Adolf Hitler’s protective squadrons (Schutzstaffel), commonly known as the SS, owed its dynamic development to Heinrich Himmler, who during the Third Reich transformed it into an elite formation. The SS became both an instrument of executive power and a political and military power base for the National Socialist regime. Since Himmler was appointed the Reichsführer, the SS became the most crucial project for him as on this very formation he based his concept of the racial family community which he meticulously implemented over the years.Proclaiming the theory that “humans can be successfully bred just as animals are”, Himmler dreamed of building a racially pure society with genetic traits most valued by the National Socialist power. To carry out this project Himmler, vested with the power of the Reichsführer, introduced a range of various directives; only candidates who met racial criteria set by Himmler could enter the ranks of the SS. These rigorous requirements later extended also to candidates for future wives of the SS men. Over the next years all these criteria were to guarantee a construction of racially elitist kinship of families as well as the genetic continuity of the most desirable traits. Himmler did not just claim the right to issue marriage permits to his subordinate SS men, but he also began to interfere with their family lives, expecting couples to produce a specified number of offspring to the community of the SS. He also demanded the SS families to adapt to specific social roles.This paper aims to describe theoretical and practical prerogatives of Heinrich Himmler’s actions to build the racial elite of the German nation based on the power of the SS. In this study I also attempt to answer the question whether Himmler’s directives were actually observed and, to what extent these practical guidelines proved to be effective; how they influenced the number of marriages concluded by SS men and the number of children born in these relationships. Znana dziś pod skrótem SS organizacja sztafet ochronnych Adolfa Hitlera (Schutzstaffel) zawdzięcza swój prężny rozwój Heinrichowi Himmlerowi, który w latach istnienia Trzeciej Rzeszy uczynił z niej elitarną formację, stanowiącą tak narzędzie władzy wykonawczej, jak i zaplecze polityczno-wojskowe narodowosocjalistycznego reżimu. Nie ulega wątpliwości, że SS była dla Himmlera projektem o niezwykle istotnym znaczeniu, ponieważ to na jej gruncie, już od momentu objęcia funkcji Reichsführera, realizował koncepcję rasowej wspólnoty rodów.Głosząc teorię o tym, że „ludzie mogą być hodowani z równym powodzeniem jak hoduje się zwierzęta”, Himmler marzył o wybudowaniu czystego rasowo społeczeństwa, mającego najbardziej cenione genetycznie przez narodowosocjalistyczną władzę cechy. By zrealizować ten projekt, jako Reichsführer wprowadził sekwencję różnego rodzaju wytycznych, dzięki którym w szeregi SS mieli być przyjmowani wyłącznie kandydaci spełniający ustanowione przez niego rasowe kryteria. Z czasem te restrykcyjne wymogi zaczęto stosować również wobec kandydatek na przyszłe żony SS-manów, co na przestrzeni kolejnych lat miało zagwarantować zarówno wybudowanie elitarnej pod względem rasowym wspólnoty rodów, jak i ciągłość genetyczną najbardziej pożądanych cech. Himmler rościł sobie prawo nie tylko do wydawania pozwoleń na zawarcie małżeństwa przez podległych mu SS-manów, lecz także zaczął ingerować w ich życie rodzinne, oczekując od par wchodzących w skład wspólnoty rodów konkretnej dzietności czy też dostosowania się do określonych ról społecznych.Artykuł koncentruje się na opisaniu założeń teoretycznych i praktycznych działań Heinricha Himmlera mających na celu wybudowanie rasowej elity niemieckiego narodu na gruncie podległej mu SS. W tekście podjęto także próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie o to, czy rzeczywiście przestrzegano ustanowionych przez Himmlera wytycznych i na ile te praktyczne założenia okazały się skuteczne (w jakim stopniu wpłynęły na liczbę zawieranych przez SS-manów małżeństw oraz na liczbę rodzących się w tych związkach dzieci)?

Wegen der Machtübernahme der Nationalsozialisten in Deutschland vertrieben, emigrierte Heinrich Mann am 21. Februar 1933, im Alter von fast 62 Jahren, nach Frankreich. Wie konnte Heinrich Mann die Kontinuität seines intellektuellen Engagements vereinbaren mit der Lage des Exils und inwiefern wurde sein Engagement durch diese Situation neu definiert? Heinrich Mann verstand sehr schnell, dass er die Ziele seines Engagements neu anpassen musste, um es in fremden Land fortsetzen zu können; dies tat er seit den ersten Monaten des Exils, die er in Frankreich verbrachte, durch die von ihm veröffentlichten Essays. Die Stadt Nizza, in der er sich niederließ, ist der Ort des Schriftstellers, Paris bleibt der Ort des intellektuellen Engagements. Die Historiographie dieser Zeit hat oft nur eine gewisse Naivität der Figur und ihre Instrumentalisierung durch die Kommunistische Partei bewahrt, was relativiert werden muss. Der während der Emigration entstandene Roman Heinrichs IV. gehört bis heute zu den größten Texten der deutschen Exilgemeinde. After the Nazis had come to power in Germany, Heinrich Mann at the age of almost sixty-two years old had to go into exile to France on February 21th, 1933. How could he adapt his intellectual commitment to the new status of exile and to what extend was his commitment in France redetermined by the life in exile? Heinrich Mann understood quickly that he had to readjust the objectives of his commitment in order to continue in exile. He implemented it already in the first months he spent in France in the essays and texts he published. The city of Nice was the place where he lived and wrote, Paris remained the place for the intellectual commitment. The historiography of this period has often imputed to him a kind of naivety of character and the exploitation by the German communist party, but this point has to be relativised. Young Henry of Navarre, written during his stay in France is one of the most beautiful texts produced by the German community in exile. Chassé par l'arrivée au pouvoir des nazis en Allemagne, Heinrich Mann a presque soixante-deux ans lorsqu'il émigre en France, le 21 février 1933. Comment Heinrich Mann a-t-il pu concilier la continuité de son engagement intellectuel avec la situation même de l'exil et dans quelle mesure son engagement fut-il redéfini par cette situation? Heinrich Mann a compris très vite qu'il lui fallait réadapter les objectifs de son engagement pour pouvoir le poursuivre en terre étrangère ; c'est ce qu'il fit dès les premiers mois passés en France, par les essais qu'il publia. La ville de Nice, où il s'établit, est le lieu de l'écrivain, Paris reste le lieu de l'engagement intellectuel. L'historiographie sur cette époque n'a souvent retenu du personnage qu'une certaine naïveté, et son instrumentalisation par le parti communiste, point qui mérite d'être relativisé. Le roman d'Henri IV, écrit pendant l’émigration, reste l'un des plus grands textes produits par la communauté allemande en exil.

Die NS-Prozesse in der Bundesrepublik waren ein Forum, in dem bereits in der frühen Nachkriegszeit die Verbrechen des Nationalsozialismus verhandelt wurden. Dabei hatten die Holocaust-Überlebenden und ehemaligen KZ-Häftlinge als Zeugen eine besonders kontroverse Aufgabe, die von der Forschung jedoch bislang kaum beachtet wurde. Vielfach lag es allein an ihnen, mit ihren Berichten die Angeklagten zu überführen. Zugleich waren sie teils massivem Misstrauen der deutschen Justiz ausgesetzt, die die Überlebenden für zu parteiisch hielt, um objektive Einschätzungen abzugeben. Die Befragungen und die Konfrontation mit den Tätern stellten zudem eine hohe Belastung dar. Dennoch sagten Tausende Überlebende aus freien Stücken aus und nahmen die Strapazen auf sich, um die strafrechtliche Verfolgung der Verbrechen voranzubringen. Katharina Stengel untersucht am Beispiel von vier Auschwitz-Prozessen aus drei Jahrzehnten, welche Bedeutung die Opfer für die NS-Prozesse hatten, wie die Juristen mit ihnen und ihren unfassbaren Berichten umgingen, wie die Zeuginnen und Zeugen selbst vor Gericht agierten, welche Anliegen sie verfolgten und welche Schlüsse sie aus ihren Erfahrungen zogen. Dabei werden unterschiedliche theoretische Konzeptionen von Zeugenschaft mit den Selbstauskünften der Überlebenden in Bezug gesetzt und diskutiert.

Créée en 1925 comme un programme de bourses financées par le ministère allemand des Affaires étrangères, la Fondation Alexander von Humboldt a profondément évolué jusqu’en 1945. Holger Impekoven dévoile comment son parcours s’inscrit dans l’histoire de la politique culturelle extérieure de l’Allemagne, et permet dans le même temps d’éclairer l’histoire politique des étudiants étrangers accueillis dans ce pays au cours de cette période. Created in 1925 as a scholarship program funded by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation changed profoundly until 1945. Holger Impekoven reveals how its evolutions are inscribed in the history of the foreign cultural policy of Germany, and at the same time shed light on the political history of foreign students hosted in this country during this period.

Der Datensatz besteht aus 131 XLSX-Tabellen mit über 1.100 Zeitreihen zu verschiedenen Themen für Deutschland in den verschiedenen Grenzen, beginnend frühestens 1834, der Gründung des Zollvereins. Anlass war eine in Zusammenarbeit mit der Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung erstellte Publikation "Deutschland in Daten". Das Projekt beschränkte sich dabei auf die Zusammenstellung publizierter Daten 1. in langer Zeitreihenperspektive und 2. ohne regionale Differenzierung. Ziel des Projektes war es, verstreut vorhandene historische Zeitreihen zu identifizieren und zusammenzustellen und bei vertretbarem Aufwand diese zu ergänzen bzw. zu aktualisieren. Dabei sollten die bestmöglichen bzw. wichtigsten Daten zusammengestellt werden. Es sollten dabei nur solche Zeitreihen aufgenommen werden, für die zumindest theoretisch für den gesamten Zeitraum ab 1834 Werte vorhanden sein können. Wesentlicher Aspekt des Konzeptes war die Kombination der Zusammenstellung der Daten mit einer kritischen Kommentierung und Begleitung des Auswahlprozesses durch ausgewiesene Experten. Die Daten wurden von über 40 Personen an 25 Standorten bearbeitet und zusammengestellt. Insgesamt wurden 24 Themen bearbeitet (in Klammern die verantwortlichen Autoren): 1. The current purpose to compile the data was a publication issued in cooperation with the German Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für Politische Bildung). The project was limited to the compilation of published data, in the perspective of long time series and without regional differentiation within Germany. The aim of the project was to identify and compile scattered existing historical time series, and to complement or update them at reasonable expense. In doing so, the best possible or most important data should be compiled. Time series were only to be included, if data for the entire period was at least theoretically available. An integral aspect of the concept of our project is the combination of data with critical commentaries of the time series by established expert scientists. Статья посвящена двенадцатитоновым операм, созданным и исполненным в Третьем рейхе: «Михаэль Кольхаас» Пауля фон Кленау и «Жертва» Винфрида Циллига. Вопреки категорическому неприятию Новой музыки, огульной критике атональности как патологически вредного для арийской расы явления ряд двенадцатитоновых сочинений были благосклонно приняты критикой в силу идеологически приемлемого сюжета и квазитональной трактовки додекафонной техники. Они обозначили иной, не шенберговский путь разработки 12-тоновой техники, который стал альтернативой исканиям Шенберга. Датский композитор Пауль фон Кленау (1883–1946) смог обойти политические барьеры и доказать, что его «тонально определенная 12-тоновая музыка» не имеет ничего общего с атональностью. Первоисточником либретто его оперы стала идеологически безупречная новелла немецкого классика Генриха фон Клейста «Михаэль Кольхаас». Двенадцатитоновость в опере оттеняется беспрецедентным обилием чужой музыки: Кленау цитирует хоралы, народные песни, танцы, напев Вальтера фон Фогельвейде и Kyrie из мессы Палестрины “Emendemus”, доминантой стиля и драматургии служит романтизм. Ученик Шенберга Винфрид Циллиг (1905–1963) был партийным функционером в Третьем рейхе. Сюжет его оперы вписывался в рамки идеологии: один из участников экспедиции на Южный полюс жертвует собой ради спасения товарищей. Додекафония в опере также звучит квазитонально: из серии путем трансформаций выводятся тональные гармонические структуры. Одноактная опера Циллига соединяет в себе традиции Шенберга и Стравинского, большая роль хора позволяет ее отнести к жанру хоровой оперы., The article is devoted to the twelve-tone operas created and performed in the Third Reich: “Michael Kohlhaas” by Paul von Klenau and “Das Opfer” by Winfried Zillig. Despite the categorical rejection of New Music, the sweeping criticism of atonality as a pathologically harmful phenomenon for the Aryan race, a number of twelve-tone compositions were favorably received by critics due to the ideologically acceptable plot and quasi-tonal interpretation of the dodecaphone technique. They outlined a different, non-Schoenberg way of developing 12-tone technology, which became an alternative to Schoenberg’s search. The Danish composer Paul von Klenau (1883–1946) was able to bypass ideological barriers and prove that his “tonally defined 12-tone music” has nothing to do with atonality. The original source of the libretto of his opera was the ideologically impeccable novella by the German classic Heinrich von Kleist “Michael Kohlhaas”. The twelve-tone quality in the opera is set off by an unprecedented abundance of foreign music: Klenau quotes chorales, folk songs, dances, the melody of Walter von Vogelweide and Kyrie from Palestrina's mass “Emendemus”, romanticism serves as the dominant style and dramaturgy. Schoenberg's student Winfried Zillig (1905–1963) was a party functionary in the Third Reich. The plot of his opera also fit into the framework of ideology: one of the participants of the expedition to the South Pole sacrifices himself to save his comrades. Dodecaphony in the opera also sounds quasi-tonal: tonal harmonic structures are derived from the series by transformations. This research paper critically examines the role and impact of media in Weimar and Nazi Germany. The Weimar Republic (1919-1933) and the subsequent Nazi regime (1933-1945) were crucial periods in German history marked by significant political, social, and cultural transformations. Media played a pivotal role during these periods, shaping public opinion, disseminating propaganda, and influencing events. This paper investigates the dynamic relationship between media and power, exploring the extent to which media contributed to the rise of the Nazi Party and the subsequent totalitarian rule. This research aims to provide insights into the complex interplay between media, politics, and society in this tumultuous era by critically analyzing the nature of media censorship, control, and manipulation.

In this article, with the help of a detailed analysis of the documents of the Ukrainian nationalist underground, which were issued during the Second World War, the topic of the involvement of the "third forces", namely the Third Reich and the Soviet Union, in the Ukrainian-Polish conflict of 1939 – 1945 is raised. Based on the analyzed reports , social and political reviews, etc., the methods used by the Germans and Bolsheviks to incite mutual hatred between Ukrainians and Poles are singled out. It was found out that the Germans created special police departments for their own purposes, where they recruited both Poles and Ukrainians, provided them with weapons, encouraged the Poles to rob the Ukrainian population, and often practiced handing over Ukrainian jobs or farms to Poles, and vice versa. It has been investigated that the Soviets, in turn, contributed to the creation of Polish partisan units, in some places transferred the responsibility for the murders of Poles committed by them to Ukrainians and gave Poles ammunition to fight against Ukrainians. Particular attention is paid to the contemporary phenomenon of informants by Poles against Ukrainians, to which the Ukrainian nationalist underground reacted by distributing warning leaflets addressed to Poles. The article also analyzes those documents in which the Germans and the Soviets are called the enemies of the Ukrainian and Polish peoples and in which the awareness of Ukrainian nationalists that the German and Bolshevik regimes were interested in the Ukrainian-Polish confrontation is traced at the same time. It has been suggested that the strengthening of enmity between Ukrainians and Poles on the part of the Germans and the Soviets could be based in some places on the fear of the deployment of Ukrainian and Polish liberation movements with the aim of creating their own independent states. It was concluded that the documents of the Ukrainian nationalist underground are an informative and noteworthy source in the context of the Ukrainian-Polish struggle during the Second World War. Scientific works related to the specified topic were involved in writing the article. It was found that until now there is no comprehensive scientific work devoted to the issues raised in the article. This requires further research on the impact of the Third Reich on the USSR on the Ukrainian-Polish inter-ethnic conflict of 1939 – 1945., У даній статті за допомогою детального аналізу документів українського націоналістичного підпілля, котрі були видані в роки Другої світової війни, порушується тема причетності «третіх сил», а саме Третього Райху та Радянського Союзу до українсько-польського конфлікту 1939 – 1945 рр. На основі проаналізованих звітів, суспільно-політичних оглядів та ін., виокремлено методи, до яких вдавалися німці та більшовики задля розпалювання взаємної ненависті між українцями та поляками. З’ясовано, що німці для своїх цілей створювали спеціальні відділи поліції, куди набирали і поляків, і українців, забезпечували їх зброєю, заохочували поляків до пограбувань українського населення та часто практикували передачу полякам робочих місць або ж господарств українців і навпаки. Досліджено, що совєти, в свою чергу, сприяли створенню польських партизанських загонів, подекуди перекладали відповідальність за вчинені ними вбивства поляків на українців та давали полякам амуніцію для боротьби з українцями. Окрему увагу приділено тогочасному явищу донощицтва поляків на українців, на яке українське націоналістичне підпілля реагувало поширенням попереджувальних листівок, адресованих полякам. У статті також проаналізовано ті документи, в яких німців та совєтів названо ворогами українського та польського народів і в яких одночасно прослідковується усвідомлення українськими націоналістами того, що німецький та більшовицький режим були зацікавлені в українсько-польському протистоянні. Було висунуто припущення, що підсилення з німецького й радянського боку ворожнечі між українцями та поляками могло подекуди ґрунтуватись на побоюванні розгортання українського і польського визвольного рухів з метою створення власних самостійних держав. Зроблено висновки, що документи українського націоналістичного підпілля є інформативним та вартим уваги джерелом в контексті українсько-польської боротьби років Другої світової війни. Для написання статі було залучено наукові праці, які стосуються зазначеної теми. З’ясовано, що дотепер немає комплексної наукової роботи, присвяченої проблематиці, яку порушено у статті. Це вимагає проведення подальших досліджень стосовно впливу Третього Райху на СРСР на українсько-польське міжетнічне протистояння 1939 – 1945 рр.

Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die Rolle der Medien bei der Verbreitung von Propaganda und Ideologie im Dritten Reich und im Unabhängigen Staat Kroatien zu beleuchten. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf der Analyse des Umsetzungsprozesses nationalsozialistischer Propaganda und ideologischer Aspekte in den Medien, auf der Gestaltung der Medienpolitik nach den Richtlinien der genannten Regime, auf den Methoden, die gegen Kritiker und politisch Andersdenkende eingesetzt wurden, sowie auf der Feststellung von Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschieden zwischen den Medienkulturen des nationalsozialistischen Deutschlands und des USK. Im Falle beider Staaten handelt es sich um Regime, die den Personenkult (Hitler und Pavelić), die rassische Reinheit, die Vernichtung des gemeinsamen Feindes und den Widerstand gegen Vielfalt und Meinungsfreiheit propagierten. Es handelt sich um zwei historische totalitäre Regime, die den heutigen und künftigen Generationen als Mahnung dienen werden, dass sich eine solche Politik der Zerstörung und Intoleranz niemals wiederholen darf und dass sie in Zukunft erkannt und gestoppt werden muss, bevor sie in der Öffentlichkeit relevant wird. The aim of this paper is to examine the role of media in spreading propaganda and ideology in the Third Reich and in the Independent State of Croatia. The emphasis is placed on the analysis of the implementation process of national-socialist propaganda and ideological aspects in the media, on the shaping of media policy according to the directions of the aforementioned regimes, on the methods used against critics and political dissidents, as well as on the observation of similarities and differences between the media cultures of national-socialist Germany and the NDH. In the case of both states, these are regimes that propagated the cult of personality (Hitler and Pavelić), the racial purity of their nation, the annihilation of the enemy and resistance towards diversity and freedom of expression. These are two historical totalitarian regimes that will serve as a reminder to present and future generations that such policies of destruction and intolerance must never be repeated, and that they must be recognized and stopped in the future before they become relevant in the public sphere.
