154. Introduction of bismuth into the highTcsuperconductor La2−xSrxCuO4−y

Abstract

Novel high-Tcsuperconductors La2-xBix'Srx-x'CuO4-y have been isolated and studied. The influence of the experimental conditions of synthesis on the superconductivity has been especially studied for the composition La1.7Bi0.1Sr0.2CuO4-y; it is shown thatTcdecreases as oxygen is introduced into the matrix, likely due to the partial oxidation of Bi(III) to Bi(V). The highTcvalue observed for one sample (Tc?42 K), as compared withTc?38 K of La1.8Sr0.2CuO4-y suggests that bismuth is also a potential candidate for improving the superconducting properties in these oxides.

165. Suppression of the Mass Enhancement in CeB6in High Magnetic Fields

Abstract

The effective mass of the itinerant electrons in the Kondo lattice system CeB6is found to be strongly field dependent. Measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect at temperatures down to 60 mK in steady magnetic fields up to 22 T show a change of more than 100% in the cyclotron effective mass, decreasing with increasing field. The origin of the effect is not known but it is noted that a field of about 10 T corresponds to the energy scales in the system.
