Moreover, results of our study highlight how the hatchery may have an amplifier effect of the bacterial contamination. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, present respectively in the 5% and in the 10% of the batches of eggs at the arrival, were found during the hatching respectively in the 15% and 100% of dead-in-shell chicks.

Quantum dots (QDs) and polymeric nanoparticles (NPs) are considered good binomials for the development of multifunctional nanomedicines for multimodal imaging. Fluorescent imaging of QDs can monitor the behavior of QD-labeled NPs in both cells and animals with high temporal and spatial resolutions. The comprehension of polymer interaction with the metallic QD surface must be considered to achieve a complete chemicophysical characterization of these systems and to describe the QD optical properties to be used for their unequivocal identification in the tissue. In this study, by comparing two different synthetic procedures to obtain polymeric nanoparticles labeled with QDs, we investigated whether their optical properties may change according to the formulation methods, as a consequence of the different polymeric environments. Atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, confocal and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy characterization demonstrated that NPs modified with QDs after the formulation process (post-NPs-QDs) conserved the photophysical features of the. QD probe. In contrast, by using a polymer modified with QDs to formulate NPs (pre-NPs-QDs), a significant quenching of QD fluorescence and a blueshift in its emission spectra were observed. Our results suggest that the packaging of QDs into the polymeric matrix causes a modification of the QD optical properties: these effects must be characterized in depth and carefully considered when developing nanosystems for imaging and biological applications.

Objectives: Poultry have been suggested as a reservoir for fluoroquinolone-resistant extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC). Our aim was to investigate whether genotypes associated with ciprofloxacin and multidrug resistance were shared among human and avian E. coli. Methods: We compared 277 human ExPEC isolates from urinary tract infection (UTI) and sepsis (142 susceptible and 135 ciprofloxacin resistant) and 101 avian isolates (68 susceptible and 33 ciprofloxacin resistant) by antimicrobial resistance phenotype, phylogenetic group and multilocus sequence type (ST). Results: Most ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates from both human and avian sources were multidrug resistant. Human and avian isolates strongly differed in phylogenetic group assignment (B2 and A predominated among human and avian isolates, respectively), but a shift towards group A associated with ciprofloxacin resistance was observed among human isolates (8/100, 8.0% versus 17/87, 19.5%, P¼0.021 for UTI and 5/42, 11.9% versus 15/48, 31.3%, P¼0.028 for sepsis). Heterogeneity of ST clones was observed, with ST131 strongly predominant in human ciprofloxacin-resistant strains (58/135, 43.0%), but not in avian strains. However, two major ST clonal complexes (CCs; CC10 and CC23, both belonging to group A) associated with ciprofloxacin resistance and multiresistance were shared by human and avian isolates. Conclusions: The major human and avian E. coli ST clones associated with multidrug resistance were identified. A subset of ST clones belonging to CC10 and CC23 poses a potential zoonotic risk.

TORTORA DAL COLLARE ORIENTALE (STREPTOPELIA DECAOCTO) ,ELEVATA MORTALITÀ - Abstract

During the period 1994-2004, rotavirus particles were detected in 26,6 % of 481 cases of enteritis affecting 1-5 week old turkey poults. In this paper we report the preliminary data obtained from the characterization of 13 rotavirus strains. They were originating from different farms of Lombardia (5), Emilia (1) and Romagna (6); the last strain included in the survey was from abroad (Spain). These strains, all identified by negative staining electron microscopy, were further examined using group A ELISA and then characterised using electrophoretic analysis (PAGE) of the viral dsRNA. By this method multiple electrophoretical patterns were showed, suggesting that different rotavirus strains are co-circulating in turkey farms in North Italy.

- Abstract
The "Policast" process is already in an advanced stage of industrialisation. However some interesting areas need further investigation in order to improve the effectiveness and consistency of the process.Among them there are the problems concerning the coatings used to cover the patterns of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS). In the present study, the porosity, the external appearance of the coating layers and the setting-up of the methodology and apparatus for permeability inspection are investigated. All these parameters are strictly interconnected, and they affect the success of the resultant castings, as demonstrated by systematic testing.

We present a time-resolved study of energy relaxation and trapping dynamics of polariton condensates in a semiconductor microcavity ridge. The combination of two non-resonant, pulsed laser sources in a GaAs ridge-shaped microcavity gives rise to profuse quantum phenomena where the repulsive potentials created by the lasers allow the modulation and control of the polariton flow. We analyze in detail the dependence of the dynamics on the power of both lasers and determine the optimum conditions for realizing an all-optical polariton condensate transistor switch. The experimental results are interpreted in the light of simulations based on a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii equation, including incoherent pumping, decay and energy relaxation within the condensate., 15 pages, 20 figures

Background Trials have shown a beneficial effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with a previous myocardial infarction or heart failure. We evaluated the potential benefit of such therapy in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease who had not had a myocardial infarction. Methods In this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, we enrolled a cohort of patients who were followed by a network of 860 general practitioners in Italy. Eligible patients were men and women with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease but not myocardial infarction. Patients were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids (1 g daily) or placebo (olive oil). The initially specified primary end point was the cumulative rate of death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke. At 1 year, after the event rate was found to be lower than anticipated, the primary end point was revised as time to death from cardiovascular causes or admission to the hospital for cardiovascular causes. Results Of the 12,513 patients enrolled, 6244 were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids and 6269 to placebo. With a median of 5 years of follow-up, the primary end point occurred in 1478 of 12,505 patients included in the analysis (11.8%), of whom 733 of 6239 (11.7%) had received n-3 fatty acids and 745 of 6266 (11.9%) had received placebo (adjusted hazard ratio with n-3 fatty acids, 0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.88 to 1.08; P=0.58). The same null results were observed for all the secondary end points. Conclusions In a large general-practice cohort of patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, daily treatment with n-3 fatty acids did not reduce cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.
