Abstract

The Time Projection Chamber (TPC) at TRIUMF was developed for the search for muon-electron conversion, a lepton number violating process. This paper describes the data acquisition system in use for the last two years. Basic components of the system are a multi-crate CAMAC acquisition system, external memory, PDP 11/40 and VAX 11/780 coupled through DECNET. A discussion of the various software packages for data-taking and on-line track reconstruction follows.

Abstract

A gated grid system has been developed for the TRIUMF time projection chamber to suppress drift field distortions caused by positive produced at the endcap proportional wires. Good spatial resolution in the TPC has been thereby maintained over a large range of counting rates.

Abstract

A superallowed Fermi ..beta.. transition (J/sup ..pi../ = 0/sup +/, T = 1) from /sup 62/Ga (A = 4n + 2) has been identified. The measured half-life and ..beta.. ray end point energy are T/sub 1/2/ = 116.4 +- 1.5 msec and E/sub betamax/ = 8.3 +- 0.3 MeV, respectively. The Ft value for the transition has been evaluated with the measured half-life and estimated ..beta.. ray end point energy from a phenomenological analysis of the Coulomb displacement energies of isobaric analog states. The obtained value is Ft = ft (1 +delta/sub R/)(1 - delta/sub C/) = 3103 +- 44 sec which turns out to be 0.6% larger than that expected for such 0/sup +/-0/sup +/ superallowed ..beta.. transitions.

A progress report on a search for the lepton flavor violating reaction μ − +Ti → e − +Ti is presented. No evidence for this process has yet been found leading to an upper limit −11 (90% confidence level) relative to ordinary muon capture.

Abstract

Cross sections for true absorption by nuclei (Al, Ti, Cu, Sn, Au) of pions (${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}$) in the energy range from 20 to 280 MeV were measured by a new method of detecting nuclear $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays following the reaction. The incident-energy dependence of the cross sections in the low-energy region (${T}_{\ensuremath{\pi}}l50$ MeV) was well reproduced by an optical-model calculation, while the higher-energy part seems to indicate complex mechanisms of pion absorption.

Abstract

The positron spectrum from the decay ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{e}^{+}{\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ has been examined for evidence of peaks arising from an admixture in the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{e}$ weak eigenstate of massive neutrinos. Limits on the intensity of such peaks, together with the measured $\ensuremath{\pi}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}e\ensuremath{\nu}$ branching ratio, have been used to derive constraints on the neutrino mixing parameters over the range $4 \mathrm{MeV}lm(\ensuremath{\nu})l135 \mathrm{MeV}$.

158. The spatial resolution of the time projection chamber at triumf

Abstract

The spatial resolution of the time projection chamber at TRIUMF has been investigated. The best resolution, σ ⋍ 200 μ m , occurs at the minimum drift length and for an optimum track to anode crossing angle determined by the magnetic field. The resolution worsens for tracks crossing at larger or smaller angles and for longer drift lengths. The observed resolution is quantitatively reproduced by considering the diffusion of the drifting electrons, the track to anode crossing angle, E × B effects near the anode wire and the discrete nature of the ionization process.

Abstract

A new measurement of the ..pi -->..e..nu.. branching ratio yields GAMMA(..pi -->..e..nu..+..pi -->..e..nu gamma..)/GAMMA(..pi --> mu nu..+..pi --> mu nu.. ..gamma..) = (1.218 +- 0.014) x 10/sup -4./ The measured value is in good agreement with the standard-model prediction incorporating electron-muon universality.

A search has been performed for the lepton-flavor-nonconserving reaction ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$+Ti\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$+Ti using a time-projection chamber. No candidate events were observed, resulting in a limit of \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$+Ti\ensuremath{\rightarrow}${e}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$+Ti) / \ensuremath{\Gamma}(${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$+Ti\ensuremath{\rightarrow}capture) 1.6\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}${10}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}11}$ (90% C.L.) for this reaction relative to ordinary muon capture.

Abstract

Low-lying levels in 188 pt were studied using the 191 Ir(p, 4nγ) 188 Pt reaction and higher spin members of the quasi-γ band were proposed. The results resemble a slightly perturbed phonon scheme, from comparisons with macroscopic calculations which would remove the degeneracy of the phonon multiplets. The importance of mass parameter renormalization is pointed out.

Abstract

A low-momentum secondary beam channel for pion-and muon-experiments has been constructed at the KEK proton synchrotron. Pions produced at 90° to the 12 GeV primary proton beam are extracted with a simple beam optics of two quadrupole doublets and a single 45° bending magnet. The large angle extraction resulted in a good π/e ratio of more than 80% for p π > 150 MeV/ c . The maximum available pion intensity for p π = 200 MeV/ c is 10 7 /pulse. The channel can be used parasitically to other high-energy experiments. The design of the channel, results of the performance tests and some experiments using the channel are described.

Abstract

We have constructed an apparatus to search for the lepton number violating decay of the muon μ-Z → e-Z. The apparatus is based on the Time Projection Chamber principle. The main advantages are a large solid angle 60%, simple trigger, good energy resolution, particle identification and simplified electronics. The details of the apparatus are described and preliminary results are given.

Abstract

A measurement of the ..pi -->..e..nu.. branching ratio using a NaI(Tl) spectrometer yields a value GAMMA((..pi -->..e..nu..)+(..pi -->..e..nu gamma..))/ GAMMA((..pi --> mu nu..)+(..pi --> mu nu gamma..)) = (1. 218 +- 0.014) x 10/sup -4/. The result is consistent with expectations of the standard electroweak theory incorporating electron-muon universality.

Abstract

The design and performance of a wide-range multi-stop time-to-digital converter (TDC) with a minimum time increment of 0.1 μs are described. The differential non-linearity of the TDC is improved to be less than 0.6% by the use of a strobe signal synchronized to the clock pulse. The present TDC has been applied to lifetime measurements for isomers in 199 Tl and 153 Tb and the ground state of 12 B.

A search has been carried out for the production of neutrinos in the mass range 60 to 130 MeV coupling to the electron in the decay ..pi../sup +/..-->..e/sup +/..nu... The dominant background from the ..pi..-..mu..-e decay chain has been suppressed by use of a new technique leading to more than an order of magnitude greater sensitivity than achieved previously.

Data from a new study of the decay ..pi -->..e..nu.. are used to place bounds on Majoron-neutrino couplings and to obtain inclusive branching-ratio limits for ..pi -->..e..nu..M, where M is a new particle with a mass in the range 0 to 125 MeV. A limit for the process ..pi../sup +/..-->..e/sup +/..nu nu..nu-bar is also obtained.

A new measurement of the π→eν branching ratio is described. The π→eν positron spectrum, in which the background from μ→eνν has been highly suppressed, has been examined for evidence of massive neutrinos and and other exotic processes postulated in extensions to the standard model of electroweak interactions.

Abstract

The time projection chamber at TRIUMF is being used to search for muon‐electron conversion. The best spatial resolution in the TPC, σ≂200 μm, occurs at the minimum drift length and for an optimum track‐to‐anode crossing angle determined by the magnetic field. The observed resolution is dependent on th diffusion of the drifting electrons, the track‐to‐anode crossing angle, E↘×B↘ effects near the anode wire and the discrete nature of the ionization process. Distortions due to positive ions leaking back into the drift volume from the anode wire region have been nearly eliminated by the use of a pulsed dual grid system.

Abstract

Respiratory infections of 19 subjects of advanced age and/or with underlying respiratory disease were treated with cefoperazone (CPZ) and its clinical effects were studied. Sixteen subjects suffered from respiratory tract infection and 3 subjects had pneumonia. The age of the subjects ranged from 39 to 77 years with the mean of 63.8, 7 of them being more than 70 years of age. The underlying respiratory diseases included chronic pulmonary emphysema in 6 subjects, diffuse panbronchiolitis in 3, bronchiectasis in 3, silicosis in 2 and one each of chronic bronchitis, pulmonary fibrosis, lung cancer and old pulmonary tuberculosis. One case, 75 years of age, had renal insufficiency. The daily dose of CPZ was 4 grams in 18 of the 19 subjects and the duration of administration ranged 5 to 22 days. The remaining 1 subject received 2 g of CPZ daily for 6 days. Clinical effects were judged from the changes in fever, cough, amount of sputum, dyspnea, rales, cyanosis, chest X-ray, white blood cell counts, CRP, erythrocyte sedimentation rates and results of sputum culture. Clinical effects were good in 16 subjects, fair in 1, and poor in 2. Bacteriological follow-up was carried out in 13 subjects. Infecting bacteria were eliminated from 5 subjects, reduced in 2 and, in 4 subjects, they were replaced by other bacteria. In 1 subject, P. aeruginosa was isolated from sputum even after the treatment with CPZ, and in another subject H. influenzae relapsed immediately after the cessation of the CPZ treatment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The question of muon — to — electron conversion is as old as the muon itself. When it was realised that the muon does not decay into electron and photon the concept of separately conserved muonic and electronic lepton numbers was introduced as an ad hoc hypothesis, without profound justification. But it is only recently that this question has become of great importance, with the advent of the gauge theories of fundamental interactions. The “standard model” based on the electroweak group SU(2) × U(l) with the minimal particle content (no right-handed neutrino, only one Higgs doublet) does not allow any muon number (or any partial lepton number) violation. But the “standard model” is not believed to be the final theory of nature. It has to be modified, generalised, and hopefully embedded in a more complete unification scheme. To do this there are many possibilities which lead to muon number violation in a very natural and inescapable way. Therefore the study of muon number (and other lepton number) violation is one of the most important issues in particle physics. Processes which violate muon number have already been searched for extensively at the meson factories. They have not been observed but very stringent upper limits for their existence have been obtained, which put strong constraints on theoretical models, in particular on mixing parameters and masses of hypothetical particles on the TeV scale. All muon number violating processes are important and must be studied. They will be discussed at length by other speakers at this conference.

Abstract

Searches have been performed for neutrinoless muon-electron conversion and muon-positron conversion using a time projection chamber. An upper limit on the branching ratio for the coherent reaction R(..mu../sup -/ +Ti..-->..e/sup -/+Ti) ..e/sup +/+Ca no events were observed for positron momenta p>96 MeV/c leading to an upper limit on the partial branching ratio relative to ordinary muon capture GAMMA/sub p//sub >//sub 96/(..mu../sup -/+Ti..-->..e/sup +/ +Ca)/GAMMA(..mu../sup -/+Ti..-->..capture) ..e/sup +/+Ca)/GAMMA(..mu../sup -/ +Ti..-->..capture)

Abstract

The width and energy of the pionic sodium 2p-1s X-ray has been measured using a Compton suppressed germanium spectrometer. The resulting reduction of the continuum Compton background has allowed a more detailed determination of the X-ray. The values obtained are: Energy = 276.45(± 0.27, ± 0.33) keV; Width = 17.1(± 1.1, ± 1.2) keV. The measured width is in better agreement with optical model predictions than previous measurements which gave anomalously narrow values.

Abstract

The X-ray energies and widths of the pionic 4f-3d and 5g-4f transitions have been measured in 208 Pb and 209 Bi. The 3d widths obtained are in reasonable agreement with theory, and do not support the anomalously small values previously reported.

Abstract

In this paper we present new results on upper limits for the search of Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNL) with data collected by NA48/2 (2003-2004), NA62-RK (2007) and NA62 (2015) CERN experiments. The data collected with different trigger configuration allow to search for both long and short living heavy neutrinos in the mass range below the kaon mass. In addition the status of the search for K+ → π+vv with the NA62 detector will be briefly presented.

Abstract

Design of the central drift chamber for BNL experiment 787 and measurement of the decay K+??+??? are discussed. A jet chamber type cell with 6 sense wires and no interspersed field wires has been designed to achieve good spatial resolution and efficiency in a 1 T magnetic field. Results of the testing of a prototype chamber are presented.

Abstract

The NA62 experiment at the CERN SPS recorded in 2007 a large sample of K+ ? µ+?µ decays. A peak search in the missing mass spectrum of this decay is performed. In the absence of observed signal, the limits obtained on B(K+ ? µ+?h) and on the mixing matrix element |Uµ 4| are reported. The upgraded NA62 experiment started data taking in 2015. About 5×1011K+ decays have been recorded so far to measure the branching ratio of the K+ ? ?+?? decay. Preliminary results from the K+ ? ?+?? analysis based on about 5% of the 2016 statistics are reported.

Abstract

A search for heavy neutral lepton ($N$) production in $K^+\to e^+N$ decays using the data sample collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017--2018 is reported. Upper limits of the extended neutrino mixing matrix element $|U_{e4}|^2$ are established at the level of $10^{-9}$ over most of the accessible heavy neutral lepton mass range 144--462 MeV/$c^2$, with the assumption that the lifetime exceeds 50 ns. These limits improve significantly upon those of previous production and decay searches. The $|U_{e4}|^2$ range favoured by Big Bang Nucleosynthesis is excluded up to a mass of about 340 MeV/$c^2$., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Physics Letters B (28 June 2020)

Abstract

A 17-in. video rate full color Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Display (FLCD) with 720×916 dots, using τ-Vmin mode was developed. The full color moving images with 256 gray levels for each color was displayed by the digital gray scale method combining 2 bits spatial dither and 4 bits temporal dither. The response speed of FLC material is very fast (12μs/line) and the 4 bits temporal dither with video rate scanning was realized. The FLCD shows a contrast ratio of 60 : 1, a wide viewing angle due to the in-plane switching, and strong shock stability (20 kg/cm2) due to the spacer walls structure. This paper presents a high potential of FLCD for the large-size direct-view video-rate full-color simple-passive-matrix flat panel display.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effects of a stimulus response task using virtual reality (VR) for unilateral spatial neglect (USN)., Design: Double-blind randomized controlled trial., Setting: Acute phase hospital where stroke patients are hospitalized., Participants: The participants were 42 patients (N=42) with right-hemisphere cerebral damage who had been experiencing USN in their daily lives. They were randomly assigned to 3 groups: a stimulus response task with a background shift (SR+BS group), a stimulus response task without a background shift (SR group), and an object gazing task (control group)., Interventions: The stimulus response task was to search for balloons that suddenly appeared on the VR screen. A background shift was added to highlight the search in the neglected space. The control task was to maintain a controlled gaze on a balloon that appeared on the VR screen. The intervention period was 5 days., Main Outcome Measures: The primary outcome was the participants' scores on a stimulus-driven attention test (SAT) using the reaction time. The stimuli of the SAT were divided into 6 blocks of 3 lines on each side (-3 to +3). The secondary outcomes were their scores on the Behavioral Intention Test conventional, Catherine Bergego Scale, and straight ahead pointing tests., Results: In the SAT, there were significant interaction effects of reaction time between time and group factors in left-2, right+2, and right+3. The SR+BS and SR groups showed significant improvements in the reaction time of left-2 and right+3 compared with the control group. Moreover, the SR+BS group showed a significant improvement in the reaction time of left-2, which was the neglected space, compared with the SR group. Abstract

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a rare disease in low-incidence countries like Japan, where general physicians have fewer experience with TBM. Despite its proper treatment and early improvement of the condition, TBM often causes paradoxical reactions (PRs), which can lead to severe complications such as stroke. As PRs in the brain are difficult to detect without regular neuroimaging surveillance and have a later onset than in other organs, delayed treatment can be fatal. We report a case of a 54-year-old, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative man who presented with TBM and miliary tuberculosis (TB) in an unconscious state. Standard anti-tuberculous therapy with adjunctive systemic high-dose dexamethasone brought rapid clinical and microbiological improvement, which allowed the dexamethasone to be tapered. However, he developed cerebral infarction with left hemiplegia due to a TBM-related PR five months after admission. Therefore, the initial high-dose dexamethasone was again added to the anti-tuberculous drugs, achieving the significant effects on the PR-related lesions. Anti-tuberculous drugs had been administered for 3 years and the dexamethasone was carefully tapered. Nevertheless, enlargement of PR-related lesions in the brain recurred 5 years later. Accordingly, the dose of corticosteroid was again increased, resulting in resolving the lesions. Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to clarify the effect of an intervention using a head-mounted display with a web camera set at a modified pitch angle on spatial awareness, sit-to-stand movement, and standing balance in patients with left and right hemisphere damage., Methods: The participants were 12 patients with right hemisphere damage and 12 patients with left hemisphere damage. The line bisection test, a sit-to-stand movement, and balance assessment were performed before and after the intervention. The intervention task involved pointing at targets 48 times in an upward bias condition., Results: Significant upward deviation on the line bisection test was noted in patients with right hemisphere damage. The load on the forefoot during the sit-to-stand movement was significantly increased. 194. Immediate effects of head-mounted display adaptation in cases of unilateral spatial neglect: study of straight-ahead pointing.

Abstract

[Purpose] This study aimed to clarify the effect of an adaptation of a deviation of the visual field in three axes on spatial cognition in patients with unilateral spatial neglect and distorted spatial perception in three dimensions. [Participants and Methods] Fifteen patients with cerebrovascular disease and symptoms of unilateral spatial neglect were included. Forty-eight pointing movements with a camera attached to a head-mounted display changed in three axes were compared with the control condition in which the camera was deflected only in the horizontal plane as with the prism adaptation. The main outcome measures were subjective straight-ahead pointing, line bisection, line cancellation, and star cancellation. [Results] The head-mounted display adaptive therapy was performed under conditions that varied in all three axes. The results indicated that it was possible to deflect the subjective straight-ahead pointing position to the lower left direction. [Conclusion] In contrast to the prism adaptation, which deflects the visual field in a single axis in the horizontal plane, the tri-axial adaptation corrected the median cognition in the left-right direction as well as the cognition of the body center, including the vertical direction., (2022©by the Society of Physical Therapy Science. 195. The challenge of differentiating tuberculous meningitis from bacterial meningitis.

Abstract

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is a rare but important differential diagnosis in patients with impaired consciousness. Here, we describe a case of TBM in an 83-year-old Japanese woman who presented to a local hospital with fever and decreased consciousness of 20 days' duration (from day -40). She was started on treatment for bacterial meningitis due to an increased cerebrospinal fluid cell count, but her condition did not improve. She was transferred to a second hospital on suspicion for cholecystitis, then to a university hospital when consciousness did not improve and finally to us at a fourth hospital. On day -2, diffuse granulation was seen in both lung fields on chest computed tomography, sputum Mycobacterium test was positive and adenosine deaminase was elevated in spinal fluid. We diagnosed TBM secondary to miliary tuberculosis and started treatment with steroids and anti-tuberculous drugs (day 0). However, her level of consciousness did not improve and she died at a sanatorium on day 178. Abstract

Here, we developed a method that randomly generates balloons in the left-right, up-down, and near-far spaces on a monitor using a head-mounted display. In this study, we evaluated a lack of stimulus-driven attention case that was undetected by conventional assessments such as the Behavioral Inattention Test. We could identify mild neglect with our virtual reality method, as later confirmed using the Catherine Bergego scale. After repeated practice under a tilted background space condition, the patient demonstrated a reduction in the time needed to perceive the appearing balloons, suggesting a therapeutic effect.

Abstract

Searches for the lepton number violating K^{+}→π^{-}μ^{+}e^{+} decay and the lepton flavor violating K^{+}→π^{+}μ^{-}e^{+} and π^{0}→μ^{-}e^{+} decays are reported using data collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017-2018. No evidence for these decays is found and upper limits of the branching ratios are obtained at 90% confidence level: B(K^{+}→π^{-}μ^{+}e^{+})<4.2×10^{-11}, B(K^{+}→π^{+}μ^{-}e^{+})<6.6×10^{-11} and B(π^{0}→μ^{-}e^{+})<3.2×10^{-10}. These results improve by 1 order of magnitude over previous results for these decay modes.

Abstract

Although ezetimibe has potential value as an add-on therapy to statins, it is not established whether the addition of ezetimibe to statin therapy is more effective than double-dose statin monotherapy. We conducted a crossover design study. Twenty-one coronary artery disease (CAD) patients whose lipid profiles had not achieved Japanese guideline recommendations (JAS 2017), despite receiving low-dose statin therapy, were divided into two groups. Group A received ezetimibe 10 mg in addition to the baseline dose of statin for the first 3 months and was then switched to monotherapy with a double dose of statin for the next 3 months. Group B first received a double dose of statin for 3 months and was then switched to ezetimibe 10 mg in addition to a baseline dose of statin for the next 3 months. Compared with the baseline, double-dose statin therapy reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol (from 118 ± 22 to 104 ± 15 mg/dL, P < 0.05) and malondialdehyde-modified LDL (MDA-LDL) (from 142 ± 35 to 126 ± 24 U/L, P < 0.05) but did not lower high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) (3.02 ± 0.47 and 2.98 ± 0.41 log [ng/ml]). The addition of ezetimibe to a baseline dose of statin further reduced LDL-cholesterol (to 89 ± 15, P < 0.0001) and MDA-LDL (to 114 ± 22 U/L, P < 0.001) and reduced hsCRP (to 2.78 ± 0.38 log (ng/ml), P < 0.05). The changes in the levels of MDA-LDL (R = 0.548, P = 0.010) and hsCRP (R = 0.473, P < 0.05) were significantly correlated with the change in the LDL-cholesterol level after the addition of ezetimibe. Add-on ezetimibe treatment appears superior to double-dose statin therapy in CAD patients with poorly controlled dyslipidemia in terms of reductions in LDL-cholesterol level, lipid peroxidation, and inflammation.

199. Leftward Optical Shift Induces Bias in Line Bisection: A Study with Healthy Subjects Using a Head-mounted Display.

Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to verify the effect on spatial perception in healthy young subjects of an unconscious leftward optical shift created by a head-mounted display (HMD) with an offset camera., Methods: We recruited 40 healthy right-handed adults who were divided into four groups according to the hand used in the tests and the visual direction displayed by the HMD (centered or 10° left). Each of the four groups (n = 10) undertook line bisection tasks across four combinations of variables: using a finger/stick or a mouse to point at a touch panel located 60 or 120 cm away from the subject., Results: According to the results, regardless of the hand used, when the index finger or a stick was used (reaching condition), the line bisection point was displaced significantly to the left of the center. Additionally, a major left-displacement trend was observed in the short-distance reaching task, which did not require the use of a stick. In contrast, the long-distance task required a stick to be used, and the left displacements were all smaller than those for the short-distance tasks that used the index finger., Conclusion: This finding may be explained by the subjects having sufficient experience coordinating hand and eye movements in the condition where they used their dominant hand and reached with their own arms without using a stick., Competing Interests: CONFLICTS OF INTEREST: There are no conflicts of interest to declare., (©2019 The Japanese Association of Rehabilitation Medicine.)

Abstract

Background: Although the prevalence of pneumoconiosis has been decreasing due to improvements in working conditions and regular health examinations, occupational hygiene measures are still being established. Plasterers encounter a number of hazardous materials that may be inhaled in the absence of sufficient protection., Case Presentation: A 64-year-old man who plastered without any dust protection for more than 40 years was referred to our hospital with suspected interstitial pneumonia. Mixed dust pneumoconiosis and an unusual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) pattern with fibroblastic foci were diagnosed by video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and an elemental analysis detected elements included in plaster work materials. Despite the cessation of plaster work and administration of nintedanib, the patient developed advanced respiratory failure., Conclusion: Plasterers are at an increased risk of pneumoconiosis and may have a poor prognosis when complicated by the UIP pattern. Thorough dust protection and careful monitoring are needed.
