The study identifies the influencing factors of the performance of agricultural cooperatives (ACs) in the Mekong Delta (MD) of Vietnam. The study used a disproportionate stratified sampling method, with 308 valid samples collected from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development in the districts and the Management Boards of ACs in 9 provinces in MD. Performance of AC is measured against five indicators, namely return on sales (ROS), return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), responsiveness to cooperative members’ needs, and generation of jobs. Multivariate regression method was used for data analysis. The estimated results identified four factors that are positively correlated with cooperatives’ performance (namely management competency; contributed capital; membership size; and members’ participation) while indicating interaction between independent variables (management competency and contributed capital; management competency and membership size) in the relationship to performance of cooperatives. The study findings showed that the degree of influence of management competency on performance of cooperatives in fruit tree farming is always higher compared with those in rice farming. In addition, a number of recommendations are proposed to help the ACs' management boards make appropriate improvements to the support policy and performance evaluation indicators of the cooperatives. Cooperatives should also innovate in the use and optimization of resources.

Well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma rarely spreads to soft tissues. Thyroid carcinoma arising within a mature cystic teratoma is even rarer. We report an extremely rare case of synchronous follicular thyroid carcinoma arising within a mature cystic ovarian teratoma and stage IV differentiated thyroid carcinoma. A 62-year-old woman who lived in an iodine-deficient area was accidentally diagnosed with an ovarian cyst during a radiological metastatic work-up for thyroid cancer. Following laparoscopic left salpingo-oophorectomy, histopathological examination revealed a follicular thyroid carcinoma arising within a mature cystic teratoma. After that, total thyroidectomy and surgical resection of the soft tissue lesion in the supraclavicular fossa were performed, and the patient received subsequent 131 I ablation therapy, but the disease progression was recorded 3 months later. We believe that iodine deficiency plays a role in the malignant transformation of thyroid tissues within a mature cystic teratoma. In elderly individuals with significant metastases, radioactive iodine therapy is ineffective.

Summary: Background: In most low-to-middle-income countries, HIV control at the population level among people who inject drugs (PWID) remains a major challenge. We aimed to demonstrate that an innovative intervention can identify HIV-positive PWID in the community who are not treated efficiently, and get them treated efficiently. Methods: Between 2016 and 2020, we implemented an intervention consisting of mass HIV screening of PWID using three annual respondent-driven sampling surveys (RDSS) and a post-intervention evaluation RDSS in community-based organisation (CBO) sites, coupled with peer support to facilitate/improve access to antiretroviral and methadone therapy in Haiphong, Vietnam. The primary outcome was the proportion of identified uncontrolled HIV-positive PWID who achieved viral control. We also estimated the potential effect of the intervention on the proportion of PWID with HIV RNA >1000 copies/mL among all PWID during the study period. Findings: Over the three RDSS, 3150 different PWID were screened, i.e. two-thirds of the estimated population size. They all injected heroin, their median age was of 39 years, 95% were male, 26.5% were HIV-infected, and 78.6% of the latter had HIV RNA ≤1000 copies/mL. Introduction: The expensive modern therapeutic regimens for advanced lung cancer (LC) stages have been recently approved. We evaluated whether low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) LC screening of high-risk Albertans is cost saving. Methods: We used a decision analytical modeling technique with a health system perspective and a time horizon of 3 years to compare benefits associated with reduced health service utilization (HSU) from earlier diagnosis to the costs of screening. Using patient-level data, HSU costs by stage of disease were estimated for patients with LC, including inpatient, outpatient, and physician services, and costs for prescription drugs and cancer treatments. Results: Of 101,000 people aged 55 to 74 years eligible for screening, an estimated 88,476 scans would be performed in Alberta in 3 years. Given LDCT sensitivity and specificity of 90.5% and 93.1%, respectively, we estimated that a stage shift toward earlier diagnosis would be expected whereby 43% more patients would be identified at stage 1 or 2 as compared with without screening. The estimated cost of screening is $35.6 million (M), whereas the stage shift associated with screening would avoid $42M in HSU costs. The net cost avoidance associated with screening is therefore $6.65M. The probability for the screening to be cost saving is estimated at 72%. Conclusions: This study has revealed that LDCT LC screening is likely to be cost saving in Alberta. Adoption of this program into the provincial health care system is worth considering provided constraints in the system related to surgical capacity and CT wait times could be addressed.

The relationship between genotype and phenotype plays a crucial role in determining the function and robustness of biological systems. Here the evolution progresses through the change in genotype, whereas the selection is based on the phenotype, and the genotype-phenotype relation also evolves. The theory for such phenotypic evolution remains poorly developed, in contrast to evolution under the fitness landscape determined by genotypes. Here we provide a statistical-physics formulation of this problem by introducing replicas for genotype and phenotype. We apply it to an evolution model in which phenotypes are given by spin configurations; genotypes are an interaction matrix for spins to give the Hamiltonian, and the fitness depends only on the configuration of a subset of spins called the target. We describe the interplay between the genetic variations and phenotypic variances by noise in this model by our approach that extends the replica theory for spin glasses to include a spin replica for phenotypes and a coupling replica for genotypes. Within this framework we obtain a phase diagram of the evolved phenotypes against the noise and selection pressure, where each phase is distinguished by the fitness and overlaps for genotypes and phenotypes. Among the phases, a robust fitted phase, relevant to biological evolution, is achieved under the intermediate level of noise (temperature), where robustnesses to noise and to genetic mutation are correlated, as a result of replica symmetry. We also find a tradeoff between maintaining a high fitness level of phenotype and acquiring a robust pattern of genes as well as the dependence of this tradeoff on the ratio between the size of the functional (target) part to that of the remaining nonfunctional (non-target) one. The selection pressure needed to achieve high fitness increases with the fraction of target spins.

Shortly after its emergence, Omicron and its sub-variants have quickly replaced the Delta variant during the current COVID-19 outbreaks in Vietnam and around the world. To enable the rapid and timely detection of existing and future variants for epidemiological surveillance and diagnostic applications, a robust, economical real-time PCR method that can specifically and sensitively detect and identify multiple different circulating variants is needed. The principle of target- failure (TF) real-time PCR is simple. If a target contains a deletion mutation, then there is a mismatch with the primer or probe, and the real-time PCR will fail to amplify the target. In this study, we designed and evaluated a novel multiplex RT real-time PCR (MPL RT-rPCR) based on the principle of target failure to detect and identify different variants of SARS-CoV-2 directly from the nasopharyngeal swabs collected from COVID-19 suspected cases. The primers and probes were designed based on the specific deletion mutations of current circulating variants. To evaluate the results from the MPL RT-rPCR, this study also designed nine pairs of primers for amplifying and sequencing of nine fragments from the S gene containing mutations of known variants. We demonstrated that (i) our MPL RT-rPCR was able to accurately detect multiple variants that existed in a single sample; (ii) the limit of detection of the MPL RT-rPCR in the detection of the variants ranged from 1 to 10 copies for Omicron BA.2 and BA.5, and from 10 to 100 copies for Delta, Omicron BA.1, recombination of BA.1 and BA.2, and BA.4; (iii) between January and September 2022, Omicron BA.1 emerged and co-existed with the Delta variant during the early period, both of which were rapidly replaced by Omicron BA.2, and this was followed by Omicron BA.5 as the dominant variant toward the later period. Our results showed that SARS-CoV-2 variants rapidly evolved within a short period of time, proving the importance of a robust, economical, and easy-to-access method not just for epidemiological surveillance but also for diagnoses around the world where SARS-CoV-2 variants remain the WHO’s highest health concern. Our highly sensitive and specific MPL RT-rPCR is considered suitable for further implementation in many laboratories, especially in developing countries.

Little is known about the role of neutrophil CD64 (nCD64) in detecting sepsis early in Asian populations. We examined the cut-off and predictive values of nCD64 for diagnosing sepsis in Vietnamese intensive care units (ICU) patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted at the ICU of Cho Ray Hospital between January 2019 and April 2020. All 104 newly admitted patients were included. Sensitivity (Sens), specificity (Spec), positive and negative predictive values (PPV and NPV), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were calculated to compare the diagnostic values of nCD64 with those of procalcitonin (PCT) and white blood cell (WBC) for sepsis. The median nCD64 value in sepsis patients was statistically higher than that of non-sepsis patients (3106 [1970–5200] vs. 745 [458–906] molecules/cell, p < 0.001). ROC analysis found that the AUC value of nCD64 was 0.92, which was higher than that of PCT (0.872), WBC (0.637), and nCD64 combined, with WBC (0.906) and nCD64 combined with WBC and PCT (0.919), but lower than that of nCD64 combined with PCT (0.924). With an AUC value of 0.92, the nCD64 index of 1311 molecules/cell-detected sepsis with 89.9% Sens, 85.7% Spec, 92.5% PPV, and 81.1% NPV. nCD64 can be a useful marker for early sepsis diagnosis in ICU patients. nCD64 combined with PCT may improve the diagnostic accuracy.

This study investigates methane emissions in the mangrove forests of Xuan Thuy National Park in Vietnam, examining seasonal variations and the influence of environmental factors. Data from the field measurements present methane flux rates ranging from 0.01 to 10.42 mg m-2 day-1, are substantially lower than the default estimations recommended by IPCC guidelines. The study highlights discrepancies between actual field measurements and suggested default values, emphasizing the necessity for site-specific monitoring to avoid overestimating greenhouse gas emissions, particularly in mangrove areas. The analysis reveals strong correlations between methane flux and environmental parameters. Factors such as water pH, turbidity, temperature, and nitrogen content significantly influence methane emissions. The study emphasizes the interconnectedness of various greenhouse gas emissions within mangrove ecosystems and underlines the importance of accurate, location-specific data in environmental assessments and policy-making. Social entrepreneurship is a topic of current interest to scientists. Social enterprises have helped to solve the remaining problems in society. Universities play an essential role in developing future social entrepreneurs by providing relevant knowledge to students. This study assesses the relationship between knowledge and social entrepreneurial intention through data collected from 1000 Vietnamese students. The survey was conducted in September 2021 using a questionnaire designed on google docs. The hypotheses were analyzed by partial least squares structural equation modeling with SmartPLS 3. The research results confirmed the importance of knowledge for students' social entrepreneurial intention formation. In particular, the entrepreneurship education and prior experience equipped in the university will help students gain confidence and have a positive attitude towards starting a social enterprise. Introduction The emergence of colistin resistance threatens the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. Methods In this study, in vitro development of colistin resistance was investigated using comparative phenotypic and proteomic analysis of P. aeruginosa ATCC 9027, its 14-day colistin sub-MIC exposed strain (Col-E1), and 10-day antibiotic-free cultured Col-E1 strain (Col-E2). Antibiotic susceptibility, morphology, virulence factors, and proteomic changes were assessed using disc-diffusion, agar-based, spectrophotometry, SEM, and iTRAQ-LC-MS/MS methods. Results Colistin-exposed strains decreased susceptibility to colistin while remaining susceptible to other antibiotics. Col-E1 reduced the cell lengths by 17.67% and the colony size by 36.16% compared to the initial strain. The reduction remained in Col-E2. The pyocyanin production was reduced in Col-E1 (p=0.025, Tukey HSD) and increased again in Col-E2 (p=0.005, Tukey HSD). In contrast, no significant changes in elastase, protease, rhamnolipid, pyoverdine, and biofilm production were observed (p>0.05, Tukey HSD). In Col-E1, the proteome analysis showed 135 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) of which 94 DEPs (69.23%) maintained their expression change in Col-E2. Among DEPs, 82 were involved in metabolism and protein synthesis. Some DEPs (6/135) played a role in stress response such as GrpE (fold change: 14.93) and Hmp (fold change: 12.08). In particular, membrane proteins like OprD, DdlB, and OprI showed significant colistin response with fold change of -8.47, 6.43 and 6.19, respectively. Conclusions In summary, colistin response in P. aeruginosa seemed to affect morphology, production of pyocyanin, and proteins of metabolism, protein synthesis, stress response and membrane. In this study, we present a novel approach to injection molding, focusing on the strength of weld lines in polyamide 6 (PA6) composite samples. By implementing a mold temperature significantly higher than the typical molding practice, which rarely exceeds 100°C, we assess the effects of advanced mold temperature management. The research introduces a newly engineered mold structure specifically designed for localized mold heating, distinguishing it as the 'novel cavity.' This innovative design is compared against traditional molding methods to highlight the improvements in weld line strength at elevated mold temperatures. To optimize the molding parameters, we apply an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) in conjunction with a Genetic Algorithm (GA). Our findings reveal that the optimal ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation values are achieved with a filling time of 3.4 seconds, packing time of 0.8 seconds, melt temperature of 246°C, and a novel high mold temperature of 173°C. A specific sample demonstrated the best molding parameters at a filling time of 3.4 seconds, packing time of 0.4 seconds, melt temperature of 244°C, and mold temperature of 173°C, resulting in an elongation value of 582.6% and a UTS of 62.3 MPa. The most influential factor on the PA6 sample's UTS and elongation at the weld line was found to be the melt temperature, while the filling time had the least impact. SEM analysis of the fracture surfaces revealed ductile fractures with rough surfaces and grooves, indicative of the weld line areas' bonding quality. These insights pave the way for significant improvements in injection molding conditions, potentially revolutionizing the manufacturing process by enhancing the structural integrity of the weld lines in molded PA6 samples. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), synthesized through controlled microplasma treatment of orange juice, exhibit unique luminescent characteristics. The impact of synthesis time on particle size was investigated. Deconvoluted emission spectra displayed broad bands, peaking at an excitation wavelength of 350 nm for CQD sizes of 2.06, 2.4, and 3.09 nm, indicating multiple fluorescence peaks. This suggests a mixture of CQDs with different excitation energies on their surfaces. Luminescence kinetics unveiled three exponential decay components with time constants of 2.73, 4.61, and 3.27 ns, indicating multiple luminescent centers. Emission behavior affected by excitation wavelengths ranging from 350 to 490 nm suggests that quantum transition probabilities are influenced by impurities or defects. These findings emphasize the size‐dependent optical properties and exciton self‐trapping (EST) emission of CQDs. The calculation of the Huang‐Rhys factor S values underscores the profound influence of carrier‐phonon coupling and the Huang‐Rhys factor on the emergence of ESTs within CQDs. Understanding these interactions is crucial for fully utilizing the capabilities of CQDs in applications spanning optoelectronics, sensors, bioimaging, and various technological fields. Weld line defects, commonly occurring during the plastic product manufacturing process, are caused by the merging of two opposing streams of molten plastic. The presence of weld lines harms the product's aesthetic appeal and durability. This study uses artificial neural networks to forecast the ultimate tensile strength of a PA6 composite incorporating 30% glass fibers (GFs). Data were collected from tensile strength tests and the technical parameters of injection molding. The packing pressure factor is the one that significantly affects the tensile strength value. The melt temperature has a significant impact on the product's strength as well. In contrast, the filling time factor has less impact than other factors. According to the scanning electron microscope result, the smooth fracture surface indicates the weld line area's high brittleness. Fiber bridging across the weld line area is evident in numerous fractured GF pieces on the fracture surface, which enhances this area. Tensile strength values vary based on the injection parameters, from 65.51 MPa to 73.19 MPa. In addition, the experimental data comprise the outcomes of the artificial neural networks (ANNs), with the maximum relative variation being only 4.63%. The results could improve the PA6 reinforced with 30% GF injection molding procedure with weld lines. In further research, mold temperature improvement should be considered an exemplary method for enhancing the weld line strength. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
