153. Structural and thermal studies of the orthophosphates hopeite and phosphophyllite involved in corrosion prevention

Abstract

Modern anti-corrosion coatings in the automotive industry involve the application of coats of zinc based hydrated orthophosphates. The two phosphates involved are hopeite, Zn₃(PO₄)₂.4H₂O, and phosphophyllite, Zn₂Fe(PO₄)₂.4H₂O. Both are naturally occurring minerals and are structurally related, involving interlinked octahedra and tetrahedra of oxygens filled by phosphorus and metal ions. Hopeite contains zinc in the octahedra holes and phosphophyllite involves iron in these holes. Hopeite and phosphophyllite were synthesised from solutions of the metal sulphate salts and diammonium hydrogen phosphate; the products are white insoluble crystalline powders. These two materials were characterised using powder x-ray diffraction, to study the structures, and thermal analysis methods to investigate their dehydration processes. It has been proposed that hopeite exists in two structurally identical forms, different only in their thermal properties, known as α-hopeite and β-hopeite. Both undergo two stages of dehydration equivalent to 2 water molecules each, at 120°C and 300°C for α-hopeite and 120^oC and 160^oC for β-hopeite. Structural analysis revealed one pair of water molecules to be further away from the coordination centre, so are lost first. The structure of the dihydrate formed is not clearly known. The initial synthesis of hopeite was performed at pH= 0.9, other syntheses were performed at higher pHs. X-ray Rietveld analysis revealed hopeite to be non-stoichiometric, with the octahedral sites being deficient in zinc atoms at the lower pHs. This was reflected in the site occupation and the average Zn-OH₂ bondlengths which were seen to increase as the occupation decreased. The thermal study of the variable pH materials showed that low pH precipitations produced α-hopeite, and the higher ones produced β-hopeite. Thus, the type of hopeite formed is dependent on the pH and the difference is caused by the change in the occupation of the ZnO₆ octahedra. A natural sample of hopeite gave a β-hopeite like thermal behaviour, but a low occupation of the octahedral site.

Abstract

This thesis addresses the problem of making high resolution magnetic measurements. The design and development of a new instrument, optimized for this type of investigation , are described and experiments utilizing this instrument to measure slowly changing fields are reported. The biological system studied was the chick in ovo, from which strong (10-100 pT ), slowly changing magnetic fields were measured during the first few days of incubation . To independent sources were modelled. Using a novel extended source algorithm , a continuous current density distribution in the extra-embryonic membranes was imaged and, by greatly refining the experiment, a localized generator was discovered. There is evidence that this source may be associated with the morphological development of the chick embryo.

167. Student Interest for Environment/Sustainability Undergraduate Programmes: Recent Australian Experience

Abstract

Increasingly, employers are seeing the need to have employees who have capabilities in sustainability. The hope is that there will be a sufficient number of appropriately educated people to enter the environment profession to meet the needs of these employers and the community. For some two decades a range of university programmes in Australia have been graduating a steady stream of environment professionals. However, recent data for the preferences expressed by prospective students for environment and sustainability related programmes indicates that there has not been a growth in the popularity of these programmes as might be expected from the public awareness of environmental issues. Rather, there has been a trend of reduced popularity. If the future needs of employers and the broad community for environment professionals is to be met, increased numbers of young people will have to be attracted to the university programmes. Without going into specifics, the article provides some broad suggestions for what could be done.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION:There is evidence suggesting that smoking and obesity prior to a breast cancer diagnosis is associated with poorer outcomes. In this study, we investigate the associations between smoking and obesity prior to a breast cancer diagnosis and the presence of lymph node metastases at diagnosis. METHODS:Women with stage I-III breast cancer (n = 3,304) were identified from the National Cancer Institute's Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial. Univariable and multivariable log-binomial models were used to estimate relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations between lymph node positive breast cancer and; i) smoking, and ii) obesity prior to diagnosis. RESULTS:Pre-diagnostic smoking/obesity was not associated with lymph node metastasis at diagnosis in multivariable analyses; (RR 0.82, 95%CI 0.61, 1.10) and (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.81, 1.12), respectively. CONCLUSION:Obesity and smoking information was recorded a number of years prior to breast cancer diagnosis, therefore these findings should to be replicated in a larger cohort of women, with more detailed smoking and obesity information.

Abstract

Education for Sustainability (EfS) has an intimate relationship with professional employment as we seek to develop graduates who will take EfS values and understanding into their workplaces to build a sustainable future. The connection is through the capabilities that employers are wanting in the people they employ, and they are the outcomes of the educational experiences that we educators provide for the graduates. This article discusses the role of capabilities and their articulation in universities, particularly the types of capabilities sought by employers, both in Australia and more generally. We discuss similarities and differences articulated by academics and industry, and the implications for curriculum design and outcomes. In parallel, we note the discussion of capabilities associated with EfS and identify similarities with more broadly defined graduate capabilities. Research associated with the exploration of the breadth of the environment profession provides examples of the connections. These insights combine to highlight tension between what is sought by industry and what is needed to embed sustainable development actions into industry through the change agents graduated from our universities.

Modern proteomic techniques are excellent at producing a parts-list for such complexes, but more detailed analysis demands a network approach linking the molecules together and analysing the emergent architectural properties. Methods developed for the analysis of networks in social sciences have proven very useful for splitting biological networks into communities leading to the discovery of sub-complexes enriched with molecules associated with specific diseases or molecular functions that are not apparent from the constituent components alone. Results Here, we present the Bioconductor package BioNAR, which supports step-by-step analysis of biological/biomedical networks with the aim of quantifying and ranking each of the network's vertices based on network topology and clustering. Examples demonstrate that while BioNAR is not restricted to proteomic networks, it can predict a protein's impact within multiple complexes, and enables estimation of the co-occurrence of metadata, i.e. diseases and functions across the network, identifying the clusters whose components are likely to share common function and mechanisms.
