The questions of the study focus on the level of psychological empowerment and work engagement of university faculty members and the correlation between psychological empowerment and work engagement.Materials and methods: Data were collected from a sample of 162 faculty members working at a China university. They were asked to complete two self-reported scales with good reliability and validity: the psychological empowerment scale (PES) and the Utrecht work engagement scale (UWES). The responses from the sample were analyzed using SPSS software. The descriptive statistics showed the participants’ statistical characteristics, while independent samplet-tests and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed group differences among university faculty members. Correlation analysis and multidimensional regression analysis demonstrated how psychological empowerment affected work engagement.Results: The total scores for the PES and UWES were both moderately high. Gender, age, degree attained, and professional ranking were associated with differences in levels of psychological empowerment and work engagement. The results confirmed that psychological empowerment was positively correlated with all the dimensions of work engagement. The regression analysis results showed that the positive role of psychological empowerment in work engagement was mainly realized through two dimensions: meaning and competence.Conclusion: The study results revealed significant group differences in the PES and UWES scores among university faculty members. Universities should give more support to younger and junior faculty. There is highly positive correlation between psychological empowerment and work engagement. University should recognize the role of psychological empowerment and create a supportive environment to promote faculty members’ professional development, which, in turn, can increase universities’ productivity.Keywords: psychological empowerment, work engagement, faculty members, case study

162. Characterization of Anthropogenic Influence and Levels of Antibiotic Resistance Gene, erm(F), in Soil at 26 Public Parks in Four Cities and Two Pristine Sites in California

Abstract

The goal of this study was to characterize the soil constitution and the presence of antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) erm(F) in soils across California to investigate the relationship between the levels of anthropogenic influence and ARG erm(F) levels locally and regionally. Soil samples were collected from 26 parks in four cities, San Diego, Los Angeles, Bakersfield, Fresno, where six publicly accessible parks sites were selected in each, and two pristine sites, Yosemite National Park and Mount Baldy. DNA was extracted, normalized, and tested for the presence and quantity of genes 16S rRNA and erm(F) using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Erm(F) quantities were determined via two analysis approaches—on a per gram of soil basis, and relative to 16S gene abundance. Locally among 26 parks, the five quantifiably detected erm(F) sites all occurred in high-level anthropogenic influenced sites. Regionally among four cities, urban and agricultural cities shared the similar soil constitution respectively and urban cities had higher erm(F) gene levels than agricultural ones. Population and population density in each city is positively correlated with erm(F) gene levels whichever analysis approach was applied.

Abstract

Objective To develop a short-term renal outcome prediction model for acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with LN. Methods Two lupus AKI cohorts from two independent centres during 2013–2019 were included: a derivation cohort from a rheumatology centre and a validation cohort from a nephrology centre. Clinical characteristics and renal histologic features were obtained. The outcome measurement was the recovery of kidney function within 12 months. Lasso regression was used for feature selection. Prediction models with or without pathology were built and a nomogram was plotted. Model evaluation including calibration curve and decision curve analysis was performed. Results A total of 130 patients were included in the derivation cohort and 96 patients in the validation cohort, of which 82 and 73 patients received a renal biopsy, respectively. The prognostic nomogram model without pathology included determinants of SLE duration, days from AKI onset to treatment and baseline creatinine level [C-index 0.85 (95% CI 0.78, 0.91) and 0.79 (95% CI 0.70, 0.88) for the two cohorts]. A combination of histologic tubulointerstitial (TI) fibrosis in the nomogram gave an incremental predictive performance (C-index 0.93 vs 0.85; P  = 0.039) in the derivation cohort but failed to improve the performance in the validation cohort (C-index 0.81 vs 0.79; P  = 0.78). Decision curve analysis suggested clinical benefit of the prediction models. Conclusion The predictive nomogram models might facilitate more accurate management for lupus patients with AKI. Abstract

Breast cancer treatment has been challenging all the time because cancer cells have multiple signaling pathways; so, breast cancer still remains a threat to the lives and health of many patients. While common single drug therapies inhibit only one pathway, the combination of multiple mechanisms offers the potential to simultaneously suppress multiple targets and pathways to kill cancer cells more effectively. It is reported that autophagy caused by autophagy inducers and apoptosis caused by some chemotherapeutic drugs can promote ferroptosis to some extent; herein, we combined these three pathways and constructed a multifunctional dual-responsive release nanosystem of Rap@mFe3O4–DOX–HA that achieved the ferroptosis–autophagy–apoptosis synergistic effect for cancer treatment. Mesoporous Fe3O4(mFe3O4) was set as the carrier and can also release Fe ions for ferroptosis, the autophagy inducer rapamycin (Rap) was wrapped in the carrier to trigger autophagy, and the chemotherapeutic drug doxorubicin (DOX) was used as the apoptosis inducer. At the tumor site, the prepared Rap@mFe3O4–DOX–HA nanoparticles split and released DOX/Rap in response to H+/GSH. From in vivoand in vitrostudies, it was found that Rap@mFe3O4–DOX–HA nanoparticles effectively inhibited the migration of 4T1 cells, furthermore, they struck cancer cells through multiple pathways and greatly improved the anti-tumor effect. Therefore, the strategy of multi-mechanism combination achieved a therapeutic effect of 1 + 1 > 2.
