Search

We have searched for in-falling stellar streams on to the local Milky Way disc in the CORAVEL and RAVE surveys. The CORAVEL survey consists of local dwarf stars (Nordstrom et al. Geneva-Copenhagen survey) and local Famaey et al. giant stars. We select RAVE stars with radial velocities that are sensitive to the Galactic vertical space velocity (Galactic latitude b < -45 deg). Kuiper statistics have been employed to test the symmetry of the Galactic vertical velocity distribution functions in these samples for evidence of a net vertical flow that could be associated with a (tidal?) stream of stars with vertically coherent kinematics. In contrast to the `Field of Streams' found in the outer halo, we find that the local volumes of the solar neighbourhood sampled by the CORAVEL dwarfs (complete within ~3 x 10^-4 kpc^3), CORAVEL giants (complete within ~5 x 10^-2 kpc^3) and RAVE (5-15% complete within ~8 kpc^3) are devoid of any vertically coherent streams containing hundreds of stars. This is sufficiently sensitive to allow our RAVE sample to rule out the passing of the tidal stream of the disrupting Sagittarius (Sgr) dwarf galaxy through the solar neighbourhood. This agrees with the most recent determination of its orbit and dissociates it from the Helmi et al. halo stream. Our constraints on the absence of the Sgr stream near the Sun could prove a useful tool for discriminating between Galactic potential models. The lack of a net vertical flow through the solar neighbourhood in the CORAVEL giants and RAVE samples argues against the Virgo overdensity crossing the disc near the Sun. We examine the orbits of satellite galaxies identified in a suite of N-body/gasdynamical simulations of the formation of $L_*$ galaxies in a LCDM universe. Most satellites follow conventional orbits; after turning around, they accrete into their host halo and settle on orbits whose apocentric radii are steadily eroded by dynamical friction. However, a number of outliers are also present, we find that ~1/3 of satellites identified at $z=0$ are on unorthodox orbits, with apocenters that exceed their turnaround radii. This population of satellites on extreme orbits consists typically of the faint member of a satellite pair that has been ejected onto a highly-energetic orbit during its first approach to the primary. Since the concurrent accretion of multiple satellite systems is a defining feature of hierarchical models of galaxy formation, we speculate that this three-body ejection mechanism may be the origin of (i) some of the newly discovered high-speed satellites around M31 (such as Andromeda XIV); (ii) some of the distant fast-receding Local Group members, such as Leo I; and (iii) the oddly isolated dwarf spheroidals Cetus and Tucana in the outskirts of the Local Group. We study the population of satellite galaxies formed in a suite of N-body/gasdynamical simulations of galaxy formation in a LCDM universe. We find little spatial or kinematic bias between the dark matter and the satellite population. The velocity dispersion of the satellites is a good indicator of the virial velocity of the halo: \sigma_{sat}/V_{vir}=0.9 +/- 0.2. Applied to the Milky Way and M31 this gives V_{vir}^{MW}=109 +/- 22$ km/s and V_{vir}^{M31} = 138 +/- 35 km/s, respectively, substantially lower than the rotation speed of their disk components. The detailed kinematics of simulated satellites and dark matter are also in good agreement. By contrast, the stellar halo of the simulated galaxies is kinematically and spatially distinct from the population of surviving satellites. This is because the survival of a satellite depends on mass and on time of accretion; surviving satellites are biased toward low-mass systems that have been recently accreted by the galaxy. Our results support recent proposals for the origin of the systematic differences between stars in the Galactic halo and in Galactic satellites: the elusive ``building blocks'' of the Milky Way stellar halo were on average more massive, and were accreted (and disrupted) earlier than the population of dwarfs that has survived self-bound until the present., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, MNRAS in press. We report new constraints on the local escape speed of our Galaxy. Our analysis is based on a sample of high velocity stars from the RAVE survey and two previously published datasets. We use cosmological simulations of disk galaxy formation to motivate our assumptions on the shape of the velocity distribution, allowing for a significantly more precise measurement of the escape velocity compared to previous studies. We find that the escape velocity lies within the range $498\kms < \ve < 608 \kms$ (90 per cent confidence), with a median likelihood of $544\kms$. The fact that $\ve^2$ is significantly greater than $2\vc^2$ (where $\vc=220\kms$ is the local circular velocity) implies that there must be a significant amount of mass exterior to the Solar circle, i.e. this convincingly demonstrates the presence of a dark halo in the Galaxy. For a simple isothermal halo, one can calculate that the minimum radial extent is $\sim58$ kpc. We use our constraints on $\ve$ to determine the mass of the Milky Way halo for three halo profiles. For example, an adiabatically contracted NFW halo model results in a virial mass of $1.42^{+1.14}_{-0.54}\times10^{12}M_\odot$ and virial radius of $305^{+66}_{-45}$ kpc (90 per cent confidence). For this model the circular velocity at the virial radius is $142^{+31}_{-21}\kms$. We show by means of a high-resolution N-body simulation how the mass assembly histories of galaxy-size cold dark matter (CDM) halos depend on environment. Halos in high density environments form earlier and a higher fraction of their mass is assembled in major mergers, compared to low density environments. The distribution of the present-day specific mass aggregation rate is strongly dependent on environment. While in low density environments only ~20% of the halos are not accreting mass at the present epoch, this fraction rises to ~80% at high densities. At z=1 the median of the specific aggregation rate is ~4 times larger than at z=0 and almost independent on environment. All the dependences on environment found here are critically enhanced by local processes associated to subhalos because the fraction of subhalos increases as the environment gets denser. The distribution of the halo specific mass aggregation rate as well as its dependence on environment resemble the relations for the specific star formation rate distribution of galaxies. An analogue of the morphology-density relation is also present at the level of CDM halos, being driven by the halo major merging history. The Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) is a second-generation VLT panoramic integral-field spectrograph under preliminary design study. MUSE has a field of 1x1 arcmin**2 sampled at 0.2x0.2 arcsec**2 and is assisted by the VLT ground layer adaptive optics ESO facility using four laser guide stars. The simultaneous spectral range is 465-930 nm, at a resolution of R~3000. MUSE couples the discovery potential of a large imaging device to the measuring capabilities of a high-quality spectrograph, while taking advantage of the increased spatial resolution provided by adaptive optics. This makes MUSE a unique and tremendously powerful instrument for discovering and characterizing objects that lie beyond the reach of even the deepest imaging surveys. MUSE has also a high spatial resolution mode with 7.5x7.5 arcsec**2 field of view sampled at 25 milli-arcsec. In this mode MUSE should be able to obtain diffraction limited data-cubes in the 600-930 nm wavelength range. We present the first data release of the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE), an ambitious spectroscopic survey to measure radial velocities and stellar atmosphere parameters (temperature, metallicity, surface gravity) of up to one million stars using the 6dF multi-object spectrograph on the 1.2-m UK Schmidt Telescope of the Anglo-Australian Observatory (AAO). We search for signatures of past accretion events in the Milky Way in the recently published catalogue by Nordstrom et al.(2004), containing accurate spatial and kinematic information as well as metallicities for 13240 nearby stars. To optimize our strategy, we use numerical simulations to characterize the properties of the debris from disrupted satellites. We find that stars with a common progenitor should show distinct correlations between their orbital parameters; in particular, between the apocentre A and pericentre P, as well as their z-angular momentum (L_z). In the APL-space, such stars are expected to cluster around regions of roughly constant eccentricity. The APL space for the Nordstrom catalogue exhibits a wealth of substructure, much of which can be linked to dynamical perturbations induced by spiral arms and the Galactic bar. However, our analysis also reveals a statistically significant excess of stars on orbits of common (moderate) eccentricity, analogous to the pattern expected for merger debris. Besides being dynamically peculiar, the 274 stars in these substructures have very distinct metallicity and age distributions, providing further evidence of their extra-Galactic provenance. It is possible to identify among these stars, three coherent Groups with characteristic ages and metallicities, that, in all likelihood, correspond to the remains of disrupted satellites. We present a study of the lens properties of quadruply imaged systems, lensed by numerically simulated galaxies. We investigate a simulated elliptical and disc galaxy drawn from high resolution simulations of galaxy formation in a concordance $\Lambda$CDM universe. The simulations include the effects of gas dynamics, star formation and feedback processes. Flux-ratio anomalies observed in strong gravitational lensing potentially provide an indicator for the presence of mass substructure in lens galaxies as predicted from CDM simulations. We particularly concentrate on the prediction that, for an ideal cusp caustic, the sum of the signed magnifications of the three highly magnified images should vanish when the source approaches the cusp. Strong violation of this cusp relation indicates the presence of substructure, regardless of the global, smooth mass model of the lens galaxy. We draw the following conclusions: (1) the level of substructure present in simulations produces violations of the cusp relation comparable to those observed, (2) higher-order catastrophes (e.g. swallowtails) can also cause changes of the order of 0.6 in the cusp relation as predicted by a smooth model, (3) the flux anomaly distribution depends on the image parity and flux and both the brightest minimum and saddle-point images are more affected by substructure than the fainter images. In addition, the brightest saddle point is demagnified w.r.t. the brightest minimum. Our results are fully numerical and properly include all mass scales, without making semi-analytic assumptions. They are ultimately limited by the mass resolution of single particles in the simulation determined by current computational limits, however show that our results are not affected by shot-noise due to the finite number of particles., Comment: 14 pages,9 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A. Gravitationally lensed systems with multiply imaged quasars are an excellent tool for studying the properties of distant galaxies. In particular, they provide the most accurate mass measures for the lensing galaxy. The system B1422+231 is a well studied example of a quadruply imaged quasar, with high-quality VLBI data available. Very accurate data on image positions, fluxes and deconvolved image sizes provide good constraints for lensing models. We discuss here the failure of smooth models in fitting the data. Since it is intuitively clear that the mass of a lens galaxy is not a smooth entity, we have investigated how deviation from a smooth model can influence lensing phenomena, especially the image flux ratios. To explore expectations about the level of substructure in galaxies and its influence on strong lensing, N-body simulations of a model galaxy are employed. By using the mass distribution of this model galaxy as a lens, synthetic data sets of different four image system configurations are generated. We report first results from a series of N-body/gasdynamical simulations designed to study the origin of galaxy morphologies in a cold dark matter-dominated universe. The simulations include star formation and feedback and have numerical resolution sufficiently high to allow for a direct investigation of the morphology of simulated galaxies. We find, in agreement with previous theoretical work, that the presence of the main morphological components of galaxies--disks, spheroids, bars--is regulated by the mode of gas accretion and intimately linked to discrete accretion events. In the case we present, disks arise from the smooth deposition of cooled gas at the center of dark halos, spheroids result from the stirring of preexisting disks during mergers, and bars are triggered by tides generated by satellites. This demonstrates that morphology is a transient phenomenon within the lifetime of a galaxy and that the Hubble sequence reflects the varied accretion histories of galaxies in hierarchical formation scenarios. In particular, we demonstrate directly that disk/bulge systems can be built and rebuilt by the smooth accretion of gas onto the remnant of a major merger and that the present-day remnants of late dissipative mergers between disks are spheroidal stellar systems with structure resembling that of field ellipticals. In this work we investigate the gravitationally lensed system B1422+231. High--quality VLBI image positions, fluxes and shapes as well as an optical HST lens galaxy position are used. First, two simple and smooth models for the lens galaxy are applied to fit observed image positions and fluxes; no even remotely acceptable model was found. Such models also do not accurately reproduce the image shapes. In order to fit the data successfully, mass substructure has to be added to the lens, and its level is estimated. To explore expectations about the level of substructure in galaxies and its influence on strong lensing, N-body simulation results of a model galaxy are employed. By using the mass distribution of this model galaxy as a lens, synthetic data sets of different four image system configurations are generated and simple lens models are again applied to fit them. The difficulties in fitting these lens systems turn out to be similar to the case of some real gravitationally lensed systems, thus possibly providing evidence for the presence and strong influence of substructure in the primary lens galaxy., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We investigate the tilting and warping of galactic disks in response to tidal torquing. The strength of the torque is determined from cosmological N-body simulations. We find the tidal torques to be dominated by substructure in the galactic halo, such as dwarf satellites, and by a misalignment between the disk angular momentum and the figure axes of the dark matter halo. The radial dependence of the torque can approximated by a power law of index -2.5. A massless disk subjected to such a torque develops a trailing warp similar to those seen in a large number of disk galaxies, i.e. the inner regions of the disk tilt faster than the outer disk. In the case of massive disks, self gravity causes the inner disk to stay locally flat and only the outer regions show the signatures of warps. High-resolution N-body simulations are used to examine the power spectrum dependence of the concentration of galaxy-sized dark matter halos. It is found that dark halo concentrations depend on the amplitude of mass fluctuations as well as on the ratio of power between small and virial mass scales. This finding is consistent with the original results of Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW), and allows their model to be extended to include power spectra substantially different from Cold Dark Matter (CDM). In particular, the single-parameter model presented here fits the concentration dependence on halo mass for truncated power spectra, such as those expected in the warm dark matter scenario, and predicts a stronger redshift dependence for the concentration of CDM halos than proposed by NFW. The latter conclusion confirms recent suggestions by Bullock et al., although this new modeling differs from theirs in detail. These findings imply that observational limits on the concentration, such as those provided by estimates of the dark matter content within individual galaxies, may be used to constrain the amplitude of mass fluctuations on galactic and subgalactic scales. The constraints on $\Lambda$CDM models posed by the dark mass within the solar circle in the Milky Way and by the zero-point of the Tully-Fisher relation are revisited, with the result that neither dataset is clearly incompatible with the `concordance' ($\Omega_0=0.3$, $\Lambda_0=0.7$, $\sigma_8=0.9$) $\Lambda$CDM cosmogony. We have simulated the formation of an X-ray cluster in a cold dark matter universe using 12 different codes. The codes span the range of numerical techniques and implementations currently in use, including SPH and grid methods with fixed, deformable or multilevel meshes. The goal of this comparison is to assess the reliability of cosmological gas dynamical simulations of clusters in the simplest astrophysically relevant case, that in which the gas is assumed to be non-radiative. We compare images of the cluster at different epochs, global properties such as mass, temperature and X-ray luminosity, and radial profiles of various dynamical and thermodynamical quantities. On the whole, the agreement among the various simulations is gratifying although a number of discrepancies exist. Agreement is best for properties of the dark matter and worst for the total X-ray luminosity. Even in this case, simulations that adequately resolve the core radius of the gas distribution predict total X-ray luminosities that agree to within a factor of two. Other quantities are reproduced to much higher accuracy. For example, the temperature and gas mass fraction within the virial radius agree to about 10%, and the ratio of specific kinetic to thermal energies of the gas agree to about 5%. Various factors contribute to the spread in calculated cluster properties, including differences in the internal timing of the simulations. The formation of galaxy clusters in hierarchically clustering universes is investigated by means of high resolution N-body simulations. The simulations are performed using a newly developed multi-mass scheme which combines a PM code with a high resolution N-body code. Numerical effects due to time stepping and gravitational softening are investigated as well as the influence of the simulation box size and of the assumed boundary conditions. Special emphasis is laid on the formation process and the influence of various cosmological parameters. Cosmogonies with massive neutrinos are also considered. Differences between clusters in the same cosmological model seem to dominate over differences due differing background cosmogony. The cosmological model can alter the time evolution of cluster collapse, but the merging pattern remains fairly similar, e.g. number of mergers and mass ratio of mergers. The gross properties of a halo, such as its size and total angular momentum, also evolve in a similar manner for all cosmogonies and can be described using analytical models. It is shown that the density distribution of a halo shows a characteristic radial dependence which follows a power law with a slope of $\alpha=-1$ at small and $\alpha=-3$ at large radii, independent of the background cosmogony or the considered redshift. The shape of the density profiles follows the generic form proposed by Navarro et al. (1996) for all hierarchically clustering scenarios and retains very little information about the formation process or the cosmological model. Only the central matter concentration of a halo is correlated to the formation time and therefore to the corresponding cosmogony.
