This study seeks to examine the relationship between career adaptability (concern, control, curiosity, and confidence) and attrition intention among hospitality employees through the attitudinal and emotional mediation of career satisfaction and anxiety, respectively. Based on career construction theory, the results reveal that career satisfaction mediates the relationship between the career adaptability dimensions of concern, confidence, and curiosity to attrition intentions of hospitality employees as an attitudinal response, whereas career anxiety mediates the relationship between concern and control to attrition intentions as an emotional response. Lastly, the study also tests the moderating role of employee status and suggests that career adaptability serves as a psychological resource for full-time employees but not for part-time employees. The findings of this study provide important practical contributions to preserving the future workforce of the hospitality industry.

Background and ObjectivesThe outcome of status epilepticus (SE) largely varies depending on clinical characteristics. Risk stratification is necessary for tailoring the aggressiveness of treatment and predicting outcomes of individual patients with SE. In this study, we assessed differences in mortality, neurologic disability, and prognostic factors associated with SE across sociodemographic and clinical characteristics.MethodsWe conducted a nationwide population-based retrospective cohort study using the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) database linked with the national death and disability registries. SE was identified from admission or emergency department visits using a diagnostic code of G41 from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision. Individuals with new-onset SE that occurred from January 1, 2010, to December 31, 2018, were included. Active epilepsy, refractoriness of SE, potential etiology, and comorbidities were ascertained by diagnostic codes and/or prescription records from the NHIS database as potential prognostic factors. Outcomes included 30-day and 1-year mortality and neurologic disabilities after SE. Prognostic factors for mortality were assessed by the Cox regression hazard model. We performed a subgroup analysis according to age: pediatric SE (age ResultsA total of 33,814 patients with new-onset SE were included (6,818 children/adolescents and 26,996 adults). The 30-day mortality was 8.5% (1.8% in pediatric SE and 10.2% in adult SE), and the 1-year mortality was 25.1% (4.6% in pediatric SE and 30.3% in adult SE). Overall, 10.7% of patients newly acquired neurologic disabilities after SE, with the highest incidence in children aged 5–9 years (21.3%). Intractable epilepsy developed in 0.8% of entire SE. Old age, presence of acute etiology, and refractoriness were poor prognostic factors for mortality in both pediatric and adult SE. Male sex, low economic status, no active epilepsy, and comorbidities were additional factors for a poor prognosis in adults.DiscussionNew-onset SE was associated with substantial mortality and disability. Although SE-related mortality was higher in adults, disabilities developed more commonly in children and adolescents. The major determinants of mortality differed between pediatric and adult SE.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to systematically review and synthesize identity research in the hospitality management literature. A critical revision of identity research in hospitality organizations, built on major identity constructs in the general management literature, is conducted to create thematic frameworks. This framework yields theoretical and practical future hospitality research agendas. Design/methodology/approach The current study adopted a systematic literature review approach to analyze and synthesize identity research in hospitality organizations. A total of 55 articles published since 2000 are included in this review. Findings Stemming from general management conceptualizations, identity research in hospitality organizations are categorized into four overarching themes. This review also points to research gaps in epistemological conceptualizations, definitional frameworks and methodology. Originality/value The study reviews identity research in hospitality organizations, builds an integrative thematic framework of identity research in hospitality and proposes directions for future research.

Purpose This study aims to provide important insights in advancing the hospitality workforce by exploring the dimensions of calling. By identifying significant calling dimensions among hospitality employees, the study is guided by work as calling theory by also examining the mediating role of employees’ professional identity on intention to leave the industry. Design/methodology/approach This study used an exploratory mixed-methods approach. Study 1 included an online qualitative survey to explore the significant dimensions of calling among hospitality employees. Study 2 measured the significance of hospitality calling dimensions on intention to leave the industry, mediated by professional identity. Findings Study 1 identified transcendent summons, passion and purposeful life as significant dimensions of hospitality calling. Study 2 examined calling as a second-order construct with the aforementioned dimensions and proposed calling increases professional identity and decreases intention to leave the industry. However, professional identity did not significantly influence the intention to leave the industry. Originality/value This study brings value to the calling literature by exploring the calling dimensions unique to the hospitality workforce. Findings also highlight that subjective professional identity alone cannot lower employees’ intention to leave the industry. Organizational and industry support focusing on transcendent summons, passion and purposeful life are recommended.
