The true importance of the warm, AGN-driven outflows for the evolution of galaxies remains\ud uncertain. Measurements of the radial extents of the outflows are key for quantifying their\ud masses and kinetic powers, and also establishing whether the AGN outflows are galaxywide.\ud Therefore, as part of a larger project to investigate the significance of warm, AGNdriven\ud outflows in the most rapidly evolving galaxies in the local universe, here we present\ud deep Hubble Space Telescope (HST) narrow-band [O III] λ5007 observations of a complete\ud sample of eight nearby ULIRGs with optical AGN nuclei. Combined with the complementary\ud information provided by our ground-based spectroscopy, the HST images show that the warm\ud gas outflows are relatively compact for most of the objects in the sample: in three objects, the\ud outflow regions are barely resolved at the resolution of HST (0.065 < R[O III] < 0.12 kpc); in a\ud further four cases, the outflows are spatially resolved but with flux-weighted mean radii in the\ud range 0.65 < R[O III] < 1.2 kpc; and in only one object (Mrk273) is there clear evidence for a\ud more extended outflow, with a maximum extent of R[O III] ∼ 5 kpc. Overall, our observations\ud show little evidence for the galaxy-wide outflows predicted by some models of AGN feedback.

We report the discovery of a radio-quiet type 2 quasar (SDSS J165315.06+234943.0 nicknamed the ‘Beetle’ at z = 0.103) with unambiguous evidence for active galactic nucleus (AGN) radio-induced feedback acting across a total extension of ∼46 kpc and up to ∼26 kpc from the AGN. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first radio-quiet system where radio-induced feedback has been securely identified at ≫several kpc from the AGN. The morphological, ionization and kinematic properties of the extended ionized gas are correlated with the radio structures. We find along the radio axis (a) enhancement of the optical line emission at the location of the radio hotspots (b) turbulent gas kinematics (FWHM ∼ 380–470 km s−1) across the entire spatial range circumscribed by them (c) ionization minima for the turbulent gas at the location of the hot spots, (d) high temperature Te ≳ 1.9 × 104 K at the NE hotspot. Turbulent gas is also found far from the radio axis, ∼25 kpc in the perpendicular direction. We propose a scenario in which the radio structures have perforated the interstellar medium of the galaxy and escaped into the circumgalactic medium. While advancing, they have interacted with in situ gas modifying its properties. Our results show that jets of modest power can be the dominant feedback mechanism acting across huge volumes in radio-quiet systems, including highly accreting luminous AGNs, where radiative mode feedback may be expected.

AGN-driven gas outflows may play an important role in the evolution of galaxies, as they impact on the growth on the central supermassive black hole as well on the star formation of the host galaxy. Much of the detailed physics of these gas outflows, and their actual impact on the host galaxy, is still not well understood. We present a detailed analysis, using ALMA observations, of the radio-jet driven outflow of molecular gas in the nearby radio-loud Seyfert galaxy IC 5063 which allows to derive important physical parameters of the gas and the outflow which, in turn, provide crucial input to numerical models. In recent years, a surprising result in the field of AGN-driven outflows has been that the cold phases of the gas (atomic and molecular) in some galaxies are the massive components of these outflows, despite the huge amounts of energy involved in driving these outflows. However, why most of the outflowing gas should be molecular/atomic, and in general, what are the physical conditions of the gas in the outflows and what really drives them, are still open questions. We present the results obtained from ALMA observations of multiple CO transitions and other molecules of what appears to be a textbook case of a jet-driven multi- phase outflow in the central regions of the Seyfert galaxy IC 5063. The data on multiple transitions allow us to derive the physical conditions in the different regions of the outflowing molecular gas. The signature of the impact of the radio jet is clearly seen in the spatial distribution of the excitation temperature and pressure of the outflowing gas, with the highest excitation and pressure found for the gas with the highest outflow velocities. We obtain a detailed three- dimensional picture of the outflow, and its kinematics, and find that outflowing molecular gas is present across the entire region co-spatial with the radio plasma, providing unambiguous evidence that the radio jets/cocoon are responsible for the outflow. The detailed information about the physical condition of the gas in a fast outflow will serve as template for the signatures of the impact of a radio plasma jet on a gas-rich ISM and its associated star formation, and guide the studies of outflows in other galaxies, including higher redshift objects.

International audience; This paper presents the spatially resolved star formation history (2D-SFH) of a small sample of four local mergers: the early-stage mergers IC 1623, NGC 6090, and the Mice, and the more advanced merger NGC 2623, by analyzing IFS data from the CALIFA survey and PMAS in LArr mode. Full spectral fitting techniques are applied to the datacubes to obtain the spatially resolved mass growth histories, the time evolution of the star formation rate intensity (ΣSFR), and the local specific star formation rate (sSFR), over three different time scales (30 Myr, 300 Myr, and 1 Gyr). The results are compared with non-interacting Sbc–Sc galaxies, to quantify if there is an enhancement of the star formation and to trace its time scale and spatial extent. Our results for the three LIRGs (IC 1623 W, NGC 6090, and NGC 2623) show that a major phase of star formation is occurring in time scales of 107 yr to few 108 yr, with global SFR enhancements of between approximately two and six with respect to main-sequence star forming (MSSF) galaxies. In the two early-stage mergers IC 1623 W and NGC 6090, which are between first pericentre passage and coalescence, the most remarkable increase of the SFR with respect to non-interacting spirals occurred in the last 30 Myr, and it is spatially extended, with enhancements of factors between two and seven both in the centres (r < 0.5 half light radius, HLR), and in the disks (r > 1 HLR). In the more advanced merger NGC 2623 an extended phase of star formation occurred on a longer time scale of ~1 Gyr, with a SFR enhancement of a factor of approximately two-to-three larger than the one in Sbc–Sc MSSF galaxies over the same period, probably relic of the first pericentre passage epoch. A SFR enhancement in the last 30 Myr is also present, but only in NGC 2623 centre, by a factor of three. In general, the spatially resolved SFHs of the LIRG-mergers are consistent with the predictions from high spatial resolution simulations. In contrast, the star formation in the Mice, specially in Mice B, is not enhanced but inhibited with respect to Sbc–Sc MSSF galaxies. The fact that the gas fraction of Mice B is smaller than in most non-interacting spirals, and that the Mice are close to a prograde orbit, represents a new challenge for the models, which must cover a larger space of parameters in terms of the availability of gas and the orbital characteristics.

Although now routinely incorporated into hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy evolution, the true importance of the feedback effect of the outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGN) remains uncertain from an observational perspective. This is due to a lack of accurate information on the densities, radial scales and level of dust extinction of the outflow regions. Here we use the unique capabilities of VLT/Xshooter to investigate the warm outflows in a representative sample of 9 local (0.06 $, Comment: 31 pages, 12 figures, 21 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed study of the properties of the molecular gas in the fast outflow driven by the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the nearby radio-loud Seyfert galaxy IC 5063. By using ALMA observations of a number of tracers of the molecular gas (12CO(1-0), 12CO(2-1), 12CO(3-2), 13CO(2-1) and HCO+(4-3)), we map the differences in excitation, density and temperature of the gas as function of position and kinematics. The results show that in the immediate vicinity of the radio jet, a fast outflow, with velocities up to 800 km s-1, is occurring of which the gas has high excitation with excitation temperatures in the range 30-55 K, demonstrating the direct impact of the jet on the ISM. The relative brightness of the 12CO lines, as well as that of 13CO(2-1) vs. 12CO(2-1), show that the outflow is optically thin. We estimate the mass of the molecular outflow to be at least 1.2 × 106 M- and likely to be a factor between two and three larger than this value. This is similar to that of the outflow of atomic gas, but much larger than that of the ionised outflow, showing that the outflow in IC 5063 is dominated by cold gas. The total mass outflow rate we estimated to be ~12 M- yr-1. The mass of the outflow is much smaller than the total gas mass of the ISM of IC 5063. Therefore, although the influence of the AGN and its radio jet is very significant in the inner regions of IC 5063, globally speaking the impact will be very modest. We used RADEX non-LTE modelling to explore the physical conditions of the molecular gas in the outflow. Models with the outflowing gas being quite clumpy give the most consistent results and our preferred solutions have kinetic temperatures in the range 20-100 K and densities between 105 and 106 cm-3. The resulting pressures are 106-107.5 K cm-3, about two orders of magnitude higher than in the outer quiescent disk. The highest densities and temperatures are found in the regions with the fastest outflow. The results strongly suggest that the outflow in IC 5063 is driven by the radio plasma jet expanding into a clumpy gaseous medium and creating a cocoon of (shocked) gas which is pushed away from the jet axis resulting in a lateral outflow, very similar to what is predicted by numerical simulations. © ESO, 2017.

The origin of the unification model for AGN was the detection of broad hydrogen recombination lines in the optical polarized spectrum of the Seyfert 2 galaxy (Sy2) NGC 1068. Since then, a search for the hidden broad-line region (HBLR) of nearby Sy2s started, but polarized broad lines have only been detected in ~30-40% of the nearby Sy2s observed to date. Here we present new VLT/FORS2 optical spectropolarimetry of a sample of 15 Sy2s, including Compton-thin and Compton-thick sources. The sample includes six galaxies without previously published spectropolarimetry, some of them normally treated as non-hidden BLR (NHBLR) objects in the literature, and four Sy2s classified as NHBLR based on previous data. We report >4sigma detections of a HBLR in 11 of these galaxies (73% of the sample). Our results confirm that at least some NHBLRs were misclassified, bringing previous publications reporting differences between HBLR and NHBLR objects into question. We detect broad Ha and Hb components in polarized light for 9 targets, and just broad Ha for the other two. We do not find any correlation between the properties of the polarized spectra and the column densities measured from the X-rays or torus inclination, but a larger sample is required to confirm this.
