O artigo avalia o nível tecnológico dos sistemas de produção de bovinos na Amazônia Brasileira. A partir dos dados oficiais do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE), foram calculados 15 indicadores de adoção de tecnologias para cada um dos municípios da Amazônia Brasileira, submetidos à análise fatorial por componentes principais para estimação do índice tecnológico da pecuária bovina. Foram extraídos cinco fatores denominados de Pecuária tradicional; Manejo de pastagens; Pecuária integrada; Tecnologias de reprodução e Qualidade do leite. A hierarquia dos fatores evidencia que a adoção de tecnologias tradicionais relacionadas ao uso extensivo de pastagens, suplementação com sal mineral e o cumprimento de vacinações obrigatórias predominam frente às tecnologias inovadoras que compõem os outros quatro fatores e cuja adoção ainda é incipiente entre os pecuaristas regionais. Constatou-se que 54,48% dos municípios possuem uma pecuária bovina com baixo nível tecnológico e apenas 9,34% níveis tecnológicos mais elevados. O estado de Mato Grosso possui o maior número de municípios com pecuária bovina de maior nível tecnológico, seguido por Rondônia, Tocantins e o estado do Pará.

Immunomagnetic sorting, sequential filtrations, and counterflow centrifugal elutriation were compared for their ability to obtain enriched populations of Pneumocystis carinii developmental stages from infected rat-lung homogenates. Elutriation combined with sequential filtrations resulted in highly (>95%) enriched populations of P. carinii cysts and trophozoites with excellent viability. This approach offers advantages over previously described methods of obtaining enriched P. carinii cell populations and should have important applications to research on this organism. This study aimed to assess the potential use of increasing levels of murumuru cake Astrocaryum murumuru var. murumuru, M art.) (MC) in sheep diets as a replacement for Mombasa grass (Panicum maximum Jacq). Metabolic tests were performed with 20 castrated male sheep at Embrapa Amazônia Oriental, Belém, Pará, during 26 days. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design, with five diets and four replications. MC0: 100% grass; MC10: 10% MC and 90% grass; MC20: 20% MC and 80% grass; MC40: 40% MC and 60% grass; and MC60: 60% MC and 40% grass. The intake and the coefficient of apparent digestibility of dry matter (DMI and CDDM), organic matter (OMI and CDOM), crude protein (CPI and CDCP), neutral detergent fiber (NDFI and CDNDF), acid detergent fiber (ADFI and CDADF), ether extract (EEI and CDEE), cellulose (CELI and CDCEL), hemicellulose (HEMI and CDHEM), and nitrogen balance (NB) of experimental diets were determined. The intake of mineral material (MMI) and lignin (LIGI) were also determined. The DMI, OMI, MMI, CPI, NDFI, and ADFI displayed a decreasing linear effect with the replacement of Mombasa grass by MC in the diet. The EEI and the LIGI presented quadratic effects according to the replacement levels of MC in the diet. The CDDM, CDOM, and CDHEM displayed increasing linear effects, between MC0 and MC60. The CDEE, CDNDF, CDADF, and CDCEL displayed a quadratic effect, with optimum replacement levels of 56.65%, 41%, 31.33%, and 27.46%, respectively. The nitrogen balance presented a negative linear effect in the range of 0% to 60% of murumuru cake. One can conclude that murumuru cake is an alternative to the dietary supplementation of ruminants in replacing the Mombasa grass because it provides an increase in the digestibility of nutrients for sheep. However, a limited replacement level must be implemented, considering that from 27.46%, 31.33%, 41%, and 56.65% replacement, a decline occurs in the CDCEL, CDADF, CDNDF, and CDEE, respectively, although a negative nitrogen balance does not occur.

Twenty neutered male sheep were subjected to 26 days of a metabolic assay at Embrapa Eastern Amazon in Belém, PA, Brazil (01°26’02”S and 48°26’21”W; altitude 8 m). The trial followed a completely randomized design, with five treatments and four repetitions. Treatment A (control) consisted of a diet containing 100% grass. The diet in treatment B contained 10% CM and 90% grass; that in treatment C contained 20% CM and 80% grass; that in treatment D contained 40% CM and 60% grass; and that in treatment E contained 60% CM and 40% grass. Intake of experimental diet and apparent digestibility coefficient of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), ethereal extract (EE), cellulose (CEL), hemicellulose (HEM), and nitrogen balance (NB) were assessed. Results showed that the level of CM replacement significantly affected intake of mineral matter (IMM), crude protein (ICP), ethereal extract (IEE), and cellulose (ICEL), with the highest (P < 0.05) values of IMM, ICP, and IEE being observed for feed in which 60% of grass was replaced by CM, indicating that the acceptance of the experimental diet was good. ICEL decreased as levels of CM replacement increased. At 40% replacement, the apparent DM digestibility coefficient was the lowest (41.54%) and did not statistically differ from diets with 60% (45.74%) and 20% (54.19%) CM replacement. The lowest values for the apparent digestibility coefficients of OM, CP, NDF, and ADF were observed when grass was replaced with 40% and 60% CM. For diets with up to 20% replacement of Mombaça grass by CM, the apparent digestibility coefficients of DM, OM, NDF, and ADF were the highest and did not significantly differ from those of the control treatment. Nitrogen excretion in feces differed significantly; the lowest values were found with 0%, 10%, and 20% CM replacement. Use of CM represents an alternative method of dietary supplementation for ruminants and is a good source of protein and energy, since replacing Mombaça grass with increasing levels of CM led to an increase in the voluntary feed intake by ovines.

A proposta deste artigo foi apresentar uma síntese da inflação brasileira durante o período que compreendeu o final do II Plano Nacional de Desenvolvimento (II PND) e o Plano Real, buscando definir seus principais aspectos e influências na economia brasileira. Dessa forma, procurou-se descrever o panorama econômico presente na década de 1980 – que passou a história como a “década perdida” – e na primeira metade dos anos 1990, períodos de predominância da inflação inercial no Brasil. Para tanto, efetuou-se uma breve revisão da bibliografia existente sobre o tema. Com base nesse arcabouço teórico, buscou-se definir qual a dimensão que a inflação inercial atingiu no maior país da América do Sul, no tocante às suas consequências, bem como as tentativas de extingui-la.

In this study, we evaluated the antifibrotic activity of SNAC in an animal model of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) induced in Sprague-Dawley rats fed with a choline-deficient, high trans fat diet and exposed to diethylnitrosamine for 8 weeks. The rats were divided into three groups: SNAC, which received oral SNAC solution daily; NASH, which received the vehicle; and control, which received standard diet and vehicle. Genes related to fibrosis (matrix metalloproteinases [MMP]-13, -9, and -2), transforming growth factor ß-1 [TGFß-1], collagen-1a, and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase [TIMP-1 and -2] and oxidative stress (heat-shock proteins [HSP]-60 and -90) were evaluated. SNAC led to a 34.4% reduction in the collagen occupied area associated with upregulation of MMP-13 and -9 and downregulation of HSP-60, TIMP-2, TGFß-1, and collagen-1α. These results indicate that oral SNAC administration may represent a potential antifibrotic treatment for NASH. O objetivo do estudo foi conhecer a prevalência sorológica de Toxoplasma gondii em búfalos (Bubalus bubalis) do Estado do Pará, Brasil. Foram selecionados randomicamente 319 bubalinos distribuídos em sete municípios da Ilha do Marajó. Para efeito comparativo também foram avaliados 128 bubalinos pertencentes a cinco municípios do Estado do Pará. A prevalência sorológica de Toxoplasma gondii foi avaliada pelo Ensaio de Imunoadsorção Enzimático Indireto (iELISA). As amostras diagnósticadas como positivas no iELISA foram submetidas a Reação de Imunofluorescência Indireta (RIFI). Foram avaliados os fatores de risco: localidade, raça, gestação, co-infecção por Brucella abortus e co-infecção por Mycobacterium bovis. Nove casos de encefalomielite equina foram estudados na Ilha de Marajó, estado do Pará, Brasil. Os equinos apresentavam dificuldade em se manter em estação, andavam em círculo, tinham acentuada depressão, pálpebras cerradas, paralisia da língua, tremores musculares, bruxismo, anorexia e desidratação. Alguns apresentavam diminuição dos reflexos auricular, palpebral, de ameaça, diminuição do tônus da língua e taquicardia. Posição de auto-auscultação foi observada com frequência. Os animais muitas vezes eram encontrados apoiados em troncos e cercas para se manterem em estação. À necropsia verificou-se hemorragia das leptomeninges e da medula, alguns apresentaram ainda aderência das leptomeninges. À histopatologia verificou-se encefalite difusa que afetava principalmente a substância cinzenta, com meningite e coroidite. Foi observada perivasculite mononuclear. Em dois equinos identificou-se o vírus da encefalomielite equina Leste pela reação de Semi-Nested transcrição reversa de polimerase em cadeia (Semi-Nested RT-PCR).Nine cases of equine encephalomyelitis on Marajó Island, state of Pará, Brazil, were studied. The affected horses had difficulty to stand, walked in circles, with marked depression, closed eyelids, tongue paralysis, muscle tremors, bruxism, anorexia and dehydration. Some had their ear and eyelid reflexes diminished, decreased tongue tone and tachycardia; laid down frequently they kept their head on the chest. Often they were seen resting their head on tree trunks or fences. At necropsy, hemorrhages of the meninges and spinal cord, and in some animals also adhesion of the meninges were found. Histologically there was diffuse encephalitis affecting mainly the gray matter, with meningitis and choroiditis. Presence of perivascular cuffs consisting of mononuclear inflammatory cells was observed. From two horses the Eastern equine encephalitis virus was identified by semi-nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (semi-nested RT-PCR).

O objetivo do presente trabalho foi pesquisar a prevalência e a etiologia da mastite bovina na bacia leiteira do município de Rondon do Pará, bem como avaliar o perfil de sensibilidade e resistência dos agentes isolados frente aos antimicrobianos. Foram avaliadas 237 vacas mestiças de aptidão leiteira, pertencentes a nove propriedades, as quais utilizavam ordenha manual uma vez ao dia e sistema de criação extensivo em pastagens de Brachiaria brizantha, com fornecimento de sal mineral e água ad libitum. Realizou-se o exame clínico da glândula mamária, o teste da caneca telada e o California Mastitis Test. Dos 935 quartos mamários avaliados, 6,6% apresentaram mastite subclínica, 1,3% mastite clínica e 92,1% foram negativos. As bactérias isoladas na mastite clínica foram Staphylococcus spp. coagulase negativo (25%), Staphylococcus aureus (16,7%), Streptococcus spp. (8,3%) e Corynebacterium spp. (8,3%). Na mastite subclínica foram Staphylococcus spp. coagulase negativo (32,3%), Staphylococcus aureus (17,7%), Staphylococcus intermedius (1,6%), Streptococcus spp. (4,8%), Corynebacterium spp. (4,8%) e Staphylococcus spp. coagulase negativo/S. aureus (1,6%). Não houve crescimento microbiano em 41,7% das amostras com mastite clínica e 37,1% com mastite subclínica. No antibiograma, 100% dos isolados de Staphylococcus spp. coagulase negativo, S. aureus, S. intermedius, e Streptococcus spp. foram sensíveis ao sulfazotrim. Por outro lado Corynebacterium spp. foi 100% resistente ao mesmo antimicrobiano. A cefalotina, cefoxitina e gentamicina, apresentaram eficácia frente às bactérias isoladas do gênero Staphylococcus spp., as quais neste trabalho representam a grande maioria dos agentes causadores de mastite. A mastite foi diagnosticada em todos os rebanhos pesquisados, contudo o número de animais acometidos foi considerado baixo; isso provavelmente deve-se à baixa produção de leite dos animais e a permanência do bezerro ao pé após a ordenha, o que favorece o esvaziamento da glândula mamária. Diante disso, faz-se necessário que medidas higiênico-sanitárias e de manejo sejam adotadas.

O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar o desempenho e as características da carcaça e da carne de novilhos não-castrados alimentados com ou sem adição de monensina (M) e/ou probiótico (P) (Sacharomyces cerevisiae) à dieta. Os animais foram distribuídos em baias individuais, permanecendo 145 dias em confinamento. A dieta foi composta de silagem de milho e 1,2% do peso vivo de concentrado com base da matéria natural. Não houve efeito da adição dos aditivos fornecidos de forma isolada ou mesmo da associação destes sobre o consumo de alimento, o ganho de peso e a conversão alimentar. As médias de consumo, ganho de peso e conversão alimentar apresentaram comportamento quadrático com o avanço do período de confinamento. Embora a adição de M ou P à dieta tenha resultado no aumento numérico (P>0,05) do consumo (4,2%), a média de ganho de peso reduziu (5,8 e 5,3%, respectivamente), resultando em pior conversão alimentar (P>0,05). Já a associação de M+P aumentou (P>0,05) o consumo em 9,5%, com concomitante aumento (P>0,05) do ganho de peso (6,4%) em relação à dieta controle. Os animais alimentados com M+P apresentaram melhor acabamento de carcaça (5,5mm), seguidos por aqueles do grupo controle (4,7mm), sendo os valores inferiores verificados nas carcaças dos animais M (3,7mm) e P (3,5mm). A adição de monensina e/ou probiótico (Sacharomyces cerevisiae) na dieta de novilhos na fase de terminação em confinamento não proporciona melhora no desempenho e nas características da carcaça e da carne de novilhos.The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the performance, carcass and meat characteristics of non-castrated cattle with or without monensin (M) and/or probiotic (P) (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) to the diet. The animals were divided into individual stalls, being left 145 days in feedlot. The roughage used was corn silage + 1.2% of the weight live of concentrate in natural matter basis. There was no effect of the addition of the addictives supplied isolated or associated over feed intake, weight gain and fed conversion. Feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion averages presented quadratic behavior with the increase of the period feedlot. Although the addition of M or P to the diet resulted in the numeric increase (P>.05) of the intake (4.2%) the average of weight gain reduced (5.8 and 5.3%, respectively), resulting in smaller fed conversion (P>.05). The association of M+P already increased (P>.05) the food intake to the order of 9.5% with concomitant increase (P>.05) of the weight gain (6,4%) when compared to diet control. The animals fed with M+P presented better carcass finish (5.5mm), followed by the control (4.7mm), and smaller values, it was verified in the carcasses of the animals that received M (3.7mm) and P (3.5mm). The addition of monensin and/or probiotic for feedlot steers did not improve the performance, carcass and meat quality.

Este artigo busca analisar o Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento (PAC), tendo como base os Planos Econômicos surgidos durante o período em que os militares ocuparam o poder no Brasil (1964-1985). Propõe-se a discutir as ações tomadas pelos cinco governos de farda, principalmente às que deram origem ao Plano de Ação Econômica do Governo (PAEG), ao Plano Estratégico de Desenvolvimento (PED), ao Projeto Brasil Potência (PBP) e aos Planos Nacional de Desenvolvimento (PND´s), bem como a forma como tais políticas foram implementadas e o legado de cada uma delas para a sociedade brasileira, inclusive na concepção do programa de desenvolvimento vigente. O artigo inicia por uma breve revisão do momento político em que os Planos Econômicos foram lançados, seguindo-se uma abordagem de cada um deles e de uma discussão dos seus principais aspectos positivos e negativos, assim como das suas principais contribuições para o atual cenário econômico do país.

From its very beginning down to Hellenistic and Imperial times, the character of Aesop, the eponymous author of fables, is constructed among others by means of some differential features shared with a different cultural agent, the Philosopher. This development is supported by the rhetorical and literary exploitation of the Aesopic genre, conceived as a kind of alternative and often polemical discourse. This image becomes final in the fictitious late biography known as the Vita Aesopi, which represents Aesop as an apparent “anti-philosopher” who indeed strives to assert some authentically philosophical values.
