Abstract

Phonon-assisted tunneling in a double barrier resonant tunneling device can be seen as a resonance in the electron-phonon Fock space which is tuned by the applied voltage. We show that the geometrical parameters can induce a symmetry condition in this space that can strongly enhance the emission of longitudinal optical phonons. Abstract

The aim of this work is to describe the behavior of a device capable to generate high frequency (~THz) acoustic phonons. This device consists in a GaAs-AlGaAs double barrier heterostructure that, when an external bias is applied, produces a high rate of longitudinal optical LO phonons. These LO phonons are confined and they decay by stimulated emission of a pair of secondary longitudinal optical (LO_2) and transversal acoustic (TA) phonons. The last ones form an intense beam of coherent acoustic phonons. To study this effect, we start from a tight binding Hamiltonian that take into account the electron-phonon (e-ph) and phonon-phonon (ph-ph) interactions. We calculate the electronic current through the double barrier and we obtain a set of five coupled kinetic equations that describes the electron and phonon populations. In patients with cUTI, Pseudomonas aeruginosa deserves special attention, since it can affect patients with serious underlying conditions. Our aim was to gain insight into the risk factors and prognosis of P. aeruginosa cUTIs in a scenario of increasing multidrug resistance (MDR). Methods: This was a multinational, retrospective, observational study at 20 hospitals in south and southeastern Europe, Turkey, and Israel including consecutive patients with cUTI hospitalized between January 2013 and December 2014. A mixed-effect logistic regression model was performed to assess risk factors for P. aeruginosa and MDR P. aeruginosa cUTI.Results: Of 1,007 episodes of cUTI, 97 (9.6%) were due to P. aeruginosa. Resistance rates of P. aeruginosa were: antipseudomonal cephalosporins 35 of 97 (36.1%), aminoglycosides 30 of 97 (30.9%), piperacillin–tazobactam 21 of 97 (21.6%), fluoroquinolones 43 of 97 (44.3%), and carbapenems 28 of 97 (28.8%). The MDR rate was 28 of 97 (28.8%). Independent risk factors for P. aeruginosa cUTI were male sex (OR 2.61, 95% CI 1.60–4.27), steroid therapy (OR 2.40, 95% CI 1.10–5.27), bedridden functional status (OR 1.79, 95% CI 0.99–3.25), antibiotic treatment within the previous 30 days (OR 2.34, 95% CI 1.38–3.94), indwelling urinary catheter (OR 2.41, 95% CI 1.43–4.08), and procedures that anatomically modified the urinary tract (OR 2.01, 95% CI 1.04–3.87). Independent risk factors for MDR P. aeruginosa cUTI were age (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.93–0.99) and anatomical urinary tract modification (OR 4.75, 95% CI 1.06–21.26). Readmission was higher in P. aeruginosa cUTI patients than in other etiologies (23 of 97 [23.7%] vs 144 of 910 [15.8%], P=0.04), while 30-day mortality was not significantly different (seven of 97 [7.2%] vs 77 of 910 [8.5%], P=0.6).Conclusion: Patients with P. aeruginosa cUTI had characteristically a serious baseline condition and manipulation of the urinary tract, although their mortality was not higher than that of patients with cUTI caused by other etiologies. Resumen: Introducción. La enfermedad pulmonar obstructiva crónica es una enfermedad común, prevenible y tratable. Constitu- ye en la actualidad la 4a causa de mortalidad a nivel mundial con tendencia ascendente. Es una entidad muy infradiag- nosticada, que supone un elevado gasto a la Sanidad Pública y una importante pérdida de calidad de vida de las perso- nas que la padecen. En la actualidad no existe un programa de cribado eficaz y el seguimiento de los pacientes es una tarea difícil. Material y métodos. Se ha realizado una búsqueda sistemática de artículos relacionados con el manejo de la EPOC basado en el uso de las tecnologías. Las bases de datos utilizadas han sido: MEDLINE, Web of Science y Cochrane Library, además de las páginas web de organismos como WHO, SEPAR y GOLD. Se han incluido un total de 12 ar- tículos. Resultados. Del total de 12 artículos, 7 encontraron beneficios estadísticamente significativos de la aplicación de estas intervenciones en comparación con la asistencia sanitaria habitual. Entre los beneficios observados se encuentran un aumento de la adherencia a los tratamientos, un aumento de la calidad de vida, un mejor control sintomático y una re- ducción del número de exacerbaciones agudas. Conclusiones. La telemedicina es una herramienta potente que ofrece un amplio abanico de posibilidades para el mane- jo de la EPOC: telemonitorización, coaching electrónico, prevención temprana de las exacerbaciones, screening, tele- rehabilitación... Sin embargo, las evidencias existentes son insuficientes por lo que se requieren estudios potentes para poder extraer conclusiones firmes. It is currently the 4th cause of mortality worldwide with an upward trend. It is a underdiagnosed entity, which implies a high cost to Public Health, and a huge loss of quality of life for the people who suffer it. Currently, there is no effective screening program, and follow-up is a difficult task. Material and methods. A systematic review was made of articles related to the management of COPD based on the use of the technologies. The databases used were: MEDLINE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library in addition to the websites of organizations such as WHO, SEPAR and GOLD. A total of 12 articles have been included. Results. Of the total of 12 articles, 7 found statistically significant benefits of the application of these interventions in comparison with the usual healthcare. Among the benefits there is an increase in treatment adherence, an increase in quality of life, better control of their symptoms and a reduction in the number of accute exacerbations. Conclusions. Telemedicine is a powerful tool that offers a wide range of possibilities for the management of COPD: telemonitoring, electronic coaching, early prevention of exacerbations, screening, telerehabilitation... However, the existing evidence is weak so it is required the development of powerful studies in order to establish firm conclusions. Keywords: telemedicine; COPD; telemonitoring; telerehabilitation.

Abstract

A Gaussian mixture model (GMM) was implemented to investigate the relationship between the liquid holdup (in various parts of the flow) and the pressure for different experimental realizations of high-viscosity gas–liquid flows. We considered a Newtonian fluid with a constant viscosity of 6 Pa s (600 cP) under a laboratory-controlled temperature. Because the pressure and the holdup do not exhibit a clear-cut relationship in the time domain, a supervised classification algorithm and a "deep" neural network (DNN) were first applied to classify the data points and predict average holdup values. Then, the GMM was applied to determine the holdup in various liquid aggregation structures of the flow as a function of the pressure. The growth rates of the cumulative lengths of the liquid structures (i.e., slug body, mixing front, and liquid film) and the gas bubbles were obtained. Abstract

Recalcitrant pollutants present in wastewater, without an effective treatment, have several effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health due to their chemical structure and persistence. Therefore, it is crucial the development of efficient technologies to eliminate such pollutants in water. Nano-photocatalysts are considered a promising technology for water remediation; however, one common drawback is the difficulty of recovering it after water processing. One effective strategy to overcome such problem is its immobilization into substrates such as polymeric membranes. In this study, a polymeric membrane with embedded Mg0.975Ni0.025SiO3 is proposed to remove model pollutants diclofenac sodium and methylene blue dye by synergetic adsorption and photocatalytic processes. Mg0.975Ni0.025SiO3 was synthesized by the combustion method. The matrix polymeric blend consisting of a blend of cellulose acetate, crystalline nanocellulose and polyvinylidene fluoride was obtained by the phase inversion method. The composite membranes were characterized by FTIR, x-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. With pollutant solutions at pH 7, the pollutant adsorption capacity of the membranes reached up to 30% and 45% removal efficiencies for diclofenac sodium and methylene blue, respectively. Under simulated solar irradiation photocatalytic removal performances of 70% for diclofenac sodium pH 7, and of 97% for methylene blue dye at pH 13, were reached. The membrane photocatalytic activity allows the membrane to avoid pollutant accumulation on its surface, given a self-cleaning property that allows the reuse of at least three cycles under sunlight simulator irradiation. These results suggest the high potential of photocatalytic membranes using suitable and economical materials such as cellulosic compounds and magnesium silicates for water remediation. Abstract

This research investigates the bond behaviour of externally bonded (EB) and hybrid bonded (HB) fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) concrete joints, addressing the issue of intermediate crack debonding (ICD) in RC beams. A numerical model is proposed to simulate ICD by applying one tensile force at each FRP end and implementing different bond-slip laws. Results indicate that adding one anchor to a single-shear configuration enhanced the load capacity compared to EB strengthening, with the lower loaded end being its optimal position. La criticidad como producto de la evoluci?n del hombre, puede tener su origen y desarrollo en tres hitos fundamentales; el primero en Thales de Mileto, quien promovi? el cambio de la evocaci?n mitol?gica hacia el uso de la raz?n, el segundo liderado por S?crates con el desarrollo de la may?utica y, el tercero la Escuela de Fr?ncfort, que consolida las bases de la teor?a cr?tica y las transversaliza a diversas disciplinas. Las ciencias naturales por su desarrollo y objetividad exigen el fomento de la lectura cr?tica en estudiantes, con la finalidad de potenciar la capacidad de decisi?n, transformaci?n y generalizaci?n de los procesos naturales. Este ensayo se realiza a trav?s de una revisi?n bibliogr?fica con enfoque hermen?utico y, tiene dos prop?sitos, el primero es describir los cimientos de la criticidad y, el segundo, indicar el fundamento para consolidar la ense?anza y aprendizaje de la lectura cr?tica en ciencias naturales. Criticality as a product of the evolution of man, can have its origin and development in three fundamental milestones; the first in Thales of Miletus, who promoted the change of the mythological evocation to the use of reason, the second led by Socrates with the development of maieutics and, the third the Frankfurt School, which consolidated the bases of critical theory and transversalized them to various disciplines. The natural sciences, due to their development and objectivity, demand the promotion of critical reading in students, with the purpose of enhancing the capacity for decision, transformation and generalization of natural processes. This essay is carried out through a bibliographic review with a hermeneutic approach and has two purposes: the first is to describe the foundations of criticality and the second is to indicate the basis for consolidating the teaching and learning of critical reading in the natural sciences. Finally, it is concluded that critical reading is a skill that is acquired as a function of the adequate development of basic thinking skills in a sequential manner, which also consolidate logical-deductive reasoning in scientific education; for this reason, it is necessary to strengthen them throughout schooling, so that the student can manage more easily in a globalized world.

In this paper we investigate the statistical properties of gravitational lenses for models in which a cosmological term decreases with time as $\Lambda \propto a^{-m}$, where $a$ is the scale factor and $m$ is a parameter ($0 \leq m < 3$). We show that for given low values of the present matter density parameter $\Omega_{m0}$, there is a wide range of values for $m$ for which the lensing rate is significantly smaller than that in cosmological constant ($\Lambda$) models. Abstract

The search for neutrinoless double beta decay (DBD-0ν) is a powerful tool to establish the correct neutrino mass hierarchy and whether the neutrino is a Majorana or Dirac particle. The Milano group has run several experiments using thermal detectors to search for the 130Te DBD-0ν. The Cuoricino experiment consists of an array of 62 TeO2 thermal detectors for a total mass of about 40 kg, by far the largest cryogenic experiment in the world. The detector installation in the Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory has been recently completed. After a test phase the experiment is now taking data and we report here the preliminary results. Cuoricino is the first step toward the CUORE experiment, which will consists of 1000 TeO2 thermal detectors for a total mass of about 760 kg: in this paper we discuss also the physics potential of both stages for what concerns the DBD-0ν search. Abstract

Sensory processing disorder greatly affects people performance because it disturbs processes that allow them to interact with the surrounding world and coordinate their activity with it. Frequently, children with difficulties of this type are identified in the classroom, but there is not knowledge enough to understand what is happening to them, how to approach them and how to work interdisciplinary. For these reasons, this review aims to identify and analyse the outstanding conceptual elements in the literature and the characteristics of the empirical studies carried out in this discipline, which serve as a guide to those interested in the subject. For this purpose, an articles review published since 2005 to date was carried out, mainly in Spanish language. Among the consulted databases it can be found REDALYC, DOAJ, DIALNET, using as main descriptors: Sensory integration, learning, psychomotricity, disorder in the Sensory processing, sensory profile. It was contemplated texts describing some learning criteria affected by sensory processing deficiencies, explaining the Sensory Integration model and including alterations in sensory modulation processing and its affectation in occupational performance of the minors. Se utiliza un diseño correlacional causal, con una muestra de 217 docentes a quienes se les aplicó dos instrumentos de evaluación: el Cuestionario de Gestión del Conocimiento de Liliana Pedraja y el Inventario de competencias docentes de Úrsula Romaní. Los análisis a los que se sometieron estos instrumentos determinaron consistentes niveles de validez y confiabilidad. Los resultados indican que la gestión del conocimiento influye significativamente sobre las competencias profesionales de los docentes (F = 18,136, p < ,001). Igualmente se puede apreciar en los resultados que las citadas variables están correlacionadas en sus totales y en sus dimensiones, por lo que podemos afirmar que se cumplieron todos los objetivos planteados.

Abstract

In the last few years important efforts have been made to rationalise the growing corporate sustainability or CSR/ESG standards field aiming at achieving some degree of harmonisation. Yet, these efforts might be unable to capture the diversity of CSR/ESG issues, particularly those that relate to the promotion of sustainable work. This paper aims to analyse the extent to which aspects of labour and working conditions are included in selected CSR/ESG standards and frameworks. We consider the need for a ‘CSR/ESG inspired’ approach to promote good practice and discuss the current state of the art. Twenty CSR/ESG instruments were thematically analysed using key international labour standards as benchmark. A framework of six main themes emerged from the analysis: corporate governance; business and human rights; diversity, equity, and inclusion; industrial relations; occupational health, safety and wellbeing; and human resource practices. Our findings highlight the extent of inclusivity of these instruments as well as support the global efforts for harmonisation by identifying common labour and working conditions topics. The framework that has been developed in this paper can be also used as a guidance to analyse corporate social responsibility initiatives and/or corporate reporting with a focus on labour and working conditions.

Abstract

Background: It is acknowledged that legislation acts as a motivator for organizational action on psychosocial risks. Our study aims to provide evidence on the relationship between key occupational safety and health (OSH) policy principles and organizational action on work-related stress, and, in turn, with reported employee job demands and resources and their experience of work-related stress. We focus on Italy where specific legislation and practices on work-related stress were introduced in 2008 which are underpinned by these key OSH policy principles. Methods: Secondary analysis of the Italian samples from the employer ESENER-2 and employee 6th EWCS surveys was conducted, using path analysis in structural equation modeling (SEM) linking the two datasets. Results: We found a strong statistically significant relationship between OSH policy principles and organizational action on work-related stress (C.I. = .62-.78 p < .001). The existence of an organizational action plan on work-related stress was found to be significantly associated with more reported job resources (C.I. = .02-.24, p < .05) but these were not found to be significantly associated with less work-related stress. No significant association was found between having an organizational action plan for work-related stress and reported job demands. However, job demands were significantly related to reported work-related stress (C.I. = .27-.47, p < .001). Conclusions: Findings add support to the call for specific legislation on work-related psychosocial risks and highlight how an organizational OSH culture underpinned by key OSH principles, and awareness/competence development on psychosocial risk management can have a positive effect on organizational action. However, further support needs to be provided to organizations around developing primary prevention interventions at the organizational level with the aim of reducing job demands.
