Reptile behaviour and welfare are understudied in comparison with mammals. In this study, behavioural data on three species (Astrochelys radiata, Stigmochelys pardalis, Aldabrachelys gigantea) of tortoises were recorded before and after an environmental change which was anticipated to be positive in nature. The environmental changes differed for each population, but included a substantial increase in enclosure size, the addition of substrate material, and a change in handling procedure. A tortoise-specific ethogram was created to standardise data collection. Focal behaviour sampling was used to collect behavioural data. Changes in the duration of performance of co-occupant interaction and object interaction in the leopard (Stigmochelys pardalis) and Aldabra (Aldabrachelys gigantea) tortoises were observed following the environmental changes. The Shannon–Weiner diversity index did not yield a significant increase after the changes but had a numerical increase which was relatively greater for the leopard tortoise group, which had experienced the greatest environmental change. The leopard tortoises also demonstrated changes in a greater number of behaviours compared to the other species, and this was sustained over the study period. However, this included a behaviour indicative of negative affect: aggression. Whilst we are unable to conclude that welfare was improved by the management changes, there are suggestions that behavioural diversity increased, and some promotion of positive social behaviours occurred. We report the results of standardized surveys to determine Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) direct mortality and injury as a result of the 2020 Cottonwood Trail Fire in the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, Utah. We encountered 14 tortoise remains attributed to fire, one fire-injured tortoise, and three live tortoises within a 250-ha area of burned tortoise habitat. We used an infrared-equipped trail camera to monitor the health of a fire-injured tortoise at a burrow site. The camera recorded the first observation of a desert woodrat (Neotoma lepida) feeding on a live, fire-injured desert tortoise. We hypothesize that desert woodrat carnivory of fire-injured tortoises in burrows might contribute to indirect (and undetected) fire-related tortoise mortality. Captive breeding programs benefit from genetic analyses that identify relatedness between individuals, assign parentage to offspring, and track levels of genetic diversity. Monitoring these parameters across breeding cycles is critical to the success of a captive breeding program as it allows conservation managers to iteratively evaluate and adjust program structure. However, in practice, genetic tracking of breeding outcomes is rarely conducted. Here, we examined the first three offspring cohorts (2017–2020) of the genetically informed captive breeding program for the Floreana Island Galapagos giant tortoise, Chelonoidis niger. This captive breeding program is unique as the Floreana tortoise has been extinct since the 1800s, but its genome persists, in part, in the form of living hybrids with the extant Volcano Wolf tortoise, C. becki. Breeding over the study period took place at the Galapagos National Park Directorate breeding facility in four corrals, each containing three females and two males. Using 17 microsatellite markers, we were able to assign parentage to 94 of the 98 offspring produced over the study period. We observe that despite the addition of more founders since the pilot breeding program, the effective population size remains low, and changes to the arrangements of breeding corrals may be necessary to encourage more equal reproductive output from the males. Lymphocytes are usually interpreted as functioning in adaptive immunity despite evidence that large proportions of these cells (B1 lymphocytes) have innate immune functions, including phagocytosis, in the peripheral blood of ectothermic vertebrates. We used a recently optimized assay to assess environmental influences on phagocytic activity of lymphocytes isolated from the Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii). Previous studies suggest that lymphocytes in this species are associated with reduced pathogen loads, especially in cooler climates, and that lymphocyte numbers fluctuate seasonally. Thus, we evaluated thermal dependence of phagocytic activity in vitro and across seasons. While B1 lymphocytes appeared to be cold-adapted and always increased phagocytosis at cool temperatures, we also found evidence of thermal acclimation. Tortoises upregulated these lymphocytes during cooler seasons in the fall as their preferred body temperatures dropped, and phagocytosis also increased in efficiency during this same time. Like many other ectothermic species, populations of desert tortoises are in decline, in part due to a cold-adapted pathogen that causes chronic respiratory disease. Future studies, similarly focused on the function of B1 lymphocytes, could serve to uncover new patterns in thermal acclimation of immune functions and disease ecology across taxa of ectothermic vertebrates. Differential predation on species with intraspecific colour variation has been explored in various systems and is often implicated as the driving force behind colour polymorphism maintenance.Here, investigation done on whether predation contributes to the maintenance of extensive colour variation in the Neotropical tortoise beetle, Chelymorpha alternans (Chrysomelidae). Recorded predation rates on different colour pattern phenotypes by three common, generalist invertebrate predators, and identified potential chemical signals of unpalatability.Predaceious mantids (Orthoptera, Mantidae) consumed no beetles, regardless of phenotype, whereas the giant orb‐weaving spider (Trichonephila clavipes; Araneidae) consumed all three beetle phenotypes. The carton‐nest ant, Azteca chartifex (Formicidae), displayed differential predation; the rufipennis phenotype of C. alternans was sometimes consumed, the metallic phenotype was never consumed, and the veraguensis phenotype was consumed in the first three encounters and subsequently discarded, suggesting a learned avoidance behaviour.Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, it was determined that cuticular hydrocarbon profiles were similar between the metallic and militaris‐a phenotypes. The rufipennis phenotype showed pronounced differences and displayed the greatest among‐individual variation in elytral cuticular profiles.Between‐phenotype variation in chemical cues, and differences in how predators receive those cues, may mediate predator response, and play a role in maintaining colour variation in this species. Terrain adaptation and amphibious landing pose the greatest challenges for soft amphibious robots. Based on the principles of tortoises, this paper presents a fully 3D‐printed soft amphibious robot with four pneumatic bionic legs that are capable of bending in three dimensions. The gaits of the robot are described in six different ways and a dynamic model is developed for its control. In addition to linear motion (0.97 BL s−1) and turning (25.4° s−1) on rigid terrain, the robot can also maneuver on various surface conditions (such as hills, gaps, smooth slopes, gravel, sand, muddy terrain, and water), and even make an amphibious landing. These properties, together with the soft amphibious robot's continuous obstacle avoidance capabilities, high load‐carrying capacity (28 times its own weight), low cost, and high camouflage, allow for a wide variety of applications. Archaeological investigations carried out in the cave Zubbio di Cozzo San Pietro, Bagheria, Sicily, revealed the presence of a few skeletal elements of a large-sized tortoise in a funerary area dating to the Copper/Bronze Age. The tortoise has been AMS-dated revealing an age of 12.5 ± 0.5 kyr BP and therefore it pre-dates the funerary activities. The morphology of the retrieved skeletal elements differs from that of the only native tortoise currently living in Sicily, Testudo hermanni. The tortoise's size significantly exceeds the size range of extant Te. hermanni and all Testudo spp. as well as that of their known fossils, and suggests a shell length of 50–60 cm. Repeated efforts to obtain DNA sequences from the tortoise of Zubbio di Cozzo San Pietro failed, but the morphology of the femur is distinct enough to allow us to erect a new taxon, Solitudo sicula gen. et sp. nov. , based on a parsimony analysis. It belongs to a hitherto unrecognized clade that includes other large-sized tortoises from Mediterranean islands, like Malta and Menorca. Nigerian playwright Femi Euba utilizes the Yoruba trickster tale in his one-act play Tortoise! to satirize the imprisonment of Wole Soyinka during the Nigerian civil war of the 1960s. This essay draws parallels between Euba's play and Soyinka's play, The Detainee, which critiques the imprisonment of Chief Obafemi Awolowo by the Nigerian federal government a few years before Soyinka himself fell victim to the same alleged crime of treason. This essay argues that Euba's use of the trickster tale as a logical genre in theater is grounded in the communal space of Yoruba belief systems that encourage a collective response to social and political crises. The essay also traces modernity's fraught challenges in the guise of neo-colonial structures, such as the prison system, and the ways in which traditional modes of story-telling become avenues for apprehending, addressing, and contesting global forces at work through the legacies of colonialism. Claws are the most common attachment mechanism in vertebrates. The comparative anatomy and morphology of claws has been studied mainly in reptiles and birds. However, as far as we know, studies focusing on turtles' claws are lacking. Turtles occupy a wide range of habitats, from aquatic to terrestrial, and vary in form and behavior, being an ideal model organism for ecomorphological studies. We performed qualitative and quantitative analyses to find a relationship between morphological variation and both ecological factors and phylogenetic constraints that could have driven the evolution of turtles' claws. The claws of 35 adult turtle and tortoise specimens of 12 species of testudines with different locomotor modes were compared. Our data show several convergence traits in claw shape, with convergence being reinforced by the low phylogenetic signal exhibited by most characters. We propose that claw morphology in turtles is mainly associated with some mechanical functions, such as freshwater-swimming, bottom-walking and tearing of prey. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The late Quaternary is characterized by the extinction of many terrestrial megafauna, which included tortoises (Family: Testudinidae). However, limited information is available on how extinction shaped the phenotype of surviving taxa. Here, based on a global dataset of straight carapace length, we investigate the temporal variation, spatial distribution and evolution of tortoise body size over the past 23 million years, thereby capturing the effects of Quaternary extinctions in this clade. We found a significant change in body size distribution characterized by a reduction of both mean body size and maximum body size of extant tortoises relative to fossil taxa. This reduction of body size occurred earlier in mainland (Early Pleistocene 2.588–0.781 Ma) than in island tortoises (Late Pleistocene/Holocene 0.126–0 Ma). Despite contrasting body size patterns between fossil and extant taxa on a spatial scale, tortoise body size showed limited variation over time until this decline. Body size is a fundamental functional trait determining many aspects of species ecologies, with large tortoises playing key roles as ecosystem engineers. As such, the transition from larger sized to smaller sized classes indicated by our findings likely resulted in the homogenization of tortoises' ecological functions and diminished the role of tortoises in structuring the vegetation community. Sampling fecal droppings (scat) to genetically identify individual animals is an established method for monitoring mammal populations and could be highly useful for monitoring reptile populations. Whereas existing protocols for obtaining DNA from reptile scat focus on analyses of whole, fresh scat deposited during animal handling, the collection of scat naturally deposited by reptiles in situ, as required for non‐invasive population monitoring, requires protocols to extract highly degraded DNA. Using surface swabs from such scats can reduce PCR inhibition and increase genotyping success. We report on three related but independently designed studies of DNA analyses from scat swabs of herbivorous reptiles under natural desert conditions: two free‐ranging desert tortoise species (Agassiz's desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizii, California, US, and Morafka's desert tortoise, G. morafkai, Arizona, US) and the common chuckwalla (Sauromalus atar) (Arizona, US, and Sonora, MX). We analyzed samples from both tortoise species with the same set of 16 microsatellites and chuckwalla samples with four mtDNA markers; studies also varied in swab preservation medium and DNA extraction method. Microsatellite amplification success per sample, defined as ≥9 loci with amplification, was 15% for the study of Agassiz's desert tortoise and for the study of 42% Morafka's desert tortoise. For chuckwallas, we successfully amplified and sequenced 50% of samples. We recovered fragments up to 400 bp for tortoises and 980 bp for chuckwallas from scat swab samples. This study indicates that genotypes can successfully be obtained from swabs of scat from herbivorous reptiles collected in the field under natural environmental conditions and emphasizes that repeat amplifications are necessary for the genetic identification of individuals from non‐invasive samples. Introduction: Exotic pet lovers' interest in keeping tortoises is increasing all over the world, including Indonesia. However, this trend cannot be separated from the potential emergence of various health problems in tortoises. One of the problems that often affects tortoises is metabolic bone disease. Metabolic bone disease (MBD) is a disorder related to the mechanisms of vitamin D and calcium metabolism, which generally occurs in reptiles, especially Chelonia and Lizards. Case Presentation: A 3-month-old redfooted tortoise, which was clinically suspected to have a MBD, was necropsied as an effort to support the provisional diagnosis through histopathological evaluation. The purpose of this examination was to analyze the impact of the disease on various organs microscopically in patients with suspected MBD. The results showed a decrease in the number of trabeculae and hematopoietic cells in the metatarsal bones; moderate myonecrotic changes and atrophy in the skeletal muscle; inflammation of the perineuron; acute tubular necrosis and mild edema of the renal cortex; congestion and an increase in the number of melanomacrophages in the liver; as well as epicarditis and myocarditis in the heart. Conclusion: Several forms of the histopathological changes seem to indicate a pathophysiological relationship between the suspected metabolic bone disease and the multiple organs examined. Trachymela sloanei (Blackburn, 1897) is a non‐indigenous beetle of the Iberian Peninsula herbivorous of several species of Eucalyptus trees. Since its first detection in Europe in 2014, little information is available about the populations of this beetle in this distribution range. Therefore, a complete chorological update of the Australian tortoise beetle in the Iberian Peninsula is carried out. The ecology, phenology and potential distribution are discussed. Certain features of its morphology are fully illustrated to increase knowledge of this species. • The film properties given by functional fillers depend on shape memory effect. • The technique allows multiple function alterations enabling material recycling. • The films offer a promising pathway for sustainable material development. Inspired by tortoise beetle, a novel method for preparing sustainable films, leveraging the on-demand embedding or release behavior of the functional fillers to impart or eliminate functions to the film is reported. The microscopic shape-memory behavior of the film surface was characterized using microscopy techniques and finite-element analysis to investigate the embedding and release of single micro-/nanospheres on the film surface, which were affected by sphere diameters and programming temperatures. By utilizing different functional fillers and distribution densities, the transformation and tunability of film properties such as optical reflection and fluorescence was demonstrated. Different functions of the film were altered through multiple cycles, showcasing the ability to immobilize patterns, step-wise release, recycle materials and create temperature-sensitive anticounterfeiting codes and decoration on objects. This approach offers a promising avenue for developing sustainable films with tunable functions and highlights the potential for recycling functional fillers, contributing to both environmental sustainability and material reusability. Chersina angulata egg retention times differ among sequentially ovulated eggs from February to November, being shorter in eggs ovulated in October and November than in eggs ovulated in February, April, May, and July. More time is required to achieve eggshell calcification from July to October than from March to June. In most instances (71%) females lay their eggs when the eggshell still appears relatively thin on the radiographs, with only few eggs becoming more prominently calcified prior to oviposition. The Isle of Crete contains an important endemic fossil fauna that has been studied extensively in the past. An endemic fossil tortoise, Testudo marginata cretensis Bachmayer, Brinkerink & Symeonidis, 1975, had previously been named from Pleistocene cave deposits in the island, presumably being larger than the mainland species and having some important morphological differences as well. In this paper I revise these type specimens and describe for the first time numerous additional fossil specimens from the Pleistocene sites of Gerani IV, Zourida, Koumpes, Liko, Mavro Mouri IV, and Simonelli Caves (near Herakleion), Rethymnon fissure, and from the open site of Sitia in the eastern part of the Island. These specimens belong mostly to the marginated tortoise, but the presence of a terrapin is confirmed as well. These new fossils help to refute the validity of the Cretan subspecies, and change the range of the marginated tortoise during Pleistocene/Holocene times in the southern Balkans. We describe and identify fossil material of turtles recovered from several Pleistocene localities of Hidalgo and Puebla. A comparative study with selected specimens of extant and extinct turtles revealed that the fossil sample evidences two families (Kinosternidae and Testudinidae), three genera (Kinosternon, Gopherus, and aff. Hesperotestudo), and two species (K. flavescens and G. berlandieri). This record supplements their occurrence in the country, being common inhabitants of central Mexico. We performed a paleoclimatic reconstruction of the Valsequillo Basin using the Mutual Ecogeographic Range (MER) method, given that in this area the fossil material was identified to species level, including K. flavescens and G. berlandieri. The potential climatic conditions based on the distribution model and the current habitats of these turtles suggest that the climate was warmer with similar precipitation (21.99 °C mean annual temperature and 623 mm mean annual precipitation) in comparison to the current ones (17 °C mean annual temperature and 622.2 mm mean annual precipitation). By the same token, the presence of xerophytic thickets and desert areas suitable for G. berlandieri , associated with bodies of water inhabited by K. flavescens, is proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To understand the zonation of the gut microbiota of different terrapins,this study analyzed and compared the fecal microbial diversity of captive Indotestudo elongata,Centrochelys sulcata,Astrochelys radiata and Stigmochelys pardalis using high-throughput sequencing technology.The results showed that Firmicutes,Bacteroidetes,Synergistetes and Proteobacteria were the dominant phyla of all four species of terrapins,similar to other reported dominant phyla of reptiles.Although terrapins are hindgut fermenters,top 10 genera in relative abundance in four terrapin fecal samples(Prevotella,Ruminococcus,Clostridium,etc.)had extremely clear similarities to the rumen flora in ruminants.The Alpha diversity index showed numerical but not statistically significant differences among the four tortoise species,and the NMDS analysis showed that tortoise fecal microorganisms from similar environments differed less,and the LEfSe analysis showed that each tortoise had its own marker bacteria,so the underlying factor for the differences in gut flora was related to its own genetic traits.Acidaminococcus and Epulopiscium were not mentioned in reported reptile gut microbes,but were detected in all four species of terrapins,and the relative abundance in individual terrapin fecal samples was close to 20%. Thermal constraints imposed by the environment limit the activity time of ectotherms and have been a central issue in ecophysiology. Assessing these restrictions is key to determining the vulnerability of species to changing thermal niches and developing conservation strategies.We generate an explicit tortoise model of thermal constraints at both micro and macroclimate scales based on thermophysiology parameters and environmental operative temperatures during a biologically significant period. As a study model, we use a vulnerable species of gopher tortoise Gopherus evgoodei, whose primary habitat is the tropical dry forests in northwestern Mexico.Our mechanistic model is based on a monitoring of 5 years of environmental operative temperatures (Te). Here, we use the hours of activity (ha) and hours of thermal restriction (hr), calculated from the voluntary temperature range of G. evgoodei with respect to Te, to project and compare the thermal constraints across space and time. In addition, this model was projected using a pessimistic climate change scenario for 2070 (RCP 8.5).The results show that the period of activity of G. evgoodei, predicted by ha and hr, is limited by the frequency and availability of Te and differs significantly throughout the year and among years. In addition, under the RCP 8.5 scenario, we predict that hr will increase considerably and exceed the critical value (3.1 hr) placing this species as highly vulnerable.We discuss and compare the period of potential activity, thermoregulation strategies, and costs and benefits with other Gopherus species. Finally, we identify critical areas throughout its range to develop management strategies for protecting this Mexican endemic tortoise. Assigning individuals to their source populations is crucial for conservation research, especially for endangered species threatened by illegal trade and translocations. Genetic assignment can be achieved with different types of molecular markers, but technical advantages and cost saving are recently promoting the shift from short tandem repeats (STRs) to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Here, we designed, developed, and tested a small panel of SNPs for cost‐effective geographic assignment of individuals with unknown origin of the endangered Mediterranean tortoise Testudo hermanni. We started by performing a ddRAD‐seq experiment on 70 wild individuals of T. hermanni from 38 locations. Results obtained using 3182 SNPs are comparable to those previously obtained using STR markers in terms of genetic structure and power to identify the macro‐area of origin. However, our SNPs revealed further insights into the substructure in Western populations, especially in Southern Italy. A small panel of highly informative SNPs was then selected and tested by genotyping 190 individuals using the KASP genotyping chemistry. All the samples from wild populations of known geographic origin were genetically re‐assigned with high accuracy to the original population. This reduced SNPs panel represents an efficient molecular tool that enables individuals to be genotyped at low cost (less than €15 per sample) for geographical assignment and identification of hybrids. This information is crucial for the management in‐situ of confiscated animals and their possible re‐allocation in the wild. Our methodological pipeline can easily be extended to other species. The use of ecological replacements (analogue species to replace extinct taxa) to restore ecosystem functioning is a promising conservation tool. However, this approach is controversial, in part due to a paucity of data on interactions between analogue species and established taxa in the ecosystem.We conducted ecological surveys, comprehensively DNA barcoded an ecosystem's flora and inferred the diet of the introduced Aldabra giant tortoise, acting as an ecological replacement, to understand how it might have modified island plant communities on a Mauritian islet. Through further dietary analyses, we investigated consequential effects on the threatened endemic Telfair's skink.Dietary overlap between tortoises and skinks was greater than expected by chance. However, there was a negative correlation between tortoise and skink preferences in herbivory and minimal overlap in the plants most frequently consumed by the reptiles.Changes in the plant community associated with 7 years of tortoise grazing were characterised by a decrease in the percentage cover of native herbs and creepers, and an increase in the cover of an invasive herb when compared to areas without tortoises. However, tortoise dietary preferences themselves did not directly drive changes in the plant community.Tortoises successfully dispersed the seeds of an endemic palm, which in time may increase the extent of unique palm‐rich habitat. We found no evidence that tortoises have increased the extent of plant species hypothesised to be part of a lost Mauritian tortoise grazed community.Synthesis and applications. Due to a negative correlation in tortoise and skink dietary preferences and minimal overlap in the most frequently consumed taxa, the presence of tortoises is unlikely to have detrimental impacts on Telfair's skinks. Tortoise presence is likely to be beneficial to skinks in the long term by increasing the extent of palm‐rich habitat. Although tortoises are likely to play a role in controlling invasive plants, they are not a panacea for this challenge. After 7 years, tortoises have not resurrected a lost tortoise grazed community that we hypothesise might have existed in limited areas on the islet, indicating that further interventions may be required to restore this plant community. Simple Summary: Herpesviruses are important pathogens in tortoises and cause latent infections. Serological testing is therefore an important tool for the detection of herpesvirus-infected tortoises. This retrospective study describes the detection of antibodies against two herpesviruses in pet tortoises in Europe. Of the 1728 samples tested, antibodies against one or both of the viruses used were detected in 122 (7.06%) of the tortoises. Detection rates differed depending on virus type, host species, and year of sampling. For individual viruses, detection rates also differed depending on season and country of origin. A better understanding of both the herpesviruses' prevalences and the immune response to infection will help protect these animals in future. Herpesviruses are important pathogens of tortoises, and several serologically and genetically distinct virus types have been described in these animals. Virus neutralization testing is commonly used in Europe to determine previous infection with the two types most often found in pet European tortoises, testudinid herpesvirus (TeHV) 1 and 3. In this retrospective study, the results of serological testing for antibodies against each of these viruses in serum or plasma samples from 1728 tortoises were evaluated, and antibody detection rates were compared based on virus type, host species, year, season, and country of origin. Antibodies (titer 2 or higher) against at least one of the two viruses used were detected in a total of 122 (7.06%; 95% CI 5.95–8.37%) of the animals tested. The antibody detection rates differed significantly depending on the tortoise species (p < 0.0001) and the year of sampling (TeHV1 p = 0.0402; TeHV3 p = 0.0482) for both virus types. For TeHV1, antibody detection rates differed significantly (p = 0.0384) by season. The highest detection rate was in summer (5.59%; 95% CI 4.10–7.58%), and the lowest was in fall (1.25%; CI 0.53–2.87%). TeHV1 antibody detection rates did not differ significantly (p = 0.7805) by country, whereas TeHV3 antibody detection rates did (p = 0.0090). The highest detection rate, 12.94% (95% CI 7.38–21.70%), was found in samples from Italy. These results support previous hypotheses on the species' susceptibility to TeHV1 and 3 and the use of serology as a diagnostic test for the detection of herpesvirus-infected tortoises. In recent years, many nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species have been recognized as pathogens for humans and animals. Molecular diagnostic techniques enable rapid identification and characterization of the different species of mycobacteria. NTM are inhabitants of the soil and water, and enter the body through a defect in the skin or mucosa, causing infections in immunocompromised subjects. Mycobacteriosis has been described in reptiles, especially in chelonians, but the incidence seems to be low in captivity. To date, mycobacteriosis has been described only in three tortoise species. This report involves a captive Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni) diagnosed with cloacal mycobacteriosis and subsequent systemic dissemination by histopathology and PCR. A Mycobacterium sp. belonging to the M. terrae complex was identified as the etiologic agent, and this is the first report of infection in reptiles by this organism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We assessed the potential for microbial interactions influencing a well-documented host–pathogen system. Mycoplasma agassizii is the known etiological agent of upper respiratory tract disease in Mojave desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii), but disease in wild animals is extremely heterogeneous. For example, a much larger proportion of animals harbor M. agassizii than those that develop disease. With the availability of a new quantitative PCR assay for a microbe that had previously been implicated in disease, Pasteurella testudinis, we tested 389 previously collected samples of nasal microbes from tortoise populations across the Mojave desert. We showed that P. testudinis is a common commensal microbe. However, we did find that its presence was associated with higher levels of M. agassizii among the tortoises positive for this pathogen. The best predictor of P. testudinis prevalence in tortoise populations was average size of tortoises, suggesting that older populations have higher levels of P. testudinis. The prevalence of co-infection in populations was associated with the prevalence of URTD, providing additional evidence for an indirect interaction between the two microbes and inflammatory disease. Animals may select habitat to maximize the benefits of foraging on growth and reproduction, while balancing competing factors like the risk of predation or mortality from other sources. Variation in the distribution of food resources may lead animals to forage at times or in places that carry greater predation risk, with individuals in poor quality habitats expected to take greater risks while foraging. We studied Mojave desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii) in habitats with variable forage availability to determine if risk aversion in their selection of habitat relative was related to abundance of forage. As a measure of risk, we examined tortoise surface activity and mortality. We also compared tortoise body size and body condition between habitats with ample forage plants and those with less forage plants. Tortoises from low forage habitats selected areas where more annual plants were nutritious herbaceous flowering plants but did not favor areas of greater perennial shrub cover that could shelter them or their burrows. In contrast, tortoises occupying high forage habitats showed no preference for forage characteristics, but used burrows associated with more abundant and larger perennial shrubs. Tortoises in high forage habitats were larger and active above ground more often but did not have better body condition. Mortality was four times higher for females occupying low forage habitat than those in high forage habitat. Our results are consistent with the idea that tortoises may minimize mortality risk where food resources are high, but may accept some tradeoff of greater mortality risk in order to forage optimally when food resources are limiting. This is the first report of the presence of the pine tortoise scale Toumeyella parvicornis Cockerell (Hemiptera: Coccidae) in the Italian region of Puglia (South‐Eastern Italy). The pine tortoise scale was observed in July 2021 on Pinus pinea in the city of Bari. Pinus halepensis trees growing near infested P. pinea were not found to be infested. None of the monitored plants in the other surveyed municipalities within the region had apparent signs of T. parvicornis infestation. Overall, the rapid expansion of T. parvicornis in the Italian Peninsula represents a serious threat to the Pinus species of the entire Mediterranean basin, thus the development of sustainable integrated management strategies is urgently needed. The Palaeogene sedimentary successions of the Duero Basin host an important record of fossil vertebrates, especially mammals and reptiles. The main fossil sites are placed at the west margin (Salamanca and Zamora areas) spanning from the Lutetian to the late Priabonian; and at the southeast tip (Almazán Basin) mainly Bartonian in age. The continued study of the sites is supplying new data that will improve the chronostratigraphy and the correlation between the western and eastern regions of the basin. The diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the represented fauna have been revised in recent years with the reassignment of some remains and the diagnosis of some new taxa. Four lineages of turtles are represented: Podocnemididae (Neochelys), Carettochelyidae (Allaeochelys), Trionychidae and Testudinidae (Pelorochelon). Crocodyliform paleobiodiversity is composed of notosuchians (close to Iberosuchus) and, at least, three crocodylian lineages: Planocraniidae (Duerosuchus), Alligatoroidea (Diplocynodon) and Crocodyloidea ('Asiatosuchus'). The distribution of these taxa is not homogeneous throughout the basin, and a deep transformation is recognised throughout the middle Eocene. The fitting of the distribution and relationships of the reptilian fauna from the Duero Basin provides valuable information to understand some faunistic dynamics such as the endemism process of northwestern Iberia from the middle of the Eocene. Turtles as many other reptiles are capable of orientating their bodies toward the sun. This conduct requires the presence of an internal biological chronometer in the organism that regulates this behavior. Thus, a description of the internal clock in these reptiles is of interest. The assessment of locomotor activity can be considered a reliable indicator of biological clock function. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different artificial photoperiod and ambient temperature schedules on total locomotor activity of female Chelonoidis chilensis and its rhythmicity. Six C. chilensis specimens were exposed to different artificial photoperiods and temperature regimes each fixed for seven days. It was observed that the activity period during the different experimental schedules was close to the 24 hours indicating a daily rhythmicity. Moreover, all tortoises showed a similar total locomotor activity pattern displaying the most of motion during light phase. Under the condition of constant light tortoises exhibited a self-sustaining rhythm not entrained to light and temperature zeitgebers, thus, suggesting its possible endogenous periodicity. Though this study deepens the knowledge on the rhythmic system of C. chilensis , further investigations are needed to achieve a more detailed understanding of tortoise biological clock. Simple Summary: Understanding the energy that animals use to move around is important, as it can shed light on how they make decisions about where and how to locomote. Tortoises are unique among vertebrates in having a shell, which influences almost all aspects of their biology. Here, we experimentally quantified the metabolic cost of transport in Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoises walking on a treadmill while also quantifying the kinematics of their movement. We found, in line with previous studies, that tortoises move more efficiently than predicted and present the first data demonstrating a curvilinear cost of transport over their speed range. We conclude that tortoises have an optimum speed at which they move to minimise their metabolic cost of locomotion. Tortoises are famed for their slow locomotion, which is in part related to their herbivorous diet and the constraints imposed by their protective shells. For most animals, the metabolic cost of transport (CoT) is close to the value predicted for their body mass. Testudines appear to be an exception to this rule, as previous studies indicate that, for their body mass, they are economical walkers. The metabolic efficiency of their terrestrial locomotion is explainable by their walking gait biomechanics and the specialisation of their limb muscle physiology, which embodies a predominance of energy-efficient slow-twitch type I muscle fibres. However, there are only two published experimental reports of the energetics of locomotion in tortoises, and these data show high variability. Here, Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoises (Testudo graeca) were trained to walk on a treadmill. Open-flow respirometry and high-speed filming were simultaneously used to measure the metabolic cost of transport and to quantify limb kinematics, respectively. Our data support the low cost of transport previously reported and demonstrate a novel curvilinear relationship to speed in Testudines, suggesting tortoises have an energetically optimal speed range over which they can move in order to minimise the metabolic cost of transport. Emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) have been reported as causes of morbidity and mortality in free‐living animal populations, including turtles and tortoises, and they have even resulted in species extinctions, with human activities contributing to the spread of many of these diseases. In the Galapagos, giant tortoises are endangered due to habitat change, invasive species, and other human impacts; however, the impact of EIDs on Galapagos tortoise conservation remains understudied. To fill this gap, we conducted health assessments of five tortoise species from the islands of Santa Cruz, Isabela and Española. We performed health evaluations of 454 animals and PCR testing for pathogens known to be relevant in other tortoise species. We identified two novel sequences of adenoviruses and four of herpesviruses. Based on alignments of the DNA polymerase gene and maximum likelihood phylogenetic analyses, we found both novel adenoviruses to be most closely related to red footed tortoise adenovirus 2, by nucleotide sequence and red footed tortoise adenovirus 1, based on amino acid sequence. Three of the herpesvirus sequences translated into the same deduced amino acid sequence; therefore, they may be considered the same viral species, closely related to terrapene herpesvirus 2. The fourth herpesvirus sequence was highly divergent from any sequence previously detected and is related to an eagle owl herpesvirus based on nucleotide sequence and to loggerhead oro‐cutaneous herpesvirus based on amino acids. These novel viruses may be pathogenic for giant tortoises under specific conditions (e.g., stress). Continued screening is crucial to determine if these viruses play a role in tortoise fitness, morbidity and survival. This information allows us to provide recommendations to the Galapagos National Park Directorate and other institutions to improve the management of these unique species both in Galapagos and globally, and for tortoise reintroduction plans throughout the archipelago. Ticks carry a diverse community of microorganisms including non‐pathogenic symbionts, commensals, and pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria, protozoans, and fungi. The assessment of tick‐borne microorganisms (TBM) in tortoises and their ticks is essential to understand their eco‐epidemiology, and to map and monitor potential pathogens to humans and other animals. The aim of this study was to characterize the diversity of microorganisms found in ticks collected from the spur‐thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca) in North Africa and Anatolia. Ticks feeding on wild T. graeca were collected, and pathogens were screened by polymerase chain reaction using group‐specific primers. In total, 131 adult Hyalomma aegyptium ticks were collected from 92 T. graeca in Morocco (n = 48), Tunisia (n = 2), Algeria (n = 70), and Turkey (n = 11). Bacteria and protozoa detected included Hemolivia mauritanica (22.9%), Midichloria mitochondrii (11.4%), relapsing‐fever borreliae (8.4%), Ehrlichia spp. (7.6%), Rickettsia spp. (3.4%), Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. (0.9%), Francisella spp. (0.9%), and Wolbachia spp. (0.8%). The characterization of Rickettsia included R. sibirica mongolitimonae (Algeria), R. aeschlimannii (Turkey), and R.africae (Morocco). Hemolivia mauritanica and Ehrlichia spp. prevalence varied significantly with the sampling region/country. We did not detect significant associations in microorganism presence within ticks, nor between microorganism presence and tick mitochondrial DNA haplogroups. This is the first report of Francisella persica‐like, relapsing fever borreliae, M. mitochondrii, and Wolbachia spp. in H. aegyptium ticks collected from wild hosts from the South and Eastern Mediterranean region, and of R. sibirica mongolitimonae and R. africae in H. aegyptium from Algeria and Morocco, respectively. Given that T. graeca is a common species in commercial and non‐commercial pet trade, the evaluation of the role of this species and its ticks as hosts for TBM is particularly relevant for public health. Home range analysis is a standard and fundamental concept in ecology used to describe animal space use over their lifetimes. Connecting home range sizes with animal characteristics, location, and habitat can be used to inform conservation decisions. Reptiles are frequently lacking robust estimates of space use, particularly reptiles in tropical regions. Here we analyse a publicly available dataset, collected by the authors of this study, describing the movements of Critically Endangered Elongated tortoises Indotestudo elongata. The tortoise data included the locations of 17 tortoises (12 females, 5 males) collected on average once every three days for an average duration of 353.76 SE ± 33.10 days. We use these data to estimate the home range of Elongated tortoise, and explore how tortoise size and sex influences home range size. To mitigate issues resulting from low effective sample sizes and low temporal resolution of the data, we used a modern home range estimation method - Autocorrelated Kernel Density Estimators (AKDE). We found 14 of 17 individuals appear to be occupying a stable home range (using variograms to determine range residency). The average AKDE home range for all 14 individuals with range residency was 44.81 ± 10.44 ha. Bayesian Regression Models suggest comparable size estimates between male and female home ranges, despite males being physically larger than females in both mass and carapace length. These AKDE home range estimates have the added utility of being more comparable with other studies, less susceptible to errors from a suboptimal tracking regime, and are well positioned for inclusion in future meta-analyses. Captive chelonians should be fed a natural diet to achieve a growth rate similar to that of free-ranging animals. A wide range of commercially formulated foods dedicated to chelonians is available. Feeding commercial foods has the advantage of convenience. On the other hand, species-specific information on the nutritional requirements of chelonians is not available yet. The aim of this study was to analyse and evaluate commercial pellets and feeds for chelonians. Commercial pellets (ntortoise = 7, nturtle = 7, from 6 companies) dedicated to carnivorous aquatic turtles and herbivorous terrestrial tortoises, and other aquatic turtle feeds (lyophilised beef heart, dried aquatic invertebrates, and whole frozen fish) were bought in pet shops. Whole frozen fish served as a reference feed for carnivorous aquatic turtles. The chemical composition as well as calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) contents were determined. Single-sample t-test was used with the label information as null hypothesis and the results of own parallel analyses for crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude fibre (CF), Ca and P. The labelling of some of the pellets was deficient as nutritive values, Ca or P data were missing (tortoise pellets: 4 out of 7; turtle pellets: 5 out of 7). The label data differed significantly (p<0.05) from the results of our own analysis for 13 out of the 14 pellets. None of the tortoise pellets met the requirements of the animals completely. Because of the inadequate Ca:P ratio only one turtle pellet could be accepted. Accordingly, none of the commercial pellets can be recommended as main or only feed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the last few decades, there has been a global increase in the adoption of reptiles as companion animals, mainly turtles and tortoises. Considering the popularity of reptiles as pets in Brazil, and a notable lack of data about potentially pathogenic staphylococci in these animals, this study isolated and evaluate the antimicrobial susceptibility of staphylococcal species from healthy tortoises (Chelonoidis carbonaria) in Brazil. During a 12-month period (February 2019 to February 2020), cloacal swabs from 66 healthy tortoises were collected at the Wild Animals Screening Center in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The swabs were plated onto mannitol salt agar for staphylococci isolation, and species identification was performed using MALDI-TOF MS. Antimicrobial susceptibility was investigated using the disk diffusion method, and the presence of the mecA gene was investigated by PCR to detect methicillin resistance. Of the tested animals, 72.7% were positive for staphylococcal isolation. All isolates were coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS), and Staphylococcus sciuri (81.3%), and S. xylosus (12.5%) were the most frequently isolated species. The majority of the isolates (56%) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent. A high frequency of resistance was observed for penicillin (35.5%) and tetracycline (29.1 %). All strains were susceptible to cefoxitin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, and gentamicin. All isolates were negative for the mecA gene. The present work suggests that healthy tortoises are mainly colonized by CoNS, especially S. sciuri. Half of the isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, raising questions regarding the possible role of these animals as reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance genes. Herpesviruses are found in free-living and captive chelonian populations, often in association with morbidity and mortality. To date, all known chelonian herpesviruses fall within the subfamily Alphaherpesvirinae. We detected a novel herpesvirus in 3 species of chelonians: a captive leopard tortoise (Stigmochelys pardalis) in western TX, USA; a steppe tortoise (Testudo [ Agrionemys ] horsfieldii) found near Fort Irwin, CA, USA; and 2 free-living, three-toed box turtles (Terrapene mexicana triunguis) found in Forest Park, St. Louis, MO. The leopard tortoise was coinfected with the tortoise intranuclear coccidian and had clinical signs of upper respiratory tract disease. The steppe tortoise had mucopurulent nasal discharge and lethargy. One of the three-toed box turtles had no clinical signs; the other was found dead with signs of trauma after being observed with blepharedema, tympanic membrane swelling, cervical edema, and other clinical signs several weeks prior to death. Generally, the branching order of the turtle herpesviruses mirrors the divergence patterns of their hosts, consistent with codivergence. Based on phylogenetic analysis, this novel herpesvirus clusters with a clade of viruses that infect emydid hosts and is likely of box turtle origin. Therefore, we suggest the name terrapene alphaherpesvirus 3 (TerAHV3) for the novel virus. This virus also has the ability to host-jump to tortoises, and previously documented herpesviral morbidity tends to be more common in aberrant hosts. Background. Tortoises of the genus Testudo are widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean region and southwestern Asia. However, the evolutionary mechanisms of diversification in this genus are still poorly understood. Methods. In this study, we assessed the evolutionary patterns in the climate niches of five species and 11 subspecies of the genus Testudo using ecological niche models and evaluated the niche overlap based on species phylogenetic distances. Results. The ecological models indicated that most species differ in their climate niches, but show overlap, with gradual transitions at range boundaries. As expected, the ecological divergence among subspecies was lower than that among species. A central challenge in current cluster policy discussions is how to build innovative clusters that are resilient to external shocks. We examine the Montréal aerospace industry to explore cluster resilience. The case is interesting since it recently experienced two industrial shocks: Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019 and Bombardier's sell-off of its flagship CSeries in 2020. Surprisingly, in the wake of the two radical disruptions, the cluster fared quite well in terms of employment and export performance. Using the method of abductive reasoning to find a-matter-of-course explanation of the surprising case, we observe that a low speed of aircraft development and production – a low industry clockspeed – stabilizes local production and knowledge networks through five mechanisms: long-term contracting, R&D cost sharing, production planning, social networking, and technology solidifying. Inspired from the case, we theoretically explore how fast (e. g., fashion and cellphones or the hare) and low (e. g., shipbuilding and aerospace or the tortoise) industry clockspeeds lead to different configurations of firm relations and are thus associated with different types of economic resilience. Is senescence inevitable and universal for all living organisms, as evolutionary theories predict? Although evidence generally supports this hypothesis, it has been proposed that certain species, such as turtles and tortoises, may exhibit slow or even negligible senescenceÑi.e., avoiding the increasing risk of death from gradual deterioration with age. In an extensive comparative study of turtles and tortoises living in zoos and aquariums, we show that ~75% of 52 species exhibit slow or negligible senescence. For ~80% of species, aging rates are lower than those in modern humans. We find that body weight positively relates to adult life expectancy in both sexes, and sexual size dimorphism explains sex differences in longevity. Oceanic islands support unique biotas but often lack ecological redundancy, so that the removal of a species can have a large effect on the ecosystem. The larger islands of the Galápagos Archipelago once had one or two species of giant tortoise that were the dominant herbivore. Using paleoecological techniques, we investigate the ecological cascade on highland ecosystems that resulted from whalers removing many thousands of tortoises from the lowlands. We hypothesize that the seasonal migration of a now-extinct tortoise species to the highlands was curtailed by decreased intraspecific competition. We find the trajectory of plant community dynamics changed within a decade of the first whaling vessels visiting the islands. Novel communities established, with a previously uncommon shrub, Miconia, replacing other shrubs of the genera Alternanthera and Acalypha. It was, however, the introduction of cattle and horses that caused the local extirpation of plant species, with the most extreme impacts being evident after c. 1930. This modified ecology is considered the natural state of the islands and has shaped subsequent conservation policy and practice. Restoration of El Junco Crater should emphasize exclusion of livestock, rewilding with tortoises, and expanding the ongoing plantings of Miconia to also include Acalypha and Alternanthera. The status of the Fernandina Island Galapagos giant tortoise (Chelonoidis phantasticus) has been a mystery, with the species known from a single specimen collected in 1906. The discovery in 2019 of a female tortoise living on the island provided the opportunity to determine if the species lives on. By sequencing the genomes of both individuals and comparing them to all living species of Galapagos giant tortoises, here we show that the two known Fernandina tortoises are from the same lineage and distinct from all others. The whole genome phylogeny groups the Fernandina individuals within a monophyletic group containing all species with a saddleback carapace morphology and one semi-saddleback species. This grouping of the saddleback species is contrary to mitochondrial DNA phylogenies, which place the saddleback species across several clades. These results imply the continued existence of lineage long considered extinct, with a current known population size of a single individual. Based on genomic data, the Galapagos giant tortoise species native to Fernandina Island appears to be alive and well, survived by at least one female after being considered extinct since 1906. In the southern half of peninsular Florida, where longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) sandhill communities are scarce, gopher tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) primarily occupy mesic flatwoods and Florida scrub habitats that appear suboptimal due to poorly drained soils in flatwoods and low forage abundance in scrub. Tortoise populations persist in these habitats, but their demography is poorly understood. We used burrow size-class distributions to assess population age structure in flatwoods and scrub habitats. In addition, we monitored tortoise nests and burrows with automated cameras to assess nest fate and visitation by predators. Burrows in flatwoods were strongly skewed toward adult size classes, suggesting low juvenile recruitment, which may be due to poor nest success caused by surface flooding or saturated soils. Size class distributions in scrub were also skewed but were closer to the expected range for a long-lived species with slowed growth following maturity. Rates of predator visitation did not differ between habitats but nests in flatwoods were inundated by heavy rains. More research is needed to clarify the demographics of gopher tortoises in the southernmost extent of their range. However, we suspect that some negative demographic consequences of suboptimal conditions may be offset by the warm climate in southern Florida, which may lengthen the growing season, promoting faster growth and earlier age at first reproduction that could boost population growth. Movement data and estimation of home-range sizes provide insight into the types and amount of habitat needed to support wildlife populations, which is critical for conservation planning. Gopher Tortoises, which are important ecosystem engineers and keystone species across the southeastern United States, are experiencing ongoing population declines and warrant additional habitat protection and management throughout their range. Conservation assessments for Gopher Tortoises are currently limited by scant knowledge of the ecology of younger age classes. We implemented a short-term study of immature Gopher Tortoise spatial ecology at Archbold Biological Station (ABS), Florida to determine home-range size, movements, and activity levels of 3–7-yr-old tortoises. We used GPS technology to obtain high-resolution temporal tracking data (approximately 10-fold increase compared with the radio tracking frequency in prior studies). Despite the relatively short duration of our study (≤40 d), immature Gopher Tortoises (n = 6) at ABS had home-range sizes ranging from 0.38 to 1.46 ha, which are approximately 6.6-fold larger than previously reported annual home-range estimates. Tortoises also left their burrows more often (4.0 ± 3.2 SD times per day) and for longer duration (31.5 ± 10.6 SD min per emergence) than in studies conducted elsewhere (1.6 times and 18.8 min, respectively). Our results illustrate the importance of employing new technologies to track previously difficult-to-observe life stages and improve conservation efforts for imperiled species. Subsidization of predator populations increases predation pressure on prey species, which is exacerbated when natural resources are scarce. Estimating the frequency of predation by subsidized predators on vulnerable species, especially low‐density, long‐lived species such as the federally threatened Mojave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii), allows landscape managers to evaluate the need for actions like reducing subsidies, discouraging predation by taste aversion, or predator removal. Most studies of Mojave desert tortoise predation have relied on morphological analysis to identify hard parts in predator scat. Here, we developed and validated a qPCR assay to test for the presence of Mojave desert tortoise in DNA extracted from scat and pellets. We used the assay to detect tortoise DNA in scat and pellets collected in a conservation easement adjacent to Boulder City, Nevada, from three Mojave desert tortoise predators: coyotes (Canis latrans), desert kit foxes (Vulpes macrotis arsipus), and common ravens (Corvus corax)—all of which consume anthropogenic resources. We compared the results of our qPCR assay to results from morphological analysis of the same samples and found that the qPCR method is much more sensitive at detecting the presence of tortoise remains. Although neither method can determine whether consumption was the result of predation or scavenging, nor how many individual tortoises were consumed, our findings indicate that conservation managers may benefit from focusing efforts on reducing subsidies that attract and support predators and on reducing tortoise mortality from predation. Leptospirosis is a worldwide zoonosis, characterized by a complex ecological cycle, including the environment, wild and domestic animals, and humans. It is also considered a water-borne infection. Although a solid body of data is available for more conventional hosts, limited information is available on neglected species such as reptiles, especially Testudinidae, both captive and free-ranging. Molecular and serological tests were performed to detect Leptospira spp. in Testudo spp. in Italy. Leptospiral DNA was detected using cloacal swabs collected from 116 individuals (54 free-ranging and 62 captive tortoises) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Unfortunately, because of the presence of PCR inhibitors, swabs from only 50 animals were eligible for analysis. A serological microagglutination test was performed on 121 Testudo spp. (7 free-ranging and 114 rescued tortoises). Sixteen individuals were tested using both assays, and the remainder were tested with one or the other. Ten out of 50 (20%) amplifiable cloacal swabs were positive for Leptospira DNA, the identity of which was confirmed by sequencing two amplicons. Two out of four repeatedly sampled animals only tested positive in the autumn. Seroprevalence was relatively low (0.8%, 1/121), at low titer (1:100). No positivity was recorded among free-ranging animals. Although these results do not provide a complete epidemiological snapshot of leptospirosis in chelonians, they suggest that tortoises are susceptible to pathogenic Leptospira. Further data are needed to determine the role of the captive environment as a possible predisposing factor and to assess the role of these reptiles in the ecology of leptospirosis. The Western subspecies of Hermann's tortoise (Testudo hermanni hermanni: WT) is threatened by habitat loss, fragmentation, wildfires, illegal harvesting, and likely hybridization with Testudo hermanni boettgeri (ET), a subspecies introduced from Eastern Europe. To assess the prevalence of this hybridization, we used microsatellite markers and simulations to investigate the genetic status of 565 individuals of the Var district (France) in contrast to the genetic signature of 121 individuals sampled in the Balkans. The genetic differentiation between WT and ET indicated 18% of tortoises in the Var were hybrids between WT and ET (i.e. F1, F2, and F3). Although hybridization increases the genetic diversity within the genetically impoverished WT population, hybridization could also threaten WT genetic integrity. Identifying and removing all hybridized individuals (especially beyond F1) is logistically unfeasible. Instead, conservation actions should reinforce communication and education, notably towards pet owners, to limit further hybridization. Moreover, accurate genetic identification of captives is essential to programs that involve translocating individuals to fragile populations (e.g. those severely impacted by bush fires). Further studies should assess the extent that WT/ET hybridization is detrimental or beneficial to populations facing rapid global changes in the context of depressed genetic diversity.
