Abstract

For the purposes of weather nowcasting, flood risk monitoring and water resources assessment, it is often difficult to achieve a reliable spatio-temporal representation of rainfall due to a low rain gauge network density. However, quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) has acquired new prospects with the introduction of weather radars, thanks to their higher spatio-temporal resolution. Although a wide number of QPE algorithms are available for using C-band radar data, only a few studies have employed X-band radar. In this study the microscale rainfall variability in a small catchment is automatically measured using short-range X-band radar variograms and classifying precipitation into convective and stratiform types with a recently published index. The aim is to apply a straightforward geostatistical algorithm, named ordinary kriging of radar errors (OKRE), to integrate X-band radar and rain gauge measurements in a mountainous catchment (15 km2) in central Spain. As expected, convective events presented higher estimation errors due to their complex spatial and temporal variability. Despite this fact, errors are sufficiently small and results are reliable rainfall estimations. The two main contributions of this work are the adaptation of the OKRE method to small spatial scales and its application automatically differentiating between convective and stratiform events.

Abstract

Póster presentado en NWCSAF 2015 Users Workshop. 24-26 de febrero de 2015, Madrid The first, preliminary, data from the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Satellite illustrate the potential of this spacecraft for science and societal applications. Here we show a glimpse on the first overpasses over Spain. The DPR measurements and the GMI estimates area qualitatively compared with Ground Radar (GR) measurements from the National Radar Network of Spain (PPI); with EUMESAT NWCSAF Convective Rainfall Rate from Cloud Physical Properties (CRPh, based on VIS and IR: day-only product); and with Meteosat imagery (HRV and 10.8 mm IR channels from MSG). Notwithstanding the provisional character of the data and all the applicable caveats and isclaimers, both the GPM radar and the radiometer provide precipitation estimates that are remarkably close to ground radar observations. This is specially noticeable for the GMI, as the estimates used here come from the original, day-1 database. Also CRPh product shows a good behavior in all cases. The adequacy of using GPM data to calibrate/validate the NWCSAF CRPh product is being studied.

Abstract

ESMs (Earth system models) are important tools that help scientists understand the complexities of the Earth's climate. Advances in computing power have permitted the development of increasingly complex ESMs and the introduction of better, more accurate parameterizations of processes that are too complex to be described in detail. One of the least well-controlled parameterizations involves human activities and their direct impact at local and regional scales. In order to improve the direct representation of human activities and climate, we have developed a simple, scalable approach that we have named the POPEM module (POpulation Parameterization for Earth Models). This module computes monthly fossil fuel emissions at grid-point scale using the modeled population projections. This paper shows how integrating POPEM parameterization into the CESM (Community Earth System Model) enhances the realism of global climate modeling, improving this beyond simpler approaches. The results show that it is indeed advantageous to model CO2 emissions and pollutants directly at model grid points rather than using the same mean value globally. A major bonus of this approach is the increased capacity to understand the potential effects of localized pollutant emissions on long-term global climate statistics, thus assisting adaptation and mitigation policies. The “Proyecto Madoz” uses Web 2.0 philosophy to develop a community project to render the Dictionary in a format more suitable for scientific research. The final product will be georeferenced so quantitative methods could be applied to this valuable source of information for mid-XIX century Spain., Este artículo presenta un proyecto, el “Proyecto Madoz”, cuyo objetivo es reconstruir el diccionario de Madoz. Para ello, se utilizará la filosofía de la Web 2.0, desarrollando una comunidad que transforme el Diccionario en un formato más adecuado para la investigación científica. El producto final estará georreferenciado, de manera que se puedan aplicar métodos cuantitativos a esta valiosa fuente de información de la España de mediados del diecinueve.

Abstract

This report deals with the potential economic impacts of innovations such as smart ticketing and instantaneous access to rail and modal connection information schedules. First, the qualitative role of TOIs (technological and organizational innovations) is explored within the framework of intermodality. Secondly, a simple, quantitative, parametric model is described. The model is then used to analyze the impact of TOIs on rail demand, accessibility and passenger welfare under the assumption of bounded rationality. Providing that the model captures the major processes in play, the results will show the potential effects of policy choices and technological innovations both on their own and in a combined form, thus enabling discussion of their relative merits and synergies. An analysis of quantitative results shows that the effect is positive, highly non-linear, and prone to cumulative effects due to far-reaching impacts related, for instance, to the economics of climate change.

Abstract

Luntley (2003) offers a new interpretation of Wittgenstein's philosophy, one aimed at displaying a coherent vision of the author from his Tractatus to the Philosophical Interpretations. This represents a novelty on the classical, twofold approach. Luntley's interpretation has some implications in social sciences and geography, and can elucidate the role of quantitative geography in its epistemological context. The aim of this paper is to show how behind Wittgenstein's method of dissolution-more-than-solution of philosophical problems, a series of geographical elements appear. These elements can thus be used to clarify the role of quantitative geography in geography, showing at the same time the place of geography in a general sense., La reciente relectura de Wittgenstein de Michael Luntley (2003) ofrece una visión coherente del autor vienés, en la que se rastrea la negación de la teoría animatoria del sentido tanto en el primer Wittgenstein del Tractatus como en el de las Investigaciones Filosóficas, lo que supone una novedad respecto a la visión tradicional de los dos Wittgenstein. Esta nueva interpretación tiene implicaciones para las ciencias sociales y en la geografía en particular, algunos de los cuales pueden ser invocados para situar a la geografía cuantitativa en su contexto epistemológico. El objeto de este artículo es mostrar como, detrás de las ideas de Wittgenstein y de su método de disolución (más que de solución) de los problemas filosóficos, residen una serie de elementos de interés geográfico que pueden servir para esclarecer el lugar de la geografía cuantitativa en la geografía, elucidando al mismo tiempo algunos aspectos de la tarea y ámbito de la geografía en general.

Abstract

This paper presents work that creates a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) database of European census data from 1870 to 2000. The database is integrated over space and time. Spatially it consists of regional-level data for most of Europe, temporally it covers every decade from 1870 to 2000. Crucially the data have been interpolated onto the administrative units available in 2000 thus allowing contemporary population patterns to be understood in the light of the changes that have occurred since the late-nineteenth century. The impact of interpolation error on the resulting estimates is explored. This database will provide a framework for much future analysis on long-term Europe-wide demographic processes over space and time.
