189. Preparation and Quantum Size Effects of Alternate Multi-Layer of Polypyrrole and Poly-3-cyclohexylthiophene Using Rapid Flow Electropolymerization.

Abstract

Alternately laminated films were formed from polypyrrole (PPy) layers and poly-3-cyclohexylthiophene (P3 CHT) layers by means of electrochemical oxidation polymerization using a flow electrochemical cell. A P 3 CHT polymerization film that was obtained in an oxidatively doped form, was completely dedoped by chemical reduction with hot methanol, and showed photoluminescence. Even by electrochemical reduction, the P 3 CHT film was dedoped into an emission active state. A photoluminescence peak of the dedoped PPy/P 3 CHT multi-layer appeared at a higher energy position than that of a P 3 CHT single layer. Furthermore, the peaks shifted to higher energy positions as a result of the decrease in the thickness of P 3 CHT layers as quantum well layers. By the calculation of the Kronig-Penny model, it could be explained that the photoluminescence peak shift originated in the quantum size effect in the superlattice of a PPy/P 3 CHT. In conclusion, the flow electropolymerization method is useful as a technology to form superlattices of the polymer semiconductors. Abstract

Thiophene/phenylene co-oligomers comprise one-dimensionally linked thiophenes and phenylenes and a large number of compounds are available by changing their total ring number and mutual arrangement in the molecule. A simple molecular designing principle produces not only straight molecules, but also those with various molecular shapes (e.g. zigzag and bent) and symmetries. In this article we investigate variation in the materials, molecular alignment characteristics, and related optical properties of these co-oligomers. In particular, we highlight the optical anisotropy such as the highly polarized emission and absorption and self-waveguided emissions of the thin films and crystals. Of the co-oligomers, the molecular long axes (i.e. transition dipole moments) of the non-straight molecules stand upright against the substrate plane or the ab-plane of the crystals. This feature causes the high optical anisotropy and strong electric interactions between the transition dipoles. The applications of the co-oligomer materials to the electronic devices like field-effect transistors (FETs) are also presented. Abstract

The article illustrates and describes the architectural design of the Tsukuba Capio facility in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan. Designed by Yoshio Taniguchi of Taniguchi and Associates, it is a multipurpose arena designed for indoor sports and conventions, a theater for dramatic performances and rooms for cultural activities. It is surrounded by parks on both its north and south sides. The plan for the building is for it to be designed in association with its surroundings and that it is to be presented as a new townscape.

Abstract

The article describes an architectural design project by Taniguchi and Associates involving the Toyota Municipal Museum of Art in Japan. The museum, which characterizes images of the past and the present simultaneously, was built on an historical site in the vicinity of the ruins of a castle. It is comprised of a three-dimensional composition of functions to make use of the level differences within the site. The lower level houses the administration offices and delivery entrance, while main entrance is located on the middle level. A white glazed structure is centrally located, which features permanent exhibition galleries.

Abstract

The article presents information on Kasai Rinkai Park View Point Visitors Center at Edogawa Ward in Tokyo, Japan. Build on a reclaimed land, the building was constructed in order to provide a lounge for visitors of Rasai Rinkai Park. The visitors center also symbolize the completion of the redevelopment projects that took place in the area. A glass rectangular superstructure and a reinforced concrete substructure make up the center. Architect for the center is Taniguchi and Associates. The project was completed in March 1995.

199. Bipyridyl oxadiazoles as efficient and durable electron-transporting and hole-blocking molecular materials

Abstract

We have demonstrated new and efficient electron transporting (ET) and hole blocking (HB) materials for organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). The bipyridyl-substituted oxadiazole derivatives can form a stable glassy state with glass transition temperatures greater than 100 °C. The bipyridyl-substituted oxadiazole derivatives have excellent ET, HB and electron accepting ability and also exhibit electrical operation durability. Bipyridyl-substituted oxadiazoles are a promising candidate for ET and HB materials for OLEDs.
