Recent developments in the standardization of magnetic field generators have been considered for optoelectronic industrial-scale applications. In this work, a strategy to incorporate all optical components that can be used to implement a broad range of functions for communications applications is presented. We propose a circuit design for a magneto-optic interferometric system based on building blocks and subcircuits consisting of an interferometer with magneto-optic phase shifters and a magnetic field generator. The paper shows the building blocks based on elementary 2 × 2 photonics coupling components. We demonstrate that such a design can be configured as a tunable system based on the phase shift experienced by the incoming signals from two input waveguides and their transitions. Widespread adoption of Magnetic Field Generators (MFG) will require most electro-optical systems to incorporate high current devices, thereby demanding decreased power consumption due to loss reduction. Recent progress in magnetic field generator typologies has shown ways of reducing form factor while meeting better performance in terms of max current and magnetic field level based on selected transistor technologies. However, developments in the standardization of MFGs need to be considered for optoelectronic industrial-scale applications. Reasoning is a cognitive activity that leverages knowledge to generate solutions to problems. Knowledge representations in the brain require both symbolic and graphical information since visual information is figurative and conveys a large amount of information. Consequently, graphical knowledge representation is often employed in reasoning. Distance-type fuzzy inference utilizes the distance information between the antecedent and the set of facts as the basis for inference. Compared to Mamdani inference, the distance-type fuzzy inference method not only satisfies the convexity and asymptotic properties of the inference results but also adheres to the separation rule (modus ponens), a fundamental principle in inference. This paper discusses extensions of distance-type fuzzy inference methods to handle spatial figures. In this paper, we first explain the distance-type fuzzy inference method. Then, we discuss the concept representation in the feature space and independent parameters that can completely express the characteristics of a figure in space, which are defined as "characteristic parameters". Furthermore, we describe the correspondence between figures and vectors in the feature space, propose a new distance-type fuzzy inference method based on characteristic parameters and describe its characteristics. Undesirable light scattering is a fundamental cause for photon loss in nanophotonics. Rayleigh backscattering can be particularly difficult to avoid in wave-guiding systems and arises from both material defects and geometric defects at the subwavelength scale. It has recently been shown that systems exhibiting chiral dispersion due to broken time-reversal symmetry (TRS) can naturally mitigate Rayleigh backscattering, yet this has never been explored in integrated photonics. Here we demonstrate the dynamic suppression of disorder-induced Rayleigh backscattering in integrated photonics even when defects are clearly present. Our experiments are performed using lithium niobate on insulator resonators in which TRS is broken through an electrically-driven acousto-optic interaction. We experimentally observe near-complete suppression of Rayleigh backscattering within the resonator by measuring the optical states and through direct measurements of the back-scattered light. We additionally provide a new and intuitive generalization argument that explains this suppression of backscattering as a form of topological protection in synthetic space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: The article explores an innovative treatment for large liver tumors known as giant hepatic hemangiomas. These tumors, although typically benign, can cause significant health issues and symptoms, necessitating effective treatment methods. This study focuses on the use of a specific technique called superselective transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE), utilizing a bleomycin–lipiodol emulsion. The researchers aimed to assess the efficacy of this method in reducing the size of these tumors and alleviating the associated symptoms. The findings of this research are important because they provide insights into a less-invasive alternative to surgical treatment for giant hepatic hemangiomas. This study demonstrates that this technique has a high rate of technical success, with a significant reduction in tumor size observed in the majority of cases. Importantly, this approach also appears to have a manageable safety profile. The results of this study could have a significant impact on the medical community's approach to treating giant hepatic hemangiomas, offering a potentially safer and more effective treatment option than traditional surgical methods. This study evaluates the effectiveness of superselective transcatheter arterial chemoembolization (TACE) using a bleomycin–lipiodol emulsion in treating giant hepatic hemangiomas. A retrospective review included 31 patients with a mean age of 53 ± 10.42 years who underwent TACE from December 2014 to October 2022, with follow-up imaging examinations to assess outcomes. Technical success was defined as successful embolization of all feeding arteries, and clinical success was defined as a reduction in hemangioma volume by 50% or more on follow-up imaging. This study observed a 100% technical success rate. Post-embolization syndrome was common, and two cases of asymptomatic hepatic artery dissection were noted. Clinical success was achieved in 80.6% of patients, with significant volume reduction observed in the majority. Conclusively, superselective transcatheter arterial chemoembolization with bleomycin–lipiodol emulsions is presented as a viable and effective treatment option for giant hepatic hemangiomas. With no procedure-related mortality and significant volume reduction in most cases, this method offers a promising alternative to surgical intervention. Background: Few reports have performed a prognostic analysis based on bioelectrical impedance analysis in patients with radical resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), and its usefulness in prognostic analysis remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate body composition changes in patients undergoing radical resection for PDAC and analyze its impact on prognosis. Methods: The medical records of radical resection for patients with PDAC were retrospectively reviewed, and the parameters of body composition, including body weight, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass (BFM), and extracellular water-total body water ratio, from preoperatively to 12 months postoperatively, for each surgical procedure were measured based on direct segmental multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis with an InBody 770 (InBody Inc., Tokyo, Japan) device. The clinicopathological and prognostic factors were analyzed. Results: Among 79 patients who underwent radical resection for PDAC, 36 (46%), 7 (8%), and 36 (46%) underwent pancreatoduodenectomy, total pancreatectomy, and distal pancreatectomy, respectively. The multivariate overall survival analysis demonstrated that BFM loss percentage at 1 month postoperatively ≧14% (p = 0.021), lymph node metastasis (p = 0.014), and non-adjuvant chemotherapy (p < 0.001) were independent poor prognostic factors. Multivariate analysis revealed that preoperative BFM < 12 kg and preoperative albumin < 3.5 g/dL were independently associated with BFM loss percentage at 1 month postoperatively ≧14% (p = 0.021 and p = 0.047, respectively). Background: Combined hepatocellular-cholangiocarcinoma (cHCC-iCCA) is a rare type of primary liver cancer displaying characteristics of both hepatocytic and cholangiocytic differentiation. Summary: Because of its aggressive nature, patients with cHCC-iCCA exhibit a poorer prognosis than those with HCC. Surgical resection and liver transplantation may be considered curative treatment approaches; however, only a minority of patients are eligible at the time of diagnosis, and postoperative recurrence rates are high. For cases that are not eligible for surgery, locoregional and systemic therapy are often administered based on treatment protocols applied for HCC or iCCA. Owing to the rarity of this cancer, there are still no established standard treatment protocols; therefore, the choice of therapy is often personalized and guided by the suspected predominant component. Further, the genomic and molecular heterogeneity of cHCC-iCCA can severely compromise the efficacy of the available therapies. Key Messages: In the present review, we summarize the latest advances in cHCC-iCCA and attempt to clarify its terminology and molecular biology. We provide an overview of the etiology of cHCC-iCCA and present new insights into the molecular pathology of this disease that could contribute to further studies aiming to improve the patient outcomes through new systemic therapies. Optical nonreciprocity plays a significant role in quantum optics domain-underpinning a myriad of phenomena and applications. In this paper, we propose a feasible scheme to analyze the nonreciprocal optical bistability and nonreciprocal transmission in a hybrid atom-optomechanical system. We find that the nonreciprocal optical bistability behaviors can be enhanced and promoted when the atom-cavity interaction is introduced. In particular, the cavity-atom interaction also makes the photon transmission more sensitive to the propagation direction enabling the nonreciprocal transmission with the low input field intensity in a weak optomechanical coupling regime. Implementation of such scheme will demonstrate some mechanisms of optical nonreciprocity and may be beneficial for generation of the nonreciprocal optical devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Termite nest repairs are considered a defensive conduct as they reduce the colony's exposure to the external environment. Repair activities are carried out by worker castes that can be polymorphic, representing a relationship between polymorphism and divisions of functions that can enhance task completion. Repairs are influenced by the extent of damage, nest volume, and the population dynamics of the building species, which regulate the recruitment of individuals for this activity. Our objective was to verify the performances (recruitment for repair) of dimorphic workers of Constrictotermes cyphergaster (Silvestri, 1901) during the damage repair activities performed on the external walls of termite nests of different sizes. We found a significant difference in the presence of dimorphic workers that performed repairs, with greater recruitment of the small morphotype, and observed an alternation of morphotypes between initial and final repair activities, with no influence of morphotype on the replacement pattern. Our results also showed that the total number of recruited workers decreased with increasing nest volume. These results help to better understand the social organization of a Nasutitermitinae termite species and the strategies adopted to protect its colonies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Optical isolators play unique roles in photonic circuits. We have developed an optical isolator with silicon waveguides, based on a Mach–Zehnder interferometer. The device characteristics were temperature dependent. We investigated the temperature dependence of the refractive index (dn/dT) and the magneto-optical coefficient ( d\theta _f /dT) of a magneto-optical garnet Ce:YIG, and estimated these as 9.1 \times 10^-5 K−1 and 44^\circ \cdot cm^- 1 \cdot K^- 1 , respectively. We discuss the design of an athermal silicon waveguide optical isolator, in which the temperature dependences of the magneto-optical effect and refractive indices are canceled in the backward direction. Cerium substituted yttrium iron garnet (Ce:YIG) epitaxial thin films are prepared on a gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate with pulsed laser deposition. It is observed that the films grown on a GGG(111) substrate exhibit perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) as compared to films grown on a GGG(100) substrate. The developed PMA is confirmed from a magneto-optical Kerr effect, bulk magnetization, and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. Furthermore, the magnetic bubble domains are observed in the films exhibiting PMA. The observations are explained in terms of the growth direction of Ce:YIG films and the interplay of various magnetic anisotropy terms. The observed PMA is found to be tunable with the thickness of the film, and a remarkable temperature stability of the PMA is observed in all the studied films of Ce:YIG deposited on a GGG(111) substrate. In this study, crystalline cobalt ferrite thin films with large Faraday rotation (FR) coefficient were deposited on silicon by radiofrequency magnetron sputtering. An (100)-oriented MgO buffer layer was employed to solve the film/substrate discrepancy. A giant FR coefficient of 25 600 deg cm−1 was achieved for a cobalt ferrite film deposited at a substrate temperature (ST) of 600 °C. Moreover, the magnetic easy axis of the films switched from in-plane (IP) to out-of-plane orientation with increasing ST. This switching in the easy axis could be attributed to induced IP stress in the films with high deposition temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most on-chip optical isolators utilize nonreciprocal magneto-optic (MO) garnet-materials that require an external bias magnetic field to operate. The magnetic field is applied through incorporation of either a permanent magnet or an active electromagnet. Permanent magnets add significantly to device bulk and electromagnets increase fabrication complexity and power consumption. Hence, it is highly desirable to reduce or eliminate the magnetizing component in these devices. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a first of its kind bias-magnet-free (BMF) on-chip waveguide optical isolator with integrated Polarcor UltraThin polarizers. The BMF isolator device obviates the need for magnetizing components while possessing superior performance, relative to other on-chip isolators, with ≥25 dB of isolation ratio (IR), and ≤3.5 dB of insertion loss (IL) across the entire infrared optical C-band. Magnetic nanostructures sustaining different types of optical modes have been used for magnetometry and label-free ultrasensitive refractive index probing, where the main challenge is the realization of compact devices that are able to transfer this technology from research laboratories to smart industry. This Perspective discusses the state-of-the-art and emerging trends in realizing innovative sensors containing new architectures and materials exploiting the unique ability to actively manipulate their optical properties using an externally applied magnetic field. In addition to the well-established use of propagating and localized plasmonic fields, in the so-called magnetoplasmonics, we identified a new potential of the all-dielectric platforms for sensing to overcome losses inherent to metallic components. In describing recent advances, emphasis is placed on several feasible industrial applications, trying to give our vision on the future of this promising field of research merging optics, magnetism, and nanotechnology. Background: Delayed platelet engraftment is a common complication after umbilical cord blood transplantation (UCBT), and there is no standard therapy. Avatrombopag (AVA) is a second-generation thrombopoietin (TPO) receptor agonist (TPO-RA) that has shown efficacy in immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). However, few reports have focused on its efficacy in patients diagnosed with thrombocytopenia after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT)., Methods: We conducted a retrospective study to evaluate the efficacy of AVA as a first-line TPO-RA in 65 patients after UCBT; these patients were compared with 118 historical controls. Response rates, platelet counts, megakaryocyte counts in bone marrow, bleeding events, adverse events and survival rates were evaluated in this study. Platelet reconstitution differences were compared between different medication groups. Multivariable analysis was used to explore the independent beneficial factors for platelet implantation., Results: Fifty-two patients were given AVA within 30 days post-UCBT, and the treatment was continued for more than 7 days to promote platelet engraftment (AVA group); the other 13 patients were given AVA for secondary failure of platelet recovery (SFPR group). The median time to platelet engraftment was shorter in the AVA group than in the historical control group (32.5 days vs. 38.0 days, Z = 2.095, P = 0.036). Among the 52 patients in the AVA group, 46 achieved an overall response (OR) (88.5%), and the cumulative incidence of OR was 91.9%. Patients treated with AVA only had a greater 60-day cumulative incidence of platelet engraftment than patients treated with recombinant human thrombopoietin (rhTPO) only or rhTPO combined with AVA (95.2% vs. 84.5% vs. 80.6%, P <0.001). Patients suffering from SFPR had a slightly better cumulative incidence of OR (100%, P = 0.104). Background: Living-donor liver transplantation has been widely performed as an alternative to the scarce liver grafts from deceased donors. More studies are reporting favorable outcomes of left liver graft (LLG). This study compared the clinical outcomes between living-donor liver transplantation using LLG and right liver graft (RLG) with similar graft-to-recipient body weight ratios., Methods: This study analyzed 4601 patients from a multicenter observational cohort using the Korean Organ Transplantation Registry between 2014 and 2021. After matching the Model for End-stage Liver Disease score and graft-to-recipient body weight ratios because of the extremely different number in each group, the LLG and RLG groups comprised 142 (25.1%) and 423 (74.9%) patients, respectively., Results: For donors, the median age was higher in the LLG group than in the RLG group (34 y [range, 16-62 y] versus 30 y [16-66 y] ; P = 0.002). For recipients, the LLG group showed higher 90-d mortality than the RLG group (11 [7.7%] versus 9 [2.1%]; P = 0.004). The long-term graft survival was significantly worse in the LLG group (P = 0.011). In multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis for graft survival, LLG was not a significant risk factor (hazard ratio, 1.01 [0.54-1.87]; P = 0.980). Otherwise, donor age (≥40 y; 2.18 y [1.35-3.52 y]; P = 0.001) and recipients' body mass index (<18.5 kg/m2; 2.98 kg/m2 [1.52-5.84 kg/m2]; P = 0.002) were independent risk factors for graft survival., Conclusions: Although the short-term and long-term graft survival was worse in the LLG group, LLG was not an independent risk factor for graft survival in multivariate analysis. Human phosphoglycerate kinase 1(hPGK1) is a key glycolytic enzyme that regulates the balance between ADP and ATP concentrations inside the cell. Phosphorylation of hPGK1 at S203 and S256 has been associated with enzyme import from the cytosol to the mitochondria and the nucleus respectively. These changes in subcellular locations drive tumorigenesis and are likely associated with site-specific changes in protein stability. In this work, we investigate the effects of site-specific phosphorylation on thermal and kinetic stability and protein structural dynamics by hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We also investigate the binding of 3-phosphoglycerate and Mg-ADP using these approaches. We show that the phosphomimetic mutation S256D reduces hPGK1 kinetic stability by 50-fold, with no effect of the mutation S203D. Calorimetric studies of ligand binding show a large decrease in affinity for Mg-ADP in the S256D variant, whereas Mg-ADP binding to the WT and S203D can be accurately investigated using protein kinetic stability and binding thermodynamic models. HDX and MD simulations confirmed the destabilization caused by the mutation S256D (with some long-range effects on stability) and its reduced affinity for Mg-ADP due to the strong destabilization of its binding site (particularly in the apo-state). Our research provides evidence suggesting that modifications in protein stability could potentially enhance the translocation of hPGK1 to the nucleus in cancer. GORAB is a key regulator of Golgi vesicle transport and protein glycanation. Loss of GORAB function in gerodermia osteodysplastica (GO) causes shortening of glycosaminoglycan chains, leading to extracellular matrix disorganization that results in wrinkled skin, osteoporosis and elevated TGF-β signaling. In this study, we investigated the role of TGF-β-signaling, oxidative stress, and resulting cellular senescence in the osteoporosis phenotype of GO. Treatment of Gorab Prx1 conditional knockouts with the TGF-β neutralizing antibody 1D11 rescued the trabecular bone loss, indicating that TGF-β overactivation causes osteoporosis in GO. Using an inducible knockout system, we demonstrated that TGF-β dysregulation was not a cell-intrinsic effect of GORAB inactivation, but a consequence of a disorganized extracellular matrix. Enhanced TGF-β signaling caused elevated Nox4 expression in Gorab Prx1 mutants and in GO patients' fibroblasts, resulting in overproduction of mitochondrial superoxide. The resulting oxidative stress was detected in GORAB null cells and also in wildtype bystander cells. The same effect was observed in zebrafish after TALEN-mediated gorab inactivation, indicating that the pathway is evolutionarily conserved. Treating Gorab Prx1 mutants with the antioxidant N-acetylcysteine ameliorated the osteoporosis phenotype. TGF-β induced oxidative stress coincided with accumulation of DNA damage and elevated expression of senescence markers. Inactivation of Cdkn2a in the Gorab Prx1 rescued the osteoporosis phenotype. Reduced colony formation and altered subpopulations of bone marrow stromal cells were normalized upon inactivation of Cdkn2a, thus further demonstrating the relevance of cellular senescence in the pathogenesis. β-arrestin2, a member of the arrestin family, mediates the desensitization and internalization of most G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and functions as a scaffold protein in signalling pathways. Previous studies have demonstrated that β-arrestin2 expression is dysregulated in malignant tumours, fibrotic diseases, cardiovascular diseases and metabolic diseases, suggesting its pathological roles. Transcription and post-transcriptional modifications can affect the expression of β-arrestin2. Furthermore, post-translational modifications, such as phosphorylation, ubiquitination, SUMOylation and S-nitrosylation affect the cellular localization of β-arrestin2 and its interaction with downstream signalling molecules, which further regulate the activity of β-arrestin2. This review summarizes the structure and function of β-arrestin2 and reveals the mechanisms involved in the regulation of β-arrestin2 at multiple levels. Background: Kidney transplantation (KT) leads to body composition change, particularly increasing the fat mass. However, limited researches have focused on the long-term follow-up of these changes and factors influencing body composition after KT., Methods: This study evaluated body composition in 31 adult KT recipients, measuring body mass index (BMI), the psoas muscle mass index (PMI) representing muscle mass, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue (VAT and SAT) representing fat mass, and skeletal muscle radiodensity (SMR) representing muscle quality before KT and at 2, 4, and 6 years posttransplantation using computed tomography. Linear mixed models (LMM) analyzed temporal changes and contributing factors, while growth curve models assessed influence of these factors on body composition changes posttransplantation., Results: Following KT, BMI, and PMI remained stable, while SAT increased significantly, revealing a 1.30-fold increase from baseline 2 years after transplantation. Similarly, a substantial increase in VAT was observed, with a 1.47-fold increase from baseline 2 years after transplantation with a further 1.75-fold increase 6 years after transplantation. In contrast, SMR decreased with a 0.86-fold decrease from baseline after 2 years. VAT increase was significantly influenced by the interaction between posttransplantation and dialysis duration. Growth curve models confirmed this interaction effect persistently influenced VAT increase posttransplantation., Conclusions: The study revealed that KT promoted significant alterations in body composition characterized by increase in the VAT and SAT and a decline in SMR. Social insects have developed a broad diversity of nesting and foraging strategies. One of these, inquilinism, occurs when one species (the inquiline) inhabits the nest built and occupied by another species (the host). Obligatory inquilines must overcome strong constraints upon colony foundation and development, due to limited availability of host colonies. To reveal how inquilinism shapes reproductive strategies in a termite host-inquiline dyad, we carried out a microsatellite marker study on Inquilinitermes inquilinus and its host Constrictotermes cavifrons. The proportion of simple, extended and mixed families was recorded in both species, as well as the presence of neotenics, parthenogenesis and multiple foundations. Most host colonies (95%) were simple families and all were monodomous. By contrast, the inquiline showed a higher proportion of extended (30%) and mixed (5%) families, and frequent neotenics (in 25% of the nests). This results from the simultaneous foundation in host nests of numerous incipient colonies, which, as they grow, may compete, fight, or merge. We also documented the use of parthenogenesis by female-female pairs. In conclusion, the classical monogamous colony pattern of the host species suggests uneventful development of simple foundations dispersed in the environment, in accordance with the wide distribution of their resources. Purpose of Review: Head and neck cancers rank as the seventh most common cancer worldwide, nearly half of which result in death. The most common treatment methods for head and neck cancers include radiotherapy and surgery. Proton therapy has emerged in radiotherapy for cases where tumors are located near anatomically sensitive areas where the radiation dose must be strictly limited. The purpose of the work is to discuss the role of the proton therapy in the treatment in various types of cancer, and particularly head and neck tumors., Recent Findings: Proton therapy allows for the delivery of radiation doses to critical organs to be reduced, resulting in a decrease in the occurrence of late adverse effects on these organs. Since its identification as a marker for advanced melanoma in the 1980s, CD146 has been found to have multiple functions in both physiological and pathological processes, including embryonic development, tissue repair and regeneration, tumor progression, fibrosis disease, and inflammations. Subsequent research has revealed that CD146 is involved in various signaling pathways as a receptor or co-receptor in these processes. This correlation between CD146 and multiple diseases has sparked interest in its potential applications in diagnosis, prognosis, and targeted therapy. To better comprehend the versatile roles of CD146, we have summarized its research history and synthesized findings from numerous reports, proposing that cell plasticity serves as the underlying mechanism through which CD146 contributes to development, regeneration, and various diseases. Targeting CD146 would consequently halt cell state shifting during the onset and progression of these related diseases. Background: The optimal approach for the safe implementation and education of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) remains unclear. Prolonged operation time may cause surgeon fatigue and result in perioperative complications. To solve this issue, our department adopted task division by the console surgeon turnover between resection and reconstruction in 2022., Methods: This study retrospectively investigated consecutive patients who underwent RPD from November 2009 (initial introduction of RPD) to December 2023. The analysis excluded patients who underwent concomitant resection of other organs. The cases performed by a single console surgeon (single approach) were compared with those performed by two or more console surgeons (multiple approach)., Results: This study analyzed 85 consecutive RPD cases, including 51 with the single approach and 34 with the multiple approach. The operation time was significantly shorter (832 vs. 618 min, p < 0.001), and the postoperative major complication was less frequent (45% vs. 12%, p = 0.003) in the multiple approach group, although less experienced surgeons performed the multiple approach (number of RPD experiences: 19 cases vs. 5 cases, p < 0.001). The console surgeon turnover between the resection and reconstruction resulted in a safe pancreatojejunostomy performed by the less experienced surgeon (number of pancreatic reconstruction experiences: 6.5 vs. 14 cases, p = 0.010). Surgeons who started RPD with a multiple approach observed a reduction in surgical time and a lower incidence of complications earlier than those who started with a single approach., Conclusion: Task division during the early introduction phase of RPD using the multiple approach demonstrated potential contributions to improved surgical outcomes and enhanced educational benefits., (© 2024. Motilin (MLN) is a peptide hormone originally isolated from the mucosa of the porcine intestine. Its orthologs have been identified in various vertebrates. Although MLN regulates gastrointestinal motility in tetrapods from amphibians to mammals, recent studies indicate that MLN is not involved in the regulation of isolated intestinal motility in zebrafish, at least in vitro. To determine the unknown function of MLN in teleosts, we examined the expression of MLN and the MLN receptor (MLNR) at the cellular level in Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes). Quantitative PCR revealed that mln mRNA was limitedly expressed in the gut, whereas mlnr mRNA was not detected in the gut but was expressed in the brain and kidney. By in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, mlnr mRNA was detected in the dopaminergic neurons of the area postrema in the brain and the noradrenaline-producing cells in the interrenal gland of the kidney. Furthermore, we observed efferent projections of mlnr-expressing dopaminergic neurons in the lobus vagi (XL) and nucleus motorius nervi vagi (NXm) of the medulla oblongata by establishing a transgenic medaka expressing the enhanced green fluorescence protein driven by the mlnr promoter. The expression of dopamine receptor mRNAs in the XL and cholinergic neurons in NXm was confirmed by in situ hybridization. These results indicate novel sites of MLN activity other than the gastrointestinal tract. Herein, we demonstrate an efficient method for multi-deuterium labelling of pirtobrutinib-a Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor recently approved by the FDA-using a straightforward hydrogen isotope exchange (HIE) reaction. A remarkably high level of deuterium incorporation was achieved using an excess of a Kerr-type iridium catalyst. The key factor in the significant deuterium labelling was the decision to employ a deuterium uniformly labelled solvent, chlorobenzene-d 5 , at an elevated temperature. Virtually, no d 0 -d 3 species were detected, with only traces of d 4 -d 5 isotopomers (< 5%) observable in the mass spectrum of pirtobrutinib-d 8 , fulfilling requirements for stable isotope-labelled internal standard. The labelled compound-mainly consisting of isotopomers d 6 -d 9 at 82.4% of the total abundance-was isolated in a high yield (73%) and purity (99%). Noteworthy, fluorine group acting as a directing group was observed for the first time. Significant incorporation of deuterium in ortho-positions, exceeding 87%, was observed. Interestingly, chlorinated solvent used in the HIE reactions was non-specifically deuterated yielding up to 0.42 deuterium per chlorobenzene molecule even at an exceptionally low iridium catalyst loading of 4.17 × 10 -2  mol%., (© 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Purpose: To evaluate the safety, efficacy and predictors of response of transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) to treat hepatic hemangiomas (HHs)., Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted of consecutive HH patients who received TAE with bleomycin-Lipiodol emulsion and gelatin sponge particles at three institutions from January 2014 to January 2021. TAE effectiveness was defined as more than 50% reduction of tumor volume. The effectiveness, safety, and CT changes of hemangiomas after TAE were assessed. Factors affecting TAE efficacy on tumor size were analyzed with logistic regression analysis., Results: A total of 102 patients with 109 HHs were included. After treatment, both the tumor diameter and volume were significantly reduced from 8.5 ± 3.9 to 5.9 ± 3.8 cm (P < 0.001) and 412.6 ± 742.3 cm 3 to 102.0 ± 232.7 cm 3 (P < 0.001), respectively. TAE effectiveness was achieved in 80.7% (88/109) of hemangiomas, which was characterized by progressive reduction in tumor volume over time with Lipiodol retention. Atypical enhancement pattern (tiny enhancing dots in the hepatic arterial and portal venous phase) (p = 0.001) and central arterioportal shunt (APS) (p = 0.002) associated with the tumor were independent predictors of TAE ineffectiveness. Postembolization syndrome and transient increase in liver enzymes were common without severe complications and death., Conclusion: TAE was safe and effective in reducing HH size. There is a growing body of evidence on the effects of subjective aging on health, well-being and quality of life. This review aims to synthesize findings about the link between subjective aging and cognition and cognitive decline. Furthermore, it provides an examination of variation sources such as subjective aging construct, cognitive domains, measures employed, age and moderator variables. A systematic search was performed in PubMed, PsychInfo and Web of Science, as well as grey literature searches in Google Scholar, OpenGrey, WorldCat and NDLTD, which resulted in 59 reports being included. Subjective aging is a relevant construct in the explanation and prediction of cognitive aging and cognitive decline in elderly adults. More positive views about own aging and self-perceptions of aging, as well as a younger subjective age, were consistently related to better cognition and lower risk of cognitive decline. However, there were differences due to subjective aging subdimensions and cognitive domains, as well as an effect of age. Additionally, there were concerns about the content validity of some measures employed, such as the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Morale Scale for subjective aging and the Mini Mental State Examination for global cognition. Vermicompost tea (VCT) is the effluent or leachate with a honeybrown colour collected during vermicomposting, an ecologically significant process essential to today's organic and regenerative agriculture. Dried earthworm, a.k.a. dilong (DL, meaning "earth dragon") in traditional Chinese herbal medicine, has long been used as a key component to treat diverse skin diseases, including eczema. In the present study, we hypothesized that VCT might have a positive influence on eczema therapy. It was found that the oral application of 50% VCT in mouse model reduced the ear allergic scores and alleviated the histological changes caused by eczema. Furthermore, the levels of Th2-associated and pro-inflammatory cytokines (namely IL-4 and IL-13 in serum) and IgE (in serum and ear tissues) were significantly reduced by VCT. Therefore, oral administration of 50% VCT exerts immunomodulatory effects on the development of eczema, suggesting its potential as a nutraceutical candidate for eczema treatment. Inborn errors of immunity (IEI) are multifaced diseases which can present with a variety of phenotypes, ranging from infections to autoimmunity, lymphoproliferation, and neoplasms. In recent decades, research has investigated the relationship between autoimmunity and IEI. Autoimmunity is more prevalent in primary humoral immunodeficiencies than in most other IEI and it can even be their first manifestation. Among these, the two most common primary immunodeficiencies are selective IgA deficiency and common variable immunodeficiency. More than half of the patients with these conditions develop non-infectious complications due to immune dysregulation: autoimmune, autoinflammatory, allergic disorders, and malignancies. Around 30% of these patients present with autoimmune phenomena, such as cytopenia, gastrointestinal and respiratory complications, and endocrine and dermatologic features. Complex alterations of the central and peripheral mechanisms of tolerance are involved, affecting mainly B lymphocytes but also T cells and cytokines. Not only the immunophenotype but also advances in genetics allow us to diagnose monogenic variants of these diseases and to investigate the pathogenetic basis of the immune dysregulation. The diagnosis and therapy of the primary humoral immunodeficiencies has been mostly focused on the infectious complications, while patients with predominant features of immune dysregulation and autoimmunity still present a challenge for the clinician and an opportunity for pathogenetic and therapeutic research. Leeches are well-known annelids due to their obligate blood-feeding habits. Some leech species secrete various biologically active substances which have important medical and pharmaceutical value in antithrombotic treatments. In this study, we provided a high-quality genome of the Asian buffalo leech (Hirudinaria manillensis), based on which we performed a systematic identification of potential antithrombotic genes and their corresponding proteins. Combining automatic and manual prediction, we identified 21 antithrombotic gene families including fourteen coagulation inhibitors, three platelet aggregation inhibitors, three fibrinolysis enhancers, and one tissue penetration enhancer. A total of 72 antithrombotic genes, including two pseudogenes, were identified, including most of their corresponding proteins forming three or more disulfide bonds. Three protein families (LDTI, antistasin, and granulin) had internal tandem repeats containing 6, 10, and 12 conserved cysteines, respectively. We also measured the anticoagulant activities of the five identified hirudins (hirudin_Hman1 ~ hirudin_Hman5). The results showed that three (hirudin_Hman1, hirudin_Hman2, and hirudin_Hman5), but not the remaining two, exhibited anticoagulant activities. Our study provides the most comprehensive collection of antithrombotic biomacromolecules from a leech to date. The purpose of this study was to identify factors associated with the prognosis after docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (DCF) neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in patients with advanced esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) undergoing surgical resection. We retrospectively examined a total of 100 patients who received neoadjuvant DCF therapy for ESCC at our institution between 2011 and 2020. The psoas muscle index (PMI) was calculated from the psoas muscle area at the L3 vertebral level, and the intramuscular adipose tissue content (IMAC) was calculated from the mean CT value of the multifidus muscle and from four points of subcutaneous fat. The median PMI value was 6.11 cm2/m2 (range, 3.12–11.07 cm2/m2) in men and 3.65 cm2/m2 (range, 2.70–6.82 cm2/m2) in women. The median IMAC was −0.426 (range, −0.079–−0.968) in men and −0.359 (range, −0.079–−0.671) in women. Based on the PMI, IMAC, and other patient factors, factors associated with NAC-DCF postoperative survival were identified using multivariate Cox regression analysis. A high IMAC was significantly related to overall survival after surgery (p = 0.005, hazard ratio 2.699). A comparison of Kaplan–Meier curves showed that the 5-year survival rate was 76.5% in the low IMAC group and 42.7% in the high IMAC group (log-rank test; p = 0.001). A low IMAC was associated with good survival outcomes and was an independent prognostic factor in patients with cStage II/III ESCC who were treated with the NAC-DCF regimen and underwent surgical resection. The unique benefits of Fabry–Pérot resonators as frequency-stable reference cavities and as an efficient interface between atoms and photons make them an indispensable resource for emerging photonic technologies. To bring these performance benefits to next-generation communications, computation, and time-keeping systems, it will be necessary to develop strategies to integrate compact Fabry–Pérot resonators with photonic integrated circuits. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel reflection cancellation circuit that utilizes a numerically optimized multi-port polarization-splitting grating coupler to efficiently interface high-finesse Fabry–Pérot resonators with a silicon photonic circuit. This circuit interface produces a spatial separation of the incident and reflected waves, as required for on-chip Pound–Drever–Hall frequency locking, while also suppressing unwanted back reflections from the Fabry–Pérot resonator. Using inverse design principles, we design and fabricate a polarization-splitting grating coupler that achieves 55% coupling efficiency. This design realizes an insertion loss of 5.8 dB for the circuit interface and more than 9 dB of back reflection suppression, and we demonstrate the versatility of this system by using it to interface several reflective off-chip devices. A previously developed fibrin‐agarose skin model—UGRSKIN—showed promising clinical results in severely burnt patients. To determine the histological parameters associated to the biocompatibility and therapeutic effects of this model, we carried out a comprehensive structural and ultrastructural study of UGRSKIN grafted in severely burnt patients after 3 months of follow‐up. The grafted epidermis was analogue to native human skin from day 30th onward, revealing well‐structured strata with well‐differentiated keratinocytes expressing CK5, CK8, CK10, claudin, plakoglobin, filaggrin, and involucrin in a similar way to controls, suggesting that the epidermis was able to mature and differentiate very early. Melanocytes and Langerhans cells were found from day 30th onward, together with a basement membrane, abundant hemidesmosomes and lack of rete ridges. At the dermal layer, we found an interface between the grafted skin and the host tissue at day 30th, which tended to disappear with time. The grafted superficial dermis showed a progressive increase in properly‐oriented collagen fibers, elastic fibers and proteoglycans, including decorin, similarly to control dermis at day 60‐90th of in vivo follow‐up. Blood vessels determined by CD31 and SMA expression were more abundant in grafted skin than controls, whereas lymphatic vessels were more abundant at day 90th. These results contribute to shed light on the histological parameters associated to biocompatibility and therapeutic effect of the UGRSKIN model grafted in patients and demonstrate that the bioengineered skin grafted in patients is able to mature and differentiate very early at the epithelial level and after 60–90 days at the dermal level. The milling profiles of single-crystal gallium nitride (GaN) when subjected to focused ion beams (FIBs) using gallium (Ga), xenon (Xe), and helium (He) ion sources were investigated. An experimental analysis via annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (ADF-STEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed that Ga-FIB milling yields trenches with higher aspect ratios compared to Xe-FIB milling for the selected ion beam parameters (30 kV, 42 pA), while He-FIB induces local lattice disorder. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to investigate the milling process, confirming that probe size critically influences trench aspect ratios. Interestingly, the MD simulations also showed that Xe-FIB generates higher aspect ratios than Ga-FIB with the same probe size, indicating that Xe-FIB could also be an effective option for nanoscale patterning. Atomic defects such as vacancies and interstitials in GaN from He-FIB milling were suggested by the MD simulations, supporting the lattice disorder observed via HRTEM. This combined experimental and simulation approach has enhanced our understanding of FIB milling dynamics and will benefit the fabrication of nanostructures via the FIB technique. Wafer bonding is a highly effective technique for integrating dissimilar semiconductor materials while suppressing the generation of crystalline defects that commonly occur during heteroepitaxial growth. This method is successfully applied to produce efficient solar cells, making it an important area of research for photovoltaic devices. In this article, a comprehensive review of semiconductor wafer‐bonding technologies is provided, focusing on their applications in solar cells. Beginning with an explanation of the thermodynamics of wafer bonding relative to heteroepitaxy, the functionalities and advantages of semiconductor wafer bonding are discussed. An overview of the history and recent developments in high‐efficiency multijunction solar cells using wafer bonding is also provided. Bonded solar cells made of various semiconductor materials are reviewed and various types of wafer‐bonding methods, including direct bonding and interlayer‐mediated bonding, are described. Background: Although nurses are expected to address the social determinants of health (SDH) in clinical settings, the perspectives of front‐line nurses on the integration of SDH into their clinical practice remain unclear. Understanding the dynamism of this integration and its outcomes can yield crucial insights into effective nursing care. This study aims to elucidate the integration and adoption of tool‐based SDH assessment nursing programs and their impacts on daily nursing care. Methods: We conducted qualitative research at a small community‐based hospital in Japan, where a tool‐based program characterized by social background interviews and documentation was implemented. Nurses at the hospital were recruited via purposive and snowball sampling. After hypothesis generation, semi‐constructed in‐depth online interviews were conducted. Each interview lasted between 30 and 50 min. The data were analyzed via thematic analysis using the framework approach. Results: A total of 16 nurses participated. Participants' incorporation of the novel SDH assessment program was bolstered by prior learning and their recognition of its practical value. Institutional support and collaborative teamwork further facilitated the adoption of this innovation. Enhanced knowledge about the social contexts of their patients contributed to increased respect, empathy, and self‐affirmation among participants, consequently enhancing the quality of nursing care. Conclusion: Through team‐based learning, reflection, and support, nurses can integrate a tool‐based SDH assessment program into their daily nursing practice. This program has the potential to empower nurses to deliver more holistic care and redefine their professional identity. Further research is warranted to assess patient‐reported outcomes. Lupus nephritis (LN) is a common and severe manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus and an important cause of acute and chronic kidney injury. Early diagnosis of LN and preventing relapses are key to preserving renal reserve. However, due to the complexity and heterogeneity of the disease, clinical management remains challenging. Kidney biopsy remains the gold standard for confirming the diagnosis of LN and subsequent assessment of kidney histopathology, but it is invasive and cannot be repeated frequently. Current clinical indicators of kidney function such as proteinuria and serum creatinine level are non-specific and do not accurately reflect histopathological changes, while anti-dsDNA antibody and C3 levels reflect immunological status but not kidney injury. Identification of novel and specific biomarkers for LN is prerequisite to improve management. Renal function deterioration is associated with changes in the endothelial glycocalyx, a delicate gel-like layer located at the interface between the endothelium and bloodstream. Inflammation induces endothelial cell activation and shedding of glycocalyx constituents into the circulation. This review discusses the potential role of soluble glycocalyx components as biomarkers of active LN, especially in patients in whom conventional serological and biochemical markers do not appear helpful. Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a natural macromolecule polysaccharide that is extensively distributed in a wide variety of organisms. CS is of great interest to researchers due to its many in vitro and in vivo functions. CS production derives from a diverse number of sources, including but not limited to extraction from various animals or fish, bio-synthesis, and fermentation, and its purity and homogeneity can vary greatly. The structural diversity of CS with respect to sulfation and saccharide content endows this molecule with distinct complexity, allowing for functional modification. These multiple functions contribute to the application of CS in medicines, biomaterials, and functional foods. In this article, we discuss the preparation of CS from different sources, the structure of various forms of CS, and its binding to other relevant molecules. Moreover, for the creation of this article, the functions and applications of CS were reviewed, with an emphasis on drug discovery, hydrogel formation, delivery systems, and food supplements. We conclude that analyzing some perspectives on structural modifications and preparation methods could potentially influence future applications of CS in medical and biomaterial research.
